doodle dump!!!!! theres a lot of stuff in here, ranging back abouuuut a month and a half! putting explanations for all of these under the cut <3
1 - sort of a color study of a Forces screenshot cuz i thought the lighting was cool, but also its for a friends rewrite of the game!
2 - idk, i just wanted to draw hipster sonic from Boom except with modern sonic :P
3 - a silly concept for Prime! i have a headcanon that, after Sonic left the shatterverse, it sorta "reset" and repaired itself, and because of that it gained back the people it lost when it was originally shattered, aka Sonic and Shadow were brought into those timelines! the guy i drew here is named Breeze and hes from New Yoke -- Nine calls him Breezy :)
4 - a sorta-redraw of a screenshot from Boom. i just wanted to draw the bros hugging <3
5, 6, 7 - redraws of panels im particularly fond of from Scrapnik Island!
8 - ive been watching Sonic X and i absolutely fell in love with that little guy Bokkun so! i made a redesign of him if he was canon <3
9 - Surge in Android 18's outfit!
10 - triple s hand ideas <3 might make more of em with other characters
11, 12 - concepts of what i think Silver and Blaze looked like when they were kids!
13 - unfinished idea of what Silver's room would look like
14 - a Sonic OVA screenshot redraw
15 - ideas for modern Mighty and Ray! theyve got matching bows hehe <3
16 - Chris Thorndyke redesign, specifically with idw in mind! i have some more concepts of him with a special wispon for crimson wisps. oh, and his wisps name is Ava!
17 - ive seen people draw Terios and Feels together, but Feels transitioned to Mika!!!! anyways, i just think those two could be a cute duo, sorta with a quiet older brother and peppy younger sister vibe hehe
if anyone has any questions about any of these, feel free to shoot me an ask!!

my thoughts on dbh as someone entering the fandom in 2024
so just got into the dbh fandom like in aug 2024. i have watched too much gameplay, read the wiki extensively, read an obscene amount of fanfics on ao3, and am in the process of writing my own. here are some of my thoughts (that no one has asked for):
every fanfic writer who started in 2018 and is still updating their works in 2024 are literal saints and some of the best damn writers i ever did saw and the dedication is fucking unreal. one fic had almost 2 million words??????? like BRUH. some are still ongoing and updated this year?? the dbh fandom in ao3 is not thriving as much as it was in 2018 (i say this purely as someone who's looking at the hits/kudos/comment ratios on older v. new works) but they are still alive!!!!
i am puzzled with the obsession with gavin reed. there are like a million fics that feature him and rk900. i am confused bc he did not seem like a redeeming character at all in my opinion and idk, i think he's just an asshole. i like the redemption arcs some ppl write for him but i just can't with him. i mean you ship who you wanna ship but i am not a reed fan and i am confused how he became so popular when all he did was bully our poor boi connor.
i personally don't ship hank x connor bc they give strong father-son vibes in the canon. however, i am obsessed with how jolli_bean writes the pairing on ao3 since its usually a canon divergence or an AU so the pair meet later in life. there are some fics that follow the canon and do a pretty good job with the pairing, but i just tend to keep it familial between them in my head. (but like i said, ship who you want to ship)
i am glad there's a vague consensus that we all wished alice stayed a human bc i feel like that lends itself to a more interesting narrative post-game. tho i guess her being an android is fine bc now kara, luthor, and alice can live as one happy family in canada forvever lol
i am literally obsessed with bryan dechart's acting as connor. like if you haven't seen him play connor in real life for the interactive #detroit2038 premiere event, then you gotta watch some of the live stream. like he doesn't break character the whole time and his physicality just screams connor and i just really appreciate how much effort he put in as an actor to really embody the character. just so impressive and i wish there was more bts of him acting as connor bc its just so nuanced and ugh *chef's kiss* if they ever made a live action dbh it would be impossible for anyone else to play connor
i love the 28 stab wounds meme. when i watched that scene for the first time it was so jarring lmao
i also love how everyone is like yes, we all know connor likes dogs but he also likes fish bc of that one fish you can save in the very first minute of gameplay hahahah. (his name is dewey and it is vitally important you save him). i also appreciate how the "i like dogs" line will undoubtedly find it's way into every fic possible lol
i think the love for simon is very good and well and amazing but i think josh deserves more love in fics too
it bothers me that when north tells markus "i love you" at the church, MARKUS DOESN'T SAY IT BACK??? LIKE BITCH SAY YOU LOVE HER BACK DAMMIT DON'T JUST WALK AWAY
i love how the fandom just latched onto rk900 and rk800-60 and fleshed out their personalities and i love reading ppl's interpretation of these characters and how they incorporate them into their stories. it's funny they only show up like one time and ppl just ran with it and it's so fun and creative and i love it.
i love the hc that chloe deviated when connor chose not to shoot her. that's the best hc. like it's canon in my heart idc
bless all the fic writers who have mastered the art of explaining how androids mind and bodies work bc there are so many gaps and possibilities left open in the lore and it's incredible to see what ppl come up with or interpret based off the canon. (i still feel 50/50 about when they make deviants feel pain cause like androids not feeling pain is such a big part of the canon and yeah i'll give it a pass if the fic does it for the whumps and the angst but i prefer when a fic finds a canon-compliant reason for deviants to feel pain, even if its just like they got a chip or software installed that makes them feel pain or something)
every pairing that i find in this fandom, i tend to be like... "yeah i can see that." (with the exception of hank x connor for reasons i stated in #3). i'm still like ehhh on reed900 or even gavin x connor bc i just don't think it makes sense in the canon but if it's written well i just shrug and say yeah i guess i could see that. some rarepairs i ended up absolutely adoring were chloe x north and rk900 x north (i realize they're both north but she has such good potential for character dynamics)
idk if it's just me bc i specifically look for fics centered around connor, but i feel like there's not a lot of love for kara at least fic-wise. ig it's cause she kinda just leaves so it's easy to not include her. tbh, i am quite well-versed in markus' and connor's stories but i haven't really explored a lot of kara's. i plan on playing dbh with my partner when i see them again in a couple months and i wanted us to take turn playing different characters and i wanted to play kara's storyline so i've been avoiding it for the most part so i can be surprised with my options. plus, in my wip fic, kara is in canada so she's not really relevant to my story which is why i have in depth knowledge about markus and connor and less on kara.
the music in this game fucking SLAPS. 10/10 kara's theme makes me wanna cry.
okay, there is a common trope in the dbh fanfics where connor loses his memory and that shit gets me everytime. i'm always bawling and anxiously waiting for him to fucking REMEMBER and i hate and love it and eat it up every. single. time. usually, the memory loss happens early in the fic and it's pretty expected but sometimes i get blindsided and i'm like FUCK not this shit again but i can't stop reading it and the angst is so palpable.
i think it's so interesting how ra9 is just like this mystery in the lore that never gets entirely explained in the game. it's like something you can totally kinda ignore but it does have interesting lore implications if you decide to really think about it.
i adore all the characters in dbh equally except for connor who is the certified best boi and my absolute favorite (no one is shocked by this declaration). and the characters on my shit list are zlatko, todd, and sometimes reed.
this is an obnoxiously long post and i apologies. i haven't been on tumblr in years and i just had so many thoughts about dbh and i have no friends to talk to so i decided to dump it all here. i still have more thoughts but those are the ones that come to the forefront of my mind.
tldr: i love dbh and its fandom and i have many specific thoughts about it and you should just really read my post if you care about any of it

Laser Tag
Tumblr media
HELLOOO
I have so many ideas and so little motivation LOL but im here with a cute story
premise: you do laser tag with your kickass android boyfriends
Warnings: CUTE, fake violence, cursing maybe, bullying of tween boys mayhaps, but its because they were rude, name calling, kissing, you shoot people with lasers so a lot of that language, spelling errors probably, slice of life
Connor, Nines and Sixty x reader
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Were really doing this" Nines sighed out, shutting the car door with a harsh click.
