By the way, the inspiration for this was a Shen Yun performance, and I swear this Jia Tolentino article was hammering in the back of my head the whole time. It's a good article, but it also made me think about how America has been the refuge of weird splinter religions from the start---and most of whom in the 20st century have used media to conduct outreach. For example, there are ads in '30s pulp magazines for the Rosicrucians' LA branch; the Moody Bible Institute had phenomenal (decidedly creationist) school science videos in the 50s; in the 60s and 70s Pat Robertson (rest in fucking pieces) had CBN and The 700 Club which in turn led to the founding of American-Catholic tv station EWTN. I'm not even getting into the big names objectively associated with "cults", like Heaven's Gate, which leveraged the web as early as the 90s.

Yesterday, paging through the program brought me to an ad for the online "Shen Yun video platform" which feels like a rhyme on all that's come before. I mean, is there anything more quintessentially American than a sleek slick snake oil salesman, trading on all the religion and nationalism we've left lying around?

(Even just the concept of "snake oil" has its roots in American-Chinese-Native relations; one of the first cases the FDA took on was puncturing Clark Stanley's claims that beef fat and turpentine were "Native American" medicines.)

Afterwards, I went home and watched a bunch of youtube videos about Chinese dance: different variants of Mongolian biyelgee, the Yi's flower dance, even some beautiful Uyghur performances, because it came up on my feed and I was fascinated. Ironically, that led me down a rabbit hole---through First Nations/Native American rap; Latvian choral singing; Yemeni Jewish pop music; Chilean fusion. Maybe a song or two from The Hu to round it out.

All this to say....smart is for children, curiosity is forever, and also people should keep making music, writing articles, and doing things, because for good or ill---nothing on this earth is more fascinating to be around.

I do think that my seemingly limitless interest in the world is my best quality. I have other good qualities probably! But I am always, always deeply fascinated by the world and everything in it, such that even a lackluster dance performance can inspire thoughts about making a living as an artist and the creation/performance of identity and communicating meaning as a political act, plus a couple hours spent watching videos of folk dances to try and clear my palate.

now that we have season 9 will they won't they buddie confirmed i feel it's only right to share with you my vision of the buddie wedding. the original ceremony is derailed of course. probably by some sort of big emergency that neither of them can resist helping out with. and they go home at the end of the day sweaty and sooty and exhausted. and buck is rambling on and on about how they're cursed and doomed and they should stay engaged forever because the universe clearly doesn't want them to get married. and eddie is just really fucking fond of his silly little guy and he needs to be married to him yesterday so he's saying yes dear whatever you say dear as he creates a new groupchat with all of their family minus buck and he gets to organising. and crucially buck has no idea what's going on. the morning of their next shift eddie heads in early without him and buck is wondering if they really are doomed and he gets into work all bummed and sniffly because he was supposed to be a husband today. eddie's husband! and he's not :(. but the station is weirdly quiet and empty. and bobby's waiting for him in the locker room with a dry cleaning bag and he says. hey uniform change for today. and buck looks inside and it's the suit he was supposed to wear. and he looks up at bobby with big wet eyes slowly realising what's happening and bobby nods at him and tells him to go get ready in his office. and buck's struggling with his tie when maddie ducks in and takes over and they have a little cry together because they're both so happy and she links their arms and takes him up to the roof. and chimney's leading jee-yun down the aisle as she throws rose petals everywhere. but all buck can see is eddie and chris waiting for him at the end of the aisle. and eddie is crying and buck is crying again. and chris is so embarrassed but he's so happy too. and maddie walks buck down the aisle and gives him a kiss on the cheek as eddie takes his hands. and buck whispers. you did all this? for me? and eddie just nods a little too choked up to speak, speaks anyway. needed to prove curses weren't real. and buck scoffs and rolls his eyes but he's smiling too big for it to mean anything. and bobby asks them if they're ready and they're both more ready than they've ever been. the ceremony ends with bobby having them sign their marriage certificate then update their personnel forms. tim if you're reading this after a glass of wine please know i forfeit all rights to this idea. it's yours. i don't even need credit.

