Is it ok if you can write a mcu!thor x gamer!reader where he hears her talking about gow!thor and how he's her favorite and thought she was talking about him until he catches her playing god of war and see's his counterpart. I just wanna see how this would go down.
A/n: I love Thor! He’s to precious, went with a Chuby!Thor.
I also apologize if this sucks, I wrote half of this at 4am on break.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You loved Thor, how could you not. He was kind, funny though he did have this edge to him too, a passion that you couldn’t put your finger on. Maybe that’s why you were so drawn to Thor in the new God of War game.
How that character became one of your favorites in the video game you two would often spend time playing. Gripping your phone you relaxed into the couch, chatting on the phone with your friend.
“Imagine getting railed by him, his so tall.”
Peaking around the corner, he watched you intently. We’re you talking about him? You had to have been, what other Thors did you know? None! Because he is the only Thor.
“And that red hair, I swear those developers knew what they were doing when they designed all these men….oh come on I do not.” Cheeks warming you then gasped as Thor suddenly appeared in front of you. “I’ll call you back.”
“I do not have red hair” Thor wrinkled his nose then pouted. “I do not understand, you are singing my praise yet I do not have red hair.”
Blinking you were trying to figure out what he was talking about until it hit you. Laughing softly you patted the couch which he reluctantly sat down as you turned your ps5 on. Grabbing your control your clicked on the God Of war game and eagerly started to explain all the characters and Thor.
“Isn’t he cute.”
Huffing, Thor scowled at the TV then looked towards you. “Do you love this Thor.”
“What?”Turning your attention to Thor, your Thor you let out a sigh seeing his pout. It was cute, you never though the man would be jealous over a video game character. “No! Thor, he’s just a character in a game I like.”
Placing your hand on his cheek you gave him a gentle smile letting your thumb glide across his skin, you wanted to make sure he knew that you loved him. “I love you okay. Yes you’re not over 7 feet but to me you’re the perfect height and you already have his body you teased.” Shifting your body so you were sitting on his lap as your fingers wove through his dirty blonde hair. “And I think you look much better as a blonde.” Resting your head against his you sighed as he tightened his hold on you.
“Can we have sex.”
Laughing you placed a light kiss to his lips. “How can I say no to that God Of Thunder.”

So, I rewatched Kinnporsche for the 3rd time
Tumblr media
(I was sick the last 2 days so I had to watch sth to brighten up my mood)
And now I wanna share some stuff with u guys (yes it's that time again xD)
I still love the first meeting of Kinn and Porsche. That Bar, that watch thingy. Still love how badass kinn looks in the first ep. Still makes me fall for him sm.
Still hate Korn sm. Yes doesn't change.
I always scream when I see Big and Chan interact with eo. I know it's a ghost ship but I love it haha. (RiP! :/)
I love Arm and Pol sm. They are so cute and funny - I wish they would kiss. Best scene: when they hide at the door when Porsche confesses his love for kinn in the room with Korn and the others.
Tankhun is still fabulous. I love his outfits. And I always have to laugh at his: who killed Elisabeth and Sébastien! Legendary.
Porsches mental health agenda is played so good by Apo that I always cry when I see it. Breaks my heart sm.
Porsche as the minor family heir: I mean he doesn't wanna do it obv but man do I love his green suit. And I love seeing him with power!
Kimchay aka my heartbreak without a light on the horizon. God everytime I wanna scream at Kim and say u mf aaaah! Happy end still needed (u know this already but its worth to mention - again!)
Badass Pete is still my favorite. Ep 10 fight with Porsche. Or that crazy smile in the sex dungeon wow. I wanna see more. And obv P'Jakapan naled the bathtub scene. That is so heartbreaking it gets me everytime.
Vegas. There could be a separate post about him. Bc everytime I watch some scenes. I see him more. I see what Bibel did there. I feel his anger. I mean it doesn't give him the right to do shitty things but...imagine your cousin is always better than you and your father is the dummest asshole ever. And I always remember how complex he is when I see that scene at the pool when he wants to kill himself. This scene gives me goosebumps everytime. So fucking talented. Bibs supremacy.
Yok, Erica and the other Girl. I wanna see more badass women.
Tay, Time. I love Tay. He is such a cool character. And I wanna say fuck u time haha.
Mile Phakphum is so sexy with his hair string down and his robes and ombre suits. Don't come at me but wow. Apo has so much privilege to see that often xD
Jeff Satur is a God. Yes I know I said it often but his voice. I will never recover.
Macau and Chay are babies omg. Look at Ta and Code now. Wow they did gow so much.
The Vegaspete ending. God I love that ending sm. The soft kisses. The I don't run away. I wanna see more. Give it to me.
The season 2: God it's been so long. I hope there will be some news at the new year event. God pls.
Tumblr media
Still obsessed with all the characters, the actors and I can't cope. Jep. That's my life forever now haha.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that's it for now. Thanks for listening to me - again! See ya soon (it won't take long anyway u might know now haha)

Make me choose meme
Characters: Your bosses
Literally anything else: Your AUs
:)
I regret my decision /lh /j
Characters: my bosses
Ohhh hhyou motherfucker I have to pick! I love em all! I love them all so much. .. ...
I gotta say Boss) he was the first, the one I played through all the games with my first run around, hell he's what kick started the entirety of GOW&R. I adore Lady, and if I could choose more than fucking one I'd choose them both. and if Knight counted, I'd be choosing her too.
Literally anything else: my AUs
HRHHRNNNRNRNNGNRNNGNRNHHRRRRR-
I Am The Boss.
I love GoW&R, it's the one where most if not all of the lore stems from, it is my baby, it is the one I'm making a fucking COMIC about (Blightfall & Bleeding purple are getting comics too, but GoW&R is the one I'm like... WORKING working on.)
But, if I had to choose a favorite, IATB. Because I really like the idea of a universe where Johnny is forced to be the boss. I adore that idea that loss broke him so much where he took the torch, even if he really didn't want to.
Cause IATB Gat is fucking traumatized dude. Lost both Aisha & Kira in the same day. Then later, after a week of convincing himself otherwise, found Lupus (the old boss) dead, and only after that realized he was in love with Lupus. It fucks him up! It gave him a panic attack disorder he can't control because everything he'd been ignoring or suppressing vomited up at once! Like, it makes him distance himself from everyone around him, to the point even if someone can tell something is wrong, he can deflect it easily! He completely gave up on any type of relationship: casual intimacy, friendships, romantic relationships, familial relationships, all of them.
Cause he's fucking scared! He thinks he deserves to hurt!
And then Jake (Yes the same one from GoW&R, being a voidwalker just changed his life path so drastically that he has an entirely different body build) crashes in and ruins that distance by just... being so fucking persistent. And because Gat wanted to 'keep an eye on' (he did not. He wanted to kill him. Nurse disagreed. And Nurse is currently the only one with a vague closeness to him. So he, with a fuss, listened to Nurse.) him after Jake tried to break into his apartment. Cause while Nurse (Lady, in this universe) won't let him kill Jake (He likes the company), that doesn't mean he can't throw him around a bit (A lot.). And then it backfires because Jake
Decided to be petty and take 'never be let out of sight' as literal as he could and glue himself to Gat's side as much as possible. Which turns into them becoming friends. Which turns into them dating. (Can you guess who develops feelings for who first? Can you guess who realizes it first? Can you guess when the confession happens? Hint: It's not Jake, It's not Gat, and it's not without nearly dying.)
Can see Kira (Deer) and Lupus. Because Valor made Kira a voidwalker after her death, but since she was still... dead, it didn't bring her back, it just made her a part of the void; So only other voidwalkers can see her. And then she proceeded to capture Lupus's soul, so he's now the only ghost in known existence. And also a part of the void. So both of them have been watching Gat decline since their deaths and been able to do nothing about it, cause they're not IN the mortal plane. So when someone who can SEE THEM waltz's in, they are very eager to work with him, even as his goals change. (from just doing his job, to genuine concern) Not to fix him single handily, but to actually get him on the road to not being a fucking mess.
