“Oh. Work, you know. It’s been… well, you know. Keeps me occupied,” Maurice said, picking up his scattered suit and tossing it in a bin.

“You never called.”

“Simply didn’t have time to, I’m afraid.”

“No time in months? Maurice, you never even wrote.”

Maurice involuntarily let out a bitter laugh. “Well, we know how that went last time I did that.”

“Maurice—”

“Clive, I think it’s best if I turn in for the night. I am quite exhausted and I need to have enough energy to travel back home and be with my family.”

Maurice visits Penge for the first time in months. An unfortunate storm isolates him with Clive, but for better or for worse?

every fandom i've been in has been rpf or at least historical so i usually just lean very heavily on canon and history tbh! but i was thinking about merchant & ivory and in particular maurice (1987) earlier today and i do think as a cishet woman i subconsciously draw on that a lot to interpret same-sex relationships.

Fanfic Fusion: Maurice (1987) & The Blues Brothers (1981)

I wanted to combine two of my favourite movies. And what would be better than reviving the restaurant scene from BB with Ivory’s/Forster’s characters?

The Same Old Story – list of media mentioned

When I wrote this, I incorporated lines from films in the story. I didn’t want to mention the name of the film if it didn’t feel natural for the character to mention it, so here’s a list for anyone who reads it and it’s interested (and also to have a link to include at the end of the fic lol). I’m also adding everything that inspired me in some way (that I remember) 

Chapter 1: 

As time goes by – It’s the theme song of the romance in Casablanca (1942)

Not ever explicitly referenced, but Laura (1944) inspired me when I was picking the elements: the portrait, a woman in front of her vanity as danger looms, and it’s what got me thinking about clocks. If another movie influenced me here… I don’t remember lol 

Chapter 3: 

The window idea was inspired in part by a scene reading from Maurice (1987). I’m totally going by memory here, I might be wrong about the details. Skip the italicized quote if you’re planning to watch it and don’t want the ending spoiled!

Steel bars from windows are often used to frame a character who is feeling caged or trapped in some way. (Or wooden bars, I remember Hitchcock using a stair to accomplish this in Shadow of a Doubt.) In the ending, Hugh Grant’s character (who is afraid of being outed/an outcast and married a woman for a better political position iirc) is closing the windows, but then he stops in front of one to contemplate his past romance with the titular character Maurice. He doesn’t close it: he’s wistfully remembering a simpler time (schoolboy days).

The visual language is communicating that he’s doing so from the inside of a cage. In the very last shoot of the film, we see husband and wife, behind bars. The steel bars remain so very visible (the fact that they’re white really makes them pop). Heteronormativity is a prison!

Chapter 4: 

The lonely people quote is from A Stolen Life (1946) (not the one from 2018, pretty sure that one doesn’t have Evil Twins. It certainly doesn’t have Bette Davis, which is a point against it)

Chapter 5:

I was thinking of Shadow of a Doubt (1943) when I decided I wanted to have a scene with a car in a garage. However, it ended up not being dangerous and more being about Feelings. 

Chapter 6:

I mention it in the chapter: Sullivan’s Travel (1941) There’s this neat little bit of commentary in the film that I used. 

The leading lady is never named in the film. When the credits roll, Veronica Lake’s character is simply “The Girl” – says a lot. 

Chapter 7:

The title Mad About The Boy is a song about developing feelings for a male film star, written in the 30s by Noël Coward (who was gay) but if I’m not mistaken, most famously performed by Dinah Washington in 1961 (which is the version I listened to the most). A banger, if you ask me. 

Chapter 8:

They’re watching The Lady Eve (1941) a movie where Barbara Stanwyck makes a fool out of Henry Fonda’s character for more than an hour and still gets her bag at the end. I wanted to use a Film Noir with her at first but I figured a more overly romantic movie fitted better here. 

Chapter 9: 

Prisoner of Love (1946) is the name of the song the husband hears. Perry Como’s version. 

They’re watching Sweet Smell of Success (1957). Why this movie? Because I wanted to use this: “You’re dead, son. Get yourself buried.” –  an absolute banger of a line said by an absolute psychopath of a character says before hanging up. And here I made it horny and gay.

Chapter 10:

I mentioned in the chapter: Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953). The title is part of the iconic Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend. I also mention Greatest Love of All by Whitney Houston. "Loving yourself is the greatest love of all” – a message best heard performed live by the voice.

Chapter 12:

They’re watching Leaver Her To Haven (1945). Movie is wild as hell and in technicolor! It also influences most of what happens in the chapter. 

Chapter 13:

They’re watching City of the Dead (1960) also known as Horror Hotel. 

Chapter 14:

They’re watching The Apartment (1960). A Movie!!! This is Cinema, to me. This is a comedy, and it also just fucks you up. I might or might not have teared up multiple times while watching it.

Chapter 15:

Gaslight (1944) inspired the final scene in the house. It’s part of what inspired the whole fic in the first place, and it was one of the very first scenes I wrote (even though the final version is very different from my first draft). Since I did this first I knew everything that happened in the house would lead to this moment, but i didn’t sweat it. If it works, it works. If it doesn’t, we can still say “the typos and mistakes we find along the way” are The Real horror (I didn’t have a beta and didn’t proofread with fresh eyes!).

And that’s all! (I think)

As a bonus, I wanted to use this quote from All About Eve (1950) (and bring up Bette Davis, an actress whose audiences were drawn to for her portrayal of unlikable women – something I would’ve used with Agatha, a character who can come across as unlikeable, which I think it’s an interesting part of her that both humanizes her and makes her go against trope) but alas, I couldn’t find the space for it. So my intentions shall live here: 

“Lloyd, honey, be a playwright with guts. Write me one about a nice, normal woman who just shoots her husband.”

my Year In Review then:

Spotify makes no mention of the Kirby ost at all?? But as last.fm points out it was a big part of 2022 for me.

