“Nancy! Guess what I found?” you called, in a singsong manner.

“My car keys?” The redhead turned around to look at you from her place at her desk. 

“Well, of course, but also something else…” You shook the keychain in your right hand, but kept the other behind your back. Nancy raised her eyebrows expectantly and a half smile appeared on her face. “The map of the forbidden catacombs! With the entrance spot and everything.”

“No, you didn’t!” Nancy jumped from her chair and, in mere milliseconds, stood in front of you to engulf you on a rib-breaking hug. She was beaming, just like every time something went well on an investigation.

You wrapped your arms around her as best as you could with the items on your hands, being extra careful to not tear the ancient piece of paper. “Yes I did! Don’t ask me how though, I don’t think you wanna know.”

“Ha, ha, you are soooo funny.” She rolled her eyes. “We both know you wouldn’t dare break middle school rules, nevermind the actual law.”

“What can I say? Maybe being around you so much is starting to rub off on me.” You sported a mischievous grin when she rolled her eyes once again and leaned in for a kiss, which you returned gladly. You gave her a last peck on her cheek and stood beside her, offering your arm to link with hers. “Shall we?”

“We shall.” Sporting huge smiles, the both of you walked to the blue car outside her house and you tossed her the keys. She really was looking bright today, all happy and excited. You love to see her like this.

That was long ago. The ghost you were looking for ended up being part of a cluster case, something very new to the crew. Still, you managed, as always. After days of research, a messy and exhausting hand-to-ghostly-hand combat, and a bunch of salt bombs, it was all over. You had gotten an awful purplish slash on your back that wouldn’t quite heal, but it was fine, it acted as a normal scar anyway.

Thinking back to it now it felt silly, a fun little supernatural mystery to solve. Now everything is complicated, personal. Since Temperance casted the curse on you and Nancy nothing is the same. You haven’t seen your girlfriend’s smile in a while. 

“The universe will do everything in its power to prevent you from enjoying the time you are in each other’s presence. Accidents, missteps… death? But you will be in love forever, unable to move on, unable to be distant. Until death do you part.” Had been the sentence. 

When Nancy told you this, you didn’t believe it to be such a bad thing (except for the dying part, of course), you thought you could get through it. At that time, all that had happened was you kicking a table leg right on your pinkie toe at The Claw, and your girlfriend spitting coffee from her nose. It surely had been unfortunate, but you had laughed about it. Ace had even jokingly started calling you trouble couple. Also, the being in love part you were already counting on, so what was the issue?

Things had escalated though. First it was breaking glasses, pumping your knees on furniture, burning skin on the stove. “Accidents happen”, you had said. You were actually known for being a little clumsy, no biggie. Then came the misstep on the stairs that had ended in a concussion, the falling into the sea from the docks and almost drowning, the car crash… You had tried taking a break from each other, moving away for some time to see what happened, but it had made you both awfully ill. Nancy had ended up in the hospital.

Being together was dangerous, and so was being apart. So you took the offensive. You were a witch, and so was Bess, you’d figure something out.

It has been months now. Nancy’s health is deteriorating, her face paler each day, dark circles under her eyes, new scars and bruises adorning her body; you are in no better shape anyway. 

“Baby wake up please…” you whispered. Your girlfriend was curled up in your arms, her sleeping face so soft despite everything. “Today we are trying the counter-spell Bess found, remember?”

After a few seconds, she stirs awake. For a moment she looks at you like she used to, shimmering eyes glad to feel you with her. Then the heaviness takes over, she nods in agreement and gets up to use the bathroom. You worry she might cut herself with her shaving machine, or slip on the tiles and hit her head on the toilet. 

That’s all you do lately, worry. Maybe that's what will finally kill you.

She comes out of the bathroom safe and sound, and you feel like crying in relief. “So, are they all coming here?” She asks while looking for a clean shirt to put on. 

You swallow the knot on your throat. “Yeah, Bess said it was better if we didn’t move too much. They are bringing the supplies too.”

“Good.”

You hear three firm knocks on the old wooden door. You look at Nancy, place your hand on her knee reassuringly, and stand from the couch to greet your friends. A string of curses can be heard when the door handle gives you an electric shock, but everything is fine. Nick, George, Ace, and Bess have their hands packed with bags and boxes, and they all look ready for war. You are gonna end this, once and for all.

The pitying looks from everyone in the last few months annoyed the fuck out of Nancy, so she shut off almost everyone in her life. You had tried to talk some sense into her, only managing to get her to meet up with friends and family once a week in small gatherings or movie nights you organized. 