There's. I have a lot to say on the story and why I love them. I need to draw their redesigns (I do got picrews if anyone's interested)

Watch "When 2.18m / 7'2'' (157kg/346lbs) Kratos meets his fans :D!" on YouTube
This is what our son will look like and yes Bob birdies and he's just up as Kratos as publicity stunt and advertising campaign is making money with it a lot of money and they'll probably be a movie and that's something 19 and other things come from this and we think he's right.
Thor Freya
It's an amazing activity and I call a duty that I'm doing it and I'm having a good time and they're saying what does it mean I said what are you think it means and I said we don't know I said we're having a comeback and we're getting bigger and he says oh I get it we're big in Russia they came over and said we are big in Russia and my only a foot taller than them but like you but wow these people are short. I was almost nervous or horrified and I'm serious saying you look big next to them and you're not that big and they spass out and we do the right thing now I was in trouble the whole time. You can talk to him you can get away with it it's true but they're hissing and saying things the whole time it was horrible I heard he's like you he couldn't get a job doing anything so I suggest you to do this and it's probably jobs there in the video game arena for you guys so I suggesting things and they went off and asked they got hired but boy what a nightmare it was before that but that's what it was too I'm not working practically anything. They all started laughing a little it said what the hell is really going on cuz these clones. So I got to work and stuff in the city you want to get in trouble doing it and they're pain in the ass and I said don't talk about we're having fun and that's what I was
Bob Burdys
So I got to do it it's got some support from Max and some support from warlock and they figure out what he's saying is true these clones are digging into them and use just about anything and this kind of thing is one of their favorites they say, the turnaround and said we're going to use your Darth Maul character in other than dig in to you. I respect that because they've been doing it for years
Apollo and Goddess Wife and yes I known as the God of War and it is because of Mars and I'm seeing it is because his wife has come here. And I'm the Goddess of war and I do see it is because she's here in her presence but it is causing us to step it up and that's our game to step up our game and we're doing it now . Goddess Wife of Apollo

A new tend I'm noticing is that there seems to be a growing contingent of people who show open contempt for the source material ("it's CREATIVE FREEDOM unlike some old drawing" etc) and I'd say next to people drawn by "marketable little girls" (both groups overlap tbf) this might be the single worst development - but then you said yourself that a lot of media using mythology seems to hate it, so I suppose it's no surprise it's a thing
Yes, my favorite example of the latter still being God of War 2018 and its need to warp a god like Baldur into a "totally fucking twisted, man" character just to set up his death for Terrible Dad via a series of square button presses. They love to make money off of mythology but seriously adapting it is apparently creatively "stifling" for a nuance-free mass-market action game like GoW.
I have of course seen the "creative freedom" defenders as well. Not sure what to make of them other than another brand of the "I need to defend what I like" cohort. Maybe it's not as much contempt as source accuracy isn't important to them. I do lament when Atlus' basic messaging of what demons are misses the mark.

First of all:
🍃 How are you today, sweety?
🍃 What do you think is Levi's greatest develop?
🍃 Fav breakfast? ^^
Luuuv you blog, you're totally an angel! 💛
Anon!!!!! Hello!!!!! It's morning for me right now and your questions are very fitting ^^ answering them below the cut as usual!!!!
And thank you darling, you are an amazing absolute angel too 💖
How are you, sweety?
I'm doing very well anon, thank you!!!! 🤗💕 it's morning right now and I'm just lazing around thinking of all the things I'm going to do today!!
Also, I'm going to spend my morning writing!! 🌻
What do you think is Levi's greatest development?
Hmm good question!!! Instead of saying what's Levi's greatest development, I want to talk about him as a whole instead! Please be warned of verbal diarrhoea haha, and I hope I answered this question correctly T_T
I feel that Levi as a character is really well-developed and there's so many angles to cover on him!!!! I enjoy analysing Levi on a psychological level haha because I'm a psychology student and I can't help it but psychoanalyse him all the time.
There are so many things about Levi that I love, but one thing I love about him is how he didn't let his childhood and upbringing affect the way he is when he's an adult.
In psychology, childhood experiences usually shape a person's behaviour and personality, and a person will carry these attributes into adulthood.
As a child, Levi was brought up in poverty and faced bouts of starvation, and had very bad living conditions that were definitely not conducive for bringing up a child. When Kuchel died, Kenny took care of Levi and essentially showed him a life of violence and self-survival. He wasn’t on the receiving end of love and affection, and what he got from Kenny was definitely not parental love.
Yes Levi as an adult did still have violent tendencies, but you can also see him caring and showing concern to people around him even though he didn't receive such affection from others.
This reminds me of the whole nature vs nurture debate and I feel like Levi is a really good case study to conduct an extensive study on :p
Also, despite growing up in an underprivileged environment, Levi is extremely talented and skilled on the odmg. This is one of the greatest asset he has and he has honed his craft on the odmg to perfection.
What I learnt is that your background and upbringing do not determine your future. This also teaches me that with hard work, talent, and practice, everyone and anyone can succeed in life.
Don't let your past hinder what your future can bring!
Favourite breakfast?
Oh I have so many!!!! I love both Asian and Western breakfast hahaa but if I had to choose, my favourite Western breakfast is an English Breakfast or an American Breakfast!!!!
And as for something Asian, I have so many!!! But, one of my favourite Chinese breakfast is porridge and fried dough sticks hehe. Here's a sample!!
Tumblr media
The fried dough sticks are called 油条 (you tiao) in Chinese and they are so delicious hehe, they look similar to churros but are very crispy!! You can dip them in coffee, or in soy milk, or eat it as it is!!! My favorite way is to eat them with porridge.
Another breakfast I love is dim sum!!!
Tumblr media
Dim sum is Cantonese for 点心 (dian xin) and they are very common in countries like Hong Kong!!! They're meant to be bite-sized and served piping hot in bamboo steamer baskets, and usually eaten during tea time. But nowadays we can eat dim sum any time of the day. There are sooooo many things you can eat and urgh, the options are endless.
My favourites are prawn dumplings (虾饺 xia jiao or har gow in Cantonese), steamed rice rolls (猪肠粉 zhu chang fen or chee cheong fun in Cantonese), and steamed chive dumplings (韭菜饺 jiu cai jiao or gau choy gow in Cantonese)!!
Anonymously ask me three things you want to know about me!

Horizon Zero Dawn Review
Tumblr media
The game that critics have been raving about for years and I just haven't played. I heard a lot of people say "this needs a movie" but they say that about any game that dares to be a little bit cinematic because I personally disagree.
That first part is rough, the story seems so in your face, predictable and bland but I think the problem is that it didn't know how to put in its exposition. I think it naturally builds up as it goes on, getting bigger and broader, it's just those first experiences that can be a slog because you're pretty much learning what style you're going to play in.
I got more or less everything I expected, crafting, a skill tree, various weapons. What I didn't expect though are dialogue options. You can choose normally up to four paths, an intelligent one, a compassionate one, and a straightforward one. You don't have to worry about the stress of trying to reach a specific ending because there's really only one, the only thing that affects it is the amount of people that are in it. So does that make the choices irrelevant? Yes and no because there are different dialogue options and like I said, which means that you can get certain characters to like you more given the option you choose but not in the same way that relationship points work and I definitely felt the draw to do that whenever I came across my first side-quest.
Tumblr media
Side-quests are interesting, I love tracking things in games, though it's rare that you actually get the chance to do it and here you have a good amount of opportunities. Is that all though? Far from it. I actually found myself searching for side-quests because the first two were so satisfying. It really only began to show its hand a bit more after those quests. As I mentioned, there are a lot more RPG elements than I first imagined but it starts to send you on scavenger hunts, especially that Dreamwillow one, that one I actually laughed out loud at every time I was turned away. It also starts to gatekeep to where it recommends that you be a certain level which is...odd? I mean at face value it looks like you could rock basically any combat situation that isn't context sensitive. Leveling up gives you abilities but they're more like Deus Ex on that front, where it's just for preference and upgrading, not necessarily strength. The only thing you improve on offense wise basically boils down to having the right materials or units to buy weapons then a matter of finding modifications. Other than that, leveling up seems to just increase your health. It really just depends on the quest too because I'll play one above my level and be fine then play another that's actually under my level and feel stuck.
