Happy August! TOA is now officially five years old. None of the mods had this milestone in mind five years ago, but now that we're here, how about another five years?

Housekeeping

Current Month in TOA: Lone Moon

This month is event month, so there will be no new mission board! But like last year, the June & July Mission Board will be extended to run through the end of August. The Unaffiliated requirement remains in effect for the Unaffiliated & Faculty-specific tasks.

The event will run from August 1st to August 31st. Signups are now closed - stay tuned for more information tomorrow at noon EST!

Our monthly submission limit on the site that hosts our event signups has been reset so everyone is free to take the quiz for fun now.

We will be announcing a second 5th-Year Anniversary activity on August 4th and another on August 8th. This will not require IC participation. Stay tuned for the details.

Please don’t forget to leave feedback on our feedback poll for this month! We do check the responses regularly, so if you have concerns during the event, the feedback poll is an appropriate place to pop in. Alternatively, the mods’ DMs are always open. We're wiping the Wanted List this month so our character wish list will be fresh for the new year.

Important Updates

The requirements to master a lord class acquired for participation in an event have been updated. You cannot master the class with the same event that you acquired it, but any official event afterwards (Arena, Ethereal ball, etc.) can count for its mastery

We are changing our event schedule for all subsequent years: there will now only be ONE Arena event per year, not two, and it will be held in November. Originally, the biannual Arena design was implemented to rigorously test the combat manual, which was brand new at the time. Now that the manual is more or less stable, we've decided that two Arena events is no longer necessary. Because we already had an Arena event this year in June though, the next Arena won't take place until November 2025.

TOA runs a lot of events, and it makes it difficult for our members (and the mods) to have a life outside of TOA or reply to regular threads in a timely manner. Many of our members also have great ideas of their own and have expressed interest in running their own mini events during the year, but there just hasn't been a good time for them when TOA has a big event every other month. We hope that removing the second Arena will give everyone some breathing room.

I know neither umineko nor the somnium files, would you recommend playing either one/both?

Umineko

Umineko is a masterpiece but extremely long and deals with some very triggering subjects

My friend Al made this helpful trigger warning post for it

It's the best murder mystery I've read and has interesting things to say about family, trauma, magic, & more. It has an incredible premise (is magic real? If magic isn't real how did these impossible murders happen?)

Incredible characters, incredible music, great art (in different styles depending on which platform you play on, if u get it on steam I recommend using 07th mod to add in voice acting & choose whichever art style you prefer)

It's one of the best stories I've ever read and I do recommend it but please read the trigger list and make an informed decision for yourself

Somnium files

This game has an interesting gameplay mechanic where you use a machine to enter suspects' dreams to gather clues, and you have to solve puzzles using dream logic to unlock people's secrets

It also has branching story paths, is a fun murder mystery, and has interesting characters.

The music's great, the art is great, story is decent (I much prefer the sequel, but recommend playing AI: the somnium files first for context)

But.... The protagonist Kaname Date SUCKS. He's annoyingly horny all the time and it kills the mood of scenes that should be serious. He has some nice heartfelt moments but most of the time he annoys me so much.

The humour also sucks a lot of the time. 1/3 puns, 1/3 sex jokes, 1/3 referential humour that was localized awkwardly. Some of it is funny but some of it falls flat.

BUT

Mizuki is delightful! She's one of my favourite characters and I don't want to say too much to spoil her storyline

If you can make it thru the first game , she's one of two protagonists in the sequel.

I still think it can be a fun game to play (I've played it 3 times!) but it's nowhere near the same level of storytelling as umineko

Umineko is pure visual novel (no gameplay) and the somnium files games are hybrid games (part visual novel, but there's puzzle gameplay and minimal quick time events in fight scenes)

Zero escape

I think the zero escape trilogy (by same creator as somnium files) is far superior

The first game 999 (you can buy it bundled with its sequel on most platforms under the name Zero Escape: The Nonary Games) is my favourite visual novel ever after umineko.

It's half visual novel half escape room puzzles! It has a fantastic story, music, art, and gameplay! Kaname Date isn't there!

These 9 people wake up in a series of escape rooms on a replica of the Titanic that is slowly sinking and will be underwater in 9h. They have to find the exit, find out who put them here, and try to make it out alive in 9h.

I believe at this point, it's really hard to enjoy Super Mario 64 by its own merits anymore. Impressive for its time, but as the first of its kind, it really has not aged well, especially with the visual shortcuts, the camera, and the abundance of glitches. At this point, people only talk about it because of the speedrunning, little details, and modding community. Also, I'm one of those freaks who enjoys the DS version more, mainly for the extra characters and the closest we'll ever get to a proper 3D Yoshi game (outside of the pitch that eventually became Croc).

When it comes to roleplaying, I prefer practicality over pizazz. I don't like it when people use atypical characters, fonts, and formatting for the sake of fancy.

I actually wouldn't mind more Fire Emblem reps in next Smash. While I'm predicting Alear to make it in Smash 6, I feel like the issue with Fire Emblem in Smash isn't the amount of characters, but how many of them are clones. Lucina and Chrom being Echo Fighters make sense because they're part of the same family (Marth's descendants), but Roy has little excuse outside of Binding Blade having similar plot beats to Shadow Dragon and Melee's crunch development. And if I had to pick a better GBA Fire Emblem rep, it would be a tie between Hector and Ephraim.

FE lords play the Town of Us mod. there was one round where Alear kept accidentally killing ppl via veteran alert to the point they were begging people to vote them off. but the swapper kept swapping their votes to keep them alive

that same game they finally got got but the altruist managed to successfully res them. they were altruisted again the next round by the imitator. altruisting Alear has become the new "kill Ephraim first every round"
