Nampō Roku, Book 7 (68):  Serving Shōro [松露] During the Meal.
Tumblr media
68) During the meal service, shōro [松露] were [sometimes] brought out¹.  This was a famous item [harvested] from the pine-barrens [around Hakata]².  [Ri]kyū was taught how to prepare them by an old man from the area -- because, among the various kinds of plants, there are some that are poisonous [so one must always be careful in this regard, especially when visiting an unfamiliar area]; [however, the old man told Rikyū that] shōro contain nothing poisonous³.
Regardless of whether they are large or small, they are [first] lightly scored with a blade; and after being boiled [in broth], they should be eaten⁴.
Because they can spoil easily, cases where [the shōro] have been infiltrated by rot must be identified, so it is said⁵.  That [spoiling] is certainly a possibility⁶.
As for this old man, he was well known as the first chef of the port of Hakata; and this person was called Kamichi Tōgo.  He also practiced tea -- such was [Ri]kyū’s story⁷.
_________________________
¹Ryōri ni shōro wo dasu [料理ニ松露ヲ出ス].
Shōro [松露] is the Japanese name for the ectomycorrhizal fungus (a fungus that forms a symbiotic relationship with the roots of certain species of trees -- in this case Pinus thunbergii, the Japanese black pine, which populates the seaside pine-barrens of Kyūshū*) Rhizopogon roseolus, generally classified as a sort of truffle.  The truffle is the fruiting-body of the fungus.
Tumblr media
Immature shōro (which are considered more desirable) are pure white inside, while the mature truffles range from pink to reddish-brown to a pale violet-pink.  This variety of truffle can be up to 1-sun in diameter.
When used as food, the truffles are washed with diluted salt water†, scored with a blade or sliced, and then either boiled in broth (as one ingredient in the nimono [煮物] course), grilled with salt (served as the yaki-mono [燒き物] course), or added to chawan-mushi [茶碗蒸し] (as the mushi-mono [蒸し物], served near the end of the meal‡). __________ *In the uplands, Rhizopogon roseolus is also associated with Pinus densiflora, the Japanese red pine.
†Apparently to disinfect the shōro, since they grew underground (and so would be considered inherently unclean).
Saltwater, the reader will recall, was also used to disinfect the floor of the setchin.
Apparently actual seawater was preferred for such purposes -- though it could be fabricated artificially by dissolving a quantity of sea salt in warm water, in places where natural seawater was not available locally.
‡In the more elaborate version of kaiseki-ryōri that became popular during the Edo period (and remains the usual way to serve this meal today).
²Ka no matsu-bara no meibutsu nari [カノ松原ノ名物也].
Ka no matsu-bara [かの松原], “those pine-barrens,” is referring to  the pine-barrens in the area of Hakata.
Ka no matsu-bara meibutsu nari [かの松原の名物なり] means (the shōro) are a specialty of the pine-barrens of that area.
³Tokoro no rōjin, Kyū ni oshie-mōshikeru ha, subete kusabera-no-rui doku ari, shōro doku-nashi [所ノ老人、休ニ教ヘ申ケルハ、スベテクサベラノ類毒アリ、松露毒ナシ].
Tokoro no rojin [所の老人] means an old man of the area.  He was a native of Hakata.
Kyū ni oshie-mōshikeru [休に教え申しける] means he taught Rikyū (about the shōro).
Subete kusabera-no-rui doku ari [すべて草片の類毒あり]:  subete [すべて] means among every kind (of vegetables), within the entire category (of vegetables); kusabera-no-rui [草片の類]* means the category of vegetables that exist (referring to the seeds, roots, stems, leaves, bulbs or tubers, flowers, or fruits that could be used as vegetables); doku ari [毒あり] means poisonous (varieties) exist.
Shōro doku-nashi [松露毒なし] means shōro have no poisons; shōro are nontoxic. ___________ *Again the kanji rui [類], which we find only in this group of entries dating from near the end of the seventeenth century.
⁴Sare-domo dai-shō tomo ni, sukoshi-zutsu katana-me wo irete, nite tabe-subeshi [サレドモ大小トモニ、少ツヽ刀目ヲ入レテ、煮テ食スベシ].
Sare-domo [然れども] means though (something) may be so, be things as they may -- in this case regardless of whether the shōro are large or small....
Sukoshi-zutsu katana-me wo irete [少ずつ刀目を入れて] means the shōro are scored lightly with the blade of a knife.
Nite [煮て] means after they have been boiled (in broth).
Tabe-subeshi [食すべし] means they should be eaten.
⁵Shizen ni doku ni ataru ha, doku-ke komorite no koto nari to iu-iu [自然ニ毒ニアタルハ、毒氣コモリテノコト也ト云〻].
Because of the repeated use of doku [毒], which literally means poison, this sentence seems to contradict what we were told in footnote 3.  Here, however, doku is referring to the shōro having spoiled, having become rotten internally.
Shizen ni doku ni ataru [自然に毒に當たるは] literally means (if the shōro) have naturally been stricken with toxicity.  Tanaka Senshō explains that this sentence means the shōro have gone bad*.
Doku-ke komorite no koto [毒氣籠りてのこと] means that they have been infiltrated by poisons (in other words, started to deteriorate from within). __________ *In his commentary, he wrote:
This means, “once, when I actually going to use these shōro for chanoyu, even though I thought they were fresh, when I broke one open and inspected it, the inside was rotten.  They seem to spoil relatively quickly.  For this reason they seem to be at least a little dangerous.  Naturally, if a kitchen knife is pushed in, it will be safe [since doing so will reveal if it is spoiled on the inside].  The phrase doku-ke komorite [毒氣籠りて] refers to this situation where they have begun to spoil, doesn’t it?”
In the last sentence, Tanaka cannot help but his doubts -- occasioned by the conflict between this sentence and what we were told in footnote 3.
⁶Sa mo aru-beshi [サモアルベシ].
Sa mo aru-beshi [さもあるべし] means “that (the shōro’s spoiling) is something that is certainly possible” -- so they should be checked carefully.
⁷Kono rōjin ha, Hakata-no-tsu dai-ichi no hōchō-nin, Kamichi Tōgo to iu-bito ni te, cha wo mo tatetari to Kyū no monogatari nari [コノ老人ハ、博多ノ津第一ノ庖丁人、神治藤五ト云人ニテ、茶ヲモ立タリト休ノ物語也].
Kono rōjin [この老人は] means the old man who taught Rikyu about shōro.
Hakata no tsu [博多の津] means in the area of Hakata port.  The focus of the city-state was its harbor, and the main thoroughfare and ceremonial route ran from the great Enkaku-ji* directly across the whole enclave to the seawall and wharves.
Dai-ichi no hōchō-nin [第一の庖丁人] means he was the first, or most esteemed, professional chef (in Hakata).
Kamichi Tōgo to iu hito [神治藤五と云う人] means this person was known as Kamichi Tōgo†.
Cha wo mo tatetari [茶をも立てたり] means Kamichi Tōgo also practiced chanoyu.
To Kyū no monogatari nari [と休の物語なり] means this‡ was Rikyū’s story. __________ *According to Kanshū oshō-sama, the original Enkaku-ji stood on the site currently occupied by the Hakata train station.  The temple was burned down by the Imperial Army in the 1930s, apparently in retaliation for the refusal of the Abbot to hand over the original copy of the Nampō Roku.  (The Shū-un-an, at the Nanshū-ji in Sakai, was looted and burned down, again by the Imperial Army -- according to the highly placed monks I spoke with there -- around the same time.)
The current Enkaku-ji was rebuilt during the 1950s, on ground obtained from the neighboring Shōfuku-ji (originally the parcel of land was a graveyard for non-tonsured individuals affiliated with the temple; it was located outside the temple walls).
