A Local Delicacy
or the fic where hobie stares at pav and misses all the vital information
(please pay attention to the tags ✨✨ no cw's for this one)
"Wha's this thing called again?" Hobie frowned at the small, inflated crisp looking thing.
'It's called a Pani Puri, stop being so difficult," Pav reached up to hit him on the head, failing not so miserably. Hobie wanted to laugh at his disgruntled face. It had been a hot minute since they had hung out. Plus, Miles could probably use a break after the entire 'destabilising the multiverse' debacle. Pav had immediately dragged them to a nearby stall stacked to the top of the colourful umbrella with these Pani Puris, while blabbering non stop about foot traffic.
Hobie supposed some things transcend universes. Like crowds. Stray animals in narrow alleyways. Rude people. Rude cops. His crush on Pav. Capitalism. You get it. Hobie was broken out of his thoughts by the stall keeper handing him a tiny leaf cup. It was 5 centimetres at most.
"What are these for?" Gwen asked.
Pav smiled. Hobie's heart skipped a beat. "For eating. You'll see." He answered cryptically.
"Thoda time lagega beta, abhi kate pyaaz khatam hogaye," The stall keeper started chopping onions at the speed of light, his knife clacking against the ratty wooden board.
"Koi nahi kaka, aap aaram se karo," Pav bounced on the balls of his feet, replying to whatever the stall keeper said, in his sweet voice. Hobie loved when Pav spoke Hindi, there was something so flowy about it.
"What did he say?" Miles asked. Hobie was curious too. He only caught the heavily accented 'time'.
"He said it's gonna take a few mins, he just ran out of onions."
"That cutting board does not look hygienic," Gwen said, as Pav manoeuvered everyone to stand in a loose circle around the vendor.
"Arey bahut saaf hai beta! Very hygienic!" The stall keeper nodded at her, now chopping coriander. Gwen went red. Miles burst out laughing.
Pav looked embarrassed as well, and Hobie wanted to just. Hold him. He'd settle for standing close to him as he tried to sputter out something.
"Bura mat manna kaka, aapko pata hai yeh videshi log kaise hote hain." Pav scratched his neck, flashing a winning smile at the vendor and Hobie felt something stab in his heart.
"Chalega chalega, badi hi gori dikh rahi hai, pata chal gaya yahan se nahi hai." The stall keeper said while arranging the dishes around. "Uske liye kam tikha dun?"
"Gwen, do you like spicy food? Miles?" Pav asked.
"Nope." said Gwen as Miles nodded.
"What about you, Hobie?" Pav turned to him, his deep brown eyes glinting something pretty in the late afternoon light.
"Sure, why no'." Hobie shrugged, a grin inexplicably tugging at his lips. Pav turned back to the man, saying stuff in lilting tones Hobie didn't understand.
The stall keeper nodded, and cracked open one of the crisps, scooping peas and potatoes inside it and adding the green liquid and onions inside it. He swiftly placed it in Hobie's cup.
"Tha's it?" Hobie was unimpressed. This little thing?
"No, bro, you gotta eat it to get more. Put it in your mouth all at once. Don't nibble at it, or it'll get soggy and get all over your clothes." Pav said, entirely shoving his own Pani Puri into his mouth like a visual example of what to do. Hobie looked at the Pani Puri in his cup for half a second more before deciding to fuck it and copied Pav, mouth closing over the stuffed crisp.
Flavours exploded on his tongue. The sweet tanginess, the crunchy onions and the spicy peas; it was nothing Hobie had expected it to taste like and nothing like anything he had eaten in his life. He chewed, feeling the bits of the crisp puri poking all around his mouth, but that was the experience. It felt otherworldly yet somehow fulfilling. Hobie automatically extended his hand for another one.
Gwen got hers, stuffing it in her mouth, with no small amount of trepidation visible on her face. It was valid, considering she started coughing the moment she chewed it, going 'hoff, hoff, hoff!' which Hobie took to mean 'hot, hot, hot!'.
"Goddamnit Gwen, how are you gonna eat dinner with us?" Miles said easily eating the puri without breaking a sweat, his Puerto Rican taste buds used to the level of spice.
Gwen glared at him, face red and sweat dripping. "Can't you cook unspicy food for me?"
"Mami will never let you in again if you eat like a white person,"
"I am white."
"Yeah, and?"
"Hooo- kaay! Calm down children! Gwen, we can go get a kulfi for you later. Miles, stop antagonising Gwen," Pav made a 'chop' gesture at them, shaking his head frantically.
