Spacedogs AU: The Cat’s Fancy

Adam doesn't know why he goes to the park that night.

It's cloudy, there's little visibility, and yet he finds himself heading outside.

His breakup still stings from just a few weeks prior, and while he's sometimes lonely Adam doesn't try to talk to strangers much anymore. Beth's rejection made him think he's better off alone, and when he spots people in the park he avoids them heading as far back as he can possibly get hoping for just a glimpse of the stars outside.

But when he hears a hiss coming from the bushes behind him he freezes.

Everyone knows shifters aren't prone to attacking humans, mostly other shifters, but he's still never met one and the sound is far too loud to be just a normal sized cat. He gets up from the bench, hand in his pocket to grab the taser he always carries, and is about to leave when he hears a whimper.

And he sees a clawed hand sticking out as if trying to reach someone.

Adam takes a deep breath and goes down on his knees, pushing back the leaves to see a man deeply injured curled up in the bushes.

"Oh!" he says, reaching to grab the man's arm, "Are you alright?"

He pulls, barely able to get the man out halfway, and lets go when he realizes he's right.

It's a shifter.

The injury must've made him stop mid-shift, his body half cat but still very human, and the blood all over him makes Adam's chest hurt.

"Are...do you need an ambulance? I'll call..."

The shifter grabs his arm, digging his nails in, and Adam whimpers turning back to look at him.

"No...no...cops..."

"But...you're hurt and...you're hurting me!" he yells, pushing him back hard.

The shifter crawls closer, and his ripped clothes make him shiver.

"I just...I need to...get home."

"I have to call the ambulance," Adam repeats, tears in his eyes as he looks at the claw on his arm, "I...I..."

The cat shifter growls, trying to shift again, and Adam pulls out his phone to dial 911.

"Hello? Hello, I've found an injured cat shifter in Woods Park. He's right near the cluster of elms at the back and he's bleeding and...aggressive."

"No cops, no..."

Adam watches the shifter pass out, going limp, and sits down on the grass beside him. He's surprised when the shifter comes closer, nuzzling his arm, and it feels wrong to be excited at the attention but he is.

He pets the shifter's head as a loud purr reaches his ears.

"They're gonna take care of you," he says, "I...I'll stay till they come, ok? They'll take care of you."

The ambulance doesn't arrive for almost twenty minutes, and the shifter gets so aggressive that Adam ends up coming along since him just being close calms the shifter down.

The shifter who, according to the ID in his pocket, is named Nigel Ibanescu.

Nigel ends up having many injuries that didn't heal because of the bush he'd been hiding in.

"Cats are allergic to hosta plants," the doctor says, as Adam sits beside Nigel, "It was...a fluke I suppose. Any longer entangled in that he might not have made it out. You saved his life."

They give Nigel some antibiotics, and after a few hours Adam can see the wounds healing rapidly which makes him look much more normal - though his brown cat ears are prominent on top of his head. Nigel hasn't let go of him the entire time, purring so loudly Adam is sure he'll hear it in his dreams, but he knows he has to go.

"You'll be ok," he says, "I have to get home and...I...I don't like it here. You'll be ok, Nigel."

Nigel makes a sound when Adam pulls himself away, and it's harder than he expects to leave but he does, getting home so late he passes out cold. Adam is grateful that he's off the next morning, even if he feels anxious about how much he missed the day before.

And he can't stop thinking about Nigel.

Was he ok?

Who hurt him?

Adam is in the middle of breakfast when he gets his answer.

The knock at his door has him confused and when he peeks out he stares wide eyed at who's on the other side.

"Nigel."

Adam doesn't know why he opens the door.

Curiosity?

Worry?

But as soon as he does Nigel pulls him into his arms, and the sound of his purring has Adam confused.

"Mine."

The word gives Adam pause.

"What?"

Nigel pulls back, his almost yellow eyes nearly glowing in the sunlight, and his smile makes Adam's heart beat faster.

"You're mine," he says, breathing in deep, "All mine, Darling. You..."

Adam pushes him off, shaking his head. "I don't know you, I...I don't...I'm not anyone's."

"Adam..."

He hurries back into his apartment, locking the door fast, and his heart is beating wildly as he looks out to see Nigel still there with his ears down as he glares. 