†Shibayama Fugen’s toku-shu shahon gives his name as Kaminoya Jitōgo [神野治藤五].
Tanaka, meanwhile, completely discredits Kamichi (as the name is written in the Enkaku-ji text), concluding that the family name should be pronounced either Kamiya or Kaminoya.  However, he also adds that, as a personal name, Jitōgo [治藤五] sounds very strange -- though he does not really offer us any alternatives.
‡Probably referring to the entire episode that is discussed in this entry; though, grammatically, it could simply refer to the statement that Kamichi Tōgo (or Kaminoya Jitōgo) practiced chanoyu.

Lyrics:
集え壊せ 我が為に
tsudoe kowase waga tame ni
Gather and destroy, it's my purpose.
静粛なる夜の闇に 白の少女 虚空へ詠う 開け扉 魔の使者共 我の血と旋律に集え 穢れた剣 驕る貴族 命を売り笑う商人 弱き者は身を潜めて 声を殺し 心を殺す
seishukunaru yoru no yami ni shiro no shōjo kokū e utau ake tobira ma no shisha-domo ga no chi to senritsu ni tsudoe kegareta ken ogoru kizoku inochi o uri warau shōnin yowaki-sha wa mi o hisomete koe o koroshi kokoro o korosu
As the night becomes silent, a girl in white, chants to the open sky. Through the open door, demon messengers, gather around my blood and melody. With an unclean blade, an arrogant noble, sells her life like a laughing merchant. The weak hide themselves, kill their voices, kill their hearts.
現れよ 猛き狡猾な獣 贅となる魂 捧げる私を さぁ、喰らいつくせ
araware yo takeki kōkatsuna kemono zei to naru tamashī sasageru watashi o sa~a, kurai tsukuse
It appears! The fierce and cunning beast. I offer to you, my luxurious soul. Come, devour it.
此の世界に光など要らない 願いは虚しく消えて逝く 憎しみこそが力と成る 世界を変えていくの め 腑を 目を 手を! 恐れない 戯れの誓いでも良い 身も意も添え 真の呪をご覧入れよう

There’s no need for things like light in this world where hopes are extinguished in vain. My hatred becomes power, and it will change the world. Seize my reason, my eyes, my hands! I won’t be afraid, even if its a playful oath. With my heart and soul, I’ll take a look at the true curse.
厳粛なる夜の闇に 黒い羽の使徒は降り立つ
genshukunaru yoru no yami ni kuroi hane no shito wa oritatsu
In the somber darkness of the night, a black-winged herald descends.
【お前ごときの虫ケラが 小賢しくも力を獲るか 闇を乞う者よ 何故にそのしゃは 人想い 善を抱き 「悪」として囀るか 今、問う
[omaegotoki no mushi kera ga kozakashiku mo chikara o eru ka yami o kou mono yo naze ni sono sha wa hito omoi zen o daki `aku' to shite saezuru ka ima, tou
[An insect like you is clever enough to gain power? You who beg for darkness, Why do you hold on to your humanity and call it "evil"? I ask now.

When this world is bathed in light, fools blinded by the glare, Hide themselves further in the shadows, sharpen their claws and bide their time. Leave it. Go to sleep. When you awake tomorrow, nothing will have changed, But the pain, that you feel, ah, I'll replace it with power!]
(The line here is repeated, but its not written down, and I can't understand it.)
わかってる 私一人の犠牲では何の価値も無いの
wakatteru watashihitori no giseide wa nani no kachi mo nai no
I know, my sacrifice alone is worthless.
百の羊を積み重ねて 千の楔を身に受けましょう 悲しい顔をした魔を連れ 染まれ紅の華
hyaku no hitsuji o tsumikasanete sen no kusabi o mi ni ukemashou kanashī kao o shita ma o tsure somare beninohana
Stack a hundred sheep and you will receive a thousand cuts. Flowers stained red, with the sad face of a demon.
潰せ 腑を 目を 手を! 側にいて 戯れの誓いでも良い 身も意も添え 真の呪を貴方に捧ぐ
tsubuse fu o me o te o! soba ni ite tawamure no chikai demo ii mi mo i mo soe shin no noroi o anata ni sasagu
Destroy my reason, my eyes, my hands! Stay by my side, even if its a playful oath. With my heart and soul, I dedicate the true curse to you.
Notes:
This song is about a girl turning to the dark side. She sells her life to a demon to turn her pain into power. The music is really powerful without being too chaotic (like some of Drop's tracks) and is easily my favorite song on the album!
百の羊を積み重ねて 千の楔を身に受けましょう
I do not understand this line at all. I feel like its probably a proverb or a play of words but I couldn't find anything that sounded similar. 楔 means wedge, so I translated 千の楔を身に "A thousand wedges on the body" as "a thousand cuts," but I doubt that's what she meant.
♠️Please consider buying this album to support Yura Hatsuki on her booth!♥️

A young boy stands in front of the stall of a mushi-uri (Insect peddler) which has various species of 'musical insects' on display. The pictograms on the signs on the left are combined with the character 'mushi' (insect). The vendor is selling four different types of crickets, each one making a distinct chirping sound from one another. There is the matsu-mushi (pine cricket), suzu-mushi (bell-ring cricket) and kutsuwa-mushi (bridle-bit cricket). I'm unsure what type of insect the fourth type stands for - If someone here knows, please let us all know.
In the Heian period (794 to 1185) Japanese aristocrats and samurai regarded these 'musical insects' as prized commodities and they were often presented as gifts to the Imperial palace. Eventually the 'crying insect culture' became so popular in Japan that numerous businesses were formed, creating an entire industry around selling these insects. Insect-breeding practices became more advanced, with different techniques developed to warm its eggs during the overwintering period, which were then sold at higher prices. The insect vendor's stalls are usually decorated in an eye-catching checkered pattern (which I'll also post in the comments below). Even different qualities of insect cages were sold, varying from basic bamboo crafted containers to more extravagant lacquered cages.
Japan's singing insect-selling culture continued to flourish during the Meiji period and the selection of species being sold had increased up to 12 different varieties (including two silent ones - the vibrant, shiny, metallic-coloured 'tanamushi 玉虫' jewelled beetle and the light-emitting 'hotaru 蛍' firefly). However, the devastating results of World War II crippled the insect-selling industry and the wholesalers vanished completely. Despite the nation facing grim situations, where food, clothing and shelter were all in dire need, the people still turned their hearts towards these comforting insects again after the end of the war, for some level of solace and healing. They were slowly being collected again and sold in shopping districts in Ginza.
According to Dutch Journalist, Kjeld Duits (OldPhotosJapan), the cicadas (semi) were also very popular to collect as well. Each species played a different ‘tune’ during different times of the day or month when they appeared, so filmmakers would incorporate subtle sounds from those species into their films for their audiences, in an attempt to reflect scenes taking place during those times. Who knew these 'insect musicians' would be used in such sophisticated works of art?
Over time, there was a gradual shift from collecting chirping crickets and cicadas in favour of beetles by Japanese children, which they would keep as pets and sometimes train them for organised battles with their friends.
During the post-World War II era, the country went through a period of rapid growth known as 'Japan's economic miracle' which pivoted the nation to become the world's second largest economy, after the United States. As the Japan's standard of living rose, their lifestyle equally became more sophisticated. People became more fascinated with cars, white goods and other electronic items. One other theory was that children became more interested in indoor forms of entertainment such as video games - finally signalling the decline of the popularity of the insect-collecting culture in Japan.
