2022 MOVIE OF THE WEEK #26
Tumblr media
do revenge. oops i did not realize that i posted my next movie out of order this was in my drafts and should have been first. i had no idea this movie even existed, despite it starring two actresses i genuinely love, until i read a profile of sarah michelle gellar completely randomly a day or two before it premiered. the interview made it seem like a next-gen cruel intentions, complete with her playing a character ‘who could be katherine, what she’s like today’ as the headmaster.
and when she first showed up in the movie, it really did take me back--she slipped, as well as anyone could be expected to decades later, right back into That Katherine Voice. she chose this movie as part of her return to acting, and she really seemed to be enjoying herself, so i’m happy for her.
i was also happy for me, because cruel intentions was very important to me as a teenager, and there’s something about her in this movie that just hits me hard that way--she delivers a line at one point about what it’s like to be seventeen, and there’s just so much intensity to it, so much she puts into that one line, where she didn’t have to. it resonated with me, like, this isn’t just the headmaster talking to a student...this is sarah michelle gellar, who was buffy, who was katherine, who was a scream queen, who brought our teenage dreams and fears to life. i just really enjoyed the sort of depths that live in her now, that she wanted to use to make this movie better. because she’s only a small part of it, but she’s a really fun part.
so anyway, i went into this knowing vaguely about her role, and the two leads, and otherwise i just knew it was a netflix movie. that can be REALLY hit or miss these days, there are still some i like but more of them lately are not what i would call good. i was prepared for this one to suck, and to have fun watching it even if it was a bad movie dramatizing bad behavior by rich kids.
but it was surprising! i did not expect maya hawke to play another gay character, and she is a delight always but honestly i love her best queer because while she was great as jo march, i met her as robin and i mean, robin is my netflix icon. that is a measure of my fondness for her. i’m not sure what i expected from camila mendes, she showed off her range on riverdale so i know she can do anything really--but she does play a believable self-absorbed mean girl.
the beginning of the story confused me occasionally so it’s definitely a better time if you can watch it uncritically and go with the flow. a couple days after we saw it, i ended up putting it on again, as background noise while i was cooking, and that time it was a lot more fun because i wasn’t trying to make things make sense.
for example, when it opens on a party, we spent most of the scene debating whether the movie was set in the 90s, or if it was a 90s themed party, or if style had just looped back around so all these teens were heavily influenced by it. and i still don’t understand why, if you trusted your boyfriend enough to send him explicit photos, you would assume immediately that he leaked them when they got out, while he claimed he didn’t do it. i know that it’s not relevant to the plot because he couldn’t have proved otherwise, but i genuinely don’t get that early moment, because if i had trusted someone i would give them the benefit of the doubt.
this review is already too long so i won’t go into the plot much more except to say that as @actuallylukedanes and i were watching it, i kept mentally guessing what was coming next, or we would discuss what we thought the answers to the movie’s mysteries would be...and every time i expected this movie to go one way, it went another. i don’t think i guessed a single thing right, even when in a few cases i had caught their breadcrumbs at the time and thought ‘huh, what we’re being shown doesn’t quite fit.’ that was really refreshing. i enjoyed being surprised.
the movie’s not flawless. at a certain point it moved so quickly from the final showdown to its happy ending that it didn’t totally feel earned to me, though that didn’t stop me from enjoying the ending. maya hawke’s performance after the reveal gave me a moment where i saw her fierce uma thurman inheritance shining through, in a way i never have before, which was awesome--but in a different scene i felt like she was tonally borrowing from killing eve’s villanelle, so it was hard to get a good grasp on her.
was she always at risk of being unhinged and a traumatic event triggered it? did she react rationally to a horrible experience and it’s fine because ‘teenage girls are psychopaths’? in the end we don’t really know, because her counterpart doesn’t care so we’re not supposed to either. blowing so quickly past her actions because they face a greater villain together may make sense for them, but i still have questions! lol.
