October: White Redux

Hmm, black spots creeping into our white costumes again? Strange....

This costume, nice as it is, baffles me. It's a fine example of fashion from the 1300s, worn for a scene (the death of King Edward IV) that takes place in 1483. See the picture below: Jane Shore in the red and blue dress shows an example of what women were actually wearing at the time (see here for a more detailed look at that costume). The queen even wears other costumes more along those lines in other scenes. So why on earth did they choose to put her in clothing that was a hundred years or more out of date for the first part of the film? I would love to know the answer.

She's not the only one, either--one of the photos shows her walking with the Duchess of York (Helen Haye, in black), who is wearing a gown of a similar era but almost a perfect palette-swap of the queen's costume.

I think the times I feel The Most Like A Medieval Person is when I’m getting out of my dress and I look EXACTLY like every manuscript drawing of a woman getting out of a dress. Like yes my bestie from 700 years ago it really do be like that

Helaena Targaryen

From what I gather from the show and the wiki's Helaena is one of the characters that fate just loves to sucker punch. My understanding is that she is sort of like a Cassandra parallel. Gifted with some prophecy, doomed in that all her warnings are ignored. So I feel for her quite a bit and wanted to capture that.... "madness" in futility? in her costume design. Her gown closely matches the style of her mother, but the colors are all washed out and almost sickly-looking. Her hair is unbound and unadorned. I suppose she should feel almost like a living ghost, or a Crimson Peak reference.

Return of the Ren Faire! The big pearl beads are like something out of The Court Jester, but at least that movie had the excuse of not even pretending to be period-accurate.

I really do love this movie's costumes out of all proportion to what they frankly deserve. I guess I was just at an impressionable age when i saw this movie/miniseries. Plus, it's just so obvious that the costumers are doing their best on what must have been a miniscule budget, bless their hearts. I just want to hug them and pat them on their heads.

I'm thinking of continuing, if there will be designs that suit her, regardless of whether they will be consistent or not. I thought, of course, about the possibility of creating some outfits/illustrations with these moments. The only difference would be the fact that I have to do some research, to see if there are descriptions of her outfits on these two occasions, since the designs I have made so far have been purely fictional, even if the elements were inspired by manuscripts more or less contemporary. If there are descriptions, I would like to use the details in the process of creating the outfits. If not, I will improvise, as I have done so far, haha.

Whatever it turns out to be, I'll be excited to work on the designs when the opportunity arises!!