Interestingly, decades later a man named Satoshi Tajiri would create a Nintendo video game in 1990, which was based on the concept from his childhood love of bug-catching and battling in the countryside. He named it ‘Pokemon’ (short for ‘Pocket Monsters’) and the franchise would later have an impact on the entertainment industry not only in Japan, but around the world. The brand’s slogan is ‘Gotta Catch ‘Em All’.
Note: Japan's chirping insect-collecting culture different from the one in China in many subtle ways (from the containers the insects were stored in, their diets, how the insects were used etc). There's too much information for one post, so I may create another one in the future.
What are your thoughts about hearing the sound of crickets and cicadas during those days?
This was a long story, but I hope it was insightful to you all.

YOU SHINE LIKE THE STARS, YOU LIGHT UP MY HEART // Touta Matsuda x Reader
word count : 2585 genre : fluff <33 (stargazing with this pretty boy!!)
Tumblr media
It was a sight to behold—the empty of clouds but shrouded with twinkling stars with the right distance from one another. They were visible in every direction. What a perfect night to stargaze. You had just gotten out the yard of your family's house, accompanied by a cup of hot milk and cookies. Unfortunately you forgot to bring your eyeglasses so you had to head back inside—a surprise welcoming you when you saw someone who didn't belong in your house.
"Touta? What are you doing here?"
That was a little... impertinent. You felt guilty. It wasn't like you weren't happy to see him, you were just shocked. Plain shocked.
"Hey [Y/N]! Haha, good evening!"
He was a bit skittish, maybe nervous. You noticed how clammy his forehead was, with the reason being just finished looking at you through the loophole in the kitchen wall. "It's been a while. You look.. dazzling.. as always."
"If your definition of dazzling is someone who looks like a zombie who's just gotten out of bed, thank you." You smirked, wearing your glasses. "What made you come here anyway? Isn't it late? It's your day-off today?"
"Yup. Thought of visiting a.. friend. You see, I—I really missed you! Work hasn't been the same since you le—"
"Hm, I know that tone. Come on Matsu."
"Hey! It's not that I'm complaining! I still like my job, it's good. But it could be better if you're with us, despite your never-ending bad mood. Hehe..."
"Ooh, so you missed me, that's why you're here. You wanna catch up."
"Of course?" He sheepishly rubbed his nape. You smiled slyly and hummed, trotting back to the yard.
"Come. You're obliged to."
Matsuda followed, hesitant to sit beside you on the grass, only until you pat the space beside you. He kept on constantly shifting his legs as you munched on your cookies, offering him some. You two ate in silence, looking at nothing in particular as the night breeze hit you. The wind's eerily ethereal howl rung in your ears, blending with the faint sound of the television from inside.
He pursed his lips and looked at you, blushing while waiting for the right time to speak. You thought the same thing even without looking at him. After some time, you spoke, immediately cutting yourself off as he did the same. Of course, that's bound to happen.
"You go first."
"You're my visitor. I know you wanna ask me some things."
He fidgeted the hem of his shirt. "How.. How have you been?" You snorted, shaking your head fondly. "I'm fine, I guess. Nothing interesting though, really. No thrill in my new work plus my bitchy subordinates. I swear, Matsu, if I get full, they'll know I'm the worst of their kind."
"Show them who's boss [Y/N]! You do look scary and mean after all.. I mean—"
"Hey! I'm not as mean as I look like! I only am to Satan's spawns."
"I-I was kidding—"
"Chillax, of course."
"But at least you are actually kind and can cope with me."
"And your stupidity." You jested. He flushed pink and frantically shook his head.
"What's your new work anyway? Am I the only one among your peers who doesn't it yet?"
"Nah, they've no idea too. I'm currently working as a hotelier. But I think I'm... Is old-work-sick even a thing? Something like that."
"What hotel?"
"Not too far from the station. You just gotta grab a taxi and voila—you're there. Hm, why ask? Thought of visiting me frequently? Eh? Eh?"
"N-No! I mean.. why not? Just thought of.. visiting you during my free time, just to, you know, chatter with you. Because—because you boost my mood.. in some sort of way."
You felt your heart melt. "Aww, I'm happy. You do the same to me. And you know? I've thought of visiting you in the station as well."
"Really? You should! I—I mean.. only if you're free of course. I've been feeling out of place lately. They're still nice but I don't know. Maybe it's just me..."
"They're preoccupied with work, that's why they barely interact with you. Focus on your work, it'll make you less lonely." You said, plaintive.
"But I am focusing.."
"No, hocus focus! Not focus focus. You know what I mean?"
"That's vague, but okay?"
"And yeah, if I visit you, it won't be very frequent. I'm sorry Matsu, even if I want to. I don't want to get scolded by the inspector or the chief. I don't wanna get you in more trouble too. Even though I'd often, er, miss you, too."
The words came out, unbidden, and you mentally smacked your forehead. His eyes softened as you stared at him. He smiled, and you could tell that he was still restraining himself because even his eyes were smiling, his ears turning red. You found his smile cute and rather infectious. You cleared your throat. He averted his gaze elsewhere, mumbling.
"Why did you have to quit.. I wish you had stayed."
You sighed then pursed your lips. "Me too. But my parents don't like it anymore. Well to begin with, they never liked the idea of their only daughter being involved in a perilous job. But the arson was what really ended it all."
Matsuda looked crestfallen after you'd mentioned it. He clenched his fists. He could still remember that day vividly—the day you almost died. He remembered how he struggled to not look at the criminal because he was afraid he might start thinking of doing unjust things to the person who almost killed you. He sighed.
"I should've stayed with you. That would've never happened."
"No no, chin up Matsuu! The fire didn't even fully touch me 'cause even it was intimidated of how hot I am compared to it." You chuckled, casting him a wistful glance. "I was reckless. My bad. And that recklessness led to that. So take it from me. Think thoroughly before you act. I wouldn't want the same thing happening to you, you reckless bean."
"Noted Madame!" He laughed.
You smiled and looked up the sky, tapping his shoulder moments later.
"Yes, [Y/N]?"
"You stargaze often?"
"Not really. I can't remember the last time I did. Do you like stargazing?"
"Needless to say. I often do it. You should, too." You nudged his shoulder with yours, your proximity making you blush. You both threw your heads back and stared at the stars in silence. You began making random patterns. Matsuda giggled as he found one that looked like the initial of your name.. or as he had tried to convince himself.
"This peacefulness, it's my dolce vita! Nothing but the question of how many stars we could count. I can do this for hooours."
"Your neck will turn numb.. Mine's already feeling a little.. eh."
"There's no need to worry when we can just lie down."
You could see the redness of his cheeks after hearing that. You could almost giggle.
The two of you lay down on the grass, him spacing out a little. His shoulders were tense, his heart banging his sternum that he was afraid you'd hear just how loud it was. But eventually he relaxed when he saw you not minding the proximity at all.
Matsuda looked up, his smile growing larger and larger the more stars his eyes caught. But he had completely forgotten the counting-star-thing you said.
The night was silently still. Television from the inside had been turned off so the only noise you heard even from the distance was the sound of nature. You controlled your breath, afraid that it might disrupt the stillness. You began to grow lethargic from all the star counting. Alas, you gave up and stopped at number 42.
You looked to the side to see what progress had he made. None at all. He was not only staring at you—he was smiling! Looking at you like you are his world!
Once he realized you were also staring at him his face turned beet red. He wanted to look away, but how? There were you, exchanging stares of adoration. Hah. All that was needed was a label.
You had the strongest urge to lean in and kiss him. Kiss him? Oh [Y/N], control your thoughts! Sigh. If nothing would miraculously interrupt the stare session, you'd really kiss him.
Nothing. Nothing. The universe was in favor of you. And you know the drill.
