I have been pondering the recent rash of "post canon NHS and LXC would never ever reconcile bc even if NHS wanted to have Er-ge back, LXC would never ever forgive him for [insert reason of choice here]" type of posts + the "do you think NHS thinks very hard about how much Da-ge would hate him for becoming [the way that he is now] by choosing to seek vengeance" type of posts, and I think fundamentally the reason these posts do not jive with me is that we have no indication, in the show or in the book that uh, NHS gives a shit about either of these things very much anymore?

The first type of post is predicated on the assumption that LXC's forgiveness or lack thereof some some sort of either extension of mercy (which NHS obviously does not deserve <- or so assumes the post) or some form of punishment (which is obviously the correct answer) but the last scene we get with NHS both in the book and the show make no indication that this is a thing he wants? Or cares about? Book NHS has *sauntered off* with his little hat trophy and Show NHS walks off screen after saying something along the lines of "What is my responsibility I won't shirk, what isn't my responsibility I won't care about." Now, arguably, show NHS is having a worse go of it emotionally, but shows no real inclination or interest in either apologies or making up and being friends again with LWJ, LXC, WWX, or other people. Book NHS seems pretty pleased with the outcome of the events as a whole?

The second type of post is predicated on the fact that NHS finds Da-ge's judgement a horrible burden to bear at this stage in the game, which! He might! But again especially in the book we get no indication that he has any fucks left to give about what Da-ge may or may not have wanted since Da-ge is dead. In both the show and the book, NHS went about revenge taking very specific and complicated actions with the desired result of JGY dying, but he certainly took the scenic route getting there, which, he didn't need to? As I've written about before, JGY didn't see him as a threat. If he wanted JGY dead he could've arranged to poison JGY's tea like, 10 years ago and had done with it instead of his complicated Rube Goldberg life ruining scheme. If he is still sickly anxious about how Da-ge might feel about the scheming and the trouble causing and the whole everything, that's certainly possible, but he must've decided it was worth it anyway regardless of that, and I don't know that it necessarily would've changed just because he got what he wanted at the end.

Overall, I think as a fandom we think a lot about like "will and should this relationship ever be repaired or similar to how it used to be?" and "does this character deserve/not deserve the forgiveness of people they've hurt or abandoned?" which can be interesting questions! I do feel like these are often taken as "is a character morally good (deserves to be forgiven) or morally bad (deserves to rot in hell forever never forgiven ever ever)" and based entirely on if Character is the meta writer's blorbo. Under this paradigm the concept of "Character did bad things to get exactly what they wanted and were happy about that and no relationships were ever repaired and the emotional detachment of people they used to care about no longer matters to them!" is uncomfortable.

It's just that for NHS I've increasingly come to the conclusion that canonically, I don't think NHS thinks he has anything to apologize for, nor is he super interested in being forgiven! He got what he wanted the way he wanted it to happen. Which is potentially supremely unsatisfying but I think is very sexy as a narrative concept.

1. Canon I outright reject: ...that Qinghe went to shit the years he pulled his Headshaker schtick. #1, he still had elders, advisors, and even JGY and LXC who all had vested interests in making certain QHN succeeded after NMJ's death. If he were to make a bunch of decisions contrary to everything the sect is about, there would be revolution - QHN is a martial sect, and loyalty to the Nie family line only goes so far. I do believe some decisions were made to make it look less powerful and active than it was - such as rather than sending disciples to solve issues, rogue cultivators just 'happened' to be passing by to take care of the problems since that old QHN wasn't answering the town's letters, etc etc etc. And I firmly believe the stories about Xinglu Ridge aren't because of the saber tombs - the tombs had been there since long before the Headshaker took office - but I think the rumours were spread specifically because NHS was trying to keep people away and those were the best way (except when it comes to little Jin brats who think they're unkillable, damn it Jiang-xiong keep a tighter leash on your nephew!).

8. Unpopular opinion about them: ...That he really is LAZY. Like, I enjoy reading (and occasionally writing) fics where he secretly trains his saber or the fan, or he'll put in work for things that 'really matter', etc etc, but other than fun reads, that's not how I see NHS. He's a dandy and a spoiled younger brother and he doesn't want to do any actual work! And this is why I love him and related to him!

I, a huge nie huaisang fan, has realized something critical.