“Here goes nothing.” Nancy lets out a heavy sigh, you have a feeling she doesn’t believe this is going to work out. You squeeze her hands and conjure a calming smile on your face, as much to appease her nerves as yours.

Everything is set up, Nancy and you are standing face to face in a salt circle. The studio is flooding with lit candles, the flames waving with each breath you take. Your friends are standing in each of the four cardinals, a few feet away from you, holding a set of obscure antiques you know nothing about. You should get back to researching soon.

Bess starts chanting in latin, the others mimicking the phrase over, and over, and over again. Your body feels heavier, a buzzing sound in your ear. You look up to check on your girlfriend, and she looks weirdly brightened. Her eyes seem more attentive, her expression more alive, her cheeks are flushed as if she just came back from a short run. You are glad she’s already doing better, and would love to stay and enjoy the moment with her, but you feel yourself slipping away. 

She doesn’t notice, her eyes are too focused on the light smoke coming out from your chests, and you don’t blame her, it really is a show to see.

The second Ace, Bess, George, and Nick stop chanting, darkness engulfs the space. The candles release their iconic burnt-wick smell. The only noise is everybody’s quiet breathing. Nobody dares to speak, but the same question plagues their minds: Did it work?

Your body, that long ago stopped feeling yours, collapses. Nancy barely manages to soften your fall by getting a grip of your arm. The moment breaks, your girlfriend is screaming your name, but you can’t hear her. Nick is checking your pulse, George fishes her phone from her bag and is already dialing 911, Bess wonders what went wrong.

You see, from somewhere above your body, how Nancy holds you in her arms, gets a strand of hair out of your face, tells you that everything will be okay. She's crying, screaming to no one in particular to do something to help you. You are unresponsive, every single muscle limp, you wish you could just tell her how much you love her.

The door to Johnny’s shack shut with a bang, followed by a mumbled curse. From his bed, your eyes fluttered open. Between the mess of flower-patterned sheets and pillows you were buried in, you could see the man of the house take a step back to the door, then his eyes flicked to you to see if he had interrupted your sleep. You shut your eyes, too tired to take in the dreaded sunlight pouring in; you were so well-rested that you could fall asleep all over again—the feeling of sleep was addictive to your tired body. The only energy your body had was to pull the covers of his linens over your head with one hand. The earthy scents of him filled out the absence of his actual presence.

Your mind slipped away for a second, back into the dreamy state of consciousness where responsibilities didn’t exist and life had no issues. The man entering your cabin could solve about ninety-nine of your problems, though, and you slowly started to realize that you had an increasingly worrying problem on your plate. You peeked through the slits of the blanket at him. Even without looking at him in a clear view, he still looked like Adonis in your crooked and half-obscured-by-the-pillow perspective. Covered in his prey’s blood, his hunt was successful. But, hunting? Johnny usually woke you up at five in the morning, when the creatures of the night were heading to bed after a night of existence. You hunted in the realm of the crepesculars, operating on the thin line between night and day, all to maximize the hours you had to hunt and he was already coming back from it? It couldn’t be that time already, could it?

Johnny heard the sheets ruffle, and your breath hastily drew in with a panic. You had overslept. He let his knife clatter in the sink, turning to face you while leaning back against the counter. You could see the blood more clearly, it was smeared all over the front of his body. Staining his jeans—his favorite pair, the ones you said made his ass look the best—and trailing all over his torso before ending with a bloody handprint across his face. “It’s just me.”

“How fucked am I?” You asked, knocking the sheets off your body. Being a part of his family meant you had to contribute to the dinner at the end of every day, to make sure that everything was functional since you were Johnny’s piece—his pride. He provided less than a solid answer as you took a moment to acclimate yourself to the day. Ever since you moved in with Johnny, you had never really had a morning like this; a morning where your day started so late. Nancy liked when Johnny’s partners would accompany him on hunts and his more normal errands like getting car parts from the mechanic a few towns over and getting fruits from the market a few miles down the road, and she was too unpredictable to not heed the warnings of. Most of them came from Johnny, so that’s why you knew to take it seriously. It’s why today needed to be just like the rest, regardless of whether or not it was your birthday.

“Happy birthday, sweetness.” He smirked, knowing that even in the real world, you wouldn’t have any responsibilities today. “I woulda woken up right next to ya, but I was out huntin’ for your birthday dinner… and doin’ a few other things.”