You took the opportunity to face him and lift yourself up from the grass. Your stare could've frozen him on his position. He was going to explode in mushiness. It's almost like the wind was all it would take for your lips to press.
You rested your elbow on the grass and gently caressed his hair. You cupped his cheek with your other hand, your thumb circling it. You closed your eyes, praying you wouldn't fail this one. You did it slowly on purpose, but seemed like Matsuda opposed that. He inclined and cupped your face, kissing you.
But only for a mere second.
Your torso clumsily fell flat partially on him and the ground because of your initial awkward position. And you didn't even feel the kiss because of your forgotten eyeglasses.
"Aha...haha... Uhm—[Y/N]—you okay?? I'm—"
You sat up and boldly chuckled in spite of looking like a four-eyed tomato.
"That went veeeeery well."
"So.. ah.. the thing earlier.. moments ago—" It's as if he was trying to convince himself that it really happened. And he couldn't contain his infectious smile and laughter anymore that you were sure reached the entire neighborhood.
"What waaas that!"
You laid your glasses aside and tossed yourself at him. He fell on his back with you on his top, your legs in a tangled mess. As he wrapped his arms around your waist, he wheezed.
"I hope you're not dumb at this stuff because I hopelessly am."
"Whaddaya meaann?" You were certain he was teasing you. You clicked your tongue.
"....Silly! We're a couple now!"
"HAHAH—wait—you're not joking?? Are you?? No??"
"Do I look like I am?"
"Hah-hah, as in, you're serious-serious? [Y/N]??"
"Do I look like I'm not? Idiot of course I am! You want me to take it back?"
"Nonononono—" you tried your hardest not to cackle, "—I mean of course I do, but—ah! Stupid mouth! Uhm—well—if that's the case then why should I decline when I really like you for—for a long time now!"
"I'm going to pretend to be shocked. But I—I like you too.. I was just waiting for, uhm, you, to, uhm, confess to me, but that sounds so unlikely.. So, thank you for staring?"
He stared at you eagerly.
"Darn it, that wasn't cool! Nonono—you know what I mean, don't you...? You stared at me, and I wanted to kiss you, and then we're here.. And and—"
"I love you!"
Matsuda hugged you tighter as you became stiff and red with what he just uttered. It's either you move and explode or you don't, so you didn't.
I love you ...
He loves you. And he means it.
You squeezed your eyes shut and bit your lower lip, though unable to restrain a smile.
You cleared your throat.
"M-Matsu... Do you want to stay the night here?"
"Oh, no! Actually.. I should be heading home by now. I've got work to do tomorrow morning."
"Awh bummer I forgot.. Well, let me assist you back there."
"Thank you. I'll.. I'll visit you more often, I promise! Ah—ahem! It's one of my duties now that I'm your boyfriend.." He rubbed his nape, shy in proclaiming. You blushed.
"Hey, but you can't just disappear from your work otherwise the chief will beat your ass. Besides, you're a baby! Can't have a baby constantly slacking off his work, can we?"
"Hey! I am a tough police officer! I'm far from being a baby like you!"
"Ohohoho look who's whining like one!"
"I—If you keep saying that I really won't visit you!"
"Fine with me. I'll just find others to hang out with."
His sulky pout fueled your eruption of cackling. You put your head on his shoulder and wrapped your arms around his waist from the side.
"I'm only kidding! Of course I only have my eyes set on you!"
"That better be true.. or I will arrest that man trying to steal my girl." He squished your cheeks. "Oh, and that reminds me—I have something to say to you.."
"I bet on my life it's gonna be one of those pickup lines.."
"No no this is a good one, promise! Ehem. Are you a cr—"
"DON'T! I just know what you're going to say! No no no!"
"I haven't even s—"
"I heard that pickup line way to many times already! Don't you dare!"
Matsuda sighed. "At least I tried.. I just wanted to make you smile.."
You shifted behind him, back-hugging him and patting his tummy as you rested your chin on his shoulder.
"There is no need for that when just seeing you can already make me smile.."
Matsuda grinned, placing his hands above yours.
"I didn't know [Y/N] was so cheesy."
"H-Hey! At least it's not as bad as that 'are you a criminal cause you stole my heart' thingy you were going to say!" You protested. He laughed loudly as a response. "Psh. Time to go home now, officer."
"Uh...?" He looked back at you and your position.
"Go go go."
Still confused, he started walking through the backdoor, with you never letting him go. It was not an ideal position, and when he passed by your parents in the living room to bid them goodbye, they only snorted, unable to believe your clinginess.
Once you two were near the front door, you let go of him.
"Goodnight Touta. Please be safe on your way home. Text me as soon as you get home, okay?"
He opened the door, nodding. "Don't worry [Y/N], I will. Although.. I might be safer if you give me a lucky charm."
"What lucky charm?"
He pointed his cheeks. "...Here, please?"
"Aw I thought you'd never ask!" You leaned closer to peck his right cheek. But instead of his cheek, it was his lips that you kissed. Matsuda had turned his face a millisecond just before your lips could press his cheek. You couldn't help but smile in the kiss. He was, too. Eventually you two pulled away, with triumph written all over his face.
"Touta.. You.."
"Ahaha... Is that the time? Oh, byebye [Y/N]! Thank you for the lucky charm. Goodnight, dream a little dream of me!"
He kissed your cheek before leaving your house, looking back every now and then as he walked away, and still waving goodbye to you. You smiled and shamelessly threw flying kisses at him.
You closed the door once he was out of sight, leaning your back against it dreamily. You thought, that night couldn't get any better. You glanced to the right, your parents whose eyeballs looked like it would come out of its sockets greeting you. You laughed and shook your head before they could say anything, and then headed to your room.
And maybe you did dream a little dream of him that night...

i am once again asking for matsuda 🤲 could you do morning cuddles?? like matsuda wakes up before reader and just thinks "wow,,, that's my s/o" 🥴
YES YES YES YES 1000 TIMES YES! I absolutely love Matsu, he’s such a sweet lil babie :’) I love writing for him because he’s just so mushy and goofy lol. So don’t ever shy away from requesting him! I hope you enjoy. <3
Morning Cuddles (Matsuda x Reader)
The bedroom was illuminated with golden sunlight. The curtains were slightly opened, allowing the sun to hit the faces of the two sleeping figures in the bed. They were cuddled closely to each other, spooning. It was you, and your boyfriend, Matsuda. Matsuda squinted his eyes open, only for them to be met by a blinding ray of sunlight. He put his hand up, shielding his eyes from the light, and turned to look at the alarm clock on the table beside the bed. 10:15 AM. A brief rush of panic swept over his body as he thought he was going to be late for work.
Matsuda had been making a lot of mistakes at work lately. Who could blame him? Being a part of a secret task force to hunt a dangerous killer is stressful. His boss, Chief Yagami, wasn’t exactly thrilled with him at this point in the investigation. Being late to work just wasn’t an option. It only took a few quick seconds of panic before he realized that it was Saturday, and he didn’t have to go to work. He let out a sigh of relief, allowing himself to flop back down on the bed. The bed felt warmer than usual, he noticed. He turned his body over to face you, still asleep under the covers.
He had forgotten you had spent the night last night. All he could do was stop and stare. Your messy (h/c) hair sprawled all over the pillow. Your beautiful sleeping face glowing in the morning sunlight. Your chest rising and falling with your gentle breaths. To Matsuda, you looked absolutely ethereal.  How did I get so lucky? He thought to himself, still admiring you as you slept.
He was completely stunned that he had landed someone of your beauty. Not to mention your kind heart, and the way you always made him laugh. You were truly one of the best things that ever happened to him, and he didn’t think he deserved you. Even his co workers would agree, he was damn lucky to have someone like you.
