Eda Clawthorne-The Owl House

Qualifications:

She has a magical chronic disorder which has flare-ups, is mitigated by taking medication (potions), and has similar side effects to many real disorders such as fatigue, greying hair, and physical impairment (drains magic, a natural ability of *most witches). Unlike in other stories however, her condition is NOT ever completely cured. It does evolve and become more manageable over the course of the story, but she still experiences symptoms from it. Eda also loses one of her arms later in the story. She does get a replacement hook, but it is never shown whether she has a functional prosthetic or not. Most likely, she only has one fully functioning arm after this. As for being queer, she is in a relationship with a nonbinary person and is all but confirmed bisexual (has a secret box with the bi flag on it seriously why else would she have this). Also the owl house has a Lot of queer characters in it and I mean. just look at her. I would be surprised if she wasn't queer somehow.

Propaganda:

Has canonically dated both men and a non-binary person. Her curse affects her ability to use magic (and at one point outright stops it), which is very important in witch life. Said curse also causes her body parts to fall off sometimes. Many have said her curse is like a metaphor for depression but really it's more like a magic version of a physical disability (although I wouldn't be surprised if she actually also had depression).

He has a boyfriend (and then they have a sort-of-breakup but they're back together by the end) and he has a prosthetic arm.

He’s gay and missing an arm.

He’s explicitly gay, in love with a man. He loses his arm then builds himself a prosthetic while on the run like a badass.

His boyfriend cut his arm off :( he uses a prosthetic now.

His arm got chopped off after being falsely accused of killing the queen, he spends the rest of the movie with a prosthetic metal arm. His arm was also chopped off by his lover, Ambrosius Goldenloin, during said false assassination.

Let's see. He and Ambrosius are lovers, or at least boyfriends, from the moment they're introduced. Ballister gets his arm chopped off by Ambrosius during the false assassination. Ballister spends the rest of the movie trying to convince Ambrosius and the kingdom of his innocence, with a metal arm replacing his missing one. It originated the phrase "Arm Chopping is not a love language!" Did I mention he's a main character too?

A knight, Nimona's best friend and father figure of sorts, but the plot mostly revolves around him- Ballister is framed for murder and has to hide while trying to figure out who framed him and how to prove he's innocent. Nimona becomes his sidekick (he didn't want one, she just showed up at his place one day like a very chaotic stray cat) and together they form a great duo against the corrupt government. This is complicated by Ballister's ex Ambrosius, who accidentally cut off Ballister's arm and is a bit brainwashed by government propaganda. Oops. You should watch Nimona it's great 💞🦈

24. Scyther

he's just some guy who is also a cool looking bug who also has swords coming out of his fucking arms. a rare example of a gen 1 pokemon design that is 'extremely based' and not 'extremely boring'.

23. Roserade

Roselia in gen 3 was such a meh pokemon, so giving it this unexpectedly cool Tuxedo Mask evolution in gen 4 was awesome. I will be fully honest that my favorite version of Roserade is the shiny because it gets black and purple roses. cool as fuck

21. Calyrex (Shadow Rider i guess)

as someone who skipped pokemon sword/shield entirely, this design is actually some of the coolest shit i've seen. weird looking deer knight riding on the back of a ghost horse? actually stupidly cool they were really cooking with this one.

15. Hisuian Zoroark

this is a prime example of how the regional variants in modern pokemon can completely improve on the original. the original zoroark is a pretty generic edgy dog. this is a new and much more interesting take in general, it makes its once gimmicky Illusion ability much more sinister and tied to its backstory/lore. also such a great color scheme, i love the weird almost fungal looking growths on it?

this is a vampire bat dragon, potentially the coolest thing to ever exist ever. you agree. also i like the color scheme, purple/green/red aren't usually things i would put together but it works very well here

there is a tumblr post that calls this thing "so nonbinary it kills you" (or something like that) and holy shit are they right. what a cool mix of gardevoir and gallade's designs. plus making it a robot knight. cool as fuck, definitely the best paradox pokemon. and again, it isn't even close lmao

i remember being a little disturbed and/or weirded out by this thing when i played gen 3. over the years it has grown on me so much. what a weird fucking design. i too want a giant mouth horn growing out of my head. bonus points to mawile for also getting a sick mega evolution that i am pretty sure broke the metagame for a while. lol, lmao even.