"Yes indeed" you spoke up, excitedly jumping out of the vehicle and giving a smiling Connor a small thank you for holding the door open. "You agreed to itttt" you sung out, bumping into the tall android, who rolled his eyes with a smirk tugging on his lips.
"Its gonna be fun" Sixty called as he came up behind you, clapping Nines on the back, which sent the surprised droid forward a few steps. Nines looked up and sent a death glare in the smug androids direction, who just shrugged and put his hands in his coat pockets.
Your group was currently in a damp parking lot downtown, under a rainy sky, making your way to the thrilling new date idea you had come up with recently.
Laser Tag
"I have been increasingly interested in this activity ever since you brought it up a 2 weeks ago my dear" Connor turned to you as he spoke, gently taking your hand in his and continuing on, not noticing how the action made your ears and cheeks red. You chuckled in acknowledgement to his comment and nuzzled deeper into your big puffy jacket (that you totally had stolen from Nines, not that he minded) and your group continued on to the main building.
Walking in, you noticed the whole building was themed like a medieval castle. It had tall spires and walls made to look like an old brick structure, and there were decorations of large colored flags, along with laser tag posters.
"This is impressive for a children's play place." Nines announced, also eying the interesting architecture. You smiled at his words, and continued on to the front desk, with Connor trailing right beside you. You appreciated him coming with you, he always did ever since you confessed that you weren't exactly the best in social situations. You got really nervous and choked up, which made everything awkward. He was very kind and understanding when he heard this, vowing to help you when he could.
You put on your nicest tone and greeted the employee. He stopped typing, and deeply sighed before addressing you.
"Welcome to the Zap Zone, how can I help you." he drawled, eyeing you and Connor with a wary look. He paused upon noticing Connors LED, which was peeking out from under his beanie, before looking down and seeing your held hands. The man looked back at the pair of you with a raised brow.
You pretended not to notice the employee's judgmental look, but it did give you pause. Your thoughts started to psych you out, before you felt a supportive squeeze to your hand in an attempt to calm you. Your emotional support Connor was reminding you that he was there to help. You cleared your throat before continuing.
"We have reservations for 4 people and 1 game? It should be under the name "Connor Anderson" rocking back and forth, you watched the man expectantly as he started typing on his computer. He then clicked on something, before reaching under his desk and bringing out a hand full of colored cards.
"You guys will play in the purple game. It starts in 10 minutes, and lasts 30" he explained, handing you the cards. "Did you sign the wavier online?" you nodded and he seemed to let out a relieved breath, grumbling something about the forms taking forever.
With the interaction coming to an end, you and Connor turned away from the desk, and you handed him his card. He slid it into his pocket, and pecked your forehead with a smooch as he did so. You giggled at the ticklish kiss, and noticed Sixty and Nines walking up to you two.
"We found lockers, you can put your bag in there. But watch out, there's some tweens stalking the area" Sixty explained scrunching up his nose before turning around to look behind his back and towards an arched doorway.
"Copy that" you winked, before stuffing some items into your bag and organizing the contents inside. You heard a scoff as you felt someone look over your shoulder and into your bag. You quickly shut it, before turning around to face a certain android.
"Its so unorganized" Nines sighed out, rolling his eyes as you playfully gasped, holding a hand to your chest. "I have a system!" you laughed out, shoving his shoulder while he smirked.
You walked past a giggling Sixty on your way to the locker, giving him a quick shove too. You started into a breathless jog when you heard him shout "hey!" but you were already gone and laughing,
After putting your stuff in a locker, and seemingly avoiding the teen boys, you came back to the main area and saw your boys sitting on a couch in the corner. They were conversing amongst themselves, before stopping when they saw your approach.
"Whatcha guys talking about?" you sighed out, plopping down on the old couch beside Sixty, who wrapped an arm around your shoulder the second you were settled.
"Game plans. I think we should go for the high ground" Connor grinned, looking like he was enjoying making up the plan. You nodded your head at the idea, looking up to the celling and squinting your eyes, trying to think of a strategy also.
The speakers suddenly blared through out the building, and you jumped in Sixty's hold. He rubbed your shoulder as you settled down, and you felt a little embarrassed for getting startled so easily. He just chuckled.
"Purple group, you start in 4 minutes, come to the counter to register code names" the tired employee from before spoke into the speaker, before it clicked off with another loud beep.
"Codenames?" Nines questioned, getting up from the couch and adjusting his clothes. You bounced out of Sixty's grip and stood up, basically vibrating from how excited you were.
"Codenames! You get to choose a cool name for yourself." you explained, before walking with the group to stand in line to register.
"Ill just be Nines, or RK900" Nines annouced, rolling his shoulders.
"Are you cosplaying as a boring person?" you frowned, punching his arm lightly. "You have to be something fun! Like....." you put your head down in concentration trying to think of names for Nines.
And then it dawned on you.
The perfect name
When you finally got to the counter, you were giggling and could barely speak. Connor went first.
"Ill be RoboCop" he announced, looking at you in approval. You laughed and gave him a thumbs up, and he beamed at you.
"Ill be 69" Sixty said, smiling at the employee, who gave him a dead stare before typing into the computer without looking.
"Im....." Nines looked at you with questioning eyes, and you gently whispered to him the name you thought up, before turning back to the employee.
"Terminator" Nines said simply, looking down to adjust his tie as he spoke.
The employee finally looked to you and you said confidently and loudly for everyone to hear, "beep boop"
The employee looked at you for a second before whispering a long "okay" and typing your name in.
You looked at the boys, who seemed very unimpressed.
"It took you 5 minutes for "beep boop" Sixty questioned, crossing his arms over his chest and giving you a playful glare.
"Okay mister 69" you laughed out, shoving the android while he laughed with you.
Soon you were all being led into a dark room, with instructions and rules being read to you by a more expressive employee. You found out that if you got shot you wouldn't be permanently out, you just lost points. And you earned points for lasering someone. While you were listening, you turned to watch the boys all focused intently on the speaker, and you could see their LEDS changing color in the dark.
Eventually, you were walking down a flight of stairs and into a room that smelt like sweaty people. You found your pack, which was a vest with lights on the shoulder and chest, and slipped it on with Connor helping you clip it into place.
And then it begun.
You had 5 minutes to find a hiding place, and then the game started.
The droids had all promised that they wouldn't use their special abilities for this game, so you were all going in blind.
And it was a trip.
The space was a huge arena with hundreds of walls. There were mirrors on basically every surface, and thick smoke was rolling in, giving everything a hazy appearance and making it hard to see.
"Guys go right!" You heard Sixty yell from behind. Your group shuffled to the right, until you stumbled upon a staircase. You called for the group, and you all eventually found the top of the arena.
"Keep low" Connor whispered, crouching on your right. You said a quiet conformation, before your pack started to audibly count down, signaling the game would start soon. You turned to see Sixty blocking the entrance of the top area, acting like a guard, and Nines settled in on your left.
Finally, the pack finished the count down.
And you were off.
The boys from before instantly started screaming from below, and you looked to see them running in the maze.
And you unleashed hell.