The vendor had plopped another one in his cup and was holding another one in his hand waiting for them to finish bickering. Hobie ate it, only a few drops of the green liquid spilling on his fingers. And the next one as well. And the next one. This street vendor was so fast, the fuck? With only Pav and him at the stall, because Miles was busy with Gwen, the vendor seemed to make three for each one Hobie ate. Pav didn't look bothered at all, scarfing down every one as it came.
"'oly shit, Pavi, ask 'im to slow down, 'M strugglin' 'ere, mate," Hobie managed to speak in between the positive barrage of puris.
"No way, it's part of the vibe, dude, keep up," Pav was way more graceful, easily talking between the Puris, time seeming to favour him and him only.
"Seriously?" Hobie muttered on the tailend of a particularly large Pani Puri. Pav grinned again, his right canine getting caught on his own lip. Hobie was well aware that he had a staring problem, and if he didn't get himself together, Pav will be too.
"Okay, okay," Sometimes Pav looked at Hobie in a way that had him swearing his feelings were requited, and this was one of those looks that made Hobie wonder how he's still standing up straight and not a puddle on the floor like he felt on the inside. "Kaka, thoda ahistha dena, Hobie bhi yahan naya hai."
"Theek, theek, beta," The vendor laughed. "Apke aashiq ko impress toh karna padega."
Pavi choked on his Pani Puri. Hobie turned to him concerned, as he said something in 3 octaves higher than his normal voice.
"Kaka- aashiq nahi hai woh- hum bas dost hain," Pav said, wiping tears from his eyes with his sleeve.
"Meri beti bhi apne bf ko dost bolti hai. Woh dono bhi ek dusre ko aise hi dekhten hain. Usko lagta hai mujhe nahi pata lekin ham bhi toh aapke umar ke the," The vendor winked, and Hobie was sure this conversation was not about anything he could imagine. Why on earth would this random man be winking at Pav? "Aur hum yeh bajrang dal jaise vishwas nahi rakhte, pyaar toh pyaar hota hai na?"
"Ji kaka." Hobie could see Pav's blush that seemed to radiate because why else Hobie would feel flustered too? "Ahem," Pav looked at his wrist like he was looking at the time, except he did not have a wrist watch on. "Kaka abhi hame jana padega- chemistry coaching hai- kitna hua?"
"Itni jaldi? Theek hai, sukhi puri lelo," He said, handing over two flatter crisps. Without the liquid. Hobie felt it was easier to fit this in his mouth after all the other Pani Puris. "Sath rupay hue,"
"Kya kaka, angrez dekhte bhau badha dete ho? Main akele khata toh chalis ka hota," Pav said, his voice taking a complaining tone and Hobie was surprised to find him even more endearing.
"Beta, jab aap dhanda karoge tab samajh mein ayega, abhi apko coaching nahi jana?"
"Han, kaka, din dahade loot lo," Pav said, and Hobie got a sense of defeat from his slouch, as he forked over what Hobie assumed was the price of the Pani Puris. "Let's go, before uncle embarrasses me in front of someone."
"You paid money to your uncle?" Hobie thought it'd be easier to get around in Earth-50101 as time went on, but here he was, getting more questions and no answers as he hung around.
"He's not actually my uncle, I'm calling him that out of respect. It's a cultural thing, don't worry about it," Pav answered, grabbing Hobie's hand as he wove between the forming crowd. Hobie sighed, letting Pav drag him around, his hand warm in Pav's soft palms.
___
i have nothing to say.
translation (not literal translation bc then id have to explain a shit-ton of grammar, slang and indian pop culture to yall):
Thoda time lagega beta, abhi kate pyaaz khatam hogaye - it's gonna take some time, [I] just ran out of the chopped onions
Koi nahi kaka, aap aaram se karo - no problem uncle, take your time

Theek, theek, beta - Alright, kid
Apke aashiq ko impress toh karna padega. - [I know] you have to impress your boyfriend.
Kaka- aashiq nahi hai woh- hum bas dost hain, - Uncle- he's not [my] boyfriend- we're just friends,
Meri beti bhi apne bf ko dost bolti hai. Woh dono bhi ek dusre ko aise hi dekhten hain. Usko lagta hai mujhe nahi pata lekin ham bhi toh aapke umar ke the. - My daughter also claims her boyfriend is just a friend. They look at each other the same [way you do]. She thinks I don't know [about them], but we [adults] used to be your age.
Aur hum yeh Bajrang Dal jaise vishwas nahi rakhte, pyaar toh pyaar hota hai na? - I don't believe stuff like Bajrang Dal. Love is love, isn't it?
Ji kaka. - Yes, uncle. (in this case)
Kaka abhi hame jana padega- chemistry coaching hai- kitna hua? - Uncle, we need to go- It's time for my chemistry tutorial classes- how much [were the Pani Puris]?
