On the subject of minerals/rocks, if naturally occurring ice is a mineral, does that make glacial ice a weird type of regional metamorphic rock?
Thanks so much for your fun question, anon! Apologies that it’s taken the team a little while to respond!
The short answer is, yes! Ice is the crystalline, or solid, form of water - it’s naturally occurring, inorganic, has a definite chemical composition (H₂O), and has a defined and organised crystal structure (as seen below) - so by all accounts, a block of ice is what we would call a mono-mineralic rock!
Tumblr media
Fig. 1: Crystalline structure of ice, or solid water. Doesn’t that structure look familiar? There’s a reason that snowflakes look the way they do, and that’s because of that beautifully organised crystalline structure!
You are absolutely correct in that glacial ice meets all the requirements to be classed as a metamorphic rock, too!
But, why?
Well, we won’t divulge too much as we’ll be talking about the different rock types in our next big post - but for the purpose of this ask we’ll do a quick crash course in sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.
Let’s start with sedimentary basics. When talking seds one of the best ways to imagine your rock is like a layer cake. Let’s say youre making a chocolate and vanilla layer cake. Your chocolate batter represents mud, and your vanilla batter is sand - they each have a different colour and texture. You lay your muds down first, then your sands. You can keep doing this again and again if you wish, until you have lots of layers. Then, you bake! The baking represents the many millions of years it takes for these sediments to solidify into a solid rock (although you technically don’t need heat for real rocks). Do note that in reality it’s not quite as simple as this, there are many things that affect ways that rocks solidify!
Now imagine just a plain old chocolate cake. No frosting or filling. Just chocolate sponge. We layer up the chocolate sponge and bake. Boom, we have a whole unit of just mudstone.
The origins of glaciers are exactly the same, except your mudstone is snow! Lots and lots of snowflakes that have built up over time.
Okay, but what about the metamorphism? Metamorphic rocks start out pre-baked, if we’re using our cake analogy, so we already have our snow layers. Metamorphism of rock occurs either due to heat or pressure - or both. We don’t have heat when it comes to ice, but we do have pressure! Lots of pressure, actually - caused by the weight of all that snow piling up and up. As the weight increases, the ice at the bottom gets squashed which causes the crystals to change shape or recrystallise into ice.
Now think back to our cake. If we kept layering up layers and layers of baked cake, eventually the bottom layer would get squashed, altering the texture and making it really dense. The same thing is happening here! Turning soft snow into hard ice. And then this keeps happening, compressing the ice even more to form glacial ice! Also cool to note that the “texture” of normal ice under the microscope is very different to that of glacial ice!
Tumblr media
Fig. 2: Diagram showing how glacial ice is formed. Note the different texture and size of the "crystals" between the fine-grained and coarse-grained ice! Original image from Let's Talk Science.
This recrystallisation is a really key part of metamorphism in rocks, too, with metamorphic textures being one of the main diagnostic features that geologists use to categorise different types of metamorphic rocks - limestone to marble, for example!
Tumblr media
Fig. 3: Petrographic slide images showing limestone (left) and marble (right) showing the recrystallisation effects of metamorphism. Note how different the shapes are! Marble and limestone are made of the same building blocks (CaCO₃), but have different properties because of this! Original images from Alex Strekeisen's incredible website for all things optical petrography.
Now you can be a cool geologist at parties and let folks know the ice in their drink is technically a rock!
(DekkiiDan does this. Merrydock does this. So does Mohs. We are cool.)
Anyway, hope that answers your question! It was a really fun one, hehe!
See you in the next loop! The OWGS Team

The Midst cosmos is weird, right?
A gravity that spans the entire cosmos, allowing someone to theoretically drop from the Un to the Fold? An ocean of darkness with a mono-directional current? What is the gravitational source? Where does the current come from and go? These questions are not answered with the current cosmic hypotheses you may have seen illustrated in appendices. What if there was more to the cosmos that explained these questions, something that our lovely in-canon scientists have no way of knowing?
(All the credit to @druidposting for churning out these thoughts with me and teaching me about marshes. These theories are as much their brainchild as mine).