Now I only played it on normal mode so something like "Ultra Hard" is bound to be more demanding but as far as actual side quest content, I feel like they have potential but just need tweaked, give me more stuff for major characters that affects their standing with me. Rather than having each quest be contained in its own story, have it affect you later in the game, let your actions be shown, give it rewards and consequences. There are some really great side-quests but there are also some crappy ones, it doesn't pass that threshold that most RPGs fall under or anything. However, I did find myself doing side-quests at my own free will and the ones that I didn't like or couldn't do at the time, I just skipped and focused on something else, I felt a lot more freedom with this game, like I didn't feel forced to grind or do a certain number of side-quests or really do anything. It encourages you to explore and play the way you want to play and I respect the heck out of that. Maybe it's different for other players though.
Perhaps my favorite actual side thing was the Cauldrons for those who actually played this, you'll know why. For those who didn't, just know that it's cool and let it be a surprise for when you go to one. You might expect these big set-pieces and bosses like Uncharted or GoW, but it's not really like that. I genuinely think that this is more video-gamey than it lets on which certainly takes up its runtime. One addition to side-quests that I would like to see is one where you don't know it's happening. For example, in this game, you'll come across random hunters who are attacking or being attacked by machines but rather than just going on about your day and them going on about their's, I want to fight off the machine and the person say "You saved my life, my name's Jara, I live in the town nearby and want to repay you." so you go there and there's trouble so it starts up a side-quest. Now don't get me wrong, there are PLENTY of instances of people getting attacked actually being a mission but most of the time someone in town will just tell you "I haven't seen this person in a while, can you go check on them for me?" It's the art of subtlety and also just doing a good deed and getting rewarded for it. It's a conscious choice and split decision rather than just another checkmark on your list to complete.
Tumblr media
Now I won't bother listing the characters and rating them but there's a certain aspect that has me really enthused So, Aloy is an outcast and a lot of these side missions and scenarios reflect her, you'll see the way she can relate with other characters, making it almost poetic in a subliminal kind of way. Then they add this tribal and futuristic setting to it where Aloy acts as the medium, there are parts of the game where she questions the tribe because they cut themselves off from technology and just don't know any better and we as a viewer know that but having the main character view things in 'our' lens is pretty genius. To top that off, they give her enough personality to be her own character while giving us enough power to influence her so that we ourselves can REFLECT WITH HER. It's not her character that I'm impressed with, it's the layout of the story.
So, how is the main story? It's kind of like the Flood scenario in Halo if I'm being honest. I'm not going to spoil anything but it's passable, like I said, it's not like an Uncharted and it's not like a movie. The visuals just look good at times (I took all the pictures in this review myself and so much more!). I'd call it a futuristic/tribal mix between Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Skyrim but I see elements of a lot of things. (Also since it's post apoctalypic, you find items that we see in modern day, like how they call keys, "chimes"! They think they're windchimes because there are no more cars! I love that!)
It actually does a pretty good job at being an open world considering that there are tons of things to do on your routes as well as collect but it's not so much so that it seems unfeasible, as I said, I found myself doing a good chunk of the side stuff just because it was fun to do and I'm not even close to a completionist for any game. If you mess up, healing plants will still be there. As long as you save, enemy parts will still be there. A place can be cleared out and conquered so that enemies don't come back. The actual towns are peaceful so you can't get mangled by any bots outside of scripted instances.
The graphics are pretty good but I can see some error here and there, nothing necessarily game breaking but the animations and AI are definitely janky at times. It's pretty obvious from the get-go but I'll do my best to specify and give constructive criticism on what I found wrong with certain aspects of the game. Rost is slow, like slower than walking speed but that's not to speak for all NPCs, some run, some you don't need to follow, it was really just him. I've had NPCs who fight but miss every single time on simple enemies (that might not be a bug, that might just be a funny bit that someone decided to add in). Sabretooths have jumped through walls (granted the walls were kinda broken but I'm not sure if those big boys can fit when they can barely find the entrance) I found myself jumping to a ledge or on a rope but not land it and just drop (it really boils down to loosening the hit box for that). Which to add on to that, I would like more places to climb and jump to in general (other than stupid mountains). I felt like there wasn't really enough that I could climb and the places that I could, could've been a bit more obvious that I could, maybe even make it viewable with your focus if you don't want it to be visually outstanding. There's a day and night cycle and while I like that, I found some of the contrast to be annoying because I could be staring a ladder right in the face and not even know it sometimes because it would be so dark. I'm not going to complain too much about it because I didn't turn my brightness up, I just left it at default and I would assume the PS5 version fixes some of those little things.
Tumblr media
Now, this one is kind of a gray area: Hiking up mountains. Skyrim, Fallout, and Death Stranding went too far and gave little to no barriers. They had you looking for sweet spots that weren't there in order to cheese your way through an area either on or off a beaten path. But I would compare this to something like GTA where it's not as bad and does have its limits but might need tightened up some more because I can certainly get to places that lead to nowhere.
I've made headshots that don't make contact or damage while using precision. Part of that problem was that they could be high up in a tower (which have spikes sticking out) and I would hit ABOVE the logs, to make a headshot but since it was in that vicinity, it registered that as the spikes' hitbox so it wouldn't cause any damage and just alert the enemy (same if I was in the tower, looking down). Input lag where I hit up button on the D-Pad to regain health and I have to keep pressing it. If I had to guess, you have to meet the requirements of not taking damage, staying still, etc in order for it to actually work but it doesn't really have a reason to do that and it doesn't "tell" you that those are the requirements (as far as I know).
During the final boss, one of the enemies hit me into a rock wall, trapping me inside of it and the boss was already half health so I really didn't want to have to restart (I also didn't know how far back the checkpoint was) so I kept shooting stuff and eventually the boss destroyed the wall, allowing me to get out (timed section, by the way). There have been a few times where a tree or leaf or something is obstructing a cutscene and sometimes there will be a mech in the background screaming over the NPC talking, which I'm sure is due to the cutscenes being real-time which is still pretty impressive. Now are these errors all the time? No, not at all, I'm just pointing out that some times these things happened and that I felt it needed ironed out but I wouldn't call this half baked or an unfinished product or anything, it's nowhere near that level. I get that there are so many NPCs that it's hard to account for them all with facial animations but whenever they're talking, it seems pretty static and sometimes the lips don't line up. There's this one guy who says that he got lost in a sandstorm but he's standing in snow. Again, little nitpicks in an otherwise great game.
Now, I got this game for free as a Playstation promotion but that doesn't necessarily mean it'll be great, I played a little bit of that Ratchet & Clank reboot that was offered and I wasn't impressed, I quit after the first few worlds and was glad I didn't buy it at launch, (despite being a classic PS2 R&C fan) but we're not here to review that. I also played Abzu and loved it but it was short so it was definitely worth a play but maybe not 60$ (I actually think it's 20$ at this point though). With this game, it's the whole complete edition with DLC and everything, it has the length, so it really just boils down to "Would I have spent money on it otherwise?"
I think I would've if I knew more about it because I think it just got better and better after that first part of the game. It's marketed a bit differently than what I ended up getting but I found myself pouring hours into this game and loving it for one reason or another. I actually bought Shadow of the Colossus along with it (which is considered a cult classic) but I liked Horizon so much better, definitely worth its full price in my opinion. (So your promotion worked on me Sony, congrats) It has its problems but the potential is there and I feel like a sequel would probably iron out a lot of my troubles with it, so it's definitely a franchise worth investing into.
