i just read Against Exercise. i wanted to ask what you make of this sentence and the wider paradigm he gestures at occasionally in the essay:
Upon the desperate materialist gratifications of a hedonic society, commanding immediate comfort and happiness, we engraft the desperate economics of health, and chase a longer span of happinesses deferred, and comforts delayed, by disposing of the better portion of our lives in life preservation.
do we live in a ‘hedonic’ society? and does that framing shape his conclusions on in ur opinion? i have my own thoughts but am interested in yours x
ok i'm glad you asked because i find this sentence and this paradigm very irritating lol. i don't think he's the only left-ish thinker who's acceded to this type of framing (like i've complained about mark fisher pulling a similar move) but with greif there's a particular irksomeness to it because, even in the sentence you've quoted, we can see in the latter half how he contradicts his own idea of a "hedonic society"! if his thesis here is something like "the dominant cultural paradigm encourages instant gratification and hedonism, and the exerciser defies this edict by deferring their happiness and sweating it out at the gym instead" then, like, the obvious question here is, where does the impulse of the exerciser come from? does greif actually think the pursuit of fitness and longevity by physical exertion is some kind of counter-cultural move that reacts against, without acceding to, the demands of a "hedonic society"? if he does then it kind of undercuts the significance of the entire rest of the essay, lmao.
my personal answer here would be—and this is something greif dances around a few times but doesn't ever seem prepared to fully unpack—that the demand to have a fit and 'healthy' and long-lasting body is not at all contradictory to the demand to consume goods, and that this latter is more precisely what is meant by "hedonism" here if we are to use it in any useful sense. i think what greif is actually pointing to is the demand to shape oneself into, simultaneously, a valuable worker and an obedient consumer. in an immediate sense these two goals demand different things (say, 'going for a run' vs 'buying products') but on a more thorough analysis we can easily see how they arise from the same fundamental logic of profit-seeking. body fascism has never been just an aesthetic; what it promises to the state and the corporation is a population that is biologically managed and economically exploitable. i think this is true even in an imperialist economy like the united states that doesn't run primarily on production/export.
i don't know a ton about mark greif biographically but my impression is that he's kind of half-left at best, lol. certainly he's like, curmudgeonly in a way that is sometimes useful to mine (ruthless criticism of all that exists, &c) but i think in this essay and others we can clearly see how easily that attitude can slide into just a vaguely reactionary position when it lacks materialist analysis. like, frankly i think if we lived in a social context that actually had a commitment to ensuring hedonic pleasure that would probably be a better world. it's kind of similar to when lib-left types try to claim that we live in a world that has any serious degree of commitment to "the individual" when what they actually, usually mean is that we've been massified in a way that denies us social connection and material support from one another.
anyway: 'against exercise' was very mind-blowing to me when i first read it and i love to see someone staking out that position seriously; and there are elements of greif's analysis i think can be useful in an actually communist analysis. but i find a lot of cultural criticism (specifically that positions itself as counter-cultural without being explicitly communist) has a risk of just sliding reactionary, and i think this half-baked idea of a "hedonic society" is an example of that happening. curious what you think though!

Patriarchy made biology a negative spectacle, a filth that had to be hidden. The ethos of exercise makes it a positive spectacle, a competitive fascination that must be revealed. The rhetoric of “loving the body” can thus be misused. With the extension of the cliché that one should “not be ashamed” of the body, people are less able to defend themselves against the prospect that their actual bodies, and biological processes, may be manifest at every moment, in new states of disciplining neither public nor private. It becomes a retrogression, a moral failing in these people, to wish to defend against exposure, or to withdraw their health, bodies, arousal, and self-regulation from the social scene, as if privacy of this kind were mere prudery or repression.

The other record I remember from when I was fourteen that scared and alienated me in the same way as the Minor Threat album was Public Enemy’s It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back. I wasn’t black, Public Enemy didn’t want me, and the music had the same dual effect of righteous thrills and a sense of complete non-belonging. (That album, too, reminded you that white people ought to be hated.) Even today I wish there were more records, everywhere, that obstruct the identification process of rock, that teach more listeners not to identify. You don’t deserve it sometimes, and maybe singers should forbid it. This was a valuable piece of education for me. Not all feelings produced by art belong to you—even if in some measure only your own response brings them into being. Sometimes art-emotions have to be sequestered, moved into a different category of response, to free you to be a responsible human being: someone, that is, who knows to stand at a remove and appreciate others, while acknowledging that they don’t want you, they don’t care if you’re there.