Bernhard and Gottle, this is my pitch to join your research team. Say hello to the Theorized Diagram of the Complete Midst Cosmos (a 2d vertical cross-section of the 3-dimensional cosmos):
Tumblr media
You may be surprised. You may be off-put. “What the fuck is this?” is the scientific inquiry you may be posing. Never fear— explanations and mad ravings to be found under the cut
The Three Components of the Cosmos
The three components in the cosmos you see represented in the diagram are the Un, the Fold, and a theorized Un-like space below the Fold monikered as “????” for convenience’s sake.
The Fold’s Gravity
The Fold is the gravitational center of the cosmos— the reason why if a Phineas jumps from the Un, he is pulled down toward the Fold
This is because the Fold is a large enough body of matter that its center of mass has a strong enough gravitational pull to affect the Un
The Fold orbits its center of mass in an ellipse, which explains a) why denizens on this cosmos see its surface as something akin to a flat ocean (it is so massive that it would appear that way without the full perspective) and b) why light and the horizon seem to break down in a location such as the Delta, the point of the greatest bend in orbit
With the Fold being an ovoid, that then creates a hypotheses for an Un-Fold space to exist all around the Fold! After all, the “Un” is simply where the Fold is not. The Un therefore is not just above the Fold, as we already know from Midst-canon, but also below it (above and below are of course relative terms when dealing with gravity, but for ease of communication “above” refers to the top of the diagram and “below” refers to the bottom). This “below” space is referred to as “????” in the diagram.
Though it is important to note that the Un is not empty— it has breathable air, as does the Fold! The primary difference are the microscopic Foldlet molecules that make up the Fold, causing it to be slightly denser than the Un and therefore more amassed around the core
Think of the Fold almost as like a gas-giant planet! A huge source of gravity comprised mainly of a gaseous substance that has huge influence over its surrounding area!
Therefore, to continue this analogy, the Un is essentially the gas giant’s outer atmosphere
The ???? Area
So to recap, ???? is a theoretical area of the cosmos that no one within the canon of Midst knows about. It is similar to the Un in that there is a lack of Fold there.
What is the ???? like? Does it have mica? What does it look like? The unfortunate answer is I do not know. Your guess is as good as mine. Here’s what questions I CAN ANSWER THOUGH:
Why don’t the scientists of the Midst-canon know/theorize the existence of the ???? space? Well, imagine it this way: if you were in the Arctic, and the only way you could get to Antarctica was by tunneling through the Earth’s core, you would probably not know of Antartica’s existence either.
Anyone who would attempt to travel from the Un to the ???? would be forced to go right through/by the core of the Fold, aka its gravitational source. That intense of gravity is not survivable! You’re a pancake now, a pancake who doesn’t know there’s anything beyond this. The red dotted line of the diagram demarcates the known cosmos of Midst-canon.
(Side tangent, this is why the Fold is perceived as something more akin to an ocean in Midst-canon: there’s no way to go through it and see the whole picture that it’s a sphere. Even though the gravitational pressure drastically increases the further down you go into it, that is confused with the Midst-version of deep sea pressure!)
If you WERE to travel to the ???? area, you would still perceive the Fold as below you! That is because the perception of “down” is relative to the direction of gravity, and the direction of gravity is still pointed towards the core of the Fold
The Delta’s Cosmic Purpose
Here is where I ESPECIALLY gotta shout out my amazing co-researcher @druidposting. Mirrorhawk dip’s on me for this amazing cosmological thinking.
The Delta acts as a marsh to the greater ecosystem of the Fold! In essence, the marsh accumulates muck and detritus, but due to their good water outflow they end up serving as an excellent water cleanser— the water comes out on the other side remarkably clean!
That’s what purpose the Delta serves, but instead of water it filters tearror systems
The Fold’s Current
So the Fold flows from the Fount down to the Delta, mucking itself up in the process. The Delta accumulates the sediment of old tearror systems, but also filters the Fold so that it runs pure and clean out the other end
The current essentially orbits around the core of the Fold— once the Fold is purified by the Delta, it circles around until it’s on the ???? side. This newly purified Fold fresh from the Delta therefore acts as the Fount for the ???? side. A reverse Fount, if you will.