Itni jaldi? Theek hai, sukhi puri lelo, - So fast? Okay here's your [aftersnack snack (that's that least complicated way to explain what a sukhi puri is)]
Sath rupay hue, - it's 60 rupees.
Kya kaka, angrez dekhte bhau badha dete ho? Main akele khata toh chalis ka hota - C'mon, uncle, y'all see a foreigner and increase the price? If I was here alone, this would have cost 40 rupees.
Beta, jab aap dhanda karoge tab samajh mein ayega, abhi apko coaching nahi jana? - Kid, when you grow up and have a job, you'll understand, now, don't you have classes to attend?
Han, kaka, din dahade loot lo - yeah, okay, why don't you just rob me,
Some context (you dont need to read this)
kulfi is an ice cream equivalent, usually flavoured with almonds, pistachios and saffron
beta literally means 'son' but its used to refer to any kid who's very young relative to the speaker's age; and also for jokes b/w buddies but that's a different thing
kaka literally means 'father's younger brother ie uncle', but can used to referred to any man who isnt related to you and is about the age of the speaker's parents; there are also other terms depending on by who and how you were introduced to the person
Bajrang Dal - an anti-societal group against religious and sexual minorities(as defined in the indian constitution, do not come at me with politics). Famous in pop culture for being vehemently against valentine's days and premarital eye contact (you think im joking)
The Chemistry Coaching thing is a big deal. Kids have great pride about which institute they go to. The institutes teach accelerated courses for specific competitive examinations, usually in an unethical way. It's considered kinda shameful if you don't go to one. (very dystopian, ik)

Synopsis: You finally start settling in, maybe even catching feelings.
A/N: reader's mom is dead and reader has siblings, I know this might take away the self indulgence but i added this to give more depth to the reader, you can feel free to skip when the reader talks about it, not proof read! btw everyone's age is different besides tuk, she's 7 just like her canon age.
Tumblr media
“take her to the tsahik.” the man with the tattoo says, and you're escorted out of the forest with the blue boy following behind you, your queue was grabbed by this random man who put a knife to it, threatening you that if you make any suspicious moves, he will cut it off.
You oblige and follow them, you quickly reach the island area when a horn is blown and all the people from the village are gathered together, looking at you, they all noticed your hands which had 4 fingers (excluding the thumb) and started letting out low growls, you were scared, looking at them.
They noticed your foreign attire, raising their non-existent brows in confusion, you were in a black crop top and pants, you usually wear shorts when you would be training but pants have much deeper pockets so you wore them instead, you didn't really feel comfortable in Na'vi attire yet cause obviously you were shy.
You noticed how the sea people looked different, observing their greenish skin, tails, thicker hands and tattoos on parts of their bodies, and the tops seem to be more secure, until you spotted some familiar looking Na'vi bodies.
They were blue, like the forest people, you came to the conclusion that this must be jake sully's family, considering they were the only shades of blue, you notice a curious little blue girl who was looking at you so you wave to her to which she smiles but before she could wave back her she is guarded by her mother's hand, who you look up at, she was glaring at you, almost ready to strike.
You gulped, looking away immediately, keeping your head down, all the commotion dies down when a certain lady appears, she seemed to be the tsahìk they mentioned, she looks at you, and examines you, she then spots your fingers before giving you a dirty look and looking at the muscular man, you assumed he would be the olo'eyktan considering their attire.
“What is a sky demon doing here.” She sneers looking at you, and before you can answer, jake talks to her, “My son caught her in the forest behind us, said there was a sign from eywa.”
“Explain.” she raises her brow looking at the blue boy who seemed to keep his head low, he looks up to see his father giving the look to speak, he swallows the lump in his throat before opening his mouth.
“I noticed her aircraft from above and followed it, it was camouflaged into the dark sky but I located and found her, I was about to shoot her with my arrow but suddenly a woodsprite landed on my arrow, I had no idea where it came from.” he spoke quickly, all in one breath, took a sharp breath after finishing his sentence.
Neytiri was shocked at this, she looked at jake and he looked at her before shrugging his shoulders, she deeply sighed, what neteyam just said gave her flashbacks.
“Woodsprite you say? Isn't their habitat dense forests? I hope you are not lying about this.” she sneered at him and he just nodded and looked down once again, “Come here.” she asks you to come near her, to which you obey, she then pokes you harshly with a needle she pulled out before tasting your blood, this lead to her closing her eyes and interpreting the will of eywa, everyone watched her intently.
She snapped her eyes open before looking at you shocked, before gasping, “She will stay here.” she says making everyone gasp, including you, “But– she's working for the RDA.” jake interrupts and ronal just stays quiet.
