Thoughts on Angel Crowley & Healing from Trauma

(Minor Good Omens S2 Spoilers)

As someone who’s endured my own Trauma and dealt with the resulting PTSD, watching Crowley’s journey from a joyful, silly, and entirely innocent angel to a withdrawn, lonely, hyper-vigilant demon as a result of the Fall both shattered my heart and confronted me with the fact of myself, and I’d like to talk about it. 

When you* experience Trauma, you experience an existential disorientation and a profound sense of grief over the world you thought you knew–one where you were safe and nothing bad had ever happened to you. “Innocence died screaming,” and all that.

You're also therefore mourning the loss of who you were, and struggling to make sense of who you are now. Which is why this conversation is so gut-wrenching:

“I know you.” “You do not know me.” “I knew the angel you were.” “The angel you knew is not me.” 

This dialogue admittedly still makes my eyes swim. It’s reminiscent of the many conversations I’ve had with people close to me who knew me Before and After. Not only are you grieving the loss of your own innocence, so are those around you, and it feels like you’re wearing their loved one’s face like a mask.

And then underneath the grief, there’s a river of–what you’ll later discover is misplaced–guilt. They want you to be who you were. Fuck, you also want to be who you were -- to not have experienced what you did -- but you can’t.

And when they catch a glimpse of something that reminds them of Before-You -- because it's not like that you has just up and vanished, you've just changed -- they say things like, “I feel like I have you back!” Like the After-You is a consolation prize, something to be tolerated while they wait for the Before-You to return.

It’s not malicious. They love you. They want you to be happy. But it just serves as a reminder of your loss and suddenly you’re acutely aware of how alone you are with the Thing that hurt you.

After trauma, you’re lonely and you're afraid. But those emotions make you feel quite naked, because both of those things would require you to depend on other people to feel better and, at this point, the thought of doing that is far too scary, so to the world, you’re angry. Thus begins the cyclical self-fulfilling prophecy.

And that cycle goes a bit like this: People see the mistrust and the bitterness and the volatility (the shield that keeps people at an arm's length and helps you feel safe). They don't see the profound sustained fear underneath, the desperate need to feel seen and accepted. And so people pull away.

And that real or perceived abandonment feeds the monster that’s taken up permanent residence in your ribcage and screams at all hours that you’re not worthy of love, that you’re irreparably broken, and you’ll always be alone. And you pull away from the people that love you. And the cycle repeats. And you start to believe all of the bad things about yourself that the monster tells you.

Being confronted with a character who you adore and who you also relate to closely is bittersweet in that it’s both immensely painful, but also offers you an opportunity to interrupt that cycle, to explore a different -- perhaps more forgiving -- lens through which to view yourself. To practice self-compassion by proxy, if you will. After all, we tend to extend far greater empathy and forgiveness to others than we do to ourselves.

Angel Crowley, "who squeaked and squealed when he was happy; who flailed his arms around and made explosion noises with his mouth to explain nebulas; who preened when told his stars were pretty,” (joycrispy) reminded me a lot of “Angel T,” or rather myself before Trauma.

And Crowley's story is tragic. I was heartbroken and angry for him; I felt the depth of the betrayal he experienced at the hands of someone he loved who he'd believed loved him; I found myself wanting to protect him, to comfort him. Crowley did not deserve what happened to him.

And, over a decade later, I realized that I’d finally accepted that I’d been an innocent, just like Crowley had, and I didn't deserve what happened to me, either.

And -- if you find yourself relating to this post -- neither did you.

Once we can tell ourselves that and actually believe it, we can start to lower the shield. We can allow people closer, including ourselves. We can bring the parts of ourselves we may have hidden away back to the surface. We can soften again. We can truly start to heal.

Crowley, at his core, remains the same. He is still kind, deeply loving, playful, silly, and – against all odds – hopeful. But his trauma has changed him; his innocence is gone.

He struggles to trust others; fears abandonment; engages in unhealthy coping mechanisms; finds it easier to prioritize and tend to Aziraphale's needs and desires than his own; and has difficulty expressing his emotions.

But he also gained an abundance of empathy, a deep love for humanity, and a strong sense of justice.

We adore Crowley exactly as he is now; we don't wish for him to be who he was before the Fall. And neither does Aziraphale.

In kind, we won’t be who we were — nor should we try to be — but we can be something new, a different version of ourselves that is equally good, equally worthy, and equally deserving of love. 

