You woke up the next morning wondering where you were. It had been a while since you had woken up in a bed, and the events of last night had come back to you. The day had started off as just another trying to survive the endless death games, then Niragi Suguru happened. You had teamed up with the tall, handsome man with black eyes that seemed to pierce your soul. In the heat of the moment you had a passionate hookup followed by him coercing you to go with him back to the beach.

It was almost laughable how dramatic he had been. Who in their right mind would have said no the most attractive man you had seen in the borderlands offering to take them to the only place that had electricity and running water. Either this guy had never looked at himself in a mirror, or he just got off on ordering people around. Your bet was on the latter.

He emerged from the bathroom without his shirt on. It was the first time you were able to get a good look at his body. Despite being skinny he was still muscular. He had that arrogant walk as he made his way over to the bed. He cocked his head to the side and devoured you with his eyes, and you were dying to know what was going through his head.

“What are you thinking about?” You said softly.

“Just how I’m going to violate every inch of your body.”

You hadn’t even known this man for 24 hours yet you felt desperate to feel his touch again. You leapt up and closed the gap between you. With how little your bikini covered you could feel his warm skin against yours right away as he pulled you in by your waist. Your hands got lost in his silky black hair as your lips collided. One man apparently hadn’t seen him coming through and accidentally backed into him. When he turned around and saw exactly who it was he panicked. “I’m so sorry Niragi,” he trembled “I didn’t know it was you.”

Niragi’s expression went cold, and he lowered the gun from his shoulder. When he took a step forward the man flinched and covered his head.

Niragi immediately threw his head back and began to laugh. “You should have seen the look on your face”

The man looked up in shock, but Niragi was already walking away with his hand planted firmly on your lower back.

Your heart raced. You should be trying to get away. Electricity and running water be damned. But there was something about being this close to a dangerous man that lit up a fire within you.

Your meeting with Hatter was in a hotel conference room. You recognized Aguni and Last Boss there, but there were also were several new faces. A man with long hair and wearing a kimono style robe over swim trunks greeted you. “Welcome Y/N, to our oasis known as the beach. I am your leader Hatter.”

He gave you the rundown of all the rules, then unveiled the wall of cards. “This is our hope. If we unite, then we can collect every card. I have reliable sources that say for every deck of cards we collect one person will be returned to our world.”

“How do you pick who gets to go?” You had seen so many people in the crowds. Surely collecting enough cards for everyone to return would be impossible.

“Here at the beach we have a rank system. Every time a player returns home or someone dies everyone will move up one rank.” He walked closer to you “Niragi says that he wishes to recruit you to the militant corps. Those who protect our oasis from the ones who seek to undermine our cause will be greatly rewarded.”

Your role if you became a militant was becoming more clear. You weren’t here to break up fights or whatever ‘keeping the peace’ had implied. You were here to make sure everyone continued to collect cards for this cult leader. That part hadn’t exactly been explained to you. “I understand.” You said.

“Next we need the executive council to assess your performance in the games. Do you have a specialty? Which type of games best suit you?”

Niragi came over and leaned against your shoulder, “Oh she’s a hearts player. This girl is ruthless.”

“Excellent. We’ll have Mira observe her in tonight’s game then.”

Niragi scoffed, “Mira? No way am I trusting that freak with her. I’ll take her to the game myself.”

“We’ll need someone who can give a completely unbiased opinion Niragi, and since you’re already trying to induct her into the militants it should be a different person.”

Niragi took a step forward, giving Hatter an angry glare a few inches away from his face.

Hatter glanced to his right.

“Niragi let it go.” Aguni commanded. “You knew the rules when you brought her here.”

He backed off. “Fine, but I want Last Boss to go with them.”

The girl in the black swim suit cover up just giggled, seemingly unbothered by Niragi’s comments, “I’d be delighted to observe in tonight’s games. I always find hearts players so interesting.”

“It’s settled then” Hatter said and stretched out his arms “Now go out and enjoy the beach.”

Back in his room Niragi was giving his two cents about the beach rules, “I don’t buy into that bullshit Hatter says about the cards.” Niragi said. “None of us are getting out of here.”