"I know you're there, Adam," he says, nearly hissing, "I can hear your heart beating. You saved me last night, Darling, and I followed your scent all the way here. You might not understand, but....I'm not going anywhere."

Nigel leaves, at least from Adam's view, and he turns to put his hand over the scratch mark on his arm.

What did Nigel mean Adam was his?

And why, despite how scared Adam felt, did he want to see him again?

Okay rant incoming sdfggfds. I work at a tiny feminist library, and my supervisor signed me up for a Zoom lecture. I'm not gonna lie, I wanted to jump into a black hole I was so embarrassed. Only because my coworkers know nothing about fanfic or fandom and I'm the token trans, and the prof giving the presentation talked VERY in-depth for an hour about mpreg and omegaverse, and how this type of fanfic is technically activism because in them the male body is "open and penetrable." She mentioned Sherlock and Supernatural, too. Like, picture a fandom girlie just having fun and doing her thing, but make it Very Academic(tm).

BUT THE JOKE IS ON ME because there was not one single thing this (cis, mind you) woman said that I did not know. There were things the guests asked her about that she didn't know. Woman is making a career writing about trans headcanons and tee hee yaoi femboys but she had never heard about the operatic castrato or apparently read any relevant trans literature. I asked for book recommendations for the library and she struggled a lot before giving me a graphic novel I already own ("Genderqueer"), "Heartstopper," and "I am Jazz." I remember when Jazz Jennings came OUT, bro. But before all that, her first response was to walk me through HOW TO USE AO3. I obviously did not tell her I'm very familiar with the website and am an author on it. I think she thought I was asking because I wanted to do research on fanfiction or something.

Her name is Jennifer Duggan, if you want to read some of her publicized work on fanfic. It is interesting that this is being researched in academia now, I will say. She had some interesting and meaningful things to say about how trans fanfic breaks the barriers between cis and trans readers, how it can foster community between us, how it counts as activism (think, against J.K. Rowling), how it depicts trans bodies as beautiful and lovable, unlike most mainstream media depictions of trans stories, and she addressed how fandoms need to be more inclusive to QPOC and transnational stories.

Like I don't want to self-deprecate or make anyone else feel bad, but think about how embarrassing this is lol. I'm the only trans person in my workplace and in my classes --- despite being in gender studies, I know. There aren't that many of us after all ---, and seemingly the only person who knows anything about fandom. I will now have to talk about this presentation as part of my routine in-class presentation advertising the library. Why? I don't fucking know. We can't have fanfiction at the library. I don't talk about my online life outside of the computer, and no one knows that I'm not only a semi-known ao3 author, but that I write trans fanfiction LMAO. It's rather private, and I'm worried I'm becoming the spokesperson for all trans issues at my work and school. But also, screw it. I don't hate that. This lecture pretty much convinced me I have to go to grad school and fight some of these scholars though, so shiiiit.

I'm going to go off here just because I'm so frustrated.

So this drama all started when someone- a self-identified anti- posted a rant that I "wrote Halsin rape fantasy fiction." I was annoyed, as anyone would be, but even more because such a fiction didn't exist! But also, it sounded like a great fic, Halsin using a rape fantasy/consensual nonconsent to work through his Underdark traumas. So I said "you know what, I can't let the fake version of me you invented be cooler than the real me, can I?" And then I set to work plotting out Too Many Burdens to Bear, which would take about another month to be ready to post after that.

The group were angry at this, and soon after, they started a callout, cancelled me, harassed me, whatever word you want to use for this nonsense. They couldn't keep their story straight, from the start. Some of them claimed it was the simple fact that the fic was CNC that was wrong. Others, who were okay with CNC themselves but still wanted to have a reason to hate me, said my fic WASN'T CNC, and obviously that was the problem, it would be different "if" it was just CNC. (Then, when they were corrected, they....... never changed their tune.) Another said I was planning to write a fic about "Halsin being raped again" and had said "getting raped would help Halsin heal from his traumas."

It's like they're playing a game of telephone, but instead of changing a single word, the goal is to change the entire sentence.

Others insisted the problem was that I wrote it to "spite" the person who "only said they were uncomfortable with rape" (lol, then don't read it, you fucking dumbass!!!) I got told I was retraumatizing myself and others, that I didn't care about/fetishized rape, etc. They have since gone on to claim I posted the fic untagged, hoping to trigger the anti who started this.

