sometimes im like ‘hmm is canon merthur a bit one sided? I mean its clear how much merlin cares for arthur but-‘ and then I remember arthurs KING/ROYALTY. This is his manservant. He’s also married/in love for a lot of the show. He also had a huge army some of which are close friends. And yet he canonly goes out of his way to spend the most time with merlin, tells all his secrets to merlin, completely unquestionably trusts merlin and aside from being the most oblivious blonde planet earth has ever seen, he still knows how to read merlins emotions and when hes acting different, something he cant do as easily with others. A guy who is supposed to just wash his clothes, clean his armour and bring him food. And yet arthur tries to always make sure merlins ok. Again sure captain blind to the obvious sometimes misses things, but when he sees it he actively tries to fix it.

I remember how merlin isnt supposed to do half the stuff he does in the show, but he does it because he wants to protect arthur and he cares for him sure, but arthur LETS HIM. Arthur wants merlin to go on all these journeys. The amount of places he goes and takes only merlin, no knights, no wife, nothing. Just merlin. He wants merlin around that much that the quests he cant tell him about he doesnt, but he still takes him because he wants merlin there.

Arthur while DYING asks where merlin has been when he wakes up and sees him, even though merlin had told him before camlan why he couldnt go (lie sure but we move). Arthur wanted merlin. Arthur doesnt mean ‘where have you been? What was you doing that meant you couldnt come?’ He means ‘im hurt and this is the first time in ten years that you wasnt there, Where have you been? Why wasnt you quicker because I knew you was coming but what took you so long?’ And that really just makes my bones melt.

one thing I really respect the merlin writers for is that they actually put in the effort to build up the arthur/gwen romance. there was actual development there. their relationship wasn't just written for the sake of having a romance on screen.

not to be annoying about them for the millionth time but this dispair is too much for me to carry on my own

Just imagining Merlin having an ever-growing collection of anything that reminds him of Arthur over the many hundreds of years he's had to wait. Paintings, sculptures, books, pottery, clothing, goblets, just fucking anything, he hoards in his grief in the hope of satiating his misery (it doesn't work). "This made me think of you" but he's talking to air, waiting for the other half of his coin to return and no matter how much time passes it doesn't hurt any less. And he isn't patient, he is just made to wait, surrounding himself with anything to remind him of who he's waiting for.