“I don't.” you speak out and jake turns towards you, “I am from a different organization, SERO.” you speak and he looks at you confused, “SERO?” he asks and you nod, “Space and Earth Resources Organization, built after the first war, to compete against RDA.” you explain and he's just silent, it's almost as if he's telling you to continue.
“Basically, after the first war between Na'vi and the Humans, information got leaked of RDA's inhumane practices against all life of Pandora, which caused riots and disapprovals from humans, and during those times SERO stepped in, standing against RDA.” you say in english, cause it's easier that way, and this shocks jake, he didn't know all this, of course how can he know? he's been living on Pandora all these years.
“Against or not, you are still sky people, you will bring doom upon us.” you hear another voice say and you look over to see, assuming, Jake's mate, the amount of deja vu you got was insane, her son literally said a similar thing, guess you know who he takes after now.
“Trust me, we won't–” before you can continue you hear the lady from earlier hissing, “Enough, figure this out later, she will stay with us, teach her our ways.” she says and scowls at the sully family, she looks at you, and you immediately do the sign version of ‘I see you’ to her and her husband before thanking them, to which they both nod, you were supposed greet them earlier but given the circumstances, you couldn't.
“Tsireya and the Suli family will help you fit in, treat her like one of us.” the lady says before turning leave, her husband also agrees with her and leaves along with her, “Bring her to our pod, son.” jake says before making his way too, the blue boy grasps your wrist and drags you with them, you wince when he pulls you, nevertheless he let's go of you wrist when you start following them.
As make your way to their pod, the young girl from before speaks up to you excitedly, “Hello! I'm the second daughter! Tuktirey te Suli Neytiri'ite—” she says and you get confused, “—or just Tuktirey, my nickname is Tuk!” she finishes after seeing your reaction to which you give her a warm smile, “I'm Y/N L/N, or Y/N for short.” you introduce yourself to her.
“I'm Kiri, the first daughter, but not exactly.” the girl with the short hair says, before the boy behind her speaks up, “and I'm Lo'ak the second son, it's nice to meet you Y/N.” he gives you a smile as well, which you return, and you look at their mother who seems to have a blank expression on her face, “aaaand my mom's name is neytiri! Neytiri te Tshaka/Suli Mo'at'ite, or just neytiri sully.” Lo'ak introduces his mother to you, you once again do the hand signal and speak “I see you, mrs sully.” you say and refer to her in English to which she acknowledges, you notice her smile a little bit, maybe she likes being called mrs sully.
You guys gather around the pod and they all sit down in a circle, and jake asks you to speak, and you do, explain everything you can to them, and he nods, “So, you're reestablishing a normal relationship between the human and the people here? ” he pauses and you nod, “and you need my help to defeat and save the people against the RDA?” he asks, “Yes sir.” you answer.
“I'm sorry kiddo, but, I am done with war, I just want to keep my family safe.” he says, feeling guilty to disappoint you, “No Mr sully, you do not understand, the RDA has sent out troops to find you, they're killing anything and everything in order to find you, you running away won't help.” you say straight to his face, making the family gasp, jake looks down before meeting your eyes, “I'll think through this.” he says and you sigh in relief.
The tense atmosphere dies down as the conversation returns to normal, the siblings just having fun in their own world, jake and neytiri discussing, you were sitting next to his oldest son. He was lost in his thoughts before you speak, “You know, I never got your name.” he looks at you before sighing “Neteyam te Suli Tsyeyk'itan.” he says.
“Yeah I definitely got all of that,” you say sarcastically, “Slower this time please?” you ask and he huffs, “Neteyam.” he says, “Nate ayyy am?” you repeat, he shakes his head slightly, “Ne.te.yam.” he repeats and follow along, “Neteyam.” you say his name which brings a smile to your face and he just stares at you, “Nice meeting you Neteyam.” you say brightly to which he replies with a nod.
You turn to look at his parents who already seemed to have been staring at you in shock for a while, they look at each other before looking back at you, Jake gives you a tight lipped smile which you return, ‘that was weird’ you think.
“Soooo, what next?” you ask and neteyam speaks up, “You will be learning the ways of water, frankly speaking we just came here only a few months ago but we've learned to grasp most of the things, now only iknimaya is left for me and my siblings, excluding tuk—”
“We all will teach you, along with the daughter of the olo'eyktan, tsireya, who you might've noticed earlier.” he finishes off and you nod, “But, where do I live?” you ask and Jake sully speaks up, “You will live with us.”
“Can I go back to get my stuff from the aircraft?” you ask, and jake thinks for a moment, “Yes, but let my son accompany you.” he says, “Oh! I would love to dad—” before Lo'ak could finish off what he's saying, he gets interrupted, “Not you, Neteyam will.” to which neteyam groans at.
