Opening Line Patterns
thanks for the tag @ladyofthenoodle!
Rules: List the first line of your last 10 posted fics and see if there's a pattern. I'm not going to link each individual fic, but here's my Ao3 if something catches your fancy! :)
From most to least recent:
Rena Rouge: Secret Keeper - Ch 4 Chat Noir was earlier than Ladybug. That was hardly unusual. What was unusual was that he was dreading her arrival.
The Untold Story of DJWiFi - Ch 9 Alya’s biggest complaint about being tied up in a giant spider’s web was that she couldn’t film the whole akuma encounter.
Bend the World Around It - Ch 3 They don’t talk about their names and identities. He doesn’t ask and she doesn’t want to talk about it anyway. It’ll just make them both sad.
Not Part of the Plan - Ch 12 She wakes up next to Adrien. He looks as gorgeous as ever and more than anything she wants to throw herself at him and have her way with him.
Celebrity Status - Ch 7 I can’t believe Ladybug dropped someone!
Miraculous Reveal #15 - Rings True I figured out who Monarch is. He’s Gabriel Agreste. Meet me at the Agreste Mansion.
Right Behind You - Ch 13 Nino adjusted the headphones over his ears, and hit play again, listening to the track he had so far.
Yin and Yang - Ch 5 Adrien’s room was something out of a child’s fantasy.
Spin the Bottle Nathaniel’s family home is not as large or ostentatious as the Agreste family manor, but that only means Adrien feels more at ease.
Aftermath - Ch 5 After their unplanned disaster sleepover, Marinette and Adrien fell strictly back into their routine.
Well, in 6/10 the first line seems to serve to establish where the character is more than anything else. Nothing too fancy about those.
And in 5/10 (with some definite overlap with the previous six) there's something in there to quickly establish the character's mood/mental space.
In 2/10 it's a line of text! I think this is interesting in that it's similar to starting with a line of dialogue, which is very easy for me, but I've mostly trained myself out of that. Mostly! Haha! But apparently I can still find ways to cheat. I'm actually shocked that none of these are an ACTUAL line of dialogue. I'm sure that it will happen again.
I don't usually put a lot of energy into the opening line. I more try to get into a character's head and that often takes more than one line and I usually find the rhythm later. The first line is helpful for getting in that mood though and getting words to flow!

the thing that sucks about metacognition is that you can recognize when you're buying into your own bullshit but still choose to do it because it feels narratively correct

How you so creative (genuine question because all your art is so wonderful and you dont seem to be afraid of expressing ideas)
(╥ᆺ╥) tht's so sweet of youuu.... gwuhhh aauhhh i've never thought of it before... i listen to a lot of music, and some of my favorite pieces have been just how those songs made me feel in my head. once or twice i've had funky dreams and woken up at like 4am to draw them >w>;;; BUT uhm uhm. uhm. another part of it also is. i think i just would rather be in a different body if i could, and when i draw i can be a billion different things in a billion different ways. this is a really nice little group of followers, i know nobody's going to be mad at me if i post art they don't like or if i don't post any art at all for a while, and if they are then,,, that's unfortunate lol i make art Just For Me. everyone needs some creative outlet that's Just For Them, cause ur creations will outlive you when you're gone ^_^

