🌟CASTING MY MUTUALS IN: SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET!🌟
Side note: I cast based on if the character reminds me of the moot, or if I can see the moot playing the character! If you get cast as a bad guy, of course I don't think of you that way! The reason I casted you is the second reason, I can just see you in that role! Cool? Cool! Now grab your razors, and let's get to cutting!
For those who paid attention to my blog, you all saw this first one coming 😅:
Finley as Sweeney Todd and Zeep (@ziipzeepzop-eez) as Mrs. Lovett
Tumblr media
Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford as Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett in the picture. (2023 Broadway)
Reasons for...me!: Sweeney is an actual dream role of mine! Not to mention it'd be a blast to get to play a not nice guy for 2 hours >:)
Reasons for Zeep: I wholeheartedly believe Zee has the comedic chops to play Lovett, and would absolutely sell the serious moments as well. In Zee we trust 😌
Mari (@heylittlestellbird) as Johanna
Tumblr media
Maria Bilbao as Johanna in the picture. (2023 Broadway)
Reasons for Stella: Johanna is associated with birds. Who's got "bird" in their username? Mari! I rest my case! XD /silly
Atlas (@literatureisdying) as Anthony Hope
Tumblr media
Jordan Fisher as Anthony in the picture. (2023 Broadway)
Reasons for Atlas: Anthony's number one character trait is yearning for Johanna. Atlas' number one trait is yearning for Auden. Simple! /silly
Mikey (@mushroom-hoodie) as The Beggar Woman
Tumblr media
Ruthie Ann Miles as The Beggar Woman in the picture. (2023 Broadway)
Reasons for Mikey: Admittedly at first I had casted you as the Beggar Woman, because one, I just couldn't turn down your offer to be included, and two, I was struggling to think of skmeone else to cast you as but the more I thought about it the more I genuinely liked it! I think you'd do a really good job in this role! ^^
Frog (@ofthefrogs) as Tobias "Toby" Ragg
Tumblr media
Joe Locke as Toby in the picture. (2023 Broadway)
Reasons for Froggy: I mean....just look at you and then look at Toby and tell me you don't look alike.
But also! Toby is a sweetheart! Froggy is also a sweetheart! I rest my case.
Ender (@ender-outlaw) as Adolfo Pirelli
Tumblr media
Nicholas Christopher as Pirelli in the picture. (2023 Broadway)
Reasons for Ender: While you and Pirelli really couldn't be any more different, you're already a very charming person (Pirelli is in fact not that XD) and I think you'd have a great time playing him! Also, this is Tumblr! Who gives a hoot about gender? We can have a female Pirelli if we want!! >:D
Greaseball (@gb-diesellok) as Judge Turpin
Tumblr media
Jamie Jackson as Turpin in the picture. (2023 Broadway)
Reasons for Greaseball: Just like Ender and Pirelli, you and Turpin really couldn't be any more different XD but your voice definitely fits comfortably into all of Turpin's vocal parts! ^^
Rook (@rook-specter) as Beadle Bamford
Tumblr media
John Rapson as Bamford in the picture. (2023 Broadway)
Reasons for Crepuscule: Just like Ender and Pirelli AND Geebs and Turpin, you and Bamford aren't very much alike either! Who woulda guessed? XD
But I think your portrayal would be absolutely delightful and very funny (very much like his portrayal in the 2023 Broadway revival funnily enough)
And last, but most certainly not least..
What's a musical without it's Ensemble? :D
Tumblr media
From left to right, we have:
@sandsmand, Troy (@the-fag-with-the-swag), Ash (@ripash), Wolf (@electricfied-wolf), Razzle (@whistlingstarlight), Ash (@idk-what-to-make-user), Charlie (@gently-decaying-flowers), Cal (@treasure-goblin), Amor (@nuncscioquidsitamor-14), Gabi (@splendidred05), Finn (@lordcatwich), & Eli (@theelispace)!

Tumblr ate my formatting
So here's the answers to those worldbuilding questions again
Most gnolls broadly believe in free will. In eons past it is said the mothers of gnollkind stole it from the greater pantheon. And the firstborn of the first matriarch was slain in the escape. The high mortality rate of firstborn cubs is a manifestation of her eternal grief.
The lupin schism on a weekly basis but broadly believe in a sort of guided free will. The Fathers guide your path, if only you have the wisdom to hear them.
Burrowmen listen to the Earth. Only they know what it says. It is widely believed that the Hollow Men were worshippers of a wrathful god. The Hollowing was its terrbile vengeance for a petty sin.
The dominant human religions usually have to do with with sea and harvest deities.
The lands of the Hollow Men are shrouded in mystery. Few have dared to venture further than the border cities, fewer still have returned.
Gnolls are a split between hunter/gatherer bands and agricultural communities. Nomadic groups follow a seasonal route between better established communities, chasing migratory prey animals for the Great Hunt.
Gnollish holidays are frequent and boisterous, centering around celebrating the safe return of the hunters and fishers, their bountiful catch. And, occasionally, mourning those lost along the way.
The Lupin follow the cycles of the moon. Each full moon represents the birth of a Father. The ninth cycle marks the final birth, and the completion of their pantheon. Festivous traditions vary, but it's usually a celebratory event.
Gnollish cuisine tends toward the cured meats and hearty vegetables. Honey is a prominent ingredient across the continent, as gnolls are accomplished beekeepers.
It is said that burrowmen eat stones and drink the black blood of the Earth. The reality is more along the lines of tubers, fungus, and a variety of subterranean flora and fauna. A baked sticklebug only looks like a rock. And deepflower wine is just Like That.
The lupin have a long tradition of animal husbandry. It is said that it was the gift of The Fathers, so that their kind would never go hungry again. There are a few hardy cultivars of berries and nuts that feature prominently alongside various meat dishes.
Humans are predominately vegetarians as a matter of practicality. The lands surrounding human settlements tend to resemble enormous gardens. What meat there is tends to be more prominent near lupin and gnollish lands, where harvests are traded.
Lupin children are traditionally expected to be athletic. A lupin who can't manage a fifteen minute mile is considered a bit of a layabout.