imagine you're Glalie, the world's most generic and boring ice type of all time, evolved from Snorunt and already forgotten the moment you're introduced in gen 3. then gen 4 comes along and gives female Snorunts one of the coolest pokemon of all time as an evolution. truly THE most insane evolutionary glow up in the history of the franchise. anyway i love this thing, i love that she murders hikers and displays their corpses for people that's so cool i love you froslass congratulations on your transition

definitely my favorite eeveelution, i love its simple design, the gem really ties it together. this is really one of those pokemon that feels like it'll be on your team for life. i will not elaborate on this

6. Bewear

i fucking LOVE this thing it makes me so fucking uncomfortable to look at. it has the best lore of any pokemon ever: it hugs people to death. god what a cool pokemon if it shattered my spine i would probably just say 'ok'

5. Floette

THIS IS MY WHITE WHALE, DUDE. I WILL NEVER BE OVER THE SUPER POWERED X/Y MAIN STORY VERSION OF THIS THING BEING CODED INTO THE GAME AS AN EVENT POKEMON AND THEN GAMEFREAK NEVER RELEASED IT. despite my bitterness i love floette whenever i see it. one of the quiet joys of scarlet/violet was seeing this tiny thing chilling out in the wild. to me its face is like The representation of happiness. i have no idea why i love it so much but i'm just happy whenever i see it

4. Suicune

when i was little i was obsessed with this thing. i remember playing pokemon silver and being captivated by it. then i was THRILLED that of all pokemon they could pick they made it the mascot for crystal. when i went on road trips as a kid i would imagine this thing running alongside the car and had all sorts of mental AMVs with it. now that i am an adult and have had time to reflect on suicune, however, i have come to realize something: suicune is actually the coolest fucking thing ever and i was so fucking right all along about this

3. Hisuian Typhlosion

i loved typhlosion as a kid, and most of my attachment to the original one is probably nostalgia related. however, like hisuian zoroark, this is one of those designs that just genuinely improves on the original in every way. i have NO idea why they chose to glam up typhlosion so much in legends arceus but i am so glad they did. adding Ghost typing is such a strange concept on paper but they executed it SO well. i love its dopey little look. what a gem of a design to find so recently in pokemon's lifespan.

2. Alolan Raichu

the original Raichu has always lived in Pikachu's shadow-- it has a cool enough design, but no one is ever going to pay attention to it when it's prevo is literally the world famous series mascot. so i am THRILLED with what a great design Alolan Raichu has. it's so fucking cute, it looks unique while still being obviously tied to the original. i love that it looks like a pancake. i love adding Psychic type to it -- like with Hisuian Typhlosion, an odd idea in concept that works perfectly. i love that it surfs on its adorable, giant tail. GOD i love alolan raichu it is such a good pokemon

Flygon

i love flygon, it's a sand dragonfly that evolves from the world's most adorable antlion. this is an instant pick for my team in every game it's in. i love its dragonfly eyes doubling as sand goggles. flygon is so cool you can make the argument for Dragon/Ground/Bug triple typing, but Gamefreak are fucking cowards and will never do that. it is because they are afraid of what flygon would do with this power. YAY FLYGON

Green Lanterns of the 'Modern Age'

Hal Jordan-Spectre

From Coast City, California

Green Lantern during the latter half of the 20th Century, in roughly the same generation as Jade, Obsidian, and Infinity Inc, and Robert Queen, during his work with IO.

So technically he’s Pre-Modern Age

Coast City gets destroyed by Monarch, after which he disappears into deep space.

He returns in the modern age, possessed by Parallax and slaughtering the Guardians and a good chunk of the Corp.

The damage he does leaves the Green Lantern Rings vulnerable to being overtaken by other emotions, leading to a recruitment drive by Sinestro and his Qwardian allies, amongst other factions…

Following his death at the hands of his fellow Lanterns, Sinestro, and the League, he would find himself as the new host of the Spectre.

John Stewart-Mosaic

From Midway City, Michigan (Which takes the place of Detroit), an architect who gained his ring holding off a damaged Manhunter while he was consulting with Ferris Air.

