bro. 700 million years ago is the cryogenian. that's around the origin of multicellular life.
and that sounded completely fucking wrong to me, so i went and looked it up and HE'S RIGHT. CHLAMYDIA FIRST BRANCHED OFF FROM ALL OTHER LIFE ON THE PLANET AROUND 700 MILLION YEARS AGO, WHICH IS BEFORE ANIMALS FUCKING EXISTED.
forget "we've had chlamydia for longer than we've been humans" we've had chlamydia for longer than we've had BONES.

Came across this post whilst writing a paper on the research of subauroral region phenomena so I have decided this is an acceptable reason to take a teeny tiny break to reblog.
If anyone wants me to post the references list for my paper (even if just to look at pretty pictures of STEVE), let me know and I'll post it!
I was googling keogram because I was trying to figure out how to pronounce it. If anyone speaks Inuktitut or another Inuit dialect that this might be from please let me know if this is actually a word for it (I'm sceptical given that uh... I was not aware that these alnguages had the vowel e). I am struggling to find any mention of it outside the auroral instrumentation research community and I want to acknowledge it in my paper.
Tumblr media
A keogram ("keo" from "Keoeeit" – Inuit word for "Aurora Borealis") is a way of displaying the intensity of an auroral display. Captured at Midnight Dome, Dawson City.

Soooo…. what ever happened to the puppets from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer? And why was Santa such a grumpy bastard?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Well, the answer to that first question ended up being a much more complicated story than it first appeared, even complete with a twist ending. And while researching it, I stumbled across the tale of a forgotten Japanese animation pioneer who revolutionized animation industries in Japan AND China, made a whole bunch of propaganda during WWII and the Chinese Civil War, and then created the Rankin/Bass "Animagic" animation style and animated all those classically American classic stop-motion Christmas classics that we know and love. Tadahito "Tad" Mochinaga (持永 只仁).
Tumblr media
That's right, Rankin/Bass was an anime studio!
Born in 1919, Mochinaga was inspired by early Walt Disney shorts to become an animator. Much like Disney, he built Japan's first ever multi-plane camera rig,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ari-chan (アリチャン, 1941)
before being contracted to make war propaganda.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ironically at the same time he was working under Mitsuyo Seo (瀬尾 光世) on Momotarou's Sea Eagles (1943)—a delightful picture about a bunch of cute little animals triumphantly bombing the shit out of those fat, stupid Americans at Pearl Harbor—his biggest inspiration was working on his own exciting propaganda cartoons from the exact opposite side of the same conflict.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But it was during his time working under the Chinese Communist Party that he inadvertently popularized stop-motion puppet animation in east Asia.
Tumblr media
Tasked with making a puppet film that satirized the Nationalist Party's leader, but also dealing with an extreme shortage of film in the country, Mochinaga realized that if he stiffened the joints of the puppets, posed them manually and shot them frame-by-frame instead, he could use only the exact number of frames necessary.
Tumblr media
He would continue to refine that stop-motion style after returning to Japan,
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and eventually catch the eye of an American producer, Arthur Rankin Jr, who had just started a studio with his friend Jules Bass.
Tumblr media
The story continues in much greater detail in this video, which completely obliterated my other plans for the month, and which I promise, does actually answer the question at the start of this post. I really didn't expect this project to balloon into an epic that spans an entire century, but in order to understand the ending, you have to start at the beginning!
youtube
Seriously though, I think this is the best video I've made yet and you KNOW I spent an absurd amount of time learning 3D modeling/rigging/texturing/animation to make what amounts to just some stylistic icing on the cake, but it's a bit different from what I usually make and youtube can punish you for that so if you do find the video interesting and feel like sharing it with someone you think would also be interested, I will personally show up at your house with an old satchel bursting with deliciously ripe oranges and squeeze all that sweet, sloppy nectar by hand, one-by-one directly into your expectant, gaping maw.

