I love the basilisk! It's already one of my favorite mythical creatures and I really like this half-bird, half-snake/dragon interpretation. Depending on the universe, basilisk can be very small or very large too. I was wondering, how big or small are they in Virtue's End? And what about the other three ?
Basilisk love! 🙌
They can get quite large. Length-wise, I imagine the MC to be around 4-5 metres in their full, unsealed basilisk form. The only one that's larger out of the other three is the sylvan, who can grow to a towering height, fitting for an ancient forest giant imo. They can legit grow house-sized and larger.
Barghests are around 1.4 to 1.7 metres (when in canine form) and they can also turn into a large, swirling cloud of tendrils and shadows and darkness that is roughly the same mass.
Nokken are unique in that they can change their shape, most notably into a water horse type creature, but also into smaller forms. Never larger than their horse form however, which can get quite large as well. Similar to the barghest, they measure around 1.5 to 1.7 metres (at the shoulder).
So, in short, it's roughly: sylvan > basilisk > nokken (water horse) > barghest. Of course, not all are the same size and there can be variations within the same species, but these are their sizes on average. :-)

Can you tell us more about the Nokken yet? They just seem so interesting :)
Yeah of course!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
His name is Morrow, and he's a warlock. He lives with the other warlocks: Frowin and Nirine (and their dog, Omen).
A little context for the Nokken as a species: A Nokken is basically a male water/forest fae, the females are called Nixies. They become independent and capable from a very young age, typically leaving their mother to fend for themselves at around 3 or 4. They will use their unique magic to shapeshift/disguise themselves as common elves and find populated settlements to grow up in, learning languages and musical instruments. Once they reach maturity they return to the forests and live in or near bodies of water, using their learned skills to lure prey. They will eat nearly anything they can get their hands on- including others of their own kind.
So, Morrow here goes through some character development as you might imagine. He discovers that he has a calling for more advanced magical practice during his upbringing, so when he crosses paths with the warlocks later in life they befriend him and offer to teach him more.
Fun facts about him:
He was almost eaten by his own father
He plays the fiddle
He sleeps in a bathtub in the warlock's home

Imagine if Lysandra had returned I don't Kratos could survive that loll
Does Calliope have powers though? Since she's like part goddess?
Oh dear loll I don't think he would either! Lysandra would probably want to give him an earful, but seeing how he's changed and become better (and still feels guilty about their murder), there wouldn't be much need to lecture him. Maybe XDD
Yes, Calliope has powers in my fic! In canon, I'm not so sure since it was never mentioned. But she's shown to play the flute, and she's also named after the muse of epic poetry and eloquence, so I decided to give her musical/voice-based powers. I imagine playing certain songs on her flute would be the equivalent of spell-casting, like Atreus shouting "Skjalfa!" to activate his magic shock arrows.
Game-wise, I can see her being a supportive player in combat, where she stands at a safe distance to play songs, confusing and stunning enemies or temporarily making them friendly. She could even be like a Nokken where her song gives Atreus a strength boost!

Inktober 2022 day 11 🦅 "Eagle"
"And thus, the tale of the nokken was born." Smiled Honeymaren as she concluded her story.
Arendellian kids nodded with ooohs and aaaahs, and Elsa was amused to see Anna make a similar reaction.
The Queen then grinned. "You should come to Arendelle's school more often. You're a really good pedagogue."
"I keep telling her that." Smiled Elsa, who lived in Honeymaren's tribe for months now.
The brunette blushed, and made a humble gesture. "We're taught storytelling from the earliest age in my culture, it's nothing, really."
"You'd be a good teacher, though." Insisted Anna.
Elsa then gave her sister a strong look, though amusement tinkled in her eyes. "Alright, alright, I'm not pushing her!" Assured the Queen, and she raised her hands defensively.
"It's okay." Replied Honeymaren, understanding Anna's drift and smiling. "Nokk is more pushy than you anyway."
Kids laughed at her joke, especially since she just told a story about the Water Spirit's shenanigans.
Elsa rolled her eyes. "He's not that pushy."
Anna snorted. "Look at you! He tried to drawn you months ago, and now you're on his side."
The Fifth Spirit frowned. "Because it's my duty, and role, to make sure that resentful people like you don't hate him."
The redhead crossed her arms. "I'm just saying that he almost ended your life."
"And you don't like it at all."
"And I don't like it at all."
Elsa rolled her eyes. She was touched by her sister's care, but she would never ever bury the hatchet. She came back on the previous topic.
"What's funny is that while I understand and respect the Northuldra tale, I found it logical that the Water Spirit manifests himself as a horse, before Honeymaren even told me about the nokken."
"Logical?" Repeated Anna and Honeymaren in one voice.
Elsa smiled, and shrugged. "Well, as you know, I grew up reading a lot of books, and I was fond of folkloric ones. In greek mythology, it's believed that Poseidon was the one who created horses. So, in a way, it makes sense that Nokk looks like one... Or chose to look like one. I'm still unsure about how and when I could ask him about it."
"Poseidon is the one with the fork, right?" Remembered Honeymaren, trying her best to learn about new knowledge from the world.
Anna held her laughter next to her, and nodded. "Yep. That's him."
Elsa wanted to nudge her for her sass, but a kid gently poked at her. She turned, and his eyes were sparkling with imagination.
"Say, Lady Elsa, was the Wind Spirit a bird once?"
The Snow Queen was taken aback by the unexpected question. "Uh... Uhm, yeah, likely, I mean... Why not? It's possible."
"Will you ask her?" Intervened another child, excited about that theory too.
Elsa forced herself to smile. Sure, Gale was more playful than Nokk, and she could ask with more ease - she was afraid to offend the fussy Water Spirit with such a personal question - but still, she didn't want to be too forward on the beginning of her new job and new life with her new fellows.
"I... I will, one day." Answered Elsa evasively.
Anna gave her a side look, and had a small smile. She could sense the timidity in her sister, and took a mental note to have a private and gentle discussion with her on the matter.
"I'm sure that she were an eagle!" Exclaimed a boy.
"Was." Corrected the teacher, who was smiling at the class from her seat.
"Yeah, was. Was it an eagle?" Asked the boy, seemingly forgetting that Elsa clearly didn't know yet.
The Spirit now blushed, because a lot of eyes were on her asking her something she didn't know; the situation was too familiar and must have made her visibly uncomfortable, because Honeymaren put a hand on her shoulder and smiled at the children.
"Maybe she was. I heard that you made bird drawings recently?" She asked, and glanced towards the teacher who smiled at her. The children all nodded and exclaimed happily. "Can I see them?"
All the kids hurriedly went to their desks' drawers and took their papers to be the first to show her.
Honeymaren and Anna giggled at the scene and exchanged a smile. Elsa looked at them with deep love, and when their gazes naturally drifted to her, the azure blue eyes filled with emotional tears.
"Thank you." She murmured to both of them, a touched smile curling her lips.