If you're interested in what I thought of the DLC alone (if you didn't get the Ultimate edition and are wondering if the extra content is worth it) I have a separate post that goes into that here.

Ok now I accept the fact that Fem!Eivor is a blatant reskin of Kassandra, I can move on to combat and yes, I agree with both of you.
In short: I absolutely hate the combat system in Origins and Valhalla is basically bringing it back (expand below to read more).
The gameplay is actually a carbon copy of Origins (not Odyssey. People shit on Odyssey but the combat system shown in the leak is actually Origin’s), even the bow mechanics are from Origins. This makes sense from a development standpoint because Valhalla is being developed in parallel with Odyssey and Montreal brings back the shield in Valhalla, so it’s expected that the Montreal team will use what they already have an improve upon it, which is the combat system from Origins.
The leak is most likely an alpha footage so I hope they fine tune the combat in the next few months. We still need to see what the official gameplay looks like that’s not a CGI trailer lol. I finish Origins (base game + 2 DLCs) recently after playing Odyssey and I absolutely hate the combat system. It is so bad that I actually prefer the combat in Death Stranding. Look, Ninja Theory had only 20 people on their team and 3 years but the combat system in Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice looks better and more satisfying. I see that they try to give us that dual axes throw but after experiencing the Leviathan axe throw from GOW, I can’t settle for this knockoff. It’s like me trying to eat Hershey’s after having a taste of Venchi’s Chocolate. It seems that they want to drag out these war battles and honestly, the things they show in the leak will be my most favorite activity to SKIP. If I play Valhalla, it will probably for sightseeing purposes and waiting to see how they portray the Norse goddesses.
Despite Odyssey being criticized as being the least AC game in the franchise (to be fair Odyssey is set before the Hidden Ones were established, so it’s fair imo that there’s no hidden blade element, but that’s for another discussion), and yet, Odyssey is the most financially successful one in the entire franchise, with “[v]ery sharp increases over past the twelve months in sell-through, daily player engagement and PRI, up by approximately 90%, 90%, and 170% respectively compared with [AC Origins].” The PRI (Player Recurring Investment) is important here because it means “sales of digital items, DLC, season passes, subscriptions and advertising”. Odyssey does 170% better than Origins in this aspect, why is that? PRI doesn’t mean the base copy of the game. We all know that it is more likely for players to spend extra money on their characters if they are attached their avatar/virtual companion. I think that Ubi gives us female characters because it means players will spend more money on micro-transactions. Also, having two options increases the likelihood of players replaying the game and perhaps spend more money. We all know 2/3 of players choose Alexios, I honestly don’t think it is Ubi’s kind change of heart that they give us a female protag because they’re “woke”. For the time crunch that they put their devs on to crank a AAA game worth of content annually totally justifies them not giving us a female protag and they have the “numbers” to back it up. It’s either they are hiding something else about their player choice data OR it’s because they see capitalization opportunities by having a female character. The later seems more likely based on how slimmed down Fem!Eivor is to their male players’ taste.
Maybe I should be grateful that we even have Fem!Eivor to begin with. It’s a “brotherhood” after all. Hopefully there will be a mod that does Fem!Eivor justice by the time I touch this game. If not, I guess I’ll just put bulky armor on her and pretend that she has actual beef underneath and not a failed Isu experimental clone.

Terry’s Favorite Playstation Games
I hate Sony. I have not made this secret, from much of my art to a good helping of Youtube comments reacting to blind praise, most who know me more than the usual internet passerby are acquainted enough with my hatred of the company and brand.
And it is not a biased band wagon kind of hate either, no this took time to fester into a most blackened bloom. Interactions with the biased rank and file, learning of the less than favorable business practices Sony has employed, the constant in your face propaganda from even third party publishers made against its two direct competitors, but most of all and most important my own experience with their premiere game system. No joke, the PS3 was effectively the worst console I have ever had the “pleasure” of owning, both with the initial 600 dollar 40 gig grill and the used slightly slimmer replacement I had to get just to keep my own sanity. I blacklisted the PS4 for a reason and even now I look at what the fourth generation of the console has to offer and feel assured my choice was correct.
Again my hatred of Sony is not pure bias fanboy raging, it is the culmination of less than favorable experiences and acquired knowledge that has forever soured my perceptions of the brand. And to further stress this point? I’ll go ahead and give you the Playstation Exclusives I absolutely loved in no particular order. Heavy emphasis on “exclusive”, all the titles listed will be ones you absolutely need a Sony console to play, no multi-platform titles, no games that were once exclusive then ported to other systems. Sony only.
And don’t expect Shadow of the Colossus on this list, of all the excellent titles one can point to that is the lowest of hanging fruit. Everyone loves that one, everyone, even its critics and detractors. My reasons for liking it are the same as everyone else’s...
____________________________________
Tumblr media
INFAMOUS & INFAMOUS 2; Honestly I couldn’t decide which I liked more since both offer the same consistently excellent design and experience, I guess the second one for being more polished and having more interesting settings but trading one over the other is heresy. And honestly if I didn’t hate Sony so much I’d be all over the third one (though after seeing the story on Youtube I gotta say, Fetch is a complete unlikable asshole).
Ultimately this is a 3D platformer, one that more than belongs in the same breath as the likes of Super Mario Anything and Banjo Kazooie. Despite its otherwise “serious, realistic and edgy” tone and design this is the kind of delightful platforming romp that’ll satisfy even old school players pinning for the bygone era of platformers being the dominant genre in gaming. And it just makes the circumstances of its creation more fascinating. How Sucker Punch followed suit with Naughty Dog going from cartoony mascot games to so-called serious realistic games, yet unlike Naughty Dog puts out a product that still feels like a spiritual successor to their previous work.
Naturally the biggest negative is the morality system. Bad enough it is so arbitrary and safety helmet in its design that it tells you which choices are good and evil but said choices are so cartoonishly extreme on both spectrum that any sense of ambiguity and nuance are lost. But on the flip side, it does present one of the most fun bits of obsessive compulsive gameplay features I’ve ever experienced....
Tumblr media
The Pulse Heal. Damn was this so much fun. The sheer rush of not only going to help someone but actually having the capacity to do so, the kind of humanity enriching wish fulfillment I didn’t get enough of. And I wasn’t just blowing smoke when I described it as a “obsessive compulsive” gameplay feature, I lost count of the number of times I slammed the breaks on what I was doing every time I saw some helpless citizen in desperate need of a jolt. It was nuts man, a game that lets you play as a superhero and actually let you feel like one....one helpless citizen at a time.... ______________________________________
Tumblr media
GOD OF WAR III; But then there’s this fucking game that makes me feel like a complete villain, go figure. Then again that has been the real beauty of this franchise especially after the first game, there are no real heroes, no real champions of justice. There are only villains. What separates Kratos from all the other villains is that he was ultimately the culmination of their selfish and petty machinations to satisfy their own ends, he is the necessary evil meant to liberate the world from the cruelty of Olympus.....unfortunately, it entailed nearly destroying the world and sending it into a state of anarchy thereby making things worse. Oops.
Well either way the games are still just good ol’ hack n’ slash shenanigans. Technically I should give the nod to GoW 2 for having the more satisfying journey involving the Sisters of Fate....but it ends with a complete blue balling of an ending. Pretty arrogant to have such an ending when you’re not even sure you’re getting a sequel....well it did but still....
Plus the third one lets you actually fight more than one Olympian, hell it actually lets you fight Hercules, the proverbial OG Superman himself. AND HE’S VOICED BY KEVIN SORBO. But what really cements it is the overall combat which feels more satisfying. Not only are some of the core moves fantastic (especially the grab moves) but all the available weapons are chained weapons. It’s the kind of sameness and consistency that actually works to the game’s benefit, complimenting the gameplay and Kratos’ overall design as a range based fighter. Also nice how all the button prompts are regulated to the side of the screen to correspond to the button placement, a nice touch to mitigate any disorientation of the chaos on screen. __________________________________
Tumblr media
CRASH BANDICOOT: WARPED; Yes yes I know the N’Sane Trilogy is now gonna be multi-platform (thank Primus) but as many who have played it will verify it’s such an extensive HD remake that it doesn’t quality as being the same game. And sadly I don’t see the original ported to any other system.