These are the tags on the fic in question, which they would know if they bothered to LOOK at what they were criticizing.

Could this possibly be ANY better tagged? I even had someone who is squicked by PIV sex reach out to thank me because no one EVER warns for that. That's how above and beyond I went in avoiding squicking anyone.

Like, literally everything this group claimed about my actions being problematic falls apart with the most cursory check at the ACTUALITY of what has been posted.

And these people, who claim care SO much about rape, who care SO MUCH about survivors? Yesterday, Mish made a post about Neil (as in, Astarion's actor) getting sexually harassed, and one of these people replied that it was "hypocritical" to say so while supporting me, who writes CNC. When someone replied that this was about a real human, not fiction, they literally said they DIDN'T CARE. They care more about defending the honor of Halsin, a fictional survivor of rape, than they care about the real person who played Astarion, who is a REAL survivor of rape.

When Mish and I said we are both survivors of rape and sexual abuse, respectively, these people said we were "playing the survivor card" (an utterly vile thing to say). I received an anon questioning whether I was really sexually abused.

They also, at the same time as the initial bout of drama over my CNC fic, began calling me a pedophile because of an omegaverse Halsin headcanon I made. For those unaware, omegaverse is an AU with many related tropes. Which ones get used vary by the author, but they always include heats and animalistic behavior, and often include knotting, mpreg, themes of subjugation based on gender, breeding kink, and others. However, while the trope started as a kink one, it has since branched out, and some write fics without smut at all, instead focusing on gender dynamics, kidfic, or other aspects of the universe.

I made a headcanon that Halsin, who in that universe I headcanon as an omega- who, in omegaverse stories, can get pregnant, and have heats- would want children of his own. I headcanoned that after taking care of children at his commune after the ending, that this might trigger a heat for him.

A normal person would look at this and go "aw, Halsin has baby fever! Cute!"

These are not normal people, so they looked at it and went "ewww, this pedo thinks Halsin gets turned on by being around kids!"

They literally said this. While also admitting that they do not read omegaverse stories. Multiple people who do read them tried to explain that it's just how reproduction works in that AU, but this person just stuck their fingers in their ears and yelled "lalala HEATS ARE HORNY IF YOU WRITE HEATS IT'S ONLY TO BE HORNY HORNY HORNY! NOT LISTENING!"

After they accused me of being a pedophile for this, I fired back and said "if you can look at this headcanon and think it has anything to do with attraction to children, you're the pedophile." I should not have called them one back, and I apologize for it, but this person has since gone on to lie and play the victim, saying "I just said their tweet was a bit sus and they called me a pedophile FOR NO REASON." They also said that they "wouldn't have been so quick to call it pedo if [I] wasn't so open about being a proshipper."

If I wasn't so open about saying that fiction is not morality, you wouldn't have been so quick to say that my fiction represented my morality? Hmmm.

If you notice, their posts all have the same formulaic deception and manipulative slant to them: they will say something about the fiction I write/enjoy, or the characters I don't like, etc, with a personal attack against my character. When I respond, they will then claim to have been attacked, violently and without provocation, "just because" they (x), where (x) is the most blatant glossing over of their actions. Them calling me a pedophile became "just saying their tweet was sus." Them harassing me for weeks over a CNC fic that HADN'T EVEN BEEN WRITTEN YET was "just saying we aren't comfortable with rape." So uncomfortable with rape, remember, that they said they DIDN'T CARE about Neil being harassed, because CNC about Halsin was worse.

You would think these two things alone would be enough to utterly destroy this group's credibility; they are either blatant liars, or their perception of reality is so poor that nothing they say is to be trusted. Anyone who prioritizes a fictional character's rape over a real person's is not living in reality. Anyone who thinks baby fever is pedophilia should not be trusted on, well, anything. It would be like trusting a flat-earther to give geography lessons.

But unfortunately, people wanted to listen to them over Mish and I, and sadly, it's easy to see why. The antis positioned themselves so that if you disagreed with their harassment, you were "pro rape". And no one wants a label that toxic associated with them, so they jumped ship on principle. Even though Mish is the nicest person in the entire fandom and has never hurt anyone at all, even though Mish is an IRL advocate for rape survivors and against gender-based violence in her country and has thus done more for rape survivors than these people ever have or will. It doesn't matter to them.