“Why are you working for him then?”

“Because I’m playing as many games as I can before I die princess, and this is the best place for that.” He rummaged through one of the drawers. “I’m not gonna be one of those drunk idiots at the pool living in fear of a laser.”

He found what he was looking for in the drawer and grinned at you, “close your eyes. I’ve got a surprise for you.”

You did, and then you felt cold metal against your neck. You held your breath.

“I want you to take this to your game tonight.”

You opened your eyes back up and saw he looked deep in thought as he traced the knife over your neck. Like he was pondering what he could do to you with it.

“I thought our agreement was that I would get a gun.” You stepped back and crossed your arms.

Niragi just laughed, “you think Aguni is stupid enough to give people guns on their first day here?” He took a step forward not letting you get any distance away from him. “If you use it to get away from the beach the Militants will have to hunt you down, and I’ll be disappointed that I wasn’t done having fun with my new plaything yet.”

“Can I at least get some better clothes to wear to the game?”

His radio crackled to life, “Niragi, we found cards in room 256. What should we do with him.”

“Get him placed on my team tonight. I’ll make sure he doesn’t come back from the game. And get me the info on everyone he played with last time. I’ll investigate them.”

Another reality check for the day. It was setting in hard now that what you had been told was only one percent of the job description. Killing in the games was one thing, you had to do it to survive. But you couldn’t bring yourself to comfortable with the idea of killing someone outside of them.

You’re not doing this to support Hatter’s cult, you told yourself. You’re doing this to get the resources you need to survive the games.

You had felt infatuated enough to put your own safety on the line pursuing this man, but knowing everyone around you would be on the line too made you feel dread.

He clearly could sense your discomfort because he wrapped his arms around you. It felt so conflicting. That he was the source of your dread, but you also wanted to sink into him and let him be your comfort. He began to stroke your face and then tilted your chin up to look into his eyes, “in this world you can be the hunter or the prey, and while everyone else lives in terror, we’ll be the ones that thrive.”

Niragi hoped he’d catch one of the suspects in their room. The morning’s meeting had really pissed him off and he was hoping to he wouldn’t have to wait until the games to blow off some steam. The man had a way of making his bad moods everyone else’s problem.

He could have assigned one of the militants to search the rooms while the inhabitants were off to the games, but he really wanted a direct confrontation. A couple weeks ago when Hatter had declared anyone who hid cards a traitor he had been in his element. Every day was a new chapter in his reign of terror.

But now fear was keeping most people in line, and patrolling had become much more dull. Last Boss had pitched the idea of a public execution, let people see firsthand what the consequences are. He had liked the idea at the time. The panic and fear in the lobby had been delicious. The way that people looked at the two of them after that day just reinforced how much he loved the power he had here.

Watching people loose hope as they begged for there lives ignited him, pleading that Hatter wouldn’t let him get away with this.

“Oh hun,” he had told one woman “Hatter ordered this.”

But now he regretted it. Between that, and strict enforcement of collecting card when cars returned from the games his job was growing a bit more dull. He was lucky if they found a single traitor in a day. People trying to escape once they learned the dark secrets of this place still happened. He also was looking forward to see how Y/N would perform at her first job. He knew what you were capable of. He had seen that fire in you when you killed, and he wanted to see if he could draw that dark side out of you again. He could feel an uncomfortable tightness in his pants when he thought about inflicting terror together.

He wasn’t going to ask you to kill any traitors just yet, but he wanted to see if he could start slowly pushing you in that direction.

It made him realize what bored him about most one night stands at the beach. He had no trouble getting laid. You checked obvious places like drawers, but also checking to see if there were any more creative ways of hiding them. After finding nothing you moved on to the next one. This time you could hear a person humming inside. “I’m going in” Niragi told you. “Block the door so he can’t get out.”

Your role didn’t end up being necessary. It only took one hit from Niragi’s rifle to put him on the floor. You grabbed the duct tape out of your bag while Niragi dragged him into the chair.

Niragi had made it very clear what your role would be one the suspect was secure.