“So, you did the hunting, tidied up around here, and went into town?” You asked, drawing near him. The blood had yet to dry, its sheen shining strong with the cracks of sun peeking through the window. He must have purposefully gone out hunting while shirtless, too. “What exactly is my present? A whole new Johnny?”

He let his head drop down and looked at his feet, rubbing his boot a little harder into the floor. “Something like that.”

It had only been a few minutes but the position you were in changed drastically. Johnny gave you a rundown of everything about your gift, including the various items that were included in it. One of which was a can of whipped cream that he picked up with the fresh fruit and placed it alongside them in the fridge—strawberries were in season, so two small wooden crates filled the space in his fridge next to the canister. The second thing was Johnny himself, which came as a shock. His first gift made sense because it was a sweet retreat from the many meals of savory meat from your hunts being fashioned into the three core meals one must eat every day, but the second was new. Different. Sensitive. He proposed it without looking you in the eye, so you didn’t believe it at first.

“I figured I’d be nice and give ya’ full, unlimited access. Get yer fix for the rest of the year so you stop chewin’ my damn ear off.” He sounded hesitant to offer it up, the fatigue in his tone from hunting as well as having to hear your incessant cries about wanting to experiment with him rang through. But today was your birthday, so he wanted to make it special.

Even if he didn’t want it at first, his tone shifted when your lips finally collided. You had been moving closer to him since you left his bed and now you were finding your way back to it with him in your arms. Your attempts to stay blood-free worked until you went to push him by the shoulder and back onto his bed, some of it smearing over your hand. Johnny’s legs hung over the bed and nearly touched the floor, placing his head around the upper middle of his bed and giving him room to lift his arms above him. This gave you the perfect access to get to work.

“Hell, I think this’ll be more than you can chew,” he teased. He cocked his head to look at where you were headed, your body was noticeably gone just as the fun was starting. But then, Johnny saw you return from across the shack with the whipped cream in hand.

From there, he became your already-painted canvas. The blood on him was the first coat of paint—still setting, still drying. Next in the assemblage was a healthy layer of the sweet foam. The cap came off with ease and you started coating him in it. You drew a heart over his chest first, then followed by swirling the foamy cream over his nipples. Johnny moaned at the cold sensation against his hot body. The way the can inconsistently sprayed droplets outside of your designated whipping area to add to the mess of red all over him. Johnny was already starting to feel desperate to the point that you had to shoo away one of his hands from knocking the cold cream off his sensitive nipples. You had never seen him like this before. Different. Sensitive. This was such a fast way to make him cave, and you had barely done anything at all! He must have insanely delicate around his buds.

You pulled back to admire your work. He noticed your puzzled look as you scanned over it like an artist who nearly had everything put together the way you liked it. “What’s wrong, sweetness?”

“It’s missing something.” You pouted. He had the perfect milky base, a cavalcade of saltiness topped with the sweet cream and bloody cherry drizzle. Though, something was amiss. The final thing to adorn him with that would make the centerpiece in the middle of the bed complete; something that would win the county fair. It wasn’t there. No, it was still sitting in the fridge.

You followed a loose path back to his fridge, swinging the door open and grabbing the strawberries on the shelf. Setting them on the counter, you grabbed two—one for you, and one for Johnny—and made your way back to him. He was still untouched, still perfectly in place without a hair moved for you. If he thought the sweet cold ivory was painful on his marinated skin, the cold sensation of chilled strawberries sent him over the edge. You ran it over him like an ice cube, watching it pick up some of the blood and whipped cream, cutting right through the heart you carefully drew over his chest. The strawberry was run across his body like the last bite of a meal with a sauce that you really want to get the flavor out of. Then, you lifted the thing to your mouth, taking a bite and savoring the bitter and sweet combination of flavor. The notes of metal in the blood were hidden and blended into the oncoming notes of sweet cream, followed by the tart taste of the berry.

Johnny’s face lightened as he watched you go in for seconds, dipping the rest of the strawberry in the sauce spread all over his body. You did the same with the second one, making it with the same amount of gore-soaked toppings and twisted dabble of whipped cream as the last. 

You offered the decadent strawberry to Johnny, but made one condition clear, “Bite down on this for me. Don’t eat it yet.”

His face twisted into one of confusion, but he didn’t question you. He let out a soft, “Aw, hell…” His mouth stayed open, waiting for you to bring the fruit to his lips. He accepted it when it was placed to his lips, wrapping them around the fruit, and, from the inside, he ran his tongue over the parts he could taste and lick at. He wanted to pierce the berry’s flesh, to make its flavor bleed into the rest.