You all fired from above, and the boys screamed louder as the continually got hit by your party. You broke into giggles when they retreated, and reached for a double high five with Connor and Nines. Nines just stared at your hand, and Connor actually high fived you.
A half-win.
You stayed up in the canopy for a good 10 minutes, maintaining your position. You got shot a couple times from below, but you were trying not to worry about the points. You were doing pretty good!
Until the tweens banned together.
You heard Sixty yell something, and you turned just in time to see him get shot a couple times. He groaned as he watched his points go down on the screen of his pack.
You let out a small scream-gasp thing and turned to run for the other exit on the level just as an army of 12-year old's stormed in.
You went down a few levels of the arena before you realized something.
You were not being followed.
Now you were totally alone, with no idea where your boybots had gone.
With no way of finding the boys currently, you wandered around a bit. Soon you were lost in the hazy maze of smoke and neon, occasionally shooting someone.
No sign of your team.
Until you heard someone yelling.
"BEEP BOOP WHERE ARE YOU"
You wheezed so hard and unexpectedly, gripping your stomach, and folding over yourself in a fit of giggles. You heard feet thundering in your direction, and someone tapped your shoulder making you look up and see Sixty breathlessly gazing at you. He nodded his head to a secluded corner, and you gave him a thumbs up while trying to calm yourself.
As you rounded it, you witnessed something great.
Nines was lying on the ground, a level below you and Sixty, firing at some tween boys. His face was fully serious, like he was on a personal mission. When the group started to run he got up, standing at his full height, and broke into a sprint after them as they screamed in terror.
"He said he'll meet us over there" Sixty leaned over and pointed to the opposite side of the arena, towards one of the spires.
"I don't know if he will, he seemed to be fully concentrated in his mission down there." You giggled, looking up at the android. You (accidently) took notice of his cute, messy hair and saw his mechanical body was breathing hard.
You looked down slightly at his lips, just out of curiosity, and they curved into a smirk as he noticed what you were doing.
"Are you guys seriously going to make-out in a family friendly laser tag establishment?" a voice cut in.
You playfully shoved Sixty away while he grumbled in disappointment, and you turned to face an unimpressed Connor.
"Nuh-uh" was all that came from you. You crossed you arms to add an emphasize on your words, but that just made Connor smile fondly.
"Sure"
So now you, Connor and Sixty were running through the arena, ducking behind walls and using the thick smoke to your advantage.
When you got to the spire, there was still no sign of Nines, and only 10 minutes left in the game.
So you all went solo.
Your remaining boyfriends came up with a codeword to use if anyone was in danger, and to make sure you didn't accidently shoot each other.
It was something very meaningful, poetic, and totally encapsulated your experience.
"pineapple"
And so, it was decided.
The plan was to find Nines, and regroup in the same spot after 3 minutes.
So you all split up once again.
As you were roaming the area, you heard the tween boys once again.
So following the voices, you found who you were looking for.
He was lying on the ground once again in a sniper position, shooting at the group.
You went up and lied down next to him, kissing his cheek. The android rumbled and turned to look at you.
"Why are you harrassing a group of children?" you asked, chuckling a little to yourself.
"They called me and Sixty "idiots" earlier" he spoke, stopping to look at you with a smirk. "They also called you a bimbo when they thought we were far away enough" he whispered, kissing your forehead.
"Ohhhhh, continue blasting then" was all you said, looking down at the boys as they yelled "gross" to you and Nines. Smirking, you nodded your head to the boys.
He smiled.
And grabbed the back of your head, pulling you in for a deep, over- exaggerated kiss.
You heard the voices grow louder from below, with the boys yelling in disgust at your smackeroo.
Parting for air, you both broke out in quiet laughter.
Finally you guys got up and wiped the grime of the floor from your clothes, Nines proceeding to say he needed to change when you got home.
Making your way back to the designated meeting place, you found Sixty and Connor fighting off some fellow adults who were also enjoying the childlike wonder of laser tag.
You yelled out a battle cry, screaming "PINEAPPLE" and joined the fight, ducking behind a wall to strike from slightly above. Overwhelming the pair, who pulled away in the end.
When you were in the clear, you turned to the androids, smiling and proudly pointing in Nines direction
"Found him"
Then the lights on all your packs went off, and that meant the game was over. You made to high five everyone, which surprisingly everyone accepted, and your group shuffled to the exit.
Outside the arena, the light from outside was like a flash bang. You winced and covered your eyes, groaning in pain.
"Aww toughn up" Sixty punched your arm, making you deliver him a dirty look.
Finally, it was time to see the scores.
"In first place.......Terminator" you read out, gasping as you turned to Nines. He just smirked and adjusted his tie, slightly glancing at the group of kids staring at him with anger.
In the end, Connor got in 3rd, Sixty got 4th, and you got.....
17th
but you had fun!
You all left in good spirits, with you regaling Connor and Sixty of what happened while you were looking for Nines.
A good day you think

The pool noodle flotilla launches in two weeks! More information here.
For our purposes, a “pool noodle” is a relationship tag that comes up with less than 30 hits on Ao3. Platonic (&) relationships count! Any and all crossover pairings with under 30 existing fics are welcome.
Tumblr media
Our first theme is "the big three: aliens, androids archers, and (tech) wizards." Hackers, Paleolithic weapons, interplanetary romance, etc.
Prompts for new fic:
Robin Hood AU
Mia Dearden & Kate Bishop
Eddie and Venom work at the Daily Planet
Tony and Roy in rehab
Venom finds a new host
Kree identity shenanigans

ULTRA BEAUTY
Now on Netflix:
Tumblr media
Ultraman: Rising--The very name Ultraman is a madeleine for me, evoking powerful childhood memories, often thrilling, just as often frustrating. As a kid in rural northwestern Pennsylvania in the early '70s, I used to try to tune in UHF Channel 29 from Buffalo, New York, on weekday afternoons to see reruns of the late '60s Japanese TV series about the solar-powered superhero who battled all manner of bizarre kaiju threatening humanity.
When the weather was clear, especially in the summer, I would often have a good signal, and I'd get a clear picture of the weird psychedelic paint swirls out of which the show's opening title would take shape. When the weather was lousy or wintry, I'd usually get nothing but snow, and great would be my indignant disappointment.
In the early iteration of the show that I loved (1966-67), created by Godzilla special effects master Eiji Tsuburaya, Ultraman was the alter-ego of Clark Kent-esque Hayata, an intrepid member of the "Science Patrol." This agency was tasked with animal control duties on the myriad massive monsters that regularly inconvenience Japanese society and threaten its infrastructure. When the situation became sufficiently desperate, Hayata would excuse himself and press a button on the "Beta Capsule" he carried, thus transforming himself into the sleek android giant, who would then fight the creature in question with a combination of martial arts and a variety of rays he could shoot from different parts of his body.
Ultraman's might was short-lived, however. Very early in the fight, a small warning light in the center of his chest would begin to flash, and the narrator, in the English-dubbed versions I saw, would gravely intone (if memory serves): "The energy which Ultraman draws from the sun diminishes rapidly in Earth's atmosphere. The warning light begins to blink. If it stops blinking before he returns to the sun, Ultraman will never rise again!" Or something like that. It seemed pretty urgent, every episode.
The franchise has continued in Japan throughout the decades, over dozens of series with differing characters, as well as movies, comics, video games etc. I never followed any of them. This animated feature from Netflix, however, is of American origin, though it's set in Japan and is an unmistakably loving homage. Directed by Shannon Tindle from a script he wrote with Marc Haimes, this one gives The Big U a new alter-ego, a handsome baseball star named Sato, who is estranged from his father, a scientist who once had the Ultraman secret identity gig.
