Mean and Scary | Chapter 2: Ghosts in the Pool
Pts: 1, 2, 3
=======
He had never really intended to tell anyone about the nightmares. The sleepless nights, the tossing and turning interrupted by the absolute worst headaches and the bloodstained pillows thanks to the newly developed nose bleed problem. It made him feel weak. Nobody else was having these problems. Maybe it was karma from his attempt to just forget Barb this first go-around, maybe the numerous head injuries had aligned to create a new way of making him miserable. But Max just looked so tired, and if anyone could relate in their little Party, maybe Steve could.
And apparently, Steve understood almost perfectly. Max had opened up to him too, and confessed that she only really felt sane when she was listening to music. She’d given him her old walkman, the one she used before she realized she needed an upgrade if it was going to become a constant in her life. It was bulky, and the headphones were small and uncomfortable, but the reprieve from his own thoughts was better than any drug.
Well, any drug Steve had tried. Hence the standing in the Munson trailer, waiting to expand his horrisions. It still felt weird to be here. Not the trailer park, or even the trailer itself, he’d seen it from the outside countless times to pick and drop Max off. But here, in Eddie Munson’s living room. Waiting for drugs. After the russians Steve was almost entirely sure he’d never be able to even get drunk again. It felt too similar, felt like he was back in that cold room surrounded by needles and bone-saws. But he needed something or else he’d never fall asleep again, and the two days he’d gone without were already kicking his ass.
Was it smart to go to Dustins newest brother figure in search of illicit substances? No. Was he going to do it anyways? Yes. He just needed some fucking sleep, just this once. (He knew that he couldn’t guarantee that. That if this worked, he’d probably be coming back time and time again. But he was never the sharpest bulb in the shed, and he’s choosing to blame his remarkable lack of decision making on the sleep deprivation.)
There were dozens of baseball caps and mugs covering the walls around him. From sports teams, to shitty diners, to T.V. memorobila, there was everything. He idly wondered if any of the items were ever used, considering they were high enough on the wall that he would need a ladder to access them, and Eddie was about his height.
“Sorry for the mess, maid took the week off.” Eddie was digging around the trailer, looking for whatever it was Steve had agreed to purchase and later on actually take (was he really doing this? Should he be doing this? God, Robin was gonna be so pissed if she ever found out)
“You um,” Steve swallowed, he honestly couldn’t tell you why he was so nervous. He felt like there were livewires where his blood vessels should be, “you live here alone?”
“With my uncle. But, uh, he works nights at the plant. Bringing home the big bucks.” There were various clunking and clicking sounds from where Eddie was opening up what was presumably any container he found in his junk drawer mixed in with the sounds of singing softly crooning from the tinny speakers in Steve’s headphones. His favorite song was playing, and he turned the volume up a little more.
“How long does it take?”
“Sorry?”
Steve took a deep breath to calm his nerves, seriously why was he so anxious? “The- the, uh, Special K? How long to kick in?”
“Oh, uh, well, it depends on if you snort it or not.” Christ, this was so dumb, “Uh, if you do, then, yeah. It'll kick in pretty quick.” This was so, so, dumb. “Ohhh…shit.”
“You’re sure you have it?” the part of Steve that had been desperately begging him to just go the fuck home was silently hoping that Munson just didn’t have any. The other part, the part that hadn’t slept in two days and had been getting pretty shit sleep for the last week and a half, was desperately begging that he did.
“No, no, I got it. Um, somewhere.” Eddie turned around and went into his room, most likely to continue his part in the hide and seek game he was playing with this illegal drug. Seriously, why wouldn’t you keep that somewhere safe?
Tick tock. Tick tock.
Steve whipped around to stare at the window, as the music played in the background to the sound of a clock chiming in the distance.
Tick tock. Tick tock.
Steve really hoped he wasn’t going crazy. That some total whackjob decided to put a grandfather clock in the backyard of their trailer for some reason. But he knew he was kidding himself, it was so clear. Like it was coming from down a long hallway. Except the only hallway in the trailer was to Eddie’s room, and the sound was coming from the opposite direction. All those knocks to the head were finally getting to him. He was officially going insane.
As he scanned the darkness outside the window, the ticking and the chiming just got louder, and louder, and louder, until it felt like it was coming from inside his head. He frantically closed the curtains.
“Eddie?” Steve called over his shoulder, “Did you find it? Eddie?”
