Just for fun, here are my rapid fire rambling thoughts on the ATLA ships and platonic dynamics hehe (please don’t go full ship wars tho - these are just my opinions as a chill multishipper!)

My Favorite Ships:

• Zukka - My current brainrot and main ship!! I know they aren’t canon but I really love them and their potential okay😭I just feel like their personalities would work so well! Sokka would call Zuko on his shit and Zuko would be good at grounding Sokka when he needs it. Plus I have seen some absolutely breathtaking AUs with this ship! And fire-and-ice vibes except gay! Them <3

• Kataang - Cutiessss!! I love them! They may not be the ship I think about most often, but when I do think about them, they’re adorable! Aang is such a “my wife” guy and Katara absolutely adores him back! Also the last airbender x last southern waterbender dynamic goes HARD! I like that these two are canon!

• Yuetara - Listen I know they barely interacted but THEY’VE ACTUALLY GROWN ON ME SO MUCH LATELY AND I VERY HIGH KEY SHIP THEM! Something about like, Katara thinking about Yue when she bends is so😭Their story would be heartbreaking in the best way!! Sapphic noncanon blorbos <3

• Mailee - These two are SO cute and have so much potential rahhh!! Again, love some noncanon sapphics <3

• Batkoda - Super SUPER cute and silly and fun! The dads fr <3 Bato is either Katara and Sokka’s adopted uncle or their stepdad and I love it for them hehe! This usually pairs well with a “Hakoda adopts Zuko” AU lmao!

Other Canon/Relatively Popular Ships:

• Zutara - A good ship! I see the potential and tbh it’s very very fun to think about sometimes!!! However, some of y’all toxic Zutara stans need to leave my boy Aang alone lmao. Those who are chill tho, I rock with y’all!! Overall, I’m not opposed if it’s done well and I do sometimes seek out Zutara content! I personally do prefer writing them as found siblings tho, especially with the Azula and Katara parallels!!

• Sukka - Canon cuties!! I really like them! Suki my BELOVED <3 She’s so underrated!

• Yukka - Also canon cuties! They make me sad tho ahhhhh😭😭😭

• Maiko - Also ALSO canon cuties!! They have an interesting dynamic that I can really appreciate! And gotta love Mai <3

• Jinko - Jin my beloved! These two had a super cute dynamic during the one episode they had together lmaoooo, tho I don’t think about this ship too too often.

• Tokka - I don’t mind it if it’s them getting together as adults! But tbh I personally don’t prefer shipping them as teens and I think Toph’s crush was just a typical young girl crush on someone slightly older lol. Definitely not horrible and most Tokka shippers are relatively chill! I like to think Sokka sees Toph as a little sister tho.

Now For Some Of The Crackship-y/Less Popular Ships (based on ships I’ve actually seen):

• Zukki (Zuko/Sokka/Suki) - Power throuple fr and I love some polyamory!! While I mostly lean plain Zukka, this is extremely fun to think about and would be a great dynamic!

• Mai/Ty Lee/Suki - Saw this in a Zukka fic once and it was adorableeeeee! I may not have plans to actively write this or anything, but it’s cute! Another power throuple!

• Jetko - I don’t think they would be compatible long term, but by god they are very very fun to think about in a “Jet flirts with Zuko and Zuko is completely oblivious and they share one kiss before everything goes to shit” way lmao!

• Taang - I can respect it!! I will always love them as chaos siblings personally, but it’s a totally valid and chill ship!

• Katoph - Not a bad ship at all! I’ve only come across like one post tho lmao. Also I do think I heavily prefer them as found sisters, but that’s just me personally! Again, totally a valid and chill ship!

• Azutara - I’m very neutral on this lmao. I don’t despise it at all and it could be pretty interesting?? But tbh really not something I plan to seek out.

• Azulaang - I mean?? I’m also pretty neutral on this one. Aang would be kind to her if she was trying to get help but…idk lmao.