“Great, now I've got to babysit another one.” he mutters underneath his breath, jake doesn't hear it but you do, so you just raise an eyebrow.
“By the way how old are you kid?” Jake asks you, “Uh, I guess I'll be 21? if we include the travel from earth to pandora, but I was 18 when I boarded the spaceship” you say and jake sully is surprised, “what? it only took 3 years to travel?” and you nod, “SERO outdoes everything you know, plus, technology.”
“My oldest son is 21 too, same age as you, the youngest is 19, kiri is 19 too, tuk is 7.” he says, “Oh I guess Neteyam can drink then.” you say which makes jake chuckle, but the others look at you confused, jake explains how the age system works for humans to them.
He looks at you and proceeds to explain the Na'vi age system, “There is no specific legal age here, but in order to be considered an adult here you will need to complete iknimaya, which my sons are in the process of doing.” he says and you nod, “Do I have to as well?” and jake replies with a “Yes.”
“Well, what is the process then?” you ask and Jake explains.
“You would need to tame a Tsurak, Skimwing in English, after that you'll get your first tattoo, that's the first major thing to get done, after that there's miniscule things which will be explained along the way.” he says and you nod.
“Alright, I'm ready to tame a Tsurak!” you say which makes jake laugh, “Maybe settle for an ilu? And work your way up? I'm sure what you've trained for is the forest way, things are a bit different here.” he says with a shrug.
“It can't be that difficult!” you say.
———
Oh how you'd learn to regret those words, you were currently underwater, it's really difficult to hold your breath, you can't stay underwater for more than 30 seconds which was pissing off Neteyam.
You once again go to the surface for breath, Neteyam follows you, “Oh come on, why are you so bad at this?” he says, he gets a smack on the head from Lo'ak, “Come on bro, she's learning, we were like her too.” he says making neteyam huff.
“It's okay, I will teach you how to breathe.” Tsireya says from behind you, to which you turn around to face her, honestly you thought she was an angel, she's so kind and welcoming even though you were one of the sky people, she trusted you a lot, she even lent you one of her new tops and loincloths she made, saying that it will be difficult to swim in your human underwear.
Neteyam notices the loose knot on your back, it was about to fall apart, he pulls you closer, catching you by surprise, and undos the tie, your hands immediately rush over to your chest trying to keep the piece secured.
“Don't even know how to tie it properly.” He says before tying it for you, the top feels much more secure than before, you blush before turning to look at him, “Thank you.” you say removing your hands from your chest, and he scoffs, “That was so rude tho, could've just told me.” you say while rolling your eyes, you both continue to banter on and on.
Everyone just looked at each other and giggled in a teasing manner, “Okay guys, stop. Let's focus now.” Tsireya says and everyone nods.
The sun started setting a few hours later, you had finished your training for the day, tired was an understatement, staying in water and training too long caused you to lose your balance on land, falling face front into the sand, Neteyam helps you get up and you guys make your way to the Suli marui pod.
Your legs finally give up and you fall gently into the floor, closing your eyes, sleep succumbing you.
You wake up back at the lab before rushing out of the link unit and going to the head of the scientist camp, Miss aria, you immediately call her over and she comes to you.
“I've located Jake sully, he's living on the islands surrounded by sea, with his family, it's a village called awa'atlu.” you immediately tell her all you can and she signals you calm down first.
“I see, that's great news! did he say anything about helping us out?” she asks and you slowly shake your head, “he didn't particularly say he would help us, I explained the situation and he said he would think about it.” you say and she nods.
“That's a good enough response, and what about you? How are you settling in?” she asks, concerned for you, “Rocky at best, sea people have way more complicated life style than the forest ones, all my training is useless there.” you say with a deep sigh, she nudges you “Hey! It's completely okay.” she cheers you up, to which you give her a smile.
“Any updates on the RDA?” you ask and she nods, “We've planted a few devices and they're giving us information, tracking their movement, we have seized a few of their machinery for the war as a back up, we have enough to fight against them if things go South. We really need to defend this planet Y/N.” she deeply sighs.
“Have they made any progress in their mission?” you ask and she nods, “They are moving to the sea area now, terrorizing the clans there, we're sending few more of our troops to defend against them, Earth had sent 7 more spaceships here after the one you were in, in no time we will have enough people for this plan.” she says and you simply nod.
“Alright I'll leave all this to you.” you say and she nods, you quickly make your way to the cafeteria and grab some food before eating and going back to the link units.
You open your eyes to see concerned faces directly staring at you, a wave of relief washes over those expressions when you finally get up, “Oh my god you scared us!” says Lo'ak, “We thought you died.” Tuk says.
