some spoilery thoughts on s2 since i finished it

• I want to personally thank whoever made the decision to have Kaz go completely unhinged, I loved every second of it

• WYLAN AND JESPER? they had the cutest scenes together

• Patrick did a phenomenal job as Nikolai, i will admit I was concerned over whoever would be casted because Nikolai is my favorite grishaverse character and I was afraid how his personality would transfer over to the show

• Genya. Daisy did an incredible job this season, her performance was stunning. I loved the David x Genya content but I knew it was too good to be true (I know it’s canon but whoever decided to include his death early … sleep with one eye open) 💔

• Pekka is so hateable, the actor is doing a wonderful job portraying him

• I loved the Dregs/Per Haskell reference

• TOLYA AND TAMAR’S ENTRANCE?? HELLO? i actually stopped breathing

• The hallucinations while they were all being poisoned? I burst into tears IMMEDIATELY when Jesper’s mom was there.

• Nikolai’s injury/shadow monster scene had me gasping, I was convinced they weren’t including it

• Nadia and Tamar being hinted at 🥰

• Mogens was TERRIFYING, the way he smelled Inej’s hair …. I got sick to my stomach

• “I’m begging you” “Are you?”

• THE WAY MATTHIAS WAS DREAMING OF NINA. “Matthias was dreaming again, dreaming of her” was the first thing that popped into my head. Plus his little moments with the wolves 🥹

• Jesper and Nina were so funny

• INEJS HALLUCINATION. i screamed so loud my mom got scared. “may I?” I ACTUALLY DIED. plus the tiny wound cleaning scene?? freddy and amita are actually insane. who’s doing it like them-

• Alina’s dark moment at the coronation? what was that about?!?! she looked so gorgeous in that outfit though

• Ben’s line delivery was so hilarious to me, he does such a good job in this role

• We have all six crows! I loved the detail in one of the opening credit scenes with the five crows on the sign and the sixth trapped in a window.

• Literally everything bc this season was so good despite so many complaints otherwise. We’d better be getting s3/soc spin-off or I’ll become so insufferable and upset .

Im going to be at uc Santa Cruz for a few weeks soon, and im worried about antisemitism.

From what I can tell on the news there's an encampment, and the usual antisemitic calls common at protests like globalize the intifada are present. However it doesn't seem nearly as bad as Columbia and such, and I haven't seen any reports of violence. If anyone is at ucsc or knows someone who is, what has your experience been? Is it safe to be visibly jewish there? I wear a mogen david and while I've experienced plenty of antisemitism since Oct 7, none of it has been because of my necklace, at least as far as i can tell. Would it be safe to keep wearing it on my trip?

Dit moet ik misschien even uitleggen.

Koos Speenhoff (1869-1945) was een van de allereerste Nederlandse kleinkunstartiesten/cabaretiers. Als we spreken over bekende Nederlandse comedians is het rijtje basically; Koos Speenhoff, Louis Davids, Wim Sonneveld.

De liederen van Koos Speenhoff zijn in sommige gevallen een paar van de oudste Nederlandse opnames die we hebben!

Anyway, als je op het internet naar deze man zoekt krijg je te horen dat hij razend populair was in zijn tijd (1900-1920 ongeveer) op dezelfde hoogte als Louis Davids een paar decennia later (1920-1940). Hij lijkt gewoon een lieve, schattige voorloper van Daniëls te zijn.

DIT IS NIET WAAR!!!!!!!!! Daniëls is ge-wel-dig, maar Koos Speenhoff hadden we TOEN moeten cancelen én nu! Beide zijn nog niet gebeurd, maar ik ga daar voor zorgen. (Ondanks dat de man al 79 jaar dood is, maar toch.)

Ik kwam de bewuste man op het spoor in mijn zoektocht naar de Nederlandse reactie op de eerste feministische golf. Ik kwam toen uit bij "Spotlied op de vrij vrouwen" uit 1903. We zien hier vrij snel wat voor soort 'feminist' Speenhoff is (ingekort);

"Wat men voor een eeuw niet kende waar men toen nog niet aan dacht 't Is de vrije vrouwenbende 't Is de derde soort geslacht 't Zijn geen mannen, 't zijn geen vrouwen 't Is geen vlees en 't is geen vis Wie met zo'n model gaat trouwen [trouwt met zijn begrafenis (2x)] Een vrije vrouw draagt korte rokken dat je haast haar knieën ziet [.....] Nergens is ze fris en mollig Alles knokig vlees en been Welke man gevoelt zich lollig [Naast zo'n lopend stuk rookvlees 2x] Vrije vrouwen vinden vrijen ouwerwetse flauwigheid Voor verliefde zoenpartijen heeft de vrije vrouw geen tijd [....] Stakkers zijn die vrije vrouwen Waar een man geen steek aan vindt Kijk ze met pakkies boeken sjouwen Liever dan een wollig kind Als men hoort wat zij zich wensen Wat zo'n meubelhout zo zeid' Vragen alle nuchtere mensen [Is 't een bokkie of een geit] 2x[....] Weg met al die houten lijven Waar een man geen greep aan heid Al die halve vrije wijven Zijn de kanker van de tijd Want een vrouw is hier op aarde Het mooiste wat men denken kan Zij geeft aan ons leven waarde [Zij is alles voor een man 2x]"

