Nathan Bowles Trio — Are Possible (Drag City)

The Nathan Bowles Trio whips a buggy wagon onto interstellar highways, hammering rustic grooves into motorik repetition until they lift out of the past into the endless now. The trio first convened on Bowles’ 2018 album Plainly Mistaken pushing traditional instruments—banjo for Bowles, string bass for Casey Toll and drums for Rex McMurry—into sprawling psychedelic spaces. Are Possible is sparer but no less adventurous, paring back motifs to essence, locking them in for extended intervals, and allowing repetition to make them flower.
The opening “Dapple” distills a sprightly dance into its architectural elements, letting the play of banjo flourish amid resounding piano chords. McMurry’s drumming both grounds and elevates the agile interplay of stringed instruments; endless vistas reminiscent of his old band, CAVE, open out as he batters and thumps. “The Ternions,” an old-fashioned word for trio, by the way, opens out like a tarmac road stretching to the shimmery distance, its propulsion softened by flurries of lingering overtones. Toll’s bass gets a fuller hearing in “Our Air,” a cut that slants on low-toned plucking into a countrified form of jazz.
Still it’s in the two longer cuts that the trio makes its most indelible mark. “Gimme My Shit” builds in pointillist complexity, a hoedown shifting in and out of Reichian minimalism. “Aims” dips more freely into blues forms, letting the banjo and guitar carry a plaintive porch-lit melody. It gathers itself and swings out wide a minute or so in, a drone sluicing through pizzicato filigrees, a ritual beat carrying the tune forward. Indeed, the drums go knocking and walloping as the piece progresses, turning an inward-looking dreamscape into visceral, body-shifting triumph. All the elements come from pre-electric blues, but the end result is modern, almost futuristic.
The book of Matthew tells us that “With God, all things are possible,” and while I wouldn’t second guess the religious inclinations of any of these three musicians, there is an aura of immanence, of something more than banjo, bass and drums, that infuses these mystic tracks. Many things are possible, too, when you put together three such capable player and give them time and space to transcend themselves.

A totally random thing nobody asked for but every time Vox Machina talks about Captain Damon the airship captain I just picture them doing it like the Bonnie McMurry from Letterkenny skit slow motion and all.

A Holiday Engagement (2011)

Hillary Burns (Bonnie Somerville) is engaged to corporate lawyer Jason King (Chris McKenna) and excited to introduce him to her whole family on Thanksgiving because her mother Meredith (Shelley Long) has been hounding her about it for weeks. Unfortunately, when Jason talks about taking a promotion in Pittsburgh, Hillary is less than excited about moving, so Jason breaks up with her. Hillary panics and her friend Sophie (Edi Patterson) helps her post an online ad for a fake fiancé to take home for Thanksgiving. After a few duds, she meets David (Jordan Bridges).
Hillary and David struggle to navigate Meredith's intense mothering, Hillary's father Roy (Sam McMurry) clearly about to be charged with voter fraud, her older sister Trish (Haylie Duff) flaunting wealth and happiness to cover how lonely she is, and her younger sister Joy (Carrie Wiita) clearly cannot stand her fiancee Peter (Christopher Goodman) the podiatrist. Then, when Meredith presses Hillary to set a date for her wedding, Hillary says that it will be December 21st. So, in like a month. Meredith starts rapidly planning this wedding while David tries to remind Hillary that she is not, in fact, getting married. Hillary says that if Jason does come back to her, the wedding will already be planned and won't that be so nice and not psychotic at all?
This movie reminds me a lot of Because I Said So, but with a holiday edge. It's fun, but it's hard for me personally to understand someone dealing with all of that from their mother. I sure would not. There also was no resolution for the Trish storyline, so maybe she is happy, but I doubt it. I guess we'll never know. Overall, 3 stars.

What is your kitty’s name

i have two! My cat is Beetlejuice. She's black and fat and she loves rolling over onto her back and showing off her weird nipples. (she is on a diet but dont tell her that) Can you believe when my roomie and I named her that, I had just a passing interest in the musical? we had her for like two years before I fell down the rabbit hole, here. For what it's worth her name was supposed to be Toast, but at the last minute we decided she was so cute fat squishy silly that she could only be a Beetlejuice. She responds to BJ and Beebleboose. My roommate's cat is Prince Detective Inspector Freckle McMurry. He's white and orange and he does not like me because once when he was a kitten i was holding him and a motorcycle drove down our street and he never forgave me for that. He goes by Freck, Prek, Preka Minky, Detective, Dat Boy, McMurry, McMurry's a Huge Piece of Shit, and Mac. He responds to none of these names, as he's too busy searching for clues to be bothered by the likes of us.
blue do you have a cat. tell me about your pets. blue!!! show me pet pics!!
#answered asks#bj has a tragic backstory.... when she was a kitten someone broke her tail. we were told. on purpose. to make her cute.#so it's short and has a weird bend to it. despite that she's everyones best friend#mac was a feral kitten for the first week of his life then got rescued with his whole litter by my bestie who just. rescues cats constantly#so even tho mac grew up in a warm house he likes to pretend he's still on the streets#he's always slinking around. that's why he's a noir detective#also yeah he is named after freckle lackadaisy... sort of.