“No guys, I was just connecting to my human body, I have to eat or it will die.” you say and they all sigh, “We know but you fainted so suddenly.” Kiri says and you stay quiet before apologizing, “Sorry for that.” Tuk immediately hugs you.
It was already eclipse, you let out a groan, they look at you confused, “I forgot to go to the aircraft to fetch my stuff, they'll just rot in there.” you say out loud, “No need for that, I already bought them” Neteyam says pointing to the luggage at the corner of their pod, and you look at him surprised, “Thank you!” you say excited before you go and unpack it.
You pull out a box and open it, checking to see if anything happened to the contents inside, you were relieved nothing happened to them, “Who are they?” Tuk asks curiously, sitting beside you.
This causes lo'ak, kiri and neteyam to be curious too and they look at the picture from behind you, “They're my family.” you say with a smile, you pull out the picture before showing it to them.
“This is my mom, my dad and my siblings.” you say pointing to each one, “ooooo? what does your family do.” Tuk asks excitedly, they were all human, you guys look happy, smiling in the picture.
“Eh uh, my dad is a scientist back on Earth for SERO, my siblings are still in school, and as for my mom, well, she is no longer with us.” you say with a sad smile, fingers grazing over her smiling face.
“No longer with you?” Lo'ak asks and you nod, “She's dead, died in a gang encounter when I was just 17” you say, and the atmosphere goes quiet, “Well at least you can get to talk to her through consciousness no? like spirit tree or something” Tuk asks and you shake your head, “We do not have any of those things, once they are gone, they are gone forever.” you say and Tuk looks at you sadly before giving you a hug, “This is why you should live here with us!!” she says and you chuckle, “Oh I wish!” you say before tickling her to which she laughs.
You've gotten close with the Suli family in just one day, everyone liked you, your atmosphere, however neteyam still had his guard up, so did his mother but they didn't hate you or anything, just tolerated you.
“Sorry for the depressing topic! Let's switch to something else.” you say lightening the mood up and everyone nods, you all get lost in your conversations.
——— 2 weeks later.
You had mastered the way of water, learnt the sign language, rode an ilu, were able to stay more than 3 minutes underwater, you noticed how Na'vi bodies adapt more quickly than human bodies, this would've taken you a month to master rather than two weeks.
You had learnt all the basics and now finally, you were learning how to hunt underwater, Neteyam was the one teaching you surprisingly, he apparently was a skilled hunter.
“Hold it like this.” he signs at you before fixing your posture, this causes him to get really close to you and you look at him with a smile, he looks at you with a stoic expression before raising an eyebrow and putting some distance between you guys.
You successfully were able to shoot a big fish down, you cheer underwater, lifting your arms and going over to collect your hunt, before neteyam and you go up.
You gasp for air and hold the fish over your head, “I did it! I did it neteyam! Look!” you say excitedly, he smiles at you and takes the fish from your hands, you slowly make your way to the shore before sitting down.
“I can't believe I caught this!” you say kicking you feet in excitement, “It's really shocking how you did that on your first try.” he says and you roll your eyes sarcastically at him, “Well I didn't train for nothing, although things are different here at sea than at forest.” you say which makes him chuckle, before he starts reminiscing of the forest.
“I miss the forest.” he suddenly says making you look at him, “But I thought you liked it here? You scold your siblings when they say that dont you.” you ask him confused and he nods, “That's cause it's my duty as their older brother, but deep down I feel the same, I want to go back to my clan, the forest where I grew up in, the one where I made so many memories, I just don't say it because I have to teach my siblings to love it here, it's my job, I feel this thinking of me is immature.” he finally speaks his mind, neteyam had always been so closed off, not speaking more than necessary.
You put your hand on his shoulder to which he looks at you, “It's okay neteyam, I know it's your duty as an older brother but being immature sometimes is completely okay, you're allowed to feel, do not be harsh on yourself for this.” you say and he looks into your eyes, before biting his lips.
“I just— I don't know, it's difficult being an oldest child, your siblings are your responsibility, it feels as if I was born just to take care of them, don't get me wrong, I love my siblings and I do it willingly but sometimes it just gets too much, and i do not want to disappoint my father.” his voice cracks at the last sentence, tears welling up in his eyes, you look at him and pat his head, he closes his eyes in relief, finally being comforted.
“Neteyam, you're a good brother, I am very proud of you.” you say and he opens his eyes to look at you, “I see you.” you say which makes neteyam gasps, your intention was to make him feel seen, feel heard, feel understood, but what you didn't know was, those words turned the small feelings of rain inside him into a big storm.