You must have felt him staring at you, because a few seconds later you woke up. You opened your eyes to see a messy-haired, old t-shirt clad Matsuda looking down at you. His eyes were always so gentle looking. His expression was a loving one.
“Good morning, baby,” He said sweetly.
“Good morning,” You said, still half asleep.
“Were you watching me?” You asked.
His cheeks turned pink. “Uh, well, yeah but not in a creepy way I swear!”
You giggled. He was always acting so nervous, like he was in trouble or something. You cut off his rambling by placing a small kiss on his lips.
“It’s okay. I think it’s kind of sweet,” You said, earning an even darker blush.
“I was just looking at you because you’re so beautiful. I was wondering to myself how I even got someone like you,” He admitted.
You felt your face begin to heat up as well. You could tell he meant what he said. He really did love you with all his heart.
“Matsuda, what did I ever do to deserve you?” You asked him.
“To deserve me?” He asked, seeming thrown off by the question.
“Yeah. You’re so incredibly kind. And you would do anything for me. You always tell me how beautiful I am and take such good care of me, and you’re always making me smile. And on top of all that, handsome. I don’t know how I got so lucky,” You told him.
“Y/n...” He said, clearly at a loss for words. Instead of telling you how he felt, he decided it was better to show you. He leaned down to you, planting a hard kiss on your lips. You kissed him back, deepening the moment. One thing led to another, and he was now on top of you. You wrapped your arms around his neck, never once pulling your lips away from his. You wrestled your way around until the positions were switched and you were now sitting on top of him while he was laying down.
“Come here, you,” He said playfully, pulling you down onto the bed beside him. You erupted into a fit of laughter as you fell. You kissed his neck once more as you laid beside him. He turned to wrap his arms around your waist and pull you close to him.
“I love you, y/n,”  He said, kissing the top of your head.
“I love you too,” You said, cuddling up to his warm chest.

Score of zero: Love (”Gym” pt.2)
@ everybodyhatesluh asked: “I need part 2 of "gym"! Plss! Where the reader tells her love for L! And then her dad askes her who is her boyfriend! I would Love! Luh~💫💛🦋"
Tennis references~
I like putting L in a difficult position, ehehe~
pairing: L x Yagami!fem!reader
warning: fluff I guess?
requested: yes
Remember English is not my first language (and it’s a bit late here) so I’m sorry about the mistakes in my stories.
Tumblr media
«"Chocolate Covered Strawberry Brownies"? No, I don't have the mould»
Flip.
«"Heart-Shaped Cake"? Too obvious»
Flip.
«"Strawberry Shortcake Fudge"? It's too pink»
Y/N closed the book and groaned. «Ugh! I can't get my head round this! The fact that he loves all sweets bothers me…»
It was late afternoon at Yagami house. Orange sunbeams lighted up the kitchen and the living room creating a relaxing atmosphere, all despite the narrow space of the house. Y/N was alone in that moment: Light was somewhere with Soichiro, Sachiko was visiting one of her friends and Sayu was at school for some project.
Y/N took advantage of the situation to bake something for Hideki on the occasion of Valentine's Day. However, she sensed that Hideki would never reciprocate her feelings: he gave her the impression to be out of her reach.
«Come on! I'm a Yagami, after all! At least I have to try» Y/N leafed again through the cookery book when she heard the front door open.
«I'm home!»
It was Sayu, she came back earlier from school. Y/N quickly tried to hide the cookbook but Sayu entered the kitchen in a rush. «Y/N~ What are you doing?»
«Me? I wanted to bake something…»
«Really? For who?~» Sayu asked with a strange smirk.
«For myself I guess?» Y/N lied hoping Sayu would go away. But her little sister's smirk just grew wider.
«I don’t believe you~» the two sisters stared at each other for entire minutes. They were secretly hoping the other would give in.
Y/N sighed. «Fine, it's for a boy…» she admitted after a while, Y/N couldn’t lie at her cute sister.
Sayu, on the other hand, was squealing like a fangirl. «I knew it! I knew it! My sis has a crush!»
«Sayu please! Don’t yell…and don’t tell dad!»
Once again, the youngest Yagami smirked mischievously. «I will be as silent as the grave…at one condition»
Y/N sighed again. «What condition…»
«You have to help me with homework for a month»
Y/N complained loudly but if it was the price for Sayu's silence, she had to accept it. So Y/N agreed with her sister and together they started to choose a good sweet to give to this mysterious boy. Y/N told her about how they met and how she became infatuated by him despite most people would define him as "weird".
«Since you played tennis with him, why don’t you do something that recalls a tennis match?» Sayu said casually while browsing through the cookbook bored. At first Y/N didn’t pay attention to what she said but then, after a long reasoning, she hugged Sayu very tightly.
«Sayu, you're a genius!»
♰ TIME SKIP ♰
Something in L's plan went wrong. Impossible, nothing planned by him went wrong…but what happened?
Originally, his intention was to get closer to Y/N Yagami in order to find some evidence about his involvement in the Kira case. More in particular, a proof that Y/N's older brother was, indeed, Kira himself. L would appear in the right places at the right moments, he would always say the right things and he would always be a great listener. Of course he already knew everything about the Yagami family so every confidence Y/N would do to him, the greatest detective L was already informed about it. But he acted as if he never heard anything.
Initially, it went well. Y/N was getting closer and closer to him, her confidences became more intimate and she opened more to him. L was even touched when he heard from her –during the period of surveillance- that she was in love with him, he found her cute. In this exact moment everything fell for him. And L fell too…yes, he fell in love with Y/N Yagami.
In this situation we shouldn’t forget about Soichiro. He, being Y/N's father, was more than bothered by what he heard from the cameras in his house. But not because he didn’t trust his Y/N but mostly because he didn’t trust this "boy" she talked about.
«Uhm Chief…are you sure about this?»
«Matsuda, we have to investigate. This boy could be Kira!»
«But Chief…I think your daughter would never date a potential Kira» Aizawa replied looking at his superior with shock.
«Aizawa is right, Yagami-san. Please, focus your energies on the Kira case and not on your daughter's romantic life»
Soichiro snorted, not fully convinced, but Ryuzaki was his superior co-worker and he had to obey. At least for now.
.
.
.
.
«Casual or formal attire?»
«Casual of course. It's not a date…yet»
«Sayu!»
The two sister, together in Y/N's room, were deciding the outfit for Y/N's love confession. Now she understood her classmates' nervousness about Valentine's day.
«Dress or not dress?» Y/N asked unsure in front of the mirror with two cute dresses in her hands.
«Y/N, wear whatever makes you comfortable…even your school uniform if you want»
She nodded at Sayu and chose F/C shirt / blouse / sweatshirt / hoodie paired with F/C pants / skirt / shorts and favourite shoes. In her bag / small backpack she put all her belongings and the cake she baked for Hideki. Y/N applied a little bit of makeup and brushed her H/C hair in a cute hairstyle.
«How do I look?»
«Gorgeous sis~»
Y/N smiled at Sayu and thanked her for all the advices. Shortly afterwards she would confess her feelings for a boy met at the gym.
♰ TIME SKIP ♰
And then, the day came. 14th February. Y/N decided to meet Hideki after one of his tennis matches at the To-Oh University. She was so nervous, she could sense how sweaty the hands were and how the heart was beating fast.
She was going to come back home and to postpone everything when she saw Hideki at the door of the gym.
«Y/N-chan, hello» Hideki walked closed, slouched as always with his tennis racket in one hand. He hadn’t no sweat on him despite the other athletes behind him were tired.
«H-Hideki-kun! Hi…how was the training today?» Y/N wanted to slap herself for the stutter when she greeted him.
