Multi-disabled autistic with a special interest in theme parks here to remind you that accessibility passes at theme parks are there for those that need them. Just because you could get one doesn’t mean you should.

If saying this makes me a buzzkill, then it does. I don’t care. People don’t realize the effects their unnecessary use of these resources, and it needs to be said.

I’ve watched people abuse these programs and resources, to the point that my home park completely redid their disability access system recently. Some parks that once had them straight up don’t anymore because those that didn’t need to, ended up using them. Some smaller parks only allow a certain number of passes out at a time, so taking one unnecessarily is so harmful. There’s so many reasons to simply not do this. Not to mention, at some bigger parks like Disneyland, it can be hell to even get a hold of one. They will jump through every hoop to not give one to you, whether that be because so many people were misusing them or plain ableism, they’re still not exactly easy to get in the first place.

I’ve seen so many posts saying “one perk of autism is being able to skip the lines at amusement parks B)” which literally just isn’t even true. Accessibility passes don’t even work like that at most parks these days, they have return time systems. Think Rise of the Resistance at Disney or Fast and Furious at Universal, it’s essentially the same deal. You wait the same time as everyone else in line, just not in the line, you can walk around anywhere else if you want. You come back after the estimated wait time has passed and then go in the exit or whatever entrance they’d use for the fast pass. It’s fair for everyone involved that way.

These programs exist for people who physically can’t stand in lines for hours on end. Due to sensory issues, chronic pain, anger caused by understimulation, the main line not being accessible for mobility aid users, major heat intolerance. Things of that nature. It’s not to skip the line, it’s not a fun add on. It’s an accessibility tool in the same way mobility aids and stim toys and ear defenders are. It’s there to help people who wouldn’t normally be able to have the same experiences as abled people, have those experiences. Stop with the misinformation and encouragement of abusing these resources, it’s annoying and only harms the community.

I’m interested because I feel like when I was in high school/college in the mid-10s, almost nobody smoked - even if you otherwise had some pretty hard vices. I think it was considered not really worth it for something with such a small buzz. But now, idk. Maybe the advertisers are right to target people here because it’s just that popular again??