The process rinses and repeats on the ???? side— the Fold flows from the reverse Fount, mucks itself up, then is purified again in the reverse-Delta, where it then makes its way up to be the source of the Fount as the Midst-canon characters know it!
Therefore, it only LOOKS mono-directional with no end or beginning from a top-down view— really it makes a full circle loop!
That’s all I’m willing to type out today! There are still so many things to be explored— what is this theoretical ???? space like? How do measly isletary gravitational pulls overpower the much larger pull of the Fold? How do things float in the Fold?
Bernhard and Gottle, if you give me grant money more research can be put into answering these questions. Bernhard and Gottle please give me grant money. Please. Please. PLEASE—

Why? Well, isn't that a surprisingly acute question.
The madame would roll her eyes, but she supposes she will have to understand his hesitance. She had been little as well, a long time ago. Had he not been who he was, he would have been right in his suspicion - but this little one emits a particular aura, one she wishes to witness up close.
The Lady rarely gets to study magic outside of her own in practice, let alone witnessing it from someone else. It is not an opportunity she will let slip past without grabbing it. Leave it to the scholar in her to be endlessly curious... or the remains of someone who was just as curious swirling in her soul.
"If you wish to remain in the company of the other Guests, you are more than welcomed to," she comments nonchalantly, "But I cannot assure you they will be as accepting of you as I am."
The illusion of a choice, really. The Lady is well spoken enough to know that a desperate alternative will always lead to the wanted result. Unless the pest wishes to surprise her. The Lady is not fond of surprises.
So she offers the sleeve of her kimono to him, gesturing at him to climb inside.
"The choice is yours."

"If they know you're with me, they'll leave you alone." (For Mono!!!) - @lurxof--thxmaw
dramatic & protective prompts.
it’s a very unexpected thing for an adult to speak to him, even more unexpected for an adult to be offering some form of protection. he still knows nothing about this lady, therefore is incredibly hesitant to even so much as move a muscle for fear of being snuffed out like a candle.
the boy stares up at death draped in glamour, wondering why the reaper lowers her scythe. blank bag meets blank mask and after a minute, he finally speaks.
a singular word from the city rat, but a question nonetheless.

I despise how some physicians/healthcare providers act like COVID-19 is the worst thing while simultaneously neglecting the other patients in their care
Like
*patient is a healthy and active adult with an uncomplicated case of COVID*: well after the PCR comes through we'll need a complete blood count, urinalysis with microscopic examination and I want a type and screen just in case, even though they're an outpatient
Meanwhile...
*patient presents to the ER with all the classical signs and symptoms of something being incredibly wrong with their blood*: well, they don't have COVID, so the best I can do is a basic metabolic panel
*patient has bloody, loose stool, a fever and is in an immense amount of pain*: eh, they can wait it out at home. I'll do a fecal occult though (even though stool is visibly bloody...)
*patient presents with nearly textbook perfect symptoms and history for mono*: well, the COVID PCR came back negative, so it must just be a cold! What do you mean we have tests that are nearly as fast as the PCR for mono. Why would I ever test for mono? We all know COVID is the only virus out there
I just don't understand what the disconnect is. And there's multiple people who do this in the year of our Lord 2025
Why

So, something that always got me conflicted- at least until recently where to be frank I'm too exhausted to care ( 2 jobs would do that to ya) is me being a kind of mono-shipper in DW Fandom. Like I do like other ships for the Doctor- like the Doctor with Rose, or Clara or the Master- but except with the Master and Martha where i think of scenarios for them-I mostly like these ships in regards to the impact they had on the Doctor- characteristization wise.
Tbh, I mostly ship him with River- surprise surprise, lol. I think it's because of the intrinsic tragedy with them. Also, because I imprinted in River- whoops.
I think with River and the Doctor- especially if you take the audios as Canon ( and I do take some of them as Canon in my head but not all)- we keep having these instances of how their life could be. Ex- with River and Four and them knowing each other all their lives. Or Nine and River- caring and watching each other grow old- reaching an understanding and being valunarble with each other ( something that is helped with River being a bit younger in the boxset. At least in my opinion. Would it be OK if I send you a ramble ask about the difference between Older!River and younger!River in my head?)
