there's something so ironic & almost poetic, for a lack of better words, about how the song that plays when katniss boards the plane in mockingjay pt 1 to go visit district 12 after it's been destroyed, is the same song that plays when coriolanus walks to the academy on the first day in the ballad of songbirds and snakes.
katniss' song - remind her who the enemy is
coriolanus's song - coryo in the capitol
and the enemy (snow) is being molded during his time at the academy and esp during the time that he's a mentor. he gets influenced by someone like dr gaul, who lays down a type of moral guide for him as she passes down her own beliefs and ideals to him**, while he also continues to hunger for money and power (without being influenced), both of which contribute to his decent into the villain we know him as.
*i've linked below a post i made about the significance of coriolanus and dr gaul's name and how it contributes to their dynamic!

Suzanne Collins is one of the few contemporary writers who realizes the importance of names in her stories and the significance they bear. They add so many layers to the story, additional meanings that otherwise would not have existed.
The original trilogy:
Katniss: named after a plant of which you can eat the roots. Her father taught her where to find it and told her that “as long as you can find yourself, you’ll survive” (quote may be a little bit off, but it’s from one of the early chapters in THG). Additionally, the leaves are in the shape of an arrowhead, referencing her skills with the bow which her father also taught her how to use.
Peeta: literally bread lmao. But bread is one of the basic nutritions humans need, a little bit goes a long way to keep you alive. Peeta’s presence in Katniss’s life also kept her alive, literally and figuratively—the burned bread he threw her in the flashback and their complicated relationship.
Primrose: a plant with medicinal purposes, even more significant in light of her work as a medic in Mockingjay.
Gale: literally means “strong wind” and considering that in every encounter with Katniss he’s caused some reaction, he pulls her into directions she maybe initially doesn’t want to go in. Additionally, his name also represents his determination and steadfastness in his beliefs.
TBOSAS
Lucy Gray: named after William Wordsworth’s poem “Lucy Gray” which is about the titular character of the poem who got lost during a blizzard. She literally got lost in snow. Rachel Zegler sang this poem in two parts on the original soundtrack of the movie. When Snow asked who the girl in the song is, Lucy answers that she’s a mystery, just like her.
Snow: aside from the obvious snow references, I think his name is most significant in relation to Lucy and the poem. The only one who knows what caused her disappearance is Snow. He is the reason that Lucy is gone. But her traces in the snow are still visible. He will always remember her because the memory of Lucy has manifested itself in every part of his life.
Coriolanus: named after the Roman general (and also the titular character of Shakespeare’s play), Coriolanus wanted to attack Rome and become its ruler. He was scorned and celebrated by the people, only to be later exiled from the city by them. In TBOSAS, Coriolanus is the star pupil at the Capitol’s academy but sent into exile to the districts after he won the Games with Lucy through cheating.
Volumnia: Coriolanus mother who played a part in his ascent to power. In TBOSAS, she almost serves like a mentor to Coriolanus, teaching him how to think in terms of power.
(Edit) Sejanus: a roman soldier who was betrayed by the roman emperor Tiberius, just like the future president betrayed him.
(Edit) Plinth: got this info from here, but it was too good not to include here. A plinth is a base for a statue or vase to stand on. After Sejanus’s death, all of the Plinth fortune was given to Snow for being such a good to friend him. It was this money that skyrocketed the Snow family from poverty to filthy rich. The Plinth money was the foundation upon which Snow built his power.
There are so many other names that have historical (mostly Roman and Greek) connotations—Plutarch, Seneca, Cinna—but also regular names like Trinket and Beetee bear meanings that represent the character beautifully.
Names are important. For any lover of literature or (aspiring) writers, please look closely at them. They can shape your story into something unique.
