Autumn Reading List 2023
Sorry, it has been a while since my last post. Long story short, I caught COVID-19 and was bedridden for a spell and I am still dealing with the aftermath. I usually have the energy of a hungover sloth so it has been worse since. I still struggle to breathe a bit even now and even have occasional bouts of vertigo. The first time it struck was terrifying, I had never experienced that before and…

If I had a dollar for every horror book I read this year (that was also published this year) in which a conservative cult used powers beyond mortal ken to enforce their conservative agenda onto a bunch of queer and neurodivergent children who then turned that power around to decimate the cult at some point in their lives, I would have two dollars, which isn't a lot but it's great that it happened twice.
Anyway, read Camp Damascus by Chuck Tingle and Mister Magic by Kiersten White.

Better Know an Author: Kiersten White
Today on the site, I am absolutely thrilled to be chatting with powerhouse author Kiersten White, whose newest novel, Lucy Undying, releases tomorrow from Del Rey! Lucy Undying is gloriously lush and Gothic lit fic that travels between past and present (slash near future) telling the story of Dracula‘s Lucy Westenra, and before we get to my chat with the author, here’s a little more about the…

"as the years passed, the fear didn't fade, but she grew into it. grew around it. grew stubborn and strong-willed, ignoring the shape of the fear at the core of her. and even though she wanted to know, needed to know, how her mother died, she wasn't going to ask. not ever."

"Your favorite childhood television program feels like a fever dream. You don't remember it at all until I start humming the theme song and then--oh, I can see it in your eyes. The wash of images, ideas feelings."

Review: Mister Magic by Kiersten White
Author: Kiersten WhitePublisher: Del ReyReleased: August 8, 2023Received: Own (Aardvark) Find it on Goodreads | Aardvark Book Summary: For as long as she can remember, Val has lived on a horse ranch, where she and her father have lived quietly. Granted, saying “for as long as she can remember” doesn’t mean much, not when she lost most of her childhood memories. As it turns out, once upon a…

𝕄𝕚𝕤𝕖𝕣 𝕄𝕒𝕘𝕚𝕔 by Kiersten White (website)
⭐⭐⭐⭐/5
Pub Date: August 8th, 2023
I love creepypastas and r/nosleeps, so this story immediately drew my attention with similarities to the creepypasta Candle Cove. Instead of a group of strangers reminiscing on a children’s show that may or may not have existed, however, it’s a reunion of the last set of child actors. There’s a kind of cult classic feel to the hype for the show, as people seem to remember it but they can’t quite remember exactly what they watched nor can anyone find evidence of it online. It’s a mystery, and so once word gets out about the last cast getting together to do a podcast about the show - it’s all over the internet. This book does a great job of bringing that feeling into it - it includes blog entries, discussion boards, wikipedia articles, etc - with the rest of the world’s opinion and feelings towards Mister Magic and the cast reunion. I loved this, as it really brought a sort of “reality” to the novel. It’s not just the main character or the previous cast who are both obsessed with the show but also can’t quite remember anything specific that happened - it’s the rest of the world too. It really gives a solid foundation to the almost eerie feeling of this show that was a part of everyone’s childhoods - but yet no one can find evidence of it online.  If you, like me, read Candle Cove and wanted more out of it - I recommend this book. It’s obviously not the same as Candle Cove, but it incorporates a lot of the things I loved about that creepypasta into this novel, all the while still being its own unique experience.
[Thank you NetGalley and RandomHouse Ballantine for providing me this ARC for an honest review.]

Been in a book fugue for a few days. Somehow Kiersten White went from a mid tier YA writer with a debut I didn't hate but didn't love either to having written TWO of the best adult horror novels I've read this year??? Like, HIDE is great, angry novel and I want a miniseries. But I finished her latest, MISTER MAGIC, on the bus home yesterday, and I'm having so many feelings about the trap of nostalgia and stolen futures and not just religious but community trauma and found family and the choices we have to live with and and and. I am less than okay and I would like to read it again for the first time right this minute and shoot copies out of a canon and into the hands of everyone I know.