But, yeah- fate said otherwise for these two- their story is what it is and I think that's make me like it so much. Because it could have gone differently, they could have rewrote time, but over and over they chose this life. They chose each other- no matter how much it hurt.
But at the same time- the pessimistic, analytic part of me kept thinking of the fact that even of River chose that life with Four or Nine for example- they both came with too much cost. With Four, countless planets were destroyed including planet Earth. River lost friends and her family and now she probably has the guilt of all those deaths on her hearts. And the Doctor too would have ended suffering. And with Nine- well, they wouldn't have been able to be together even if they wanted to- the paradox would have been too big.
I'm kind of thankful River doesn't remember that timeline tbh- cause it probably would have been bittersweet for her- more bitter than sweet.
Still. Thank you for reading all this. I had a point but it's a bit too scattered for me to remember. Have a lovely day 😊 ☺️
Hi!!! Sorry if you don’t see this (what with not getting notifs on anon, and it’s been waaaay too many months to still be checking my blog to see if I’d responded), but!! Thank you for the wonderful ramble ask! I loved reading it!
While I am somewhat of a multishipper (okay, mostly for yowzah and thoschei also), I heavily relate to more enjoying certain ships from the context of the character impacts, more so than actually (passionately, emotional-investment-wise) shipping them. I love to peer at these lil characters under that more detached analysis microscope and study how each of these relationships crash and burn. For the angst! Because I love them.
*I, too, see audios I like as canon (Missy+Monk) and ignore the ones I dislike (the Lumiat)!
Oh, those audios with earlier Doctors do add a lot to the time-tangled nature of the Doctor and River's star-crossed (heh) marriage (make it even messier, bloodier, tragic-er).
Yeah, like?? From the start. The Doctor does view most people he keeps closest like pets, because it’s safer to have that dynamic — but River never lets him view her in that way, because she knows his name, she's got more information than he does — and yet he goes against everything that's familiar to him, and decides to trust her, and learn more about her (leaving the diary, to embark on a future he has yet to live). Likewise River does see the Doctor for the dangerous, ancient beast he is — and starts out intent to kill him for it, because her whole life was orchestrated for her to hate him and bring him down — but he's also kind, and yet she goes against everything that familiar to her, and decides to save him, and learn more about him (right now it's off to archeology school!). They both take risks for each other from the jump, go against some crucial drive of themselves the day they meet each other — and as they come to know and love the other, the risks keep getting bigger and bigger and bigger (until the universe begins to quake).
Yes, the way they are tragedy is an inspiring way, and they fought for their love, against time itself…
That’s what makes the lifetimes River spends with Nine or Four as you said — or even that boxset where she travels with Five for a minute — so fitting, conceptually? Even if the show wasn’t written with pre-ten Doctors in mind. As the Doctor and River fight Time itself to be with each other, time can’t help but give them glimpses of what they could’ve had, in another life.
[there’s probably something to say here about the conception of Time that we see in Flux, but I’m not sure I’ve got it right now]
And the pessimistic, analytic part of you, is — yeah. They both fight for a future they want and can’t have. Time wouldn’t survive their happiness. (Do you know The Four Doctors comic? The Doctors are caught by timelines in choices each of them almost made, and although we don’t spend long in that universe, for the Eleventh Doctor, it’s the Wedding of River Song timeline. He had almost decided to let time die to be “linear” with River. That comic tells us Eleven was SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING IT. He almost let time die around them to live with his wife.)
I am also glad River didn't remember her future with Nine to be honest, it would be too much to give up 😮‍💨
Anyways! There was some rambling from me! I don’t know if you still want to send a ramble ask about the difference between Older!River and younger!River in your head, after this amount of time, but I love ramble asks about River and the Doctor!!! ^-^
Thank you for your patience and for the ask 💕

This week I attended the mono printing workshop.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Suzannah gave us 2 types if printing we can try and we split into groups and switchwd after our break. The first one i did was using the acetate sheets. I drew my design on the sheet, and rolled the ink on the opposite side. Using white spirits, i was able to wipe off the ink in whatever places i didnt want it. Then we put it through the printing press and printed them onto a sheet. My design was mold and fungi under a microscope so i just drew circles with squiggly designs. My first colour was yellow, it came out kinda messy, my next colour was pink and it was slowly looking better.