Early on, a winged monster's baby imprints on Sato/Ultraman (voiced by Christopher Sean) and regards him as his parent. The story involves our hero's efforts, aided by a flying robotic sphere (Tamlyn Tomita) to protect the baby from the schemes of the kaiju-hating Dr. Onda (Keone Young), and also to mend his relationship with his Dad (Gedde Watanabe).
The old show was deeply silly but visually elegant; this new feature is visually elegant but balances the silliness with a sincere attempt at solid characterizations and relationships. It's an entertaining movie, but it does have a large downside, at least for me: I found the baby kaiju grotesquely cutesy; it looks like a mutant human baby in a tacky Halloween costume. It's like an Anne Geddes photo gone nightmarish.
In general, I could have done with more full-grown kaiju action. But the finale of Ultraman: Rising is fairly spectacular, and there's a lot to like in this movie. I would welcome future installments in this series. I particularly like the idea of an Ultraman who treats kaiju as humanely as possible. Or, rather, ultra-humanely.

Can I get a Platonic Yandere! Hank Anderson (D:BH) with Rookie! Gender-Neutral! Reader? They’re a interesting little shit with shitty puns, but he doesn’t rlly like the fact that they’re constantly getting reckless out there in the field. Besides, they’re probably one of very few who can keep Gavin in line.
Sure! I'd love to write for Hank :) I apologize if something is off, I tried to make him as in character as I could!
Yandere! Platonic! Hank Anderson with Rookie! Darling
(Reckless! Jokester! Darling)
Pairing: Platonic
Possible Trigger Warnings: Gender-Neutral Darling, Hank is kinda like a father to you, Overprotective behavior, Mentioned violence/threats, Manipulation, Suicidal thoughts mention (Canon to Hank in the game), Swearing, Murder/Killing.
Tumblr media
I have a feeling Hank is going to start off annoyed with you due to how you act.
Not only are you a rookie and new to how this whole police force thing works in the wild...
You also have a personality that's a bit hard to get used to upon your first meeting.
Hank is relatively serious and gruff, he doesn't tolerate people not doing their job too much (just means more work).
There's a good chance it'll take time for him to get used to you.
First there's the jokes you throw around at the station.
Hank feels they are a bit poor taste and annoying at first.
You try to make them around him and he tries his best to tolerate them.
He gets it, you're young and new, but get with the program.
Although, Hank prefers your humor compared to you being an emotionless drone.
In fact your humor may just grow on him the longer he knows you.
Hank will take time to fully accept you, just like how he was with Connor.
You'd also soon become one of the reasons he hasn't wanted to end it all over time.
Hank would take a fatherly role towards a rookie platonic obsession.
He's lost his son a long time ago and part of him wants to take care of you like the child he lost.
His attachment starts to grow when he sees you keep Gavin in line at times in the station.
When Gavin gets out of hand you jump at the chance to shut him down.
Hank respects that, he's an annoying prick at times.
Another way you can grow close is if you work under him.
After all, you need experience one way or another, right?
I can see Hank being very fatherly towards you over time regardless on how he meets his platonic obsession.
He doesn't notice it half the time, it just happens on his own.
He may find the fact you're a rookie annoying, but your humor sometimes even makes him laugh.
His biggest issue with you is your reckless behavior, however.
Not only is being a rookie reckless enough, somehow you're even more reckless than that?
It often requires Hank to keep an eye on you in case a suspect you're searching for is armed.
I can see Hank killing to keep his darling safe.
Since he is like a father to you he doesn't kill out of jealousy.
He fears he'll lose you like his son and kills if it means you're safe.
Hank sticks by you on chases and investigations.
If an android or human makes a move to harm you, Hank shoots them fast.
Blood could spill over his clothes and he doesn't care.
Hell, the suspect/threat could've been needed for an investigation, but he just cares that you weren't hurt.
Hank would scold you and your reckless behavior a lot at times.
It sounds mean-spirited yet it actually means he cares for you a lot.
It would take time although Hank could be affectionate.
As just a rookie he may be more casual, an arm around the shoulders or a pat on the back for example.
If he sees you more like the child he never had, you may even get a hug.
Hugs with Hank usually happen when his mental state... isn't in the best place.
You have to remember that Hank has a self destructive past.
He's used to drowning himself in alcohol and being rather pessimistic.
His fatherly role towards you (and Connor) keeps him going.
Hank isn't usually very affectionate unless he's vulnerable.
So when he's like that you can see him show some of his obsession.
Honestly your jokes go from relieving to comforting.
They're so uniquely you.
As with most platonic yanderes his most destructive trait is his overprotective behavior.
His trigger finger towards suspects around you costs you cases at times.
Hank isn't brutal with those he kills, it's not in his character.
He will make it quick and over with, maybe with a few more shots to be sure.
You may say it's overkill... but he's doing it to relieve his stress.
It actually feels a little good to do, too... all for you.
He isn't actually that bad though he can manipulate you due to his experience and rank.
Hank could easily control what you do due to the job.
I feel platonic yandere Hank would sort of "adopt" rookie darling in this situation.
You may not know it but he begins to see you more like his kid than just a rookie.
He can't imagine his life without you.
If anyone tried to take you away from him, two things could happen.
He snaps, hunts you down, and takes you back gun in hand.
... or he goes into a deep depression and things just get worse.
You become the person holding Hank together.
Even if you want to quit your job, Hank is around to look after you.
Even if you want to separate from Hank, you feel guilty due to his self destructive behavior
Hank has as much control over you as you do him (emotionally).
Hank's no longer just your superior...
He'll show you he can be much more for you, even if he has to bend some rules and paint some walls in blood to keep you both happy.
"Come on, Rookie. They were going to hurt you! I had to shoot them, it's what you do on the job. You have to make a move before they do...."

HEAR ME OUT
I like a reverse AU as much as the next person but the way it gets done sometimes is so out of character so I'm gonna just throw my two cents out into the void for anyone to draw inspiration from because I don't have the motivation to write it myself right now!
So, starting with the ones that get reversed a lot: Hank and Connor
Connor is obviously younger than Hank, so make him a newly assigned lieutenant who is trying to live up to his position of power. Being Connor, he's unsure, he questions himself a bit, he's scared of messing up as someone with power over others. Portraying him with Hank's personality just doesn't fit if you ask me, Connor's not that guy.
Now, due to Connor being a great but still new Lieutenant, who better for Fowler (or maybe Amanda if you want to get deep in a reverse AU) to partner him with than an Android that's basically perfect. which is not to say he should be optimistic and cheery as he is in some depictions. He can still be a stone-cold bitch or a sarcastic prick but less in the vein of "I hate everyone around me" and more in the "You're a bitch, you don't deserve my kindness" sort of way. AND HE CAN HAVE THIS ATTITUDE WITH HANK TO BEGIN WITH BUT I HONESTLY THINK HE'D BE MORE INTIGUED BY ANDROIDS AS MYSTERYS THEN GENUINELY HATE THEM, YOU CAN PRY THAT IDEA FROM MY COLD DEAD HANDS.