I played Planet Robobot for the first time (and Kirby's Adventure and Super Star Ultra) in Feb and was basking in Kirby and fun/peppy music the first half of the year. I saved Triple Deluxe for later because I enjoyed PR so much I want to savour a first playthrough of a 3ds kirby era game again.

Maybe Baby is there in Feb because it fueled my kirby/metakabi feelings and I had it on repeat for two weeks, iirc... why exactly honestly lol it felt fitting to my mood at the time. I like the song for itself though, it's fun.

The SECOND half of the year I had the most embarrassing Sherlock phase out of... nowhere... actually, one thing lead to another from watching Fantastic Beasts with family in May and being disappointed by it, watching and thinking "why am I watching this when I can just read cherik fic" and then indeed doing that instead. Also a lot of not wanting to give JKR my time and energy lol we pirated that sh. Fast forward to August/September where I'm slowly coming down from combing the mystrade ao3 tag and exclusively consuming brit films and music from the 80s/90s for months... orz (as an aside this led me to watch Maurice (1987) and read the novel too, which is now one of my favs). For the record, I did not watch Sherlock BBC at all throughout this lol I perused the ao3 tag and the tag only for months. I deliberately chose to live on my and other people's delusions. It's a good thing mystrade barely have any substantial interactions in the show itself but work so well in theory that accepting headcanons and extrapolations at face value was easy xD It's free real estate!!!

I'm not sure how to salvage and rechannel all the emotional investment I put in during this time but oh well. I've saved a bunch of excellent fics to reread in the future, at the very least. My whims were hard to resist this year :'| but also to be fair I moved from interest to interest very organically overall. If I had to label this year, it'd be "rabbit hole".

Er all this meandering is meant to explain all the britpop in my wrapped/last.fm, is what I was trying to get at.

Lastly, in both lists there's my ol' reliables I always go back to listening when I can't stand anything else.

Maurice Ships

Last week, I re-watched Maurice (1987) with my friend and we had discussion about how if Clive was being honest with Maurice he might able to have both Maurice and keep his position (including his marriage with Ann). We joked around about the two couples (Maurice/Alec & Clive/Ann) being in a poly (especially after reading Christmas 1928) and here’s my headcanon about their dynamics.

Alec-Ann : the sunshine duo

these always brighten the room every time they enter. they have witty jokes and sometimes they don’t have filters (Alec doesn’t really think before he talk). Alec enjoys getting intro trouble and Ann sometimes joins in - encouraging such behaviour because she finds it funny. When leaves alone, Alec always managed to drag Ann into one of his shenanigans

Clive-Ann : the married couple a.k.a the parents 

they are the parents. being the only one that is officially “married”, when together they they always end up being the responsible ones. Clive is stoic and Ann will end up being her calming self, the charming housewife. They show their affection subtly with light touches and kisses.

Clive-Maurice : the “newlyweds”

they are in constant honeymoon phase. they light soft awkward touches are their default mode. even though others know that they are lovers, they still very skittish when there are other people around them but they still long to touch each other. there is a sexual tension between them that is sharp enough to cut anyone. every time they are together, they just have this blissful look.

Clive-Alec : the bickering duo

they bicker all the time. they argue like old-married couple although they are not in any romantic capacity. Alec always take a jab at Clive’s poshness and Clive will get back at him for his uncouth manners. It is great entertainment for Ann and Maurice. However, they do care for each other. Alec like to fuss over Clive, just like how he likes to fuss over Maurice, although he ends up nagging Clive a lot more. Clive is very passive-aggressive at showing his care for Alec, but he likes it when he able to dress Clive is nice suit.

Ann-Maurice : the awkward duo

they are the quiet ones. leave them alone and they will sit together in silence reading a book. Ann is the talkative one between the two of them and Maurice sometimes feel awkward around Ann, but he is warming up. Ann adores Maurice because Maurice always treat her kindly even before they enter the four-way relationship. Maurice never treats her as a ‘silly woman’ like most of the Cambridge boys. they enjoy having tea time together, sometimes picnic. they found out that they enjoy going on a ride together and just laying down on the grass doing cloud watching. Ann fuss over Maurice a lot.

Alec-Maurice : that PDA couple

they are the couple that you hate so much because they are sickening in love and can’t stop touching each other. Alec will non-stop flirting with Maurice and trying to make him blush at every opportunity. Maurice enjoys playing with Alec’s hair. they are just sickening in love which is very adorable but at the same time made you feel very much lonely.

This is my take of these four characters because I adore them so much now. +)

Clive & Maurice can’t be left alone in the house because they won’t able to take care of themselves. They are useless at household chores or feeding themselves.

Ann & Alec are the ones that good at running the house. They always make sure that Clive and Maurice properly eat. They are the early riser, 5 AM and they are already awake and do most of their to-do lists. Clive & Maurice only wakes up at 8.30 AM.

The four of them enjoy cuddling in front of the fireplace.

The Letters From The Front (1/1): World War I as told by Maurice’s and Alec’s letters. (keep in mind: I have a marginal amount of knowledge about the subject. All I know is via Wikipedia - yes, not even history class because I’m not European and we skimmed through World War I mostly)

Stories From The Green Wood (5/?): Maurice and Alec moved to Oakview in Yorkshire after World War I, where they worked for the generous and kind-hearted Mrs. Evelyn Bailey as woodworkers. (Finally when my brain has gathered enough thoughts and fixated on these snippets of life, I can actually produce a multi-chaptered fic.)

There are a bunch of original characters and other than them I own no rights to Maurice the book or the film. I just really want to honor the work and I hope I do it justice. Enjoy and leave some thoughts!