While he was distracted with that, you took the opportunity to get to work. You lowered yourself back down so that your face was level with his pecs and started lapping at the dollop of whipped cream swirled around one of his nipples. You licked the soft peak away until there was only his hard pebbled flesh, so red and sensitive from just a few presses of your tongue. Johnny squirmed, a moan being muffled by the strawberry in his mouth. Things only got worse when you moved over to his other bud, doing the same motions to wipe away the cream and get to the really sensitive part. He struggled not to bite down on the strawberry, or to end this little reverie of lenience he offered for your birthday. He gave you so much power and he hated you for it. He hated that you made him squirm and buck his hips with need, desperate to pull you off his nipple and guide you to his waiting dick. But he fought the urge for you, to give you the control you deserve on a day like today. 

All he knew was that the feeling was too much, the juxtaposition of cold cream twirled around his rosy tips to your hot tongue leaving them a wet and sticky mess was much too much. In what was probably one of the fastest instances ever—he came. His jeans darkened with a soupy mess of white just like the melted remains of cream running over his chest and onto the bed. If this was desert, you couldn’t wait to get to dinner.

Your fingertips grazed across the scar on your left hand, memories flooding your mind: your screams as that damn Demogorgon tried to kill you, the flames against your skin as you burned the hell out of it, the pace of your heartbeat quickening with every breath you took.

Anxiety washed over your body like a tidal wave, crashing around you in violent splashes. Your heart thumped aggressively against your ribcage, your lungs on the verge of collapse as the memories brought back the panic from last year.

A gentle but deep voice pulled you out of the dark hole, his words a lifesaver, pulling you up from the crashing waves of panic. "You okay?" Two simple words, yet somehow they felt like a raft in the ripping current of your anxiety attack.

A shaky exhale escaped your lips as you brought yourself out of your panicked state, poorly attempting to even out your breathing as you met Steve with wet, glassy eyes.

You shook your head, your eyes darting back down to the giant gash placed in the middle of your hand. "Can you…" you attempted to get the words out, "Can you just hold me for a while?"

Without hesitation, Steve hopped out of his bed and climbed into yours, enveloping you in his warm embrace and cologne-infused aroma. He pulled you flush against him, holding you to his chest and wrapping his large muscled arms ever so tight around your frame. "Not that I need a reason, because you're my best friend and I'd do anything for you, but is there something wrong? Is that why you wanted me over here?"

You nodded against his chest, tears slipping down your cheeks as you made another lousy attempt to even your breaths. "Do you ever get pulled back into that night? Like, you just see something and it instantly reminds you of November twelfth?"

He chuckled, and surprisingly the noise helped to ground you a little. "All the time. I can't even look at a nail without getting sucked back into it."

His words reminded you that you hadn't been alone that night, nor were you alone now. Still, that imperfection on your hand found a way to mock you, tell you the exact opposite of what Steve had just said. "Every time I see the scar, it pulls me back in. I feel like I'm drowning, like I can't breathe or hear or feel anything." Your tears picked up speed and your chest seemed like it was on the verge of collapse. "The sad part is that it happens nearly every day and I still can't tell when it's gonna hit me."

Something in his voice sounded like an idea had popped into his head as he moved away from you, reaching for the nightstand with one hand and grabbing your wrist with the other. "Can I see your hand for a minute?" Steve asked with furrowed brows.

You were nervous about the idea of looking at your hand again, but you trusted Steve with your life. He held your hand in his larger one, palm facing upward, and you suddenly became aware of his skin touching yours. "Close your eyes," he instructed, his breath hot against your ear where he leaned in close to you.

A shaky breath escaped your lips as you closed your eyes, trying to find something, anything to imagine besides that night. Just as your vision began to fill with painful flashbacks of that night, something cold and wet glided across your palm, and your eyes shot open to figure out what it was.

He must've found a Sharpie in the nightstand drawer, because he was drawing soft strokes around the scar on your hand with it. Your brows pinched together in confusion as you watched his movements. "What are you doing?"

Steve just kept on drawing. "Now, whenever you see this scar, you'll have something to focus on besides the memories. You can look at these and think about this memory."

You never realized just how big his hand was compared to yours until he flattened your palm and held it beside his. He'd scattered doodles of stars and sparkles around the gash on your hand, much in the same fashion as the tattoo he had on his own palm. You often forgot about the tattoo he'd gotten over the summer, a couple months after his eighteenth birthday, but after that night, you were sure you'd never forget it.