Gnollish children do a great deal of the beekeeping. Most gnolls in the temperate region are expected to have some level of familiarity with it.
A burrowman that can't swim is considered to be two steps from death at any time.
It's a bit odd for just about anyone but a human to know how to ride a horse. A gnoll is too big, a burowman is too small, and a lupin would find it undignified.
The vast majority of people get around on their own two feet. Small watercraft are common around rivers. A few gnollish clans cultivate beasts of burden that are prized for their strength and endurance. While human beasts of burden are prized for their temperament. Anyone can handle a human carthorse. But a gnollish caravan gnu often requires a gnoll to handle.
On the gnollish coasts, catamaran types of craft are most prominent. Prized for their speed and agility for chasing down game fish through the great coastal shallows.
Humans have the benefit of immense old growth forests with which to construct deep draft sailing ships. Laden heavily with cargoes of fruit and vegetable preserves.
Few outsiders have ever seen the deeping lakes. Fewer still have seen the paddleboats of the burrowmen. Some are large enough to be villages unto themselves.
Gnolls whoop! Of course, even the largest gnoll's voice can only carry so far. Many clans have a tradition of runners. A whooping gnoll's voice can be heard for miles on a clear night. A string of runners can relay a message across a great distance.
Where the soil gives way to the living stone, burrowmen construct elaborate horns and drums. Over centuries, these have evolved a complex language. And the echo tunnels carry on for hundreds of miles distant.
Humans generally rely on their semaphore towers. Or a light rider and a swift horse. Much like the gnolls, the lupin generally rely on their voice for much of their communication. Though some clans put their falconers to work as messengers.
Being a mishmash and a hodgepodge of inspirations, nothing makes the setting particularly unique. And it's pretty easy to spot the inspirations.

I Hope We Never See October (2/?)
Tumblr media
When his personal life and football career go up in flames, Killian Jones escapes England for America, finding seclusion in Martha’s Vineyard in order to hide from his demons. It’s a fresh start, or at the very least a paused moment in his life, and all he needs is a few months alone to allow his heart to heal. He doesn’t count on meeting Emma Swan.
Emma’s life depends on tourists who come to the island every summer. It’s how she makes her money working in restaurants and clubs across the vineyard, but every year, she cannot wait until autumn comes and her life returns to normal. She especially cannot wait for Killian Jones to leave.
Rating: Mature
a/n: Thank you guys for reading the first part of this! I cannot say enough how much I appreciate all of you and how glad I am little things like this bring you guys joy! Thanks to @resident-of-storybrooke for reading over these words. ❤️

“Emma, the couple at table two wants to talk to you, and the woman at table seven has a complaint about the quiche. Something about there being eggs in them.”
Emma groans and closes her laptop to look at Ashley, one of the new waitresses she hired this summer. She’s good, courteous, and she’s always here on time. Emma is going to hate to lose her for a few weeks when she has her baby, but come hell or high water, the girl is getting maternity leave even if Emma can’t manage more than three weeks without the owner getting involved and likely trying to fire all of them. She deserves months more than that, but Emma can’t change the system.
It’s a shit system, especially for moms.
“They don’t want eggs…in their quiche? Are you serious?”
“She’s vegan and claims she’s been misled.”
Emma rolls her eyes and stands from her chair. She pulls her jean shorts down, the frayed edges covering just a little more thigh, and unties the bottom of her button-down. She probably needs to start dressing up more for this job, but she can’t be bothered. She managed to wear her Blue Dog Tavern polo last week, so that seems like enough effort. “We have symbols on the menu to indicate dietary restrictions, but this isn’t really a restaurant for dietary restrictions beyond one or two items. I’ll deal with it. Thanks, Ashley.”
It’s Sunday morning, which is their second busiest time after Friday and Saturday nights, and the Blue Dog is packed. It’s all hands on deck this morning, but Emma was hoping to get some scheduling and produce ordering done in her office during it. But this is a restaurant, so of course there’s never any time for a breather when she needs it the most. She’ll finish all that later, she guesses, because she has a feeling neither of these conversations are going to be a short one.
And she’s right about that. The woman hating on the quiche pitches a fit and demands her money back before threatening to sue the place and, quite frankly, threatening to cut off Emma’s legs, and Emma has to resolve that without losing her cool when all she wants to do is punch jerks like that straight across the jaw. Then the couple at table two asks her to run through every item on the menu and whether or not everything is organically sourced.
They serve fried mac and cheese balls at ten in the morning and have kitschy, slightly tacky artwork nailed onto the darkly stained wood. If you eat outside on the patio, you get a nice view of people taking off a little more than they should while sunbathing on the surrounding beaches and docked boats. There’s also the occasional ferry that drives by and blows a loud horn that tourists seem to get a kick out of. Do they really think everything is organically sourced?
God, sometimes she really hates tourists.
This is a nice place, though. It’s not somewhere you go for fine dining, but their brunch is divine, it’s got a good atmosphere, and the new bartenders she’s hired this summer make better drinks than you can get at any reasonably priced bar in a ten-mile radius. She likes this little part of the island, and even though she hates tourists, they do fund her entire life. So maybe she hates them a little less than usual when the paychecks roll in.
Today is not a day where the paycheck is rolling in.
Emma notices some of the tables are a little slow, so she picks up the slack, getting drinks and refills and checking on meals. It keeps her on her feet for most of the morning and through the lunch rush, but when it’s over, she collapses on a stool at the end of the bar.
“Chip, can you get me a coffee?” she asks without looking up. “I don’t care what milk or creamer you put in it as long as you don’t bring it to me black. Though, I think I need the caffeine so badly that I’d drink it. I don’t know why I agreed to work the late dinner shift at The Oaks last night. I’m exhausted.”
When she doesn’t get a response, she looks up for Chip. He’s nowhere to be seen, and when she checks her phone schedule, she realizes it’s his break time. Of course it is.
“Lass, I don’t believe the barkeep is here anymore.”
“Yeah, it’s his break, but I can help you. What’s your poison?”
“The coffee you’re having.”
