So we all know GRRM, like all authors, took a lot of inspo from real life fairy tales, religion, and mythology. There are a ton of parallels but I picked out a few to put in this poll

Propaganda: Before anyone says anything, I know a lot of these are dark spins on the original. I’m not trying to say Littlefinger is a handsome prince or whatever. Also note that some of this is based on either things that haven’t happened yet but are highly likely to happen in Winds/Dream up to and including being confirmed by GRRM.

Arya and Jaqen as Hades and Persephone-the young maiden of spring is found by the lord of the underworld, who gives her an object (in this case a coin) to trick her into being trapped in the world of the dead. When she leaves home, winter comes, but when she returns, so does spring.

Sansa as Rapunzel-a princess locked in a tower by an evil sorceress (or just queen) who is spirited away by a man who wants to marry her. Strong focus on her hair as a symbol of her identity.

The Brotherhood Without Banners as Robin Hood and his Merry Men-a band of outlaws who defend the common people against corrupt authority figures. This one is really self explanatory.

Cersei as the evil queen and Margaery/Sansa/eventually Dany as Snow White-a vain, cruel women terrified of her beauty fading and being replaced by a younger woman who outshines her, so she tries to destroy her perceived rival, ultimately leading to her own downfall. The girls in Snow Whites slot are the popular choices for the identity of the YMBQ and the one Cersei is currently convinced it is.

Jaime and Brienne as Beauty and the Beast-a double subversion. Jaime is handsome and Brienne is ugly, but when they meet she’s brave and kind while he’s selfish and cruel, so it’s the beast who helps the beauty be better.

Lyanna, Rhaegar, and Robert as Helen of Troy, Paris, and Menelaus-a beautiful woman fiercely desired by two powerful men, she either runs off with or is kidnapped by a prince, leading to her (soon to be) husband retaliating by starting a tragic war.

Stannis and Shireen as Agammemon and Iphegenia-a king and commander sacrifices his daughter to the gods to win a war. Bonus if this ends up causing Stannis’ downfall.

Lady Stoneheart as Demeter-a mother wanders the land bringing destruction and misery as she searches for her daughter(s.) When her daughters return to her, spring comes.

Cersei and Jaimes children as the emperor wearing no clothes-the emperor walks around naked insisting that he’s a wearing magic invisible outfit, but everyone is afraid to tell him the truth until finally a child points out that he’s wearing nothing at all. See: everyone pretending not to notice that Cerseis children are the result of incest with her brother, and Ned finally realizing the truth when his 11 year old daughter points out that Joffrey is nothing like Robert.

Bran as the Fisher King-the Fisher King is a character from Arthurian myth. He is the guardian of the magical holy grail, protecting it so it (and power) does not fall into the hands of the unworthy. Notably, he also has a deliberating injury to his legs or groin (depending on the version.) Of course the endgame Bran of the show is a blatant rip-off of Leto II from Children of Dune, but I think the Fisher King sounds more like GRRM would do.

Dany as Moses-a leader who has prophetic visions, who after performing a miracle, frees her people from slavery and leads them on a harsh journey to a new land. Notably regarded as a critically important figure by a monotheistic religion.

I just was asked for advice on writing for Leto Atreides and I thought I’d share it here in case anyone was interested .

[if you watched Game of Thrones] Ned Stark from GoT was modeled identically after Leto Atreides. George RR Martin wrote him as The Leto Character. Dying and everything. Also GoT is essentially the plot of the Dune series, just medieval with magic instead of space and spice.

If you asked Leto who he was he’d first answer that he is an Atreides, and then he’d say he’s a father, and then he’d say he’s a Duke. He is an efficient and creative tactician, but he listens to the voices around him and gives them hierarchical contemplation. He doesn’t tolerate injustices or prey upon the weak. He is loyally loved by his dukedom and fiercely despised by his enemies. If you asked Baron Vladimir what he thinks of Leto he’d say that he’s a goody good and a soft hearted fool. Because he’s jealous of Leto. Jealous that Leto does not seem to experience the corrupt lust for domination, influence, and MONEY that gurgles inside his own body.

Leto would never betray, never go back on his word, and therefore he is justified in clearing out anyone of the sort from his inner circle. He takes duty and honor very seriously and he’d couldn’t live with himself if he had ever failed to ingrain that in Paul as well.

Also, canonical AS FUCK, Leto is apparently a beast in the sack, spoiler alert for book 3-

Leto’s grandkids have the ability to see all the memories of all the generations before them, k? no cap his grandchildren talk with Lady Jessica aka “grandma” how their grandfather served the best cunt in the damn galaxy 😭 and then Jessica herself starts reminiscing, being like, “omg I miss him and the way he used to tear this ass up”

Ok, but I hope you know what you’ve gotten yourself into:

Ned Stark: like I said before #1 dad (I read somewhere that he’s based on Duke Leto, who I also adore for being the best father he can be in his circumstances). But also, I really just love his sense of honor and need to do what’s right, which is so at odds with everyone around him. He just wants to make the people he cares for happy, one of his driving motives to take Robert’s offer as hand of the king. He’s someone who doesn’t want to play the twisted games, who doesn’t want to manipulate and backstab and double cross, and I respect and love him so so much.