Silence. Gone were the sounds of hollow metal opening and closing, or Eddie’s weird ramblings to nobody, or the sounds of another person’s footsteps on the carpet. Steve slowly started to walk down the hallway. Eddie probably wouldn’t want him to see his room, but after years of monsters and possession and all things Upside-Down, Steve would rather take the chance of upsetting him over the chance of anything else. Granted the Upside-Down and the beasts that came with it were not usually quiet, at least from this end of things, but Steve was paranoid. He thinks he’s earned that much for all the brain trauma he’s most definitely had over time.
“Eddie?” He entered the room, only to find that Eddie wasn’t there. In fact, this wasn’t even Eddie’s room. It couldn’t be. This was Steve’s porch. The pool shone a light-blue glow over the surroundings, steam misting off the surface of the water in lazy swirls. The air felt cool, but not cold. Like it always did right before it became too cold to swim even in heated water, right before the Harringtons had to close the pool up. There were empty beer cans littered in a small pile, each with a small jagged hole punched into the bottom, next to some pool chairs with an ashtray situated between them on a small table.
And there, sitting on the diving board of the pool, was Barbara Holland. Her back was facing Steve, but he would have to be blind not to recognize her. Her curly red hair made a dark brown in the low light but discernible all the same, the dark blue denim jacket she had been wearing that night, color swallowed up by the black night around her. Resting her hands on her legs, one cradling the other with blood running down her fingers. Dripping slowly into the water below, the dark red quickly fading into the surrounding blue with each new droplet.
“B-Barb?”
This couldn’t possibly be real. Barb was dead. Barb had died here, on this night, in his pool. She was the ghost over his shoulder, never remembered quite right, and not always at the forefront of his mind, but never really forgotten. She was a scar that would never heal, a guilt that would never fade. Even if he hadn’t ever really admitted it, he agreed with Nancy. What she had said that halloween. He killed Barb, he just didn’t really let himself think about it.
“Still pretending, Steve?” She said, still not looking back. Still swaying her legs casually, sitting at the foot of her grave.
“Still bullshit?” The word reverberated through the air. And even though there were no walls, it felt like it was closing in on him. She finally turned around, and where her brown eyes had once been were milky white pupils, surrounded by black. Water dribbled from her mouth as she spoke. Her face was rotting, water logged and bloated. She didn’t look like a ghost, she looked like a corpse. Slugs crawled out of holes in her skin, and vines wrapped around her legs and propelled her forwards, her muscles too decayed to stand without assistance
Steve turned around and booked it. He slammed the door to the pool closed, drawing the blinds over the panes of glass. Holding his back to the door, he turned around to see that where the Munson trailer had once been, the viney Upside-Down tunnels had replaced it.
The vines slithered over eachother, covering the door to the pool and creating a solid wall of plant matter. Chittering and screeching echoed down pathways, the smell of kerosine and the distinct iron-copper of blood filled the air and choked Steve’s lungs.
“You killed me!” The distorted voice of Barbara Holland filled his head, so loud it was deafening. Steve covered his ears. “If it wasn’t for you, I’d be alive! My parents wouldn’t had to bury an empty casket! It’s your fault Steve!”
Steve ran, trying desperately to get away from the voice, but it wasn’t coming from behind him. It was coming from around him, like a bubble of loathing and blame.
“Nancy lied to you Steve! There was no ‘we’. It was all you!” Barb laughed, empty and hollow, “you’ll never make up for it, murderer! One day, they’ll realize! One day, they’ll all know! And when that day comes, nobody will want to see your pathetic face ever. Again.”
There in the diverging pathways of the tunnels stood Dustin, and then Robin, then Max, and Lucas, and Mike, and Joyce, and it just went on, and on, and on. Their sneers, their disgust, their backs turned as they walked away from him.
“If you had just focused on someone other than yourself for one fucking second, I’d be alive. Nancy would be happy! Thank god Jonathan was there for her, to be what she really needed.”
“You just can’t help yourself, can you?” Barb kept going. She’d finally gotten her chance to say everything she didn’t when she was alive, and she seemed to be making the most of it. “Needed to win over perfect prissy Nancy Wheeler? Needed to prove to your douchebag friends that you could conquer any woman? That nobody could say no to King Steve!”
Steve would protest if he could breathe at all. He felt like he’d been running for days, and he was panting heavily from the strain.
“You’ll never be enough to make up for what the world lost when you took me from it.” Barb's voice sounded farther away, until finally it faded entirely.
Steve slumped down the wall, creepy vines and shit be damned. He couldn’t think, he couldn’t breathe, he just needed a second to get his bearings together and then he’d start looking for a way out.