Your eyes went glassy again, this time with happy tears, as you met his gaze again. "I love you so much, I could actually kiss you right now."

It slipped out before you even had time to process the words. Your heart thumped as you muttered out an apology, though some part of your brain wasn't sorry for saying it. You'd loved Steve for a very long time, his gesture had only further confirmed it. On the other hand, he had been your best friend for longer, and you couldn't believe you'd screwed it all up, just by letting those twelve little words slip out.

"Hey, Byers?" he stopped you mid-apology, his aforementioned large hands moving to hold both sides of your face.

You gulped, not entirely believing this was happening. You'd dreamed and fantasized so many times that it would, but had fully convinced yourself it was all a fairytale, never to leave the pages of your mind. Your gaze flicked from his eyes down to his lips and back up again, your body involuntarily dropping hints of what you wanted.

For once, Steve figured out how to take a hint, pulling your lips flush against his. Your skin felt hot as you processed what was happening, and had it not been for your hands darting up to hold his, you might've simply assumed it was folklore you'd conjured up in your brain.

When he pulled away, he leaned his forehead against yours, neither you quite ready to break physical contact. His hands settled beneath your sweatshirt as he flashed that million dollar smile of his, and all the coldness of your heart melted away in an instant. It was the first time Steve had ever put his fingertips on you so many times in one night, but you hoped it would not be the last.

He chuckled, a couple happy tears falling down his cheek. "Figured if I can't make it go away forever, I could at least kiss it better temporarily," Steve admitted, a blush tinting the expanse of his face.

This time, your palms wrapped around the sides of his face, his jawline sharp enough to cause another cut on your hand. "You did a good job, Harrington. For a second, it almost felt like the world wasn't ending."

Teary eyelashes tickled your skin. "Mind if I do it again?"

You shook your head without a second thought. "As if you even need to ask."

Your friends and you had the brilliant idea to do a Christmas Santa, and you drew none other than your not-so secret friend with benefit: Eddie Munson.

Okay maybe you would like to be in an actual relationship with him, but you are to chicken to tell him, so you are content with what you got and do not want to ruin it with your feelings.

You found funny that you drew him and so you decided to by him the worst secret Santa gift humanly possible: something sex related.

You even went as far as to go to the only Sex Toys shop in Hawkins, and you were really embarrassed when you went to the check out when the cashier had to scan the bondage harness and cuffs. You blushed from embarrassment and left the store as fast as humanly possible. “No way,” Leo breathed sarcastically, and shuffled onto the end of the bed. He watched as they chewed on the fingernails on their other hand and stared out the window absently. “Are… are you okay?”

He blinked. “All of them are the important ones.”

“Nah,” they waved the wad of padding and plaster in the air casually, nearly knocking it into the wall, but Leo managed to scramble across and stop them from reversing all eight hours of WIll’s work. “I only need the middle one.”

Somehow they hadn’t noticed, or they didn’t care, that Leo was pretty much laying across their lap.

You took the rest of the school day off, hauling his body deeper and deeper into the woods. Far away from the school so no one would find him. You put his body in a ditch and packed dirt on top of him. Then you went home.

You scrubbed his blood off of you and got rid of your ruined clothes. You went to school the next day and acted surprised when you were told he was missing. They had found his blood and cap in the woods.

That kick started the investigation for him. There were search parties and everything. But they never found his body, and you were never a suspect by some miracle. But you still carried the weight of that.

“Kid?”

You flinched, snapped out of your own mind and stared up at the cop, who once again looked normal. “What?” You rasped, mouth gone dry.

“I asked if you’re okay,” he tiredly repeated. “You’re looking nauseous there.”

“I’m fine,” you stammered, looking away from him and down at your hands. You could almost feel the hot, sticky blood covering them.

The car began to move again. “What the hell was that?” Nancy asked. “I said act casual.”

“Hey, Nancy, back off,” Fred cut her off, twisting around in his seat to look at you with a worried frown. “Are you okay?”

“Fine,” you muttered, clenching your hands into fists before relaxing them. You looked up at Fred and attempted a smile, “I’m fine. Sorry.”

Fred pursed his lips, but nodded. “Okay,” he said, turning around. You knew he didn’t believe you, but you kept quiet.

"Fred, come with me," Nancy requested, holding her notepad and gesturing for Fred to hurry and follow. "Y/N will you be okay alone?" She asked, though not unkindly. 