«Quite boring, the others were not skilled as you or your brother» he smiled at her clearly moved by that sudden shyness from the second-born Yagami.
«Would you…would you go to the nearby cafeteria? I heard there's a special menu today»
«Gladly Y/N-chan»
And together they went to this new cafeteria near the To-Oh. However, the too much mushy aspect of the place made Y/N regret the offer she made to Hideki.
«Ah today is Valentine's Day…» Hideki said once inside the cafeteria, looking curiously around like a child inside a toy store: pink and red hearts everywhere –even sweets and candies had that shape-, a strawberry scent filled the air and on TV there was a famous musical.
The waiter asked if Y/N and Hideki were a couple and Y/N quickly said they were only friends. With a fast look, Y/N noticed that Hideki didn’t flinch at that statement. Maybe he really didn’t fell anything for her. A wave of sadness and disappointment hit her like a train and suddenly she started to hate that day.
Hideki and Y/N, once the waiter showed them a table, sat down they talked about many things: sport, University, school and about Kira too.
«What do you think of Kira, Y/N-chan?»
«Well…» she thought for a bit before answering. «It doesn’t matter how noble their ideals are, killing people is always a crime. So I hope this L will catch them»
«Yes, I hope it too»
The two of them were so much focused on their conversation that they didn’t notice someone recognised them from the shop window.
«Matsu look! Isn't that Ryuzaki?» Misa was looking at the shop window searching for something to buy for Light when she spotted a familiar black haired boy who was crouched on the chair instead of sitting.
Matsuda, who was with her according to L's orders, spied inside the cafeteria and he recognised not only Ryuzaki but Chief Yagami's daughter too. «That's Light's sister! So the famous "boy met at the gym" is Ryuzaki! I have to tell the Chief»
In that moment, Y/N grew nervous when she remembered the cake in her bag / small backpack. And Hideki must have noticed it.
«Are you alright, Y/N-chan?»  his monotone voice distracted the young girl from her nervous thoughts.
«Well…actually no»
«Is something bothering you?»
«I…have something to tell you, Hideki» she shifted anxiously in the chair.
«What is it?» again, Hideki's emotionless voice didn’t suggest her what he was feeling. Had she to continue? Or was it better to end the "date" there?
Her shaking hands curled into fists, determination was clear in her E/C eyes. «If I tell you I… You know… Care about you… Would you laugh at me? I never felt so good around someone…for once I was not Light Yagami's sister or Chief Yagami's daughter. With you I can be just Y/N, a girl who clearly cannot even choose a proper place to confess, eh!» she chuckled at the last part, maybe her attempt to wash away her current nervous state.
Then she took a cute pastel purple box from the bag / small backpack and placed it on the table. «I made this…for you» she didn’t dare to look up at him, scared of his reaction.
Y/N heard he took the box and slowly he was opening it. Its contents were chocolate-covered cake balls that recalled tiny tennis balls. «Since I first saw you after a tennis match, I thought it would be nice doing something in memory of that day» she added shortly after, her gaze was still focused on her lap.
On the other hand, despite from outside he would appear calm and composed, L was panicking inside. He knew Y/N was going to confess, he knew what day was…so why that confession, those simple words hit him so hard?
"Internal check: sweaty hands, dry mouth, quickened heartbeat and…warm face. Wait…warm face?" L thought while observing the tiny cakes in front of him.
Yes, L was blushing and his brain was in tilt. Too many thoughts, too many emotions so suddenly. It floored him.
«But it seems…I imagined everything» Y/N broke the embarrassing silence that filled the air between them. Her voice cracked showing how much hurt she was. «Thank you for your time, Hideki-kun…and sorry» she stood up and bowed at him.
She was going to leave the cafeteria when a strong grip at her wrist stopped her. She turned and a tint of pink painted her cheeks, in front of her one of the cutest sight: a tomato-red Hideki who was looking away embarrassed.
«Excuse me, Y/N-chan, I have to say something against what you said earlier…»
«Uh?»
«I apologise if I didn’t reply to you but…hm…I don’t know the protocol for this kind of situations. Few moments ago I had so many thoughts in my mind but my mouth wasn’t able to formulate a proper phrase» L started to say, now it was his turn to be embarrassed, something so rare for him. «And about what you said before…I accept them. Your feelings, I mean. People like you are rare and precious…and since I always want the best, I want you by my side» he moved his dark eyes on her noticing she was even redder than him.
Y/N was staring at him in disbelief. Did she hear it right? He said…he accepted her feelings. She wasn’t dreaming, right?
«So…would you eat those sweets with me?» Hideki asked her and she nodded with a bright smile on her face.
At the same time, at the HQ, Matsuda informed Soichiro about what he saw at the cafeteria. At those words, Soichiro became gloomy and baffled.
«Ryuzaki is my daughter's boyfriend and my superior co-worker…this is even worse than I imagined»
Aizawa and Mogi were looking at him concerned. «Matsuda…you owe me 30.000¥» (A/N: something like 275$ USD with the actual exchange rate).
The young detective sighed defeated and gave the money to Aizawa.
«I knew I was right all along»

Sleel early autumn outfit, featuring nadeshiko (pinks) patterned kimono, and a summer weave obi with embroidered flying insects (dragonfly, cricket, grasshopper, wasp/hornet).
I like how mature this kimono look. Nadeshiko are often depicted in a sweeter pastely way so its a nice change

Phinal Round: Prelude
A contemplative hush hung over the stadium as Bug returned to perform their heartfelt (corefelt?) rendition of Danny Boy.  Tears were shed. Tissues were exchanged.  The previous year’s trophy was placed on a pedestal at the far end of the ring.
“It’s been a good year, and you’ve been a good weapon,” Bug said to the trophy before joining Tali in the VIP box.
Tali, meanwhile, was still drying her eyes on her coatsleeve.  “Thanks for that song, Bug.  The only thing that could’ve made it more touching is a sick kazoo baseline.”
“...Thanks?  I guess?”
Bug settled in to the seat reserved for last year’s winner.  Danny, Sam, and Tucker sat in front of them, though Tucker, at least, would’ve preferred to be behind where he didn’t have to worry about Bug tossing popcorn onto his beret. (They scored twelve pieces before Tucker noticed.)  (Vic, who was sitting by Bug, began plucking the pieces off and eating them.  Normally she wouldn’t do this, but after downing [READACTED] number of ecto lattes, some of her sense of personal space was inhibited.)
Tali spoke into their magical kazoo while the arena was still relatively quiet.
“Welcome one, welcome all, to the PHINAL ROUND of the 2020 Phandom Phight Club!  Thank you all for coming out from your respective corners of the ghost zone, whether from the distant Far Frozen or Pariah’s Keep, the terrifying Nightmare Valley or Carnivorous Outskirts, we hope you’ve felt welcome in our Denny’s this month.  We wouldn’t be here without all of your interest, support, love, affection, and most of all, poopposts! So extra special thanks to all our phighters who came and put their memes to the test.”
Applause sounded from the audience, as well as a few confused whispers of “poopposts”?
“We’d also like to thank our new announcers from this year!  Nick won’t be announcing this round, as his full energy is being devoted to avoiding the dreaded Vibe Check from Aurora.  He is currently being guarded by our security team, but let’s give him a round of applause anyway, along with our other announcers, Luma, Matsu, and Bug!”
More cheers rang out, with a few scattered audience members waving tiny crabs, wearing horribly-colored apparel, saying nice things about themselves, or eating hot pockets in honor of the announcers.
“And let’s not forget the hard work of Mod Vic, either!  She made the Phighter IDs that get you into the ring, and also helps wrangle rowdy anons, and kept me from making an idiot of myself while I had the Ghost Flu.  So thanks Vic, you’re the most not-precious of us all.”
