221 - The Front Runner
Tumblr media
We’ve previously discussed the work of Jason Reitman with our Men, Women, and Children episode, and this week we have another Reitman bomb: 2018′s The Front Runner. The film features Hugh Jackman as Senator Gary Hart and dramatizes Hart’s failed presidential campaign that was thwarted by an infidelity scandal. Released on Election Day after a very mild fall festival run, the film posits Hart’s case as the beginning of political muckraking in America, but fails to make a compelling case for that argument or find a pulse on the political climate in the immediate year’s following the 2016 Presidential Election.
This episode, we talk about Jackman’s prestige run in the shadow of Wolverine and his prospects this year with the reviled The Son in a weak Best Actor field. We also welcome Reitman regular J.K. Simmons into our Six Timers Club, and discuss Reitman’s other 2018 release Tully, post-Hart political sex scandals, and Vera Farmiga Phone Acting.
Topics also include Phil Hartman’s Clinton impersonation, current awards season malaise, and our upcoming mailbag episode!

I saw these tags made @fdelopera on this post and I can't help but think about how the same applies to media. Especially when activism has become so 'fandomized' online.
There's a certain aggression that some develop when Jewish actors, like Tara Strong and Mike Pollack, speak up in defense of Israelis and the response by the fandom is to...draw cartoon characters like Twilight Sparkle and Dr. Eggman saying "Free Palestine" and waving Palestinian flags.
Gentiles resent Jews existing in media, unless they can control them. Fictional characters will never disappoint them; fictional characters can reflect whatever the viewer wants. They can be the eternal "good Jew" - or, even better, not Jewish at all - while the actors who helped bring these characters to life are demonized. Representation in media didn't help gentiles develop empathy for Jews. Representation made gentiles feel like they can control us and shape us in the way that they feel most comfortable.

I'm curious, do you have specific favorite voice actors for the Sonic characters? (Like just the main few, Sonic, Shadow, Tails, etc.) if so, may we know your favorites?
Brace yourselves, this is gonna be a long one so under the cut.
Tumblr media
Jun'ichi Kanemaru is THE standard for Sonic. The guy is passionate about the role and captures him perfectly. Plus, he's a great singer! The English VA that came closest to matching him is Jason Griffith. (honorable mention to Devon Mack. Low as my opinion is of Prime, Devon's voice is actually pretty suitable for Sonic. Would like to hear him in a better product!)
Tumblr media
The late Chikao Ōtsuka for Eggman was wonderful, but I have zero complaints with Mike Pollack. Really, no matter what style or tone he's portrayed Eggman in, he's always done it superbly. I'd say of all English VA's that worked in this series, Mr. Pollack's probably been the one who's NEVER had a miss. Guy's got incredible range even in his work outside of Sonic (using this as a chance to shill the Pluto Anime since he starred in it. GO WATCH IT PLEASE.)
Tumblr media
Tails is really really REALLY hard to mess up. His voice actresses have typically been great at capturing him (save for OVA Tails who talks like he has a cold). Coleen's a fine Tails and suitable replacement for Amy Palant but I may still prefer Palant just because she's the nostalgic one for me being in all the 2000's games plus Sonic X.
Tumblr media
Knuckles voice preference is a tough call. His VA needs to be able to play up both his aggressive and gentler sides. It's a toss up between Dan Green and his current VA Dave B Mitchell. Mitchell has been doing good work in the animated shorts so I like him and he's the best we've had since Dan moved on. His Japanese VA, Nobutoshi Kanna, is great as well for the same reasons. :)
Tumblr media
Amy's best actress is still her JPN VA, Taeko Kawata (who is also a lovely singer!) Lisa Ortiz to this day is STILL her best ENG VA. She captured Amy's youthful, cutesy appeal but can IMMEDIATELY switch to her assertive side naturally. Fantastic range and it's too bad that Amy's assertiveness has been subdued so much lately that this can't be fully appreciated anymore.
Tumblr media
Cream's had far fewer options to choose from. I like both her actresses in JPN (Sayaka Aoki) and ENG (Rebecca Honig) honestly. I do like the almost whispery gentleness to her ENG voice particularly. Just helps her feel very soft and sweet.
Tumblr media
Shadow's JPN VA, Kōji Yusa, is so good. You really can't go wrong here. For the ENG VA, this might be a bit controversial because while I appreciate David Humphrey as Shadow's debut in SA2, I'm still partial to Jason Griffith purely because once he got accustomed to Shadow as a character, he really elevated the role. I think his performance in 06 was one of the best moments for the character overall.
Tumblr media
Rouge might one of the few times where I actually prefer her current ENG voice actress, Karen Strassman, to her older one. Her JPN VA, Rumi Ochiai, is THE standard tho so Karen just suits her best as a close match! Youthful yet still mature and her flirty quality doesn't sound too forced.
Tumblr media
Omega's JPN VA (Taiten Kusunoki) IS SO AMAZING. It's hilariously deeper than I expected but still robotic so something about it just WORKS. His ENG VA is alright too. But I just love the JPN Voice, I don't know why.
May do a part two if I have time for the others!