Emma nods and turns to look at the man talking to her, and if she wasn’t so tired, she would have recognized the voice a hell of a lot faster than she did. A lot of different accents pass through this place, but he’s the first British one in awhile. Also the first one to show up in her backyard. Or the Fishers’ backyard, technically, but she’s been renting it for long enough for it to feel like her own even if she’s changed very little of the furniture and decorations outside her bedroom.
Killian. She thinks that was his name. Honestly, she’s surprised she remembers anything because she was in such a rush to get to work that she didn’t have time to deal with all the people at her house. But he was unexpected and attractive – she’s not blind to attractive men no matter what Ruby and Mary Margaret think – and he threw her off for a minute. He looked familiar, but she has no idea why. There’s no way she would have met him before.
But she also doesn’t care. She’s got a gut feeling that she needs to watch out for him, that there’s something that’s not right, and him being at her job is proving that to her. What are the odds that he’d wander in a few days after meeting her when she’s pretty sure he’s never been here before?
Then again, maybe that’s why he’s familiar. It’s June. A lot of people come through here, and she’s not going to remember all their faces. Sometimes she does, though, in the back of her mind where vague, slightly blurry memories reside.
“Sure thing,” Emma sighs, standing from the stool. “Do you have a server?”
“Aye. Heather, I believe, but…”
“But she’s on her phone.” Emma shakes her head. “My boss’s niece. Not much I can do about it, but I’ll get you your coffee, a water, and take your order right away.”
He nods, going back to his own phone, and Emma takes that as her cue to get behind the bar and start making some coffee. She doesn’t usually work this machine, so it takes her a minute to get it right all while she feels Killian staring at her.
“Do you need any suggestions on the menu?” Emma asks as the coffee percolates.
“How are the salads?”
“I prefer things with more calories, but they’re good. Our vegetables are fresh, and I personally enjoy the strawberry poppyseed with chicken, but I know not everyone loves fruit in salads.” He hums behind her as his mug fills, and she grabs some milk from the fridge under the sink, turning to show him. “Milk okay?”
“It’s perfect, Swan.” She raises her brows, which he mirrors, until he cocks his head forward and his lips form an obnoxious little smirk. “On the nametag, love.”
“Now, what did I say about being your love?”
“That you’re not.”
“Exactly.” She finishes making his coffee and hands it over. He’s a customer, she reminds herself. She’s got to try to be a little bit nicer than she wants to be. “So, the salad? If you’re looking more toward the healthy options with protein, the grilled chicken breast on its own is fantastic. You get two sides, which you can find at the bottom of the menu.”
He nods and looks at the menu for half a second before looking up. “The salad would be great. Thank you.”
He picks up his mug, pointing it toward her, and Emma takes it as a dismissal so she can put his order in, and hopefully she can get Heather to do her damn job and serve him for the rest of the meal. She doesn’t like that he knows where she lives and works, and even though she doesn’t think Ariel and Eric spend time with shady people, something about him gives her weird vibes.
His face just looks so damn familiar, and usually she’s really good remembering faces. Huh.
And Emma is usually right about these things. He’s likely nothing more than a rich man looking for a break from life by renting out a large house on the island. He’ll spend a week or two, maybe a month depending on his work situation, here, sleep with as many women as he can, and then he’ll go, never thinking of Martha’s Vineyard again. And she’s pretty sure Ariel does something having to do with high-powered people over in London, so he fits the profile. God, she must have seen him before with Ariel or something. That has to be it.
But for now, he’s a customer, and since Heather seems to be completely checked out, Emma guesses she’s going to have to deal with him. After this morning, he won’t be the worst person she has to deal with all day, and since she’s working at The Oaks tonight, she imagines being treated like shit then will outshine all of this.
Why the hell did she decide to pick up so many shifts at The Oaks? It’s a stuffy country club where tips reflecting the price of the meal aren’t even guaranteed, but it’s extra money with a flexible schedule. She’s doing okay on the money front right now, though, and if she were sane, she’d take some time off and relax, maybe enjoy the beach or any of the hundreds of good restaurants around here.
She is obviously not sane.
-/-
“Oh my God,” Emma grumbles as she strips out of her jean shorts, kicking them to the ground before unbuttoning her shirt. “I’m so tired of people.”
“I’m people,” Ruby says. “Nice bra, by the way. The girls look great.”
Emma rolls her eyes, but she does glance down at her boobs and hike them up a bit. They do look great today. “Shut up.” Emma picks up the black dress she has to wear at the country club and slips it over her shoulders. “You know I’m not tired of you.”
“That’s because you’ve barely seen me.”
“Busy. I’m busy. I work way too much. Speaking of that, why the hell aren’t you at work?”
Ruby stands from her couch and grabs her name tag from the end table. “I’m in between shifts. Granny’s in charge downstairs. I have a five-second commute to work, unlike you. Why are you changing here again?”
“Don’t want to run into any of the people at my house.” Emma smooths her dress and turns to Ruby’s mirror to reapply lipstick and put on some mascara. She’s got to wash her hair tomorrow. It’s hanging by on a thread today, if that thread is a little greasy and has a hell of a lot of dry shampoo in it. “But don’t worry, tomorrow, I will be out of your hair as they will soon be out of mine.”
“You know I’m always fine with you being in my business. Mary Margaret and David are coming here for dinner tonight. Any chance you can slip away?”
Emma finishes another coat of mascara. “Can’t. Working until past closing and then heading straight home to sleep in my house of strangers.”
Ruby laughs, carefree as always, and for a moment, the jealousy stings. Ruby has plenty of her own shit going on, but she always handles it with such ease. She’s the most carefree person Emma has ever met, and Emma can’t imagine living like that without way too much alcohol in her system.
“I told you that you could stay with me this week. Have I ever said it’s batshit crazy that they come to visit and are okay with you still staying there? Because that is batshit crazy.”
Emma shrugs and pulls back to take in her appearance. This is as good as it’s going to get. She doesn’t think she’ll be using her looks to get her any tips tonight, which is a crying shame since that’s half the reason she took this job in the first place. She knows exactly how to charm some of the older men into giving her more money by flirting a little, and she’s not ashamed that she has to give away her dignity to do it. She had to hire a dinner-shift manager at the Blue Dog because she was doing the work of two people with the pay of one. Now she’s doing the work of five people with the pay and of one and half people, so obviously she’s winning at life.