Yall need to look at this article lol...
Me and my partner were losing our minds over how this article was written about fake news as it regards to democrats vs republicans. who shares it more, who has a harder time telling the difference & discerning what's true, etc.
I feel like most of us know the "fake news" MAJORITY is coming from conservatives. But somehow, this article was reporting republicans as having "higher cognitive efficiency than democrats"? Even though BY THEIR OWN REPORTS, democrats were more accurate in determining real from fake news.
In discussion we wondered why they'd use the measurement of "metacognitive efficiency" when really what they're looking for should be their accuracy?
Because what they found was REPUBLICANS KNOW THEYRE WORSE AT IT. They admit that through the prior assessments lol. They say oh no, I know I can't tell the difference & favor republican headlines.
And because of that they were rated with a higher metacognitive efficiency score because...they knew they did bad, and then did bad lol??? We knew that had to be some kind of disingenuous ploy to make republicans look better.
As the note says...when we thought about it, and by chance mentioned "yknow it's like there's a dissonance..." we said oh my god. That's it lmao.
These people intentionally used this backwards measurement, which is a reverse of cognitive dissonance, in an attempt to make the playing field look either even or very close. (That's another thing...they use phrases throughout the WHOLE PAPER that say "dems and reps performed about the same" and then give figures that say the EXACT opposite).
This is just so wild. I need to know other people's response to this lmao.
Oh, and it's from Yale! Home of rich dumbasses and untrustworthy work. Who would've thought.

The Philosophy of Curiosity
The philosophy of curiosity explores the nature, origins, and implications of human curiosity, which drives individuals to seek knowledge, explore new experiences, and ask questions about the world around them. Curiosity has long been recognized as a fundamental aspect of human cognition and behavior, playing a central role in scientific inquiry, philosophical reflection, and everyday life. Here are some key aspects and theories within the philosophy of curiosity:
Epistemic Curiosity: Epistemic curiosity refers to the desire for knowledge and understanding, motivating individuals to seek information, explore new ideas, and engage in intellectual pursuits. Philosophers have debated the nature of epistemic curiosity, its origins in human cognition, and its role in shaping scientific progress and cultural development.
Aesthetic Curiosity: Aesthetic curiosity pertains to the exploration of beauty, art, and creativity, driving individuals to seek out new experiences, appreciate diverse forms of expression, and engage with works of literature, music, visual art, and other cultural artifacts. Aesthetic curiosity raises questions about the nature of artistic inspiration, cultural interpretation, and subjective experience.
Existential Curiosity: Existential curiosity concerns the exploration of existential questions about the nature of existence, meaning, and purpose, motivating individuals to reflect on their own lives, values, and beliefs. Existential curiosity encompasses inquiries into topics such as the nature of consciousness, the search for transcendence, and the quest for personal fulfillment.
Philosophical Curiosity: Philosophical curiosity involves the pursuit of philosophical inquiry, critical thinking, and self-reflection, prompting individuals to question assumptions, challenge conventional wisdom, and explore fundamental concepts such as truth, morality, justice, and reality. Philosophical curiosity underlies the practice of philosophy as a discipline and informs broader intellectual endeavors.
Ethical Curiosity: Ethical curiosity concerns the exploration of ethical questions and moral dilemmas, motivating individuals to consider the consequences of their actions, empathize with others, and strive for moral growth and development. Ethical curiosity raises questions about the nature of moral values, ethical principles, and the pursuit of the good life.
Cognitive Curiosity: Cognitive curiosity encompasses the exploration of cognitive processes, mental states, and psychological phenomena, driving individuals to understand how the mind works, how knowledge is acquired, and how beliefs are formed. Cognitive curiosity informs research in fields such as psychology, neuroscience, and cognitive science.
Cultural Curiosity: Cultural curiosity involves the exploration of diverse cultures, traditions, and worldviews, prompting individuals to learn about different societies, languages, and customs, and to appreciate the richness of human diversity. Cultural curiosity fosters intercultural understanding, global awareness, and cross-cultural communication.
Metacognitive Curiosity: Metacognitive curiosity pertains to the exploration of one's own cognitive processes and learning strategies, motivating individuals to reflect on their own thinking, monitor their own understanding, and adapt their learning strategies to achieve greater intellectual growth and self-improvement.
Overall, the philosophy of curiosity explores the multifaceted nature of human curiosity and its profound influence on knowledge, creativity, personal growth, and the human condition.

