The real problem with all existing tabletop RPG adaptations of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise is that in not one of them are your core numeric stats "Teenage", "Mutant", "Ninja" and "Turtle".
#gaming#tabletop roleplaying#tabletop rpgs#game design#media#television#comics#teenage mutant ninja turtles#tmnt#obviously raphael has the highest rating in 'teenage'#donatello's best stat is 'mutant'#leonardo's is 'ninja'#and michelangelo excels at 'turtle'

Back in the ’90s, a big part of the local punk scene in North Jersey that I bounced around in was centered around street punk and oi bands like Headwound, Niblick Henbane and The Wretched Ones. Their music was stripped down, catchy and their lyrics reflected a mix of working-class life, light hooliganism and, in the case of Those Unknown, grassroots leftist politics. One thing that none of them struck me as? Nerdy.
Fast-forward to 2023 when I stumbled across Harvest, by Philly’s Poison Ruin. Self-described peace punks, the album is a leftist working-class manifesto filtered through the aesthetics of medieval peasantry. It gets weirder! The tunes are gruff head-kickers with a strong sense of ’90s-era production, but there are all these clearly dungeonsynth-influenced interludes and, well, come on, look at that cover. Spooky chainmail guy with a sickle, black on yellow — it’s basically a MÖRK BORG zine. Can’t help but notice that flail is real similar to the one in the Gnoll logo, too…
Poison Ruin reminded me how much I liked aggro-infused music, so I went hunting for more. Most of the stuff I dug up hewed to the ’90s standard of slice-of-life working class lyrics and aesthetics, though many have a strong mix of post-punk and new wave influences, a la later-era Blitz, which is also surprising and intriguing. But some bands have decided to explore even stranger trails.
Enemic Interior, out of Barcelona, mixes oi and post-punk, and their album art, by David Soto, clearly evokes the look of old school RPGs — that ghost on II (2022) is very reminiscent of the ghost from the original Monster Manual — and could easily front dungeonsynth albums. Same for Castillo but more so — the sleeve of their self-titled EP (2020) boasts Sutherland’s green dragon and frost giant from the MM, and the Paladin in Hell from the Players Handbook (I can’t place the wizard). And for Pete’s sake, just look at that cover for Lost Legion’s Beyond the Concrete Veil (2024). It’s not explicitly tied to RPGs, but it could totally be an illustration in Realm of Chaos. And in a million years, I’d never have expected to hear oi this catchy and stompy to also be so entangled with science fiction, psychedelia and Aleister Crowley, but here we are. And, mind-blowingly, when I ordered the Mutant Genes 7-inch, Derek Atkinson at the label was already following my Instagram and popped the vinyl in a custom hand-stenciled sleeve featuring the text of the gelatinous cube entry from the Monster Manual. Fuckin’ wild.
Does this mean anything? I dunno! Medieval fantasy, and the notion of the fantasy dungeon in particular, can be a pretty handy visual shorthand for brutality, whether physical or metaphorical. Just look at all those poor adventurers getting eaten by monsters in the original Monster Manual! Does the frost giant and his huge ax on the Castillo sleeve represent the oppressive, exploitative forces of capitalism? Are frost giants with huge axes just cool now? Two things can be true simultaneously. And, regardless of intent, it’s interesting how the aesthetics have shifted in 30 years. Maybe fantasy is having a moment of broad appeal reminiscent of the last golden era in the ’70s.
P.S.: And, yes, true, the Misfits were into nerd shit way before any of this stuff, but I think horror nerd shit has always had more cachet than fantasy nerd shit? Perhaps because it maps more readily to established masculine norms; there was a big gulf in 198X between Danzig watching Plan 9 from Outer Space and Danzig copping to running a weekly D&D game).

Have you played MUTANTS IN THE NOW ?
By Julian Kay

Mutants in the Now is a retro modern retake on the mutant animal role-playing games long past and left behind by licensing. Mutants fight to survive, thrive, and make the world better for themselves and humanity.
In other words, it's an extremely crunchy clone of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Other Strangeness albeit with a more modern take on mechanics. Semi-random guided character creation where players must spend points to mutate regular animals into anthropomorphic cartoon ones. Character creation itself is a fun game.