Other equally bizarre accusations have been lobbed at us; I'm "lesbophobic" and "called all lesbians TERFs" (I called the rhetoric from a group of like five people TERF-ish, but since they think they represent all lesbians, they claimed it was against all lesbians- WHICH, by the way, is my identity as well. They are calling me a self-hating lesbian over this.)

This group has a history of starting harassment against people, then cry-bullying that the pushback they get is a form of lesbophoia; for example, a few months ago, they harassed a bi woman off of Twitter who asked them to stop being biphobic by calling it gross to ship Shadowheart, a canonically bisexual woman, with men. They branded this user lesbophobic and harassed her until she permanently deactivated. They posted that it was gross to ship Karlach with Dammon, too, and when a user, who is herself lesbian, headcanons Karlach as a lesbian, and doesn't ship her with Dammon chimed in to say why OTHERS ship it, they attacked her too. They attacked the actor for Rolan for sharing/supporting a fan petition for Rolan to be romanceable. They called Dave, Halsin's actor, a creep for sharing NSFW art of Halsin on his page, and tried to insinuate he was a pedophile (saying they wouldn't be surprised if he had a scandal like "that Genshin actor," who, for those who don't know, was found to have groomed a child online.)

They claimed that I "called everyone who doesn't like Halsin ableist", when what was actually said was that IF we call everyone who doesn't like Minthara lesbophobic because a lot of her fans are lesbians (which is a thing that one of them had just said), THEN using the same logic, we could say that hating Halsin is ableist because a lot of his fans are autistic. (Sidenote: this group of people repeatedly mocked my special interest (making meta essays) after being told it was my special interest, which is pretty gross, to me.)

It genuinely boggles my mind that a group of people can be so toxic to the actors and still given a platform in the fandom. This is entirely new behavior to me- even in the most toxic fandom's I've been in or rubbernecked on, harassing the actors was always considered the line not to cross and would make you persona non grata. It was the one thing everyone could agree on as unacceptable. Yet these people are openly attacking Dave's character and are still not only listened to when they make up allegations against people, but they are well-respected in the fandom. Either people don't think harassing an actor is a big deal anymore, these fans secretly AGREE with the harassment and slander against him, or (most generous explanation) they don't know who they're actually supporting here.

These people gleefully mocked my abuse from my mother. I said that some of Minthara's abusive actions (poisoning a romanced player without her consent) reminded me of similar actions my mom did, and are part of my aversion to the character. I posted this untagged- I even censored Minthara's name so that her fans wouldn't find it. But because they were cyberstalking me so obsessively, they QRTed it and proceeded to bring it up multiple times to snark about "the essential oils". When someone called them out and asked if they really thought it was funny, they answered, without hesitation, yes. They said that I had already "mocked my own abuse" by bringing up how Minthara triggers memories of her, so they therefore had every right to laugh at the bodily harm I faced when my mother would deliberately cause me asthma attacks by forcing me to inhale essential oils. Because I said that a fictional character's similar actions triggered memories of it. That was worthy of mocking to them.

So they support survivors of rape and abuse who have triggers related to fiction, unless that survivor is a survivor of child abuse who is triggered by their favorite character, in which case they deserve to be mocked. I guess they don't believe in supporting survivors who have trigger reactions to fiction after all... what a surprise. Almost like they never cared about anything they claimed to.

They're actually remarkably transparent about not actually caring about ANY issue they claim to champion. They claim to be fighting for rape survivors while harassing not one but two survivors from the fandom into mental breakdowns (the tweet about my mom was so bad it made me have a flashback, and their harassment of Mish did similar to her) and saying they DON'T CARE about Neil's sexual harassment because fiction about Halsin is more important. They claim to oppose lesbophobia while repeatedly attacking lesbians who disagree with them on anything from shipping to whether queer male sexuality is inherently predatory. I could go on.

Somehow, no matter how blatant it is that they don't actually care about anything, and are just using fake moralizing as a vehicle for sadism, people still keep taking them at face value. Again, I get it. They have positioned themselves as fighting against rape and abuse, so by extension, they have positioned it so that anyone who is against them is liable to be accused of supporting rape and abuse. It's a great system for them, really; bullying is a behavior that would otherwise be reviled, but by framing everyone they don't like as a bad person, as an existential threat to marginalized communities (who, conveniently, always have their own marginalized identities ignored until it becomes convenient to bring it up again to harass them for it), they turn their bullying into not only something acceptable, but into a moral act to be commended. A moral obligation, even, because don't pedos deserve to be hunted for sport? (This is the same reason why the alt-right is obsessively pedojacketing the entire LGBT community as they move to censor queer fiction, for the record.)