“Steve”

Mizu, femininity, and fallen sparrows
In my last post about Mizu and Akemi, I feel like I came across as overly critical of Mizu given that Mizu is a woman who - in her own words - has to live as a man in order to go down the path of revenge.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If she is ever discovered to be female by the wrong person, she will not only be unable to complete her quest, but there's a good chance that she'll be arrested or killed.
So it makes complete sense for Mizu to distance herself as much as possible from any behavior that she feels like would make someone question her sex.
Tumblr media
I felt so indignant toward Mizu on my first couple watchthroughs for this moment. Why couldn't Mizu bribe the woman and her child's way into the city too? If Mizu is presenting as a man, couldn't she claim to be the woman's escort?
Tumblr media
However, this moment makes things pretty clear. Mizu knows all too well the plight of women in her society. She knows it so well that she cannot risk ever finding herself back in their position again. She helps in what little way she can - without drawing attention to herself.
Mizu is not a hero and she is not one to make of herself a martyr - she will not set herself on fire to keep others warm. There's room to argue that Mizu shouldn't prioritize her quest over people's lives, but given the collateral damage Mizu can live with in almost every episode of season 1, Mizu is simply not operating under that kind of morality at this point. ("You don't know what I've done to reach you," Mizu tells Fowler.)
And while I still feel like Mizu has an obvious and established blind spot when it comes to Akemi because of their differences in station, such that Mizu's judgment of Akemi and actions in episode 5 are the result of prejudice rather than the result of Mizu's caution, I also want to establish that Mizu is just as caged as Akemi is, despite her technically having more freedom while living as a man.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mizu can hide her mixed race identity some of the time, and she can hide her sex almost all of the time, but being able to operate outside of her society's strict rules for women does not mean she cannot see their plight.
It does not mean she doesn't hurt for them.
Back to Mizu and collateral damage, remember that sparrow?
Tumblr media
While Mizu is breaking into Boss Hamata's manse, she gets startled by a bird and kills it on reflex. She then cradles it in her hands - much more tenderly than we've seen Mizu treat almost anything up to this point in the season:
Tumblr media
She then puts it in its nest, with its unhatched eggs. Almost like she's trying to make the death look natural. Or like an accident.
Tumblr media
You see where I'm going with this.
When Mizu kills Kinuyo, Mizu lingers in the moment, holding the body tenderly:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And btw a lot of stuff about this show hit me hard, but this remains the biggest gut punch of them all for me, Mizu holding that poor girl's body close, GOD
When Mizu arranges the "scene of the crime," Kinuyo's body is delicate, birdlike. And Mizu is so shaken afterward that she gets sloppy. She's horrified at this kill to the point that she can't bring herself to take another innocent life - the boy who rats her out.
Tumblr media
MIZU'S ONE MOMENT OF SOFTNESS AND MERCY, COMING ON THE HEELS OF HER NEEDING TO KILL A GIRL TO SPARE HER THE WORST FATE THAT THIS RIGID SOCIETY HAS TO OFFER WOMEN, AND TO SPARE A BROTHEL FULL OF INNOCENT WOMEN WHO ARE THE CASTOFFS OF SOCIETY, NEARLY RESULTS IN ALL OF THEIR DEATHS
No wonder Mizu is as stoic and cold as she is.
And no wonder Mizu has no patience for Akemi whatsoever right before the terrible reveal and the fight breaks out:
Tumblr media
Speaking of Akemi - guess who else is compared to a bird!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The plumage is more colorful, a bit flashier. But a bird is a bird.
And, uh
Tumblr media
Yeah.
I like to think that Mizu killing the sparrow is not only foreshadowing for what she must do to Kinuyo, but is also a representation of the choice she makes on Akemi's behalf. She decides to cage the bird because she believes the bird is "better off." Better off caged than... dead.
But because Mizu doesn't know Akemi or her situation, she of course doesn't realize that the bird is fated to die if it is caged and sent back home.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mizu is clearly not happy, or pleased, or satisfied by allowing Akemi to be dragged back to her father:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But softness and mercy haven't gotten Mizu anywhere good, recently.
There is so much tragedy layered into Mizu's character, and it includes the things she has to witness and the choices she makes - or believes she has to make - involving women, when she herself can skirt around a lot of what her society throws at women. Although, I do believe that it comes at the cost of a part of Mizu's soul.
After all, I'm gonna be haunted for the rest of this show by Mizu's very first prayer in episode 1:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"LET" her die. Because as Ringo points out, she doesn't "know how" to die.
