This song was included exclusively on the German deluxe iTunes release of Hot Mess, and has never been made available for streaming via Spotify. It's a cover of the song of the same name by the prolific Japanese rock band Godiego, which was originally released in 1978 and was used as the theme for the anime series Saiyuki/Monkey.

I don't think anyone in the band ever shared why they chose a 1970s J-rock/anime theme to cover. It's always been my personal suspicion that this particular song was Ryland's idea, as he's spoken before and since about being a big anime fan, but we can't know for sure!

Summary:

Sun Wuyuan, who wanted the golden hoop, stalked him, and Sun Wukong reluctantly put forward a condition: Sun Wuyuan would become his teacher, and after he completed his studies, he would give him the golden hoop. Unexpectedly, the Bull Demon King secretly instigated Wuyuan to steal the golden hoop and snatched it away. Wuyuan, who hurriedly fled back to the toy world, discovered that the world has been ruled by cows...

Promotional poster for the second DVD box set of "Saiyuki", Vap, November 2006. This TV series adaption of "Journey to the West" was produced by Nippon Television in 1978 and 1979. It was dubbed and broadcast in the UK by the BBC (and later in Australia on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation) as "Monkey" (also erroneously known as "Monkey Magic" due to the English language lyrics of the opening theme song).