After over a decade, I think my Trauma wound has mostly healed, as much as Trauma wounds can, anyway; it’s a dull ache rather than an acute pain. Yet Crowley's story assuaged that remaining hurt like a salve I hadn’t realized I needed.

So thank you to @neil-gaiman for giving us such a beautiful story, and to David Tennant, Michael Sheen, and the rest of the cast and crew who bring the characters we love to life on screen.

Good Omens truly is a gift. May it continue to inspire us to offer kindness and love to ourselves and one another. 🖤

Larry is an anthropomorphic sea otter with dark purple-blue fur with splashes of pink and green, like a nebula. He is able to build bridges between subsystems/sidesystems/etc. He does this by going to the headspace location where he wants to build the bridge and rubbing his paws together. A pearl starts forming between his hands and gets larger the more he rolls it around. There is a seam on the pearl that, if he turns the object inside out from there, it turns into a oyster that he can set down on the ground. The oyster then quickly grows large enough for someone to step inside it. If you touch the oyster while it is closed, it will open up, and if you step inside, it will take you to the area Larry set the portal to take you to. Like any sea otter, Larry is silly and playful, and he has a mischievous streak that makes him a little unpredictable at times but never goes into the realm of causing problems. He also enjoys any humor that the system likes and considers himself knowledgeable about comedy, humor, and memes. It is friendly and socially-driven, not so much with strangers but with the system's friend group, which co considers like cos raft (the social group sea otters live in).

The Repentant Brotherhood 12.1: Derwydd Practices - Cylchoedd Rhwymo Binding Circles

Binding circles are runic epitaphs taught to Derwydds of The Brotherhood as Psychic Foci to help them resist and control the ruinous powers they are connected to. These binding circles are sometimes engraved into armour, robes, or weapons as forms of blessings and imbuements, but their most common occurrence is when a Derwydd is activating their warp powers.

The Derwydd will join their fore- and middle fingers and use the digits as a stylus to draw the binding circle in the air before them, summoning a trail of light as ink. This light changes its properties based on the individual, with some light appearing like lightning, fire, nebula, or even an event horizon.

The drawing of Binding Circles is a precise and intense process where the individual must solely focus on exactly the effect they wish to channel from the Immaterium, their illustration reflecting the properties of the effect.

It is commonly observed that Derwydds appear as if in a trance when creating more complex or powerful effects, their hands and fingers creating complex geometric and artistic murals on the fabric of reality; the more complex the Binding Circle, the more physically exhaustive the process is - Derwydds have been recorded to enter comas after creating Binding Circles which have decimated battlefields and levelled structures.

Common shapes seen in Binding Circles are circles, polygons, triangles, lines, and composite shapes. Depending on the technique being utilised, the Binding Circle may be released to activate the technique, or the Binding Circle may have to be ‘held’ by the Derwydd through constantly redrawing the Binding Circle to maintain the effect.

To an outsider, the drawing of a Binding Circle almost looks like the Derwydd is simply connecting preconceived points, which is simply a result of the amount of training and repetition that Derwydds undergo to successfully produce Binding Circles which produce desired effects.

When a Binding Circle fails, the effects can be disastrous. If the Binding Circle is incomplete, its apparition may simply explode proportionally to the power it was going to direct. If the Binding Circle is drawn incorrectly, or the practitioner’s mind wanders from their conceptualisation of the effect being created, the desired effects are altered - summoning of a ball of flame may instead result in an uncontrolled inferno exploding from an unspecified point in space, or an exertion of force may be created in an unpredictable and disproportionate manner. 

When questioned on why the Derwydd Groves of The Brotherhood use this technique as a foci to their Psyker power with how much training it takes and the time it takes to create a Binding Circle in-situ, instead of training in a similar way to other Astartes Librarius or Imperial Psykers, it was said that Binding Circles create a discipline within the soul of a Derwydd which wards from the perils of The Warp; The Binding Circles act as a proxy for the Derwydd to channel The Warp, so not only do they not take on as much of a burden from The Warp, they also are lessened of adverse effects of channelling The Warp, and they are freed to access closer to the full amount of their Psyker potential, rather than lessening their power so much for safety like Librarius and Imperial Psykers do.

Great question!

...I have no clue, so I'm going to do my usual gimmick of pulling nonsense out of the void at the bottom of my decrepit backpack.

One way or another, Starfolk live way longer than humans. In my mind, they sort of do the Elf Thing™ that Tolkein's elves do where they mature and then stay at their prime for a very long time.