beyond the performances (sophie turner is living her best life in this it’s fantastic) and the fashion, one of the very best parts of this movie is the music. MY GOD, the music. leander pointed it out before i noticed, but the ‘90s tunes that they mix in between modern artists is just...chef’s kiss. from a song off my favorite hole album to a joyful rendition of bitch to a full-on cruel intentions callback that made me hold my hands over my heart like i was trying to keep a teenage version of me from spilling out...this has a truly excellent soundtrack.
in the end, i appreciate the way that this movie clearly knows what it wanted to be, flaws and crazy and all. the people behind it made choices and then really went for them. i respect that, even when i don’t always like their choices. i would mostly recommend it though--for me, it was a good time.

MS. KROGER: Oh, so you live with another woman. BUFFY: Oh! Oh, it's not a, a gay thing, you know, I mean, well... (Ms. Kroger has noticed the box full of magical stuff to be thrown out. She picks up a plastic baggie containing some herbs.) BUFFY: ...she's gay, but, but we don't ... gay. Not that there's anything - (she notices Ms. Kroger looking at the herb) BUFFY: Oh! Wrong with... (rushes over) You know, I know what that looks like, but I, I swear, it's not ... what it looks like. (Ms. Kroger looking shocked) BUFFY: It's *magic* weed.

Note
Fucking Jeff Davis got Buffy herself Queen Sarah Michelle Gellar for his Wolf Pack show. Sorry Cole but the man knows how to draw attention specially from the gays. I expect badass Sarah moments and lots of shirtless hot guys.
I expect nothing. Jeff doesn't like other people stealing his shine, so there's bound to be issues. Sarah is a gay icon, but Jeff is not.

any trash songs that are dear to you, dr. fudge? especially that go well with trashy ships hehe
sorry for replying eons later
well, this question has the power to truly Expose™ me on the first day of Christmas, but… here goes nothing
i think ppl expect me to respond with something like “tear you apart” from she wants revenge, which is a great song! but i’m afraid i’m going to have to take you back to the ye olde days and show you what really embarrassing, early ‘00s trash sounded like.
first, a few concessions:
trash by suede and poison by alice cooper are 80s/90s classics of the “you’re bad for me but i can’t help it” dynamic. but they’re too classy for this list. there’s not gonna be any Divine on this list, no 80s late-disco jams, no “west end girls” by pet shop boys, no britney doing “toxic” or “momma i’m in love with a criminal”, no christina aguilera wrestling in the mud while singing about being “dirty”, no baz luhrmann-esque “lady marmalade”. that’s all great. it’s just not this list.
you also won’t find any my chemical romance, panic at the disco, evanescence, papa roach, marilyn manson etc. because they weren’t part of my trash experience. i mean they were there in the background, i was aware of them (and who hasn’t watched edits with “bring me to life”? don’t lie…)… and they’re kind of similar to what i have here, but they weren’t the trash i was particularly attuned to (plus, manson can choke).
some other exclusions: i remember the original p&p edits back in 2005 had all of these “cuz there’s you and me and all other people” songs that were really wonderful, cheesy, shippy songs. but that’s…not this list (although that would make a great list too! remind me to do that one too!)
i once got a message about how “mr. brightside” by the killers would make a great song for a bonkai edit, and…i like the killers just fine, and that’s a great song, but…no. this list ain’t that.
the trash here is not trash on purpose, it’s not tongue-in-cheek, it’s not a “steamy hot mess”, it’s just…really bad and angsty and earnest and totally committed to the “no one understands me (but you)” vibe that a lot of early ‘00s trash ships fostered.
okay…let’s…shame…me…:
1. cold by crossfade - back in the late ‘00s, you couldn’t find an anime AMV that didn’t have this song in the background, ESPECIALLY if your male character was a murderous, brooding (secretly soft) boi who disdained the female sex because “feelings are weakness” or something. it was baaaad, but it’s a nostalgic fave.  the whole song is basically about how that arrogant, cold guy who’s shunned you and treated you badly was secretly into you all this time. yeaahhhh. (i remember this song was also popular with m/m ships because you had that classic dynamic where one of the guys was still in denial about his “gay” feelings. god i miss 2006.)