"Yep," you replied. "I'll just…enjoy the company of my new friend." You pointed to the dog you’d just discovered moments prior. “Have fun questioning that guy.”

Nancy smiled. "We won't be long," she promised before rushing off.

Fred lingered, pressing a kiss to your cheek. "Be right back," he promised with a smile. "Thanks again for coming with me, Y/N."

He was off before you could reply, but you didn't mind much. This was technically his job after all. And there was a thrilling story here somewhere. A girl was brutally murdered.

You bent down to pet the dog with a smile. "Guess it's just me and you, huh, buddy?" You asked. "Didn't even wanna come," you muttered, shaking your head. "This place is haunted now that Chrissy is dead. But here I am, talking to a dog."

The dog barked.

You pat the dog's head. "Yeah yeah, I'm sorry," you replied. You kneeled down in silence for a moment or two, absentmindedly petting the dog while you watched Nancy and Fred, well, moreso Fred, talk to the guy at the picnic table. 

You flinched when you heard the loud ringing of the clock, head snapping up. You looked at the forest, where the noise was coming from. Fear gripped your body, turning your blood to ice. You had heard the noise before and had been overcome with a very terrifying hallucination.

“Did you hear that, boy?” You whispered, glancing at the dog who began to bark furiously. You swallowed thickly at the persistent chiming and glanced back. Fred and Nancy were still busy talking to the guy, so you figured you had a minute or two to figure out where the hell the noise was coming from.

You took off towards the woods.

“I’ll be right back,” Fred muttered to Nancy, eyes glued to where he’d left you just a few minutes ago. The dog you’d been petting was barking like crazy, which had caught his attention in the first place. He approached the dog, looking around for any sight of you. “Y/N?” He called.

“What’s going on?” Nancy asked, joined at his side. “Where did they go?”

“I don’t know,” Fred answered. “Y/N!” He called again, stopping when he reached the fence where you’d just been. He stared at the woods. “Y/N!”

“Maybe they went home?” Nancy asked. “They were acting weird in the car, and they didn’t even want to be here,” she recalled.

“No,” Fred dismissed. You wouldn’t have taken off like that. At least, not without telling him. Besides, it was a decently far walk from here to your house. “No, they wouldn’t have just left. Shit where did they go?” He asked, turning in a circle, looking around the trailer park for you.

“Are you sure?” Nancy asked, also looking around. “Y/N!” She joined in shouting. “Come on,” she abruptly said, turning around and walking abc towards the trailers.

“What?” Fred asked, hurrying after her. He didn’t want to lose her too.

“We’ll ask around. See if anyone has seen them,” Nancy explained, still calling your name.

When they finally spoke to the officer about you, he ordered them to stay put while he called for backup to search for you. So they stayed in the car all night. Neither got any sleep that night.

Fred was beside himself as the panic finally caught up to him. He kept imagining the worst, you were dead. But Nancy always talked him down from those thoughts, because that wasn’t possible. She told him that you’d probably wandered into the woods and gotten lost.

You were fine.

Fred genuinely wasn’t sure what to believe. They were hanging around a murder sight. What if the murderer returned and took you? It wasn’t impossible!

But they were sent home the next morning when they still didn’t find you. But Nancy didn’t want Fred to be alone with this news so she invited him over to her house, which is where they both were now.

Fred was nursing a cup of coffee, sitting up in Nancy’s room while she paced.

“I don’t understand,” Nancy said. “How haven’t the police found them? They couldn’t have gotten that far, could they?” She asked.

“They’re fast,” Fred murmured. “They could have gotten plenty far if they were running from something,” he said, exhaustion weighing over his head like a cloud. He sighed and forced himself to drink the coffee. “What if they’re hurt?” He asked, looking up at Nancy.

“They’re not,” Nancy said, but her words didn’t match her tone. She sounded desperate to believe you were fine. “They’re fine, okay? They’re okay,” she repeated.

“But what if they’re not?” Fred cried. “If they got hurt, it’s my fault! I made them come with me even though I knew they didn’t want to. Nancy, it’s my fault!” He said, the tears he’d been holding back all night finally fell, dripping down his cheeks.

“What?” Nancy asked. “Fred, this isn’t your fault. God have you been thinking that this whole time? It’s not your fault,” she repeated. “Y/N wanted to come with you. They just…they’re just lost, Fred,” she said, sitting besides him for moral support.