Yandere headcanons for a nokken x female reader?
Ask: Yandere headcanons for a nokken x female reader?
A/N: Nokken’s are perfect for ‘yandere’ because the myth is they legit lure you to your watery death with their hypnotic music playing. So yeah, major trigger warnings here. [P.S.One or more exophilia posts then I’ll be back to finishing up those Castlevania asks in my askbox.)
TW!: Yandere, Death Mention (you get the drill)
💙♘💙♘💙
The first time you heard their sweet song, you were instantly hooked. Nothing you had ever heard could compare to the lovely music they would perform.
You heard the call from some distance off, but because a distant part of you recalled the stories, you stayed away. You weren’t about to fall for a trap, and a watery death didn’t sound like a pleasant end to you.
Still, at the moments your heart yearned the most; you’d hear that ethereal melody and your yearning would grow stronger. How they knew when you were feeling most vulnerable you didn’t know. You wanted to find out. You needed to find out. You needed to go and…
No! No! No! You’d tell yourself over and over again. You weren’t going to fall for it. You wouldn’t be taken advantage of. Still, chances were an encounter was inevitable. So if you were to meet this trickster spirit, you needed to be prepared.
So you studied. You read up on water spirits and the tactics they used. You bought countless earbuds and noise-canceling headphones in an attempt to block out their misleading siren song. You ended up finding one combination that worked best. The headphones were expensive, but they remarkably achieved what the box promised: no outside noise could penetrate them. It goes without saying, it never hurt to be safe rather than sorry, so you kept a pair of those rubber earplugs in as well.
You knew these kinds of creatures, Nokkens, some folklore called them, mainly called after mothers and children. And while you absolutely weren’t a mom, or even mom-like in any regard, you supposed you were still very much a child. Although a legal adult, your heart was young and wanted more than what awaited you. College, a job, marriage… none of that seemed to command your attention. Not the way art did; not the way travel did, not the way music did. You wanted to experience life, not just go through the motions of it. Deep down you were longing for something more… something deeper… something beautiful.
His song was it. It had to be it. But it couldn’t be, you mustn’t seek and record it, or try and capture him. It was dangerous, the books said. Nokkens, just as any spirits could be tricked if you played your cards right; but what those cards were, you had no idea.
You were not a young maiden with a farm plow, nor did you possess the strength to hold the reigns of even the fiercest of stallions. You were nothing but you. Was it enough? Would it ever be enough?
Your resolve had begun to crumble. You were missing a piece of yourself. That song manifested it. You felt deep down, if you were to listen to the charming song in its entirety, you’d become whole somehow. You’d be free. You wanted to, no, you needed to hear it.
So you set out.
He had known you would come eventually. Others had trespassed upon his form in the meantime, but it was nothing a menacing hiss and splash couldn’t take care of. He didn’t desire them the way he wanted you. He had never felt as strongly in his attraction to anyone. In all the years he had guarded this spring, in all the seasons he had sent his song out into the fresh spring air, never once had he come across a creature as beautiful and enchanting as you.
And oh, he could just sense it: the way you needed more, the way you were searching the same as he. You were both looking for meaning, for validation, and he recognized his, in you.
His beautiful, silly, little human. How naive and open-hearted you were, even at your age. At first sight, he feared your age would make you exempt from his seductive powers of persuasion, but thankfully your immaturity left you vulnerable. He liked that even more.
Sure he had fun luring those who challenged his existence or outright denied it even. But the most candied fruit was the often ripest; a bite of the fruit which offered itself up presently and willingly was almost sickeningly sweet.
He knew his call was working when the mail carrier visited your house more and more frequently. It was some distance from his spring, but it was nothing a handful of his helpful fairies couldn’t fix. They were endlessly fascinated by the packaging you’d receive. He’d permitted them to ramble on about what was it again? Oh yes, bubble wrap and tissue paper and the like. What mattered was you were gearing up. You were going to approach and confront him; it was only a matter of time until he saw your sweet features again. Only a short while until he could do more than just see your body.
He knew that once you'd come within range, you wouldn’t be able to resist. His song was extremely passionate, overwhelmingly so, for a mere mortal. But he was a trickster after all, and playing games was in his nature. So why not play a little bit with you? He saw no harm in it. One particular talent he was rather fond of using was his ability to change up the intensity of his allure. And so, that’s what he did.
As you tried more and more expensive and higher-grade devices, as relayed to him by his loyal fairies, he lessened the strength of his prowess. He wanted you confident enough to make your move sooner than later. He had grown tired of waiting. He wanted, no needed, you soon.
He desired for you to be only and fully his. Sure, it wasn’t going to be the easiest adjustment for you, but he knew you’d manage it well enough. You weren’t like the others. They had given up too quickly, so easily. They drowned with such dread, so unaccepting of their fate. Too often their refusal disenchanted him. But not you. Not this time. This time, he was certain. You would be his, willingly. You idolized him, craved him even. You needed him - it mattered little that you weren't aware of it yet.
It would be overwhelming for a moment; all deaths were. He knew his lover would struggle. But it couldn’t be lessened, he was afraid; tradition was tradition after all. Oh but the rebirth, the rebirth would be so worth the pain, so worth the lonely millennia he had to wait. You could withstand it. He knew you could. You were so much stronger than the others had been combined. You wouldn’t rise as another disappointing corpse, oh no. Your spirit would rise as his one and only; his one true love.
He knew you would come investigating any day now. Sooner than later, his bride would walk herself down their aisle, into their watery tomb.
He could scarcely wait.

some thoughts about my huldufolk au for dethklok...
overall, i think it'd be fun if they were still a band, in some kind of world where these creatures can be in a band. monster universe or something! but also fun to think about in a more historical context
pickles the draugr
i was thinking specifically he'd be a sea-dwelling draugr... classically they guard their barrows but there are some recorded mentions of sea draugr, and he would totally be a mariner if he were a norseman. always wandering etc.
in norse custom where you were buried and how you were buried was INCREDIBLY important so a burial at sea is like... so incomplete, which fits his lifestyle. and revenants/draugar are typically Like That because they have unfinished business or because they were really angry people, which fits. also the sea draugar look grosser than the land draugar, which is fun.
i can just see him with his braids falling out and bound up by salt, and that's why he's balding and has dreads. and he's constantly spewing sea water and of course drinking because, norse. and i can just imagine someone gliding over the ocean and all of a sudden this grody, barnacle covered corpse claws his way up onto deck and won't leave until you appease him with alcohol and gambling
troll nathan
LOOK UP john bauer trolls (there are some here but honestly just google john bauer trolls)! he'd basically just look like himself but with curly ears and some different proportions, but he's huge with a curtain of long black hair. trolls also tend to be solitary, preferring to live alone or in small families. imagine oscar and rose as trolls!!
they also sometimes have the ability to shapeshift, and i think it'd be cool if he could shapeshift into some kind of water creature, maybe a shark? also, trolls were said to be able to smell the blood of christians, which... lol
trolls turn to stone in direct sunlight, too, so he'd have to avoid it - which would lead to many hijinks, i'm sure
nokken skwisgaar
nokken skwisgaar is pretty straightforward ... nokken are lovely water spirits (mainly in lakes and river) who use enchanting violin playing (or guitar in this case?) to lure good christian women to their deaths (or maybe just to kiss them)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i see no difference. love is love 👍
dwarf murderface
murderface as a dwarf makes me happy bcause dvergar are stout and notoriously grumpy, which is just him, but they're also expert craftsman, especially when it comes to martial weapons, which !!!
I have always envisioned them with flat or smashed noses and metal skin, which i think aligns with murderface well!
in norse myth, they evolved from maggots that writhed on ymir's dead flesh, which i think kind of reflects how murderface thinks of himself :(
huldra/ulda toki
i realize these are usually female spirits, but i just think it fits toki so well, so let's just Trans his Gender, shall we? i also discussed him maybe being a seal-woman or a pesta sort of being, angel of death style, but i think i like huldra toki most of all! (ulda is what the sami call them)
they are beautiful women (or men in toki's case) with long hair, cow tails (or fox tails in swedish folklore), and hollow backs like tree trunks. the hollow back in particular reminded me of toki because his back is so mutilated from abuse
Tumblr media
they are also known for playing harps, so another string instrument! and toki is a guitarist, so that fits!
essentially, in myth, their "pure" beauty and innocence is seen as "seductive" but they often guide the people they lure into the forest to their demises, and not always on purpose. when angered, they're known to be brutal, vindictive, and terribly strong. when respected, they offer help and advice. all very toki!!!
in sami folklore, a human and an ulda can make ulda children; in norwegian tales, there are also male huldra, but unlike the women, they are ugly. so either of toki's parents could have been huldra/ulda. to mirror the abuse toki suffered in this AU, he might have been trapped in the world of humans, unable to go to the forest, for an extended period. maybe that's when his back began to rot?
some further undeveloped ideas. these are less scandinavian and more broadly norse because i got caught up in my special interest djkhsfdfgd:
charles is human. could be a priest or monk of odin, or some other kind of agent of him. probably a sorcerer. i could see him as a christian priest or monk who gets swept up in things and converts - and the interesting thing about that is that, with him being the deadman in canon, odin has domain over death, and odin killed himself to gain magical knowledge - which is exactly what charles did!!!!
MMA would probably be a raider... since he and his brother were raised to be killers, it would make sense. a viking, warlord, BIG christian-killer. possibly with some jotunn blood - i could see him being related in some way to surtr, the fire giant that helps bring about ragnarok
magnus is human. i can see him being a sorcerer, maybe a necromancer? we know magnus has a hard time letting things go ... he keeps beating a dead horse and living in the past, which is basically what necromancy is. that magic is definitely looked down upon; hel would not be happy. (the problem is, in norse culture, if you're a sorcerer you're automatically a fruit. i mean he IS a fruit, it's just funny.) i'm envisioning him stepping off MMAs boat evilly, totally thinking he's the brains of the operation...
Tumblr media
also side note on that: magnus has one eye, odin sacrificed an eye for wisdom ... parallels. maybe magnus was a human who was permitted to hang out with the huldufolk for whatever reason (and be in their band lmao), but there was a falling out with nathan? and when nathan took his eye, magnus gained his magic but lost his friends?
i need to think of stuff for the others (kinda wanted to make abigail a valkyrie idk...) but!! these are my thoughts so far.

