Maz Clarke “Here”, the debut album coming to Eyeless Records very soon features raw and candid songwriting with a real poetic sensibility and beautiful guitars including the title track co-written with David K Frampton. We at Utter Sorcery asked her about her favourite records:
CD picnic, Maz Clarke
Out of a rather randomly compiled cd picnic – cds I have been given, saved from old itunes accounts by burning, or old favourites I once bought before spotify – which I keep on the floor of my little car, where I like to listen to whole albums and sing along, there are 5 I currently replay most frequently:
The Velvet Underground – Loaded
I love all of The Velvet Underground, it makes me feel giddy and transported, but Loaded I listen to most because it’s lovely and sunny with lots of oohs and ahhs, and it’s fun to listen to whether it’s Lou Reed or John Cale singing.
Gillian Welch – Time (The Revelator)
I could equally have chosen Soul Journey, these albums are very close to my heart and I sing along at the top of my voice when alone and feel a dark kind of joy and amazement at the beauty of the music. The harmonies are also fascinating and I’m still trying to hear how to sing them.
Talking Heads – Remain in Light
I love everything about Talking Heads, from childhood when I knew all the words to True Stories from long car journeys trapped with 5 albums our family could agree on listening to together (still good ones), and recently I have loved David Byrne’s American Utopia show. Remain in Light is the cd I own and every time I listen to it I pick up something different, and it’s got a driving force. I make up some of the words for myself…
PJ Harvey – Let England Shake
I love driving around Brighton and environs listening to this, it makes me feel connected to the place and its history and timeless songs. It always fits with an English country drive. And it’s PJ Harvey…
Joni Mitchell – Blue
Of course it’s perfection as an album of songs and I will never tire of it. I love the challenge of singing with Joni, it’s impossible to get anywhere near her voice, but it feels wonderful, physically, to try.
If I could choose another it would be any Smog/Bill Callahan, I confess I listen to him quite obsessively…

ASOIAF FANCASTING --> EVERY NAMED FEMALE CHARACTER ABOVE THE AGE OF FIVE, PART XVI
Daenerys Targaryen (b. 284 AC): The youngest child of King Aerys II and his wife Rhaella. When Robert's Rebellion broke out, Aerys sent his pregnant queen to Dragonstone, where she died giving birth to Daenerys. She and her older brother Viserys were smuggled to safety by Ser Willem Darry, who cared for them in a house in Braavos, but after his death she and Viserys ended up wandering the Free Cities. They eventually find refuge at Magister Illyrio's in Pentos, where Viserys concocts a plan to reconquer Westeros with a Dothraki army and weds Dany to Khal Drogo to gain this army. Dany finds strength on the Dothraki sea and settles as a khaleesi, whilst Viserys is killed for disrespecting their customs and threatening his pregnant sister. When Drogo succumbs to infection following a wound, Daenerys tries to revive him with the help of Mirri Maz Duur using black magic, but her unborn son Rhaego is slain for the sacrifice and Drogo is only brought back to be trapped in his dead body. Dany smothers him and burns Mirri Maz Duur on his funeral pyre, where she enters the fire and hatches three dragons out of dragons' eggs that have turned to stone. Now with her own small but loyal band, she travels first to Qarth and then to Slavers' Bay, looking for the means to reconquer Westeros. But rather than purchase fighting slaves, she makes war on the slave cities and devastates Astapor and Yunkai. After taking Meereen, she decides to stay and rule over the city rather than see it fall into chaos. However, she is unable to enact a lasting peace between the freedmen and former slave owners, and after a child is killed by her dragon Drogon, she locks up his brothers (Drogon does not let himself be captured). As part of the attempt to stop attacks on the freedmen, she marries Hizdahr zo Loraq. However, at the reopening of the fighting pits, Drogon returns and spreads devastation until Dany mounts him and flies out of the city. Drogon flies to the Dothraki sea, where the khalasar of Khal Jhaqo, an old enemy, finds her. Fancast: Emilia Clarke.