Not much that needs to be said here, when it comes to the original trilogy everyone has their first favorite. I might have played the first one once or twice but never haven owned the first PS (fun fact I actually wanted it over the N64 but my mom was convinced to get the later) it would be this one that I ended up playing the most and ultimately beat first during one particular visit to my out of state cousins. _______________________________________
Tumblr media
RATCHET & CLANK FUTURE: A CRACK IN TIME; I never got into R&C during my initial PS2 era days, it wasn’t until a decade or so later that I played all three of the original trilogy and the future trilogy. And I played them all in chronological order, so to go from the utter lackluster flop of a plot that was Tools of Destruction to this one was an easy step up.
I’m not gonna argue this game’s quality against the original trilogy, after much retrospect and hearing other opinions there is just no contest as far as story, setting and personality. The original trilogy wins. But as far as the future trilogy? Yeah, this is easily the best one, the other two are just boring.
Crack in Time just had the best story overall and an overall journey that didn’t feel like my time was being wasted. Plus this was one of those games that gave me incentive to actually seek out the optional side objectives. Gameplay balance is an issue as things can skew a bit too easy but I was having too much fun overall to mind. Plus any game that gives me something like the Constructo Pistol and Shotgun easily gets the nod. ___________________________________
Tumblr media
LITTLEBIGPLANET 2; There is some part of me that still loves this game....but these days it is more of a tragic love story of love lost. Ultimately my creativity and ambition overgrew my actual ability and the limitations forced on me with both the allotted level space and materials (I mean good lord have you tried to make levels with a lot of gold and complex shapes? The game just flat out tells you to fuck off). Perhaps what really soured the experience was trying to do exactly what the devs did with the story mode they made, but I realize now it was as impressive as it was because they had no arbitrary thermometer limiting what they could put in.....bastards....
These days I more respect this game for what it was made to do and what others were able to do with it. But as far as what I was able to do? Yeah, it’s too heartbreaking to think about..... __________________________________
Tumblr media
JAK II; Remember not even a few paragraphs ago I said I never played Ratchet & Clank until recently? This is why. Because in an industry where brand new games cost up to a few tens short of a full Benjamin, well, choices have to be made.
And yeah I was easily drawn to the first game with it being a more direct 3D platformer, easily the kind of game I’d get into after my time with the N64. And then the second game came along and added guns and an edgy dark hero super mode.....without compromising the gameplay the series was established on. And for as edgy as it was now being with the story it never felt ridiculous or out of place, one of the few times I’ve even see it work out really.
Also it was a laugh riot to play what was extensively Crash Bandicoot meets Grand Theft Auto. __________________________________
Tumblr media
KINGDOM HEARTS; I have already chronicled my thoughts on this franchise several times before so I won’t bore you with too many details. Bottom line I feel the first one is the only good one simply because it had a nice fun story that felt like both a parody and love letter to Japanese RPGs without a hint of Kojima grade arrogance or self indulgence, unlike later entries >:/
And not once did this ever feel like a mere commercial for the Disney films represented, each world was an adventure all its own and the interactions with your favorite Disney characters actually felt like characters interacting, instead of just actors in a studio voicing their lines. So ultimately I’m able to tolerate the rather archaic gameplay because the story is still a treat to enjoy.
But more relevant to this list, this was the game that got me to get a PS2 in the first place. I was rather content going only with Nintendo but then I played this game while at another cousin’s house and was immediately entranced. And really it was at this point I was kinda tired of missing out on third party games that were PS exclusive for reasons that sounded as arbitrary excuses back then as they do now.
I still can’t fathom how many games of the PS2′s third party library wouldn’t have worked just as fine on the Gamecube, thereby increasing the available consumer base and resulting in more sales. And if KH3 really is slated for release on Xbox One, why the hell are none of the HD compilations of past games also released on the console as a courtesy to those who might be interested in the series but don’t have reason to get a PS4? Sadly it’s a question I shouldn’t be asking because I know exactly what kind of answer I’ll be getting, excuses. ________________________________
So yeah, even though I have indeed enjoyed some of the titles available, not even these select games are not enough to sway my disdain for Sony. In fact the games listed that were developed and publish by Sony themselves only serve as a reminder of what the company is now all too willing to throw away in light of the current direction it is going for with its exclusives library.
And really it kind of makes sense that Sony just doesn’t give much of a shit these days, they were never a video game company to begin with, they are an electronics conglomerate. Movies, music, computers, headphones, that sort of jazz. Video games is just another department to satisfy their fiscal year quota, nothing more. People keep praising them for revolutionizing gaming but forget that they never needed to get into video games to begin with.....
Their only incentive to doing so was as a petty, vindictive, butt hurt reaction to Nintendo’s refusal to bend over the same way Michael Jackson did. Sony hates taking no for an answer so they acted like a jealous ex lover and produced a product based on a foundation of hate...and hatred only begets more hatred.... _________________________________
Also figured I give a few honorable mentions that can’t be on this list proper for one or two obvious reasons, but all of them I have experienced on Sony consoles...
CASTLEVANIA SYMPHONY OF THE NIGHT; Truth be told I’m more partial to Harmony of Dissonance but I know someone will get on my ass for not bringing this up. But yeah this was also on the Saturn....in Japan. Who’s dumb idea was it to keep the majority of the Saturn’s library Japanese exclusive?
MEGA MAN X6 (But Only On Easy Mode); On anything higher this game is just as broken and near unplayable as people say it is, shit even on easy it’s still a mess. Anyway this was the only PS MMX game I actually played on the PSOne back when it was new, this time on a friend’s console. And I’m not gonna lie I still have kind of a soft spot for it even with the glaring flaws....
KINGDOM HEARTS II; Yes yes this is a far superior game to the first one, gameplay wise. But in a game genre that lives or dies on the story being told there is no question that this was a serious downgrade. Everything that endeared me to the first game’s story this sequel proceeds to fuck up royally, and thus seeing the skip cutscene option as an absolute godsend makes me die a little inside, first rule of good storytelling in games is to make sure no one will ever want to skip the cutscenes even if they have the option to.
DEVIL MAY CRY 3; It was of course the first DMC I ever played and beat, and when said first happens to be the best in gameplay, structure and story it’s pretty hard not to be biased.
TRANSFORMERS WAR/FALL OF CYBERTRON; I think you guys know by now that I am a big fan of Transformers, so my reasons for liking these games are a no brainer.
BAYONETTA; Yeah it’s weird thinking this game ever saw the light of day on the PS3 and 360, mostly because Platinum had the decent courtesy to port the first game to the Wii U in direct response to concerns about the sequel now being Nintendo exclusive. And what did they do when it was announced a third game was on the way? They ported the previous two titles to the Switch so that no one would be left out of the loop, not even those that passed on the Wii U. That’s what I call customer service, wouldn’t you agree SQUARE ENIX?
DEAD SPACE; Pretty much the last good EA game. The final gasp of air made by EA’s capacity for common human decency before tossing it away and effectively going all in on putting out a constant flow of bullshit on a yearly basis.
ASURA’S WRATH; Pretty much the only interactive movie game in all creation that still feels like a video game, with actual video game segments. Still bullshit that you had to pay additional money just to see the ending but hey at least said ending was actually worth the money, heaven help Capcom if it ended up being a shit ending...
BATMAN ARKHAM ASYLUM; Yeah yeah I should be giving the nod to Arkham City but that whole business involving Talia Al Ghul all but killed the second game’s story for me....seriously Bruce what the fuck do you even see in that cunt to make you so sycophantic for her?