Catelyn Stark: do I despise her for the way she treated Jon? Yes absolutely. Do I admire her for her strength and resilience? Yes absolutely. She cares so much for her children, she’d quite literally die for them, she stopped a knife with her bare hands for one of her sons, she crossed a terrible terrain full of giants to bring who she thought tried to kill her son to justice. She loves her family, and she’d do anything for them. I understand her bitterness at the fact that Ned cheated on her, and Jon’s a reminder of that, but I think I’d respect her a tiny bit more if she was able to look past that and care for Jon the way he deserved. Still, she’s a kick ass mom and I love her.

Robb Stark: my sweet boy :( little baby :( I think my attachment to the Stark children stems from the books, where they’re twelve or fourteen or ten and still experiencing the things they went through in the show at twenty or eighteen or fourteen. He’s just a child, and he had so much placed on his shoulders. Just like his father, he only wants to do the right thing. He believes in justice, and that’s the only reason he became King of the North and started a war: for justice for his father. I think he was a great leader, and his only downfall was how trusting and kind he was, to enemies and allies alike, and that’s what really pushed him towards his demise.

Jon Snow: my son, my sweet little guy, I love him so much. I’d literally die for him. I’d kill for him. If he got one thing from Ned, it’s his honor. Honor means everything to Jon, in every situation. The way he felt so fucking upset with himself when he had to keep switching from the Night’s Watch to the Wildlings and then back again. He just wants to do the right thing. He wants to be an honorable leader, which is so difficult to do within that universe. Idk man I just really fucking love Jon Snow (and I refuse to acknowledge whatever the fuck happened with his ‘parents’ in season 8)

Sansa Stark: it took me much longer to warm up to her in the show (at no hate to Sophie Turner, I absolutely adore her), but her arc is one of my favorites. I love the strength she finds within herself, and how she can still find it in herself to be kind. She forgives her siblings, she becomes a leader when all she wanted before was to essentially be a trophy wife. I love watching her reach her potential, watched her fight back and resist in any way she could. I think she and Arya show so well how different resistance can look, how different it can be for people to be strong, and I love her, despite the rocky start to my relationship with her

Arya Stark: my girl! I’ve been rooting for her since day one, I love feral little girls who just want to run wild. I adore the relationship she had with Ned, how he supported her and found her a teacher and really just wanted her to be happy. Honestly, I can’t help feeling proud of her, for all of the things she did at such a young age. She’s a spiteful, revengeful little girl, and I’d do anything to protect her. There’s something about the way she literally never stops fighting, how she keeps trying over and over and over until something works out for her. She’s dealt the worst possible hand in life, and yet she kept fighting, never giving up no matter what happened to her.

Brandon Stark: my least favorite Stark, sorry not sorry. I just think he spent so much time only thinking of himself and only trying to help himself. I know he’s a child and I’m probably being too hard on him, but I honestly just think he’s really annoying

Rickon Stark: I don’t have much to say about him except poor baby :(

leto atreides is basically ned stark who is basically how every suburban dad sees themselves. the only characterization of him that we see is him being bossy and distant with his kid and having boring clothed temple-massage-sex with his kid's mom. women, am i right? but then he bravely gives his life fighting an evil gray blob man, so we all have to be really appreciative and awed by his sacrifice that didnt actually achieve anything. just like the time i yelled at your little league coach. the important take-away is that being a 'good man' means you dont ever talk to your gay kid and youre cool at double sword fighting.

I’ve just realized one thing about “Dune” that I didn't before. The story of House Atreides felt familiar to me in a sense since the beginning and heck, I had no idea why. And then it struck me like a lightning…

House Stark. These two fictional families share a tragedy, which is the sudden and completely unexpected loss of the father of the family. Like, seriously, also Leto Atreides gives me so many vibes of Ned… or maybe I should say, that Ned gives me the vibes of Leto, since “Dune” is older that GoT 😆

Does anyone know whether George R.R. Martin is a fan of Frank Herbert as much as he is a fan of Tolkien?

Hello, Your Grace! Did you watch and/or read Dune? I was not familiar with the story, but went to see the movie today and absolutely loved it! Also, i couldn't help but notice the many similarities between House Atreides and House Stark from ASOIAF, especially the parallels between Duke Leto and Ned Stark. Paul's journey also mirrors in some ways both Jon's and Robb's. Can't wait to see the next one!