“There’s only two outcomes sweetheart.” He had told you. “You get him to talk and no one has to die. Or you fail to make him talk and I have to kill him.”

You once again found yourself wishing you could fast forward to the future. To just skip past what had to be none next. You didn’t think you were capable of torture, but if you didn’t Niragi was fine with just shooting him. And the lingering thought, if you do what he wanted, then you could say goodbye to the chance of ever becoming a militant and having a weapon for the games. What would happen then? If you were tossed aside, defenseless, trapped in a madman’s cult until the games killed you.

Your plan was to try and scare him without having to inflict any serious injuries. Just think of it as another game, and those were your clear conditions.

The man screamed and thrashed about to try and get loose.

“Calm down,” Niragi said while circling the chair. “I just want to talk.” There was a sarcastic tone to his voice. Anyone who had been at the Beach long enough knew that Niragi wasn’t known for ‘just talking’ to captives. “You’ve had some pretty close contact with a traitor recently. Anything you have to tell us about that.”

The man froze up. He clearly knew that there was no fair trial here, and anything he said to Niragi could be twisted against him.

“It’d be a shame if my girl had to hurt you.”

You felt a pang of shame when the words “my girl” made your heart flutter. If only they had been in a different context.

He turned to look at you and that was your cue to take over. You smiled at him as you approached the captive. “Niragi darling I need you to help with something.”

Niragi grabbed the man’s face and pried his mouth open.

“No one’s coming to save you. Last Boss is patrolling this floor so if someone was stupid enough to try they would have to get through both him and Niragi.”

You took the knife out and asked Niragi to let go.

“So which is it? Are you going to tell us everything you know, or are you going to make me cut your tongue off?”

“I never took any cards. You can search everything. But, if I tell you what happen will you let me go.”

The door behind you now had those red lasers barring it, preventing anyone from trying to escape. The automated voice announced that this was a three of spades game, and as it did a fire erupted from a car partway down the tunnel.

Mira turned to you, “Isn’t this exciting, what are you going to do.”

“We can’t wait we have to run,” but as you turned you remembered something, “No it’s a trick. The tunnel is on a downward slope. Anyone running away from the fire could be suffocated by rising smoke.”

“Hey everyone, we have to go down,” you yelled as you grabbed Mira’s and the girl’s hand and started pulling in the other direction. Hopefully people had heard but there was no time to go back for them. “The fire is going to become impassable quickly.”

Your lungs burned as you attempted to run, trying to speed up but the debris made sprinting at full speed impossible. You crouched lower as you went along trying to gasp for breathable air below the smoke. It was becoming different to see, both from the smoke filling the air, and how much it stung to open your eyes. You felt the wall to guide your way. You held Mira’s hand behind you to try and keep the group together, but you didn’t quite feel comfortable reaching out to Last Boss in front of you.

Once you got a ways past the bus you looked back. The flames stretched from wall to wall. No one left on the other side was getting through.

You paused to cough for a moment, but knew you had to keep going. You needed to reach the edge of the debris because the inferno was going to spread quickly.

When you did you realized that you weren’t out of the tunnel yet. There was no announcement that the game had been cleared. You grabbed the knife out of your pocket not sure what the game would throw at you next. Your visibility had improved a bit and you could see there were about three other survivors outside of your group.

“Everyone ready to run again?” You asked, but as the four of you began jogging you heard a scream. You turned to see a Hyena ripping a woman apart. Two more were approaching. You stood behind Last Boss who had his Katana drawn.

You kept backing up, the heat behind you was unbearable, but you knew your weapon would be next to useless against these beasts, and one could probably eat you in the time it took Last Boss to fight the others. You lost your footing for a second and looked down to see a branch from the debris. It gave you an idea. You ripped off the branch and wrapped your hoodie around it.

Your body screamed at you not to get any closer to the fire. Just being close to it made you feel like you might melt away. But you managed to get the shirt into the flames.

You ran back to join Last Boss. It was just in time because the Hyenas had lost interest in the corpses of the other group. You waved your torch hoping you could scare them off if you made yourself look big, but there was something wrong about the animals here. It was like they programed to only be able to attack. They also seemed larger than they should be as well.

