An Open Letter to Nazi "Punks"

Why? Why do you insist on existing in a space that is not only fundamentally against you but also stands against your own beliefs? What machine do you think people are raging against? It isn't simply your parents or boss telling you what you can or can't do. It's the machine that chews up and spits people out when it's done with them. The machine that's run off of the flesh and blood of those unfortunate to not be born into the upper echelons of society. When you exist as part of the machine - or when you perpetuate that harm caused by it - how can you say to rage against it short of a misunderstanding of what punk is?

And this isn't to say that you have to be so marginalized to be allowed to be punk - the movement was started by the working class white man. It was a movement against classism, against a system that pitted human against human. So honestly anyone can be - and really everyone should be punk. But its not enough to throw on a jacket and listen to Sex Pistols. Punk isn't just an aesthetic or a taste in music. It is, honestly, a way of life. And that lifestyle is rooted in pushing for true equity. Joe Strummer of The Clash even said it, "in fact, punk rock means exemplary manners to your fellow human beings."

And that love for each other that Strummer is talking about isn't an unthinking limitless love. It means getting pissed when people are being treated unfairly. It means standing up for the oppressed and the marginalized and getting pissed off when those people are stepped on. Existing as a queer Asian is inherently punk because I exist in a system that wishes I were dead - that pushes for me to be killed off. How can you claim to be punk when you join in with that very system?

And I'm not trying to gatekeep the movement. I'm genuinely confused. I don't understand how people can listen to music by The Clash or Dead Kennedys or even Green Day and not hear what's being said. I don't understand how people can listen to these songs that talk about the lethal oppressiveness of the system and join in on that oppression. I don't understand how you can claim to be punk because you're lower class but then vote for a system that tightens the stranglehold with every passing legislature. You vote against your fellow human beings even though it inevitably tightens that grip around your neck and everyone knows it. Why? Is your hatred of your neighbour that powerful that you'll kill yourself to kill them? And it makes sense for you to turn around and claim to be punk?

If you go into the Punk subculture, please make sure you do FULL research on what you’re going into! I’m not saying don’t go into it, but please research to make sure it’s something you want to dip your toes into. And please god don’t just flood the Punk scene with bullshit tiktok “punks do xyz because it’s PUNK” like what happened with Witchcraft. This may sound a lil rude but bear with me

There IS criteria to being a Punk. This isn’t one of those things where you can change your clothes and claim, like VSCO or Scene! If you like punk style clothes, great! There are many other subcultures with similar styles! However Punk is, in essence, a political movement/statement!

The criteria for being a Punk are:

-Open Mindedness, meaning no phobias or ists. Punks are here to serve and uplift our community, not push us back. Gender, sexuality, race, none of that shit matters in the Punk community, unless someone’s being oppressed.

-Be kind. Not every punk can afford to buy a battle vest, not every punk can make their own. Punk is made from what you have available. I make my own patches because I can’t afford to buy them, but my Father would buy his patches because he didn’t have the time to make them. It’s not punk rock to make fun of someone because of what they do or don’t have.

-Punch Nazis. You don’t have to do it physically, not ever punk wants a charge. But we do not, and will not, ever side with Nazis.

-Fuck the Facists. Unfortunately we all have to live in a form of society and capitalism, there’s no escape. But a punk hates a Facist.

Basically Punks rely on the basis of “Every person is entitled to life, freedom, love and safety.” Sometimes things can’t always be so love and light, you don’t have to be a protesting rebel to be a punk, but in this subculture there are protesting rebel activists, and those are your family in this community.

Punk isn’t dead and with every surge of new baby punks and big stompies on the ground, we get closer to stopping racism, facism, and plain ol oppression, but it’s important we are all moving toward the same goal!

whats your opinion on the current punk discourse? i find it really stupid personally, it really just feels like the same discourse that always happens (young punks denying punk history, older punks not wanting to let their culture change, them fighting about it) but i want to hear your thoughts since im still fairly new to the culture.

OKAY. Please forgive me if words don't work right, I'm very tired at the moment. That said, I do have an opinion on this topic.

You mention that its the 'current' punk discourse, but honestly, I'd argue its been *the* punk discourse since at least the 2000s. By that point, the scene had been around for 30 years, long enough to have veteran punks and people very fresh to the punk community. Though, I will admit that I'm lucky in that I don't see much of this online both because of how picky I tend to be with the blogs I follow, but also because of the nature of my own blog. Many people find safety-pin-punk from my Punk 101 posts that are focused on history and culture, consequently, most of my audience has at least some willingness to learn and has an interest in that topic.