Kind of like another bird in this show:

i love the (slightly cracky) premise that the newer batkids like duke who weren't around during jason's genuine "i hate the batfam" era would sometimes forget that it even happened so there'd be times where it would go:
Tim: where are you going
Jason: got a call from a friend in the alley, some fuckers need bullets in their knees. tell B and i'll kill you
Tim: no you won't
Jason: i dunno, i almost did it twice, third time's the charm
Tim: boooo you'll have to try harder
Jason, flipping him off as he leaves: watch your back, timmers!
Duke, who was sitting next to Tim the whole time: ??? he almost did it twice???? i thought he's joking when he says that????
Tim: oh, he is joking whenever he says that now. try a few years ago and it wouldn't have been as much of a joke
Duke: ???????????
Tim, snorting: i'd like to see him try again, anyway. once you realise that spends 80% of his free time in the local library he becomes no better than a nerdy loser who happens to be a bit dangerous
Duke: DUDE
Tim: what? do you find jason scary?
Duke: not usually but DUDE?!?!?

would love a scene of someone who doesn’t take percy or his physical strength seriously and then getting their shit rocked. imagine them getting percy all worked up and pissed off, and then smiling and taunting him; “what, you wanna hit me big guy? go ahead.” and then percy punching them, which throws them like 10 feet back, breaks their nose, and fully dislocates their jaw. because they didn’t realize that percy is actually extremely strong (which is canon)
but alas, none of that will ever happen because percy isn’t allowed to be impressive or intimidating anymore

Mean and Scary | Chapter 3: Waking Nightmares
AO3 Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/48053206/chapters/122370565
Pts: 1, 2, 3
———
Eddie riffles through drawer after drawer, filling the silence with mindless babble until finally, finally, he finds his prize. “Gotcha”
“Found it!” He skips back into the living room, shaking out the baggie as he goes. “Peaceful bliss just moments away.”
He slows to a stop in the kitchen, “Steve?”
Steve’s standing there with his arms to his side. His eyes are pure white. He’s not moving, he might not even be breathing.
“Steve? Hello?” Eddie waves his hand around, too far away to wave it directly in front of his face, but Steve’s eyes don’t track the movement. Probably because they wouldn’t be able to see him.
“Steve!” Eddie jumps forward a bit before bouncing back, trying to spook Steve. Steve doesn’t flinch, he doesn’t move at all. At first Eddie thinks he might be having a seizure, but he knows this isn’t what seizures look like. Or at least, not to his knowledge. Steve isn’t convulsing, and he’s standing upright.
“Hey, Steve, wake up. Hey, hello? Steve! Hello?” He drops the slightly humorous lilt to his voice, and he steps forward to snap his fingers in front of Steve’s face. Nothing. Again. Steve’s eyelids are fluttering, and his eyes are rolled into the back of his head. Eddie can see the slightest sliver of brown irises.
“Hey, Steve-” he’s waving his hand in front of Steve’s face when suddenly all the lights in the trailer start to flicker and buzz. It’s louder than any electricity problem Eddie’s ever had, and the lights all seem to dim and brighten sporadically, never fully darkening. “What the fuck?”
“Harrington! If this is some stupid prank, I swear- dude seriously, cut it out!” He knew it wasn’t a joke, it couldn’t possibly be a joke. Steve had been seriously out of it in the woods, he looked tired and withered. He was pale and thinner than Eddie remembered. He was reminiscent of a coma patient, with the empty way his eyes seemed to gloss over everything, never really focusing for more than a few seconds at a time. Unless Steve was a damn good actor, this was real.
“Time to wake up! Hello? Can you hear me? Wake up, Steve! Steve, wake up! I don’t like this, Steve! Wake up!” He starts patting Steve on the shoulders, shaking him a bit. Steve doesn’t move. There’s resistance to being jostled, like all of Steve’s muscles are tensed, but his face is totally lax.
“What’s wrong with you?! Just wake up!” Eddie shouts, he has no idea what’s happening, and how it could possibly fuck with the trailer lights. Medical issues don’t tend to cause problems with wiring or lightbulbs.
“Steve-” He tries to pat down Steve’s shoulders again when he realizes Steve seems to be getting taller. He looks down to see Steve’s feet hovering a few inches off the ground and steadily rising. He jolts backwards.
“What-” Steve suddenly rockets upwards, stuck against the roof of the trailer like a pinned butterfly.
“Jesus christ!” Eddie trips over a chair in his haste to get away from whatever exorcist bullshit is happening right now, when Steve just drops to the floor. Steve just barely catches himself from braining it on the trailer floor, and he scrambles backwards till his head hits the wall behind him. Steve’s eyes are flickering around the trailer, just like they did in the woods, not looking at anything.
