A love letter to Haley Grayson

to honour her introduction into WFA canon, let me introduce you to my actual favourite DC character, the little three-legged pitbull (but i prefer her as a staffy) puppy...

Haley

god i could go on about bitewing so much but we'll give you the run down of her as she is iconic

so, haley was first introduced in Nightwing (2016) Issue 78, the first of Tom Taylor's run. she is being chased and tormented by some thugs in Blüdhaven and Dick saves her

he takes her home and tells babs he is taking her to the pound and babs is like "no you aren't" and she was right.

in issue 80, she makes her first journey to vigilante status by joining Tim as he goes to talk to the street kids

she then gets blessed with her codename by Tim in issue 81, giving us her two names, Haley and Bitewing

she mostly exists to be cute but hen in issue 87, she gets kidnapped!

who would be so cruel!

but dick and babs save her and we get a cute family photo

she's mostly just for cuteness for a while but she makes an appearance in issue 90, when dick's apartment is blown up and he goes to stay with wally. nothing important happens with her but i have to point it out

Then issue 98 happens

Nite-mite gives haley a cute matching outfit and she can talk!!!

so they go on an adventure and its super cute and haley saves the day of course

she makes a brief appearance in issue 100 but her next notable one is in issue 105, the wonderful first person issue

he appears again in 106 with gar and it is very cute

the other amazing haley moment is in the 2022 annual where we get this awesome dream sequence where haley is Bitewing again and she trashes the apartment. it's so good and so cute

TL;DR Haley is the best DC character and you cannot tell me otherwise

I see so much fanon around how Dick left home in his teens — fired as Robin, possibly kicked out, etc. I’d like to learn more about what happened in canon. You seem super knowledgeable about comic canon. Can you give me some pointers about which series/issues of the comic cover that?

Okay so there's three different origin stories about Dick leaving behind Robin to become Nightwing.

Teen Titans: Judas Contract

Nightwing (1996) Issue #105: Nightwing Year One

In most issues, Dick's departure as Robin was actually pretty tame.

In Batman (1940) Issue #408, Dick gets shot by the Joker and Bruce is actually really remorseful the whole incident happened. He gets upset because he views Dick as a child and he's worried and sad that Dick got hurt. The possibility that he could've lost him is the reason why Bruce pushes him to leave behind Robin.

Bruce is okay with Dick leaving at first but later grows angrier without him there. It doesn't help that the media and the entire country was so absolutely furious with Batman due to the absence of Dick, Robin, by his side.

The New Teen Titans: The Judas Contract

In this version, Dick voluntarily leaves the suit because he sees it as the childish version of Batman's partner rather than an adult

This is an interesting take on things because in Issue #408, Dick doesn't see the Robin costume as being part of a childish persona, he sees at as being Batman's equivalent. He's more upset that Bruce looks at him and sees a kid. So in that comic, the Robin costume wasn't something Dick can outgrow whereas in this issue, it's considered that way.

Nightwing Year One

Nightwing (1996) Issue #101 is a very different story and personally the one that makes the most sense to me.

In this story, this is the one where Bruce actually fires Dick. He fires Dick for his commitment to the Titans and other responsibilities and feels furious that Dick has other things that take priorities over him.

Not to mention that Bruce actually locks Alfred out of the batcave, knowing that he would never be okay with or accept Bruce's decision.

But the reason I like this is because it ties both the previous comics and what Dick told Roy about Bruce firing him from the action comics.

Action Comics (1938) Issue #613

By that time, Dick was on the verge of leaving because he wanted to become an adult and be seen as an equal to Bruce rather than a child. However Bruce being the actual man-child that he is, decided that it was better to leave before being left behind. And then he got really mad that Dick left which tracks with every version of him.

I know this is confusing as to why Bruce and Dick end up fighting over this given how relatively peaceful him leaving Robin actually was, but it wasn't the fact that Dick was leaving, it was the consequence of him leaving and how Bruce felt after Dick left which caused issues between them.

Nightwing (2016) Issue #7

Bruce didn't realize how much he needed Dick until he left and in his hurt blamed Dick for leaving him which is why the Dick leaving Robin to become Nightwing incident is so heavy and dark and still stains their relationship today.

TREKMATCH! # 210 - TNG's "True Q" vs 2016's Batman: Bad Blood

BATMAN: BAD BLOOD

Batman is seemingly killed, so Nightwing takes on the batman-tle and teams up with Batwoman, Robin, and also Batwing who shows up halfway through to stop Talia Al Ghul from hypnotizing some business types. The movie doesn't erase Batwoman's sexuality but it does change why she gets kicked out of the military which works with my theory that they're gonna have to retcon the don't-ask-don't-tell part of Batwoman's origin very soon if they want to keep her age late-twenties, early-thirties. I really thought this Batfilm was maybe the best animated one, and among the best Batmovies of all.

GRADE: A-

STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION - "True Q"

An honors student comes aboard the Enterprise to learn how to watch cultures grow in petri dishes or whatever and also discovers she's a Q. Of course our good pal Regular Q shows up to teach her how to be all-powerful but Picard is like "What if she wants to be a normal human and do her six page essay that's due tomorrow though?" Obviously she doesn't!

GRADE: D

Victory to Batman, tying things up at 105!

Did anyone think that this issue would be an epic final battle between Batman & Ghost-Maker because of the intense rivalry between them? They're basically just "I don't wanna fight you."; "Fine, we don't have to fight"; "OK, don't leave Gotham, we can work together, but in one condition, don't kill." 😂😂 Plus, we almost know Ghost-Maker's real name before he cut Bruce. Well, I was expecting Babs appears in this last issue of Batman before Future State, but she doesn't. She is just mentioned here and apparently Ghost-Maker has known her identity. So, unfortunately I can't get her last content in 2020 (even though there is still one issue of Tec left & maybe she will appear in non-Batfamily comics as well). But, it's OK. We will get more of Batman & Ghost-Maker after Future State after they decide to work together and he will become a new ally for Batfamily. See you in March 2021, Babs... By DC creators who created a list of the most "crush-worthy characters" for DC Pride promotion, Dick appeared the most out of all the characters, appearing on several creators’ lists.

Danny Lore a queer comic writer said, "Obviously we all have a crush on Nightwing. That's just natural."

Dick's considered the winner of that unofficial competition so I'd say everyone in DC, at one point or another, has had a crush on Nightwing.