12 Days of Poetrymas, Day 7
Sorry for day 6 being late, I’ve been in a funk and I couldn’t get anything down until I sat down this morning. So two in one day!
This is an original by me, DEIG, I hope you enjoy
Signs and Signals in Boxes
“Beautiful things come to those who wait”
“Patience is a virtue”
These are the signs and signals we are taught from our youth
But then again, aren’t we also taught to fight the systems that keep us captive?
“Fight against the patriarchy”
“Eat the rich”
We live in contradictions
I grew up in a society that expected too many things
Yet told me that I deserved nothing and everything
Who was I to listen to?
I owed everyone everything
Yet I was owed nothing at all
So I grew up in a mess of thoughts
Vines choking the airways
Neurons tangled in chains
Trapped by the box I never knew was around me
But here’s the kicker
You ready?
I owe nothing to anyone
The only box I have?
The one I willingly embrace
Here’s the other thing they don’t tell you
Any label, any designation, regardless of self-identification or through the placement of others?
It’s all just a box.
Congratulations.
You fell into the trap.
They won.
We lost.

uuuuugh obviously any changes you make to a character regarding gender is gonna be surface level genuinely what meaningful difference exists between a man and woman and cis and trans that can be conveyed without a full itinerary of their entire life journey attached to any damn drawing obviously you could never be the same person you are when your life experience and identity is so drastically different but then what even is the point of changing anyone's gender ever

That post about guilt and shame only being effective as deterrents but not in inspiring anyone to change their behavior in any meaningful way got me thinking about those other posts about progressive circles consisting way too much of people not with a desire to do something right but instead with a fear of doing something wrong, and...
Yeah. Those two are related. Guilt and shame are the weapons of the status quo, designed to instill in everyone with a conscience a fear of failure, of hurting others, of being a bad person. And it's pretty fucked up when people are being shamed for that, since, well, shame doesn't inspire any meaningful change. So the problem persists, deepens, even. Since by shaming someone for not getting over that shame, you've now discouraged them from thinking about that instilled shame and maybe finding a solution.
It's shame and guilt all the way down. Perhaps shame and guilt could be used against people who tend to shame and guilt others in order to shame and guilt them out of shaming and guilting others? I don't know. And that's a true shame.
#random thought of the day#shame#guilt#toxic guilt#yeah it's a pickle#i kinda feel this way of thinking is deeply ingrained in the modern hyperindividualistic worldview#which ignores everything we know about humans as a social species shaped by our social circumstances#in favor of this very catholic guilt inspired 'stop being naughty' mindset that whips people into obedience never into self-actualization#as i wrote in the tags of the other post frustration is one of the most dangerous feelings since shaming and guilting starts there#if you look at the world around you and think you see the problem and the solution but others won't listen to you#it's natural to feel frustrated#the desire to shame and guilt others in a twisted way try to make them spring into action seems like a natural response#but it's stupid and wrong#shame and guilt are primarily ways to make yourself feel good in the moment to stroke that sense of superiority#i look back at how i was raised and i understand that a lot of the hesitancy and self-doubt and other paralyzing feelings are guilt#if you were raised to always doubt yourself always assume that you're in the wrong always take others at their word#you were raised to be a perfect victim#it's really hard to push through that and the metacognitive capabilities one must have to monitor all of that are staggering#meanwhile people who were raised through inspiration and motivation can be immune to guilt and shame#so what are we even doing here why is it so easy to fall back on a method that at best has little effect at worst increases the problems#there is a lot to say about this and i wish i had an answer but alas