This week's [23-08-2021 - 29-08-2021] reading log is here! I read a lot again this week and I feel like it's a lovely variety of fics. Most fics are Stucky like usual, but there's at least one other ship. I am constantly amazed by the talent people have in this fandom! There was one fic I read on Tumblr that I can't seem to find unfortunately, but when I do I'll make sure to reblog and rec it 💕
Favourites are marked with a 🌻
When life gives you lemons by moonthejedi394 @moonythejedi394 [Stucky, 40k words, Mature] (12/15 chapters available)
Or 13 Terrible Things to Do With Lemons Other Than Making Lemonade
Steve Rogers is a home health nurse. He works for an agency, which assigned him to the aging Winifred Barnes, the one and only Silent Era Hollywood darling. As her needs increased, she requested the agency assign Steve to her full-time. She could pay for it, so she got it. Steve then moved in with her, becoming her caregiver; he cooked, he cleaned, he managed her medications, he made sure she was comfortable.
Winifred's children treated him less than ideally. He was the help, after all. And then Steve had the audacity to go and turn out to be eldest son James Barnes's soulmate. No one saw that coming.
The Masseur and the Assassin by buckybarnesdeservestobehappy @buckybarnesdeservestobehappy [Stucky, 17k words, Explicit]
Bucky Barnes needed a vacation from his job. What he found was a happy ending.
The Words Breathe by buckbarnesdeservestobehappy [Stucky, 1k words, Mature]
All Steve has to do is keep his promise. When he doesn’t, Bucky gets mouthy.
Soft by this_wayward_life @wayward-lives [Stucky, 2k words, Explicit]
The last time he'd seen Bucky he'd looked unhealthy, with pallid skin and greasy, lanky hair. Now, Bucky shone; his hair was thick and silky, his skin a deep bronze from spending so much time outside. He was softer, too; the hard muscle that used to cover him was now replaced by soft fat, his body still strong, but in a more mundane way. His thighs were thicker, his ass plumper, and when he'd pulled Steve into the river Steve had noticed the pudge on his stomach.
Seeing Bucky so happy, well-fed and shining, was a bit of a kick in the face. For all the years they'd known each other, he'd never seen Bucky so... care-free. Now that Bucky was putting on weight, his middle soft and his body malleable, it sent a bolt of arousal through Steve every time he noticed the curves of Bucky's body.
Or: Bucky put on a bit of weight in Wakanda, and Steve is Not Coping.
🌻 Revive Another Side of Me by dontcallmebree @iamthe-wo-manwhocan [Stucky, 1k words, Mature]
Steve’s never lived in a world without Bucky, and he’s not living now. It takes them a while, much too long, to get that awaited rest, a little slice of peace after the dust has settled.Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes are inseparable, history remembers. But they’re not men of the past quite yet.
🌻 imagine being loved by me by spacebuck @spacebuck [Stucky, 20k words, Explicit]
Just after 1am - a few hours after he posted today’s photo - he hears the tell-tale sound of a twitter message. Bucky grabs his phone, not checking who it’s from as he opens it because it’s probably one of his mutuals yelling at him as per usual. When he actually looks at his phone, though, it’s not Natasha
The ‘verified’ check stares back at him for a long moment before he can even bring himself to process the name on his screen. Steve Rogers is messaging him. Or, he reasons, a very good fake. The handle looks right though, not that Bucky knows. Not that Bucky has Captain’s America’s tweets set up as notifications, or that Bucky’s own display name is set to captain america’s bitch. Not at all.
Hey, the first message says. It’s Steve.
🌻 JB’s Complete Lube Services by dixons_mama @dixons-mama [Stucky, 3k words, Explicit]
People just didn’t approach Captain America and proposition him. Although, sometimes Steve wished they would; even the pinnacle of virtue and justice needed to get dicked down from time to time.
Or, the one where Steve has the hots for a mechanic and decides to be proactive in getting that dick.
If it had to be someone by rainbow_nerds [Stucky, 1k words, Mature]
Bucky had known since he was a child that he didn’t have a choice in who he married, but he’d thought he had more time before the day arrived.
Miscalculations by christywantspizza @christywantspizza [Ransom Drysdale/Reader, 6k words, Explicit]
Ransom tries to get you to sleep with him by less than honorable means. You give him what he wants, just not how he wants it.
How to Seduce a Writer by obsessivereader [Stucky, 2k words, Teen]
What's a determined master strategist going to do when the oblivious writer he's trying to woo keeps missing all the clues?
He doesn’t think it’s because he hadn’t signaled his own interest to Bucky. He’s pretty much done everything short of hitting Bucky over the head with semaphore flags by this point. There’s no way Bucky could’ve missed them. Unless… There’d been that one link he’d stumbled upon when he’d googled ‘how to talk to a writer’. It’d been written by a writer, who’d been candid about how oblivious writers could be, and how someone could go about seducing one. An idea starts to form. It’s ridiculous, but at this point, he’s willing to go with ridiculous, since subtle wasn’t getting him anywhere.
🌻 Pod Bless America by Deisderium @deisderium [Stucky, 6k words, Teen]
Bucky can't believe his favorite podficcer recorded his newest fanfic AU of the show Commandos. He's even more surprised when the customer who busts him listening to fic while he's working in the office supply store turns out to be that podficcer.
* The guy—maybe bi_shield?—took his phone, looked down at the screen, and smiled. "Yeah, that one's mine," he said with no evidence of embarrassment. "It was a good one." He handed the phone back to Bucky.
"I wrote it," Bucky croaked.
take a bite by wearing_tearing [Stucky, 7k words, Mature]
"I’d never let anyone freeze to death.” Steve gives a big sigh and flutters his lashes. “All that blood gone to waste.”
Bucky’s lips turn down and his nose scrunches up a little. “I want to be grossed out, but…”
“But you get it.” Steve gives him a pointed look. “Vampires aren’t the only ones who can appreciate how juicy blood is.”
*
Or: Vampire Steve saves newly-turned werewolf Bucky from a snowstorm.
Leaving the Shield Behind by BuckyAboveEverything [Stucky, 6k words, Teen]
“So, on one hand, we have Steve Rogers - hunk, genius, animal lover. Buys you waffles and overpriced coffee. 100% wholesome all-American boy.”
“And, on the other hand, we have Capsicle – twink, smart-ass, fanboy. Reads your stories and sends you fanart. Possibly a pervert or a serial killer.”
Bucky groaned.
“I am 100% certain I am 0% sure of what to do."
Bucky Barnes, full-time copywriter and free-time fanfic writer, struggles to choose between two equally-attractive suitors, only to find that he doesn’t have to after all.
* Based on a true story *
Cap's Book Corner by Neche [Stucky, 2k words, Teen]
Recluse Author Bucky Barns stumbles into fanboy Steve Rogers bookstore one day...
Cat Nap by galwednesday @galwednesday [Stucky, 8k words, Teen]
Objectively, losing the Bucharest safehouse and its contents was the least of Bucky’s problems. The balding agent he’d seen directing the raid was apparently affiliated with SHIELD, which was a shadowy government agency that made representatives from other shadowy government agencies suddenly remember urgent appointments when Bucky tried to bribe, threaten, and otherwise shake them down for information on what the hell SHIELD might want with a former brainwashed assassin. Dodging SHIELD should be his number one priority.
Subjectively, he wanted his fucking cat back.
at any given moment by honeypuffed [Stucky, 1k words, Teen]
Steve and Bucky find out that everyone thinks they're sleeping together.
Brought to Brightness by eyres [Stucky, 10k words, Teen]
Army veteran Bucky Barnes has fallen in love with Steve, a guy he met online a few months after he returned from Afghanistan. Only problem is, he doesn't know Steve's last name or even what he looks like.
When his sister helps him send his story into MTV's Catfish, he's hoping they can help him meet Steve or, at least, let him move on with his life if Steve isn't real. Little does he know, Steve and Captain America have more in common than just a first name.
🌻 Nokken Wood by leveragehunters @leveragehunters [Stucky, 10k words, Teen]
When Sam's friend needs a house-sitter for his place in the country, Steve jumps at the chance. Six months rent-free to do nothing but draw and paint and wander the countryside, looking for inspiration? It was like a dream. But when he gets lost in a storm and nearly falls into a pond he starts to rethink the whole like a dream aspect of life in the country. And when a red-eyed, sharp-clawed, silver-fanged creature rises out of the darkness, Steve is one hundred percent certain the dream's morphed into a nightmare.
...until it gives him a cup of tea.
(Inspired partly by this prompt a supernatural creature is supposed to scare you but instead it gives you a cup of tea and a blanket because you're having a bad day and you keep coming back and partly by this painting.)
Professional Pride by galwednesday [Stucky, 700 words, Teen]
Bucky is having a very good day, until he turns around and finds himself face-to-face with Captain America.
“Oh shit,” he blurts before he can stop himself, and Captain America blinks at him. “Hey, hi, I didn’t expect to see you here.” Here, at New York’s Pride parade, surrounded by thousands of happy screaming people wearing rainbows and sometimes not much else. What is he doing here? Is he on guard duty or something? Was he just on a mission and happened to be passing by on his way back?
He’s in uniform but with the cowl loose around his neck, so when he rubs the back of his head it fluffs up his matted hair. “I, uh. I saw one of your–temporary tattoos?” Captain fucking America says, like it’s a question.
The A-bridged Guide to Trolling by galwednesday [Stucky, 1k words, Teen]
“I don’t have any money.”
Oh no, now the girl looked upset. Her eyes were huge and her lip was wobbling. Bucky tried to think fast despite the oh shit oh shit oh shit looping through his head.
“That’s okay,” Bucky said gently. I don’t need money. We can figure out another kind of toll.”
The girl frowned at him. “Like what?”
Bucky scratched his head, trying to think of something a kid was certain to have on hand. “Do you know any jokes?”
(Fantasy AU in which Steve is a hedge witch with a green thumb, Bucky is a bridge troll who's new in town, and knock-knock jokes are a viable form of currency.)
It's a bittersweet ending (if you know what I mean) by relenafanel [Stucky, 1k words, Teen]
“I’ll see you around, Steve,” Bucky answers with a smirk, moving away from the counter with a wink.
Steve watches him go. Bucky’s wearing a pair of skinny jeans coated in something to give the appearance of leather. It’s impossible to not watch him go.