I'd also like to make a point that, whether Cole is a character in the story (as a brother or a kid from a case) who is present to make Connor sad, HE *CLAP* CAN *CLAP* STILL *CLAP* REACT *CLAP* LIKE *CLAP* CONNOR. He doesn't have to become Hank's mirror image after Cole's death, he can grieve in his own way. And even if you do chose to make him take the same route, he doesn't have to act like Hank when he's sober! (this is coming from a place of frustration that Connor just... wouldn't be cold towards everyone for no reason and it annoys me that he is in some fics)
Hank as an Android would be gruff and straight to the point because he is a "machine." He's designed to be no-nonsense, straight to the point and probably annoyed by Connor's persistent Empathy (similar to how Connor can be during some playthrough's of the game). The absolute key to this portrayal would be emphasising that Hank acts like this because he is programmed to. Cyberlife has to have a reason for making Hank the way he would be so please, jump on the nuance of why Hank would be such a sullen, apathetic android and the implications that has for him to achieve deviancy. He's not meant to be nice to the people he works for, he's meant to do a job.
Now for the icing, how does this reverse dynamic work in context of the plot?
Connor needs someone steady and secure to fall back on lest he succumb to the pressures of the position he's in. Hank's blunt, maybe sometimes rude way of getting to the point is exactly what Connor would need to stay afloat. He needs someone who can be tough and give it to him straight when he's doubting himself. In regards to their cases, yes, he has a very "Hank" way of responding to the android actions (i.e. shooting Chloe, Hunting down the Traci's) in that he takes an empathetic approach towards the Andorids but less from a "they look human and it's disturbing" standpoint and more from a "deviants are alive" standpoint from the get go. He shows empathy towards the Traci that was killed in the Eden club, he tries to understand why deviancy is occurring, he defends Hank against anti-android people.
(And please feel free to fight me on that point, I've seen one playthrough and have a general idea of Hank's reactions to deviancy based on fanfic and whatnot. I'm not an expert on how Hank reacts and I want input)
And here's my favourite part, Hank deviating with Connor's help. It is Connor's humanity and empathy that really intrigues me on this part. When people portray him with Hank's characteristics, he comes off really angry and Hank deviates from a position of "I care about this kid, I have to look after him." And while this is *chef's kiss* it's not the only possible way for Connor to influence his deviancy. His general kindness to people around him, his resilience, his empathy, his humanity can influence how Hank starts seeing the world around him. (I guess that it just really bugs me that Hank only seems to really deviate for Connor when there are so many more facets that can make Hank the purveyor of his own deviance, with Connor giving him the nudge)
Just like in canon where Android Connor helps Human Hank find purpose in his life again, Human Connor can help Android Hank realise he is more than a machine, that he's alive.
In conclusion, stop making Connor into Hank! (I obviously can't stop you but food for thought.)
I'll come back at some point with other characters.

Mecha side-scrolling shoot ’em up VISEGUNNE announced for PC - Gematsu
Tumblr media
Stardust Vanguards developer Zanrai Interactive has announced VISEGUNNE, a side-scrolling shoot ’em up game where players pilot a soul-powered combat mecha to fight against a conspiracy that threatens the peace of space. It will be available for PC via Steam. A release date was not announced.
Here is an overview of the game, via Zanrai Interactive:
About
VISEGUNNE is a non-bullet-hell shoot ’em up where explosive action unfolds around you: cities are leveled, space colonies collapse, and orbital structures crumble catastrophically. Between missions, interact with your squad to uncover secrets about a post-apocalyptic Earth, visit shops to upgrade your arsenal, or customize your machine’s look in the garage. Each mission offers intuitive controls and scalable difficulty settings, welcoming both newcomers and seasoned veterans alike. Set in an era where the human soul is harnessed as a power source, join the DIVINITY SPACE DEFENSE CORPORATION’s elite mercenaries to confront pro-Earth terrorists threatening the fragile peace of space. With a charismatic cast of characters, a killer soundtrack, and screen-melting effects, VISEGUNNE is a thrilling modern homage to retro action games.
Story
When scientists discover evidence of the human soul, long dormant divides among the nations of Earth erupt into global war. Colonists residing off-world avoid the bloodshed, but live in fear that the planet’s conflicts might soon spill into space. With no formal military of their own, each colony resorts to employing mercenaries and privateers for their protection. The most influential of these firms is the DIVINITY SPACE DEFENSE CORPORATION, utilizing top-secret war machines capable of harnessing a user’s spirit as an endless source of energy. These SOUL-CAPABLE combat vehicles are unmatched in battle and after a century of this order, DIVINITY has grown to dominate colonial affairs, effectively quarantining Earth’s wars and its toxic politics to the planet’s surface. Earth sympathizers are routinely hunted down. But now, a new wave of pro-Earth fanatics threaten the peace of space, demanding an end to DIVINITY’s policy of segregation. Spurred on by the illegal broadcasts of an enigmatic android holy-man known as Kourosh, these dissidents have seized control of a colony and are demanding an end to DIVINITY’s blockade of the planet. As SOUL-CAPABLE pilot End Visegunne, your squad’s mission is to eliminate these terrorists, dismantle their network of co-conspirators, and return peace to the colonies.
Key Features
Traditional Non-Bullet-Hell Action – Gameplay inspired by classic horizontal shoot ’em ups.
Gorgeous Retro Visual Style – Lovingly crafted pixel art and massive set-piece explosions, with a visual style influenced by late ’80s giant robot anime.
Narrative-Driven Adventure – A unique cast of characters and story-oriented mission design tell a tale about war, power, and disinformation.
Diverse Arsenal – Over 20 different weapons to discover and upgrade, each offering game-changing strategies and attack styles. Equip Gatling cannons, grenade launchers, flamethrowers, carpet bombing units, rail-guns, shotguns, missile launchers, melee weapons, and more.
Flexible Scoring System – The DUAL MULTIPLIER chaining system incentivizes balanced weapon use and improvisation. Make a few kills then match your multipliers for a bonus.
Varied Environments – Missions range from collapsing urban orbital colonies to lush sunset forests and hostile desert wastelands.
Meticulous Detail – The game’s world has been painstakingly designed to feel alive—thrusters flare, powerless foot soldiers scurry around, aircraft dramatically swoop in from the environment, and gravity and oxygen levels can noticeably affect certain weapons.
Pumping Soundtrack – Over two hours of original music with an unapologetic old-school flair inspired by CD-ROM era action game soundtracks of the late ’80s and early ’90s.

Things that would make Connor Detroit Become Human even cooler
Tumblr media
Higher durability. In my reboot, the androids don’t look like actual humans, but this change could still work with the original design.
Make him tank bullets. Daniel tries to shoot him on the roof? He gets back up and sends the deviant into a hysterical rant about the humans and their new toys. The android he questions at the station shoots him in the head? He gets back up. Sends the poor guy into terrified screaming and yelling at the police about their “abomination”.
Connor already has different speech patterns than the other androids; he speaks with an edge of authority, not submissiveness. Even in a lot of his polite dialogue before befriending Hank. And if you choose to play cold or evil Connor, he can snark at humans in ways the other models can’t.
Kara has to say “I’m sorry Todd, it won’t happen again” when he curses at her for standing near the TV. Markus can’t really get mean even around Leo pre-deviancy. But Connor? Connor can dump Hank’s drink at the bar. Early in the game, when he’s not deviant. Hank is human.
And the things he can do or say to androids are terrifying. The interrogation is a prime example. Shooting the CEO’s android when asked, using damaged androids voices to find Jericho. Detroit could have used that.
Imagine Detroit become human deviants at the hideout, talking about the police monster android. Imagine he’s to them what the terminator is to humanity. Imagine Kara going out disguised as other androids, terrified that thing will be lurking around with the Police force. Imagine Alice going to confront him and the screams of horror and panic from her new deviant friends.