“I’m never there, and they seem like good people. I think they’re just glad I actually maintain the place and am slowly but surely getting through some of the renovations.” Emma looks at her hair again and ties it up in a ponytail with the elastic from her wrist. “Any way you can make me a grilled cheese to go?”
“Only if you agree to go to a bar with all of us sometime in the next month.”
“Yeah, fine. Whatever you want.”
God, she hopes Ruby doesn’t remember this conversation. The last thing she wants to do right now is go out with her friends and then end up sitting alone as they all make out with their partners and leave without telling Emma goodbye.
Actually, the last thing she wants to do is go to work again today, but here she goes.
-/-
Emma quietly turns the key in her front door. She saw that the kitchen light was still on from the street, and while the Fishers likely just forgot to turn it off, she doesn’t want to run the risk of seeing them tonight. It’s their last night here, so she only has to make it through one or two more awkward conversations before she has the house to herself. It’ll be just her and the creaky floors. She can collapse on the couch in her dress instead of having to walk all the way up the stairs and make it to her bedroom like a responsible adult.
In another world, Emma would like to own a house like this. It’s charming. That’s the best way to describe it. It’s two floors, three bedrooms, has bay windows and built-in bookshelves, and the cabinets in the kitchen are a light green. She likes that it’s not cookie cutter white all the way around like some of the nicer houses around here. It has character, and though there are a few things she’d change beyond the needed repairs she does for the Fishers, it’s got good bones. Plus, the location is fantastic, and the backyard is spacious. It allows Emma to spend time in the sun without being stuck on a crowded beach or near a busy dock.
But this is not another world, and Emma could never afford a house this close to the coastline. She’s got no idea why she still lives here. Well, that’s not true, she knows exactly why she still lives here, and it’d be possible for her to pick up and move inland toward Boston. She just…she can’t. She’s been here for ten years after leaving her last foster home in Brockton, and it’s been a comfortable reprieve. She’s got her friends and her job(s), and even though she’s got years of hospitality experience, there’s no guarantee someone like her with a GED can get a job this well-paying and accommodating somewhere else. Plus, her housing is almost free, and she really can’t pass that up.
It all comes back to the house, which she’s dreading going into now no matter how much she wants to collapse onto her bed.
(Or the couch. She really misses the couch. It’s the best for napping.)
Emma steps inside, avoiding the places that make the floor groan, but it’s impossible to dodge them all. She tenses, then hurries across the living room toward the stairs, only turning to the opening to the kitchen at the last minute.
“Holy fuck,” Emma gasps, dropping her purse. It hits the ground in a gentle thud, her keys spilling out and clacking along the floor.
“Didn’t mean to scare you there, Swan.”
Emma’s breath hitches as she realizes who it is sitting at her kitchen table.
Killian…whatever his last name is. She’s got no clue and doesn’t care to ask. What she does want to know is why he’s sitting here alone at two in the morning like a fucking serial killer.
“What the hell are you doing here?”
He takes a sip of his drink, coffee she thinks from the smell, and leans back in the chair, the front legs tipping up with him. “Getting sober so I can drive home. Had two drinks with dinner, and it appears I’ve become a bit of a lightweight.”
“Don’t drink much then? I thought all you Brits liked going to the pub.”
He laughs, smile bright against the black of his stubble despite her poor attempt at his accent. “We do, but not so much me anymore. Trying to cut back.”
“Yeah, I get that.” She leans down to pick up her bag, grabbing her keys and tossing them back in. “I also get that we have Uber here. You might want to try that the next time you have a little too much to drink. You look like a murderer sitting in my kitchen like this.”
“It was two glasses of rum, nothing excessive. Wishing Ariel and Eric well before they leave in the morning.” He leans forward, the chair landing on all four legs, and downs the rest of his mug. “I don’t make a habit of drinking too much.”
“I don’t care what you do in your personal time. Just don’t make a mess in my house…or your friends’ house, I guess. And sleep on the couch if you want. There are blankets in the basket.”
She doesn’t know why she’s offering him the couch. She should be making him leave. Her heart is still leaping out of her chest from him scaring her, and even though this has been her home for years, she technically can’t ask him to leave. In reality, Ariel has probably offered him the couch already.
What a long day.
She wants it to be over.
“That’s surprisingly kind of you.”
Emma’s step falters, and while she was turning away from the man, she decides to turn back and narrow her eyes. What the hell is that supposed to mean? “I guess I’m full of surprises for men who don’t know me.”
“Just who are you then, Swan?” he asks, standing from the chair and putting his mug in the sink, turning the faucet on while never losing eye contact.
“Wouldn’t you like to know?”
“Perhaps I would.”
A shiver runs down Emma’s spine, but she ignores it and walks up the stairs. This is a weird week, one she doesn’t want to repeat, and the last thing she needs is to spend too much time with a man who thinks he can charm his way into anything with a few smooth words and a smile. She’s been around enough men like that in her lifetime, but it doesn’t matter with him. Tomorrow, he’ll be gone with Eric and Ariel, and she’ll be back to being able to walk around her house without pants whenever she wants.
Tomorrow, this weird as hell week will be over, and she’ll be back to normal…mostly.

(first apologies if this is a duplicate; I got a "bad request" notification the first time I tried to send this ask) but anyhow; I saw your tags on my Lucretia post and i am not sure how to reply to tags?? but i want to see your version of that scene! (if you still want to share) I love Lucretia very much and love to see other peoples' takes on her. anyway, I hope you are having a good day!
OH MY GOD YAY!!
I mean, cool, whatever. I guess I could share a little bit of that fic. That’s fine.
(yayayayayayayay eeeeeeeeeee)
Okay, part of me wanted to blast you with the entire chapter, but that’s 25-ish pages so I’m forcing myself to show restraint here and only include the tail end. There’s a little bit of context missing, because it’s the last section of Chapter 10 of a fic that so far has at least 32 chapters, but I think it all makes sense. It’s basically just “here’s what happened in that cycle when everybody else was a statue person” and it was, you know, not a good time. (There’s some implied Magcretia, sorry not sorry.)