Tumblr media
My last colour was blue and omggg. It looks SO COOL. Its so whimsical and colourful!!!
Tumblr media
After the break i did the second method of printing. Suzannah rolled out slabs of ink, and we put paper on it so it was kinda hovering on the ink and then we drew our design on the paper so on the opposite side it would pick up the ink, i had to be careful not to lean on the page when drawing which was so difficult, but it cane out really cool. The lines are very thin and i wish i coloured it in more but i like the colours!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Suzannah gave me another method to get the same designs i was making. She cut out a circle of acetate and put ink on it, then sprayed white spirits onto it and took off the layer with paper, and then told me to print it, do it again with another colour and print on top of it and so on.
Tumblr media
And this is how it came out
Tumblr media
You can see all the ink that got splashed and how splotchy it is. All the colours just leek into eachother creating more colours and the shapes are exactly what i wanted. Its so beautiful. I love printing its definitely my favourite type of art. Also the smell of the printing room is so addictive... 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

Common Causes of Leaf Spring Failure and How to Avoid Them
Tumblr media
Understanding Leaf Spring Basics
Before diving into the causes of failure, it's important to understand what a leaf spring is. A leaf spring is a simple form of spring commonly used for the suspension in wheeled vehicles. It consists of multiple layers of metal (typically steel), called leaves, that are bound together. These layers flex under pressure and absorb shock, providing a smoother ride and supporting the weight of the vehicle.
There are several types of leaf springs, including: - Multi-leaf springs: Composed of several layers with varying lengths. - Mono-leaf (single leaf) springs: Consist of one thick plate. - Parabolic leaf springs: Have tapered profiles to provide a more progressive response.
Regardless of the type, leaf springs play a vital role in maintaining ride quality, vehicle stability, and safety.
Common Causes of Leaf Spring Failures
Leaf spring failures can arise from various mechanical, environmental, and operational factors. Here are the most common causes:
1. Metal Fatigue and Overloading: One of the most prevalent causes of leaf spring failure is metal fatigue. Over time, the repeated flexing of the leaves under heavy loads causes microscopic cracks in the metal. These cracks grow, eventually leading to breakage.
2. Corrosion and Rust: Corrosion, particularly rust, weakens the integrity of the steel leaves. Moisture, salt, and other environmental contaminants accelerate this process.
3. Improper Installation or Alignment: Incorrect installation or misalignment of leaf springs can cause unnatural stress distributions, leading to premature wear or failure.
4. Poor Quality Materials or Manufacturing Defects: The quality of the steel used and the manufacturing process greatly influence the lifespan of leaf springs.
5. Lack of Maintenance: Neglecting regular inspections and maintenance leads to a build-up of wear and minor damage that can compound into significant failures.
6. Road and Operating Conditions: Severe off-road use, uneven terrain, or continuous operation in rough conditions amplify the stress experienced by the leaf springs.
Signs of Leaf Spring Failure
Recognizing the early signs of failure can help avoid catastrophic outcomes: - Vehicle sagging - Uneven tire wear - Increased vibration or harsh ride - Visible cracks or separation - Noisy suspension
Preventive Measures to Avoid Leaf Spring Failures
While it's impossible to prevent all failures, several proactive steps can be taken to reduce the risk and extend the life of your leaf springs.
1. Routine Inspection and Maintenance: Regular checks for wear and damage can help catch issues early.
2. Avoid Overloading:     Adhere strictly to the vehicle’s load ratings. Overloading not only accelerates leaf spring failure but also compromises the entire suspension system and safety.
3. Rust Prevention and Cleaning: Protective coatings and regular cleaning can help prevent rust.
4. Use Quality Components: Invest in high-quality leaf springs from reputable manufacturers.
5. Correct Installation Procedures: Ensure springs are installed by trained professionals using manufacturer-recommended tools and specifications.
6. Customize for Use Case: For fleets or specialty vehicles, consider custom-designed springs tailored for specific load and terrain requirements.