It was gonna be one point, but he just kept popping up, and even when I thought we'd get a break from him, NOPE he's back in the next scene 😮‍💨

And you know that those fans were happy, but I'm not one of those fans. Quite the opposite actually. So much so that it kept taking away from my enjoyment of the episode, and I enjoyed this episode quite a lot actually. So yeah, -2 points.

The Wilson's and the Buckley-Han's dressing like Wizard Of Oz characters 😍😍😍, the firehouse being a haunted house✨🤩✨, Bobby being a goofy CAP Dracula 😂🧛😂, Eddie being a Wolf Man that NO ONE was scared of 😂🐺😂, Buck realizing the "fake" dummy was actually a corpse and possibly traumatizing multiple children for life while ALSO getting cursed 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣, the very real drama of Karen being upset that Hen was missing out on parts of their kids growing up (that thankfully they were able to talk about in this episode instead of dragging it out) 🥺🥺🥺, Athena trying to be hip with the kids 😂😂😂, the two girls who weren't paying attention in the CARE class finally getting some sense knocked into them 👏👏👏

Also the incredible build up of Chim recognizing Jee-Yun when she ran over to him excited, seeing Mara with her, realizing they went trick or treating together with Karen and Denny, not seeing Karen OR Denny with them, to Hen noticing Karen is on the scene of the accident but doesn't look hurt, to freaking the fuck out when she realizes Denny is the one pinned by the car!!!! *Chef's Kiss* *Chef's Kiss* *Chef's Kiss* *Chef's Kiss* *Chef's Kiss*

(though I will say I don't like how the promo spoiled it being Denny. I mean the whole thing was still amazing don't get me wrong, but I feel like it would've hit harder if we didn't know beforehand and were making assumptions that would just so happen to be correct. But again, that's a promo thing not an episode thing)

Also finding out that Denny pushed Mara out of the way and saved her life 🥺💖🥺💖🥺💖🥺💖🥺💖🥺 And I even like how the show had Chim bring up the fact that you're not supposed to work on people who you're close with, ie Hen trying to save her son's life, and they gave us the excuse for why they were doing it with Bobby saying "You wanna be the one to pull her away from him?" That's 👏 How 👏 You 👏 Fucking 👏 Do 👏 It 👏

Ugh, this episode was so fucking good. I had so much fun watching it, and it felt like I hadn't had that much fun in a long time with this show. I can't really remember but I don't think we had any "fun" episodes last season. We've had episodes with fun moments, but no true "fun" episodes like the Ocean's 9-1-1 episode, or the Treasure Hunt episode, or the Karma episode (minus the cheating storyline), or the Jinx episode, so honestly this was a VERY welcome and pleasant surprise 💖💖💖

I was thinking about taking off at least a half point for the dad who got the pumpkin stuck on his head cause why not cut it off and why not fully empty it before putting it on, but decided not to cause they did end up cutting it off, and having the pumpkin guts falling around his neck might've been part of the thing he did with his kids, idk. So that gets a pass ✨

The only problem I had with this episode was Temu, and if that's it then it was a damn good episode. Can't wait to see what's next!!! See y'all next week 😘✌️✨

Mating season for Yun?!

That's right~

Summer is Yun's mating season, its the time when he often ran to Ifrit to escape Ra's rays. This was always meant to be because in his past life as Bright One, summer time was also his mating season and it made sense for Hope to shine so brightly as he did. Not to mention it explains why most of his children are born around spring.

It's also normal for Hell Dragons' mating season to last three months but during that time, it is also when they are at their most dangerous (minus omegas/females having young around) because the 'alphas' the kings/queens basically of the groups, will kill any intruder on their land and feed them to their mates to increase better chances for a child. For Yun, this means that unless you are someone special to him outside of his intermediate family or is his mate, he is going to be in a far more murderous mood.