I’m in a reading slump. Can you please suggest some light reading to push me out of it? :)
here you go.
also a few more additions since then —
beartown trilogy by fredrik backman: it’s about a town devoted to ice hockey, and a really really really well-done story of where it takes the community
against everything by mark greif: essays on a whole bunch of things including the commodification of food, exercise and sex among other things; really quite thoughtfully done. the book sort of lingers in the background: i started it sometime last year and i pick it up when i feel like it after weeks and months
the dangers of smoking in bed by mariana enriquez: a little heavier than what you'd normally seek out in light reading, but it's good nonetheless. a collection of gothic horror, all set in buenos aires, all revolving around women; i found the book very darkly fascinating
ghachar ghochar by vivek shanbag: about a family that becomes rich very suddenly, and what that does to the family fabric, their sense of self and morality; it's a quick read

So my very favorite fic of yours is the entire Ever Fixed Mark universe. I know that’s not one in particular, but each one speaks to a different aspect of Greif and Love and Life that I can’t help but reread them over and over again.
I have a special fondness for Dalliance because as the daughter of a veteran I watched many people cope with war the way you had Wellington do it-that stoic adherence to normality. Others as Elizabeth did with her clinging to military circles as much as she can. I also just loved the dynamic of Elizabeth learning to love without societal expectations and pressure.
Also loving that LGBTQIA+ in Dalliance where I feel like you were able to really explore that part of your world. My little queer heart just swells every time I read it.
TL/DR: love EFM, especially Dalliance with the Duke. You are easily one of my favorite fanfic authors.
Gosh, thank you!! A bit of background that is probably useful for understanding that whole universe and look into war is that my mom was an army nurse her whole career. It’s left me with a sort of lingering fascination with the psychology of war and what it does to people and how people conceived of it and talked about it in the past.

do tell about your ocs if you wanna, love your art 💜
HEHEHEHE okay okay okay I need to work on my official shpiel about them but here’s super basic stuff abt the characters that are the most fleshed out-
Tumblr media
These two are Uziel(left) and Evgeni(right) and they’re my historical supernatural shtetl ocs,,,
Evgeni is half human half golem, said golem was made by his father out of greif, thus they took the appearance of his late wife (and thus them having a baby lol) and uziel is the cantor/rabbi patriarchs grandson who is evgeni’s slowburn best friend to lover (uziel is super naive abt their relationship, and thinks “love wins” and he can have a wife & kids and still have evgeni and evgeni is like. Yeah no this is sort of doomed lol) BUT YEAH they’re my faves for sure,, I also have evgenis parents rly fleshed out as well as the rabbi of their village but I need a real writer to help me lol idk how to resolve a conflict or move scenes along, I tend to linger on details forever 😭 one day my adhd dyslexic ass will generate a piece of consumable media !! But until then,,, I doodle them as treats
I’ve never had people excited about my characters, so I will definitely be drawing them more !!! Mark my words