Daenora Targaryen (b. approx. 215 AC): Youngest child of Prince Rhaegel Targaryen and his wife, Alys Arryn. She was sister to Aelor and Aelora Targaryen. She was married to her cousin, Aerion Targaryen, and had a son, Maegor, with him before his death by drinking wildfire. She was not considered as an heir for her uncle, King Aerys I, and the Great Council of 233 AC passed over her son's claim on account of his infancy and his father's madness. Fancast: Reese Witherspoon.
Daenys Targaryen (b. approx. 128 BC): The daughter of Aenar Targaryen, a dragonlord of the Valyrian Freehold. She foresaw the destruction of Valyria twelve years before it happened. Her father heeded her visions, sold all their holdings in the Freehold, and moved the family to the island of Dragonstone, which became the first seat of the Targaryens in Westeros. She was married to her brother Gaemon, who was later called Gaemon the Glorious, and they ruled Dragonstone together. Fancast: Emily Baldoni.
Princess Daeryssa (Age of Heroes): A princess who, the songs say, was once saved from giants by the legendary knight Serwyn of the Mirror Shield. (My own headcanon: Though likely retconned out of existence, I thought Daeryssa might be a king's daughter from any of the small kingdoms of the age of Heroes, maybe with a mother of Valyrian blood.) Fancast: Seychelle Gabriel.
Dalla (main series era): A serving woman at Dragonstone, part of Stannis Baratheon's staff. Fancast: Jessica Baglow.
Dalla (d. 300 AC): The wife of Mance Rayder, chosen King-Beyond-the-Wall to lead the Free Folk in their flight from the Others. She dies giving birth to her son during the battle between Mance's forces and the army of Stannis Baratheon. Fancast: Julia Ormond.
Dancy (main series era): A prostitute at Chataya's establishment in King's Landing. Fancast: Cintia Dicker.
Danelle Lothston (b. approx. 190 AC): The last of her House, she was the Lady of Harrenhal and Head of House Lothston in her own right. She wore armour and led men into battle, notably when she called her banners to end the Second Blackfyre Rebellion in its infancy at Whitewalls. During the reign of Maekar I, she reportedly turned to the dark arts, which caused her madness and the downfall of the Lothston line. People still tell stories of her bathing in blood and eating children. Fancast: Oksana Butovskaya.
Danny Flint (probably lived after the Conquest): She was a girl who joined the Night's Watch, pretending to be a boy. However, when her secret was found out, she was raped and murdered by her sworn brothers. Her song claims that her ghost still walks the Nightfort. Fancast: Ava Acres.
Darla Deddings (lived 130 AC): During the Dance of the Dragons, rioteers in King's Landing attempted to rape Lady Darla and her brother was killed defending her. Fancast: Kaitlyn Dever.

Watching Star Wars as an Avenger must be funny because you've got:
Oscar Isaac as Moon Knight and Poe Dameron
Natalie Portman as Jane Foster and Padme Amidala
Paul Bettany as Dryden Vos and Vision/Jarvis
Lupita Nyong'o as Nakia and Maz Kanata
Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury and Mace Windu
Mads Mikkelsen as Galen Erso and Kaecillus
Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, Keller, and Orson Krennic
Ming-Na Wen as Melinda May and Fennec Shand
Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian and Aaron Davis
Andy Serkis as Snoke and Ulysses Klaue
Forest Whitaker as Saw Gerrera and Zuri
Hannah John-Kamen as a minor role in Force Awakens and as Ava Starr
Benicio del Toro as DJ and the Collector
Richard Armitage as a Naboo pilot and Hydra assassin
Jon Favreau as Rio Durant, Pre Vizsla, Paz Vizsla, and Happy Hogan
Stellan Skarsgard as a future character and Erik Selvig
Richard E Grant in the First Order and Classic Loki
Cailey Fleming as young Rey and young Sylvie
Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano and Claire Temple
Emilia Clarke as Qi'ra and a future character
Not all of them are obvious, but sometimes just hearing a voice or seeing a background character makes me wonder where I once saw someone, so I included minor characters and voice acting. But do they ever just turn on a movie and are like, "Hey, she kind of looks like the Cavalry, right?"

