New #review #TheGuernseyLiteraryandPotatoPeelPieSociety (Random House Reader's Circle Deluxe Reading Group Edition): A Novel by #MaryAnnShaffer and #AnnieBarrows The Random House Reader’s Circle edition has an additional 80 pages of annotations which makes it really interesting (and has opened my eyes to some of the more hidden atrocities that took place - like all the famous/popular companies that used slave labor during WWII). There’s some very cool info from the authors at the end that provides you with a bit more insight into their own lives. It also includes book club discussion questions, which is perfect since this is the book my book club chose! The book is written in the form of letters and telegrams to and from Juliet Ashton, her publisher/friend, her best friend from school, a potential love interest, and the Guernsey islanders, as she moves away from her position as a highly popular, humorous wartime columnist to branch out into writing a more serious book on something she’s passionate about, although she’s not quite sure what that is yet. At least, not until a chance letter from Dawsey Adams sparks that passion within her and she’s drawn into Guernsey island life after the German Occupation and the events that unfolded during said Occupation between a group of friends and near-strangers who ultimately grow into the family that none of them knew they needed or wanted. I was surprised by just how different the movie was from the book, since the movie is what inspired me to pick up the book. The movie takes a lot of liberty with events in the book that really didn’t need it other than to create more cinematic drama, imo. I finished listening to The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and then watched the movie and as usual I’m so disappointed in the movie version, but for different reasons than they left out too much. I was disappointed because the book was about resilience and healing. The Society wanted to share their experiences as part of their healing process. Juliet’s character was desperately searching for her real voice, her real thoughts, and her real feelings after having to be the person who kept up moral during the war through her column. They left out these key pieces of the story and it changed the feel of it all. The characters did things, but the drive behind it was missing. Written entirely in letters, cables and telegrams this book had a huge cast of characters but each had an entirely unique voice, I couldn’t put this book down. The connections between the characters was absolutely incredible. Whether they already existed, or whether we got to watch them grow throughout the book, there characters were fantastically realistic and very human. Another thing I loved was how there were two main, central characters but we only heard from one of them. The other, we heard about from stories regarding her, and yet, she was such a powerful and fierce character, and I grew to love her as much as any of them. The Gurnsey Literary and Potato Peel Society by Mary Ann Shaffer ⭐️⭐️⭐️ I really didn’t know what to expect with this book, and if it wasn’t talked about so much I probably wouldn’t have read it. Told in letters to multiple people this is a story of how one small island survived during Nazi occupation. It’s one full of laughs and heartaches. At times I did find myself getting several of the characters confused because they all pretty much talked the same which was surprising for me. I was expecting some different slang to help distinguish who was who. It also became clear rather early on to me that romance between two people was going to happen.