De overige teksten, ook voor de andere liedjes, moet je online opzoeken want anders wordt deze post wel heel lang. Maar de liederen zijn makkelijk te vinden!

Maar ja, Speenhoff is dus vooral bezig met hoe dom vrije vrouwen zijn in hun absurde wensen voor vrouwenrechten. Daarnaast vindt hij het VOOR MANNEN enorm jammer dat deze vrouwen geen goede/geschikte partners zijn. Dat de vrouwen niet willen trouwen vindt hij maar dom en raar.....

In dat jaar schreef hij trouwens ook nog twee Spotliederen op de vegetariërs, die nog meer bad faith kritiek zijn dan een "Atheist debunks feminist with facts and logic" video uit 2015. "Ja maar als we geen leer meer mogen gebruiken, moeten we dan maar zonder schoenen gaan rondlopen????????" Shut up, loser met het brein van een 15-jarige puberjongen.

MAAR HET KAN NOG ERGER. Als je namelijk dacht dat het bovenstaande vrouwonvriendelijk was, moet je eens horen wat Speenhoff tegen de gewone vrouw te zeggen heeft. Ik citeer "de zeven plichten van de vrouw" uit 1916. Die, voor de duidelijkheid, geen mannelijke tegenhanger kent voor zover ik weet. Mannen hebben volgens Koos geen plichten, maar dit zijn de zeven plichten van een vrouw. (Zoek het lied op, dit is een verkorte, iet wat gestrawmanned versie. Dus zoek het origineel op!)

1 "De eerste plicht van elke vrouw is nooit geleerd te doen." 2 De tweede plicht van elke vrouw is houden van haar man." 3 "De derde plicht van elke vrouw is goed gekleed te zijn." 4 "De vierde plicht van elke vrouw is steeds gehoorzaam zijn." 5 "De vijfde plicht van elke vrouw is manlief toe te staan om zonder haar van tijd tot tijd alleen eens uit te gaan." 6 "De zesde plicht van elke vrouw is zwijgen op haar tijd omdat ze juist ‘t meeste zegt met haar stilzwijgendheid" 7 "De zevende en mooiste plicht is dat ze koken kan."

Ik kan me goed voorstellen dat het lied in die tijd aangeslagen heeft, zo zit er de zin in "Omdat een man die ouwer wordt en jaren is getrouwd, toch veel meer dan zijn eigen buik dan van een oma houdt." Wat grappig hoort te zijn, maar nog steeds de schuld voor een slecht huwelijk bij de vrouw neerlegt, en niet bij de man. Dit narratief van "men are stupid, am I right ladies? now be submissive!" kom je tegenwoordig nog maar op één plek tegen. Namelijk bij conservatieve (Amerikaanse) christenen die vinden dat er maar een recht voor vrouwen moet zijn; namelijk het aanrecht.

MAAR HET KAN NOG VEEEEEEL ERGER!!!!!!!!!

In 1915 schreef Speenhoff "loflied op Professor Bolland". De Nederlandse Jordan Peterson van die tijd, in de zin dat hij een populair professor was die volgens Speenhoff zelfs populair was buiten de collegezalen bij het gehele volk!

Weet je waar Bolland ook om bekend staat...... De teekenen des tijds, zijn laatste college uit 1921 (voor zijn overlijden in 1922). Ik quote voor het gemak even Wikipedia;

"Bolland kan tevens als grondlegger van de fascistische beweging in Nederland worden beschouwd. In zijn laatste academische les De teekenen des tijds (1921) hield hij een fel betoog tegen de democratie (de "gepeupelregeering", p. 12), tegen het jodendom[3], tegen de "tot heerschappij gekomen goddelooze arbeidersklasse" (p. 9), tegen democratisch onderwijs: "de liberaal bedoelde, maar democratisch ontwikkelde, dat is ontaarde, volksschool" (p. 34) en tegen vrouwenemancipatie."