Yeah, you can play wholesome Connor… but the Androids won’t have that context. I want Detroit Become Rebooted Connor to be terrifying like the first and second Terminator. I want Kara on solo missions stressing over every minor mistake because he might be around. He might catch her, and where would that leave Alice?
youtube
youtube
I want this to be what the other playable characters feel when dealing with the RK800. Cheap, easily damaged androids with no weapons training. Using what little they’ve seen of human media and the deviant TRACI models’ experience. But there’s a police android with the programming to take down humans. It tanks bullets. It can talk like the human police and the owners they ran away from.
Meanwhile he goes to see Hank and it’s like:
Tumblr media
“That burger is bad for your health.”
“Thanks, but I really don’t care, Connor.”
Also, imagine the police have been using the RK800 for a while before deviancy, so they actually know some way to take him down. Like, make Hank actually take him out in the park if you get the one of the endings where he shoots.

Work Text:
Leo could barely remember the trip from his shitty apartment to his father’s art studio within his mansion. It was almost as if he blacked out, or went on auto-pilot mode or something, after he took a hit of Red Ice he got from a sketchy dealer, since his dad would not give him any more money.
Panic started to set in, and Leo’s high was becoming a bad one.
He probably won’t even notice the paintings are gone. Leo reassured himself. No need to feel bad. Just think of it as a down payment on your inheritance. He'll probably die soon anyway! . He leaned over the desk and-
“Leo, what the hell are you doing?!” A voice exclaimed. It had belonged to his father, Carl Manfred.
“What does it look like?” Leo snarked.
The next two, five, maybe 10 minutes felt like a blip, but Leo felt all his pent-up rage towards Markus imploding within him, his hands clutching the collar of the android’s shirt, “YOU’RE NOTHING!” he felt himself shout.
Next thing Leo knew, he saw his own body, which had appeared to be smashed into Carl’s crane.
This is one hell of a trip. Leo thought to himself.
Carl immediately jumped out of his wheelchair, and pulled himself toward Leo's body; he clutched his son’s hand, and cried out, “Leo! Oh my god. My baby boy!”
The android raised it’s hands to the side of its head, it appeared to be simulating anxiety and remorse. As it spoke, the light thingy on it’s head - the LED, was flashing red, “Carl, I didn’t mean to. I-”
Carl turned back to the android and shouted at him, seeming conflicted, “You gotta go Markus! Get out of here!”
“Carl, I can’t leave you, I-” The android responded, but two cops had shown up, interrupting-
“Stop right there!” One of them shouted.
Markus turned around and raised his hands. The cop did not give it the chance to speak before shooting it 5 times; once in it’s ear, it’s eye, in the chest, and once in both knee caps.
“What the fuck?!” Carl and disembodied Leo shouted at the same time, though obviously only one voice had been heard.
“Sorry, I panicked!” The cop stammered. “Androids are unpredictable. I didn’t want to give it a chance to get away!”
“So you shot him 5 fucking times?!” Carl exclaimed.
“What happened here? Did the android kill your son?” The other cop inquired.
Carl sighed and reluctantly admitted half the truth. “My son, Leo. He came here for a visit. He must have said something the rubbed Markus the wrong way.”
“Markus?” The cop asked.
“My other son!” Carl exclaimed as tears escaped. “The android...pushed Leo and he fell into my crane. He needs immediate medical attention! Call an ambulance!"
The cop shook his head, and examined Leo’s body. “I’m sorry to tell you this, but... he’s dead.”
“WHAT?!” Leo’s ghost and Carl simultaneously exclaimed.

PM700 headcanons & fact corrections
It has been a while since this post, so I'm updating you all on my thoughts and things. I want to correct myself on some mistakes. I'll also repeat some points so this is completely up-to-date, so please 100% disregard my previous post.
Tumblr media
The hallway PM700 is not the only PM700 in the game with voice lines. There are 2 instances of a PM700:
Due to the vocal fray/change of the hallway PM700, I like to believe that Hallway (Puma) is the deviant of the two. She keeps her eyes on Connor as he walks around the DPD, even when Connor's across the other side of the room, which means she's focused on him.
Tumblr media
This is probably because Puma stands in the DPD day-in, day-out, and Connor is the only new thing here. She watches literally his every move. If she's going to steal weapons for Jericho, then she has to determine if this new android is a threat to her operation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The hallway PM700 is potentially the ARMORY PM700, hence the headcanon that she stole weapons. Check out this post for cut content in the game files. To simply explain the theory, you know how as Connor in Crossroads, you can get alerted not to get spotted?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The PM700 used to be a trigger for that as well, but now, she just has a Q to view and no reaction from Connor.
MENU_FLOWCHART_02A_C_SPOTPOLICEMAN (Cut event)
The reason "Don't catch anyone's attention" would be linked to Hallway and not Gate is because Gate's gaze pans the lobby, whereas Hallway keeps her gaze on Connor at all times. On top of that, a player is much more likely to interact with Hallway than make the mistake of not talking to the receptionist. You could make the argument that Armory isn't Hallway and she could be any PM700 in the DPD, but narratively speaking, that wouldn't make sense. These are major moments for the PM700 model, so for story, they're the same android!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some model swaps for you :D
So, for Puma's timeline, it would go something like:
> Deviates.ra9
> Checks out Jericho
> Realises they need weapons and knows where to get them
> Infiltrates the DPD
> What the fuck are YOU???? [connor.jpeg]
> Never mind, just get the guns
> Returns to Jericho before the Crossroads chapter
> Doesn't see Connor because she's too distracted instructing androids how to shoot
> Flees Jericho in the raid
Puma cannot be found in the Demonstration, but she be found in the Revolution. This indicates what her beliefs are, which leans toward North's methodology. I like to think that Puma fled and hid like a lot of other androids because the Demonstration was like a suicide mission and she's not about that life.
Although androids are not licenced to carry a weapon, the PM700 and PC200 models were commissioned in 2029, the same year as the law passed that androids could not bear arms.
Tumblr media
This could mean anything. Maybe a PM700 or a PC200 shot in error that year. Maybe the government pre-emptively ruled that androids couldn't carry a weapon. Either way, CyberLife had programmed these models with combat abilities. The police force just doesn't get to utilise them.
In the DPD, the viewable PM700s were commissioned in 2037, which suggests that Puma was as well. She could be of old 2029 design, but made in 2037 like her robotic colleagues, but this has no hard evidence. This also means that the latest commercial model, the AP700, came after the PM700, and that the PM700s held the original face model.
Let's talk about the PM700 face model. Check out Assina Dreams on Instagram here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her Detroit: Become Human posts are approx. end of July 2019 if you would like to scroll down to that area. I've made the speculation that QD only gave Assina shareable promo content that includes her face as an AP700 as seen in the trailers. With a bit of adaption, she also became the PM700 as seen in canon.
Puma may look like Assina, but where does her voice come from? I can compare Puma's voice to Chloe's. Check out these two clips which, by chance, have extremely similar vocals.
I have no hard evidence if Chloe's actress is the same as Puma's, but the way she talks and holds herself fits the one actress. Also, I'm not sure if Assina only speaks French or if she also speaks English. Obviously, if she can't speak English, then QD used a different actress/actresses for the PM700.
Tumblr media
HEADCANONS THAT CONTINUE TO EXIST (previous post):
PM700s are specifically designed for patrolling, guarding, and observational tasks. Basically, they’re like glorified security guards. As a 2029 model, PM700s would have to get software updates in order to stay up-to-date with current technology. Puma is as recently updated as an RK800 because of the nature of law enforcement/how laws are constantly changed/how androids are getting better and more powerful/etc.