Neteyam fell for you instantly, in that moment, “What are you guys doing here?” you hear tsireya's voice calling for you, you take the fish from his hand and run over to her, he can hear you explaining how you caught it in an excited voice.
He stares at you, eyes filling with love and respect for you, you look at him and signal him to follow you, to which he does, getting up and trailing behind you, his heart besting frantically in his chest.
———
It has been a few days since that incident and it seems neteyam has finally warmed up to you, you both have been spending a lot of time together, which surprised no one, he took you to a few of the places he knew here, where he usually hangs out.
It was currently eclipse you were staring at the many moons and the planet before you, with neteyam along your side, “Neteyam look! Those starts over there are connecting, to form a shape.” you point out and he looks at it, “You're right!” he says taking in the beauty.
But he finds you more beautiful tho, you've also slowly started to fall in love him, the island, everything.
“Beautiful.” he says, you thought he complimented the stars and you agree with him before he shakes his head and turns your face towards his, coming closer.
“You're beautiful.” he says making your eyes widen, he looks into your eyes and you do the same, before his focus shifts to your lips and back to your eyes again, you slowly lean in, he does the same until you're both interrupted by a Lo'ak yelling for you guys, saying how it's clan dinner time, you quickly pull away and get up, neteyam following quietly.
Both of your guy's heart were beating so fast and rapidly, you quickly make your way to where lo'ak was and walk together to the clan dinner.
When you guys reach then you notice how most of the village is here, they were all sitting together and eating, neteyam grabs your hand and pulls you to sit by him and you do, before handing you a plate full of food, you eat happily along with him, talking about so many things.
Neytiri looks at both of you, before she turns to jake, “we cannot let this seed grow ma jake.” she says and jake was confused before he catches on to what she means, “why not? they seem perfect for one another.” he questions, “she's a sky person.” she tries to reason but jake just chuckles, “I was too, remember?” he says which makes her turn to look at him, “But it's different— she's-” before she can say anything, jake cuts her off, “there is no difference, you're just afraid that you might lose your son, you won't.” jake hugs her and she returns it back.
Tsireya and Lo'ak join you both and all of laugh together consuming the food.

Question;
Ok so I started writing this lil fic that I thought about-
And the thing is, I want to add some greek to it
(It's by Neil's pov btw an he can't (yet) speak greek)
But let's say a non-greek person is reading, do I write the words like "Συγνώμη!" With the Greek alphabet or try to spell them out in English like "Siynomi!" (Or would that be Sygnomi?) So the reader has the chance to feel what it sounds like?
Or should it be like "Sorry!" But in italics to show that it's a different language?
Btw at some point someone will teach Neil Greek but not say the right meaning and the reader(if they don't speak Greek) won't know until Neil embarrasses himself
(Or if I decide to write the meaning in the notes)

Meet and Greet
Note: the Italic lines are where we talk on our language not english. Enjoy!
When at the end I decided to inform my parents I have a significant other, they insisted on meeting him, he was eager to meet them too, so he took some days off, and we flew to Europe. My twin-sister said she will back me up, so she was gonna come with her faience too. Although my partner kinda understand and spoke my mother tongue, I instructed him to say he isn’t.
When we arrived, just for lunch, and the family met him, my father was shocked he is vegan and also not drinking alcohol; my dad was prepared with variates of exquisite drinks and raw dry meat specials; I was yet again scoffed with my poor choice of men. My father even asked if he is “at least usable for something” to which I refused to answer and only rolled my eyes. My mother was disappointed I didn’t picked the prettiest one – his mostly short hair was fluffy and pointing at all directions as his beard, and my grandma started feeding him, because he was “too skinny”. Non of the said was true, but … parents!
The next evening, which felt like years, my sis finally arrived with her man. He was welcomed like a King, no hard feelings here. There were salads, desserts, meat, wine, whisky, for their favourite to-be-son-in-law. We just stood there unnoticed, but happy to be finally alone with each other.
My Love was always busy, not that I complained, he was a blast at everything he was doing, and I also enjoyed watching him work and create. I recently quit my job in Boston, to move to LA with him, and was currently working with him, helping the crew … ops family … in every way I can.
When finally noticed by my sister, she screamed so loud, even I flinched. She jumped on hugging me and kissing me. When she saw him … God! She was more quiet than the Death itself! She looked at me, than at him, than at me again, and in the end at her fiancé.
-        That’s your boyfriend? – she barely managed to whisper.
-        Yep! – I proudly smiled.
She was obviously shocked.
-        Yes I know she used to hate me, I am aware of all the full and complete story. – he joked.
-        Where is his King … welcoming? – she whispered and started to panic already.
