He's cunning,scary intelligent,handsome. Funny. Has humble origins(could be written a bit better and less yikes by NRS but ya know) like you feel bad for shang regardless of his predicament. Because being cursed to take the life force of others for eternity because some salty bitch didn't want you to be "better" than him. Never to embrace death or fully feel life. Stuck in a limbo. Have all the powers of a god yet denied any clearance. Have all the ambitions of a emperor and ruler yet desire none of triviality of it all. Only the security and safety of it. Desire nothing more than what you feel you deserve,and that grows day by day through the trials of kombat. Day in and day out you fight for your life for crumbs.

How can anyone not feel for shang? At least nowadays.

Like they gave him something more than "evil bad guy to beat up" yet expect people to still go the status quo when they want us too. How can you root for anyone who sides with earthrealm or any of the supposed "good guys" anymore?

But anyways. Yeah shang tsung deserves better treatment than him being sexy in looks. Tho he is definitely *meow* deliciously cold Blooded.

He is sexy because he is complex. Because he's not afraid to go after what he wants. He's cautious(and more so as time goes on,as he gets a lil bit wiser tho not much changes overall. He's still a lil cheeky shit and stuck in survival mode. Oof). shang tsung is sexy because he's a bad guy with standards. Twisted sense of honor,he stands for himself. Because nobody else will.

See liu kang,in this new "timeline" if you gave him friendship or friends. Ya know genuinely a happy fucking life. And not put edanians on a pedestal because you wanted kitana puss puss so damn bad. Maybe you could have avoided all of that! Ya know maybe kung lao,raiden,and shang could have been the "deadly alliance" you needed. But noooooooo! Pusshy and looking good for these god/titans was more important?! Fuck off.

Dark raiden would have decimated you on spot for that bullshit.

And even then that will wear out in time. Even then it's not the BEST shang tsung(storywise)and Alan Lee's voice and performance is what made this enjoyable. Mr lee is too damn nice for this shit. Luv ya man but yeah. Still would love to see more of shang tsung being actually treated with respect and not with nostalgia bait clouding the writing devs minds. But people who actually love complex villains or morally grey characters.

Anyways. We love this sorcerer. But he deserves better than that.

mike is the heart of the party

he pumps them up to fight for the people they love and he comforts them when they’re looking down on themselves. he reminds them that they need to fight against a common enemy, not each other. he makes them soup when they’re sick and complains about how dumb they are while holding their hair back so they can throw up their alcohol without making a mess. he seems hardened, but his friends know he would do anything for them.

will is the soul of the party

he makes them smile, and makes sure they all feel included. he’s terrible at comforting people when they’re sad, but he’s great at keeping them from getting there by distracting them. he remembers little details, making sure to help them avoid phobias and grabbing them their coffee order without them having to ask. he doesn’t like praise, so whenever he ends up making a doodle he wants to give to them, he slips it in their bag or pocket for them to find later and smile about. will keeps them from falling apart.

max is the brain of the party.

she may not be as good in a supernatural crisis as mike is, but she can talk her way out of trouble and she often does so for the boys so they don’t end up getting punched. she’s not as big a fan of touch as the others, but she loves doing acts of service. if she’s invited to one of their houses and they leave her alone for a bit, she’ll start doing the dishes and putting things away. she’s afraid to take up space, but she’s more afraid of being unnoticed, so she makes herself extra loud and obnoxious, but she never talks over her friends, no matter what.

lucas is the voice of the party.

he says all the things no one else wants to, even though usually they’re all thinking it. he makes sure miscommunications don’t happen when they can be avoided, and any time they do happen he makes them sit down and discuss the issue so it doesn’t happen again. he’s the secret keeper of the party. everyone trusts him not to spill their secrets, and that trust is hard earned. he won’t push them on their secrets, but he makes sure they know he is aware and gently reminds him that he cares (a squeeze of a shoulder as he walks past, a soft smile when a similar topic comes up). lucas helps them breathe.

dustin is the energy of the party. he gets them excited about little things like movies and music, even after traumatic events. after 1983, they all flock to him like moths to light, reaching for just a bit of the happiness that he exudes. he shares it always. he makes them laugh when they all want to cry, and he carefully paints over the bad memories with good ones. but whenever it’s too much, he’ll sit beside them and hum or sing softly, as a way to remind them that he’s there without being pushy. dustin reminds them to be kids.

el is the hope of the party. she’s been through an unbelievable amount of suffering, and yet she radiates comfort. she is a constant reminder that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel, and she uses her actions to prove that as well. she is the most likely to initiate physical touch of all of them, and she does so often, plopping down on max and lucas’s laps, running her fingers through mike’s hair, hooking her feet around dustin’s, holding hands with will. she anchors them to the moment, making sure they’re all accounted for. when anyone needs to cry, they go to el. she’ll cry with them and they wrap them up in one of the best hugs of their life, never caring how the outside world may see it. her only care is the people she loves.

In high school I had to read “Ragtime” by E.L. Doctorow (and then write a comparison paper with another American novel—that I got an ‘A’ for somehow managing to find something to compare and contrast between this contemporary-style historial fiction book and the gothic ghost story “Turn of the Screw” should tell you that back in high school I was really good at writing a lot of BS).