DRAGONBALL XENOVERSE; Well it was fun while it lasted and even now I feel it’s a better “Kingdom Hearts” than any of the latter actual KH titles. But aside from also being on the 360 and such, well, it’s not exactly something I’m willing to play again.
GOD OF WAR: GHOST OF SPARTA; One of two reasons I even bothered picking up the PSP, and while I have since fallen out of love with Birth by Sleep, this is one I’m still able to go back to. Not only is it a decent adventure in its own right but somehow it makes God of War II better from a story perspective as now it gave Kratos even more reason for going against Olympus...

Let’s talk about GoW
God of War not Gears of War you dingus.
- Painstakingly handcrafted
I’m sure you’ve heard a lot about this game right now but I hope alongside its graphical fidelity, satisfying gameplay, and story; that the level of detail in this game is being discussed. It's the foundation of the things I just mentioned. Every creative decision made by Santa Monica is backed up by the details of the said decision. A familiar free-flowing combat style that lets the player play not only as they want, but as they may need to. Why is combat different? Kratos is older, slower, but still strong.  The sense of scale is signature God of War but brought into this generation, a more modern cinematic feel that really compliments the combat. A closer camera really lets you bask in the surrounding environment and how they change around you. The way lore and myths are imparted through both dialogue and one of the Atreus collectibles, it’s there if you want it and deepens the world; my point is that it's seamlessly interwoven into the world and not just filler talk or pointless collectibles. This game is polished to the point of a blinding sheen.
-”Can I borrow this?”
This franchise has learned a lot as it watched from the shadows, waiting for its return. Watching Joel and Ellie in the way they communicated and interacted. Observing the warriors of the Dark Souls world. Learning the new wheel of third-person melee combat in “light, heavy, block, dodge” and used this simple genius in their own inspiring way. Yakuza’s open but intimate world space well-sprinkled with meaningful items and encounters. I’m sure other gamers see other games that I haven’t mentioned but those are the big titles that I see when I play this game. Regardless of what influence/inspiration you see, to me, it never bites so much to be deemed lazy. Everything is tweaked and reworked to the benefit of this new God of War.
- Myths Masacered
The combat, like many aspects of the game, is one of the crown jewels. Fluid, visceral, challenging, but forgiving. Movement is labored with Kratos’ age but its still plenty of dodging. Everything from the ax throw, the actual melee combat, and hand-to-hand; it’s all flawlessly interwoven and makes for some of the most exhilarating combat I’ve experienced as a gamer. Personally, it dwarfs the previous GoW games and overhauls the fights to something truly greater. To me, it seems Soulsian, yes a lot of people say that about a lot of games coming out but guess what. It’s one of the most loved and famed series in modern gaming and with development starting the year DS2 came out, it is conceivable to see them taking some inspiration. Which is fine because GoW broadens the horizon of “light, heavy, dodge” and opens up the floodgates for a much more expansive fight style that the player gets to dictate in an instance. The immeasurably brilliant Jim Sterling draws a comparison to Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice and I see it but given its 2017 release date I doubt it was the muse for this change despite seeing his point of view.
- rpG’d up
Another huge part of this virtual facelift is the mechanics involved in progression. Armor, enhancement runes, interchangeable moves that keep the combat fresh. The dual leveling system is interesting and vaguely reminiscent of Destiny/The Division. All while maintaining a very Dungeons and Dragons-esque progression that makes you feel that jump from level 3 to level 4. So many aspects that, had someone told me SMS would use them, I would’ve hesitated to feel good about such choices. It drives exploration because you’re looking for a new resource to upgrade your favorite armor piece or xp for moves.
-Kratos: Live and Reloaded
This is Kratos unlike any iteration we’ve seen. In dialogue and cutscenes you expect him to lash out, and to some extent, he may. It is worth noting however that it is his learnedness and maturity that is arguably most jarring to me. Showing patience, wisdom, and intelligence beyond” how many ways can I kill this thing”. Mature isn’t just the rating, it’s a description of our guy Kratos that doesn’t apply in previous games, not like this.
-Like our main character, not perfect
It's something impressive when I feel like I’m nitpicking in my criticisms. I do think it’s a bit heavy on the boat time. Even so, the boating is used for exposition and dialogue between characters. However rare that it is, I’ve experienced freezes in really inopportune times. Like, mid-Execution Cleaver kind of times.  Bugs like the speech audio being really muted in HDR mode. Even in the face of these issues, there have been three updates to GoW since its release on the 20th. They are making sure this product is running at it’s highest capacity and when we live in an age where developers ship a game and can wait months before major updates; it’s kind of refreshing but still a detriment.

Zul’s Top 9 Games of 2018
Tumblr media
By Zul Edwards
Heyyy it’s me. I’m back! What a year! 2018 has come and gone and many awesome games have been played by everyone here at PAR. The votes were tallied, the results are in, and I am included in that bunch. However, some of the games I played and loved this year were no-shows on our list. Some AMAZING games that I think deserve a little love on our corner on the internet.  So, I thought, if you out there reading this were interested, (spoiler alert, nobody is) here is my OWN personal top nine games of 2018.
So, let’s get this thing started with my number 9!... oh yeah, I only played 9 games in 2018. heh.
9) No Man’s Sky – So I was one of those gamers who was excited for NMS when it was first announced a few years back. Thought the idea of exploring a quintillion planet was awesome. Then the game came out, I heard it sucked, and I ignored it. Enter a couple years later when it was on sale, had a ton of updates and new features: true online with friends, customizable characters, base building, and a brand-new story. However, it wasn’t enough to keep me hooked. Don’t get me wrong, I liked exploring the various galaxies and doing various side quests, engaging in dogfights with pirates and mining for space gold, but overall it just still felt so empty, so repetitious, and so… blah. I guess I still prefer quality over quantity, even if the quantity is in the quintillions.
8) The Alliance Alive – The first on the list of “Games only Zul played this year”. The Alliance Alive is a 3DS game from the creators of the classic “Legend of Legacy”, literally a game I borrowed from Justin, played for all of 30 minutes, then promptly returned to Justin never to be spoken of again. So, to my surprise when he told me the same studio was making another game, The Alliance Alive, but it was helmed by one of the writers of the Suikoden franchise, I was cautiously optimistic. Much to my (pleasant) surprise, the game was good! A blend of classic JRPG turned based battles with flairs of modernization: skills learned through fighting, increased stats based on the location of fighters in battles, and a darker story not usually found in those classic SNES/PS1 RPGs this seems to emulate.  While the main characters fall into some pretty cliché tropes, the side characters really shine. From giant axe-wielding lizard men that remind me of my own D&D character, to a demon-dog-man butler, to a mad child genius scientist who rides a duck robot, this game has a lot of flavor. I really should go back and finish.
7) Chasm – While it’s no secret that I love Castlevania games, I think it’s fair to say I’m not really a giant fan of Metroidvania games. I prefer the simpler side-scrolling action of Castlevania, constantly moving forward towards a goal of smacking Drac in the face with a metal whip, to the backtracking and map completing chore of most Metroidvania games. With that said, something about the less intense and simpler format of Chasm kept me hooked till the end. I didn’t mind backtracking and completing the map in Chasm because it wasn’t as vast or complicated as other games in the genre. It was colorful, had great music, stellar pixel art and a fun yet challenging battle system and platforming. Overall it was a blast to play, but it just got overshadowed in a year filled with superior games.