When I mean nie huaisang in this post I mean lectures nie huaisang with the roughly shoulder length hair.

context: I have needed a haircut because my hair length was kinda all over the place. I also have these weird bang things going on, they're not really bangs but do reach from my eyes to my jaw and it's a little messy but whatever

so I just decided a solid five inches was probably enough for now

that was yesterday. I had my dad take me to great clips where this really awesome guy cut my hair and it all went smoothly, my hair was actually cut straight for once and I made the smart decision to not get layers because that shit gets my hair more staticy (which makes no sense but whatever)

This isn't a fic request just something that's been digging a burrow so deep into my brain I had to share it.

Sequel scene to the branding fic where the Sunshot forces have successfully overrun the Nightless City and Huaisang's been found, and Mingjue's in the middle of discussing shit with the other leaders when he's brought in so there's a whole *crowd* there to see the brand, the robes, the broken spirit (mistake by his escorts? intentional humiliation? he thinks it's possibly the latter).

All Huaisang can do is kneel, practically suffocating and near vomiting from the shame as his brain turns the gossiping whispers around him into dull noise in a last-ditch effort to preserve what's left of his sanity.

His brother has to despise him, as he's practically an embodiment of his worthlessness as a Nie now. A grotesque mockery of everything their sect -their family- stands for. At best he can probably hope for exile... much more likely is that the stain on their name will be removed directly.

Shaking and sick and utterly crushed by self-loathing, he can't speak, not to apologize or beg or anything else. What right does he have to do that?

Then his brother crouches down in front of him, and Huaisang involuntarily flinches, raising his head.

The boiling sea of rage in his brother's expression is not at him.

It's for him.

And that's when he finally breaks down in tears.

some recent thoughts on Nie Mingjue and Jin Guangyao, and why even though I find Nie Mingjue very frustrating in the midst of his Baxia-induced anger issues, I think he’s also a pretty sympathetic character as a whole and it’s really understandable why he thinks the way he does

(as someone who ships 3zun and nieyao, and through the lens of “Jin Guangyao is my blorbo”)

I’ve seen a tendency to paint NMJ and JGY’s relationship in black and white in terms of who was fundamentally more in the right, which to be honest is not really the approach I take to fandom in general. to me the tragedy is that NMJ and JGY before JGY's casting-out had immense respect and perhaps even love (platonic, romantic, whatever) for each other. in the end, a lack of mutual understanding of each others' circumstances that could have otherwise eventually been overcome was driven, by bigotry, Jin Guangshan, and the Nie cultivation style, into becoming an insurmountable difference that eventually killed them both

NMJ definitely Did Not Get where JGY was coming from when JGY was making survival decisions and keeping secrets. he was simply not raised in a way where he ever even had to think about the types of choices that JGY has been forced to make since he was quite young. but at the same time, NMJ was a teenager raising his brother and his sect from a very young age and I think it's a disservice to his character to fail to acknowledge that his entire life he expected to die a young and horrific death, just like he watched his father die, and that this expectation deeply colors his approach to the world. JGY plays the long game. NMJ does not get to think about that, he just has to raise his brother, win a war, and try not to drive his sect into the ground before he kicks the bucket in a violent and gruesome manner. he does not have a choice about any of these things.

and said things are extremely difficult to do, especially as a teenager, which I think is a reflection of MDZS's whole thing where their entire generation is just traumatized by war and conflict and a dearth of genuine, honorable guidance and leadership, which leads to such fractures

but it's also a series of tasks that required the kind of attitude that Nie Mingjue develops, and that in combination with Baxia’s influence gives him this really immovable perspective on life that he just won't budge on with JGY. I think it’s really significant that when Jin Guangyao does regularly play Clarity for NMJ, they get along quite well. and I also think it's really understandable why NMJ is so stubborn and headstrong - he's had to fight his way through being sect leader and not take "no" for an answer, because what the hell else can a young, new leader do to avoid being taken advantage of? frankly even if he had taken up a bit of whatever guile Nie Huaisang didn’t hog from the Nie gene pool... why would he direct it towards self-preservation? he has no room for that kind of fear because he is going to be dead in a few years.

importantly as well, Nie Mingjue unjustly judges Jin Guangyao because he is unable to understand the context that JGY is coming from, but that same righteousness is the reason that he's the first person to have given Meng Yao a fair shake and rewarded his hard work and labor, and that matters a lot to Jin Guangyao and their relationship as a whole. you can’t really have one without the other unless you give Nie Mingjue time to grow up.

unfortunately, Nie Mingjue died his 20s, and was in his teens when the Sunshot Campaign began. look me in the eyes and explain to me what kind of behavior you expect from a 20-something with a magic rage sword.