Feel free to correct me if I’ve said something wrong. I know there are many names missing, but I can only add so many examples ✊🏻😔

as an 18-year-old, 2006 baby, most of my fandoms were in their prime long before i was even cognisant. i mean, merlin had finished by the time i had just started school, superwholock was thriving away as i obliviously flicked from the ludicrous image of matt smith dancing away in the tardis to sherlock babbling away to john on the bbc, and even by the time i'd hit secondary school, i was left with the tail ends of pretty little liars. i can just remember so desperately binging the entire show at the ripe age of 11, just to catch the shitty season finale and exactly on time for the enraged twitter afterparty. living like this, i've somewhat made peace with the fact that i am a sort of fangirl-archaeologist, sifting away happily through the dusty ruins of once great and mighty fandoms and finding the occasional relic hidden - fantastically written fanfiction.net smut hidden amidst the rubble of mid 2010s jhutch whistle edits.
however, bitter as i am, nothing - and i repeat - *nothing* has given me such enraging, all consuming FOMO as the ballad of songbirds and snakes.
picture the scene. its 2020. a young, 14-year-old tisha has just finished the hunger games trilogy. she adores it, and to her luck, the brilliant suzanne collins has decidedly published a prequel just as she tucks mockingjay away, back into her bookshelf. perfect timing, right? i just remember the feeling of 'i cant wait to read it!' battling away with 'except it's covid so i cant' and one of my friends had pre-ordered it anyway, so i was determined to get my hands on a copy as soon as lockdown was over.
except, after lockdown finished, came gcses and after gcses finished came a levels and it was then, amidst personal statements and entrance exams and oxbridge applications that *it* came out. the ballad of songbirds and snakes: the fucking film. i was long out of my hunger games phase; i dont think i considered even quickly flicking through the novel before going to the theatres. im a purist like that - book before film always - but i just didnt have time to read it and so, completely oblivious to the fact that i was alive and concious, missing the hunger games renaissance when every other teenager was obsessing over tom blyth and making fan edits of rachel zegler and listening to the soundtrack on repeat, i decided to save the book till after a levels.
and what a fucking mistake.
the fact that i could’ve revelled in the prime of tbosas fandom in live time and been there at its peak!!! and that i fucking missed it???? everyone i knew watching that masterpiece play out in theatres and now, i have to sit and listen to you all reminiscing about november 2023 not knowing what that felt like, envying the fyp full of coriolanus snow edits and the fresh off the cut late night interviews with the cast that you all got to experience. in fact, the movie has aged just enough to be declared a ‘phase’ by everyone that was there in at its peak. and its driving me up the wall, because the worst part of all this is i have no one to talk to share my burning obsession with, knowing well, that 11 months ago, half the internet would’ve happily shared it with me.
so please, tbosas fans, if there are any of you still active, if you empathise with the plight of listening to ‘cant catch me now’ on repeat whilst pretending to be lucy gray - lets be mutuals. please.
-a girl going slightly insane.
(on a side note, i have sincerely learnt from my mistakes and will not, by ANY means, be leaving sunrise on the reaping to the last minute. i just hope its as good as tbosas!!!! in suzanne collins, we trust!)

i was listening to glory and gore by lorde and i was like "OMG THIS IS SO TYT NICO IF HE WROTE AND PERFORMED A SONG FOR THE HUNGER GAMES!!" and was like really excited about the idea (cause i think nico would love to be on the hunger games soundtrack) until i realized that he already released glory and gore 😭
LMAOSDF NO BC NICO 100% WOULD LOVE TO BE ON THE HUNGER GAMES SOUNDTRACK. i do have a hc that he wrote yellow flicker beat for tbosas (bc i made can't catch me now an alex song i feel like it fits her) (yes i know yellow flicker beat is for mockingjay but hear me out it matches tbosas as well) but who knows... maybe whatever song comes out for the upcoming hunger games book/movie will fit him even better!!

Just listened to “Can’t Catch Me Now” by Olivia Rodrigo (I’m OBSESSED with her), and as it is the only song (as far as I know) in the soundtrack released from the movie “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” (which comes out November 17th, I can’t wait!), which is an adaptation based off of the prequel of “The Hunger Games”, if you didn’t know.
Spoiler under the cut, cause this song is literally just *chef’s kiss*
If you haven’t read the series yet, you should.
First of all
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
youtube
There’s the song.
Second,
Can we take a moment to appreciate this song?
Like, it describes the book, like perfectly.
I’m literally going to a deep examination of this song and point out every single reference to the book. Peeps who’ve read the book can add stuff.
“Shadows of us are still dancing
In every room and every hall”
Olay, I don’t think Snow and Lucy Gray ever danced in the book, but this feels like a direct reference to the fact Lucy Gray was a performer, and SHADOWS OF US.
Their broken relationship, obviously.
“There’s snow falling over the city
You thought it would wash away”
Now, a normal person wouldn’t think anything of that, but I, am not a normal person.