• Tyzula - I see the potential, but I personally think Mai and Ty Lee had a healthier and more interesting and more realistic dynamic. Just my preference tho!

(I think I just want Azula to be in therapy before I reallyyyyy ship her lmao, but NOT THE KIND OF “THERAPY” SHE WAS GIVEN IN THE COMICS)

• Zukaang - I don’t love this as a ship honestly. The canon age gap as teens is sketchy for my personal taste, tho I’ve seen people ship them in “Aang was 16 when he got frozen” AUs and that’s…better and I can get behind it a little! It would be interesting! But I think Roku being Zuko’s great-grandpa just still throws me off of this ship. I don’t have any beef with the shippers tho! I’m very “live and let live” and I have seen so much worse lol.

Can’t Forget My Fav Platonic Dynamics!

• Sokka and Aang - Two found brothers who share one idiot braincell when they interact LMAO! Love them always <3

• Sokka and Katara - The siblings ever!!

• Zuko and Aang - Enemies to found brothers!! Canon besties! I love their friendship and their parallels SO MUCH!!

• Toph and Katara - Absolutely ADORABLE as found sisters!!!! Love them!

• Zuko and Katara - I really like their development in a platonic sense and I think they’re very very fun and lovely found siblings by the end!!!! Zuko is 100% the brother that just “yeah my sister can and will whoop your ass” LMAO!

• Zuko and Toph - Also very found siblings in my head!! Only have a handful of solo interactions in canon but I DON’T CARE! I WILL FOUND FAMILY THEM ANYWAY! I’m a “Toph seeks out Zuko for sibling hugs/cuddles when she’s cold because he’s basically a space heater” truther.

• Uncle Iroh and the Gaang - Zuko needs to learn to share because that is ALL OF THEIR Uncle!!!

• Hakoda and Zuko - I thrive in this section of the fandom!! They have exactly one (1) frame together in canon, but I ADORE Dadkoda adopting Zuko! Something about it is just so wholesome and cute!!! My very very fav ATLA fics are this trope!!#LetHakodaBitchSlapOzaiAndAdoptZuko2024

• Uncle Iroh and Zuko - God they make me so ALSNDKSNXNCNSNSNXNX, y’know?

• The Gaang as a whole - Obvious I know, but I really do love them😭They all bonded sm and I adore their little family!! I eat up fanart of the Gaang cuddling like CANDY omg. And yes Suki is included in the Gaang because WHY WOULDN’T SHE BE!

69 which... is honestly more than i was expecting? i think it helps that my goal is to post a fic once a month mostly bc that's my motivation to keep writing even when i'm busy/stressed!

i used to be good at it. then i got stressed bc of school. and then i was suddenly like "uhhhh idk How to respond???" i think the thing that got me was i didn't know how to reply to the distressed comments on my sokka falling fic so i just. accidentally stopped.

oh here in the garden (let's play a game) 100% rip to sokka sorry babes ilysm hate to do it to ya, love the angst tho <333 rip to everyone who missed the major character death tag lol. well... that or a spring and summer song, too brief rip to geto in the +1 oops... oh shoot... it could also be take me where my soul can run... hm...

this was hard, but imma go with i was a child and she was a child bc it's based on one of my favorite childhood memories! rip to zuko and his ice cream tho :/ but azula is VIBING the whole time oiuygfcgyhuij

8. do you get hate on fics?

not really? i did once have someone try to correct me and say that i wrote sokka with ocd instead of tourette's but it was in the bookmarks and it made me laugh lol. i also got this comment on my kubokai kaidou with ts fic: ".. the self projection is heavy in this one ... -_-" so idk if that counts lol

9. do you write smut? if so, what kind?

nope :)

10. do you write crossovers? what's the craziest one you've written?

uhhhh not really? i wrote ninjago equestria girls crossover oneshot in middle school but i never finished it and it SUCKED lol

uhhh i wrote a 7,600 word fic in three hours while i had covid? that's prolly the shortest? i count that as shorter than anything i may have finished faster bc i had covid lol but longest? ummmm over a year? multiple years? idkkkkkk the jay with ts fic i posted was something i wrote in 2019 and i edited it (a lot) and posted it in 2022 so??? that maybe?

