You are very patient and careful with people who accuse Ukraine of War Crimes. I'm American, and I would tell them to Fuck off about anything that happens to Russians.
You do realize that the Russians are victims in this too? It's no longer volunteers / contracters fighting on our land, and the civilians sure as fuck did nothing to influence any of this either way. There are anti-war protests in Russia, and the protestors are getting thrown in jail and/or beaten to death. Russia hasn't been a democracy since the 90s if at all, elections are getting falsified so blatantly it's almost funny. Putin's political opponents find themselves in prison on bullshit charges, dead, or running away. "Russians" aren't to blame for this any more than every single American personally killed people in the Middle East and in Vietnam. My grandparents live in Russia; they didn't consent to this war and Putin didn't ask them, or anybody. My native language is Russian, and I've met people here in the west of Ukraine who think that makes me and my family share the blame for what happened; that's nonsense easy to refute, given my mom was and is personally part of the effort holding Kharkiv, the part about "the Russians" is harder.
I won't be correcting Ukrainians who vent, who say "kill all Russians", they're hurting, they're traumatized, they are powerless and screaming.
But you, American stranger on the internet? Shut up. That's the logic that leads Russian soldiers to believe it's blameless to do anything to the "ukronazis" (they actually do believe that, Russian propaganda machine is real and mighty).
War crimes are bad no matter who they happen to, that's why they are "war" "crimes" - things that are crimes even during a war.
So, no. This conversation needs to be had.
It's just... a little silly to call both sides equal here, yeah.

i feel like people are skimming over the uk riots in a way that makes me want to tear my hair out. muslims in the uk are in active danger. immigrants in the uk are in active danger. refugees in the uk are in active danger. people of colour in the uk are in active danger. asian communities in the uk are in active danger. black communities in the uk are in active danger.
there are massive far right riots throughout the country right now and people like fucking elon musk and nigel farage are inciting it and still have a platform to speak. people have used three young girls deaths, people's genuine grief in southport, to try and gain traction for their own racist bullshit and it's working.
a lot of refugee charities have been forced to close leaving many people without support, homes, funding, food, etc. if you aren't able to donate please consider sending a message via the conversation over borders campaign! it will send a hopeful, welcoming letter to a refugee in the uk. there is also a guide to staying safe here.
please do your own research and donate to refugee charities, anti-islamophobia charities, mosques who are trying to rebuild after being destroyed, counter protesters, here are some i've heard positive things about but the list is extensive; southport strong together (support for the southport victims and their families), southport mosque rebuilding, riot repair fund, middlesbrough vulnerable residents, nasir mosque rebuilding, hull help for refugees, bristol welcomes migrants,

The thing I keep coming back to, with all the *gestures expansively* is that real life doesn't have peaceful epilogues.
Every single win has to be defended. Forever. I'm sorry. It sucks. The Nazis lost until they stopped losing. The US had abortion rights, and then 50 years later it didn't. Empires fall, and then they invade other countries again. Oppressive regimes are overthrown and replaced with other oppressive regimes. You will never finish the work etc etc etc. Which is why it's so fucking important to be able to acknowledge and celebrate progress, when it happens. The people who came before you didn't put in all that work for nothing, and you aren't, either. You can't save it all for the Ultimate Victory because there is never going to be an Ultimate Victory. There's no such thing as a time when everything is good, and ours shall not be the commune of Heaven.