Direct reference to “Snow fall on top” !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And then, in the trailer and the book, Dean Highbottom is like “Do you hear that? It’s the sound of snow falling” or something like that.
“The bitter taste of my fury,
And all the messes you’ve made”
Do I really need to explain this one?
Snow’s just messed up.
“Yeah, you think you got away
But I’m in trees, I’m in the breeze
My footsteps on the ground
You’ll see my face in every place”
LUCY GRAY AND HER MOCKINGJAYS
LUCY GRAY AND HER MOCKINGJAYS
Also “Wordsworth’s Lucy Gray”
“But you can’t catch me now,”
I don’t know if this is a reference to “She could fly around District 12 all she liked, but she and her mockingjays could never harm him again” which is Snow not being harmed by Lucy Gray.
Or, if it’s Lucy Gray not being able to get under Snow’s words and lies anymore, and he can’t hurt her anymore either.
“Through wading grass, the months will pass
You’ll feel it all around
I’m here, I’m there, I’m everywhere”
Wading grass gives me “Deep in the Meadow” vibes, and the months will pass is like, even though it’s been months, years even, Snow’s guilt will be there. He might not show it, but it’s there.
Lucy Gray’s haunting him.
“Bet you thought I’d never do it,
Thought it’d go over my head”
Okay, so here, it’s like, where Lucy Gray is hiding from Snow. She could’ve ignored the signs pretend that she didn’t know, but she chose to show that she knew, because that is Lucy Gray Baird.
“I bet you figured I’d pass with the winter
Be something easy to forget
Oh, you think I’m gone cause I left”
Lucy Gray lives on in District 12, through her songs. Not her name, but her songs.
“You can’t, you can’t catch me now
I’m coming like storm into your town”
This is more in the beginning of the book, where Lucy Gray comes to the Capitol. She made a giant impact, in my opinion, especially with her reptile show.
“You can’t, you can’t catch me now
I’m higher than the hopes you brought down”
Obviously, Lucy Gray’s just better, and Snow is… certainly something
“There’s blood on the side of the mountain,
It’s turning a new shade of red”
Lucy Gray disappearing after we presume Snow shit her, which might’ve caused her death.
“Yeah, sometimes the fire you founded
Don’t burn the way you expected”
This definitely feels like a reference to the OG series, you know “catching fire”, “fire you founded”.
It definitely feels like Snow had something to do with sparking the rebellion, and it got out of hand. The Hunger Games, especially the 75th one, was to prove the Capitol controlled the districts, but the rebellion was sparked because of the and tore it down completely.
“Yeah, you thought that this was the end.”
It wasn’t. You know, Katniss and the rebellion. The mockingjays really could hurt Snow again.

Just got out of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and I loved it so much but as always, I have thoughts and feelings. So here's the initial observation. FULL SPOILERS for The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes BELOW you have been warned.
First of all, I loved the way they organized it and the fact that they kept the 3 acts clearly defined the same way the books did, and the opening scene is brilliant. Putting it at the forefront like that gives you all you need to know to understand Corio later. The acting is phenomenal, the songs (I could die). All in all, kudos. Absolutely brilliant. Now to the things I wish they had done differently.
First, changing the sequence of events in the arena. I understand we're on a time limit but there are details that to me, reading the book, I felt were too important not to put in. Examples below.
One: the fact that Lucy's poisoned water does not kill Wovey, only Dill. Don't get me wrong, they both get the point across and the fact that Lucy is in fact responsible for someone younger and weaker than her dying, but I feel like in the films, they established this stronger connection between Lucy and Wovey in a couple of scenes, including them holding hands as they walk into the games, and Wovey being killed by that bottle would have really pushed things in a way I would have liked to see.
Two: the way they changed Reaper and his behavior and his ending. What I loved about Reaper in the books was his defiance in silence. Everything he did for the tributes he did without ever saying a word, which in my opinion was more powerful than when he yells in the films, but that's a minor detail. What I didn't like was that he was killed by the snakes and we don't get to see Lucy use his graveyard and the flag against him, doing that little cat and mouse dance until he dies. His death in the movie was shot beautifully, with his arms wide, sitting among the dead bodies he compiled, poetic as fuck, but give me the book death because it says so much about both his and Lucy's characters.