13. have you ever co-written a fic before?

uhhh i did with friends in middle/high school, but those never left the docs! also grace and i have. very many much so aus lol

14. what's your all-time favorite ship? from all fandoms?

RARIJACK!!! it was one of my first hardcore ships, and also was my introduction to queer ships!!! renga is a close second, but rarijack just is really important and special to me for sentimental reasons that put it above renga and others! i am also on a seroroki kick right now. it's not my all-time favorite, but the brain rot seems never ending right now lol

15. what's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

GOD SO MANY i have a folder in gdocs just for ninjago fics and there are folders within the folder for different types of wips i'll never finish - i have That many: "no substance", "baby girls", "drafts"... etc...

16. what are your writing strengths?

uhhhhhhhhhh ngl i'm in a place right now where i feel like the answer is Nothing (writer's block has been Bad recently), but i think something i'm good at in a very specific way is making readers feel the discomfort of characters? like idk i've been told that the way i write ts and tics (specifically tic attacks) makes the readers feel uncomfortable in like a "wow i didn't know it felt this way" kind of way??? i like to think i'm good at characterization??? idkkkk

17. what are your writing weaknesses?

ummm setting and scenery & connecting parts of a story, especially if they're parts that i'm stuck on/transitions are prolly my biggest ones???

18. thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

i mean go for it as long as it's respectful and like... you tried making sure it's accurate?

19. first fandom you wrote for?

uhh rainbow fairy/a-z mysteries... but that was like very briefly on paper. first time like... for Realsies was ninjago

20. favorite fic you've written?

oh 100% hey, little songbird, give me a song. it's just really special to me and writing it helped me cope with a new tic i had. but one that i wrote more recently is fantasies i'm not sure that i'm worthy of which is a ritsu-centric fic and is prolly tied as my favorite fic i wrote in 2023. the other one would be sun comes streaming through the window (& i can't sleep anymore) which is my 21k word kenji-centric fic lol but that one is like... i'm more proud of it than anything, which is what puts it up there.

ALSKFJG to be fair Reedy i for one am not complaining about the length over here, there's a thrill to each update. Idk if I've mentioned before that the first thing i do when I'm scrolling through ao3 is to set my filters tl show only complete works. I'm not strong enough to deal with uncompleted works, but at the same time, if i go on too long like that, i end up missing the thrill of just... Going along for the ride, checking when there's an update, hyping myself uo when there IS and I'm not ready to deal with it, taking a moment to breathe after i read it, get lost in the possibilities of what's to come until the next chapter comes out

Like... It is fun, to be able to enjoy a story to it's fullest extent, and there's a certain joy that can't be replicated by reading it all in one sitting, a joy that comes from having to sit with what you have and *wonder*

And BOI am i fucking wondering what's going to happen, i have a ticking time bomb stressing me out constantly in the form of a somewhat unhinged but ultimately baby 14 year old called Azula, and meanwhile zuko is sneaking into sokka's bedroom and I'm just here sitting watching reading knowing that's just BEGGING for trouble bc WHAT IF SOMEONE COMES IN, and also toph absolutely knows bc she literally can feel the extra heartbeat but she minds the business that pays her

I hope it's that, anyways, and not toph waiting for the moment to bully sokka, which i WOULD appreciate but... I wouldn't wish to be sokka for that if that's the plan. And talking about bullying. JET JET JET JET. You've got me over here stressed out for jet waking up bc like... AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH. PAIN. I WANT HIS PAIN. I CRAVE HIS SUFFERING. I NEED TO SEE WHAT HE'LL DO NOW. Reedy what have you done to me. You have me rooting for jet. In a twisted backwards way but still