Zhanchengxian or sangcheng for the ship meme?

Why not both, anon! (Also, very sorry this took so long, I'm just real slow!)

Zhanchengxian: Ship it!

What made you ship it?

I love chengxian and I'm not opposed to wangxian, so it started off as, like, sure, why not! Wei Wuxian has two hands! We can bring all the unresolved business and tension of chengxian into wangxian and see if something interesting happens!

Then I got the zhancheng brainrot real bad, so. That was that.

What are your favourite things about the ship?

I like it for a lot of the same reasons I like chengxian, namely that it pushes on Wei Wuxian's and Lan Wangji's weaknesses in an interesting way. Wei Wuxian because Jiang Cheng is a reminder of all of the suffering of his past life that he wants to escape; and Lan Wangji because he's projected a lot of his own guilt at not intervening in Wei Wuxian's first life onto Jiang Cheng. I think, for a long time, Lan Wangji has had very simple, black-and-white opinions about Jiang Cheng, which are reinforced by how partial he is to Wei Wuxian, and additionally driven by jealousy at their prior intimacy. But it's much harder to maintain these ideas about someone up close, rather than afar with minimal contact. Basically, I love it when people are forced to actually perceive Jiang Cheng as, like, a real person who was seriously damaged by his terrible life, and who has triumphed over odds that someone like Lan Wangji, beloved second son of his alive family, has never had to confront.

Also love the ways in which this triad has the potential to illuminate the people and relationships within it! Lan Wangji can see Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng more clearly in the context of their relationship to each other; I think it's a relationship where Wei Wuxian's worse qualities are often evident. (This is not a backhanded compliment! Intimacy is sometimes seeing someone you love be kind of a dink! Perceive him!) Lan Wangji, meanwhile, might be a stabilizing force for chengxian; if he can help Wei Wuxian regulate himself, Wei Wuxian might actually be able to show up and be vulnerable. I don't know if Wei Wuxian would get anything out of zhancheng except horniness, but I bet he'd have fun.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

Wei Wuxian has a lot of work to do within the chengxian branch of the relationship, and Lan Wangji shielding him from that work sucks and is bad for everybody. Also, the evolution into zhanchengxian should transform and develop wangxian (for example, through insight into Wei Wuxian's childhood dynamic with Jiang Cheng, the revelation that Wei Wuxian left the Jiang rather than being expelled, etc.) not just be wangxian with Jiang Cheng grafted on.

Sangcheng: Ship it!

What made you ship it?

Sangcheng was actually my gateway MDZS ship, and Nie Huaisang was my gateway blorbo. Although the Jiang Cheng brainrot has firmly set it, I'm still very fond of Nie Huaisang.

Also, their shenanigans in the Cloud Recesses were very charming. Let them get a little silly and explore each others' bodies!!

What are your favourite things about the ship?

There are a lot of potential sangcheng flavours! Cloud Recesses-era sangcheng is markedly different from post-canon sangcheng. They both got a lot worse, for starters.

Sometimes it's nice to give Jiang Cheng a partner who has some separation from Wei Wuxian. I love him in the Wei Wuxian Suffering Vortex, but really the healthiest choice is for Jiang Cheng to have at least one relationship with someone who is just into him on his own merits. He has them!! It's not impossible!!

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

I'll accept a range of Nie Huaisangs, since he is such a puzzlebox of a character, but you gotta give the guy some depth. Like, he did a multi-year revenge scheme and stabbed himself in the leg to accomplish it. He's not a simple or shallow guy.

Round 3 Has Arrived! The Which MXTX Character do You Most Want to Study Like a Little Bug Tournament Bracket

The closest match from round 2 was Lan Sizhui vs Shi Wudu, in which Sizhui won by a tiny 1.6% of the vote. This one gave me a small heart attack, because I wasn't expecting Swd to make it this far, and there's only 2 canon illustrations of him, so when he briefly took the lead I had to panic-dm an artist for round 3 art. lmao.

The biggest win margin in round 2 was Nie Huaisang vs Jin Zixun, in which Nhs won a record-setting 95% of the vote. Get fucked, Zixun.

The most total votes in round 2 went to Qi Rong vs Jiang Cheng, with 623 votes between them. A popular artist/Qi Rong enjoyer got a hold of this one early on, so thanks for the promo, starbiology. Sorry your blorbo lost.

The fewest total votes in round 2 went to Lan Qiren vs Yu Ziyuan, with 188 votes between them. Nobody these days cares about old people 😔.