2. vermilion pt. 2 by slipknot - another 2005/2006 era song that capitalizes on the bad guy/good girl trope where she’s too “good” for the brooding antihero, but he can’t help but ruin her. or something. it’s soooo angsty. it has the great, eerie feeling of a doomed romance which was also definitely written by teenagers. i love it.
3. i hate everything about you by three days grace - obviously, you can’t leave out the big dick energy song.
4. anything by nine inch nails’ 2000-2010 period, but especially “fragile” and “we’re in this together now”, because they’re very much trashy power couple aesthetics, but also aaaaangsssst. “fragile” always cracks me up because it’s basically that one direction song about how the girl doesn’t know she’s beautiful, except it’s alternative rock and trent reznor is screaming about how he has to save this beautiful, pure soul from the corruption of the world. (for anyone expecting “closer”, that’s a great song…but i said real, embarrassing trash).
5. vampire heart by HIM - because OF COURSE. 2006 me was LIVING for Vampire Hunter D AMVs. that iconic line “love me like you love the sun” POETRY OKAY. another fave line has to be “you can’t escape the wrath of my heart”….like, whew, what a badass.
6. hate me by blue october - AAAANGST. aaaaaaaaaangst. maybe the apogee of late ‘00s cheesy alternative rock. but probably not. there’s always one that goes harder. this list, unfortunately, is 90% this genre because they really SLAPPED when you put them together with trashy ships okayyyyy there was an innocence and earnestness that the ‘post-9/11 iraq invasion’ atmosphere really captured.
7. let me go by 3 doors down - see, i was wrong, THIS is the apogee. “you love meeeee, but you don’t know who i aaaaaam” belts the lead singer of this oft-forgotten band aaaaand 15-year old me screamed yaaaaaaaaas
8. pieces by sum 41 - WRONG AGAIN. IT’S THIS ONE. the anime AMVs…my god….i can even tell you, beat by beat where the angsty edits happened depending on the breaks in the song.
9. sour girl by stone temple pilots -  “bad” boy waxing about how he’s ruined a good girl? check. super Extra lyrics that go “what would you do? what would you do if i followed you?” check. sarah michelle gellar/buffy being a dark goth muse for the tormented bad boy? triple check!!
10. hold me, thrill me, kiss me, kill me by U2 - i meaaaaaaan. it’s in the title. 10-year old me WAS LIVING. this is THE batman song, and if there’s a god, it will be featured in the upcoming robert pattinson movie. ppl wanna say this song is more of the “trash on purpose” variety, but i don’t think so. i think joel schumacher plays this dead straight (and “batman forever”, while being one of the cheesiest movies ever made, takes itself extremely serious).
11. insatiable by darren hayes - finally breaking away from the alt rock scene a bit for this one. ppl who are now trying to make this song “respectable” and classify it as sweet 00s nostalgia are WRONG. everything about this song is convoluted and overly wrought and pitch perfect, even the fact that you would never believe that this waspy blond dude in the music video has anything to do with the actual song.
12. behind blue eyes by limp bizkit - don’t look at meeeee. this is basically a meme song. the band itself turned out to be dumpster fire and fred durst is…blehh. but this song stiiiiiill slaps, i have the courage to say it.  the video definitely helps, i mean u got that trashy dynamic of prisoner/guardian @___@ and halle berry @___@. half-naked fred durst kinda ruins it, but it’s still got its charm.