“She’s precious,” Bug said with a smirk, causing Vic to cross her arms.
“At least Tali believes me.  ...I think.”
“Alright, now that we’ve gone through all the mushy stuff: What you’re actually here for!  Ectoplasm, guts, and straight up brawling!  We’ll start with our 3rd place phight, and then move on to the PHINALE!!!”
“Three exclamation points,” Vic said to herself.  “Can no one else hear that?”
“And yet you ignore the ph,” Danny shook his head.  “That stopped being phunny, like, phorever ago.”
“And just phor that, I’m writing it into your dialogue.”  Tali smirked.  “Now, without phurther ado… let’s introduce our third place phighters!”

🌺 (for Jyushimatsu)
Ichika: He’s…a nice little brother.
ESP Kitty: Oh, how could I describe the love I have for my little brother? I love him more than anyone else, more than the moon, more than I could possibly understand. He’s always there for me when I need him, and even when I don’t. I don’t know why, but he actually believes in me. He believes I can get better, that I can do whatever I want. He always wants to make me happy, to make me smile, to make me enjoy life. I’m not sure what I ever did to get a brother like him, but whatever I did it must have been something great.
I worry at times that he’ll get tired of me and move on, never wanting to see me again. When those feelings come I just want to hug him. I always want to protect him more harm, but it seems he’s the one always protecting me.

The Ring
Rating - Teen, for cursing
Main Pairing: Bakugou x Koge foused, featuring Matsuki Side Pairing: Kirishima x Nene
Words:  2533
“I can’t do this. What the fu- I mean, what the hell am I supposed to do?!”
Bakugou was sure to catch his curse, reminded of his sons presence by the feeling of him bouncing a bit in the carrier on his back. Although the child was still barely in the stages of learning to say simple words, Bakugou had learned to catch his curses around the child, especially when in the presence of his lover. She may have not been with him at the moment, but the habit had stuck with him, even so far as to catch himself when he didn’t have his son with him. Though, accidentally cursing in front of a child who had no idea what the words even meant was the least of his worries. What was truly on his mind was the nearly impossible task at hand.
“Chill out, man. You know that she’ll like anything that you get her. You’re way overthinking it.” Kirishima reached up to run his fingers through his hair, a bit frustrated with it being down in its natural state. “I mean… You’re so stressed, we’re even incognito for this.” Bakugou huffed, shoving his hands into his pant pockets. “Of course we are. Imagine being swarmed by fans that recognize us just because of our hair. Put your hat back on!” Glaring at his friend, Bakugou watched as Kirishima begrudgingly followed instruction, placing the black cap back onto his head. “Alright, alright. I just hate it.”
“Well, you agreed to it, so you can’t complain now.” Bakugou took a moment to adjust his own, which was a black straight bone cap with a large red X on the front. Sure, it was his own merch, but he figured that would help him be a bit less noticeable. He saw tons of these hats on the streets, his fans wearing them along with the other varieties, so it wasn’t as if he stuck out. If he were not wearing his hat to cover his hair, he knew that he would be swarmed, instantly recognizable. It was the only thing that he could think of to be able to go shopping for wedding rings in peace, and if he had to be hidden, then so did his friend. The only ones who didn’t have to be dressed up was the child on Bakugou’s back and the woman on Kirishima’s arm.
“Kiri, you actually look good in hats.” Nene began, looking up at her husband with a curious stare. “You don’t think so?” Face flushing a bit, Kirishima reached up to rub the back of his neck, chuckling softly. “Ah, well, no. But I just like to spike my hair and all. It’s my look!”
“Well your look would get us noticed, so shut up.” Bakugou snapped, eyeing the approaching jewelry store with a nervous glare. “I want to do this as unnoticed as possible. Could you imagine how crappy that would be? If it’s on the news that I’m shopping for wedding rings before I’m even able to ask Koge?” Kirishima sighed, nodding in agreement. “Yeah, I get that. It’s alright, man, we got this. Have you looked at all?”
The furrowing of Bakugou’s brow told Kirishima his answer, which was a big fat ‘no’. “Oh. Uhm. Do you at least know her ring size?”
“Yeah, I know that. But I haven’t looked otherwise… Besides work, I just haven’t been able to get away from her since she’s home all the time with Matsu. I mean, I had to make up this father-son time excuse just to make her stay home.” Bakugou rubbed his face, giving a sigh. “I love her, but it’s hard to get her to stay home if I’m going out, just because she wants to be around me all the time.”
Nene giggled softly, adjusting the strap of her backpack a bit on her shoulder. “Ko-chan is just completely smitten with you. It’s so cute! Sometimes she’ll even go on and on about you like she did during high school! The way her eyes sparkle and she gets all blushy, it’s adorable!” Nene was unaffected by Bakugou’s annoyed scowl, smiling at him. “You get the same way, Katsu. You two are just destined to be together! Such an adorable romance story--”
“Will you shut up with that mushy crap before I puke, damn! Listening to you and your romantic bullcrap is like shoving glass into my ears!” Bakugou snapped at Nene, throwing open the door to the jewelry store before storming his way inside. Nene giggled, following him inside as Kirishima caught the swinging door with his foot, allowing her in first. “But that’s why you invited me, isn’t it? Because I’m a hopeless romantic and I know everything about this wedding stuff.”
“No, I invited you because you’re Utsuro’s best friend and you know stuff about her from a different point of view.” Bakugou glowered down at the redheaded woman, who was still looking up at him with a cheeky smile. “Ooh? So my opinion is important.”
“Not important enough for me to tolerate your irritating nonsense! Kirishima, put a muzzle on her or something, damn!” Bakugou stopped at a chair the store had set up near the entrance, unbuckling the baby carrier. Carefully bringing the carrier and its precious cargo around to his front, he sat it down on the chair and scooped Matsuki out, wanting to give him a break. Kirishima chuckled, rubbing Nene’s back gently. “But I like her nonsense.” He took the carrier as it was shoved towards him, slinging it over his shoulder. “Sure, I’ll hold it.”
“Thanks…” Bakugou mumbled as he headed towards one of the jewelry cases, which had a sign above it that indicated it was engagement and wedding rings. Holding his son carefully on his hip, he stopped at the glass case, glowering down at the the rings inside. “There’s so many of them.” Nene came up beside him, looking curiously into the case as well. “Ah, but they’re so pretty! Kiri, look at that one!” She pointed down at a particularly intricate ring, with three diamonds and a braided band. Kirishima stopped behind her, leaning against the counter with his arms on either side of her body. Placing a soft kiss on the top of her head, he let his body rest against hers, peering down at the ring she was pointing out. “Yeah baby, that one is nice. Though I think it’s a little too intense for Koge.”
Bakugou sighed, rubbing his chin with his free hand. “I don’t even know what she would like… Usually she likes simple things, but for this… I wonder if she would want something more flashy.” Nene smiled, tapping her finger on the glass a bit. “Hmm… Y’know, even though I’m sure she’d love to flaunt it, she’s still more into the modern style. I think simple. In between. You don’t want her to have to remove it while she’s working and stuff if it’s too big or flashy.”
“True…” Bakugou moved down to a different section where more simple styles were displayed, setting Matsuki down on the counter. The child kept latched onto his father’s shirt, sucking on his pacifier as he looked around nervously at his new surroundings. Bakugou rubbed his back gently, giving a small sigh. “I don’t know, Matsu. Your mom is a pain.” Matsuki bounced a bit, though stayed mostly calm, allowing his father to shop in peace. Eventually, a man approached him from the other side of the counter, dressed in formal wear and surrounded by a cloud of ‘paid by commission sales person’.