Totk Resurrection AU pt.2
Rauru and Sonia cling to eachother for what feels like an eternity, holding eachother tightly yet carefully, making sounds of joy, greif and confusion.
Sonia raises her head to kiss Rauru on the lips, yet instead she gently bonks her snout right into Rauru's chin, causing him to gently chuckle.
"This is perhaps the clumsiest I've ever seen of you." He teases, gently kissing her on the bridge of her nose.
"Perhaps~" Sonia teases in response, scratching at the base of Rauru's ears, coaxing a flustered purr out of him.
The pair begin to giggle and sigh, before gently losing their hold of eachother.
"Although it may be wiser to find a way out of this dreary place" Sonia said calmly, her ears gently twitching, Rauru fought every instinct telling him to say 'cute' as he scratched his chin.
"It is probably a cute-, I mean good, idea to try and find an exit" Rauru internally facepalms at his verbal slip up before continuing, "I did see what might've been a door down the hallway I came from" He remarked.
Sonia's ears lifted slightly, softly chuckling "Well let's go see if we can open that door you found"
Rauru and Sonia both walk down the empty halls of the strange ruin as they both look around for the door Rauru mentioned, holding eachothers hands firmly, daring not to let go lest they lose eachother once more.
After half an hour of wandering...
"Sonia! I think I see it!" Rauru exclaims, pointing down a corridor, Sonia's ears perk as she peers down to see a solid stone slab door.
The pair turn and walk down the corridor, approaching the stone door.
"I tried finding a way to open it myself earlier, but there was no terminal, no lever, crank or wheel to find." Rauru explains as Sonia approaches the door.
Sonia reaches a hand out, concentrating on her power, begining to read the stone door's history, searching for a moment when it was open and 'Fwoom, clup clo click!'
Sonia's golden magics envelope the door as it lifts itself open, revealing a shrine rock sitting in the middle of an empty room.
"Opened it!" Sonia remarks, flashing a soft yet cheeky smile to Rauru, as the pair walk thrlugh the opened door and into the room and towards the shrine, where the soft green glow of the terminal projection flashes into existance as the pair reach the gravel floor marking the shrine's entrance.
"This is a shrine entrance... in here..?" Rauru ponders, his ears perking upwards as he thinks. Looking around the room Rauru notices something, the architecture in this room, not only is it intact, but is familiar even.
"Wait Sonia, I think that this is inside a shrine, although I don't ever remember us conjuring such a facility in the shrine realms when planning them out.." He scratches his chin in confusion.
"We did plan over one hundred and fifty of these over the years, but I do agree that a place like this place is not something I think either of us would have made." Sonia nods, resting her chin on her hand in contemplation.
"Let's figure that out later, for now we should get out of this place." Rauru says, raising an arm to the terminal, causing it to make gentle blips and softly explode into ribbons of light as green fire forms an opening in the tall boulder, and for the first time in eons, Rauru and Sonia see sunlight with their own eyes and step through the green gateway and back into the nation they founded together, long ago.

might be a long shot but i think i remember u mentioning the article "against exercise" by mark greif & was wondering if u might have a link 2 an un-paywalled version or a pdf you'd be willing 2 share? the n+1 mag has a paywall that 12ft ladder can't get rid of...not sure if it's published elsewhere 4 free but i'm struggling 2 find it so thought it couldn't hurt 2 ask!
yes verso books has it posted for free :-)
The gym resembles a voluntary hospital. Its staff members are also its patients. Some machines put you in a traction you can escape. Others undo the imprisonment of a respirator, cuing you to pump your lungs yourself, and tracking your heart rate on a display. Aided even by a love that can develop for your pains, this self-testing becomes second nature. The curious compilation of numbers that you are becomes an aspect of your freedom, sometimes the most important, even more preoccupying than your thoughts or dreams. You discover what high numbers you can become, and how immortal. For you, high roller, will live forever. You are eternally maintained. The justification for the total scope of the responsibility to exercise is health. A further extension of the counting habit of exercise gives a precise economic character to health. It determines the anticipated numbers for the days and hours of one’s life. Today we really can preserve ourselves for a much longer time. The means of preservation are reliable and cheap. The haste to live one’s mortal life diminishes. The temptation toward perpetual preservation grows. We preserve the living corpse in an optimal state, not so we may do something with it, but for its own good feelings of eternal fitness, confidence, and safety. We hoard our capital to earn interest, and subsist each day on crusts of bread. But no one will inherit our good health after we’ve gone. The hours of life maintenance vanish with the person. The person who does not exercise, in our current conception, is a slow suicide. He fails to take responsibility for his life. He doesn’t labor strenuously to forestall his death. Therefore we begin to think he causes it. It may be a comfort to remember when one of your parents’ acquaintances dies that he did not eat well or failed to take up running. The nonexerciser is lumped with other unfortunates whom we socially dis- count. Their lives are worth a percentage of our own, through their own neglect. Their value is compromised by the failure to ensure the fullest term of possible physical existence. The nonexerciser joins all the unfit: the slow, the elderly, the hopeless, and the poor. “Don’t you want to ‘live’?” we say. No answer of theirs could satisfy us.