While I do agree that having voice actors read off a bunch of memes instead of AI is a lot more fun, assuming that a lot of voice actors are okay with doing meme requests isn't true.
I know Mike Pollack refuses to do Dr. Eggman for non SEGA approved projects because someone tricked him into saying the "Snooping as usual I see?' line during a podcast interview.
Not to mention some English dub voice actors and actresses have gotten plenty of inappropriate requests from fans at cons.
So yeah, if a voice actor is totally cool with reading a meme as a specific character, then they should be allowed to do so, but if someone doesn't like doing that, then their personal boundaries should be respected.

Some notes: If not for tne one film to one director.rule there would have been more Mike Leigh in the list, it was very hard to choose, but I think Naked was the right choice. I’m one of those people who likes to re-watch films I really enjoy quite a lot and looking back there are some films which reappear fairly often on these Top20 lists - and there are a couple this time - but that’s just the way it is!

Eddy Current in “A Thunder Like Drumming” - Part 1 of a 3 part collaboration between Ted McKeever -- indie comics creator and later artist on Rachel Pollack’s run on Doom Patrol -- and Mike Mignola, no introduction needed. Ran as back ups for issues 9 - 11 of McKeever’s Metropol, which was published by Marvel’s Epic imprint, which resurrected -- quite literally -- his indie character of the same name. Despite a lot of McKeever’s independent work being picked up by Mignola’s home base Dark Horse, these shorts have never been reprinted. First I’ve run across this character or McKeever’s work -- courtesy of Bill Haynes on twitter -- so I’ll definitely have to track more of this down.

Favorite Voice for Eggman? I know you mostly enjoy the games so Bristow, Pollack or maybe how Brian Drummond's take in Prime?
I can only speak for English as I've listened to some but not all or much of the other languages but my favorite is Mike Pollock and Deem Bristow tied! I'm glad I don't have the common bias of picking the one I heard first because when I got into the series, it was through Heroes where Deem Bristow still played him, and X as the first time Mike Pollock played him, followed by Shadow 2005, all around the same time.
I think they're the two best English voices the series has ever had in general too, both the strongest most talented of their casts. (Respect to the others too though, I just honestly feel that way)
Deem Bristow's will forever be special for first really bringing the character for what he's really supposed to be to life with an English voice in the games. Deem was amazing from the first line he delivered in Adventure. His performance was so full of Eggman's crazy energy and dramatic showmanship and evil, it was the perfect choice for him.
Mike Pollock was booked as a sound alike to Deem's performance but it eventually evolved into his own take and gave the character the perfect balance of evil and threatening and humorous. There's a reason they've kept him around for 20 years, he's really helped bring him to life with tons of entertainment and fun with tons of fantastic performances.
I can never choose between them as a result and they'll never be topped in my eyes. They capture everything I love about Eggman perfectly and all my favorite line deliveries come from both of them 💜
I'm still not sure how I feel about Brian Drummond's. It almost sounds as if he's trying to sound like past voices but I think it's best when it's more unique. There's also not much to go off as he was only alive for 6 mins and died and got replaced with the Chaos Council I don't care for lol. But I think he had potential, if he changed some things up he might've become one of my favorites, maybe even right after Deem and Mike.

La-La Land Records and recording engineer Mike Matessino have popped out another one!
“Another one” is one more expanded, “limited edition” John Williams 2-CD soundtrack. “Sabrina” is the Sydney Pollack movie where Pollack didn’t sign his long-standing composer Dave Grusin because he wanted the full orchestra for his romantic comedy with Harrison Ford and Julia Ormond.
Enter John Williams who wrote his most romantic soundtrack.
I think Williams loves the score as much as we do: for one track, he insisted on playing the piano himself and has done so on occasion when the main theme was performed in live concerts conducted by others…
Other unique element: Williams wrote two songs for the movie. The Brit Gordon Sumner better known as “Sting” sings one of them.