Future Innovations in Leaf Spring Durability
Emerging technologies offer new ways to reduce leaf spring failures: - Composite Leaf Springs - Smart Springs - Advanced Coatings
Conclusion
Leaf springs are simple yet critical components that bear the brunt of vehicle load and road stress. Understanding the common causes of their failure allows vehicle owners and fleet operators to implement strategies for prevention. Through regular maintenance, quality selection, and attention to installation practices, leaf spring failures can be significantly reduced, enhancing safety, performance, and the longevity of your vehicle.
Investing time and resources in these preventive measures is not just good engineering—it’s good business.

Meningitis Select one bacterial, one fungal, and one viral pathogen capable of producing meningitis in humans. Bacterial: Neisseria meningitidis Fungal: Cryptococcus neoformans Viral: Epstein-Barr virus Describe the general characteristics and structure of each pathogen. Neisseria meningitidis: parasitic, aerobic, Gram-negative, non-endospore forming, nonmotile, coccal bacterium (Devoe 1982,-page 162). Cryptococcus neoformans: grows as a yeast, unicellular, replicates by budding, makes hyphae during mating, eventually creates basidospores (Heitman 2011). Epstein-Barr virus: mature particle has diameter of 120 nm to 180 nm; has protein capsid, embedded with glycoproteins (Odumade 2011). Describe in detail the pathogenic process for each pathogen. (How does the microbe produce meningitis?) Neisseria meningitidis: Human infection begins with inhalation, attaching itself to the epithelial cells. Bacteria then passes the mucosal barrier and enters the bloodstream (Todar 2007). Cryptococcus neoformans: Spores are inhaled by human beings. Infection can then spread throughout the body, most particularly the central nervous system (McClelland 2007,-page 131). Epstein-Barr virus: The virus infects the salivary gland cells when brought into the mouth by saliva. The growth cycle of the virus is completed in this gland. At this point, infectious virus particles are created. This permanently alters the body's lymphatic system (Epstein-Barr 2013). 4. What are the risk factors for infection with each pathogen? Neisseria meningitidis: Approximately 1 in 10 patients die, most within 24-48 hours after the onset of symptoms. Up to 1 in 5 of all survivors suffer from brain damage, loss of hearing, amputation of an arm or leg, or other permanent harm to the person's body (Dangers 2013). Cryptococcus neoformans: People can die within 30 days of infection. Epstein-Barr virus: This can lead to the development of serious diseases, including cancers. Rupture of the spleen is also a possibility. Obstruction of the airway can occur because of swelling lymph nodes (Stoppler 2013). 5. What are the common methods used to diagram infection? Neisseria meningitidis: Diagnosis is usually made by taking sterile bodily fluid and isolating the infection. If bacteria have already reached the circulatory system, blood cultures can be performed. These tests usually take between 2 and 48 hours to assess (Mole 2008). Cryptococcus neoformans: Diagnosis is performed by microscopic examination and culture of bodily tissue or body fluids, such as blood, cerebrospinal fluid, or saliva. There is also a cyptococcal antigen test which can be performed on blood or cerebrospinal fluids. The culture allows a fungus to grow and develop if it is present in the sample being tested. Epstein-Barr virus: Most patients will suffer from three symptoms: fever, pharyngitis, and lymphadenopathy. Tests performed on blood are checked to test for white blood cells, the number of lymphocytes, and a "mono" test. There is also a test, the Paul-Bunnell heterophile antibody test which looks for either a positive or negative presence (CDC 2006). 6. Do these pathogens cause any other diseases? Neisseria meningitidis: other forms of meningococcal disease such as meningococcemia Cryptococcus neoformans: cryptococcal infections, weakened immune symptoms Epstein-Barr virus: mononucleosis, Burkitt's lymphoma, Hodgkin's lymphoma, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and multiple sclerosis (CDC 2013). 7. List any preventative measures to protect against infection with each microbe. Neisseria meningitidis: all people connected to an infected patient who made contact on the week before infection was noticed should receive medication; there are also three vaccines to combat the three different serogroups Cryptococcus neoformans: give an antifungal medication to all HIV patients, targeted screenings Epstein-Barr virus: vaccination Works Cited CDC. Sink (short story ig)
She was a researcher, honorably discharged after nearly 45 years in the field, not for lack of ability, but as a result of that tiredness that can only come from stagnation in your job. She was also an acolyte of water, a thing that garnered her some flack from her colleagues, with talks of "unprofessional biases" and "skewed analysis". By the time she had left though, she had already proven them wrong tens of times over. At some point though, she just grew tired of it, in the beginning of her career it had just been more fun, new discoveries were being made on a monthly basis, with major advancements delivered annually, but these days science was just slower. A somewhat significant discovery may come in a year, and one major discovery had been made in the past 15 years, and not for lack of trying, the field she was in had only grown since her employment and was still going strong after her departure.