I don't know what else to say besides that I really, really hope that people are waking up to that group's nonsense, or at least that they will soon, and will realize that fiction is not reality, and that that group of known disingenuous liars and manipulators are being... disingenuous liars and manipulators, yet again.

Unfortunately, it's too late since they've already chased Mish out of the fandom, and I will honestly never forgive that group of people and their enablers for it. But I have hope that maybe the rest of the fandom will come around, especially because, as all of us who have experience with antis know, they are never going to stop. They aren't going to stop targeting people for everything from making a harmless mod that turns Scratch into Astarion to saying it's okay to ship Karlach/Dammon or Shadowheart/men to writing a fic about Halsin using kink to explore his trauma from being enslaved to being an actor for the show who retweets NSFW art of his character to making a headcanon that Astarion wants to dance with Tav to making an omegaverse headcanon... I could go on and on.

Sorry for the novel, and I hope this is the last post I make about this drama, but I am so beyond tired and frustrated. This hurt Mish deeply- the nicest person in the entire fandom- and seeing the raw sadism from her bullies, sadism that is being praised, makes me feel physically ill, honestly.

I feel like you can sort of tell how long (or not) someone has existed in fannish spaces by how outraged they get about things like this. Like rings in a tree trunk lol. I've been in so many fandoms. At least one, but often multiple at the same time, since I was a teenager. I've seen just. Everything.

Sex pollen. Mpreg. Incest. Monster fucking. Tentacles. Pairings like Snape/Hermione that would be crazy abusive and illegal if they were real. Wild kinks. The babygirlification of all kinds of villains. So much RPF (the 'I sincerely believe they are secretly a couple' kind and the 'this is fictional but it's fun to imagine they're in love' kind.)

You learn to just scroll past shit you don't like or unfollow people or filter tags. The tldr of fandom is that humans are weird as fuck. And creative, and unhinged, and traumatized, and talented. And amazing. And every single thing that you clutch your pearls about 'well surely someone doesn't want to read/write THAT!' - someone does. Probably lots of people do. And those people are perfectly normal. In their offline lives, they're parents and siblings and they have jobs and friends and they go about their lives and they don't cause any harm. And that's the sticking point. There's this really concerning, frankly highly Evangelical idea that if someone enjoys the wrong kind of fiction, they are obviously a Bad Person. But nothing is that simple, and thought crimes aren't real, and you definitely have some thoughts or ideas that someone else would find fucked up. You don't have to like every kind of fic that exists. I certainly don't. But shaming people for their harmless fantasies about fictional characters is so boring. I saw Goody Proctor enjoying a Toxic Ship! Good for you, I'll alert the pope.

General disclaimer: I'm still not good at drawing babies/young children and I'm not much of a writer personally so sorry if things are clunky.

John got home sometime around mid-November, laying low and skipping around the states altering his appearance a bit until he felt the heat died down enough he could return to Louisiana with no issues. Once he got home he was greeted by a very intense Lincoln alone at Sammy's while Dani was at Nicki's being watched. Lincoln was feeling a lot of stuff at once, like anger, but also just holding back emotions a bit, hiding at first that he was happy to see John coming through the door.

Obviously things got pretty intense emotionally a bit after John got into the house, but things cooled down (or heated up lol) and Lincoln immediately started teasing him for his more "messy" appearance, said he looked like a hippie.

Adjusting back home was pretty comforting for a bit, John's happy he can just stay inside, catch up with Dani and be lazy. Already he was naturally anti-social so staying in wasn't that much of an issue, just watching T.V and most he does is if Lincoln needs his help on something work related.

Wasn't too long until John started feeling sick again, waking up early to run to the bathroom, or accidentally throwing up at the worst times. He immediately had a "oh this better not be what I think it is again" and after a visit to Lincoln's personal doctor, yep, it was exactly what he thought it was.

Despite appearing angry, he was more annoyed and just wanted to give Lincoln a hard time. They were both fine with this because John's going to be more a homebody now and Lincoln can support them all. Dani, despite being 2, seemed pretty happy with the news, she kept saying "baby!" after being told.

