"What's going on is they are gaming the location feature. Streaming platforms allow users to search locally- wealthier neighborhoods mean much higher donations because of the perceived availability of the streamer. Also we just like groups and company- and they co-lab" Naomi Wu

DISØRDINARY BEAUTY 🥀🪞 {Partial Bibliography}
Tumblr media
The main idea of DISØRDINARY BƏAUTY 🥀🪞 came to my mind while reading The Blade Artists by Irvine Welsh. The protagonist of the story, Jim Francis, after a tormented violent life in Scotland (do you remember Begbie from Trainspotting? That's the guy), finds a new life as a successful artist in California where he makes brutalized sculptures and paintings of celebrities.
Who are the new celebrities of our social media generation? Influencers, of course. I have some troubles with the culture of beauty that's also spreading on social media becoming a new standard for social conflicts, self-delusional, and self-harmful behaviors. If I was Jim Francis in The Blade Artists I would brutalize those candy-coated selfies of wealth and health, self-staged success, the monolithic images of social media fame, and the new (artificial) filtered beautiful gods that our society probably never really needed. My glitches are my blades, let's slice those selfies until completely unrecognizable. Turn algorithmically accepted perfect selfies, the temple of beauty, into hauntingly beautiful anonymous portraits, the redemption of the creeps. This firestarter is DISØRDINARY BEAUTY 🥀🪞.
Of course, embracing a journey into the realm of beauty and ugliness is a very complex ground to explore. I needed some notions to investigate and navigate this field and I found my resources in Umberto Eco. I read various notes on the topic, then I read his On Ugliness. This became an essential reading to understand more the semiotic of "ugliness" through history, art and literature, and society. Eco brilliantly provides enough arguments and references to better understand the cultural and political value of ugliness and beauty in society. This book inspired me to expand the project beyond human relations to physical beauty and its complexities and start observing beauty in art and how it is perceived and depicted in art. I decided to deploy the art of glitches also to alter art canons and digital art standards (making the work of art + viewing the work of art). The matter of "ugliness" is way more critical than the one of beauty (I will read Eco's On Beauty soon or later too), so I bought The Aesthetics of Ugliness by Karl Rosenkranz, to see how the aesthetics of what's considered ugly has evolved to our days where a more classical relationship to ugliness and beauty has evolved into a more "abnormal" new sense of beauty (algorithms, filters, masks, plastic surgery, etc.) and ugly (weird, memes, amateurs, etc.), and the new aesthetics of Artificial Intelligence which is having a massive impact in the way we imagine/make art and the way we see ourselves through AI-powered technologies and applications. My friend Prof. Massimo Franceschet (hex6c) told me to look for The Creativity Code by Marcus Du Sautoy. I am now reading Rosenkranz and Du Sautoy, and these two will shortly be joined by After Beauty by Spike Magazine, an issue I just received delivery today, and I hope to tell you more about it soon.

michaela mabinty deprince (1995-2024)
🩰˚✧₊⁎
today, september 13th, 2024, the ballet world lost an extraordinary dancer and woman.
michaela mabinty deprince was born on january 6th, 1995, as mabinty bangura, in sierra-leone. she was orphaned, her parents passing to due to both direct and indirect causes of the civil war in her home country. she was demonized by her caretakers for her vitiligo, being called a “devil’s child”, and suffering from other forms of neglect and abuse. in 1999, deprince was adopted by an american couple along with another girl, and they were taken to new jersey, united states of america.
her hopes of becoming a ballerina had been planted when she found a ballerina on a magazine cover in her home country. she didn’t know of ballet at the time, but treasured the picture and dreamed of dancing. this dream blossomed into truth when she moved to the states, being put into ballet lessons soon after her arrival. deprince was a four-time participant in youth america grand prix, one of the largest ballet competitions in the united states. she was awarded a scholarship to study at the jaqueline kennedy onassis school of ballet, the associate school of american ballet theatre.
despite facing racial discrimination and other hardships in and out of the industry, deprince persisted in her dream of becoming a professional ballet dancer. in 2012, at the age of 16, she became the youngest member of dance theatre of harlem, and the next year, she joined the junior company of the dutch national ballet. she soon rose through the ranks, joining the main company and attaining the rank of soloist. she was the first dancer of african origin to ever join the company, and a shining advocate and role model for black women in ballet.
her other accomplishments include being an ambassador for war child holland, a dutch organization working to improve the wellbeing and resilience of children directly affected by war. she visited uganda and lebanon through the organization. she also appeared in beyoncé’s 2016 music video for ‘freedom’.
she will dance among all the stars in the sky. rest in peace beautiful michaela mabinty, you are already so missed. ♡