Fred pushed his glasses askew as he tried to stop his tears, wiping his face. He shook his head, “it is my fault,” he whimpered, more tears spilling down his cheeks.

“It’s not,” Nancy repeated. “They came with us on their own volition.”

The piercing wail of a siren interrupted her.

Fred’s stomach dropped. He froze, looking at Nancy, who’s expression crumpled. She stood up and wasted no time in heading out of her room and down the stairs, Fred right behind her. He wiped his tears and stopped besides her at the door.

Nancy quickly opened the door, obviously startling the officer who had his fist raised to knock. He had his hat in his hands and the woman standing next to him didn’t look much better.

“Can we come in?” The man asked.

Nancy nodded as she stepped aside to let teh two in before shutting the door.

“It’s best if you sit,” the woman advised. “Are your parents home?”

Nancy led them to the living room and sat with Fred on one of the couches. “No,” she answered. “No, my parents aren’t home. It’s just us.”

The man and woman sat across from them. “My name is Melissa, I’m a medical examiner and I’m afraid I’m here to deliver bad news,” she said calmly.

Already, tears began to brim Fred’s eyes, dread paralyzing him in his seat. He didn’t want to hear this next part, but there was no running from it.

“Last night your partner and friend, Y/N was murdered about a mile east of the highway,” Melissa said, putting it all out there.

Fred’s heart shattered and it felt as such. “No,” he choked out as he leaned over, burying his face in his hands as hiccuping sobs now filled the air. He felt like he couldn’t breathe, like there was a vice around his heart. His world had just come crashing down around him.

“We positively identified the body as Y/N L/N,” Melissa continued. “I’m sorry for your loss, I know this is difficult.”

“This isn’t fair!” He cried, shaking his head. “This isn’t fair!” He repeated in despair.

Nancy put her hand on his back for support and he drew away from the touch. He didn’t want to be touched. He had never liked physical affection. He only accepted your touch. You treated him like he was someone to be cherished. And you did cherish him, even when he was at his lowest you loved him.

Now you were gone and Fred’s skin crawled at the idea of physical contact. He sniffled, trying to wipe his eyes as he looked up at the two adults. “Do you know who—?” He couldn’t finish his question, the knot in his throat made it difficult to make a sound.

The two exchanged looks and the officer took over. “We found their body in a state similar to Chrissy Cunningham’s. We believe the two murders are linked and we have some suspects in mind,” he informed.  “I’m very sorry for your loss. Will you two be okay?” He asked.

“Yeah,” Nancy answered, sniffling quietly. “Thank you officers,” she said, standing up and showing them to the door.

Fred followed. “Thank you,” he said quietly, watching them walk back to their cars. He paused when he saw four people get out of a brown car in sync. “...is that Steve Harrington?”

a “genius in his field”, the type you only thought appears inbetween the pages of sherlock holmes or nancy drew. the type that could deduct an entire lifestory from a single line uttered by a suspect.

in short-- a genius that you can’t keep up with.

people in the agency had thrown you symphathetic looks as they see you trailing behind the detective, following him in & out of rooms, risking your nose as he almost slams the door in your face, unfamiliarised with the prescence of another behind him.

although sometimes you think he gets too comfortable with the idea that you’re always there, shoving his files at you whenever he see fit for you to dive after it before the papers hit the floor and the way he shakes his empty coffee cup at you and gives you The Look.

sometimes you feel like you’re ten days behind in investigations when he finally presents his thesis. hey-- now where did the fact that her ex-husband was with her ex-girlfriend’s cousin from now? oh you found that out yourself?

its the blatant disregard for your skills that drive a wedge between you two. to anyone, its obvious that you’re falling behind, even if you are the best graduate of your class. you’re delegated to note scribbling and picture taking, and albedo simply sighs whenever you ask for clarification or don’t get his odd ramblings.

“i can’t read your mind!” you had yelled at him, “so i’m sorry you can’t stand me!”

the door had slammed on him this time, the room instantly getting dark as the light of his candle flickers out from the sudden gust of wind.

for the first time in his life, this is not a mystery he wants to solve- because he knows the culprit in the end, himself.

mike wheeler x gn!reader fluff/comfort

warnings: 1k words, season 4, self harm (on thighs), insecurity because of it, long haired reader (long enough for a ponytail), kinda ooc (i live in delusion)

the basement lights were off. you persisted that they were off. it was the middle of summer, the heat taking over every single part of your being. your complaints and groans of discomfort didn't go unnoticed by mike. "if you're that hot maybe you shouldn't be wearing sweatpants." it was absentminded and probably a joke, but you couldn't help the anxious feeling that bubbled inside you.