Plus it’s really good. I know that sounds arrogant, but I’ve spent the last 4-5 years hating every word I’ve ever written, and I’m going to enjoy this confidence for as long as it chooses to stay.
So anyway, I hope you enjoy!
There are no line breaks on tumblr anymore so this is the part where the actual writing starts:
When the Hunger arrived, it was a relief more than anything.
Lucretia had been in the middle of defending The Starblaster from a group of marauders climbing like ants all over the dented and hastily-repaired sides of the ship, trying to figure out if she could possibly shake them all free without having to resort to the magic she’d deduced made it possible for the court to find her, when the sky turned dark and everything went gray.
And her first thought was, Oh thank Pan. (She wasn’t a religious person at all, but enough time with Merle had made the casual prayers second nature.) This nightmare was almost over. In less than an hour, she’d have her family back.
She was so close to seeing Magnus again.
“Fisher, get back in your tank!” she shouted, abandoning the shield she’d been summoning and sprinting to the helm — she’d spent so much time this year running for her life that she could race from one end of the ship to the other without becoming winded. None of the marauders had made it onto the deck, but she felt the air above her head crackle with a spell that blazed past, and as she reached the controls she heard the now-familiar amplified voice call, “You are under arrest for multiple counts of evading the authority of the co — what the hell’s going on here?”
Oh, great. All her friends were here. Now all she needed was for the boar and crocodile to make an appearance.
As the officer began to interrogate the marauders (his side of the conversation still blaring loud and clear), Lucretia took advantage of the confusion to throw the ship forward. She’d had enough foresight to keep the way in front of The Starblaster clear for just this purpose, and while a few hundred yards of ash-colored grass were flattened, she was able to get the ship into the air.
She pointed it up, away from the Hunger — up into space, into nothingness, into any universe except this one, somewhere she’d stared at and imagined but now was finally going into . . .
If she could get the damaged, shuddering ship up to speed and break through the atmosphere, that was.
If not, everything ended here.
A tentacle of swirling darkness stabbed into the ground inches away from her ship, forcing her to swerve hard and nearly lose her footing. She threw all her weight on the acceleration as more of the Hunger’s tentacles latched onto the planet, the labored roar of the engines nearly drowning out the screams of panic from the people below.
As The Starblaster rocketed over a shining city with strange statues and up into the sky, a whisper made Lucretia look around — before realizing it had come from inside her own head.
We’ve been looking for you.
She frowned, clutching at the helm even tighter. Was this some sort of new thing the Hunger could do, or one last awful trick played by this hostile planet?
Another whisper, louder and lower-pitched: You’ve been evading judgement for some time now.
A massive column of the Hunger collided with the planet directly in front of her. It was so close, she had no choice but to try and blow through it, even though that meant taking the biggest risk she had all year. But The Starblaster’s momentum was impossible to halt, and the mile-wide column was impossible to go around, so she gritted her teeth, hunched over the controls, and slammed on the accelerator.
The second she crossed into the Hunger, everything went silent and black.
Everything, that was, except for the whispers:
Lucretia, you have always let others take action and responsibility while you sit back and watch. You tell yourself this is worthwhile, but you know it is a lie. And yet when it is smartest and safest to proceed with caution, you take the most reckless path, because you refuse to admit you might be wrong. Your past sins are sloth, envy, and pride. How do you plead?
How did she plead? She didn’t plead for much of anything, except to survive long enough to fly them into the next cycle. The Hunger buffeted at the ship, wrapping smaller tentacles around its sleek metal body and trying to keep it from plowing forward; it might kill her — kill them all — but not knowing what else to do, she used Mage Hand to open the nearest window without leaving the helm and cast Fire Shield around the ship. It was weak and flickering compared to the spells of protection Merle could create, but the Hunger fell back with deafening shrieks of pain as flames licked the air around The Starblaster.
The awful whispers weren’t letting up, though, digging cold fingers deep into her mind and sending a chill shudder down through her very soul.
Your present sins are no less grave. You kill without remorse. You have allowed yourself to become vindictive and spiteful. You have not abandoned your past failings, but have added new ones since our initial audit. We see fit to add to your current list of transgressions the crime of wrath. How do you plead?
Suddenly there was a break in the shimmering darkness, a bolt of ash-gray sky widening like a tear in heavy fabric — and then she was through, outside of the Hunger and so far above the doomed planet that she couldn’t see the ground below. She let out a scream of triumph, the noise tearing like sandpaper along her exhausted and dry throat, and angled the ship until it was almost vertical. The Starblaster shot forward as though with one last burst of strength, shuddering as its engines were pushed to the absolute limit . . .
The ship suddenly jolted to a halt, mechanisms whirring like a swarm of angry bees.
Lucretia turned to the still-open window and saw the entire view had been replaced with blackness, oily-iridescent tentacles spilling into the ship as others wrapped around it. She threw all of her weight on the acceleration, but it didn’t move; then, after a single grinding moment, The Starblaster began to fly backward, pulled back toward the core of the Hunger.
She could hear its gnashing teeth.
“NO!” The word exploded out of her, coming from somewhere far below conscious thought. She abandoned the helm just long enough to run to the window, ignoring the tentacles that curled around her ankles as she pointed her wand at the offshoot of the Hunger that had its hold on her, aiming for where the base met the rest of the massive column, and shot off a burst of lightning. There was another hideous wail and the tentacles around the ship shuddered and pulled away, just a slight loosening of their incredible grip.
Her entire body shaking with terror and fury, she pointed her wand at the same spot and cast Finger of Death.
The screaming was like a sonic blast — a thousand million voices filled with rage and pain and fear — knocking her onto her back and sending her skidding across the bridge. She scrambled to her feet, stumbling over her robe and lurching to the helm. The sound of the engines returning to full blast was like the roar of a furious animal loosed from its cage, and the last of the Hunger fell back as the ship threw itself up into space. It felt like the air was shouting with every conceivable emotion.
As the panic subsided and her head cleared, she realized it wasn’t the air screaming; it was those whisperers.
So much rage. So much wrath.
No remorse.