The book itself was pretty good—really interesting, a mix of real historical figures and some archetypes (literally called ‘Mother,’ ‘Little Boy,’ etc) about the turn of the century, and racism, unions, immigration, women’s sufferage, and peaceful versus violent protests.

It also has…some really questionable moments (I’m looking you, Younger Brother, with your “ticket tape parade” ejeaculation while watching anarchist Emma Goldman give disgraced socialite Evelyn Nesbitt a sensual massage—that’s an image I’m never getting out of my brain, and now you all can share it with me).

There is a “Ragtime” movie, with the only good thing being Mandy Patinkin playing Tata. The movie really leaned into the sensational, silly parts of the book (there is a scene where Evelyn is topless for no reason other than they wanted an ‘R’ rating, I’m guessing?). They left out so many of the more interesting plolines, like Mother becoming independent.

And then they made a musical, and this was perfection. They took all the good parts of the novel, cut out the stupid bits that really didn’t add anything, changed a few things to keep the story going, and told essentially told the same story with amazing music, only better. They kept the focus on the theme “change is hard and can be scary,” without looking for sensationalizing moments. I really think theaters all over the US should have been playing it in 2016 because it is just so timely, and really hits on so many contemporary topics.

So, what does this have to do with the reason for this Tumblr account, The Wheel of Time? Book fans, I think, are generally in agreement that while the books are awesome, they can be problematic at times (so much spanking, a lot of male-gazy romance plotlines, domestic violence and male rape treated largely with humor, among some of the big things).

The show has a chance to change some of this (and they have already, by addressing the excessive puritanical virginity of many of the main characters [I can’t buy that Min was a virigin!], not having Nynaeve hit everyone with a stick, no one has even mentioned the word ‘breast’ so far, and so on), and update some of the problematic bits to make the story better (I have high hopes for Perrin/Faile to be less dysfunctional). Queer representation is much more explicit, and actors of color are killing it in roles that were viewed by white readers as white.

There are things I miss—Lan training the boys in weapon fighting, the Perrin/Egwene rescue from the Whitecloaks, Mat going to Fal Dara, the name a few. Some of those missing things are important, and I’m hoping later seasons will do them justice. But I think the key thing is to realize it could have been just awful, like the “Ragtime” movie. Anyone ever see “When the Dark Comes Rising”? That was such a disappointing adaptation. Or the recent “A Wrinkle in Time”? Ugh. I love the Harry Potter movies, but there are so many changes from the books, in some places feeling like a really different story.

Instead, we have amazing costumes, detailed sets, great actors, and so many delightful Easter eggs for the book fans that are bringing this epic to life. The team seems to really love the source and to respect it at every opportunity. For every change I don’t love, there are so many other things I adore. I think the fans are the winners here. (Except when it comes to merchandizing—how is Amazon not all over this??)

TL;DR: Book great, show a little different but also great, and I’m dying for Season 2.

I started to dislike Teen wolf the more I stepped out of the fandom bc I realised people hate Scott for no reason?? Like ppl always wanted stiles as the mc bc they just want a twinky quirky white boy to focus on and made it about him when it’s Scott’s show!! And they turn every character into a stereotype. The fandom decided that Derek is just an asshole, Issac is stupid, Lydia is vain, Allison is unfeeling and Kira is dismissible. And the show just kinda let that happen bc they never addressed any of the trauma they went through. Also all the fucking racism from j*ff like, he literal treated Tyler posey like shit, told him he wasn’t allowed to get tattoos, didn’t give him space to grieve his mother, treated him as less than his co-stars, and then the way Arden was treated?? Literally shoving her aside when her ethnicity wasn’t needed for the show anymore and again, treated her as less than her costars. It just ruins anything good about the show.

i do think there is a degree to which certain kinds of Instagram activists have convinced themselves that traumatising themselves in solidarity is a useful form of activism. [This is completely about me and my personal response to the WoT books.] When I was reading the series the first time, way back in the day, I was coming from a fairly sheltered upbringing. And I mean that in a good way, mostly. I was studying to go to medical school, I was in a long distance relationship with the man I eventually married (still going strong at 18 years), and I related quite a bit to Nynaeve.

I was also raised that sex belonged in marriage. I know purity culture has caused a lot of harm and can really mess people up, but at least they way I was taught it, it wasn’t a bad thing, at least not for me. It was kind of, you do your homework before you watch tv, you eat your vegetables before dessert, and you build a relationship and make the commitment before you have sex.

(And, I mean, if you want to eat cake first and the veggies later, or skip the veggies all together and go for an all-you-can-eat dessert buffet, as long as everyone is a consenting adult, go for it! But I wanted an eat-your-veggies-first relationship, and so did Nynaeve. And I think I stretched that metaphor as far as it can go!)

So, I miss that in the series. And I get it, stuff gets changed, and I love the scenes we got (and good for Nynaeve for going for what she wanted! I would too if Daniel Henney was involved!). I just really liked that small part of the books, which in modern lit and entertainment isn’t played out positively very much.

Anyway, this change from book to tv is a big one for me, personally, but I love that I can enjoy both sides of the story. More fanfic fodder! Different ways to explore a relationship I love! Sometimes, changing something you love dearly doesn’t diminish the original thing, just creates more opportunities!