And katara deserves the world, she has no idea what's coming and god will she hate it but she's doing her best she deserves some vacations. They're not coming tho. Bc as soon as jet wakes up to cause problems on purpose she'll probably find out zukka is a thing and she still doesn't like zuko so the poor girl is bound for whiplash and then the water tribe is getting into ba sing se but not for long! Because Azula is a menace and she's out for blood and i oove her but that kid needs to be adopted soon before she burns the world (is she going to get adopted? Puppy eyes over here begging for her to be adopted. She'd look great in water tribe blue) (i know that's not what this story is about but a guy can dream ok?)

Anyways. This is what you do when you leave me to think about the future of the story for too long. The possibilities are simmering in my brain

Katara isn’t getting a break anytime soon! & no I’m sure she won’t be THRILLED to find out about zukka mostly because her interaction with Zuko doesn’t go so smoothly next chapter ha……. Oops

As for azula…. Hmmm….. we’ll see ;)

Never too late! Especially since it took me AGES to answer all of these lol.

First, kataang:

Love these kiddos! A simple, straightforward love story that fans aren’t happy with, for some reason.

Zutara:

I was into it the first time watching the show, and they have a great dynamic! But zutara shippers are…well…they never shut up about how toxic Aang is, or how stupid the endgame was, and zutara was totally going to happen but something horrible behind the scenes stopped it…and oh boy this is sounding familiar and I hate it! So yeah. I’ve stepped back from this one a bit.

Zukaang!

THIS IS THE ONE TRUE PAIRING OF AVATAR! Narrative foils! Tol and smol! Sworn enemies to lovers I mean…best friends! Rainbow fire tornado! And we’re NOT supposed to ship them? Just because Aang’s twelve?

And finally, Zukka:

They are the perfect nerdy combination! Every relationship should have wacky yet innovative hijinks. And who could forget the world’s awkward-est balloon ride? It is indeed very rough, buddy.

I think the only thing for me is that they’re both downers. I wouldn’t say cynical exactly—Zuko’s a hopeful wee boy deep down inside, the idiot—but they’re missing that lightfooted I mean, lighthearted element!

I finished chapter one of my Zukka winter guard AU today. I don‘t know when I‘m going to post it. I prefer to finish chaptered fics before posting chapters for personal reasons but I might change that.

Okay I’m sorry but I find it genuinely hilarious that Zukka shippers consistently characterize Sokka as being the taller and bulkier one when this is canonically Sokka’s build

Like Zuko brakes metal chains and wood tables with a kick. He could throw Sokka over his shoulder like a potato sack (he’d probably squeal too if Zuko did).

At least in the series, I’m pretty sure Zuko is taller too. I tried finding height comparison but could only find the gaang in the comics

Zuko looks taller but it might just be that Sokka is slightly farther back.

As grown ups it’s a bit unclear, tho Sokka might be like …half an inch taller. I kind of feel like their heads aren’t the same size tho so I get confused, and Sokka’s eyebrows are higher up his face than Zuko’s.

Zuko is wearing baggier clothes so it’s harder to tell his muscle mass in comparison to Sokka, but I wouldn’t say they’re that different to each other. Certainly not lean muscle tho.

I think it mostly has to did with people wanting to make him as ‘awkward-baby’ as possible. Which peeves me a bit bc a lot of people deny Sokka’s femininity, and I think exploring how Sokka would feel being protected when he’s often felt the need to be protector would be interesting ����. Maybe an idea for a one-shot later.

Also, if you hc Sokka as having had a celebrity crush on the boulder …

I mean you could say he has a thing for muscles 👀

(Also I remember someone saying he’s attracted to ppl who can kick his ass so it makes sense 💀)

Hai! I am curious. How do you usually envision your zukka? Slender vs beefy? Same height or height difference? Same or differs across verses? Like in my head, Gym Leader Zuko looks exactly like the type of person who'd camp in the forest for weeks (even tho he's 15 min away from home), climbs Sequoia like trees barehanded, and wrestles with Ursaring for fun, but Firelord Zuko has a more refined appearance with a lean fighters build but the emotional strength of someone whos worked food service.