-        I am no king … - he laughed it off – I came because that’s the tradition … to be honest I am not a fan of meeting people who treated their child so poor, just because she didn’t fit in their views of the world … - I gently kicked him under the small coffee table.
-        He is vegan and also doesn’t drink, barely eats, because he forgets … how do you see my parents having a … “welcoming ceremony” on him?
-        Oh God! – she sat on my lap, still in shock.
-        I am Jared, btw. – he offered his hand.
-        Mila! Although I know who you are.
-        Yeah, I guess you do. Nice pics, I counted 7, Lallo is really very photogenic. I am sure it’s Italian thing. – he joked. And she was now more red then the idea of red itself.
-        That’s Stefan, her to-be-husband. She had to flew to Italy to met him, and it turned out he was from the city nearby. – they nod a greeting.
-        Faith, destiny …
-        A horse! – we both laugh.
We sat on the big dinner table, eating and talking - everything and nothing. Foods and drinks were passed by around. I managed to steal a bowl of green salad, after reassuring him, it was made for him, and no one will miss it, he hugged the bow and start eat it. My dad asked questions about him, to which I answered, without even asking. I was scoffed yet again, to let the boy talk, but I had to explain, he doesn’t speak our language, besides the “idiot” and “homeless crap” that I call him, when mad. My sister chocked on her wine, after I said how I call him, and kick me quite harsh. Her fiancé was asked about his job and achievements, the family was indeed interested. His achievements were highly prized by my parents. At some point he turned to my sister and whispered he is feeling uncomfortable, because whet he does in nothing compared to saving the environment ad helping those in heed.
-        If you are feeling awkward, which I think it’s true by the face you are making, don’t be, I am not doing this for glory, but because it had to be done.
-        So … you …
-        Understand, I am horrible at speaking to many consonants next to each other. – he laughed. – please continue, I manage to keep up, and it’s indeed interesting.
Stefan smiled and continued talking, but a little bit slowly, pronouncing the words with caution so they will be easier to understand. The fluffy mess with the salad bow was indeed interested. As he always is when there is something new, and these were 2.
My sister wasn’t the gloating type, she was just a person that was good at everything she does. And my parents loved to throw her success on my face, showing me how unworthy I am. My mother disliked me even more, because it was me who prevent my sister of blind-following my mother like a puppet. Not that she didn’t saw it, but when she didn’t I protected her of the “do everything so the others will like you” decease.
-        He liked it a lot.
-        What?
-        The arrangement of the pics. Don’t you think I didn’t told him, or make pictures of the pictures to show him. – I winked at my sis.
-        When?
-        Like … yesterday! – I laughed.
-        It’s Italian thing … - J mumbled with mouth full of lettuce.
My mother raised her brow at him. “No Talking with mouth full”, I translated and he nod in apology. My sister was still shocked. After almost 2 hours of dinner she finally asked:
-        Aren’t you gonna tell them?
-        What? – I got close to her.
-        Who he is!
-        No!
-        Why?
-        They will drown us in “famous people bullshit theory and prejudices”, thanks, but no thanks! His mother presented me in front of her friends as her daughter. I can’t do this to him! Also me and Tomo are amazing with backings in the kitchen. I am sure Vicki is a little bit heavier after we met. – I giggled.
-        Horrible, you are gonna ruin these people. What about his brother?
-        Aww … I am his baby sis now, so I guess he likes me. I am trying to convince him he wants to ask a sexy “Rolling Stones” journalist out, they like each other a lot, actually, he just needs a lil push, that’s all.
J looked at us, obviously judging.
-        He knows what are we talking about! – she said in awe, his weird-blue-eyes gaze had the power to leave people speechless.
-        Yeah, probably and definitely the name of the magazine, and the “journalist” word gave us away. – I laughed. He winked at me. – He understands the similar words, I often yell at our language, but that’s all!
-        So, he is having no idea, what we are talking about?
-        Probably not. – I chuckled - … but I am not sure how he’s going, he still refuses to tell me! –.i yelled and he made a grimace.
-        Are you guys gonna get married?
-        You are asking for Lallo, aren’t you?
-        Italian thing … - he pointed his fork at her – told ya!
-        Yeah you did. – I laughed and she rolled her eyes.
The next day me and J had to fly back to LA, my sis and her man stayed for a few days more. Later that night she send me this video of our parents watching one of his TV statements for saving the environment, the nature, the animals, better future for humanity, for the upcoming generations, no wars … It was an old one because he looked different, thank God, and they didn’t managed to recognize him. My grandmother just sighs and was like “can’t she find herself someone like him … he is not perfect, but they will match, they are weird in the same way”. To which my sister laughed and ends the video.
