oh i kept forgetting to ask!

seeing derek’s backstory for your rewrite, i was wondering what rowans’s role would be since in canon, he did raise derek sorta…?

Derek is not a good person, but he is written as a full character instead of just a villain. This post talks about his emotions and his thoughts, this is not excuses or showing him as good. He isn't a good person, and he is especially not a good father.

If some details conflict with past posts, then I do apologize for that, I'm in the process of trying to fully blueprint the rewrite and some things are getting slight fixing. I think this, and especially Aaron, are staying mostly consistent though.

Rowan was hired to take care of Derek, like a babysitter but.. with the training to kill if needed, which is something Rowan thought was completely uncalled for from Dereks father. How dangerous could a child be?

He quickly became just part of the family, and Derek saw him as more of a father for obvious reasons. He showed child Derek what a normal life could have been like, though that was only when they could escape from his father. It wasn't often, but the lasting effects were important.

Dereks father, and Rowan, were big parts of Dereks backstory. With his father being a very awful man, giving Derek the same isolation and mistreatment that Derek later continued towards Aaron.

Rowan was the light, the reason Derek had a sense of understanding that his childhood wasn't good.. understanding that he was not good to Aaron, Rowan was the reason for Dereks conflicted feelings.

When his father died, Rowan stepped up and raised Derek. The right way, but the effect and damage from his father had been done.

While Derek chose to continue his own fathers choices with his son, he knew it was wrong and knew it was just hurting his son, because he had Rowan show him happiness in his youth.

Rowan wasn't quiet about his very strong disappointment in Dereks parenting, and to be honest? Derek was strongly disappointed in himself as well, though he didn't stop.

Derek understood he was doing harm to Aaron, but he thought the tactics worked on him so.. why not his son? Of course, by the time Aaron was in college he was filled with more regret than before, his son was an adult and hated him. Derek expected that, knew it would be the outcome, but he still felt ashamed and guilty.

So, he hired Rowan to make sure his son was at least safe, and doing normal life things.. he knew Rowan would provide that.

And Derek stepped out of the picture, until much later.

MYSTREET SEASON THREE - CASUAL

i am aware that this photo is from FCU but it's his base fit for s3, s4, pdh s2, and FCU so it doesn't really matter. literally the only change is how glittery his eyes get.

regardless of how smelly it might be from how often he wears it, its a good fit. navy blue suit contrasts with the bright red tie well and the belt actually matches the fit as opposed to actively taking years off of my life.

also, the high contrast tie pulls the eye towards derek's bland and boring face, which would be a really impressive if this was a medium where the characters could visually emote

what better way to show off ur checkerboard abs than holding an axe in the snow in nothing but black leggings.

monotone hawaiian shirt was a weird choice but it was executed competently. the flowers are way too bright but its not awful. the idea of derek's booty shorts are fine, but why are they in two different shades of shit brown??? just put him in khaki??? or denim????

comsidering this is the season derek gets orbed there are barely any good pictures of this fit. this edit was the only half decent one, and i can't even see the botoom half of his torso.

its fine??? plain white v neck and light grey button up are bland, but inoffensive. zane wore it better, though.

Derek only has two raccoons who are both female but none of them turned out good, Derek just treats them better than his own children and believes they can do no wrong.

Ate his food? Well obviously that's their food now.

Scratched and bit him so he would have to go to the hospital for a rabies shot? Obviously they were just playing.

Destroyed all of mankind? OH WELL.

The raccoons are the only children he treats better than his own children and doesn't care if they burn down the house, they are spoiled little brats.

Okay the aphmau wiki says derek killed a friend of his in his childhood and that’s why he isolated himself, which is insane but cool, but I cannot find any evidence of this anywhere? Does anyone know when this happened?

i think the scene that lives rent free in my head was the one where derek is telling garte that zack, elizabeth, and michael are on the island and yk what garte says?

i have such a vivid memory of sitting in my kitchen after school and physically recoiling when he said that

i get it younger audience blah blah but imagine how much better it would have been if he had just stared at derek for a second and said, “you’re fucking shitting me, right?”

What made you take Dereks character in the direction you did? Reading your rewrite now, very interesting take on the character.

I love morally gray characters, and I love showing things like generational abuse in my stories. [ As a victim of that, it can be helpful to showcase it, like venting in a way.]

Derek made awful mistakes, and even as he was actively choosing to make them - he was regretting them. Derek was doing to Aaron, what his father did to him. It's no excuse for what he did, but it's a reason. It's the only way he knew how to handle the ultima curse, he was afraid of it and himself, so he continued what his father did because he thought that it worked on him.. so he thought it would work again.

Derek, even though canon is shit, has always been one of my favorites in my rewrite. Because he is complex and actually has development and an arc.

Derek is honestly based on my own mother, in the ways of continuing cycles of abuse and growing into a better person later on in life. Part of why I love the character.

Headcanon: Derek is an amazing speller and is decent with grammar, but he does not separate his paragraphs which makes it hard for co-workers to comprehend what he’s saying without squinting. And even then, it might take a while to understand without getting a headache first.