13. i have to include some linkin’ park songs here at the end and i’m choosing the ones that were trashiest to me and that’s gotta be “one step closer” and “somewhere i belong”  because they were always juxtaposed with villain/heroine ships in edits, and i remember fanfic authors would use them in songfics. “in the end” and “numb” are waaaayyy too classy.
additional “kinda too good for this list” rec:  the entire Queen of the Damned soundtrack, but especially “slept so long”, “system” and “before i’m dead” and really ALL the songs.
this disaster list could definitely go on (i’m sure u guys can pitch in. and hey, i might be persuaded to do part 2) but imma stop here before i lose my last shred of credibility on this website lol. k byeeeeeee

Cruel Intentions
Tumblr media
Cruel Intentions was the most forbidden movie my 11-year-old brain could possibly imagine. 1) it was all about sex 2) it starred teenagers and 3) those teenagers’ motivations were just right there in the title. I didn’t see it in full until I was 25 years old. It was re-released for its 20-year-anniversary and I was curious to see how well it held up, both as an artifact of the 90s and as relevant to today. Does it live up to the dark, sticky legacy my 11-year-old self could have imagined? Well...
I hate to say it but...no? The half that has aged fine has aged fine. No real additional layers of meaning or transformative commentary in the past 20 years have been added. But the half that has aged poorly has aged really fucking poorly. While there are moments of truly inspiring cinema to be found here, this sordid tale of high school seniors betraying and fucking each other has no real central hero or villain to root for or against, which makes it kind of a convoluted mess.
Quick plot summary for the uninitiated. It’s summertime for rich assholes in New York City, and Sebastian (Ryan Phillipe) makes a bet with his stepsister Kathryn (Sarah Michelle Gellar, relishing every minute) that he can get the new student starting at school, self-avowed virgin and all around good person Annette (Reese Witherspoon), to sleep with him before the semester starts. But uh-oh, over the course of his deception, he falls in love with Annette for real and can’t deflower her. Until he does anyway? But it’s for love. And he’s still kind of an asshole and terrible person. And then he dies and everyone finds out what a bitch Kathryn is and The Verve makes $20 million because everyone’s new favorite song is “Bittersweet Symphony.”
Some thoughts:
As an artifact of the 90s, you can’t get much better than this. The tiniest sunglasses that do NOTHING! The pastels! The sheer blouses over spaghetti strap tank tops! Even this font in the credits looks 90s. The nostalgia is THICK with this one.
And this soundtrack is excellent through and through. *puts on repeat on Spotify*
What happened to Sean Patrick Thomas? Between this and Save the Last Dance, he was my ultimate ~artistic~ dreamboat guy of 1999. I just saw him in The Curse of La Llorona where he was woefully underused. I need a Sean Patrick Thomas renaissance, stat.
Oh shit, and Tara Reid! Oh what a terrible crier she is here. But I suppose that’s to be expected with her awful mother who is a psychologist and slut-shaming her own daughter when she knows what an asshole Sebastian is.
Sebastian is so insufferably full of himself that it’s frankly nauseating BUT I will say, watching him make fun of Christine Baranski is pretty funny.
Sarah Michelle Gellar is honestly the most flawless and iconic part of this movie because it’s clear she’s having so. much. fun.
It’s confusing when every film and tv show uses 20-something actors to play teens but if they’re starting school in the fall that means Sebastian and Katherine both are maximum 17? And he’s meant to have slept with this many girls already? Bullshit. Have you met 17-year-olds? Especially before Instagram and YouTube were a thing? Give me a break.
Way to throw around a shitton of gay slurs, wowie wow 1999 how I did not miss that. Plus the whole “closeted gay guy has Barbara Streisand cds” thing...god I’m glad we’ve moved past that, not because the joke is offensive, but because it’s just about as funny as saying “Women like cats.” It’s not even a punchline, that’s just you saying a sentence.
I literally can’t believe we’re supposed to root for Sebastian at any point in this movie when he made a bet in order to buttfuck his stepsister.
Selma Blair is overacting like hell in every scene she’s in, but she’s having nearly as much fun as SMG, so I’ll allow it.
And even though I’m obviously so into the #iconic scene giffed above, the way two girls kissing is filmed makes it seem like THE most voyeuristic, salacious thing which is pretty gross.
Why would you put perfume on before you get into a pool, Annette??