“Bucky? You don’t look so hot.”
Bucky makes a tiny little sound in the back of his throat, only to start coughing. Of course he doesn’t look hot. He’s sick and he’s dying and Steve obviously isn’t attracted to him.

It took the Winter Soldier three weeks to remember that human beings needed to sleep and eat.
It took Steve far too long to realise the Winter Soldier was sleeping in his bed.

Bucky can’t decide if Steve’s a tough nut to crack or incredibly easy. The timbre of his voice, a low and almost amused, “Sure, kid,” when Bucky asks for a drink feels like something gripping him on the back of his neck.
He thinks this might be one of those moments in life he’ll pinpoint in the future and either curse at for dooming himself, or remember fondly with pride.

Hulker gelato is a transmasc king and we love that for him
We do!
When I made the au (inspired by @dicksoutformtl's ask) I honest to god thought hulders could be male but apparently they're traditionally an entirely female species.
Now poor Gelato is basically playing on hard mode because on top of the normal shit hulders have to do to hide their backs he's also got to navigate passing. I like to think he would have found some magical method of changing his body, so now his main problem is explaining himself to other hulders.
Funny thought, but what if Gelato had a lifelong hatred of Nokken because he was jealous of the fact they could shapeshift so easily? Lol, imagine being a hulder and discovering the new husband you were planning on killing after marriage is not only a) not a human but b) the one fucking creature you hated in particular.
Man just spends the first 6 months of this marriage he now can't leave sulking next to a lake.

i love this, cant wait for more chapters
idk why but i always make my mcs badass and stoic but somehow here i just couldn't bc it wouldn't feel righttt
my mc is like a kind hearted sad girl whos been living as a monster because of her past life and hates it (hows that not sad)
the self destructive tendencies tho, after i made her kiss shae and he rejected, she ran to elexis (she was a virgin, in this life probably 🤷🏻‍♀️)
honestly idk but could we get like a dialogue where the mc regrets sleeping with elexis? just a thought
anywayy, continuing. when shae was in her room and she went through his bestiary and on the last page she saw the drawing image of her helspawn (shes a nokken btw)
and i clicked the option dread, that actually hurt my heart idkk LMAO
i imagine in the future like shae and the mc arguing bc she likes him bc hes like the only person she has had since her new life and he keeps rejecting her so she comes to the conclusion: "I get it, you view me the same monster as they all do"
lmaooo, sorry for the long rant i was bored and had nobody to tell abt this amazing new IF ive discovered (i also love angst and pain)
Thank you lmao, glad to hear you enjoyed it! :-)
Though it does sound like you played the old version of the game, which unfortunately won't be updated any more. If you want to check out the rewrite, you can do so here. ^^

The Tale of Princess Kaguya and The Wind Rises?
The Tale of Princess Kaguya: What folktale/wives tale from your childhood stuck with you your whole life?
Definetly Näkki and some version of Bluebeard my mom read to me !!! Näkki/nokken/other spellings is the watercreature my mom spooked me with as a kid to make sure I didn't go near waters alone; she described it as being the size of the lake, and I always imagined it being similiar to those pancake looking fish.
As for Bluebeard- it was a version where the girl picks up a ring from a vat of blood and can't wash the blood away. For some reason I also recall someone getting tarred & feathered, or being a bird creature, but I'm not sure if some memory is getting mixed up there?
The Wind Rises: Tell me about your greatest accomplishment.
A lot of it is personal stuff that has 2 do w mental health in a way that I'm uncomfortable saying, but in general, I'm just kinda proud that I'm better now and that I worked pretty hard for it!!! I can leave the house without shutting down and stuff im :') just so glad I get to experience the life that I didn't even realize was out there.
✨Studio Ghibli Asks!✨

Anonymous requested a Hulder/Huldra or Nøkken theme! I decided the nokken art I found fit better with the theme of my blog than the huldur stuff, so that’s the theme I’m going with today.
The nokken are shapeshifting water spirits in Germanic folklore, often appearing as a man, dragon, mermaid, or horse depending on the country. They are known by many names including neck, nicor, nix, nixie, nixy, nokken, nixe, nikker, nekker, nøkke, nøkken, näck, näkki, and näkk.
Tumblr media
They are best known in Scandinavian folklore, so I’ll focus on that for the background, but you can read the folklore from other countries here.
Tumblr media
The Scandinavian näcken, näkki, nøkk were male water spirits who played enchanted songs on the violin, luring women and children to drown in lakes or streams. However, not all of these spirits were necessarily malevolent; many stories indicate at the very least that nøkker were entirely harmless to their audience and attracted not only women and children, but men as well with their sweet songs.
Tumblr media
Though often imagined as fair and naked today, in folklore he was more frequently described as wearing elegant clothing, but also could appear to be treasure or various floating objects, or an animal—most commonly in the form of a brook horse.
Tumblr media
The nøkk was also an omen for drowning accidents. He would scream at a particular spot in a lake or river, and on that spot, a fatality would later take place. He was also said to cause drownings, but swimmers could protect themselves against such a fate by throwing a bit of steel into the water.

The elementals
Thinking about the upcoming movie of Frozen II, I noticed we have ALL THE FOUR ELEMENTS where Elsa’s party is going. We have that purple fire, the water horse, a giant which I bet is made of rocks according to how its steps sounds, and the naughty magic wind.
Tumblr media
Let’s put aside the question of how Elsa fits in all that group (I think it’s a group given all the stuff about four types of symbols everywhere) since she is Winter (air and water), what I was wondering about is... how this people... or creatures... or whatever... would be?
The purple wildfire
Let’s say it, it’s one of the most worrying ones. It’s the only one which has proved openly agressive. We don’t even know if there is a person or something behind the fire, its natural form could be the one we saw. Like a thinking purple wildfire from Game of Thrones. Can you imagine? The personality, well... I imagine something/somebody with anger issues. It’s like the main thing on fire beings.
The giant/troll/whatever they are going to call it
We only saw the shape and size on the trailer. We didn’t even get to know if it’s agressive. I think it’s the Earth one, basing myself on the sound of the steps that creature/being/no idea made, which sounded like a stone colossus. Maybe it’s kind of friendly. MAYBE. Or it could be a little like Elsa’s former goon.
The Nokk
This one worries me as well as the purple wildfire. According to the norse mythology, nokks or nokkens are manipulative and vengative, and attract people to drown them, which sounds very creepy and ominous (that appears on every version of acuatic horses, appart of the shape-shifting thing to attract the people to drown them), but on the other hand, the information leaked about what it is, says that is a creature that lives on the water and protects the forest and its secrets and that it sends people on nearly impossible tasks to prove they are worthy of its respect. I don’t know guys, but that can go by the hand of “manipulative and vengative”.
This one has a high chance of being as important to the plot as dangerous.
The Magic Wind
We watched it send someone flying, but at the same time there was a little girl who acted like it was something normal, like, whaever o whoever (we don’t know if there is a person or creature behind this magic wind either) made it was a friend. It made think of Aang, from Avatar: the last airbender, on the firsts chapters, cheerful, reckless, carefree... It could become a friend of the party, since it appears that much on the tittle of the movie.