“Hello! Welcome in! Is there something you’re interested in seeing?” The man spoke in a kind but slightly condescending tone, annoying Bakugou nearly instantly. “Uhm… Yeah. Just looking at the engagement rings and wedding bands that match… Though I have no idea what I’m really looking for.”
Both men looked down at Nene as she shuffled her way over, Kirishima still beside her. “That’s why I’m here! It’s for a very petite woman who prefers slick modern style. Silver only and not a huge stone. But something still unique because she’s pretty quirky, she’d want something different from everyone else.”
The sales person chuckled softly. “Oh my, are you sure you’re the one marrying her, Sir?” Bakugou glowered at the man, scooping his son back into his arms. “Ha ha. How very not funny. That’s her best friend. I’m not here to joke around.” Nene couldn’t help but to giggle softly at how annoyed Bakugou got at the joke, covering her mouth with her fingertips as she did. “Aw Katsu, I’m sorry. I won’t butt in anymore unless you ask.”
Bakugou calmed a bit as he looked from Nene back to the rings, bit of a frustrated pout on his face. “That’s not it… Guess I just feel stupid not knowing what she’d like.” Kirishima sighed, ruffling Nene’s mess of curly hair gently. “You saw me trying to pick something for Nene. It’s not easy, man. Though when I saw the right one it was more of just… A feeling, like it was right.” Bakugou scoffed, glancing down at Nene’s rings on her finger. “Yeah, and it’s gaudy as hell.”
“It’s perfect! I love it. His instinct was right.” Nene waddled a finger at Bakugou, who rolled his eyes and moved down to a different case. The salesman gave a small cough to clear his throat, adjusting his jacket a bit. “I apologize, I didn’t mean to offend. Though, your friends are correct. Most people that come in to buy for their partners say they have a feeling of connection with the ring, much like they feel with their lover. It’s quite an intimate experience.”
Ignoring him, Bakugou continued to look, though his eyes were darting from one style to the next with no real recognition of what he was really looking at. “Nene, do you see any?”
Nene hummed softly as she came to stand closer to him, taking Matsuki’s hand as he reached for her. Rubbing the babies soft skin, she pointed to a couple as she noticed them. “That one there. Those two are nice. Oh, I love that one, but it’s more my style--”
“I want one I can engrave on, too.” Bakugou interrupted her with his mumbling, shifting Matsuki over to her as the child whined for her attention. As Nene took the baby, she looked up at the salesman. “Can most of them be?”
“Ah yes, of course, as long as they have a thicker band. The thin bands cannot be, nor can the ones with diamonds embedded in the band.”
Bakugou sighed, having never been this frustrated over something that he thought would have been simple. It needed to be something that expressed how much he cared about Koge, something that enhanced her beauty and that she would be proud to wear every day. It didn’t help that Koge very rarely wore jewelry as it was, never picking any for herself and only wearing the gifts that Bakugou would get for her. She may be small, but she wasn’t delicate or fragile, and he didn’t want to get something that made her look too dainty.
Suddenly, a soft grunt from his son caught his attention, looking down at him in Nene’s arms. He was looking into the glass, his hand pressed firmly against it and his pale blue gaze locked on the shimmering jewelry inside. Nene leaned over to see what he was looking at, curious as well. “What is it, Matsu? See something you like?” The child squealed softly behind his pacifier, digging his tiny fingers into the glass a bit. Bakugou peeked over right below the child, a bit surprised at what he saw.
Now, he couldn’t be sure that this was the ring that his son was looking at, nor could he really understand why he hadn’t noticed it before. Tucked up near the top edge of the case, a three set of rings rested, glistening beneath the case lights. A matching engagement ring and two wedding bands. The bands were plain silver, nothing entirely special behind them besides the symbolism. But the engagement ring just screamed Koge to him, and he thought he finally understood what Kirishima had meant.
“Let me see that one.” Bakugou pointed to it, prompting the salesman to open the back of the case. Carefully, he removed the entire small display of all three rings, setting them in front of Bakugou and away from the curious hands of the baby.
“Ah yes, this is a great choice for what you said about your lover. It’s a peekaboo round cut diamond set in a brilliant six prong floral center. With the band a bit wider at the bottom here, you are easily able to engrave. It’s a delicate but bold design with a very unique pattern for something so sleek.”
Bakugou glanced at the salesman like he was speaking in a completely different language before he focused on the ring, only giving a small grunt in response. Taking it so that he could look at it closer, Bakugou found that he very much liked it, even so far as to feel a bit emotional looking at it. “What do you think, Nene?” Carefully, Nene took it from him, holding it out of the reach of the curious child. “Oh I think it’s beautiful. It looks just like her! Right, Kiri?” Kirishima nodded, giving his friend one of his typical sharped tooth grins. “I like it! Awesome pick, man. It’s not super girly, but still soft.”
“Just like her!” Nene handed the ring back to Bakugou so he could look at it again, grumbling to himself softly. His crimson gaze moved down to Matsuki, who was staring at the ring with wide eyes. “You like it, squid?”
Matsuki smiled wide at his father’s attention, clapping his hands as he squealed. Bakugou couldn’t help a small smile from creeping upon his lips, handing the ring back towards the salesman. “That one it is, then.”
“You’re not curious about the price, sir? Most shoppers want to find the best deals.”
Bakugou shook his head. “I don’t care about the price. Whatever it is, she’s worth every penny.”
Nene gave a soft squeal, hugging the baby to her chest as she walked away to allow Bakugou the privacy of purchasing the ring. “Aw Matsu, your daddy is such a romantic! My heart!” Kirishima chuckled at the way Bakugou’s face flushed, glaring at his wallet as he opened it up to pull out his photo ID and credit card. “Geez man, I think you might just sweep my wife right off her feet.”
“I am not a romantic! That crap makes me sick!” Bakugou snapped, shoving the cards into the salesman's hands. Kirishima followed after his wife, who was bouncing with the baby and dancing with him along to the music playing in the store. “Sure, sure. Koge tells me otherwise.”
Before Bakugou could retort, the salesman gasped, eyes on Bakugou’s ID card. “Y-you’re a famous pro hero! Oh my god!”
“Oh for fucks sake…”
“I told you, man. These hats? Pointless.”

Ieiri Leo Lyrics: Spark
English translation and romanization below the cut.
ENGLISH
What are you waiting for, staring out at the blue ocean? Give me an answer! I...
Just shut up with all that “It’s ‘cause you’re a girl” and “It’s ‘cause I’m a guy” stuff I am who I am. Sometimes I even go with ‘boku’ too It all just depends on my mood
You spend every day checking your answers Are you living the way your heart’s telling you to? C’mon and go on a trip with me without looking for shortcuts
What are you waiting for, staring out at the blue ocean? Give me an answer! I'm right here I wanna know why I was born. I don’t even dislike crying, now
How many minutes until my alarm goes off? I wanna ignore my To Do list and sleep in bed But I can’t just give up and say I better try hard tomorrow
We’re going to live honestly through another 24 hours today Picturing ourselves walking along the horizon
I scream and cry, staring out at the blue ocean What should I do? I just feel so empty There’s scenery out there I’ll only get to see if I keep going I believe, now
“It’s ‘cause you’re a girl,” you say, “It’s ‘cause I’m a guy,” you say Well, I am who I am. I am who I am
I feel a sense of despair every time I talk about a similar future When I start worrying about things, I’m gonna work out and have a bunch of fun hanging out
You’re there on the other side of the blue ocean Just feeling you there will make me a stronger person I know why I was born, now. I won’t cry anymore
I scream and cry, staring out at the blue ocean What should I do? I just feel so empty There’s scenery out there I’ll only get to see if I keep going I believe, now
