The warm affection in this story brought up good memories of squeezing into a family friend's apartment to celebrate the Lunar New Year. I love seeing these characters being happy and finding each other in a Modern AU, and, of course, seeing Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji drawn to each other in their delightfully awkward and sweet way as neighbors.

Like, the end of the main story actually left in tears and it's been a while since I cried over fanfiction. Absolutely loved it, 10/10, would recommend, very cathartic. I loved Wen Qing's POV in the main story, how her anger and her thirst for revenge transformed the story and the cultivation society at large. Everything about this felt very satisfying and I loved how certain minor characters got second chances (via kidnapping) as well. Resentful ghost Wen Qing and martial god Wei Wuxian is such an awesome combination as well and Wangxian in this story were very adorable as well. Excerpt: She uses memories of her family as a bulwark against influence from the tormented yin energy. She needs this energy to become hers... If she fails here, A-Ning will be destroyed. Her family will never be given a proper burial. They will suffer eternally, trapped in the blood pool at the Burial Mounds and left out of the cycle of reincarnation forever. The people responsible will escape their karma. The resentment tries to crush her, wants to influence her and consumer her power, but Wen Qing has an anchor – Wen Ning's eyes widen slightly, and he reaches out to her. Pupils have returned to his eyes. “A-jie...” Her brother is finally conscious. Wen Qing will not fail him, not ever again. She pulls, letting her own will clash against the sentient portions of the power. They have suffered longer, but her resentment is fresh and fully remembered. She is not a fragment. She will not lose herself to them. The spirits go dormant – Wen Qing absorbed all the resentment fueling them. Her hand closes around Wen Ning's. “A-Ning.” She reaches out and brushes his hair out of his face with her other hand. She can actually feel the strands under her fingers. When she looks back, she also releases a gasping sound. Hovering over the broken shards of the Tally, a nearly transparent image of Wei Wuxian flickers. His eyes glow red, as his ghostly image lifts an image of the fully completed Yin Tiger Tally, but then he disappears back to a flicker of ghost flame, fading.

It is then that he notices that the child in front (a little boy around nine years old, if Lan Wangji had to guess) has the hilt of a jeweled dagger protruding from between his ribs, and a small novice’s bow clutched in his hands with an arrow still nocked to the string.

“They’re not alive,” Li Shuai gasps, clawing her way upright against one of the pavilion’s four corner pillars as the ghosts keep coming towards them. “That’s sixth shidi, the one with the bow, and our third shimei there in the pink—but they’re not corpses, I don’t know how they could have—”

The ghosts come to a halt, then, standing right in front of Lan Wangji’s ward with pensive looks on their faces. Some have clear death-wounds in their chests, and one of the boys wears a gown covered with dull black blood from the cruel gash in his throat—but all of them are looking straight at Li Shuai, and their lips shape her name with open wistfulness; some of the older ones call her A-Shuai, and the children call her Li-shijie, and then they nod once in Lan Wangji’s direction before stepping closer to the ward and disappearing into it.

He feels their spiritual energy pouring into the seals before he sees it in the ward, reeling back at the sudden shock of ninety-one ghostly golden cores taking up arms beside his—ready to defend their sect in death as they could not do in life, and then he finally understands why the land-eater went unnoticed for so long. The ghosts must have been suppressing it until its power surpassed theirs, and then they sought out Wang Hai for help when they could do nothing more—but for them to have taken shape like this, in something resembling their living selves even though their bodies must long since have rotted away—it should have been beyond them to do such a thing, unless…

“Auntie!” Xiao-Yan screams. “It’s Wei-zongzhu! He’s coming back!”

As Author stiltonbasket notes, this is the CQL (The Untamed) Universe with a few differences, the major one is that A-Qing is still alive during and after the Yi City events and is being treated for the damages Xue Yang did to her. There are other differences, given it's The Untamed version of the story. Second most important being that the Confession in Guanyin temple does not occur.

The story is written with both narrative point-of-view and letters to and from those involved. The style is most effective in moving the story forward.

Twelve Moons and a Fortnight begins months after the events of Guanyin temple. Lan Zhan is Chief Cultivator and Wei Wuxian has spent the following months near Gusu. He meets regularly with the Lan Juniors in Caiyi. It is at one of these meetings that he is told Jin Ling asked him to speak with Jiang Wanyin about something.

Wei Wuxian becomes Wei-zhongzhu, acting as Jiang sect leader while Jiang Wanyin aids Jin Ling in taking controlling power from the various factions in Lanling.

There is a brief stop in Yunping during an official tour of Yungmeng, where Wei Wuxian collapses and is taken somewhere to rest, which results in the adoption of a child, the eventual foundation of a lady's refuge, and the mystery of Wei Ying's illness begins.

There is the romance between Wei Ying and Lan Zhan that everyone except Wei Ying can see so plainly.

The world of Yungmeng is fleshed out in detail as the seasons pass. There is a land eater, and a mystery about its origins. Was a recent bout of illness in the area a result or the cause of the land eater? Did it have something to do with the summoning ritual Mo Xuanyu used to bring back Wei Wuxian? Why is Wei Wuxian having nightmares of Mo Xuanyu? There are discussions about golden cores and core sickness ... and an upset young child who has already seen one mother die.

The story is not centered only on Yungmeng. There are other important events occuring. Lanling is brought under control. In Gusu, Lan Xichen has healed the wounds Maiden Qing received as part of the Yi City story arc that precedes the story. There are junior shenanigans, including a rainy night and a bonfire involving Lan Xichen and the juniors.

We learn of Nie Mingjue's several Qi deviations. And the depth of the many betrayals of Jin Guangyao that still affect the living.

The stakes for all involved become higher as illness risks killing Wei Wuxian before he can reach a happy ending.