Monsters and Mythological Creatures
So, someone asked about monsters, and since I’ve been hoarding this long list of mythical beings for one of my own stories for the last like, three years, I decided to finally share it! This list is divided into categories for specific types of creatures. Each creature is accompanied by a definition or description, where it’s from, and other useful information.
Here we go:
SPIRITS AND GHOSTS:
Arae(Greek Mythology): Female spirits of curses, particularly curses that are placed by the dead, on the person responsible for their death.
Banshee(Gaelic Lore): A female spirit who brings death to her victim by screeching or wailing. Often depicted wearing green or red robes, with hair being described as either orange, red or yellow to mimic the flicker of flames. Can appear as a young beautiful women, or an old and frightening ‘hag’
Black Dog/Hell Hounds: Usually depicted as large, ghostly looking black dogs that come from hell. Typically, they roam the streets at night looking for pray to drag back to hell or devour.
Bogle(Gaelic Lore): A ghost like being whose sole purpose is to frighten and confuse humans and other creatures.
(El) Coco/  Cucuí (Typically Hispanic or Latin american Folklore) : A ghost like monster, much like the american boogeyman, used to strike fear into children. The description changes among different cultures. Sometimes described as ghosts with pumpkin heads, as large rattling skeletons, a female humanoid alligator like creature, or even a dragon like creature. (as a child, I imagined them more like skeleton ghosts)
Demons : Malevolent spirits from Hell
Fox Spirits (Popular among Asian Folklore) : The Fox Spirit or the Nine Tailed Fox is a common spirit among east Asian cultures, usually depicted as a familiar with great magic power. They are often devious or mischievous, with a bad habit of tricking people. Usually, they are also capable of shape shifting into beautiful women. They can be a good, or a bad omen. Known as the  húli jīng (fox spirit) in China, the kitsune (fox) in Japan, and the kumiho (nine-tailed fox) in Korea.
Gashadokuro(Japanese Mythology): Spirits of people who died of starvation or in battle, and did not receive a proper burial. They take the form of massive skeletons, apparently 15 times taller then the average human. They roam the world after midnight, capturing lone travelers, and biting off their heads to drink their blood. They are said to be invisible and invincible. Though they can be warded off with  Shinto charms, and it’s said you can sense their presence if you hear a loud ringing in your ear.
Ghosts: Spirits of the undead that are trapped in the world of the living. Often resemble what they looked like alive, can be good, bad or neutral.
Grim Reaper: The Physical embodiment of death, arrives to take your soul to the after life.
Hulder or Huldra (Scandanvian Folklore) : Beautiful, seductive, female forest spirits that are primarily human with the exception of having a cows tail. Apparently come from beneath the earth, sometimes claimed to be a forgotten child of adam and eve. They are known as coal kindles, they would watch the fires of travelers while they slept, and ensure they would not go out. Males of this species are said to be hideous, with grotesquely long noses.
Ifrit (Middle Eastern): A death spirit believed to be drawn in by the life force or blood of the murdered. They tend to be fiery in nature(literally), and are said to either take the form of the deceased they were attracted to, or the form of Satan himself. Can be good or evil or neutral, but mainly considered to be malevolent, vengeful, evil, ruthless, or wicked.
Ittan-momen (Japanese Mythology): Now, this one sounds pretty harmless, but do not be fooled. Ittan-Momen is a sentient roll of cotton that flies through the air at night, and attacks and kills people by smothering them.
Incubus: No, I do not mean the Rock Band. An Incubus is a male demon that lies upon it’s victim, and supposedly steals their life force by having repeated sex with them. Their female counterpart is called a succubus.
Jinn (Arabian and Islamic mythology and theology) : Jinn, or more popularly known in western culture; the Genie, is a powerful spirit with free will, and thus can be good, evil, or neutral. Usually depicted with no spiritual form, or as humans with different animal parts, or as shadowy ghosts. Jinn play many different roles in different cultures. They are often seen as living in a parallel world to the human world.
Keres (Greek Mythology) : Daughters of the goddess Nyx, spirits of violent or unpeaceful death.
Kobalos (Greek Mythology) : Depicted as small, mischievous creatures that took to messing with people. They often pranked, frightened, or stole from people. In myth, they stole from Heracles while he slept. In one version, he gives them away as a present to the Lydian Queen. In another version, he forgives them, and lets them off the hook simply because he finds them amusing.  Greek myths depict the kobaloi as "impudent, thieving, droll, idle, mischievous, gnome-dwarfs", and as "funny, little triksy elves" of a phallic nature. So they’re essentially annoying yet sort of funny gnome/elf/dwarves that resemble erect penises. Isnt mythology fun.
La Llorona aka The Weeping Women (Popular in northern and southern american folklore) : Usually the Ghost of either a women who was scorned by a man, and now she hunts for other awful men. Or, the Ghost of a women who cries as she searches for her dead children. The most traditional or typical story tells of a women who drowns her children in the river out of spite when her husband leaves her for a younger women. After realizing her children are dead, and she can not find them, she drowns herself as well. In the after life, she is not permitted to move onto heaven. Her soul will not be able to find peace until she finds her children, and thus she is doomed to wander the earth in search of them. In some stories, she will take lone children that resemble her own, and drown them in the river so they can take her children's place.
Lamia(Greek Mythology) : A beautiful queen of Lybia. It’s said that she was a mistress of Zues. In one version, Zues’ Jealous wife Hera steals all of Lamias children, and turns her into a demon that hunts and devours others children. Other versions say that Hera killed all of Lamias children, and driven by the grief and suffering of her loss, goes insane, and starts stealing and eating others children out of envy. The repeated horrid act turns her into a monster. There is also a myth that Hera forced her to eat her own children, then cursed her to never be able to close her eyes, so that the image of her children's death will forever haunt her. Zues later grants her the ability to remove her eyes to appease her grief. In some descriptions, she has serpent like features, or the lower half of a snake. In others, her face is distorted. No matter the story however, it’s Hera’s fault.
Lares (Roman Mythology) : House hold or guardian spirits that each family traditionally has around their grounds. Statues of domestic Lares were typically placed at the table for family meals. Their presence and worship seemed to be very important.
Mare(Germanic or slavic Folklore) : a Ghost/ Spirirt or Goblin that sits on the chest of sleeping victims, and forces nightmares upon them. Other legends depict them as beautiful women that go into the dreams of men and seduce them before killing them. I personally prefer the sitting goblins.
Neck or Nokken (Germanic and Scandinavian Folklore) : Water Spirits usually depicted as a a shadowy monster lurking in the water, it’s eyes just above the surface. Other times, it’s described as a beautiful young man playing the fiddle or violin while resting in the water. Their enchanting songs drew women, men and children to them. Sometimes they are said to be peaceful, and will simply play for the humans, or possibly even move into the home of one who has fallen in love with them (though they often do not stay long), and sometimes they are said to lure people to their death with their beautiful song. Don’t know about you, but I would totally take a cute guy playing the violin underneath a water fall over a creepy water submerged shadow, any day.
Nymph (Greek Mythology) : Minor Nature Gods or spirits that tend to animate nature, and are viewed as beautiful, and free young (typically) women. There are several different types of Nymphs; Celestial Nymphs, Land Nymphs, Wood or Forest Nymphs, Plant/Flower Nymphs, Water Nymphs, and Underworld Nymphs. The most common are Dryads, that are Nymphs of the trees. Naiads, which are fresh Water Nymphs(ponds, fountains, springs, etc), and Auras which are basically air nymphs, or breezes.
Poltergeist: (German for Noisy Spirit or Noisy Ghost) A Ghost that is capable of physicaly capable of sitrubing the human world. They are known for hitting, biting, pinching, scratching and tripping humans. They are also known for moving or levitating objects, and making loud knocking sounds.
Sprites: Elemental, fairy like beings that are invisible to humans. Can be good or evil or neutral. Sylphs are sprites dedicate solely to the element of Air.
Tikoloshe (Zulu Mythology) : A goblin, or dwarf like water spirit that can become invisible by drinking water. It is regarded as mischievous and evil. They can be called upon to cause trouble or to harm others. Best case scenario, they scare kids. Worst case scenario, they can bring you serious illness or even death. It’s usually described as a gremlin like demon with gauged out eyes.
HALF HUMAN/ HUMANOID CREATURES:
Aeternae: Creatures who supposedly attacked Alexander the Great, and killed many of his men with their bony, saw like protuberances that came from their head.
Asanbosam (West African Folklore) : Hairy, ogre like vampiric creatures with iron teeth and iron hooks for feet. They live in the trees, and attack their victims from above.
Adze (Ewe Folklore) : Another vampire like being in the form of a firefly, but will transform into a human if captured. In human form, they will possess people. People who are possessed are thought to be witches, and the people around the possessed with be affected negatively. As a firefly, they can phase through doors, and will suck the blood of sleeping people. The victims will eventually fall ill and die.
Bisimbi Bi Masa (African Folklore) : Water Nymphs that reside in the Congo. They’re described as beautiful and seductive spirits that live in natural watery areas. They are known to cause awful skin diseases, which only their own haunting cries can cure. Which is weirdly twisted and cool?
Brownies(Scottish FolkLore): Small, humanoid like creatures that sneak into peoples houses at night to do chores in exchange for their favorite foods. They will stop tending to a house if the owner misues them, or if their gifts of food are instead called payment.
Changeling: A fairy infant left in the place of a human infant that was kidnapped by fairies.
Centaur (Greek Mythology) : Upper half of a man, lower half of a horse. Wild and free creatures, that tend to be good in nature. The most popular is Chiron, who was refered to as the wisest and most just of all centaurs. He trained the some of the most famous greek Heroes, such as; Achilles, Jason, Perseus, Theseus, Ajax, and some stories portray him training Heracles as well. There are several different types of Centaurs;  Ichthyocentaurs, which are centaurs who have the tails of fish, Winged Centaurs, Onocentaur which has the bottom half of a donkey, rather then a horse,  Cyprian Centaurs, which are bull-horned centaurs,  Lamian Centaurs, which had Ox horns.
Cyclops(Greek Mythology) : Giant One eyed humanoid monsters that typically captured and ate people. Legend says no one was able to escape or hurt them.
Dwarf: A Short, stocky, scraggly looking humanoids that typically live underground in mining communities.
Elf: A race of humanoid creatures who typically have pointy ears, and excel in magic.
Empusa (Greek Mythology) : A demigod or monster that drinks the blood and eating the flesh of sleeping men. They are depicted with flaming hair, and are said to have one bronze leg, and one leg of a donkey.
Erinyes or Furies (Greek Mythology) : Female deities of vengeance, there are typically three of them;  Alecto or Alekto ("endless"), Megaera ("jealous rage"), and Tisiphone or Tilphousia ("vengeful destruction"). They are depicted in several different ways. Sometime they are said to have snakes for hair, or dogs heads in place of human heads. Sometimes their skin or eyes are said to be as black as coal, and sometimes they are portrayed with bat wings. Their victims die in torture, and they are more ancient then most of the Olympian gods themselves.
Fairy: Humanoids with great magical abilities. Legends and myths about fairies vary greatly from culture to culture. They are not always good. They have free will, and are often mischievous. Never trust a fairy.
Futakuchi-onna (Japanese Mythology) : A women with two mouths. One where it normally should be, and a second, fully functioning mouth on the back of her head, beneath her hair. It’s said that the hair parts, and the skull splits open into a mouth, and demands food. If it is not fed, it will shriek, and cause the women awful pain. This myth is apparently derived from ‘how little women eat’.
Gegenees (Greek Mythology) : Six Armed Giants
Gnome :  A small, humanoid creature who lives and moves beneath the earth. I once had a whole book on gnomes, and this thing was written like they were observing some kind of animal?? Like they talked about Gnomes like they were real creatures and I was entirely shook. Did you know Gnomes only gave birth to twins? Cause I didnt. There was a whole section on the sex lives and birthing system of gnomes. I’ll never unsee that section. I gave the book to my friend, cause I’m 99% sure she’s a gnome. Never piss off a Gnome.
Goblin : A  grotesque, troublesome little creature with a strong greed for gold and jewels. Very Mischievous. Goblin is probably still one of my favorite words. Say it ten times, really fast, do it.
Golem(Jewish Folklore) : A humanoid(ish) like creature made from clay, mud, or stone that is magically animated.
Gorgon (Greek Mythology) : The snake haired (and sometimes snake-bodied) women who could turn people to stone just by looking at them. The most Famous being Medusa.
Graeae (Greek Mythology) : Three old women who shared one tooth and one eye among them. They took turn using it. In mythology, Perseus held their eye for ransom until they told him the whereabouts of the items he needed to kill Medusa.
Harpies( Greek Mythology) : Half bird, half human, embodiment of storm winds. They typically swooped down and dragged away (bad) humans, and carried them to their punishment.
Hecatoncheires (Greek Mythology); Because those guys with the six arms just arent enough, let me introduce you to Hecatoncheires, aka the hundred handed ones. That’s right. One Hundred Hands. They also have fifty heads, and have unimaginable strength. Thankfully, there are only three of these guys.
Hobgoblin : A type of Brownie who is inherently less helpful and more mischievous, even to the point of causing harm if antagonized.
Imp : Small, mischievous creatures who liked to play pranks on people.
Jorōgumo (Japanese Mythology): A spirit that can shape-shift into a beautiful women. Often Depicted as being half pretty lady, half terrifying spider. She’s sometimes shown controlling small, fire breathing spiders. This is the thing of my nightmares; a hot lady who turns into a partial spider, that controls other, smaller spiders that breath fire. Because pretty girls arent intimidating enough, you gotta go and mix them with spiders, right?
Manticore ( Persian Folklore) : Head of a human, body of a lion, tail of a poisonous porcupine, or a scorpion.
Mermaids  and Sirens : Sea creatures with the head and torso of a woman and the tail of a fish. Sometimes good, sometimes evil. The evil ones are known for (sometimes singing) and luring sailors to their deaths, and dragging them down to the bottom of the ocean to devour them.
Minotaur  (Greek Mythology): The creature with the head and legs of a bull and the torso of a man, who guarded the exit to The Labyrinth.
Moirai (Greek Mythology): The Fates. There are three of them, typically seen in white robes, and are the incarnation of Destiny. They control the thread of life for everything. They ensured the birth, life, and death of everything. Every being was at their control.
Ogre : An ugly, oversized humanoid creature with great physical strength and little intelligence. No shrek jokes, please, None.
Orc : A large, ugly humanoid similar to Goblins. They tend to be evil, brutish, aggressive and repulsive monsters. Though they are based off many other mythical beings, Orcs stem more from J.R.R Tolkeins books, and rise in fantasy games like Dungeons and Dragons and World of Warcraft.
Penanggalan (South East Asian FolkLore) : a detached female head that fly's about on its own. As it flies, the stomach and entrails dangle below it, which apparently are apparently hit by the night light in such a way that makes them appear like fireflies.. During the day, it appears as a normal, human women. It’s said to usually be caused by witchcraft of pacts with demons.
Pixie :  A small humanoid creature with pointy ears who likes to cause mischief.
Sasquatch : Large, hairy, man-like beasts that live in the woods. Types of Sasquatch include Bigfoot, and the Yeti.
Satyr :Half-men, half-goats who were wild, lustful, and all around fun. The god Pan was one of these. Pan was the god of the wild, and apparently liked to scare the crap out of people in the forest, and that’s where the word panic comes from.
Scorpion Man : They have another name, but it’s way long, and I can’t find it right now. But they’re men who have the head and torso of a human, and the lower half of a scorpion. They are featured in the Babylonian version of The Epic of Gilgamesh.
Shapeshifters :Humans who can willingly take the form of any animal. Honestly, the idea of shape-shifting has always weirded me out. Because honestly, it sounds painful. Like, if you shape shift into something much smaller and structurally different then you, say, a bird for example, where do your bones go? Like, i figure some of your bones shrink or stretch with you to fit the animal, but some animals don’t have the exact same amount of bones as humans, so like, where do the bones go?? I’ve been asking this since I was like then, I have received no answers. I am concerned.
Sirens : Man-eating beautiful women whose song compels men to them. Not always mermaid like creatures. Sometimes depicted as fully human, or as partially bird like.
Sphinx(Greek Mythology) : The half-human, half-lion that forces those it meets to answer its     riddles, or die. In the story of Oedipus, the riddle it gives is “What is the creature that walks on four legs in the morning, two legs at noon and three in the evening?” the answer to which is Humans. As we crawl on all fours as infants, on two legs for most of our lives, and with a cane in our old age.
Valkyries (Norse Mythology) : female divinities who choose people who died a heroic death in battle, and then guide them to Valhalla.
Vampire: Probably one of the most famous of monsters. The undead human like creature that drinks the blood of the living.
Wendigo/ Windigo ( Algonquian folklore) : A monster or spirit that is associated with Cannibalism, murder, and greed.  They are often seen as either Humans turned into monsters by their sins, or humans that are possessed by evil spirits. Wendigos are associated with winter, wilderness, cold, cannibalism, greed, murder, famine, and starvation. They are often depicted with human, deer, or tree like features to imitate the wilderness.
WereWolf: Yet another Classic. A human being who transforms into a wolf, or a wolf-human hybrid creature either by night, or by the full moon.
Wraith(Scottish/ Gaelic folklore): Evil Spirits who can not pass on, and torment the living. Usually depicted as Shadow like figures.
Zombies: The animated undead, rotting corpses who consume the flesh of the living.
ANIMAL AND BEAST LIKE MONSTERS:
Airavata (Hindu Mythology) : The Mythical white elephant that carries the Hindu God Indrua. It is said to be spotless white, have five trunks and ten tusks.
Basilisk : A legendary reptile who could kill a man with its stare, it’s said to be hatched by a chicken from a reptilian egg.
Bake-kujira (Japanese mythology) : The ghostly skeleton of a dead whale that surfaces the water. It’s said that it’s presence brings a curse to either the area it’s seen, or to anyone who spots it.
Catoblepas (Greek Mythology/Ethiopia) : A creature from Ethiopia, resembling that of a buffalo or a wilder beast. It’s always looking downward, because it’s head is too heavy. In some descriptions, it’s gaze could kill you, and in others, it only ate poison vegetation, that made it’s breath poisonous as well.
Cerastes (Greek Mythology) : A serpant so flexible, it had no spine. It’s depicted as either having two large ram horns, or as having four small horns. It’s said to hide in the sand, with only it’s horns peeking through the surface, waiting for unsuspecting Prey to approach it.
Chupacabra (Latin American Folk Lore) : A monster known for feeding off of livestock, especially goats. It’s name translates to ‘Goat Sucker’. The two most common descriptions of El Chupacabre are that of a strange wild dog that is mainly hairless, with a prominent spinal ridge, sunken in eyes, and large fangs and claws. The other descriptions shows it as a large reptilian creature with leathery or scaly green/gray skin, and sharp porcupine like needles going down it’s spine.  Unlike most predators, El Chupacabre drains it’s pray off their blood, and sometimes their organs, rather then eating the flesh.
Cerberus(Greek Mythology) :The three-headed dog that guards the entrance to Hades. It’s name is supposedly derived from the greek word for ‘Spotted’ or ‘Spot’. The capturing of Cerberus is claimed to be the final, and most difficult task of Heracles 12 trials.
Chimera (Greek Mythology): A monstrous hybrid that was Part-lion, part-goat, part-snake. In some descriptions, it has the head of all three, in others, it has the head of the lion and the goat, the lions body with the goat hooves, and a snake for a tail. In another description, it might be the head of one, the body of another, and the tail of the other. It’s really one big game of mix and match. Sometimes they also breath fire or have wings.
Cockatrice :A flying creature that is part-rooster and part snake that could supposedly kill with it’s stare. It’s said to be hatched by a reptile from a chickens egg. Pretty much the opposite of the Basilisk.
Dragon : Giant, flying, fire-breathing reptiles that are known for stealing and hording treasure. There are many, many different types of dragons that range from culture to culture. I could probably make a whole different post, just on the different types of dragons.
Griffin  : A creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. Sometimes, it also has the tail of a snake. Griffins are popular among several different cultural mythologies.
Hippalectryon (Greek Mythology) : An odd hybrid of a horse and a chicken. It’s front half is the horse, its back half is the chicken, including tail and wings. There is no solid idea of why such a myth exists. Some say it’s a creature of Poseidon, and meant to protect ships, others say it’s just a grotesque hybrid to amuse children. Some say it’s a pointless creature with no real purpose other then for decoration. Why else would someone make a rooster horse?
Hippocampus (Greek Mythology) : A sea creature with the upper body of a horse, and the lower body of  a fish. So, it is yet another odd horse hybrid from greek mythology.
Hippogriff (Greek Mythology): Because there’s no such thing as too many weird horse hybrids, meet the Hippogriff. Which has the front half and wings on an eagle, and the back half of a horse.
Huallepen (South American Folklore): A weird creature that lurks in lakes and ponds. It has the body of a (usually hairless) sheep, the head of a calf, and the twisted feet of a seal. It only comes out at night, and it’s said that if a pregnant women sees one, her child will come out with a muzzle and twisted limbs.
Hydra (Greek Mythology) : The giant nine-headed serpent who grew two new heads for every one that was cut of. The task of killing this beast was given to Heracles during his twelve trials. The only way to kill it, without it’s head growing back, was to smash the heads, and then catch them on fire.
Ladon (Greek Mythology)  : The large snake like dragon that wrapped itself around the tree of golden apples in the garden of the Hesperides. Apparently slain by Heracles.
Isonade (Japanese Mythology) : An enormous, shark like sea monster that hides beneath the waves in the oceans of Japan. It’s massive hook like tail and it’s fins are covered in sharp barbs.
Nemean Lion (Greek Mythology) : The giant lion with impenetrable hide. This creature is killed by Heracles during his twelve trials, he later wears the skin of the creature as an indestructible cloak.
Kamaitachi (Japanese Mythology) : Also known as the sickle weasels. These mischievous creatures are thought of as either wind spirits, or spirits that ride in on dust devils. They slash as people with their long, sickle like nails.
Kappa (Japanese Mythology) : Typically means ‘River Child’, these creatures are demons or imps that reside in the fresh water. They are often described as having a pool of water above their hand, that reflects their habitat and their own life force and their power. They are said to be about the size of a child, and somewhat human like in figure, with reptile like scales, a shell,  a beak, and webbed hands and feet. They are usually either green, yellow or blue. Kappa are used to warn children about the dangerous of wandering near the water alone, as legends say the creatures will lure people to water before dragging them in and drowning them. They’re also said to peak up women's skirts, play pranks on human, attack humans, and even eat human flesh. All around, probably safe to stay away from Kappas.
Kraken (Norse Mythology) : A famous gigantic sea monster that’s known for attacking and sinking ships. It’s often depicted as a massive octopus or squid, sometimes with terribly sharp teeth.
Orthros (Greek Mythology) : The lesser known, but probably just as adorable, monster sibling to Cerberus. Orthros is the dog with two heads, instead of three like it’s more famous sibling. It guards the giant Geryon ‘s cattle.
Odontotyrannos: A beast that supposedly killed or incapacitated many of Alexander the Greats men.  it had a black, horse-like head, with three horns protruding from its forehead, and  it exceeded the size of an elephant. Locals apparently called this beat the ‘Tooth-Tyrant’
Ophiotaurus (Greek Mythology) : The Cow Serpent.  So the Greeks gave horses a rest, and made up this thing, which has the upper body of a black bull, and the tail of a serpent. It’s said that whoever could kill this beast and sacrificially burn it’s entrails would gain the power to destroy Olympus and it’s gods.
Pegasus: The Winged Horse.
Phoenix :The golden bird who, at the end of its life, burst into flames only to be reborn again from it’s own ashes.
Thunderbird : The giant bird that creates storms by flapping it’s wings.
Tikbalang (Philippines Folklore) :  A tall, bony humanoid creature with the head and hooves of a horse and disproportionately long limbs, to the point that its knees reach above its head when it squats. It’s said to lurk in the forests and mountains of the Philippines. They like to scare or play tricks on travelers. They can apparently be avoided by wearing your shirt inside out, verbally asking for passage, or being as quite as possible so as not to disturb them.
Unicorn: A magical Horse with a single horn protruding from it’s forehead.
Uchchaihshravas (Hindu Mythology) : A snow white, flying horse with seven heads. It’s said to be the best, or the king of horses.
Yacumama (South American Folklore) : A massive sea serpent believed to live in the mouth of the Amazon river, and near by lagoons. It would apparently suck up and devour anything with in a hundred passes of it. Local natives would blow a large conch shell before entering the water, believing the sound would force the monster to show itself if it was present.
That’s all I’ve got! I hope you liked it, and I hope people find it useful, because honestly, this thing took wayyyyy more time then I thought It would!
If anyone would like to add on any creatures I missed, or if you’d like to add something to any of the creatures that are already on the list, feel free too!
Note: I’ve gone ahead and edited, and added a couple new creatures from African Mythology that someone recommended!

