2/22/24: The Mindsweep by Enter Shikari

This album cracks me up, honestly. It's alternative rock with a little bit of electronic rock and hardcore punk mixed in. Most of this album really fails to capture me; none of the songs are very interesting or catchy all the way through, and while the style has some twists and turns it's like doing so in a plain; you're in grass, take a sharp turn right, walk for a mile, and you're still in grass. Turn 180 degrees, walk two miles, and, you guessed it, still grass. In short, this album is grass all the way 'round.

It does have its moments, though. The part of 'Myopia' with the change in the guitar sound and the chanting is nice. 'Torn Apart' is overall a relatively okay song with a good chorus and a surprisingly striking contrast with its instrumental continuation/counterpart 'interlude', which may have been my favorite part of the whole record. The horns really add some character and some storytelling. I will also admit that the drop in 'Dear Future Historians…' does go pretty hard, it's probably the most interesting riff in the album.

The part of this album that really made it much more tolerable were the lyrics. They're very much extremely explicit anti-establishment punk stuff, which I respect immensely, but for whatever it per reason when this British man sings them I just cannot take them seriously. They're just so cheesy, and I don't know why. My favorite line is probably "the invisible hand no longer guides, it chokes", from 'The Bank of England'. Honestly, go off Enter Shikari, I can feel capitalism quaking in its boots. The comedy I find in this album is not helped by stuff like the stock airhorn sound effect in 'There's A Price On Your Head', or the goofy speech that opens the album. Parody is always closer than you think, and this album is not afraid.

For the sake of this, I'm ignoring anything I already mentioned in the Scouting, Intelligence, Fortunetelling, and General Manipulation based asks. Because I feel like a lot of those could apply here as well.

Well, for this, it depends on what you want them to analyze. There's "Weak Point" to help point out the flaws in others, "Hindsight" to analyzed flaws after they became an issue, "Gene Study" to study others via their genetics, "Bio Focals" to study people in general, "Mindsweeper" to analyze people on a emotional level, "Aim Assist" to help them analyze the battlefield" "Psychometry" to help them understand objects, "Operator" to understand the workings of machines, and "Inner Voice" to make all their comments and analysis everyone else's problem.

It seems wrong to me to have written about music yet not have mentioned my favourite band of all time, Enter Shikari, and what better way to introduce you all than with arguably my favourite album of their discography (though honestly, I have at least 3 from them they’re all so good). The Spark is a work of art that I’m certain has something in it for everyone. The classic shikari sound of guitars, drums, and heavy synth is as always complemented by Rou Reynolds’ fantastic vocals, having a noticeable upgrade from previous albums in design and production. The album grabs you immediately with the soothing tones of the title track, just to launch you to space (get it) with “The Sights”. Each song on this album is a 10/10 for me, from slower pieces such as “An Ode to Lost Jigsaw Pieces” and “Airfield”, to the higher octane “Rabble Rouser”. Rou’s lyrics once again strike a chord with me as in previous hits such as “The Mindsweep”, and “A Flash Flood of Colour”, though the leftist messages are certainly more discreet than in previous entries. The pumping synthesizer compliments the guitars perfectly leading to head-bouncing, dancing, and very chantable choruses. “Live Outside” is a constant part of any self-respecting party I take part in, and it’s always been met with a greater than warm reception. I cannot recommend The Spark, and Enter Shikari’s greater discography, more aggressively, and I implore you all to listen to these masterpieces.

So I had an idea for a number six/nine style villain based on the infinity gauntlet, obviously you couldn’t cover everything each stone is capable of with a quirk but I’m more interested in a theme rather than breaking the system of quirks, so could you assign a quirk to each of the infinity stones.

Could any of the Stones of Power from Kid Cosmic function as a Quirk?

Obviously, the Infinity Stones are so broad that you'd be hard-pressed to have them work under one power. So for this, I'll give two options for each stone, with either one covering some of the more common usages of the power. Do note I'm not thinking of any particular synergies with this, just trying to make the most fitting matchups possible.

Power is the easiest of all the stones to work with. "Purple Heart" works for the generic energy beams and "Repose" can work with energy empowering the user's body.

Space boils down to moving stuff. "Move" lets you move stuff through the air and "Doorway" let's you do all the portal stuff the stone is more known for.

Time can't really work in the setting, but you can replicate it, either by freezing space with "Slow Down" or speeding up and slowing things down with "Flow Motion".

Mind is another easy one. "Mindsweeper" can go with the general mind reading powers and "Polymath" fits with the general increase in mental capabilities.

Soul is a little tough given what it can be mean, "Aromatherapy" can fit with influencing emotions and "Insight" can reflect the kind of knowledge they get on people.

Reality is the hardest one to work with. "Delusion" can fit with some of the weird stuff it does and "Dreamcatcher" is about as close as you get to reality warping, and even then it's just a shared mental space.