Dedan, Guardian of Zone 1 and Metal

The Zone of Alma oversees all raw material procurement in the Queen's lands, whether that's mining, agriculture, or recovery, which is then sent to Vesper for processing. Its wrathful Guardian, Dedan, has ruled it with an iron fist since its inception. While the suns of untold years has baked his skin just the same as a human, he doesn't appear to be one like the Elsen he keeps under his boot. He's as overworked as they are, his teeth and nails overgrown due to neglect because of time, time, time. There's just not enough damn TIME for everything he needs to do so he cuts out what he considers the least important events in his schedule, putting himself last to serve the Queen first. Rumors once abounded about how Dedan had a sunnier disposition, bringing hopes his sour mood might wane someday, but now they're just the stuff of barely-uttered legends on woefully short breaks.
I kinda feel like I Disneyfied him but you know how many naked molerat anthros I've seen in general. zero. fite me ignore the fact that I haven't actively looked for them shhh
yoinked his palette from one of the bits of art Mortis Ghost drew that depicted the Guardians in color because it makes him look kinda rusty
Anyway some little trivia nibbles:
heavy smoker. not like he can get cancer, so
he used to be just as pale as the Batter is and and now he's the posterchild for a lifetime in a tanning booth
has no front teeth for his "inner" mouth, because they make up the large chompers outside of it toothless grandpa Dedan lul
he can open his mouth very, very, TERRIFYINGLY wide if he needs to and has a biteforce like nothing else in the Zones
his body being metal and kind of rough means you can strike a match off him. he'll instantly put you in the ground for it tho
for the same reason he's like a living magnesium firestarter and can start fires off of himself with friction such as by rubbing his fingers
theoretically could be scruffed like a naked molerat can be, but because he's absolutely shredded all the muscle mostly prevents that. in the past Enoch has settled for grabbing him by the collar of his coat instead (Dedan has always hated this)
dislikes the sun/light and his eyesight suffers quite a bit during the day, and generally hates being above ground to begin with, so he def likes the mines the most
an old rumor says he wrestled with a rampaging Moloch bull once until it settled down, but nobody can agree if it took a few hours or a few days for him to calm it that way. discussing these old legends about their boss is one of the ways Elsen trapped in the mines will pass the time while hopefully awaiting rescue, and sometimes the debates can get heated (for them, anyway)
#off game#off mortis ghost#off dedan#off the rpg#luparaneo art#did u kno that naked molerats are absolutely fascinating little guys#maybe someday I'll whip up a more 'accurate' Dedan but for now it's#(tune of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles theme) giant naked molerat man GIANT NAKED MOLERAT MAAAN#I'm still trying to figure out the Why#my thought process is everything starts with Rule of Cool and I just bullshit the reason later#anyway in this AU the Moloch/Belial/Abbadon meats come from massive demonic cows because I think it would be awesome#maybe like the size of bison at least. they're actually really gentle giants tho for the most part so Elsen can handle them

The farther down you go, the simpler the ruins get. Our castles of cut stone and mortar stand atop our ancestors’ town of clay bricks, which was built on the earthen ramparts of their ancestors’ wooden hill fort.
Not all of the people who lived here left records. There were silent populations who lost the use of writing and had to spend a century inventing it again. But they always made their mark with tools or buildings or the things they threw away. The royal chronicler is working on a timeline of the groups who called this place home.
But nobody had ever seen ruins like those we found, working down through the deepest dungeon and clearing a collapsed shaft. Nobody had ever read the language on the cracked walls of smooth stone. It took all our priests, historians, and clerks to interpret it - the words had common roots with some of our languages, and the pictures helped. What it said… well, the Queen had the most succinct response: “Why would anyone choose to build here, if they read that?” After all, this is not a place of honor.
Idea: play Mutant Crawl Classics in a setting with some established towns and nations. What kind of cool cultures, economies, and politics can you develop in a world where people live with mysterious powers and dangerous creatures?