you thought about taking him seriously, taking your pants off to replace them with an old pair of shorts that don't fit mike anymore that his mother was probably going to donate, but it made your skin crawl with discomfort. you laugh at the comment, probably too long after the comment was even said. mike brushed it off, not caring to question why you laughed a whole 4 minutes later.

you really didn't want to give in to the heat, but your pants were sticking to your legs and your hands were clammy and you were sure you could see the sweat starting to form on your forehead. mike may be oblivious sometimes but he noticed the way you swiped your palms against your pants to wipe the sweat off and the way you put your hair into a ponytail, which you never did. the fan was already on the highest it could go, so he didn't know what to do besides suggesting to take your pants off again.

"i have shorts you can wear you know, or you can even borrow some of nancy's. i'm sure she wouldn't mind." he had a concerned tone in his voice, it's not like he wanted you to die of a heat stroke in his basement. you thought for a moment, the heat clouding your thinking abilities. you sighed as you came to a conclusion. 

that was 10 minutes ago, the lights are now off and your sweat pants on the couch as mike hands you a pair of his old shorts. "why do the lights have to be off?" he questioned, dumbing it down to his partner didn't want him to see them changing, but still asking out of sheer curiosity. you took a moment to answer, coming up with the best excuse you could. 

"the lights produce heat, so it'll be cooler with them off." it wasn't a complete lie. it was true that light sources produce heat and with them off it might cool the room down but it was a lie to say that was the reason. he nodded as if that made total sense to him and sat down on the couch, folding your pants and placing them on the armrest. you sat down next to him, now focused on the tv that was playing a movie that you couldn't be bothered to focus on, bigger things to address. 

half an hour had passed. you could feel the relief in your body, your secret was still safe. the more the movie played the closer to mike you got. it wasn't on purpose, you weren't even really aware you were doing it. he didn't mind though, welcoming you with a hand on your thigh. fuck.

suddenly the movie was boring again and the room was just as hot as before. you didn't move, seeing if mike had any sort of reaction to the slightly raised bumps on your thigh. he seemed focused on the movie and you let out a breath you didn't know you were holding in. you were silently thanking mike for his obliviousness, for once it was coming in handy. 

but all feelings of celebration went out the window as mike rubbed his thumb along your thigh. he didn't turn to look but you could tell he was trying to figure out what was on your thigh. you bit your lip as you tried to figure out a way to get his hand off of you with suspicion but unfortunately, mike didn't wait for you to figure it out. 

"what's on your leg?" he still didn't look. you were grateful for that fact but the gratefulness was ambushed with fear and anxiety. you don't say anything, so he looks at you, unsure if you heard him over the television. "y/n?" you still don't say anything, your eyes locked with his. your eyes welt up with tears unbeknownst to mike due to the darkness of the room. "nothing." you whisper in a desperate attempt. 

it doesn't take a genius to figure it out. the combination of the bumps and your reaction and suddenly mike feels like the worst boyfriend ever. you could practically see the gears in mike's head turn as he tried to figure out how to make the situation less uncomfortable. his mind was racing with thoughts and realizations. 

you tried to contain your tears, but they fell anyway, catching glimpses of light from the moon. "hey, hey," he tried to console, his hand coming off of your scar-filled thigh and resting it on your face. you were embarrassed over anything, your darkest thoughts engraved on your legs that were now on display. "baby, look at me." you didn't want to comply to his request, you wanted to run out of his house and off the edge of the world.

he didn't let that happen though, instead moving his hand to your chin and gently turning your face to look at him. you couldn't look him in the eye, opting for his nose or even his mouth as he spoke. "are you alright?" you didn't expect that to be the first thing he said. you expected curses and words that were sure to cut deeper than the scars on your legs. 

you nod, not trusting your voice. he leaned forward and placed a gentle kiss on your forehead. he didn't ask any more questions, not that he didn't care but he knew you'd tell him when you were ready. he peppered more kisses on your face and you laughed. he smiled at the sound of your laughter. "i love you." he didn't say it often, maybe a total of 3 or 4 times within your long-term relationship, but he meant it with every fiber of his being.

and to prove it he sunk to his knees, pushing the fabric of the shorts up ever so slightly. he leaned down, letting his lips leave delicate kisses on each of your scars. you watched with awe in your eyes. he wasn't mad or disgusted or annoyed. you couldn't love this boy anymore even if you tried.