Review: May 2022 Infinity releases
Welcome to Infinity Review, a blog where I review new Infinity miniatures releases. I’ve been playing Infinity and collecting and painting the miniatures for about 10 years, and I love talking about them! I started this blog both to share my thoughts and encourage more discussion about this great miniatures line.
If you’re interested you can find my review criteria here.
Today I’m reviewing the new Infinity May releases. This month we have new models for JSA, Aleph, 0-12 and PanOceana. Plus the Combined Army Bultrak, which I reviewed in a separate post. Lets dig in!
Tumblr media
Bluecoats Adhesive Launcher (0-12/Starmada)
Design (9): The Bluecoat’s design is weird and great. I really like it! Its part space-train conductor and part ninja, with sexy garters just for fun. I imagine the Bluecoat is supposed to look like naval officer, and it does. But he looks so much like a train conductor I can’t get the image out of my head.
Tumblr media
That's fine though, its still cool. What I admire about this design is it really looks like nothing else in Infinity. Even within 0-12 the Bluecoat is pretty unique. That said, he definitely fits right in. The faceless mask looks straight out of Corregidor, and the sleek plated legs could belong to a Ninja, Hexa or a dozen other sneaky operators. Its a great design that expands the Infinity universe while being deeply rooted in it.
Sculpt (9): Typical high quality Corvus Belli sculpting. Everything is sharp and easy to read. I think its worth noting that the smooth surfaces of the mask and leg armor really contrast well with the folds of the coat and the many belts and straps.
Pose (8): The Bluecoat as a pretty typical actiony pivot-at-the-waist-and-shoot pose. It looks just fine, but we’ve seen it so often it no longer stands out. What does stand out are the two enormous guns! Having the Bluecoat hold a giant ADHL in each hand is certainty a statement. It doesn't look bad, but its also... kind of silly? Why does he have two? Is that the kit he chose to bring with him into battle? Did he run into the ship armory and think “one of these just isn’t enough!” With the extra gun on his back, these two huge weapons just look like overkill. But its certainly cool.
Overall score: 8/10