So! We started with Question 1, regarding whether the respondents could "hear" a mental voice:
Tumblr media
We now have the results of Question 2, where I asked those who responded 'yes' -- or whoever would've said 'yes' if they'd seen the poll in time -- this follow-up question:
Tumblr media
What's fascinating about the above results is that the mobile app doesn't show decimals, but the desktop app does-- so, more precisely, the results look like this:
No particular location = 27.6% Near the front = 27.6% Near the back = 7% To the left/right = 3.9% Near the base = 2.8% Absolute center = 22.2% I don't understand = 3.7% Other/Clicky = 5.2%
There were locations given in the tags, replies, and reblogs that I had either forgotten to include or hadn't considered, including:
Near the top of the head;
Near/next to/inside/through/between ears;
Near/inside mouth;
Behind eyes;
Behind nose or inside sinuses;
Near/above/down throat (nasal cavities specifically mentioned more than once); and
Outside the body entirely (in front of body, perched above/on/around/behind head, disconnected entirely).
It should be noted that the majority of these had more than one respondent describe it as such.
Other responses not listed in the poll but clarified in tags or replies were:
not one but multiple mental voices that would either switch out in the same location, or "lived" in different locations (some of these respondents identified as having DID, but not all; some described different voices for different "uses", such as reading versus mental narration versus music-loops, etc.);
mental voices that had spatial locations but no fixed point (that is, would apparently move at random); and
mental voices that had spatial locations that could be chosen at will by the respondent.
...And it's that last group of people who managed to anticipate question 3, which is getting close to the actual thing I want to ask everybody...
Feel free to answer even if you didn't fill in the previous poll. If you already know that it'd hurt you to try (that is, option 5) -- or are concerned it might -- don't fuckin' do it omg, these questions are not IRB approved, no tumblr poll is worth a migraine.

( Meta cognitive therapy. lesson no. 1 ) :
Hello everyone, I’ve recently started meta cognitive therapy and it’s very nice when you’re trying to cope with anxiety, ocd, neurodiverse disorders, etc. I wanted to share some of the things my guide teaches me during sessions
Quick fact:
There’s about 60-70k thoughts rushing through your head now the daily. These are all randomly composed thoughts you may not even catch because they’re just zooming by!
We can imagine that out of those 60-70k thoughts that flow through our minds, there’s so, so much we can catch onto throughout the 24 hours. On days where we are more vulnerable or susceptible to anxiety or low-energy negative days. We catch on to the bad thoughts that trigger our amygdala to release fear and stress hormones.
Thoughts are neutral. There are no bad or good thoughts, they are thoughts we perceive whether are bad or good. The thoughts of trauma that impacts our lives often leads us to believe our mind is against us. But it is rather the thoughts get triggered, and our fear hormones are released, because we recognise the hurt. Our amygdala can’t tell whether we are truly back where we were hurt most or whether we’re someone else, somewhere new and in the present.
I learnt that because my thoughts were neutral, it is easier to see the good and the bad in what drifts around in my mind, and tell myself, they’re just neutral.
What did I learn?
When you’re stuck in your anxiety and thoughts, you must get out of your mind. But how do we do that?
How do we tell our brains that what thoughts are passing through, aren’t important? How do we convince our amygdala, and ourselves, that the inner turmoil we face often, is only making things worse?
We do so, by getting out of our own minds. And by that I mean, really, getting out and observing what is outside. Or around you.
Observe nature, tell yourself what is around you. Tell yourself the circus that’s going on in your head, isn’t your circus and those monkeys aren’t yours either. They don’t have a place in your head. Or the right to harm you. Don’t allow yourself to go into your turmoil within.
You see the cycle of getting into a spiral, is akin to getting on a train and missing the station you had to get off on. So you take the train over and you miss it again?
The cycle of the spiral continues. Your mind is suddenly in warfare.
You have to direct your mind to the outward, and out of the inward.
Tell yourself what’s around you, verbally or mentally.
“Trees with green leaves, a bush, flower fields, a sheep.” Anything that distracts you from your mind, until you forget what’s going on.
And that is no easy feat at first. But it’s going to be easier. Which is why, when our minds aren’t at war with itself, we practice that exact thing when our minds are at peace.
We look at our surroundings. Feel the heat the cold the wind, feel the ground and say what we see out loud or internally. It’s grounding. And it needs practice. But when you catch onto it. It helps.