No different than the monster she tries to flee.
They were growing louder with every word, overlapping and running together until she struggled to pick out individual phrases —
She betrays the people she supposedly loves most
She destroys a family — destroys the memory of the family
Robs them of themselves
Who has the right?
No one has the right
The sound was becoming unbearable, deafening. Her ears felt like they were leaking; she lifted her hand to one and her fingers came back covered in blood.
It didn’t make sense — it wasn’t an external sound — it wasn’t an external force, but something ripping her apart from within.
It was the sound of going mad.
At that point she was barely able to understand anything
leaves him to die in agony in a hell she helped create
takes advantage of the innocent who make the mistake of believing in her
such a sweet boy, and all you do is lie to him
do you think you can make these decisions for the world?
the heartbreak you will cause
the betrayal
pride — such unfathomable pride
the deaths you will cause
the lives you will ruin
the blood that stains your hands
coldhearted — cowardly
wrath — envy — sloth
pride
PRIDE
Our judgement is decided.
You have been found wanting.
Something hardened in her chest, calcifying her lungs and making it impossible to breathe. Lucretia doubled over, her hands scrabbling to keep the ship moving, as her flesh turned hard, brittle, the feeling like casting Stone Skin but somehow it’d gotten inside . . .
She couldn’t move her tongue. She couldn’t breathe. Blackness crowded the edge of her vision — not like she was blacking out, but like her eyes just suddenly weren’t there anymore
everything went wobbly, the universe becoming untethered just for a moment
And when it stabilized, she realized she could move again, see again. She took a deep, tremulous breath and turned back from the helm, sliding to the floor in a heap.
It was less than a second, before the I.P.R.E. crew fully materialized, but she didn’t see it happen. As soon as the surreal, smoky outlines of her friends wavered into being, she dropped her head in her hands, a sob she’d been holding back for months finally escaping her throat.
She did it.
Magnus’s hands closed around her upper arms and he gently tugged her into an embrace. She could feel the cool steel of the bridge under her knees, heard the voices of all her friends speaking all at once. She was dimly aware she was talking, mumbling nonsense to herself as she waited for the world to stop spinning.
The last thing she was aware of before slipping into unconsciousness was Magnus’s breath on her forehead and his warm fingers combing through her hair.

Listed Fandoms Roundup
While we were collecting the names and numbers of ‘Other’ write-in fandoms for the Unlisted Fandom Challenge, we had a look at the way signups were going for the fandoms listed in the dropdown.
More than 100 contributors signed up to work with ANY fandom! Of those, nearly half are interested in providing beta services for your fics, including various levels of editing, medpicking, britpicking, and the like. A quarter are interested in drawing fanart, and the rest want to write fanfics, create fanvids, or record podfics.
Of the named fandoms in the FTH dropdown, MCU was the leader by a mile for most of the sign up period, but toward the end Good Omens started eating into their lead. And, for a good long while HP and Sherlock kept flip-flopping over which of them would have the third most signups. In the end, they tied. They’re followed by Star Wars, and then Supernatural, which finally pulled away and ahead of Teen Wolf, with whom things had been neck-and-neck for a while.
These seven fandoms made up nearly 40% of all signups for listed fandoms. The next eight - Star Trek, Yuri!!! On Ice, Doctor Who, Check Please!, The Witcher, and Hannibal - totaled roughly 12%. These THIRTEEN fandoms had just over half of all listed signups! One hundred four additional fandoms combined make up the other ~50% of listed fandom offers.
Actual percentage numbers are under the cut. Some of the fandoms with just a handful of signups are smaller, and the number of signups is fairly representative of their presence on tumblr - which has historically been FTH’s main channel for communicating. Others, though ... they’re fairly large, and appear to be under-represented based on signups. We’re thinking on ways to better reach those fandoms, and have another post in the works where we’re hoping you can help.

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger allegedly. I can’t say as I’ve ever noticed. I think it just kills you slowly. For me, the only thing that’s ever eased the grief of losing a much beloved cat is acquiring a successor as soon as possible and loving it fiercely. It’s the way I was brought up, and what I did after Dweezil died. But he had lived a long and charmed life, while at two years and ten months, Pekoe’s had barely begun. Plus I got to hold Dweezil to the bittersweet end and tell him goodbye and how very loved he was. Losing Peeks, particularly the way I did, is going to take some serious getting over.
Being under virtual house arrest doesn’t help either. There must be scores of little orange cats being fostered right now, but they’re all behind closed doors and absent from the internet. All the London rescue charities’ hands are tied until further notice; most vets are currently only performing emergency surgery, and the logistics of taking delivery of a pet you haven’t even met in an approved socially distanced manner, are challenging to say the least. The only kittens that seem to be up for grabs are on iffy, often scam-ridden websites at eye watering prices, even common little mogs, which is all I really want. And there are a lot of people buying those kittens. One guy apologised for not being able to respond personally to all the responses he got to his ad because he’d received over two hundred emails.
But I am looking, tumblr. Because every time some little orange punim makes my heart melt, I know I’m quite not as dead as I feel inside.  When I called the vets to ask them to take Pekoe’s name off the register (lest I received some cheerful reminder it was time for his shots on a day I couldn’t take it), my favourite receptionist was on duty. “You’ve got to get one,” she said; “Do it now. You’ve got to have a ginger; you without a ginger - that just isn’t right.” She has a point. I haven’t been gingerless for almost 30 years.
Tumblr media
The day Peeks died I’d planned a two-outfit post around this Arket Fortuny-pleated skirt, which cost me a pittance in the sales pre-lockdown. I put full make-up on for the first time in weeks, tried to make some sense of my horrific salt and pepper frizz, (seriously, my barnet has never looked so shite), and shot this iteration first. I had just restyled the skirt with a long Monki shirtdress and different accessories, when someone rapped on the front door and decimated my heart. I wore that second outfit all day and cried round the clock. Part of me doesn’t ever want to wear that Monki dress again, but I like it and that would be a waste, so I’ve resolved to style it very differently and make some positive memories with it when life gets a little easier.