The dreamer
The translation may be a little bit incorrect but I think that songs shouldn't be even translated at all (but I need an English audience to be here)
I wasted 8 hours on this and it came out looking cool I think

Game Dev Log #3 - 5/16/24
well okay i didn't realize it had been quite THAT long since my last upload! i knew i was procrastinating and putting things off, i did NOT realize that i had been doing that for two whole weeks. and i know that what iʻve got now definitely doesn't look like two weeks of work.
the main reason is i encountered some kind of bug or glitch with godot and was no longer able to save ANYTHING in my game. so i had to redo the whole thing. not quite from scratch, thankfully, but there were a lot of things i had to port over to a brand new version of the game. this time i decided to install version control, so in theory if something like that happens again i can go back to an earlier version.
anyway! no new music or anything in this round, but! i fixed the issue with the wall slide facing issue - turns out that what i needed to figure out what side the wall was on was get_wall_normal(). really easy to fix it up after that!
other than that, instead of a dash mechanic, i added a glide! definitely inspired by the ori games, but also inspired by the fact that i have worked out the first bits of a tentative setting for this game!
behold!
the bunny-moths!
Tumblr media
broad strokes concepts: the bunny moths were an ancient race of people who used their own silk cocoons and shed fur to create beautiful tapestries, but now most of them have died out and only the meagrest remnants of their civilization survive.
i don't know whether the player IS one of the last surviving bunny moths or only has some approximation of their wings/cloaks, but i'm gonna try to lean into the moth wing aesthetic, which means gliding capabilities for the player!
i also added a background image - this is NOT AT ALL intended to be final art, it's just to give myself a sense of how fast the player is moving on the screen. it's just a reference point right now.
as for things i'd like to add/tweak/fix for next time:
obviously still don't have music or creaking sounds to go with the wind! audio is pretty low-priority for me right now, though, so i'm not sure if i'll have that implemented on my next update. on the physics/movement side of things, i think i definitely want to give the player a dash of some kind. then i have to figure out if there are any other big movement options i might want to implement, such as a super jump, super dash, grappling hook, swimming, etc.... there's a lot of potential options, and i'll have to work the things i really want the player to be able to do in this game.
speaking of what i want the player to be able to do in this game, i'll also have to think about combat eventually. probably gonna put that off until after i've figured out all the movement abilities.
anyway, thanks for reading!

Sinners (2025)
This is a Movie Health Community evaluation. It is intended to inform people of potential health hazards in movies and does not reflect the quality of the film itself. The information presented here has not been reviewed by any medical professionals.
Sinners has one sequence with some harsh lightning, which is preceded by a shot of distant lightning a few minutes before it happens. The following sequence has some rapid gunfire with bright muzzle flashes, but this sequence takes place during the daytime, mildly mitigating the strobe's harshness. Both of these sequences happen very late in the film, at least an hour and 40 minutes in, and the rest of the film is free of any strobe effects.
All of the camera work is either stationary or very smooth.
Flashing Lights: 4/10. Motion Sickness: 1/10.
TRIGGER WARNING: There is a lot of graphic violence in this film, with a lot of blood and gore. A backstory about domestic abuse is told. Early in the film, a CG snake is killed graphically and painfully.
BRANDON'S REVIEW: A dark and lustful story about twin brothers returning home to the Depression-era South after working for years with Al Capone, this film showcases a lot that we already knew, from Michael B. Jordan's acting talent (in dual roles this time), Ryan Coogler's talented directing; but it also gives us some surprises, including how powerful the music can be when Ludwig Göransson is given more creative control than just writing the score. The real standout in this film is Miles Caton in his acting debut, where one cannot tell that this is his first film, as he brings a level of confidence onto the screen equal to both iterations of Michael B. Jordan with whom he interacts, not to mention the raw musical talent he demonstrates with equal qualification. The invasion by other film genres throughout the film may be a little off-putting for some, but overall, this film works, especially with its celebration of blues music. Grade: B+.
NOTE FROM BRANDON: As many of you have probably noticed, I haven't been very active for the last few weeks. I left my regular job in February for an opportunity at a start-up company, one that has since failed. I haven't had a lot of time to evaluate new films. This came right at the same time as a big life change for which I am not currently sharing details, but will share at a later date. I am starting a new job on Monday, and if it is more reliable than the start-up that previously employed me, I should be resuming regular video reviews and content by the end of April, just in time for the summer movie season. Thank you all for your patience, and an extra-special thanks to Momgana on our Discord server, who has also been doing some evaluations of her own.