Eddie is a shitty best friend. At least in this episode. You know he has abandonment issues and you really thought he wasn’t going to be hurt by you leaving? Yeah he needs to accept it but you could’ve also taken a few minutes to talk to him about it all instead of just steamrolling through the process assuming he’s fine when you know his history. THAT PROVABLY WOULD’VE HELPED HIM ACCEPT IT SOONER! No you aren’t responsible for his feelings, but you could at least consider them. An effort goes a long way. Just a small conversation of “hey I know you aren’t good with goodbyes so I just wanted to check in and let you know you mean something to me” was all you had to do. Buck is better than me. I’d be petty as fuck! He does shjtty things sometimes but it seems to be in response to things that hurt him. Then he apologizes and does a grand gesture, and gets no “hey I’m sorry too for hurting you even though I didn’t know I was hurting you”. He just lets the shit roll off his back. He moves on and tries to learn from it while everyone else (minus Hen) just acts like it was a lesson for Buck to learn and they don’t need to grow so they didn’t need to learn anything or even say I’m sorry. This makes me wanna write angry fanfiction. Okay I think the rant is really over now.

Back in the early-mid 90s, 2D fighters ruled the gaming scene thanks to the popularity of Street Fighter 2. Many popular franchises such as Darkstalkers, King of Fighters, and Fatal Fury emerged in this golden age of 2D fighters. As time went on, the popularity of the genre dropped around 2001, and the gaming scene saw fewer and fewer 2D fighting games being released. It seemed that the only developers who cared about developing 2D fighters anymore were Capcom, SNK, and a newcomer to the 2D fighting genre Sammy. Sadly, Capcom also began to fall off around this time after the release of a few big-name titles like Capcom VS SNK 2 and Street Fighter 3 3rd Strike. While they did release a few rehashes on consoles such as SF Anniversary and Darkstalkers Chaos Tower, they seemed to have strayed away from the once popular 2D fighting arena. Back in 2004, Capcom announced Capcom Fighting Jam (Evolution in the US) and once again fighting fans were excited at what they thought would be the next big thing in 2D fighting. So now that CFJ is here, does it live up to Capcom's amazing past efforts?

The concept of CFJ is a simple one. Take several characters and their play systems from 5 different Capcom fighters and blend them all together. The games represented here are Street Fighter 2, Street Fighter Alpha, Street Fighter 3, Darkstalkers, and the obscure Red Earth/Warzard. As I mentioned, each character has their play system from their specific title. Street Fighter Alpha characters have their custom combos, while Darkstalkers have their chain combos and EX moves, and so on. While this sounds like a great concept, wouldn't you have rather had a system similar to Capcom VS SNK 2 where you could choose from 6 different play systems per character? Also, Capcom lies on the back of the package about this, by claiming the characters play exactly like you remember. Strange, I don't remember Ryu ever having a "super dragon punch" in any of the SF2 titles. Also, where is Chun Li's SF3 super where she did the kickflip? Capcom seems to have removed it. It also seems some of the old combos for some of the characters are nowhere to be found either.

For characters, you get a total of 23 with at least 4 per title. Representing SF2 are Ryu, Zangief, Guile, and Bison. For SF3 its Chun Li, Urien, Alex, and Yun. Darkstalkers has Jedah, Felicia, Demitri and Anakaris. The Red Earth crew has Leo, Hauzer, Kenji, and Hydron. For the SFA team, there is Guy, Sakura, Rose, and Karin. There is also an extra character called Ingrid who was from the canceled 3D title Capcom Fighting All Stars. Finally, there are 2 hidden characters to be unlocked as well. The first is the final boss Pyron who comes from Darkstalkers, and the 2nd is Shin Akuma from the SF series. In all, 23 characters may sound like a lot, but you can't help but get the feeling there should have been more. I feel at least 7-8 characters per game would have served the game much better, esp since all but one is a recycled sprite. Perhaps even a special boss representing each title, rather than just a single one from Darkstalkers.

As I mentioned, gameplay for each character is pretty much the same as it was for their original titles, minus a few moves and combos for some of them. The draw here is that you can pick 2 characters. No, this isn't tag team play like in Capcom's VS series, but rather you have the option of changing characters when the round is up. While this is a nice little option, it feels a little tacked on and I feel the game would have been better off with a tag team feature.

For play modes, you only get 3. This whopping 3 modes includes an arcade mode a VS mode, and a training mode. No survival, no color edit, no single play.... nothing. Come on Capcom, I've seen the cool mode and options you've done in the past with titles like SFA 3 and SF Third Strike, surely you could have put a bit more than this to give the game some more replay value.