Voor context, in 1914 was het algemeen stemrecht voor mannen ingevoerd in Nederland en in 1918 voor vrouwen! Bolland wilde terug naar de tijd voor 1914 toen alleen rijke mannen in Nederland stemrecht hadden! In 1915 was Bolland misschien nog niet zoooo radicaal als in 1921, maar ik vraag me af waarom Speenhoff het nodig vond om SPECIFIEK voor deze man een loflied te schrijven!

Ik wil deze rant eindigen met een positief voorbeeld; Louis Davids. Toen Speenhoff in de vergetelheid raakte, kwam Louis Davids juist net op. Daniëls was ook niet de meest progressieve man, maar hij gaf de vrouwen in zijn liedjes veeeeeel meer agency (zoals de vrouw in De Voetbalmatch uit 1932 die de gehele voetbalsport belachelijk maakt en de mannen die ernaar gaat kijken als vermaak! of de moeder in "Moeder is dansen" waarin moeder belachelijk wordt gemaakt, maar vader haar drang naar jazz ook heel goed begrijpt in een enge interbellum-wereld). Hij was uitdrukkelijk kritisch op het kapitalisme en de regering (zoals in zijn bekende "De Kleine Man" uit 1929 en natuurlijk "Als je voor een dubbeltje geboren bent" uit 1935 wat nog steeds veel door antikapitalisten als logan wordt gebruikt, verwijzend naar Louis), ook de "welfare queen" helaas komt bij Louis negatief ter sprake (ook in De Kleine Man).

Maar waar Louis Davids vooral goed in was, vooral in vergelijking met Speenhoff, was dat bij Speenhoff de grap altijd was "Kijk naar deze domme nieuwe mensen" terwijl bij Davids de grap altijd was "Lach om hoe WIJ, arme lieden, allemaal proberen te integreren in een snel veranderde wereld." Er werd gelachen met het publiek, niet met een soort derde vreemde groep die wij met z'n alleen kunnen gaan lopen uitlachen....

Davids liedjes zijn dan ook alleen politiek wanneer ze zeer menselijke gevoelens uitten; het idee dat iemand er met jouw belastingcenten vandoor gaat zonder te werken, dat de rijken heer met alles wegkomen en jij niet. Dat soort sentimenten zullen er altijd blijven. Als je naar Davids luistert, merk je ook dat dat maakt waarom zijn liedjes nog steeds bekend zijn en die van Speenhoff niet. Davids is universeel, Speenhoff niet.

DAAROM vind ik dat we Speenhoff moeten cancelen! Ik ben nog enkel negatief artikel over deze man tegengekomen. Alleen maar hoe hij "een pionier was in de Nederlandse kleinkunst" maar NIKS over hoe hij de vrouw weer terug het huis in wilde hebben of het stemrecht weer achter een paywall wilde neerzetten!

Dus. Cancel. Koos. Speenhoff. !.

 I just finished season 2 of Shadow and Bone. What a wild ride of confusion, rage, and elation, guys.

Here’s my thoughts, but first, some disclaimers. If you haven’t watched the show and read the books, major spoilers follow, so beware. Also, though I had some major problems with this season, I did enjoy it overall, so remember that as you read. And if you absolutely loved this season more than anything, that’s cool too. All opinions are welcome here.

Most of this will be about the Crows because they’re the main reason I watch.

Here’s what I loved:

1. Just like last season, the casting and character work on this show was great. For some reason, I wasn’t immediatly sold on Nikolai’s character, but then I loved him to pieces shortly, which I guess is how it’s supposed to be anyway. Also, Wylan was perfect. Double also, I appreciate that this show continues to make Mal actually likeable, which was not always the case in the books. 

2. The visual effects were really cool. We’ve all seen a lot of different shows where characters have elemental magic, and rarely have I seen it look good in live action. But some of those scenes with the amplified grisha at the end made me think, “This is how a person wielding a whirlpool and/or ice shards might actually look if it could happen in the real world.”

3. The David/Genya dynamic was amazing. They were cute in the books, but I think TV David comes across even better. But it’s been years since I read the Shadow and Bone trilogy, so I could just be misremembering there. (Also, pretty much every romantic dynamic has you invested in this show.)

4. The moment at the end when Kaz and Inej see each other safe for the first time after the big battle, and then Jesper runs over and hugs her, while Kaz just has to look away in disappointement with himself. (Also, the final Kaz/Inej scene was very well done.) I always thought these two were the strongest characters in a group of very strong characters in the Crows books, and the show does their characters a lot of justice, even if I’m often left wanting a little more.