BFCD Star Wars Day ♡ May 4, 2022
Trying something a little different with this installment. I’ve provided the BFCD links to the characters that are featured on the blog and also the actresses playing the roles. Being a Star Wars event, and that I had time, I wanted to make the ATBF post a little more comprehensive than previous ones, and hopefully it is well received. I didn’t bother with the nameless characters, as I definitely didn’t have the energy to search for their content in the various SW tags, but I still included the links to their tags for this blog, in case you’d like to see their faces again (since most likely their Star Wars portrayal didn’t get a lot of screen time).

tbh england has quite a good depth in terms of defenders but they just aren’t getting called up. someone like maz pacheco has been class for villa. the issue with england is that they refuse to look outside of the “big 3” and now big 4 with united.
englands midfielders tho not great, wsl teams often scout foreign midfielders like brighton with kaagman, chelsea with their entire midfield, even us with kim and mana. even teams like leicester(mostly english) have esmee de graaf(dutch) regularly starting in the place of their english players.
i’ve read some people saying that sarina has her hands tied by the english fa to keep playing all these “big names” like houghton which can also be possible. and yeah england has a bunch of excellent forward depth if their midfield and defence can match up, i can see them potentially doing very well at major competitions
True! Maz Pacheco is indeed very good but she's still young-ish and also feels like she'll break through when the next generation is integrated after the Euros. I'm hoping for Grace Fisk (same age and captained WHU in the Chelsea game just now!) to maybe be part of that too. An anon also mentioned Molly Bartrip a while back as someone who's having a fantastic season for Spurs, maybe she could be considered for CB depth.
Ooo yea that's true about English midfielders being scarce in WSL teams. Wonder why that is tho... and omg the way you said
"chelsea with their entire midfield"
Tumblr media
Oh and the situation that Sarina might be in... seems similar to what Vlatko finds himself in with the USWNT now. Thankfully Carli has finally been taken off his hands but he still has a few more to move on before the WC next year 😬 Anyway regarding this I feel like some veterans are like Houghton are still fine to have in the squad if they have specifically unique qualities on the pitch or a presence so essential in the dressing room (and aren't taking up a deserving youngster's spot), but sometimes I look at certain players and I'm like ma'am why are you still here... 🤨
I actually can't wait for the Eng v Spain match in the Arnold Clark Cup, hope both sides play their strongest possible teams and duke it out lol

I think the build-up for Clark and Lana in Smallville is actually better than the build-up to Max and Liz in Roswell (though that was also still really good). And I bring it up, because until this rewatch of Smallville, I thought it was the other way around (and I was probably thinking of later Clana that annoys me some, even though they're still my OTP for the show). And also since some people see Roswell as the "first and better version of Smallville", I guess? (At least according to TV Tropes.) But I know it all comes down to personal preference. And at the end of the day, both Clana and Dreamers (Maz/Liz's ship name) were handled way better than most couples written today, imo. Since there actually WAS build-up to them.

Outside the context of “bad writing” and the fact that as a character, Dany was done hella dirty— would you have expected anyone to still be loyal to a queen who committed murder on a scale like that? She did deserve a trial, but I’m just asking if in your opinion based solely on Dany’s actions, her once-followers should remain loyal to someone who did that.
Well, the thing is, I think it’s hard to even answer this question outside the “bad writing.” Or, more accurately, I don’t know that my answer to this would even matter, because Dany would never do this. I know the writing shows us that she literally did do this, but the actual character would never do this.
Game of Thrones was 73 episodes long and for 71 episodes Daenerys Targaryen did not kill innocents. She inadvertently killed one when Drogon killed the shepherd’s daughter back before she had control over him. But otherwise, she’s never killed innocents. On the contrary, her show!characterization was in-keeping with the book claim about her that she is, above all, a rescuer.