Anyhow, she had fled the field due to its stagnation and went to pursue her truer passion, water. She left and went straight to the sea, buying a ship, becoming a seawoman and taking any jobs she was capable of. At this point, she is working on a job for a new research group (a small group of 18-22 year-olds all water acolytes or agnostic) calling themselves "All the way down". They didn't say too much about their research goals, which was unusual for scientists, especially young ones, but they paid enough, and they let her keep the equipment, which was an unusually generous deal. Even more so considering what the equipment was: a state-of-the art IMU in a mono-malgasteel frame, about the size of a coffee table, but only as heavy as a dictionary, and stronger than steel. The IMU had an accuracy range of 10^8-10^-12, a ludicrous amount, with a 4 Ghz sample rate to boot, capable of measuring the vibration of a 40Mhz tuning fork 30 feet across a room with 40 lbs. of mass bearing down on the IMU itself. The frame has ludicrous specifications as well, able to easily take 20,000N of compressive force with only 0.01% normal deformation (the most strict threshold for material failure), and able to plastically deform up to 3 degrees, an even more insane metric considering it's rigidity. And more than that, it is made of malgasteel, and mono-malgasteel no less. A (good) piece of malgasteel is a quasi-crystalline, holographic, macromolecule. A highly composite alloy forming a single continuous crystalline structure with insane material properties (as mentioned). And its most miraculous property, exposure to elemnic earth can compose the energy from the elemnic earth into the greater crystalline structure, it can regenerate; not only can it regenerate, it can regenerate using one of the most widely available substances in Flux. This material is invaluable, economically speaking. It is a magician, turning literal dirt into something much more valuable than diamond. It's miraculous properties derive directly from the core science of crystal holography, making crystals which grow into complex macroscopic structures based on the microscopic properties of the seed it grows from. There are of course, many other sciences involved in the process of actually creating a malgasteel object, but crystal holography is the one which originally theorized the existence of malgasteel.
Nerdy rambling aside, so far, the job had been going well, all she had to do was go to a specific spot selected by the scientists and drop the device down to a specific depth and record for a specific amount of time at a specific time of day, for a month straight. That seems like a long time, but the scientists needed an ungodly amount of data for a new technique they were testing to find an as yet unknown component to the physics of elemnic water.

Maybe they will act normal in school.
Maybe you act nice.
You don’t understand my sense of humour.
Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis.
What the hell does that mean?
An invented long word said to mean a lung disease caused by inhaling very fine ash and sand dust.
No, are you a genius now?
No, just separated them in different phonics and words.
Pneu/mono/ultra/microscopic/silico/volcano/coniosis
Pneu/mo/no/ul/tra/mi/cro/sco/pic/si/li/co/vol/ca/no/co/nio/sis
That looks dangerous.
A chair falling down? No, that looks dangerous.
Doing a splint?
Will you try and be nice?
I’ll give you a definitive maybe.
This is just a stage fright.
This is a full-blown panic attack!
You are a star, and that audience deserve to see you shine.
And the audience was not disappointed, they saw the brightest star that could ever shine in the universe.
You.
If you back me into a corner, i will whistle my way out of it.
So help me God, don’t make me blow this whistle.
School is a place for you to learn, not about fitting in the society.
If you are finding a way to exclude us students if we don’t “behave”, you don’t fit as educator.
You’re just a child!
Do i look like that i would be affect by that?
You’ll get killed by that.
So?
Your majesty!
My love.
But my liege our love is forbidden!
Let’s flea this place, just you and me.
Forever?
