I think, in some ways, the way we measure stuff here in england can be worse than the USA because why does it suddenly go from metres to yards when you get in a car, why does this recipie measure solids in ounces and liquids in millilitres. I accidentily descibed the length of something in inches yesterday. This is the fault of nobody but ourselves. I hate this.

cause you've got 1 mm, 1 cm (which is 10 mm), a meter, which is 1000 mm or 100 cm, or 10 dm, then you've got a kilometer, which is, get this, 1000 m~~~

0 is freezing temp of water and 100 is boiling~~ not this 32-212 nonsense~~~

miligrams, grams, kilograms are easy to swap between~~ just move the decimal point~~

and the 24 hour clock omits the redundancy that is AM/PM nonsense~~~ as well as the dd/mm/yyyy date format making more sense cause the smaller number (days) comes before the larger ones~~

you all should've swapped to the metric system decades ago~~~

Think of it in terms of cooking; with the advent of internet recipes making it easy for me to get tantalizing recipes from metric regions, I embarked on… the process of acquiring the measuring devices necessary to make them. This wasn’t punishingly expensive or difficult, but it was non trivial.

Changing away from English measurements entirely in my kitchen would require rewriting every single recipe I already have thought, and I would inevitably end up with a lot of awkward amounts and risking errors. If I move internationally, I will bring or buy English measurement equipment because realistically trying to make a recipe written in one measuring system using equipment from another system is just not worth it, and I will continue to make some of my favorite recipes abroad.

So the thing with the US's awful units is like

So, my mom worked at NASA for some time before I was born and I asked her about the American use of US customary units when I heard about the Mars Climate Orbiter's crash.

And what she told me — which was surely a simplification somehow, I was a child at the time — was that periodically, someone would push for this within NASA, and then they would do a study to explore the possibility of forcing them and all the various contractors to use metric, and they would come up with a number which was the cost of doing that and replacing all the non-metric tooling, and then they would shelve the proposal.

So, my point is: before that I thought of the unit thing as like an American culture thing. Like Americans are set in their ways and conservative and arrogant, or whatever. After that, I thought of the unit thing as a state capacity thing. Americans simply can't do a lot of stuff, and when they can't, they puff themselves up defensively, like what they're forced to do is the best way to do things anyways.

Think about it: If a kid is trying to measure their mood or love with their arms, saying "I love you this much" or "more than this much" it's an actual unit of measurement! If someone says "my love for you is unfathomable" they're saying "my love for you is more than which an embrace can convey." Sailors literally talk by saying "yeah this square knot takes about six hugs of rope" The words "fathom" "unfathomable" "fathomless" all relate to hugs! We have been measuring length in hugs for 5 centuries! I think that's beautiful.

Yqy freaks the fuck out, assuming that he did something wrong during sex and retraumatized sj. Mu Qingfang is basically having to babysit yqy so he doesn’t kill himself when no one’s looking. They whole sect is dispatched to track down sj. The one who finds him is actually Qi Qingqi. She finds him months into the search, hiding in a barn, obviously pregnant. She has to do a factory reset, and actually reevaluates her thoughts on sj, and assumes the only reason his reaction would be so extreme is if yqy assaulted him. She drags him back to her peak, and is about ready to skin yqy alive. Yqy gets to sj anyway, tells him about Xuan Su and the caves and asks him to draw it for as long as he thinks yqy’s life should be cut short, or even just kill him. Sj realizes a number of misunderstandings, and they can finally actually stop trying to kill themselves. Then sj gets a very late term abortion to keep in the woodshed for future tormenting orphans, and gets repregnant so that yqy has to take care of him the whole way through it.

Opinion I have that I don't see anyone else say:

I think prisoners should be allowed there smart phones and Internet access

I'm against prisons as an institution and it's barbaric that there is such a limited communication you can have with the outside world, dehumanizing people by making them unaware of what's going on in the world

The ability to look up information, see the news, learn about current events, watch pornography, keep up with cultural ideas, communicate with your loved ones, be available for your kid to call whenever, advocate for yourself publicly, and any entertainment are all things I think are important to all humans and should not be restricted

The next time someone outside the US tries to Give Shit about not using metric, I'll just ask when they're transitioning out of a base 24/60 time measurement.

No you would not get to retroactively grow up with the time. Your people and government would have to manually adjust as fast as possible because... IDK aliens showed up and the rest of the galaxy thinks we're weird for not using base 10. The boomers will complain, the teachers will panic, and you will have to sink so much money into changeover for signage and computers across the world.

EDIT: I am FULLY AWARE of the transition from imperial to metric in places like England (incomplete though it may be).

This is not about people who lived through that transition, because those are not generally the people who are snobbish about it. The worst attitudes, in my experience, come from people who grew up on metric and view others as idiots for preferring something else.

The post is about how the argument that metric is Objectively Better is hypocritical if you aren't also willing to change the time system.