Tumblr media
In the mean time I had these pics and, since I wanted to put some distance between now and my previous post, I thought I might as well use them. So if you were wondering how come I’m smiling in the first one, it’s because my world was still intact at that point.
Tumblr media
As you know I seriously dig a Phrynne Fisher vibe and this combo does it for me. I bought this kimono jacket ages ago because it was something insane like £12 reduced from £50. I had nothing that went with it apart from my Gap khaki linen trousers, but I knew something would turn up in the end. I felt the same way about the skirt till I realised they went together really well. The sparkly top was always miles too big and I very nearly chucked it into the charity bag last year. I am so glad I didn’t as the kimono hides its massiveness and it kind of pulls all the pinks together. This is why I always roll my eyes at the, “if you haven’t worn it for 6 months, bin it” malarky. Fat fashion doesn’t work the same as fast, or even slow, fashion. In short, if you build it, they will come.

Miss Fisher Australia Tour (67)
While participating in the Miss Fisher Fandom 30 Day Challenge four years ago (on Tumblr), I chose S2E10 Death on the Vine as the saddest episode. (Link here) The tone was depressing, slow, gloom, dark, cold, and a bit creepy, which of course was by design to tell the sad story because “two innocent men were killed, and the whole town worked together to cover it up”.
As an immigrant myself (from Taiwan to the U.S.), the topics of where one’s loyalty laid (or where it was perceived to lie) during wartime as well as the struggle of being completely integrated into and accepted by the adopted country are very intriguing to me. I concluded the post by saying “The world is full of people who are loving and embracing, but there would always be small groups who are ignorant, biased, resistant, and hostile toward the “outsiders” like those in Maiden Creek. Like Jack said, ‘May we never see the likes of her again’.”
So, does Maiden Creek really exist? Yes and No. I found several websites with photos and cordinates that suggested it’s a geographical area, but I don’t think there is a town by that name. However, there is a Maiden Gully, a suburb of the regional city of Bendigo, about 150 km (93 miles) north west of Melbourne. Since Bendigo was mentioned in this episode, I looked into its history.
According to Wikipedia, the discovery of gold during the 1850s made Bendigo one of the major Victorian era boomtowns in Australia. After the gold rush, the city’s population took a dip but accelerated again after WWII. It’s now the fourth largest inland city in Australia with almost 100,000 residents. Many ornate buildings built in a late Victorian colonial style are now registered by the National Trust of Australia for their architectural significance. In recent years, it starts to host several festivals annually, such as the Bendigo Writers Festival, Bendigo National Swap Meet for car parts, the Bendigo Blues and Roots Music Festival, the Bendigo Easter Festival, etc. If you don’t feel like driving, there are buses and trains conveniently running between Bendigo and Melbourne several times a day. The more research I do, the more I am impressed with Australia’s public transportation system.
You may be wondering why I haven’t mentioned the winery. It’s because the filming didn’t take place here. I will feature it in the next post.

A, E, I, O, U?
A -  Ships that you currently like a lot.
Elena Fisher x Nathan Drake (which is just my absolute otp), Gency, Mekamecha, French Frye (Jacob Frye x Arno Dorian)
E - Have you added anything cracky/hilarious to your fandom? If so, what?
I don’t think so?
I - Has Tumblr caused you to stop liking any fandoms, if so, which and why?
The Voltron fandom. Does that really need to be explained?
O - Choose a song at random. Which ship or character does it remind you of?
Mt Washington - Local Natives; reminds me of Desmond Miles (which is... weird, cause it’s a song from the Life Is Strange soundtrack lol)
U - Three favourite characters from three different fandoms, and why they’re your favorites.
Genji (Overwatch) - He’s badass as hell, cool, and his backstory is PREMIUM angst material. What’s not to like?
Aloy (Horizon Zero Dawn) - Is this just because HZD is my favourite game? You’ll never know. She’s a really great character, very well voice-acted, very cool and honestly I think it’s impossible not to love her after going through the story with her.
Ahsoka Tano (Star Wars) - SWTCW (and star wars overall) was my CHILDHOOD, I loved it so much. And Ahsoka was this super fun and snarky jedi girl, which immediately made her amazing to 8yo me. And I guess that impression stuck, cause here we are almost 10 years later.

Jay’s Follow Forever 2017/18 - Fuckin’ Lamestream Sellout Edition
This playlist and all previous follow forevers are available in the links below!
(2014/15 | ►♪♫♫ ) | (2015/16 | ►♪♫♫) | (2016/17 | ►♪♫♫) (2017/18 | ►♪♫♫)
In contrast to last year, this year we’ve collectively been nervously watching what that fucking horse is going to do next, hoping that that horse-catcher is about to tie to noose around both the horse and whichever twat let it in in the hospital in the first place.
So it was with music. Mainstream acts were left in the lurch allowing newcomers to come in and make a name for themselves, reflected in who got featured in last year’s list. This year however big name bands have reminded us that they can show the newbies a thing or two about how hold a tune
Given just how good 2018 has been for music, I left this year’s Follow Forever as late as I could just to jam everything in. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for sticking around, filling out my dash with things I actually care about and just y’know... reminding me that I value the friendships I made online as I do in cursed Meatspace
I’m following a few more people this year so a brief explanation - every year I pick out songs that either I associate most closely with you (assoc), or songs that I feel you would like that you may not have heard before (rec) and I always ensure that they’re songs released in the same period as the post. Solar System: 10 Things to Know This Week
The Living Planet Edition
youtube
Whether it's crops, forests or phytoplankton blooms in the ocean, our scientists are tracking life on Earth. Just as satellites help researchers study the atmosphere, rainfall and other physical characteristics of the planet, the ever-improving view from above allows them to study Earth's interconnected life.
1. Life on Earth, From Space
Tumblr media
While we (NASA) began monitoring life on land in the 1970s with the Landsat satellites, this fall marks 20 years since we've continuously observed all the plant life at the surface of both the land and ocean. The above animation captures the entirety of two decades of observations.
2. Watching the World Breathe
With the right tools, we can see Earth breathe. With early weather satellite data in the 1970s and '80s, NASA Goddard scientist Compton Tucker was able to see plants' greening and die-back from space. He developed a way of comparing satellite data in two wavelengths.