And ever.
Gtfo of my house.
Disproportionation means an element undergoes oxidation and reduction after a reaction.
…Did you recite that to make me feel dumb?
No, but i did want to know what that word means after know how to spell that word. Mostly to show off nerd stuff.
*gets out of my house in the morning for school
Hi neighbour
*gets back in my house
Hey don’t get back in your house.
*it’s too early to social
Thinking something is difficult, it’s only a state of mind. You think it’s hard simply because you don’t have fast solutions to it.
If you can solve it, it’s not a problem, hence it’s easy.

Zum celebrates its 25th anniversary as a record label with a series of shows on the West Coast. On Saturday, Dec 2, Oakland California’s renovated Thee Stork Club will host the Bay Area return of GROWING after thirteen years away!
They will be joined by synth-doom act My Heart, an Inverted Flame, New York’s Somnambulists (solo project of Warren Ng), and Marshall Trammell & Paul Costuros Duo). DJ Melanie Marie will also be spinning and providing live visuals.
The New York/Olympia duo GROWING has a storied history of releases on Kranky and Silver Current and recent live and recorded collaborations with acclaimed harpist Mary Lattimore. GROWING released a CD EP with Zum in 2005 (a split with Mark Evan Burden) and contributed a track to the recent Zum Audio Volume 5 double-CD compilation.
My Heart, an Inverted Flame played their second-ever show (their first was a 2022 Zum showcase at Noise Pop) after a few years of recording for Zum and Deathbomb Arc. The San Francisco/Ashland, Oregon duo delivers heavy doom drones using only synthesizers and percussion. Members Andee Connors (A Minor Forest, Common Eider, King Eider, aQuarius Records) and Marc Kate (I Am Spoonbender, Driftloss) also released a collaboration single with viral TikTok star Banshee. The Wire magazine called them “Stars of the Lid with a bad fucking attitude.”
Marshall Trammell (Music Research Strategies) & Paul Costuros are longtime Bay Area improvisers who convened for Trammell’s six-month residency at The San Francisco Contemporary Jewish Museum “For Friends” ending in early 2022. Their first recorded material as this Duo is documented in the track “Blue Cube” on Zum Audio Vol. 5. Trammell has toured extensively co-founder and former percussion of the Oakland-based Black Spirituals and currently as solo performer Music Research Strategies or the percussion in In Defense of Memory and White People Killed Them. Costuros has been in the projects Total Shutdown, Death Sentence: Panda!, The Fisticuffs Bluff, Murder Murder, and Burmese.
Somnambulists is Brooklyn-based Warren Ng. He has released solo material under the moniker Somnambulists and in the group This Invitation. Ng has been involved in collaborative film + live score performance works presented at experimental film festivals and exhibitions in New York and San Francisco including an expanded cinema series co-presented by the Microscope Gallery & The Whitney Museum (2016); Mono No Aware IX and X (2015 & 2016); and the SF Cinematheque's Crossroads 2016 & 2018 (presented at the SFMOMA). He has performed at Che Chen’s (75 Dollar Bill) Fire Over Heaven concert series in New York and this is his first appearance back in Oakland since 2019. This show will also be the album release for the new Somnambulists cassette Ascending Planes on Zum.
DJ Bio:
Melanie Marie is a visual artist and creative coder based in Oakland. Initially working with installations centered around Macintosh SE & SE/30 computers, she is now primarily focused on live coding visual synthesis in collaboration with live musicians. Melanie is a host of Transformations Radio and Beloved Radio. Her work and music sets focus on the relationships between music and imagery.
ZUM BIO:
Siblings Yvonne (Xiu Xiu) and George Chen (Common Eider, King Eider, KIT) launched the Zum Audio compilation series (including acts like Duster, Modest Mouse, Deerhoof, Yellow Swans, Zach Hill) in 1998. Over the ensuing decades, the label has released indie emo pioneers Nuzzle, Canadian noiseniks AIDS Wolf, and even Chen’s own stand-up comedy EP.
To mark this anniversary, the latest Zum Audio Vol 5 was released in a double CD format as well as on digital. George Chen set out to survey present-day experimental electronics, drones, hardcore, and mutant pop.