The average rise to physical maturity is, in my head, roughly equivalent to humans, even a bit shorter. Then they stay at "prime" for a good long while. Some starfolk species mature quicker, others slower, and different species have different lifespans. Most or all starfolk species live for at least a year (...whatever length of time a year is for them).

Whenever I talk about Starfolk age as in maturity or rough conduct proxy, I'm thinking in terms of human equivalent - aka Khepesh, for all he acts like a crotchety grandpa, is in the equivalent of his late thirties. Aven and Edda land roughly in their mid to late twenties, etc.

Actual, physical, biological age is harder, weirder, and not something I really feel like dealing with. Stars have long lifespans. At any rate, though, they do still have some of that same phenomena of "Oh, you're a few hundred years old? You're practically a baby, when you've been around for three thousand you'll understand!" Idk yet if thousands is the scale I want to work in, but you get the vibe. I may still operate in human equivalent, that does tend to keep pace, although the mental maturity will eventually outpace physical (e.g. someone with the mental maturity of an 80-year-old, but still physically very much a 30-year-old

It also doesn't help that a lot of the "First Starfolk" - those created at the inception of the world - were mostly grown and matured. There were those zapped into existence like so, somewhere around there mental and biological mid-twenties to mid-thirties. Then, of course, there were new ones spat from the nebulas in proper infancy - so the "first generation" sorta has two groups, one that would be a "generation zero" of source, and the "generation one" that grew up from starlethood.

So yeah. TL;DR, starfolk have longer lifespans, but can be talked about in "human-scale analogs" which I will mostly be doing, for sake of communication.

A new solar composition ratio that could reconcile longstanding questions

A Southwest Research Institute-led team combined compositional data of primitive bodies like Kuiper Belt objects, asteroids and comets with new solar data sets to develop a revised solar composition that potentially reconciles spectroscopy and helioseismology measurements for the first time. Helioseismology probes the Sun’s interior by analyzing the waves that travel through it, while spectroscopy reveals the surface composition based on the spectral signature produced by each chemical element.

A paper about this research, which addresses the long-standing “solar abundances” problem, appears in the AAS Astrophysical Journal.

“This is the first time this kind of interdisciplinary analysis has been done, and our broad data set suggests more abundant levels of solar carbon, nitrogen and oxygen than previously thought,” said Dr. Ngoc Truong, an SwRI postdoctoral researcher. “Solar system formation models using the new solar composition successfully reproduce the compositions of large Kuiper Belt objects (KBOs) and carbonaceous chondrite meteorites, in light of the newly returned Ryugu and Bennu asteroid samples from JAXA’s Hayabusa-2 and NASA’s OSIRIS-REx missions.”

To make this discovery, the team combined new measurements of solar neutrinos and data about the solar wind composition from NASA’s Genesis mission, together with the abundance of water found in primitive meteorites that originated in the outer solar system. They also used the densities of large KBOs such as Pluto and its moon Charon, as determined by NASA’s New Horizons mission.

“This work provides testable predictions for future helioseismology, solar neutrino and cosmochemical measurements, including future comet sample return missions,” Truong said. “The solar composition is used to calibrate other stars and understand the composition and formation of solar system objects. These breakthroughs will enhance our understanding of the primordial solar nebula’s chemistry and the formation of numerous solar system bodies.”

The team examined the role of refractory, tar-like organic compounds as a major carrier of carbon in the protosolar nebula. Solar system formation models using measurements of organics from comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko and the most widely adopted solar composition ratios did not produce the dense, rocky Pluto-Charon system.

“With this research, we think we finally understand the mix of chemical elements that made the solar system,” said SwRI’s Dr. Christopher Glein, an expert in planetary geochemistry. “It has more carbon, nitrogen and oxygen than what is currently assumed. This new knowledge gives us a firmer basis for understanding what element abundances in giant planet atmospheres can tell us about the formation of planets. We already have our eyes on Uranus — NASA’s next target destination — and beyond.”

In the search for habitable exoplanets, scientists measure the abundances of elements in stars spectroscopically to infer what a star’s orbiting planets are made of, using stellar composition as a proxy for its planets.

“Our findings will significantly affect our understanding about the formation and evolution of other stars and planetary systems, and even further, they enable a broader perspective of galactic chemical evolution,” said Truong.

A Cornell University-affiliated scientist contributed to the research, which was supported by SwRI’s Internal Research and Development program and the Heising-Simons Foundation.