Three: this is a more minor detail but I wish they hadn't changed the way Lysistrata handles Jessup's death and his rabies. Instead of her offering to save Lucy by sending all this water, it's Coryo who suggests it out of the blue and Lys doesn't like it.
My second issue with the film is that I felt act 3 was a little rushed in its storytelling. We get all the events for the most part but I felt like they were running out of time and trying to cram everything that happens in these last 45 minutes. For example, we see them hunting the Mockingjays but we never get an explanation, we never understand what they're doing (for viewers who have not read the book). And because of that, we see so much less of this hatred that Coryo has for the mockingjays that is so well set up in the book. We also get the results of Snow's aptitude test out of the blue as well. I wish we had gotten a little more insight into the life that he and Sejanus led for a bit to contextualize everything and to help us connect even more. Even Sejanus' exclusion from the trip to the lake and the relationship with the Covey made me a little sad because those moments in the books helped make the separation and realization of "betrayal" if you want to call it that even more poignant. It helped us see how truly selfish Coryo is and his lack of connection with anyone in that part of his life.
Third, I wish we had seen him throw away his mother's compact and his photos of his family and only keeping his father's compass as he leaves District 12. That moment in the book was so important for me. We see him becoming more like his father and throwing away the things that remind him of his mother and Tigris who were the kinder people in his life.
Anyway, this was a long rant about things that popped into my head while I was watching. The film is absolutely brilliant and I didn't want it to end and I want more songs and soundtracks and I'll definitely be rewatching it when I can.

I don’t know if you care for the hunger games at all BUTTT with the new movie out I’ve been thinking
Hange would have totally played Katniss early in her career and I think Sasha would have been a good Lucy Gray from the new movie :)) I’m also thinking gojo for young Coriolanus just cause of the blonde hair and blue eyes lol
OH AND yn would’ve defffff sang “can’t catch me now” by Olivia Rodrigo from the soundtrack of the new movie
omg ANON THE HUNGER GAMES WAS MY ROMAN EMPIRE. I had to put a read break cuz I rambled
two unsolicited ronnie stories to prove it:
when I was in seventh grade, I bought a mockingjay necklace from hot topic and wore it to school. but I went to private school and wasn't allowed to wear necklaces like that. and when my teacher asked me why I wore it, I looked at her straight in the face and said that "I was the mockingjay"
I used to be in orchestra when I was in middle school and there was one year where we got to vote on the song we played. so naturally, I stood up and I was like guys...there's this really underground song idk its called the hanging tree. and it litearlly won but then I took it ten steps farther and made us all do the whistle together and the little salute when we finished because naturally, I am dramatic. I am unfortunately never beating the weird kid allegations
that being said, THERE'S SO MANY GOOD HUNGER GAMES FANCASTS. this was the one I had in mind (but I love yours too!!) + it's the one fancast I chose to include in my ACTUAL fic (towards the end chapters, so we'll see this one come back)
original trilogy
yuuji as peeta mellark, duh. our beautiful boy with the bread
y/n as katniss
gale you are a lame, sack of bones. so obviously floch.
ceasar flickerman is CONNIE SPRINGER YUP
levi as haymitch
hange as effie, obviously
finnick is jean
mikasa is annie (they are soulmates everywhere I fear)
annie is johanna mason and I think that bertholdt would be a really good betee
erwin plutarch heavansbee that one wrote itself
gojo is seneca crane 😭, heavy on that one scene where hes like everyone loves an underdog 😃 and president snow is like no.
nobara is playing the extras that are part of effie's prep team or just someone in the capital you will not catch her being one of the tributes
YELENA SCARY BITCH IS PRESIDENT COIN
ballad of songbirds and snakes
utahime as lucy gray baird
young gojo as president snow (the entire press is utahime saying she vomitted after she kissed gojo as a joke and people think its real)
suguru as sejanus :((((((
shoko as tigris snow (says having to be nice to gojo during the scenes was her personal hell)
alternate (from the fic)
this is the one i'm including in the fic!
y/n and yuuji, true to the original, play katniss and peeta
(megumi and eren are the most supportive boyfriends to boyfriend)
gabi plays lucy gray baird
gabi gets to write eyes open for the original trilogy
y/n writes you can't catch me now for the ballad
they are mother and daughter your honor (can you tell im so excited to unleash my gabi yn dynamic in the next chapter)