6) God of War – “WHAT THE FUCK?” I hear you slam on your keyboards as I place the unrivaled GOTY in a paltry 6th place. Don’t get me wrong, this game is good. In fact, it’s VERY good. However, for whatever reason, I guess this game didn’t hook me like it did for everyone else. I only have a passing familiarity with the GoW series. Even though I’m a diehard SonyBoy, I only ever played GoW 1 and never beat it. Kratos and Atreus are some of the best written and best-acted characters to come out of a video game in this year or any year. Hell, if we had a “best new character” category again this year, I would struggle to not put Atreus in the top 3. The music is amazing, the writing is fantastic, the scope, cinematography and the constant one camera perspective were all stellar achievements in the medium of gaming, not to mention I’m pretty much obsessed with all things Norse… BUT. I dunno. Little things kept taking me out of it. Atreus’s sudden, jarring mood swings. The poor pacing in certain parts. The sudden introduction of major characters and/or story elements, that felt kind of brushed over and/or rushed. The lackluster side content, the padding and the empty worlds. The game is good. But it never felt great to me. Most games that I love, I think about when I’m not playing them, then I rush home from work to play them because I want to complete them, either for the story or because the gameplay is addicting, but this game felt more like a chore sometimes. I didn’t even buy it, I just borrowed it from Butch earlier in the year when it came out. I’m sorry Cory. I tried but I just didn’t love this game.
5) Moonlighter – Now here’s a game I absolutely adored. Flew under my radar and was recommended by Nick. By day you’re a humble shopkeeper, selling various wares and curios. By night, (by… MOONLIGHT) you explore dungeons ala Link to the Past style in a top-down view, into randomly generated maps. Each area has different items to collect & new materials to find, which you bring back to the shop to sell, which with the money you earn, can craft new weapons, which will get you further into dungeons, which will mean you find more items to sell which means you make more gold to spend on armor and weapons, which means you can get better materials to keep delving deeper, WHICH MEANS… ahem. Ah yes. That classic feedback loop. It sucked me in. It’s simple but effective in keeping me engaged. Coupled with a great art style, fluid beautiful pixel graphics and a surprisingly good amount of story for this type of game, Moonlighter took a nice chunk of my time early in the year.
4) Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom – Another entry in “Games only Zul played this year”, NNK2 was a surprise hit for me. I never played NNK1 and heard rather negative things about it from Nick over the years. I bought NNK2 on a whim months after it came out because it was on sale and I was craving a good JRPG, and it did not disappoint. I loved pretty much everything about this game. The music, the story, the beautiful not quite Ghibli, but practically Ghibli art style, the characters, the mechanics, the town building, the combat… it was everything I was looking for. There were certainly parts in the middle that lagged a bit, and the general “go to town > solve town’s problem > make an alliance with the town” could be considered cliché or predictable, but every town felt unique and its inhabitants all felt genuine. Recruiting citizens into your kingdom and assigning them all a role in your castle was a time sink I didn’t realize I would be so into, but I think I spent more hours on that than anything else in the game. And it also gets marks for being the other child in a video game besides Atreus, King Evan, that I didn’t want to strangle, and in fact by the time the credits rolled, he’d probably be #2 or 3 in Best Character of the Year for me.
3) Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Now as far as JRPGS go, Dragon Quest is the ultimate grand-daddy, even more so than Final Fantasy, but it was a series I never really got into. I played some previous games in the series and found passing enjoyment in a couple titles but never enough to ever want to complete a game or seek out other entries in the series. That all kind of changed when I played DQ 11. DQ has never really strayed too far from its classic turn-based JRPG roots. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” would be their mantra I assume, and I love it. In a time when the turn-based system is all but gone from genre giant Final Fantasy, DQ has instead chosen to stick with it, and fully master the dying style. It was hands down the best JRPG I’ve played all year, and probably one of the best I’ve played in several years. It has everything: a great story, compelling characters, awesome music, amazing art style, engaging combat, fun side quests, a challenging yet fair difficulty curve, and it’s actually, really funny on top of all that. While the length might scare people away, (I clocked in right around 120 hours after getting the platinum trophy for 100% completion of the game) it’s some of the best time I spent gaming in a long time. It’s a classic in a modern era. It’s weird, if you said to teenage Zul “one of your favorite JRPGs ever will be Dragon Quest 11, and one of your least favorite JRPGs will be Final Fantasy 15”, he would never have believed you… but here we are.
2) Monster Hunter World – Ah yes. The one oddball in my gaming repertoire. I think we all have one of these, right? That one game/series that for whatever reason, sits outside your normal gaming habits, yet you love it, nonetheless. Maybe you love Halo and FPS games, but you also really like Animal Crossing for some reason. Or maybe you’re a diehard Dark Souls series fan but just can’t get enough of Cooking Mama as well. Variety is the spice of life they say, and while I’m primarily a “character & story first, RPGs, video games are art” kind of dude, something about smashing Monsters in the face with a giant hammer has kept me hooked on the Monster Hunter series for nearly 10 years. I love the challenging but fair battles, the deep customization, the various weapons and armors for both male and female hunters, the varied and unique monsters that all have their own ecology, musical themes, and battle styles you must learn and adapt to if you want to survive. It’s also linking up with friends (or even strangers online) and tackling a beast as a team. For all these reasons and so much more, this series sunk its claws in me from the very first time I played it, and it hasn’t let go. Monster Hunter World is the next-gen, beautifully realized game I’ve wanted for years; and it took the story, art, gameplay, and fun I’ve come to expect from this series to another level.
1) Red Dead Redemption II – I honestly don’t know how to write about this game. I can say all the other things I’ve said up until now about how great the music is (it’s amazing), how varied and alive the characters feel (they’re amazing), how stunningly awe-inspiring the scenery is or how fluid and lifelike the character animations are (they’re amazing), how the story and personal journey of Arthur Morgan literally brought me to tears more than once (he’s #1 in Best Characters btw. And they’re amazing), how rich every side quest is, how fun the mini-games are, how great the dialogue is, or any of the other truly breath-taking aspects of the game, but I don’t think I could do them justice. Hell, I don’t even know how to put them into words myself inside my own head. To me, this is one of those games that surpasses all of that. Yea, it has flaws, every game does, everyTHING does, but to me, it’s perfect, warts and all.  I can’t give it much higher praise than that, and it is absolutely the best game I played in years. When a game can give me an extensional crisis during some of its final moments, I think it’s safe to say that It’ll stick with me and has undoubtedly set a very high bar for all future games. The team at Rockstar outdid themselves and have my thanks for bringing this game into the world.
PHEW. Well, that’s it. Top 9 games of 2018 according to Zully Boy. Another great year in gaming for me personally and here’s to another great year in 2019! Lots to look forward to, and hopefully some hidden gems that’ll surprise me along the way. Happy Gaming everyone!

My Top Ten Video Games of 2018
Well, here were are again, my friends. After the non stop roller coaster thrillride of VIDEO GAMES 2017, can 2018 live up to the hype??? I’m gonna go ahead and say no right off the bat, but while every single week wasn’t filled with a new incredible genre defining experience like last year, we still had some genuine certified bangers in the mix, many of which I think will remain important to me as the years go by. It should be noted this is the first year since 2014 where a Trails game hasn’t hit the market, so for the first time ever since I started writing these lists, a Trails game will not reign victorious at the end. Scandalous! Impossible!! Shit year tbh, but we’ll get by.
Outside of games this year is maybe the best year of my entire life?? I got out of a years long slump, started an actual genuine career path, and then somehow managed to fenegle falling in love into the whole mix. These lists have always come from some greater sense of yearning to reach out and communicating how I feel about things I love to anyone who will listen, but right now all I can think of is about how happy and lucky I am for my life to have taken the turns it did this year. 2019 is gonna have to try real hard to break my stride.
If you’d like to read my previous rambly lists, here they are:
2015
2016
2017
Anyway without further ado, here’s ten games that aren’t Trails of Cold Steel 3(WHEN??):
Tumblr media
10. Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales
This one is only at the bottom of the list because I didn’t have time to finish it. I loved getting to jump into the world of the witcher again. The world is dark and gritty and the choice are morally grey and the writing is impeccable and gwent is even more fun to play as a main mechanic than it was in the Witcher 3 as a minigame. I can’t wait to dive back into this one come the new year.
Tumblr media
9. Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology
One of the most well written and executed time-travel-based JRPGs I’ve ever played. It’s a story about trying to fix mistakes, about different perspectives trying to understand each other instead of fighting over differences.