SMG’s monologue about unfair pressure for girls is LEGIT. This is probably the only scene in the movie, where she describes how much pressure she’s under to be the perfect little lady even though she’s smart and driven and actually likes sex, that has aged really well and feels very relevant to today.
Um...did Sebastian just get a girl drunk and commit sexual assault? Yeah, that really cancels out SMG’s female empowerment monologue up above like what the snail-sucking FUCK.
The line “But I have theater tickets!!” is the funniest goddamn thing in this movie.
Can we talk about how it makes no sense that Annette likes Sebastian at all? They have nothing in common, and he treats her like an idiot most of the time when he’s not gaslighting her SO HARD. Is it the mystery? Girl, buy yourself a Nancy Drew book, because he’s not fucking worth it.
Ok but “Colorblind” is still an amazing song, damn. And the lighting in this love scene between Annette and Sebastian is incredible. But why are they so sweaty when they’re doing it? And again, why is she into him in the first place???
I can’t believe Sebastian thinks giving Annette the journal will solve things. Who reads this and says “yeah this guy gets a pass”???
Who is this person inciting a riot at a funeral?
I love that we realize what everyone is reading when people start looking at Kathryn and doing the slow head shakes. And why should we be happy about Kathryn’s comeuppance when Sebastian never really proved that he had changed and did all this fucked up stuff too?
I don’t think I realized how nonsensical this movie was in its goal of being ~scandalous~. I feel like I have whiplash between one scene and the next. You hate Sebastian, then he’s kinda dreamy, then he’s a rapist, then we’re meant to sympathize with him because he laughed ONE TIME? Each individual scene is good, but all together they make no real sense. Still a banging soundtrack tho.

i watched weird science today and i accidentally made a sylena au
so elena alvarez is a nerd. she’s unpopular. there are reasons for this.
she doesn’t have a lot of social skills, and she’s really smart and she doesn’t really know how to interact with people, especially cute people like syd that she really likes. she’s exactly the way that she is in the show but while she’s still the same forceful and idealistic personality she’s a little more insecure about it and more science-y
she stumbles all over herself and it’s just not a great situation. so her useless gay ass thinks. i am good at science. i would like a girlfriend. what can do? well, why not just make one?
of course, as a feminist, she mulls over the ethical implications of creating a person to date more than two teenage boys in the eighties do, but in the end, she decides that yes, she is that desperate.
so she throws buffy the vampire slayer, okoye, wonder woman, social activists, geniuses, and more badass lady icons into a computer program to try to create her perfect girlfriend.
instead she creates herself a very hot, very protective fairy god mother who just wants to find her love and happiness and give her baby gay mentee advice and would never sleep with her tiny gay ass . elena is disappointed, of course. she wanted a girlfriend. she can’t exactly get one herself. she’s not good with people! that cute person syd would never look at her twice if she tried to talk to them! elena can’t talk to people she likes! she’s a useless lesbian! absolutely useless!
but fairy godmother hot lady (who either looks like ramona or sarah michelle gellar circa her daphne days, take your pick) sets up a party and a chance to talk to syd and possibly, if we’re getting really crazy, save syd from demon biker people.
and elena talks to that cute person she likes and realizes that maybe if she gave herself a bit more credit, she would have been alright to begin with. fairy gay mother disappears in a puff of fairy dust and fixes the house.
elena is VERY glad that she fixed the house. she doesn’t know what she’d have done if after the first time her mother trusted her to stay home alone for two days she completely destroyed the house.
also if you haven’t listened to weird science the title song you have to right now. it is a required part of this post

sarah michelle gellar or lili reinhart? eliza dushku or camila mendes?
Oh definitely SMG sorry Lilli you’re real cute but not on that level. Ooohhhh that is literally an impossible choice…I have to say I’ve seen more of Eliza’s acting and she’s a permanent obsession for me and a Gay Icon to be sure, but Cami is a little bit hotter IMO. They’re both really hot though this was a tough one lmao