So it’s hard for me to speculate about what should happen in the wake of her destruction of King’s Landing because it’s so ridiculous and out-of-nowhere to me. Dany’s potential darkness may not be out of nowhere, but Dany murdering civilians on a larger scale than anyone in the history of the show sure was. Even Emilia Clarke, who played the character for nearly ten years, couldn’t see this coming and was shocked and deeply upset by the turn. So again, I think it’s kind of irrelevant whether or not anyone should follow her after she’s done this because the fact that she’s done it isn’t believable, realistic, or sensible.
But just for the sake of your question, I think it’s important to consider who her followers are.
Her remaining army is made up of dothraki, Unsullied, Greyjoys, and Northmen.
The dothraki were portrayed as savages who were only tamed by Dany’s leadership and guidance. Setting aside the problematic racial implications of that writing, the dothraki have burned civilians by putting villages to the torch and raping innocent women. Had they the power of a dragon, I suppose we can assume that under the leadership of a khal, the dothraki would have no problem with acts like Dany’s destruction of KL. They believe themselves superior in kind to other civilizations, like the shepherd village where Dany met Mirri Maz Duur. They had no problems with inflicting extreme violence on others.
The Unsullied, similarly, were raised on a creed of merciless brutality and violence without thought or question. Emotion, remorse, and humanity were systematically stripped from them. Jacob Anderson said in his tribute to Grey Worm that he was a “robot” at first. Essentially Dany and Missandei showed him his humanity. Without them, he would have presumably participated in atrocities akin to what happened at KL without a second thought. So, again, I think it’s safe to say that the Unsullied would not be appalled by Dany’s actions in KL and feel compelled to throw down their weapons and abandon her cause. This is especially true because above all they were raised to be obedient and unquestioning. Dany is their queen. They would never defy her.
And again, the same argument partially applies to the Greyjoys. When Dany treats with Yara and Theon in s6, the terms specify that the Ironborn must stop their practices of raping and pillaging. Yara argues against this, insisting that it is the Ironborn way of life. It is only under Dany’s laws that they would cease this sort of violence and “paying the iron price” for the spoils of war. If Dany abandons those ideals, wouldn’t they celebrate this? It would mean they could go back to their old ways. I would also point out that Yara and the Greyjoys also hate the Lannisters for allying with Euron and sanctioning Yara’s imprisonment and the destruction of much of her fleet. I imagine they’re pleased with Dany’s vengeance, up to a certain point.
So when it comes to the dothraki,Unsullied, and Greyjoys, my answer to your question is yes–they should still follow her. Not because following someone who would commit mass murder is the right thing to do, but because it is apparently in-character for these groups to accept extreme violence (granted, to an extent) and respect strength, even when it’s terrible.
The Northmen are a little more complicated. The show tried to beat us over the head with superior Northern morality this season. At the same time, the moment that Dany started burning the city, the Northmen (with the exception of Jon Snow, of course) were quick to join Grey Worm and the Unsullied in the butchering of unarmed Lannister soldiers and civilians. The attemped rape scene was perpetrated by a Northern soldier, not a dothraki or Unsullied. So, without prompting and even against Jon’s pleas for them to stop, the Northmen readily and enthusiastically participated in extreme violence, despite Northern revulsion toward Dany earlier in the season. They didn’t do it out of loyalty to Queen Daenerys, they did it because, apparently, they wanted to and seized the opportunity to commit violence without consequences. It stands to reason, then, that the Northmen are just as “savage” as anyone else, with just as much innate proclivity to violence. This message isn’t new to the show. The Hound has waxed poetic about how “killing” is the greatest pleasure a man can find. I disagree, obviously, but I think that’s part of the message the writing tried–and failed–to deliver with 8.05.
That being the case, why not follow Dany? She didn’t force them into acts of senseless and appalling violence. They gladly took part in it. They’re equally culpable. The only difference is that they had swords instead of dragons at their disposal. Why should they turn on the Mad Queen when they took part in her madness unprompted?
All that being said, everything that happened from 8.04 onward makes no sense to me whatsoever. None of the characters, even minor characters and average soldiers, have motivations that I can understand. I don’t really feel that my analysis matters because the show went so wildly off the rails that trying to pick apart the morality or logic seems pretty pointless.
Thanks for the ask!