It’s got an overall theme of realizing how important you can be to the world around you despite seeming insignificant that really resonated with me, an amazing cast of characters and it also just happens?? To be really fun to play??
Tumblr media
8. The House in Fata Morgana: A Requiem for Innocence
That I didn’t play the first game the year it came out is a damn crime, this series of gothic tragedies has such special, meaningful and important themes of redemption and sacrifice and finding the people who will survive the world with you no matter what. It tackles mental illness, lgbt topics with an immense amount of respect and tells some of the most heart wrenchingly real and gutting stories, but it all culminates in the most viscerally satisfying way.
This sequel delves into one of the most unspoken parts of the original while also offering promising and hopeful glimpses into the future. It’s absolutely a must play if you in anyway liked the original.
Tumblr media
7. Wandersong
Now here’s one that came absolutely out of nowhere. This game just oozes joy out of every pore. You play as a dandy bard who can only interact with the world via music trying to save it from being destroyed. Heavy themes of pacifism and the internal struggle of doing your best when you know for a fact your best won’t be good enough cover this thing like sprinkles on the most delicious and colorful donut.
Another thing I love is how every single chapter of this game plays differently, one will be a pirate adventure where you steer a ship with pirate shanties, the other will be a Majora's Mask still town sim, it goes on like this, and it never once gets boring. This game will make you smile the biggest smile from start to finish.
Tumblr media
6. God of War
Remember Kratos?? He’s back, in open world action-RPG form. I sort of grew up with the original GoW trilogy and am of the opinion that they aged about as well as I did(which is fuckin not gracefully, teenager me was a fuckin mess). God of War is out of its edgy teenager phase now, and just barely squeaking out of its holier than thou college student phase into a game that actually has a few things to say, fun characters, an amazing world, and a paternal relationship that is kind of actually a joy to watch unfold despite everyone making fun of the game for it.
This game is like twice, maybe three times as long as the original trilogy which hilariously kind of makes those games feel like a prologue to this one. I suppose the real ironic thing is they kind of are?? They were shallow angry games with nothing to say but their existence created a character that, under the right light, under THIS light, could actually be extremely compelling and fun to watch grow alongside his boy. This series went from one I was glad to see gone to one I can’t wait to get more of.
Tumblr media
5. Yakuza 6: The Song of Life/Yakuza Kiwami 2
It’s absolutely insane that Yakuza is popular now. I got into this series 10 years ago and at the time every single new yakuza release was a blessing and a curse; blessed because holy shit they actually put out a new Yakuza game and cursed because oh god it sold like shit and they probably won’t localize the next one why did they localize the zombie spin-off it almost killed the series nooooo don’t localize that give us the samurai games instead.
So anyway, this year I finally finished my journey playing through all 7 mainline Yakuza games. The journey of Kiryu Kazuma has come to an end and I have seen every step he’s taken. Yakuza 6 itself had kind of a really rough new engine that Kiwami 2 ended up refining, and from a gameplay perspective these games are basically the same, for the most part(Kiwami 2 is just better). Neither of these games come close to touching the masterful highs of Yakuza 0 but from a story perspective I think the respect and love this series has for its protagonist is unmatched, and while I was sad to see him go, I will never forget that big good crime boy and his whacky antics.
Ganbare, Kiryu-san...sayonara!!!!
Tumblr media
4. The Messenger
This game fucking rules, I really don’t know how to do it justice, I played it on a whim and fell in love with it for the time it took me to beat it in a way that I haven’t done with a game in a long time. The gameplay is fluid and fun, the writing is charming and legit hilarious at times and the soundtrack, oh baby the soundtrack, if this wasn’t a year where Celeste came out this game would win every single award for OST of the year, I would fight anyone who disagreed.
The main gimmick of this game once you reach the halfway point is being able to shift between the 8 bit past and the 16 bit future, and every time you do the music will warp to fit those aesthetics and the game does this so freaking seamlessly, it’s amazing. The final level in particular meshed the music so well with the narrative that I was like fist pumping the whole way through the final sequence of the game.
It rules extremely hard, play it. Yes, you, you reading this right now, play this game so these people will make more for me. Please?
Tumblr media
3. La-Mulana 2: The 0th Body, The 9th Spirit
Chalk this one up for game of 2018 I most can’t wait to replay and do a bunch of quick runs of. The original La Mulana is one of my favorite games of all time and this sequel delivers more of all the stuff I love while streamlining a lot of the more obscure and obtuse solutions. The music, the bosses, the world, all of the best things about the first game were all just as on point in this one.
The game evokes a sense of mystery you can only really achieve in a sequel to a game like the original La Mulana by constantly making you question the lore you already knew from the original. This all culminates in a sidequest that for a game as inscrutable as opaque as LM2, I still ended up getting really really emotionally invested in.
I don’t think there will ever be a La Mulana 3, and if that’s the case I’ll be able to leave this series happy, these two games complete each other in such a huge way, and will remain some of my favorites for years to come.
Tumblr media
2. Celeste
I swear to god, this game was my Game of the Year for 9 whole months. I have never in my life played a game with this much precision perfect game design. This is maybe the tightest most consistent feeling platformer of all time. It’s like basically perfect on a gameplay level. That it meshes it’s gameplay with it’s themes so well is what truly makes it stand out and transforms it into not only a viscerally satisfying, tough but fair game, but an emotionally resonant masterpiece that will stick with me for years to come.
Celeste is a game about climbing a mountain. Celeste is a game about overcoming depression and anxiety and learning to cope and better yourself. These things are not interchangeable, the challenges you face as a player in this game all tie in perfectly to the main character, Madeline’s struggle to just fight through her self doubt and self loathing. It’s an extremely real tale, despite how fantastical the visuals are. It’s a game about fighting and screaming and clawing at that fucking Mountain to give you a way to have your heart again, and it’s absolutely wonderful.
The game is difficult, but every personal triumph accompanies one in game, and it lets you truly feel the feelings the game is trying to evoke alongside it. This is the kind of game that only comes once or twice a decade. I’d be extremely surprised to see anything hit this level any time soon.
Tumblr media
1. Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age
This is the gold standard for all JRPGs now as far as I'm concerned. There are series that go deeper, that go harder, that go all the way in with their music but no game out there exists that is so confidently just the classic all encompassing idea of a JRPG like this one. This game is pure comfort food, it knows exactly what it is and what it is is a fun heartwarming and charming classic JRPG “chosen one gets the cool sword and fights the dark lord” tale and damn it if it hasn’t been a while since we had just a good one of those.
Haha, just kidding.
A third of the way through, this game takes a dramatic shift and flips everything on its head in a way that hasn’t been really seen or executed this well since FF6. Suddenly the comfortable is taken away, the world is scary, bleak, and the themes you missed, that were simmering in the background since the start of the game start to boil over to the surface. The world is darker but the people in it are warmer, they hold themselves together until the day comes, and the game will find ways to make you cry you would never expect from a series this traditional. These themes all culminate in a super satisfying finale that, while not entirely happy, at least leaves the world in a better place than it was before, with it’s people that much closer.
Now what if I just didn’t write any of that and told you why I really love the game.
Credits roll, and the post game, that is to say, the final third of the game, begins. What if the shift never came, how would the world be different? How would these characters acrs resolved? Who would live? Who would die instead? What does this happening mean to the world? What does this new future hold?
In one simple moment, you answer all of those questions, and Dragon Quest XI becomes a prequel to Dragon Quest III (which was a prequel to DQ1 but that’s less important).
All of a sudden this entire series has lore, everything is connected in a way it had never been for 30 years, and it fits so seamlessly and perfectly that it could only have happened in a series like Dragon Quest, which has had the same writer across all 11 games. As a fan who had played all the available english games this was such an insane rewarding moment. I struggle to really compare it to anything else outside of maybe like…
Oh shit.
OH SHIT.
Outside of goddamn Trails.
Ya’ll know what that means right?
That’s right, Trails wins game of the year once again. STILL THE KING BABYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