The resolution to most of what's going on hits like a hammer.

There is a night of terror, questioning using the qin language, reveals through empathy, several tense chapters with warning about body horror. And healing. Followed by 8 chapters in which some secrets are finally exposed, mysteries resolved and there are weddings to attend.

Author stiltonbasket has provided a number (47) of tales related to this one. Of these, one of the most poignant for me was The Trouble with Talismans: a Treatise on Time-Travel by Young Master Lan Xiaohui (Age 6)

Ooo, this has one of my favorite fics. It's unfinished but still so, so good: hide fox, and all after by blackfeather - a modern cultivators AU of MDZS wherein Mo Xuanyu requests asylum at Qinghe Nie and, as the summary says, the resurrection of the Yiling Patriarch goes very differently. Mo Xuanyu's narrative voice is so, so good in this, and I'm super into the modern cultivation worldbuilding of this fic.

And she makes good use of her second chance as well, making sure her two younger brothers live their best lifes. I really love Wen Qing's characterization in this story and loved how the canon divergence played out. Excerpt: She jerks awake to the feeling of a solid wooden chair under her, to the stuttering of a candle. For a second, she thinks that this must still be Koi Tower, that Jin Guangshan has lied yet again. But— —the desk under her folded arms is familiar lacquered wood, as familiar as the white and red robes she’s wearing and the scattered scrolls and books she’d been sleeping on. Her office, in Yiling. In Yiling. “Fuck,” she says, and in the same breath pushes herself up, not caring that the chair clatters to the floor, that her robes aren’t in order. If this is—if she isn’t hallucinating all of this with the last sane figments of her dying brain, this is after the burning of Lotus Pier, the fall of Yunmeng-Jiang by just days. And that means Wei Wuxian and Jiang Wanyin, the core transfer—her brother. Wen Ning is alive! He has to be, even if this isn’t real. Wei Wuxian always joked about her having an iron bear trap for a mind and he isn’t really wrong; even if this is a dying hallucination, she’d have Wen Ning alive.

Those are definitely 2 different fics. I remember reading the Burial Mounds one, where they're both ghosts and they raise A-Yuan together, and there was no house fire. Couldn't find it myself, but hopefully that'll help someone else find one or both of these...

4. For the fic finder, there's a fic I'm pretty sure I first found somewhere on this or the recs blog but I can't for the life of me find again. It deals with WWX accepting a deal where he'll be a prisoner of the Nie clan if the Wen remnants are promised safety. NHS is happy to have his friend around, but it's major depression hours for WWX

I've been dying to find this one fanfic but I have no idea where it is now and after constant serching I decided to give it ago.

From what I remember: Lan Wangji is taken prisoner and kept in a prison next to Wei WuXian who is some sort of creature (a Phionex to be exact) and Lan Wangji watched helplessly as he is tortured everyday to provide for the Wen Sect using his tears, Phionex cry, etc.

I also remember Wei WuXian helps him escape the prison and Lan Zhan goes back for him but (I think) Wei WuXian already burnt Nightless City and saved the civilians and the Wens but is unconscious.

Lan Wangji did not cry, but he was not overjoyed to face death, either. He was in pain, and he was troubled. How long would it be before someone stumbled upon his body and told his family he wouldn’t be coming home? Who would be the one to tell Lan Sizhui that he had lost his father again?

Lan Wangji did not cry. Instead, he sang.

It was a song of his own creation, shared only between two people. A song that had been practiced and perfected over the course of years, seeing fingers bleed and become calloused on strings plucked in yearning harmony. Each note was stitched together like another reason to fall in love, filled with longing and holding the weight of feelings left unsaid.

It was a song named after two people who would soon meet again in death.

Serenade of the Night is a darker story. Wei Wuxian dies in a sacrificial ritual to keep the Wen who still exist in the Burial Mounds alive. When the news reaches Cloud Recesses, Lan Wangji enters the Burial Mounds and does what he can to help those who remain, with the consent of an uncle and brother who are a lot more understanding … Nightless City did not occur nor did the death of Jin Zixuan. There is no discipline whip. Lan Yuan is adopted by Lan Wangji with the blessing of family, but Lan Yuan is being raised in the Burial Mounds, because none of the Wen residents may leave.

After a year, Lan Wangji returns to night hunts at the behest of Wen Qing. Three years after the fall of the Yiling Laozu, he finds himself gravely injured with a blow for which neither his core nor his new-found medical knowledge can provide recovery. As he lies, dying, he sings Wangxian …

He survives. And returns to Yiling to find a city waiting for a Full Moon Festival, held every month. There are also travelers in Yiling waiting for the festival … many appear to be at death's door themselves.

The moon is full, and a god descends upon Yiling. People that Lan Wangji had helped in making their last days more comfortable approach the god and recognize, and are recognized, as dear and beloved. One young boy recognizes his older brother. Lan Wangji looks and sees the one he misses the most. "Wei Ying". And the god smiles and walks into the city.

Wei Ying departs as the day breaks. The merriment of the evening gives way to the mourning of those who yet live.

A chase of sorts begins, as those at death's door are visited, Lan Zhan not far behind. Eventually, even his brother becomes concerned, and the matter is exposed, but suppressed in the name of brothers. The chase continues until Wei Ying is caught and words exchanged. The god of death does not remember. Lan Zhan provides his own memories. And a proposal.

There is a wedding, complete with some huffing about the lack of tradition, which is smoothed over. As his brother says, "Wangji is marrying a god".

This began as an entry for the MDZS Big Bang 2020. The ending is somewhat … ambiguous. The bard who recites the tale of Hanguan-Jun and Yiling Laozu has other tales in the book he holds. This was projected to become the first in a series of tales. Alas, the author has not yet followed with a second tale.