And while generational gaps certainly *do* cause riffs within the punk community, its certainly not something limited to punks, or even alternative communities for that matter. Just look at the stereotypical american family gathering. Nobody is happy because nobody agrees. Best said perhaps by lyrics from both The Ataris and The Living End

I point that out because my opinion on how it should be addressed within the punk community is the same as how it should be addressed in society as a whole. Younger people SHOULD be taking the time to learn their history and know how we got to where we are. Knowing where we started and the fights we've dealt with are important to being able to move even further. On the other side, older people NEED to actively work to challenge their beliefs and acknowledge that its okay for things to evolve and change over time.

The most talked about example of this phenomenon I've seen is the "Nazis aren't punk/where do you think the phrase Nazi punks fuck off comes from?" And I think anyone who is involved in online discourse over this fails to be able to see this argument from the other side. Yes Nazis used to be in punk spaces. But then they were kicked out (Nazi Punks Fuck Off). And now no one wants to let them back (Nazis aren't punk). I genuinely don't understand why people get upset over this. Not every post that talks about what punk has become needs to address its history. Not every post that addresses its history needs to bring up the current state. And people on both ends of any argument like this need to stop thinking they are superior than the other side, and instead start trying to use their brain cells and understand nuance in situations and conversations.

Problem is that most P&J things I have written are in a partial state of completion—but here's the most recent thing I've written that I've wanted to write for a long time but for some reason just didn't until like last night lmao

Pride rolled the offered cigarette between his lips, letting his lack of lungs make up for the fact that he didn’t know what to do with it. The woman slouched back, sighing a cloud of smoke, and carded a hand through her short, electric blue hair. He inspected her a little more, up close and personal with a human he didn’t immediately despise for the first time. Sitting next to her, the blunted tips of spikes on her the shoulders of her jacket came into view. All the colors and odd shapes were patches sewn into the leather. A flag with rainbow stripes sat on top of her shoulder. Another flag on the opposite shoulder had pink, blue, and white stripes. A small white circle on her chest read SHE/THEY in black thread. He scanned the collection of patches he could see—ACAB, read one. NAZI PUNKS FUCK OFF, read another. PROTECT TRANS KIDS, “QUEER” AS IN “FUCK YOU”, symbols with arrows, fists, and a large “A” in a circle. Pride had only the vaguest idea what any of it meant. “What?” she asked, guarded. “Nothing,” Pride replied. He tried to copy her, blowing a cloud of smoke. “I like your jacket.” Whatever she’d been guarding behind her intensity, it melted away. “Thanks. I've seen a lot of posts talking about what Hobie's music taste would be based on his personality/vibes but never anyone talking about it from a comic cannon basis so who better than I, the Spider-Punk reading order guy on twitter, to do that.

I will be going over every time he references a song in comics that I can find, please know I am not a punk rock expert I am simply a leftist comic geek

First off from his introductory comic, it is titled "with great power comes no future"

I believe this is in reference to the sex pistols song No Future (God Save the Queen) This makes sense as the issue is about Hobie killing the fascist president Osborn and the song is very critical of the queen describing the British government as fascist

Going off of that, I’m not sure what on my blog, besides the controversy surrounding this specific post (which again has already been addressed), would ever make you think that I would exclude anyone from the statement of ‘we shouldn't say anyone deserves to die’??? I simply. Do not think humans should be killing other humans. At all. Anywhere. On either side of any war. Like. One human should not be granted the power to decide the lifespan of another in my opinion

On that note, being anti-war is actually both a very punk stance AND a left-wing movement. Though I agree, it is a shallow view of leftism. Because leftism is SO much more than a single movement (like the civil rights movement, the feminist movement, the LGBTQ+ movement, the environmentalism movement, anarchy, socialism, the labor movement, and GOD the list goes on). But also. It *does* include being anti-war and anti-'they deserve to die'.

As far as Punk being anti-war and taking non-violent approaches to the larger socio-political changes in the world, I'd recommend looking into Peace Punk. It was very popular in the 70's and early 80's with bands like Subhumans, Zounds, and The Mob. Here's a great beginner article on it!

As to your point about nazis. I promise you I'm not oblivious to the history behind the phrase 'Nazi Punks Fuck Off'. I also would have hoped that someone would be able to see nuance in a statement that say 'lets not say everyone deserves death' and not read it as 'we should let nazis do what they want'. Because that would be stupid. And if you've interacted with my blog for any real length of time, then you would know that I ALWAYS support punching nazis. But evidently that must have slipped your brain.

I would however say that its kinda a dick move to just assume that others aren't well educated or have developed opinions when you've evidently only looked at a single post on my blog without actually looking at my blog. Otherwise you would have seen the EXTENSIVE amount of research and punk culture that I've written about or collected either on my own or in collaboration with others.