5. The dynamic between the Crows is really starting to get to book level, and I love it. 

Things I didn’t love (these range anywhere along the scale of mild disappointment to pointless rage)

1. The Crows just showing up and destroying the amplified grisha at the end. I mean, other than the grenade they threw, those grisha had plenty of time to counter their attacks. They definitely had time to stop that powder from flying into their faces. They could clearly hear Kaz be like, “Wylan, now!” As much as I love the Crows, that scene was a little ridiculous. The Crows can cause some major destruction in the books, but usually when they do they have some more advanced technology and some shadows on their side at least. 

2. When I realized that the Kaz-Pekka Rollins confrontation was going to happen in episode four of an eight episode season, I just about lost it. In the books, that moment is the culmination of two books worth of character development and plotting. And the fact that Inej was the only Crow who wasn’t there to see it just drove me crazy. That’s such a great moment between them in the books, when Inej finally thinks Kaz has lost himself to his revenge, after two books of telling him he’s not a monster, and then Kaz is just like, “Nah, I was just messing with him.” Like, what a relief that was in the books. (Also, I don’t really like that Pekka Rollins is still out there being his usual self, even though he’s locked up. In the books he’s not dead either, but by the end of the story he’s pretty much been scared witless and driven away. Hopefully he and Kaz don’t meet up again in the show because it wouldn’t feel very meaningful at this point.)

3. The Inej-Mogen conflict. It’s clearly filling in for the Inej-Dunyasha conflict in Crooked Kingdom, but it lacks the dynamic that made it so interesting in the books. Dunyasha as a Lantsov pretender (or not) was awesome. Dunyasha really being almost like a foil for Inej was awesome. It also brought in the interesting concept of Dunyasha being Inej’s “shadow,” or the result of all the sins she’s had to commit to survive. Which also brought up the idea of Kaz and Pekka as shadows of one another, and we got to have that great moment where Inej really forces Kaz to think about what he plans for the future, and how he plans to be different (if really at all) from someone like Pekka Rollins if he comes out on top. Also, one of my favorite passages in Crooked Kingdom is Inej’s “we learn to wring magic from the ordinary” moment, about how maybe Dunyasha is some lost princess, while Inej is just a regular girl who’s been forced to deal with the brutal side of the world, but that Inej will fight to get what she deserves anyway. It’s so powerful, and I don’t really think they could have worked it into a TV show anyway, but it still felt like a loss. (Also, as cool as it was to see Inej wielding a legendary magical sword later in the season, it kind of makes that “wring magic from the ordinary” passage from the book ring a little hollow.)

4. The best Kaz/Inej moment in Crooked Kingdom (in my opinion) was attempted, but they couldn’t do as much with it in the show as they did in the books, simply because they weren’t there yet with the story/characters. I think they really should have put off the Kaz trying to help Inej with her first aid scene for later. It was still effective in the show and I liked what we did get. But there’s so much good dialogue and character work there in the books, other than just the romantic tension, and most of it is so wound up with Crooked Kingdom’s plot that it would be hard to transplant elsewhere, but maybe they’ll try. But this was one of the biggest issues I had with this season overall. They tried to hit on so many of the important story and character beats from Crooked Kingdom, but they could never make them hit quite as hard as they do in the books because of the constraints of time/plot decisions.

5. I was sad that we didn’t get to see Matthias join the Crows yet. 

Things I’m still hoping to see, even though they kind of already adapted Croooked Kingdom:

1. The Jesper-Kaz feud. “Who’s Jordie?” Love it. Also, I’m sure we’ll learn more about Jesper’s background, and I’m looking forward to seeing that play out somehow.

2. Kaz in a murderdous rage over Inej’s safety. I want to see this man throw another man off a light house. Judge me all you want.

Random S2 Thoughts (So Far)

tante heleen is dead just like that? offscreen?? i really felt like they were setting her up for something, maybe the actress wasn't available or smth. did put all the focus on rollins, they havent introduced van eck anyway so ig he had to be the big baddie of the season

Genya looks absolutely incredible. her storyline was so well done and i'm so happy with it!

i absolutely adore how the crows (+ tolya) all ate the butterflies and then just. moved on. no "oh my god we ate bugs that's so gross." no "oh and by the way neyar we ate some of your butterflies. yeah sorry we had to it's kinda your fault actually. sorry not sorry"

the way that sometimes inej blesses the people she kills and sometimes she doesnt. like she does the final prayer for mogens death but not the random guard she kills later. amazing

Star of David, Hebrew Magen David (“Shield of David”), Magen also spelled Mogen, Jewish symbol composed of two overlaid equilateral triangles that form a six-pointed star. It appears on synagogues, Jewish tombstones, and the flag of the State of Israel. The symbol—which historically was not limited to use by Jews—originated in antiquity, when, side by side with the five-pointed star, it served as a magical sign or as a decoration.