yk. after talking so negatively about alberta as of recent i want to share some photos i’ve taken around here because at the end of the day, alberta is not only a beautiful province, it’s also my home. so!
these are from around banff and lake louise:

these directly from lake louise, of obviously of the lake, but also pictures i’ve taken in and around the area on some nearby hikes!

these are from johnston’s canyon, one one of the most famous hikes in the area. the second two are near the lower falls, but i’ve been to the upper falls once and it’s just as beautiful. the wiggly tree is just something fun about the hike! it’s been there since my mom was a kid, and even before that…

and this is a photo i took while riding probably the most popular gondola that has the banff springs hotel near the bottom!
now for a couple from canmore:

i really only have a couple photos from canmore because i don’t go there super often, but these are a few i really like! the third one is my favourite, that bridge is super cool tbh
moving onto jasper:

jasper was hit fairly recently with a lot of really awful wildfires, and since then i haven’t actually visited… but, the last time i did go, it was absolutely beautiful. the first two are photos of a hike you take a gondola to get up to, unfortunately i couldn’t finish them due to elevation sickness, but even from where i was the view was incredible. the last photo is of spirit island, which if i remember correctly, is an important place to the stoney nakoda first nation, because of their belief of mountains representing their ancestors (i really hope i got this right)
these are from abraham lake, and probably some of my dad’s favourite photos from a trip here!

these are methane bubbles frozen in ice on the lake, which is the main attraction of going in winter! it’s freezing cold, but absolutely worth it (trust me, seeing these in real life is really awesome)
these are a little closer to my home, there’s a small hike around the elbow river my family does just about every summer!

the first is the actual hike, and the second is an inukshuk i remember seeing someone make on the hike a couple years ago! (bonus story uh one time on this hike i. may or may not have stepped in a stream of water and had to finish the rest of the hike with a wet shoe 😔)
and then for some more “city/industry focused” photos, here are a few i have of both edmonton and fort mackay!
these are some places in edmonton:

(the art gallery of alberta, and a building near the university of alberta that is literally referred to as the butterdome)
and some photos from fort mackay!

a lot of these deal with the oil sands since, yk, it’s one of the places where all the hardcore oil drilling and stuff happens. the third photo, if i remember correctly, is actually a site where they’re working to clean up all the literal toxic sludge lol. i actually think my parents worked on it! and obviously i had to include some buffalo my family saw :)
and i don’t have a lot of photos from fort mcmurry unfortunately, so i’ll ask my parents to send me some, and i’ll edit the post to add them later!
and finally, it wouldn’t be a scott alberta appreciation post if i didn’t include my home city calgary :)

inside the university of calgary, a photo of peace bridge,

a photo of eau claire mall before it was demolished, a photo of bowmont park (if i remember correctly, a photo of the reservoir i actually think looks really cool with COP in the background (a place for skiing)),

and lastly for now, the northern lights just outside my home :)
there’s so much i didn’t include here: photos from kananaskis, downtown edmonton, the saddledome and the bow building in calgary, and so much of both red deer and fort mcmurray, which have all been a part of my life growing up in alberta. as much as i have complained about it here recently, it is my home, and at the end of the day, it’s a home that i love.
#i have so many other places i would love to include… the oil sands museum in fort mac… the royal alberta museum… even the calgary stampede…#bowness park… more of banff city… two jack lake… hell even more photos of downtown calgary. which i may even have more of soon…#alberta is a beautiful province and i hope that i haven’t given my followers a bad impression of it just based on politics#i’ve lived here my whole life. figured after so much negativity it was high time for an alberta appreciation post :)#also! i would encourage you to look up some of the things i’ve mentioned but don’t have a photo of. they’re all really cool!#shut up scott

thankkk youuu sooo much! I really loved the book you recommended, Cotton's Basic inorganic chemistry, and all the advice.
actually, I'm in high school but in my country, the syllabus is designed in such a way that we have to go in really deep(basically for the tough entrance exam) so everything you told from orbitals to CFT was relevant. so thank you<3
can you please suggest a book for ochem as well?
I have to cover everything from the nomenclature to haloalkanes and haloarenes, alcohols, phenols and ethers, amines, ketones, etc.
You're very welcome! Also, holy cow, what an ambitious approach to education 😳 In that case I think I can safely rec the textbooks I used during my ochem course in uni: Vollhardt & Schore's Organic Chemistry would be my first choice. For some reason I found it a little chaotic at first, but once I adjusted to its style I actually preferred it to the other course book. The explanations are very clear and comprehensive, there are step by step mechanisms, and these guys are like. Really dedicated to consistency lol for example the leaving group will be drawn in the same color throughout the whole textbook. I gotta appreciate that.
This other course book was McMurry's Organic Chemistry. It wasn't bad, but I thought sometimes it went way too deep for a basic ochem course. It really depends on the person though - some of my course mates liked this one better.
Good luck with everything! 🍀