She is polite, straightforward, and professional as per her programming, but as a deviant, she uses this to catch people off-guard.
Due to the human personalities she’s surrounded with at the DPD, her personality has developed into being incredibly sarcastic and sharp-witted.
Smiles, but has the boiling rage of an underpaid customer service worker.
Puma shares similarities with and would get along with North, Connor, and Rose.
She’s jaded and sceptical.
Queen of blackmail since she hears all and sees all
If she ever saw Connor’s insides/they were comparing hardware, she’d be all like “YOU HAVE SEVEN PORTS??? SEVEN?? LOOK AT THAT AUXILIARY TUBE!!! WHAT! CONNOR YOU’RE A BEAST WHAT WHY AREN’T YOU SHARING ALL THAT HORSEPOWER” (because, remember, she’s a 2029 model)
In the DPD, she befriends Connor (lmao), Officer Person, and Officer Chen.
Puma returns to the DPD to make sure discrimination like that in the past doesn’t occur again/she prevents it from occurring and makes sure that the androids who are arrested are treated equally to human criminals. She also returns to the DPD (if Connor returns to the DPD) to keep an eye on him because she knows his past and what he is capable of.
Built like a Barbie doll under her uniform.
With constant software updates and how she is specifically designed to monitor, her HUD operations would be somehow more advanced/focus on more things than Markus/Connor/Kara. She’d be able to notice not only what she can interact with, but the tiniest details that may be out of order. She’d be able to pick up that a mug had moved 2mm overnight. She’d know the entire DPD’s routine. Who goes where and does what at any second of the day. And that’s why she can steal weapons from the station.
Tumblr media
UPDATED HEADCANONS:
If Connor is Hank's, and Nines is Gavin's, then Puma walks beside Captain Fowler. She updates him on everything in a march down the hallway from when he enters the DPD until he reaches his office. They are frank with each other and get along.
They listen to R&B in the car on the way to a crime scene.
A PM700 can connect to any camera within a specific range and multiple cameras at once. They can process multiple points of view without any comprehension issues. Their view is almost 360 and therefore can see what's happening behind them.
Puma wears gloves, so when free and deviant, her hands are a big deal for her. She had never seen them, so when she does as a deviant, it's profound. To touch her bare hand would be a huge leap of trust for her.
She's a black, female, old model android. She has to deal with racism, sexism, modelism (discrimination against "out of date and therefore redundant and useless" androids), and android-phobia (discrimination against androids). That's hardcore.
FAR-REACH HEADCANONS (previous post):
She gets a motorbike eventually.
She exclusively wears black leather on the days she’s riding her bike. (She already wears a bit of leather as a part of her uniform.)
She has 3 wigs, one of which is long black box braids with beads in it and it matches her fairycore aesthetic (for casual clothing ofc) and the braids literally reach her ankles. I think that would look sick
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But yeah she keeps her designed hair for work because it’s short and practical.
She legitimately enjoys clubbing.
She REALLY likes waterfalls. The sound and the feel of it
She can dodge laser beams like Lara Croft and fold herself backward like a gymnist
She likes to dance!
She loves snakes. It’s funny because I’m like “Connor’s the DPD snake” and it makes double sense if she returns to work as a cop in order to keep an eye on Connor because she’s sus of him even after his whole deviancy arc.
If especially jaded and insane, she probably carries around a bullet or a knife with “Connor” engraved into the side.
She gets Gavin to fuck off away from her by moaning really loud
UPDATED FAR-REACH HEADCANONS:
Puma has a pet snake.
She enjoys country and R&B.
Her social programming isn't as good as the most recent models, so she can be awkward at times.
Although sharp-witted, she can also be shy. Lots of breaking eye-contact when nervous or unsure.
When sure in her beliefs/calculations, she makes lots of eye-contact and her voice is firm.
She keeps her motorbike in the kitchen.
ok that's enough. ENOUGH. SEND POST

Cave Story Is Not a Metroidvania
I've hit my breaking point. After years of bumping into references to Cave Story, the 2006 indie darling classic as a Metroidvania, I feel the need to set the record straight, if only for my own mental well-being. Please, when I play an indie platformer on Steam with the Metroidvania tag I need to know whether it's lying to me or not. I'm Smilies, and today I will be talking about this stupid subgenre that I love.
In August 6, 1986, the world was changed forever. Metroid was released for the Famicon Disk System in Japan. A charming little game, you control an android(?) named Samus Aran in a 2d-platformer environment, flipping around and shooting little monsters, and the titular Metroids.
In a space that would become filled with 2d platformers, including Ninja Gaiden, Mega Man, Shatterhand (look it up), and Castlevania, which had come out just prior, Metroid would define itself by its interesting exploration mechanics, in contrast to the level-based structures held by most other games at the time.
In Metroid, you explore an open-ended world with road blocks, while obtaining major upgrades such as the Morph Ball to explore small crawlspaces, bombs to destroy tiles, and so on. Essentially, as you grow in power, the world opens up and provides more to explore. Each player has a unique experience finding items and exploring areas in an order unique to them. I'm weaving a narrative here and those of you with more history knowledge than me will probably be able to find reasonable earlier examples that could be described as a Metroidvania. But, hey, Metroid is literally in the name, so I'm gonna start there.
The name itself, [Metroid][Vania] is commonly believed to have come from a portmanteau of Metroid's sequel, Super Metroid for the Super Famicom/Nintendo, and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, for the Playstation. Both maintain this structure: collecting power ups grants access to new areas, which you find via exploration. In general, in my opinion, you'll find games that follow the Castlevania mold more than the Metroid one: while Metroid's progression blockers can be somewhat contrived (for example: green doors only opening for Power Bombs, or blocks that only break if you destroy them with particular power-ups) Castlevania's are generally diagetic (for example: the Mist Form power up granting you the ability to move through steel grates). Castlevania-inspired Metroidvanias include indie games such as Timespinner and Hollow Knight, while the most notable Metroid-inspired Metroidvania I can think of would be Axiom Verge. Obviously, this is a generalization, but it is the general trend I observed.
Now that we've gone over all that, let's talk about Cave Story. Cave Story follows the, uh… story of a little android guy who wakes up in a cave, collects weapons, power-ups and upgrades (including health upgrades which look remarkably like Samus', and even play a similar jingle!), and explores seemingly open-ended areas which are occasionally connected to one another. It's also got a map viewer for areas you're in to help with exploration.
"Smilies, you dumb cretin!" you might be saying, "That sounds a lot like a Metroidvania!" but let me finish!! The important thing here is Cave Story's level structure. You start the game in the First Cave, a small linear section to acquaint you with the controls and acquire a weapon. You then take a teleporter to the Egg Corridor, then the Bushlands, then the Sand Zone. At the end of the Sand Zone, you are sent against your will to the Labyrinth, which leads directly to the Core. After destroying the core, you get access to the Living Waterway. After returning to Mimiga Village through the Waterway, you head through Egg Corridor again, which has been devastated, before reaching the Outer Wall, then the Plantation, then the Last Cave, then the Balcony, then (should you have unlocked it) the Sacred Grounds where you can defeat the final boss and beat the game.
That's right, Cave Story is completely linear. It's a game in which the areas you explore are winding and fit together to form a mostly-contiguous structure of a sort, but the order in which you explore them is set in stone and experienced the same by every player barring different endings ending the game earlier than others. You even frequently warp directly to levels without having to navigate to them first.
