You were old when we were colleagues and that was thirty years ago . . . I'm sorry to hear of your death, JF, you were a true original and I apologize for saying "colleague" when we were friends. I guess I can't help but think you must have been embarrassed to have had a friend like me.
The age you were then is the age I am now.
I knew you were a legend but I think we became friends because I did not treat you like a legend and curtsey too much in your presence.
Sometimes we would eat dinner at Wendy's. Once, a local there told me to to watch my language because he was there with his kids. You said you were proud of me for not telling the local to fuck off. That was as close to the language of mentor-mentee as we ever got.

When I was off to CA we kept in touch here and there (you were jovial enough about the realities of moving into the retirement home about seven years ago today) but, in the face of my own health crisis and then my grievous problems with the kind of work you excelled at, I let go of the rope that held me to the past—including my conversations with you.
You never called or asked after and me but I am sorry for how that went—I should have had the courage to say goodbye when I left.
The last time I saw you was in 2009 and the last time we corresponded was five years ago when you asked "where are all the single seniors who were supposed to be chasing after me?" I am grateful for some of the valuable lessons I learned from your example (asking "why?") and if I lost the taste for certain kinds of work-related friendship I never lost respect for your intellect. I will leave the encomiums to the officials and the memories to those who knew you better but I did want to say, what a great run, JF. Cent' anni!

Congo is silently going through a silent genocide. Millions of people are being killed so that the western world can benefit from its natural resources.
More than 60% of the world's cobalt reserves are found in Congo, used in the production of smartphones.
Western countries are providing financial military aid to invade regions filled with reserves and in the process millions are getting killed and millions homeless.
Multinational mining companies are enslaving people especially children to mine.
•••

Someone needs to do an analysis on the way the Kung Fu Panda movies use old-fashioned vs. modern language ("Panda we meet at last"/"Hey how's it going") and old-fashioned vs. modern settings (forbidden-city-esque palaces/modern-ish Chinese restaurant) to indicate class differences in their characters, and how those class differences create underlying tensions and misunderstandings.

Andrew Wyeth (PA, USA, 1917-2009)
Miss Olson, 1952
Tempera on panel
Private Collection, currently on display at Brandywine Museum of Art
“Four years after Andrew Wyeth made Christina Olson iconic in Christina's World (MOMA), he created this tender portrait of her. With extraordinary sensitivity to a seemingly straightforward subject—a woman and a cat in the corner of a worn room—he invites us to reflect on the stories this person and place could tell.”