John definitely wants to get serious about finally getting a hysterectomy after this kid though. Still kicking himself for not getting one earlier but oh well. Like the last pregnancy he was moody and wasn't allowed to smoke or drink, fell back into annoying Lincoln by popping gum around him constantly.

Rhys Clay was born August 10th 1972, Lincoln Clay and John Donovan his parents and Danielle Clay his older sister. Not named after anyone again but both parents were looking over names and just got attached to that one. Once again the baby was delivered at home with the same doctor as last time, only difference is that Dani could meet her new little brother as soon as they were able to.

Lincoln was very happy being a father of 2 now, though it was dawning on him that he needs an actual house for them now, but he has some time before both kids are big enough to get their own rooms. John feels a little weird knowing he's technically had 3 kids already but gets serious about getting a hysterectomy a bit after going back to normal after Rhys is born. Both John and Lincoln have to settle with a story now to tell people especially if John is seen walking around with both kids. Lincoln finally comes out about it all to the other 2 underbosses (since Nicki already knows), he's a father of 2 and the other parent is a trans man who happens to be the gangs advisor that's been working from the shadows ever since the beginning.

Vito and Cassandra don't take too kindly knowing that their bosses advisor is a now ex-C.I.A agent, and it does break out into a big argument between the underbosses, Lincoln and Donovan. Lincoln being so used to this now, he was able to get the argument under control by telling John to keep his mouth shut and telling the other 2 if he wasn't trustworthy, then why on earth would he willingly raise 2 children with him? It seems to work.

Some time passes: Dani starts school, shows a bit of an artistic streak while also showing signs of being very stubborn when she feels like it. Rhys shows signs of being autistic and is nonverbal until he's nearly 4 years old. The Clay Crime Family starts doing some good for the local area, renovating and building places, but also expanding their operations. Lincoln is basically untouchable now, which means his family is safe and sound as long as their around him.

John still goes around the city with both kids and visiting Robert, but can't seem to stop Robert from making snarky comments about both him and his kids, meanwhile Father James notices a lot of similarities between Rhys and Lincoln from back when he first came into the orphanage. Both very quiet boys but different circumstances.

Donovan takes a good break from his "side project", he's letting the heat die down since the whole senate hearing incident and he wants those folks he sent that message out for to get a false sense of security and think nothing more is going to happen, but John is planning on striking when they least expect it. He's not going to act for awhile though, doesn't wanna miss any birthdays and still be present during the kid's childhoods, also Rhys still needs a lot of attention.

Dani and Rhys are very close, and Dani always tries to get him involved with games she plays, Rhys is pretty quiet still and shy around new people but does start talking more to his family and other adults that come around, mostly Father James or Nicki Burke.

Rhys is the last kid and John tells Lincoln if he wants more, he can just figure that all out himself.

Both kids are still in development, character wise. I have some thoughts about Dani in her teen years, like going on with her friends a lot, as for Rhys, I'm still wondering what personality he has, though I see him getting into puzzles a lot. I'm open to any thoughts honestly, writing kids isn't really a strength for me and these are my first fan kid oc's for a piece of media I like.

But yeah, that's my cringe au! Been cooking it for awhile and finally got the guts to release it to the wild, like I said previously.

i’m sorry i’m so so sorry i’m not laughing at you! i swear! it’s just hilarious that my entire adult life i’ve thought omegaverse (a/b/o) is a massively popular fanfic trope that is commonly consumed and has widely accepted word building and yet i bring it over here and everyone is like “hannah…...what the actual fuck”

okay, crash course in omegaverse (alpha/beta/omega dynamics) under the cut because very much nsfw

omegaverse is essentially an au premise where instead of evolving into similar social structures as primates, the human race evolved socially and biologically similar to canids.

now, stick with me here, this gives society a sort of hierarchy. you've got the dominant alphas, the neutral betas, and the submissive omegas. this is very broad and not at all true for every fic obviously, i feel like each writer puts their own spin on the universe, but it is the basic essential.

now, unlike wolves, where alphas mate alphas and omegas never get to mate at all, the au premise for omegaverse (humans/werewolves/etc.) is that alpha and omegas are a mated pair. think MFEO type mating. TYPICALLY we see a male alpha mating either a male or a female omega. there is a subset of the genre that is highly interested in mpreg and heterogamy and gender-fluidity. which is all valid and interesting and wildly creative especially when it comes to mlm pairings.