“Steve! Oh my god, what the fuck just happened? Are- are you okay? What was that?” Eddie pants, but Steve doesn’t respond. His eyes finally focus, and when Eddie turns to follow his gaze he sees Steve rush into his bedroom. Steve’s clutching the doorframe so hard his knuckles are white.
Eddie gets up off the floor and follows Steve. He’s shaking badly, his hands are unsteady and he feels like he’s walking on a frozen lake. As if one wrong step could crack the ice and send him plummeting into cold dark depths. “Steve? Seriously man, you’re freaking me out. Again.”
Steve slumps to the floor. He clutches at his hair and hides his face in his hands. He seems rattled too. He’s even paler now than he was when he got here, a ghost white that suggests a hospital visit might be in order. “That wasn’t- you- what just happened?”
“I- you- you don’t remember?” Eddie chokes out. He has no idea what it feels like to float, but he assumes it’s a memorable feeling. If Eddie suddenly lost contact with gravity, he’s pretty sure he would notice.
Steve lifts his head up and looks to the side, facing Eddie’s room. Not quite seeing again, but it’s not the vacant stare it was before, it’s more like he’s seeing something else. “Not exactly…” Steve’s still breathing heavily, and he’s shaking worse than Eddie is.
“You started- you floated, Harrington. Like actual feet off the ground levitation. Your eyes were rolled into the back of your head and- and you wouldn’t snap out of it.” Eddie’s never going to forget that. It was the scariest moment of his goddamn life, and he’s going to figure out what caused it if it’s the last thing he does. “Seriously, what is going on! The lights started-”
“Wait, stop!” Steve’s focus snapped to Eddie, staring him down with terrified eyes. “The lights flickered?” he asks in a small voice.
“I- yeah but that’s not the detail to focus on here! Why were you floating?!” Eddie yells. He admits that the lights were weird, but they were certainly not the weirdest part of this evening. Who knows, maybe it was a coincidence? (It wasn’t. He knows that he wasn’t. Something deep down tells him that the lights were important, whether it’s instinct or the horrified look on Steve’s face, he doesn’t know.)
“We- I need to go.” Steve springs up and starts to make his way towards the trailer door, but Eddie steps in front of him blocking his path.
“No you don’t! You need to explain what just happened. Why are you so freaked out? What do you know?” Eddie rushes out. He’s not letting Steve just waltz out of here and leave Eddie to deal with an existential crisis alone. Whatever Harrington knows, he’s going to tell Eddie.
Steve stares at him and presses his lips together in a thin line. He seems to be having an internal debate with himself, eyes boring holes into Eddie’s, before he takes a deep breath and shoulders past with a muttered, “Follow me, we need to talk to some people.”

Oof dear @avatar94 thank you for noticing my list of children.
They're all in timeout lol.
Seeing the like on this post from ages past (what a year?) Reminds me I have a good omens wip too.

Are all of these still wips?
Yes.
Do I still plan to finish them?
Yes.
At some point.
I have them mentally outlined of what happens and how they finish.
Buuuut as for getting the thoughts out.... not yet.
A big bunch of love to everyone who has read and is being patient with all of these.
I get a spare comment on my good omens fic from at least 3 or 4 years ago and it makes me happy that everyone Is so nice when I tell them I will eventually finish but it might not be soon.

Ok, but like, what if there was an AU where Stan died when Ford shot him with the memory gun. Maybe deleting his entire mind caused fatal brain damage and he died. But he still doesn't remember anything. His spirit has no memory of who he is or about anything. So the Axolotl picked him up, a brave and lost soul, and made him the spirit guardian of Gravity Falls, making sure he keeps evil away from the town. For some reason he's very attached to that cabin just outside of the small town and the people and the kids who regularly go there, especially to the old man who looks almost exactly like him, save from the extra fingers.
Maybe the Mystery Shack still runs under Soos' care, because that's something Stan worked for his whole life. Closing it and basically ruining everything Stan worked for for 30 years... Didn't sit right with anyone. Maybe Ford goes on boat sailing alone, on the Stan o' War II, as a way of honoring Stan and their equally dead dream to sail the world together. That's why everything happened in the first place, didn't it? The kids when they go back home have to explain to their family, to their parents and grandpa Shermie, that "Grunkle Stan had a stroke and died" (this came out funnier than intended).
Maybe next summer happens. To spend time together and create happy memories. Because that's what Stan would want. They all go to visit Stan's grave, and Stan stares at them. Because he knows them, he knows he knows them, but he can't remember how or when.
Anyway, @babyblankyerror I think you'll like it. :)
