I like smelling weird things. Scents that are more conceptual than wearable are not a problem, but even I meet my match. Enter Red Hoba which officially weaned me off blind buys. It's interesting to review this one after Dunhill Egyptian Smoke because to the extent that papyrus is quintessentially Egyptian, these offer very different interpretations.  Red Hoba is part of Xerjoff's Shooting Stars series but there are no embers in this meteor. It is a cold rock buried in the earth, a warning sign of destruction. (The other warning sign is Red Hoba's almost €400 price, but I digress.) Evelyn O'Connell played by Rachel Weisz in the Mummy perfectly symbolizes this scent. As a character, she bridges intellectual and sensuous, male and female, past and present. Also as half British and half Egyptian her presence attempts to reconcile and justify the colonizer and the exploited. Disembodied and unisex, Red Hoba seems to hold many of the same tensions.  Described as gourmand, but beyond a faint opening of dried fruit, Red Hoba is primarily the scent of wet leather-bound parchment and dust which seems fitting for our Egyptologist Evelyn. In this way, Red Hoba's papyrus note is hyperrealistic. Combined with iris, it is a papery powdery ode to mold and must with very faint hints of jasmine and sandalwood in the background. There is a very mysterious, ancient and even ominous quality to Red Hoba that hints of myths and things buried in sand. However it is ultimately unpleasant. It is a watery facsimile of Egypt– diluted, bastardized, othered. A colonialist fantasy in love with death and excavation versus the red blooded present. I don't like leather and don't like gourmands, but I can get behind this leather gourmand if we want to call it that. It's Dzing! by L'Artisan Parfumeur. It picks up the benzoin where Candy left off and takes the sweets to the circus. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When you first spray it, you definitely get a blast of the barnyard and cotton candy mixed together, maybe you’re at a kid's birthday party at the petting zoo. The barnyard smell is thanks to castoreum but also hay which brings a sweetness. There's a bit of a skanky musk, a waxiness, and powdery sweet benzoin. Good day my dear #fragfam friends 🙋🏻‍ Today I’m sharing with you a fragrance that truly blew my mind with its beauty, a fragrance that I had been awaiting since the first bottle prototype was made back in November 2020. FARIS is an Arabic word that means Knight and that black cap and the web-like design on it kind of gave me the impression that it’s going to be such a dark scent like most of their FIDDAH and WARDE Collections which are very magnificent and truly oriental. However, to my surprise, KAJAL had something up their sleeve with this fragrance where they worked with perfumers Urs Castelletti and David Chieze to create a new phenomenal masterpiece that continues to treat you and surprise you for many hours leaving you never feeling bored. The amazing scent profile of this fragrance takes you into a beautiful journey that remind me of my travel journeys throughout the fields in the heart of Europe with a very bold yet very refreshing sour fruity opening with a mix of Bergamot, Juniper Berries, Lemon, Apple and Orange that was tamed through a well-balanced touch of Lavender. The journey then takes in a tour through a spicy floral journey throughout Southeast Asia through a mix of Jasmine, Nutmeg, Rose, Coriander and Clove; until it settles down on one of those beautiful dry downs that KAJAL if famous for with an intimate mix of Amber, Vetiver, Sandalwood, Tonka Bean and Patchouli that draws a huge smile of happiness and satisfaction. Despite its beautiful continuously variable scent profile, I truly feel the European and more specifically French spirit in FARIS, and I think that it lives up to the true meaning of its name conquering all hearts and lands with full determination and stamina with its excellent longevity and projection and I totally find this release to be worthy of carrying the name FARIS.