This is a great question and the answer is that it depends on the AU.

We see in canon that Zuko in particular tends to put on muscle but also the points that he’s beefiest is when he’s been actively preparing to fight the avatar and that he loses a lot of that hulk incredibly quickly when he’s not actively maintaining it. So I guess the short answer is that I subscribe to tall beanpole Zuko rights and the muscle levels depend highly on what he’s doing.

Sokka, meanwhile, spends exactly one (1) summer’s worth of a year taller than Zuko when they’re seventeen and never lets him forget about it. He doesn’t have the body type to really get stacked the way he’d like to and he never gets over it.

Personally I do enjoy height difference so I’ll play with that sometimes, but mostly I love the idea that 6’4” Zuko is filled with so much anxiety that he spends most of his time slouching around to make it easier for his friends to put their arms around his shoulders, and everyone forgets how tall he is until he fixes his posture to yell at someone.

ohhhh this one is one of my absolute favorite fics of all time!! Zuko and Sokka meet during a poetry class in college and bond over their shared love of poetry and Zuko himself is a poet but goes under the pen name The Blue Spirit, who happens to be Sokka’s favorite poet - features some truly incredible poetry and some of the most romantic writing I’ve ever read

Sokka works at a fancy hotel and catches feelings for new employee Zuko, who also happens to be the boss’ nephew - this is one of the first Zukka fics I ever read and I still think about this one a lot

Sokka is in love with his earth science major best friend Zuko and luckily Zuko feels the same way about Sokka - features the duo sneaking into an earth science lab in the middle of the night and a really beautiful scene of Zuko coming out to his favorite teacher Prof. Piandao

this is a really fantastic series about a modern au Zuko being autistic and his childhood and eventually him and Sokka falling in love -- please read the tags on these ones tho!! There are some really heavy ones where you should definitely be aware of the content warnings. i dont usually go here but my brain has been absolutely drenched in thoughts of zukaang fake dating in an attempt to show off to their actual romantic interests aka the Water Siblings,,, endgame kataang and zukka with the zukaang..... being very qpp-but-barely-skirting-edge-of-stoned-sloppy-makeouts etc

there is, as yall probably realize since it's me - no plot only vibes :p i very much like the idea of zukaang being very physical anyway, platonic or otherwise

meanwhile sokka is nostrils deep into his thesis and does not have Time for nonsense things like Unrequited Squirmy Feelings. yes to retail therapy tho. fuck, lots of it. he's not browsing through the lingerie sales bc he saw zuko laughing at aang's absolutely terrible joke, he's browsing bc he will murder his project head if he gets One More smarmy email. you know.

What’s your favorite brushes + coloring process on procreate? I love your palettes! They’re so vibrant! and how smooth the blending/layering is! I’m not exactly new to digital but my first program was painttol sai and making the switch to procreate has been so difficult... pls don’t feel obligated to answer this! I just really love your style and you seem like you won’t mind me asking! Love your art so much btw hshshsh zukka rights!!

The brush I use are basically all Procreate default, mostly the hard edge airbrush for lineart and coloring, the ink studio pen for base colors (and sometimes shading), and the fine line ink pen for tiny details. As for the coloring 1) thANK YOU??? And 2) like literally everything I do, it’s mostly fooling around and finding out, i think for me something that really smoothed my coloring process is adding a low opacity layer above the base colors in a bright-ish shade and set it to either linear burn, color burn or multiply (depending on the vibes). And yeah I totally feel you, I switched to procreate about a year ago and I STILL find out new stuff about that app on the daily ((there are a lot of good tutorials on YouTube tho if you have the patience to watch them …which I don’t lmao))