They charged, and you braced yourself. One leaped at you, and you brought up you torch to shove it in the hyena’s mouth. It screeched and backed away. As it attacked again, Last Boss lunged at it and impaled the beast. The third hyena rushed past and tackled Rin. You ran to hit its head to try and keep it from biting the girl’s face. You knew it wouldn’t do much but hoped it would buy her a few seconds. When last Boss impaled it, the animal collapsed on Rin.

The three of you had to work to push it off of her. All three animals were on the ground dying now, and you were able to finally keep running.

When the “game cleared” announcement came on you just sat down right there in the road exhausted. Your lungs burned, your eyes watered, your legs were sore, and when your hand brushed against your arm you felt something sticky. You looked down and noticed you had gotten several large scratches on your arm. Now that the rush of battle was wearing off they were starting to sting.

Last Boss stood next to you and stared into the tunnel. “Doesn’t it feel amazing. To have stared death in the eye, and have emerged on the other side.”

It was probably the most words you had ever heard him speak, “it really is something.”

Mira chimed in, “every day back in your world people try to not think about how close we always are to death, the only difference here is we can’t ignore it. It’s so interesting to see how people react to that.”

Back in the car you leaned against the door and relaxed. The cool night air felt amazing after the ordeal you just went through. Without having to think about immediate survival anymore you found your thoughts drifting back to Niragi. The way he walked like he owned the entire world, the way you felt like you could melt when he looked at you, the way his piercing felt when he touched you.

You blushed realizing how dirty your thoughts were becoming. You knew you shouldn’t let yourself get attached. You barely knew him, and quite frankly none of what you did know was good. He was mean, violent, and controlling with no good qualities to balance any of that out. On top of that he didn’t seem like the type for commitment. The way he referred to you, his toy, his plaything, was like he owned you. And he could discard you as soon as a new shiny doll showed up.

‘But shouldn’t I get to enjoy it while it lasts.’

Outside of her weird behavior Mira really was a nice teammate to have. after the game she had some bottles water and bandages to clean up your wounds. You felt lucky to only have one injury with how badly the other girl had been scratched up. It was hard to tell how much blood was from her wounds or the hyena’s. Then your thoughts were interrupted when she pulled over and handed everyone flashlights. “Pick out anything you want!” She exclaimed. You all went inside the convenience store. It was such a small thing, but you knew that at the beach, no one but members of the Militant and Provisional Corps were ever allowed to leave. So a little shopping trip must be nice for Rin who could only get out on game days.

You had just picked out some matcha Kit Kat bars when she pulled you aside. Looking around to make sure no one was close enough to hear she whispered to you, “I wouldn’t usually be stupid enough to speak up about this around him, but you just saved my life.” She looked over her back again. “Be careful around Niragi. I promise that whatever you’ve seen from him, he can get much worse. He’s hurt a lot of people. Just a week ago, someone said they saw a girl run out of his room screaming”

“Thank you,” you said. “But, I don’t think I’m allowed to leave.”

There wasn’t time to talk anymore you could hear that Last Boss was close by again. So you returned to filling a shopping bag with little treats. You felt a little guilty, that Rin had put her safety on the line to warn you, but you planned to keep heading towards the red flags anyways.

Back at the Beach Mira stopped you as you were getting out of the car, “I’d like to talk to you about the six of hearts game, sometime soon. Back in your world I was a Psychiatrist, so if you ever need someone to confide in I’m here.”

You practically ran into the lobby back at the Beach. You looked around, hoping to see the tall, dark haired man with a rifle propped on his shoulder. You were a little disappointed when he was no where to be seen, and decided to go up to the second floor balcony to get a better look.

You looked down at the crowd of people. There were people hugging and screaming, glad to see their friends had made it back alive. Others stared at the entrance with dread. One was crying while receiving news of a friend who hadn’t made it back.

As you looked for him an idea was forming in your mind. Niragi’s words from earlier were playing in your mind, ‘in this world you can be the hunter or the prey.’ And you only wanted to be prey if it was his prey.

If it was the thrill of the hunt he was after, you would deliver it to him.