but i'm getting off track.

anyways. the other premise of the au is ruts and heats. all designations (alpha, beta, & omega) can have normal, regular, completely lucid sex.... except when an omega goes into heat, things get a little... dubious

the whole idea of a heat is when an omega is most fertile. typically this is a female with female sexual organs and/or a male with both sexual organs. when a heat starts, their bodies send out all types of pheromones and things to attract a mate, typically an alpha, and they also get real real sick if they don't ... uh ... copulate nonstop during the heats. so one half of the trope is the submissive character literally writhing and shivering in pain because they need the D that bad.

all of this then comes together and triggers an alpha's rut. rut is when the alpha, having chosen/won/claimed their omega mate, get's real protective, horny, and sometimes even violent in a primal urge to give their mate the D. so the other half of the trope is making sure no one hurts their babygirl and/or tries to steal them.

when an alpha ruts, they also are capable of knotting. which genuinely is exactly what you are thinking it is. there is a little ball/bulge/knot of flesh that expands at the base of an alpha's erection and slots itself into a soft, malleable cavity in an omega vagina and keeps them linked for a span of time until the knot recedes (think until the erection softens post climax).

for me personally, i have read some a/b/o that i've enjoyed but i really didn't get *into* it until i read some genderswapped omegaverse with the #nontraditional a/b/o tag. this when the set rules of the universe are bent heavily. for example if spring fever was set in a traditional omegaverse, ginny would have her female reproductive organs as well as retractable penis. harry would have his penis but also he would have a vagina, cervix, uterus, etc. and then ginny would get him pregnant... which isn't bad or wrong or anything but just felt extra complicated for the story i was trying to tell, especially since i knew i wanted the a/b/o stuff to be practically evolved out and relatively rare... it seemed a little too much for the story if they were to grow new reproductive organs as well as experience fully fledged ruts and heats for the first times in their lives.

there is also the idea of gender roles within a hierarchy like this and since i knew i wanted this society to mirror a modern au, i elected to make ginny an alpha (a traditionally masculine role) and harry an omega (the traditionally feminine role) to play on the idea of patriarchy and equality. which honestly will probably end up being a throw away line in the actual story but it's what i've enjoyed most about omegaverse fics that ended up in my bookmarks so i'm using it as a foundation for mine too.

in conclusion, i would say my particular story is about as vanilla as you can get and still have it be omegaverse, but that's okay, because the smut as character development is really what i was striving for anyway... not necessarily the au procreation aspect.

plus harry as a true submissive omega never felt accurate, just like ginny as a possessive, violent alpha would feel a touch over the top if i am trying to stay true to them as characters.

HOWEVER, harry begging for literally any affection from her felt too good to pass up, which is why i chose to designate them like i did.

a son's duty by saintsamantha: this is the Jack I want, obsessed with Sam, sort of creepy horror child...the whole fic has me going sicko mode

Always By Your Side by threadofgrace (phoenix_and_the_ash): this fic is so eerie and transports the sense of unreality so well. And I Iove Sam and Dean in their dysfunctional glory. Also this is a cat fic but in an evil way. A bit undertagged, but the summary gives you more of an idea what this fic is.

(and we all end up alone) by Lise: I'm a Lise fangirl and was really struggling with what fic of theirs to choose. They write Sam & Lucifer so well, but surprisingly what currently gets me going most is a fic that barely features Lucifer. It's Sam in the end!verse and it's heartwrenching not because it's all bleak, but because Sam does experience some happiness (for a time). It ends before Detroit, but you can really see how it eventually leads to him giving up and saying yes.

Ellie's Giant by cordelia_gray: a rare piece of h/c in this sicko list. It just warms my heart so much whenever I read it. (But also the implications are horrifying if you want to go there). Plus it has POV Outsider which I love.

Wire Inside Me by merle_p: this fic rewired my brain the first time I read it. The concept of mpreg as (body) horror blew my mind and Sam being Jack's biological parent is the shit. I re-read it because I wanted to know if I would still enjoy it now, having lost interest in wincest a while ago, and I really, really did. On a different level than I used to lol but - anyway.