Nokken with Spitfire (PanOceania/Svalarheima’s Winter Force)
Design (8): PanO has an interesting design lineage. More than any other army, you can trace every PanO design back to those very first releases, Fusiliers, Orcs and Akal Sikh Commandos. The Nokken has a lot of elements that would make her fit in with those classic models, like her distinctive PanO boots, chest plate, pants and helmet. The more “winterfied” elements like the jacket, larger backpack and heavy gloves give the Nokken a thematic look that fits in well with the similarly garbed PanO units like the Nisse. Its a simple but attractive design. Plus, the ponytail is a fun addition that adds a little character!
Sculpt (7): A lot of this model’s major elements, like the excellently detailed armored boots and the soft fabric of the pants, look really great. There are several details of the coat that I think just look too chunky. The coat itself is fantastic, with a realistically puffy look that fits well around the model’s body, and provides a great sense of motion that matches the pose. However, the ribbing around the front of the waist just looks too thick to me, and the teeth of the zipper are just too big. I’m sure these elements have been exaggerated both for visibility and ease of painting, but enlarging them makes the model look less realistic and more like toy like. Additionally, many of the fasteners that connect the straps on thighs and jacket look soft and partially formed to me, although that may be a result of the paintjob.
Pose (9): This pose is sharp! The Nokken has a real sense of weight and movement in a pose that isn’t particularly similar to anything we’ve seen recently (as far as I remember). The flaps of the jacket clearly show that the Nokken is rearing back, perhaps ducking around a corner and readying her weapon. The ponytail shows that this is a VERY recent action (Its still catching up because of its weight and length)! Such a great and subtle posing detail that really brings the model to life!
Overall score: 8/10

