It is known to have a reflective abdomen that plays a crucial role in their camouflage to protect them from predators in the forest canopy. The scales look like solid pieces of mirror glued to the spider's back, but they can actually change size depending on how threatened the spider feels. Mirror Spider (Thwaitesia argentiopunctata)

These christalline wonders may catch your eye, hiding on foliage in the tropics of Australia and Singapore. Measuring only three or four millimetres in length, the glimmering mirror spider is a particularly stunning species of comb-footed spider which is common, easy to find if you're looking closely enough.

The most notable feature of this spider is the sequin-like spots on its back. These spots are likely cristalline deposits found beneath the spider's cuticle, composed of an organic compound called guanine. This compound is in fact a waste byproduct of the spider's digestion, created by specialized stomach cells called guanocytes. This camouflage may seem too conspicuous to be effective at first, but actually works quite well in wet, tropical areas, where the spider takes the appearance of raindrops sparkling in the sun. If threatened, mirror spiders have the ability to contract muscles at the top of their abdomen, allowing the thin skin of the gut to hide the silvery crystals on their abdomen.

Mirror spiders, like other comb-footed spider species, have a preference for weaving tangled webs in undisturbed areas. Their family name stems from the series of bristles, called setae, forming a comb on the tarsus of their fourth leg. Like most other spiders, they are technically venomous, but are unable to harm humans.

Cool Facts- True to their name, mirror spiders appear to have reflective patches on their abdomen. These silvery patches are actually scales that increase in size when threatened by a predator. This shimmery defense protects spiders from birds and lizards, the bright coloration causing confusion. Mirror spiders are web builders, catching small, flying insects. They are venomous but it's bite is only as harmful as a bee sting. As with all species of spiders, mirror spiders play an important role of pest control in their home turf of Australia.