Tumblr media
When healthy plants are stocked with chlorophyll and ready to photosynthesize to make food (and absorb carbon dioxide), leaves absorb red light but reflect infrared light back into space. By comparing the ratio of red to infrared light, Tucker and his colleagues could quantify vegetation covering the land.
Expanding the study to the rest of the globe, the scientists could track rainy and dry seasons in Africa, see the springtime blooms in North America, and wildfires scorching forests worldwide.
3. Like Breathing? Thank Earth's Ocean
Tumblr media
But land is only part of the story. The ocean is home to 95 percent of Earth's living space, covering 70 percent of the planet and stretching miles deep. At the base of the ocean's food web is phytoplankton - tiny plants that also undergo photosynthesis to turn nutrients and carbon dioxide into sugar and oxygen. Phytoplankton not only feed the rest of ocean life, they absorb carbon dioxide - and produce about half the oxygen we breathe.
Tumblr media
In the Arctic Ocean, an explosion of phytoplankton indicates change. As seasonal sea ice melts, warming waters and more sunlight will trigger a sudden, massive phytoplankton bloom that feeds birds, sea lions and newly-hatched fish. But with warming atmospheric temperatures, that bloom is now happening several weeks earlier - before the animals are in place to take advantage of it.
4. Keeping an Eye on Crops
The "greenness" measurement that scientists use to measure forests and grasslands can also be used to monitor the health of agricultural fields. By the 1980s, food security analysts were approaching NASA to see how satellite images could help with the Famine Early Warning System to identify regions at risk - a partnership that continues today.
Tumblr media
With rainfall estimates, vegetation measurements, as well as the recent addition of soil moisture information, our scientists can help organizations like USAID direct emergency help.
The view from space can also help improve agricultural practices. A winery in California, for example, uses individual pixels of Landsat data to determine when to irrigate and how much water to use.
5. Coming Soon to the International Space Station
Tumblr media
A laser-based instrument being developed for the International Space Station will provide a unique 3-D view of Earth's forests. The instrument, called GEDI, will be the first to systematically probe the depths of the forests from space.
Tumblr media
Another ISS instrument in development, ECOSTRESS, will study how effectively plants use water. That knowledge provided on a global scale from space will tell us "which plants are going to live or die in a future world of greater droughts," said Josh Fisher, a research scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and science lead for ECOSTRESS.
6. Seeing Life, From the Microscopic to Multicellular
Scientists have used our vantage from space to study changes in animal habitats, track disease outbreaks, monitor forests and even help discover a new species. Bacteria, plants, land animals, sea creatures and birds reveal a changing world.
Tumblr media
Our Black Marble image provides a unique view of human activity. Looking at trends in our lights at night, scientists can study how cities develop over time, how lighting and activity changes during certain seasons and holidays, and even aid emergency responders during power outages caused by natural disasters.
7. Earth as Analog and Proving Ground
Just as our Mars rovers were tested in Earth's deserts, the search for life on ocean moons in our solar system is being refined by experiments here. JPL research scientist Morgan Cable looks for life on the moons of Jupiter and Saturn. She cites satellite observations of Arctic and Antarctic ice fields that are informing the planning for a future mission to Europa, an icy moon of Jupiter.
Tumblr media
The Earth observations help researchers find ways to date the origin of jumbled, chaotic ice. "When we visit Europa, we want to go to very young places, where material from that ocean is being expressed on the surface," she explained. "Anywhere like that, the chances of finding biomarkers goes up - if they're there."
8. Only One Living Planet
Today, we know of only one living planet: our own. The knowledge and tools NASA developed to study life here are among our greatest assets as we begin the search for life beyond Earth.
Tumblr media
There are two main questions: With so many places to look, how can we home in on the places most likely to harbor life? What are the unmistakable signs of life - even if it comes in a form we don't fully understand? In this early phase of the search, "We have to go with the only kind of life we know," said Tony del Genio, co-lead of a new NASA interdisciplinary initiative to search for life on other worlds.
Tumblr media
So, the focus is on liquid water. Even bacteria around deep-sea vents that don't need sunlight to live need water. That one necessity rules out many planets that are too close or too far from their stars for water to exist, or too far from us to tell. Our Galileo and Cassini missions revealed that some moons of Jupiter and Saturn are not the dead rocks astronomers had assumed, but appear to have some conditions needed for life beneath icy surfaces.
9. Looking for Life Beyond Our Solar System
In the exoplanet (planets outside our solar system that orbit another star) world, it's possible to calculate the range of distances for any star where orbiting planets could have liquid water. This is called the star's habitable zone. Astronomers have already located some habitable-zone planets, and research scientist Andrew Rushby of NASA Ames Research Center is researching ways to refine the search. "An alien would spot three planets in our solar system in the habitable zone [Earth, Mars and Venus]," Rushby said, "but we know that 67 percent of those planets are not inhabited."
Tumblr media
He recently developed a model of Earth's carbon cycle and combined it with other tools to study which planets in habitable zones would be the best targets to look for life, considering probable tectonic activity and water cycles. He found that larger planets are more likely than smaller ones to have surface temperatures conducive to liquid water. Other exoplanet researchers are looking for rocky worlds, and biosignatures, the chemical signs of life.
10. You Can Learn a Lot from a Dot
When humans start collecting direct images of exoplanets, even the closest ones will appear as only a handful of pixels in the detector - something like the famous "blue dot" image of Earth from Saturn. What can we learn about life on these planets from a single dot?
Tumblr media
Stephen Kane of the University of California, Riverside, has come up with a way to answer that question by using our EPIC camera on NOAA's DSCOVR satellite. "I'm taking these glorious pictures and collapsing them down to a single pixel or handful of pixels," Kane explained. He runs the light through a noise filter that attempts to simulate the interference expected from an exoplanet mission. By observing how the brightness of Earth changes when mostly land is in view compared with mostly water, Kane reverse-engineers Earth's rotation rate - something that has yet to be measured directly for exoplanets.
The most universal, most profound question about any unknown world is whether it harbors life. The quest to find life beyond Earth is just beginning, but it will be informed by the study of our own living planet.