Marut (Aleph/Cute)
Design (9): I’m a big fan of the original Marut, and I honestly wasn’t sure if a new one could be an improvement. While I don’t think this new design is BETTER than the older version, I do think it stands on its own as a great TAG, and as a sometimes Aleph player I’m excited to have two cool designs to choose from!  The new Marut has a clearly anime inspired look (it reminds me of the mechs from Xenosaga) that manages to be pretty distinct from the game’s other anime-inspired TAGs. Its a great complex design, with clear joints connecting solid but elegant limbs to a sleek torso.  Four arms and wing-like protrusions from the back give the Marut a distinct silhouette. I really appreciate how the model alternates between sharp edges and smooth rounded surfaces, punctuated by seams and recesses for lights. The only element I really don’t love is the head and the syringe like barrels for the Multi-HMG. Both are FINE, but the barrels look just a little weird and the head looks just a little plain. The gold collar seems out of place to me, like it belongs on another model. Maybe I just miss the old model’s bunny ears?
Sculpt (10): As I said above, the juxtaposition of crisp edges and soft curves really makes the Marut stand out. Something I love is looking at the places on a  model where different elements meet and seeing how they fit together. The Marut is full of clean and sensible junctions, and the end result is a highly stylized TAG that still looks like it could believably inhabit its fictional space.
Pose (8): The pose is... fine. The set of the Marut’s shoulders, the turn of it’s head and its slightly lifted knee give it a subtly menacing look, which I think is great. I really wish that something interesting had been done with the Marut’s arms. The model has 4 arms, and that is by far it’s most distinctive and interesting feature. The previous version of the model also had one set of arms clutching its gun, but the other were raised in a close combat pose. This Marut’s second set of arms are just hanging there. While the pose is solid, it’s simplicity feels like wasted opportunity for such a unique model.
Overall score: 9/10

Shinobu Kitsune (JSA)
Design (9): Infiniti’s JSA faction has a history of great designs going back to their early days as part of the Yujing army. This new version if Kitsune preserves some of the very best elements of traditional JSA, even though it doesn’t bring much new to the table. That's okay! This is a banger of a design, even if its mostly replaying past hits. Kitsune looks great with even baggier pants and the addition of the leg armor seen on the Domaru heavy infantry. The big features of this new model are her giant sword and optional hat. I think both are great additions, although I’m pleased to say I think she looks good both with and without the hat!
Sculpt (10): Kitsune is a showcase of great sculpting. Beautiful flowing hair and fabric, finely detailed clothing and a variety of interesting textures. I think the variety of texture really helps this miniature stand out. The armor of her vest and boots are small seam lined surfaces, contrasting with the larger plates of her hip armor. The fiber-muscle of her arms offers a more complicated texture, while her hair stands out as a flowing feature. A variety of texture like this helps a model appear more realistic. Well, “realistic” is not the right word. What I mean is that models that look like they are made out of a variety of things are more often convincing to our minds than models that look like they are made out of one thing. For example, a plain space marine kind of looks like a plastic toy. A space marine with his helmet off exposing his head, or with leather straps holding his gear in place, or with a big felt cape, looks more like an actual thing that might exist. A variety of texture more convincingly places Kitsune within the fictional world of Infinity.
Pose (10): This is a ridiculously awesome pose. Its the kind of pose that gets you to start a whole new army (and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a bunch more JSA armies on the table this Summer). I’ll certainly be using Kitsune as an inspiration to finish up my last few JSA models! The full tilt run, combined with the twist at the waist and the model’s flowing hair and pants gives Kitsune an impressive sense of motion. So much that I’d be desperate to get my models oot of her path even if I didn’t know what she was capable of!
Overall score: 9.6/10