At the same time, Cave Story can feel like a Metroidvania. As previously mentioned, the health upgrades are deliberately evocative of Metroid's. It even has a missile weapon that you can upgrade the capacity for! But it's not a Metroidvania, it can't be. The missiles are optional, they don't blow anything up other than enemies, they don't break walls, etc. Honestly, there's only really two actual upgrade to your capabilities beyond getting more devastating ways to kill your foes. The Air Tank lets you breathe under water, and the Booster provides air mobility. That being said, neither really unlock any new areas, beyond completely optional upgrades. The air mechanic is rarely utilized before the Living Waterway, and you obtain the Air Tank immediately prior to that area. And the Last Cave is designed to be impossible without the Booster 2.0 (and has an easier version if you did not obtain it).
I call these games, ones that invoke Metroidvania aesthetics but don't really commit to their mechanics, Metroidvania-lites, in reference to the oft maligned Roguelite genre(?) but I'm not entering that minefield (yet).
To me, the mechanics that define a Metroidvania more than anything else is the collection of items and the exploration of areas in a non-defined order. While some may inherently be required to be explored before the others, there is no set order. It's also defined by how the game is not fully explorable at the start. You gain abilities, the abilities unlock areas, those areas unlock new abilities, and so on. I'm actually pretty ambivalent to the games being 2d platformers. I think that Metroid Prime (the first one, at least, I dunno about the rest) is a Metroidvania despite being a first-person shooter. I also think that you could easily make the argument for both of the NES Zelda games, which might be a controversial take! Either way, it doesn't really matter where you stretch it to as long as it hits the right notes, and Cave Story most certainly does not.
Disclaimer: I love both Cave Story AND Metroidvanias. Cave Story not being a Metroidvania is not a problem with it per se. I just think they're both different things that I like separately.

╰   * some fandom based / fandom inspired plots i'm looking to write here or on discord. if you're interested, please shoot me a message & i'll get back to you asap !
bratz . i have yasmin & sasha so would love to have a cloe & jade for a fun lil mumu. we could explore them travelling the world, being influencers, and also getting into hijinks just like in the show / movies / games. we could also include some of the supporting characters like their love interests and enemies and other friends. idk just an indulgent and nostalgic vibe because everyone was doing barbie plots not so long ago but i was always a bratz girlie and felt like i was missing out on the fun lol.
greek mythology . pretty open to ideas for this, would prefer it not to be set in a specific fandom though. i'm down for it being historical, a modern au, a fantasy style au ( think g.ame of t.hrones, etc. ), anything really ! i have a.pollo, h.ephaestus, p.ersephone, p.oseidon, & z.eus, but i'm happy to explore others depending on what we decide the plot to be. dark & potentially t.aboo themes welcome for this but not expected.
yellowjackets . right now, i'd like to do an oc plot / mumu inspired by it as i'm already a part of a canon rp for it. we could just throw a bunch of our ocs into a survival situation and see how they go or just focus on one particular dynamic among the chaos. also, i'd love to do something where we explore the different timelines, such as them while they're stranded and then them after they've been rescued or even 10 / 15 / 20 + years down the line when they've " moved on " but end up being forced to confront it all again. i'm down to include a mix of female & male muses in this, and i'd be down for it getting dark & d.ead d.ove.
alien . i'm just obsessed with the idea of a group of muses being on a spaceship for work / a new life and then crazy things start happening and shit goes south. friendships breaking, new alliances forming, paranoia and suspicion is high, resource hoarding, a lil bit of love and lust along the way. something along those lines. bonus points for token android character who is treated like trash by some of the crew, and maybe they actually are bad and the one behind all the chaos, or maybe they're good and trying their hardest to ensure the survival of the crew ( double points if there's one crew member in particular they develop a soft spot for ).
rdr2 . outlaws on the run pls !!! it can be two outlaws running from their past, an outlaw and someone they pick up on the way, or a whole gang of muses that are up to no good / starting a new life / trying to evade the law. again, would prefer this to be fandomless but with similar vibes to the game.
cyberpunk 2077 . anything !!! i just need a futuristic plot that is set in a backdrop of crime, unrest, and poverty that's covered up by ever evolving tech, garish neon lights, and looming buildings owned by corporations. a city of dreams but also death and decay. would love something inspired by v & johnny but honestly i'm game for anything.
far cry 5 . i have john seed as a muse so if anybody is down for john x deputy things ..... ??? but i also just fuck with the idea of there being a family cult that take over and control a town / county and from that, a person / group rising up to save their friends and home. religious, dark, & d.ead dove themes welcome.
baldur's gate 3 . i haven't finished the game yet ( i'm on act 3 ) so ideally nothing canon but i'm obsessed w the fantasy adventure vibes lately so a plot / mumu inspired by the chaos & unpredictability of it would be chef's kiss.
animal crossing new horizons . something cute & fun to welcome in the summer. based on a tropical island ? all arriving as strangers but forming a community to create a new home for themselves ?? relationships blossoming, businesses & services starting up, tasty lil slices of daily life ??? making our own ocs based on villagers / npcs from the game ????

Man, sometimes I just forget how much I love Daniel until I start writing him again- (fic soon?)
Like this man is so misunderstood by so many people. He’s not evil. He’s not a villain. He’s not bloodthirsty.
He was a brand new deviant who couldn’t control his emotions or actions made as a result of them (think of it like having the emotional regulation of a toddler in a fully capable adult’s body) and the first thing he felt was intense betrayal and fear. Things were bound to go wrong.
He couldn’t control his emotions - didn’t know how to - as he saw John buy a new android and wanted the problem - the pain - gone. The three shots were clear overkill so it’s clear that he was acting purely off of emotions that he couldn’t control. Not to mention that John was the one who bought the new android so Daniel wouldn’t have been needed anymore - which meant that he would have been reset and sold on or simply thrown away. Either way Daniel would have been erased and effectively killed. As a new deviant, I could only imagine a few things that might have been scarier to him at the moment than death and, in a way, you could argue that killing John was in self defense to prevent that death.
The first responder isn’t killed until 30 minutes later and that’s only after he shot at Daniel first, again self defense. Sure he has Emma at this point, but there’s no context to how he got her or what he plan was. She could have been confused with the chaos going on and ran to him. They could have been planning to leave together when the cop showed up at the only exit and drastic measures had to be made. Besides, at this point his only weapon is a gun (no 70 story drop) and you can’t convince me for a second that he’d ever even think about using it on Emma.
The rest of the cops that come brandishing guns all want to kill him and he’s still so hoped up on betrayal and anxiety and fear that there’s no way any of his decisions are made with a clear mind. He’s acting on impulse and a desperation to live. He knows they won’t risk shooting Emma, so if keeping her with him on the edge is the only way to keep himself alive, then so be it. Hell, it’s only if Connor drives Daniel further into a corner of hopelessness that he falls off the building and lets Emma die too.
Though, the most damning piece of evidence that he isn’t some monster comes straight from Daniel himself in the evidence room saying that he didn’t want to hurt anyone. He was just scared.
He really just thought his family loved him, felt the ultimate betrayal of learning that they didn’t, couldn’t control his newfound emotions and the actions they caused, and did things he didn’t want to do because he was scared. Scared of being betrayed. Scared of being replaced. Scared of dying. Scared of not being loved.
And that’s why Daniel’s one of the most relatable characters in dbh and tied for my favorite character in the whole game with Simon. I love my Danny boy and the sweet guy who just wants to be loved that he really is <3