The first “Modern” Green Lantern, and a founding member of the Justice League.

Had a brief Space-Vegas marriage to Katma Tui, though they would eventually settle into a more platonic relationship, and have a romance with Hawkwoman, Kendra Munoz-Sauners.

Following Hal’s rampage, John would be appointed to the position of Guardian, overseeing the GLC during the War of Light and the resulting treaty to form the Mosaic.

Would later override his Lantern Ring with compassion, becoming an Indigo Lantern when the First Lantern escapes.

Loves the alien tech he encounters, wants to take stuff apart to see how it works, reverse engineer alien tech and how it can be modified, how it works with human technology.

Very thorough and blueprint-y construct style, which makes him a little slow by lantern standards but makes his constructs incredibly durable.

Guy Gardner-The Warrior

Actually nonbinary.

Was a social worker before a TBI, is very mad about it.

Opened a bar in Bludhaven, Warriors, and even made some association with Dick Grayson.

Tapped as a back up Lantern by John when he went off world due to their willpower. The other leaguers really questioned John’s judgement on that one.

Still proved their mettle, but gave up the ring surprisingly easy once John was back.

Would still be tapped as a GL and JL reserve, but lose his rings and both arms during the Emerald Twilight.

Would later get metamorphic prosthetics originally belonging to the Vuldarii, a civilization that harnessed the Emotional Lights in a much more raw, untamed form.

Became the Warrior and served with the JLI, harnessing their emotions to power the prosthetics.

Their use of the Emotional spectrum now is flame-like, fast and destructive, but actual Light based constructs have little lasting power.

Kylie Rayner-The White Lantern

Irish Woman here.

Given a GL Ring by a dying Ganthet during Emerald Twilight.

Would spend her career fighting the Controllers, their Effigies, The Third Army, The First Lantern, etc..

Alex DeWitt doesn’t die, but they eventually break up.

Also has a very intense relationship with Soranik Natu, who herself would become the Yellow Lantern representative of the Mosaic.

Ascends to become The White Lantern during Crisis, becoming a guardian of E136’s dimensional barriers.

Her construct style has a sketchy quality to it, and tends to evolve through different “drafts”

Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz-Emerald and Opal

Okay, these two aren’t Green Lanterns per say, but connected to the Emotional Light and Darklands, like Jade & Obsidian (20th century Infinity Inc. heroes, here)

The ring of Volthoom (native to E136 here, a GL ring high jacked by the ancient rogue Emerald Knight, Volthoom of Mars) finds a host in the traumatized Jessica Cruz, sewing chaos as Limelight.

Eventually Jessica gains control of the ring, though it tries to blow itself up.

I explain how that goes (and how Simon enters the story) here.

Simon walks out of the explosion connected to the Light, capable of GL style hard light constructs and healing.

Jessica leaves connected to the Darklands, allowing her to manipulate her shadow like a GL ring, travel through shadows, and see visions.

They fall in with Infinity Inc. at first, but join the JL soon enough, before getting married.

Jo Mullein-Far Flung

Recruited after John’s appointment to Guardianhood, dispatched to Far Sector for a while.

Is recalled to Earth to help teach Stephanie, and ends up as the JL's main Lantern.

Stephanie Brown-Emerald Knight

Spoiler. Robin. Batgirl. Dead. Arkham Knight. 

Stephanie actually gets a Red Lantern Ring around Crisis, though overrides it through sheer force of will.

Is partnered with Jo Mullein, and thus the secondary Lantern of the JL, which would see her working with two of her exes.

Cheerful elevator music filled the space, although it didn't drown out the pounding of Piers' heart. The glowing red numbers on the screen ticked down, as their anxiety ticked up. The cotton of their gloves was already sticking to their hands, and they prayed the sweat wouldn't turn the white fabric yellow. Piers Hall is one of the two primary characters of Not Your Typical Fairytale, although it's arguable that Piers drives much more of the overarching plot compared to Grady. Adopted by Queen Adele when they were an infant, Piers has grown up pampered in the Palace. With two older siblings, they never expected to become the next reigning Monarch. However, when they were 11, an assassination attempt killed their two older brothers and left Piers disfigured. Suddenly, they became the only royal prince, and the only chance the Hall Royal Family had of continuing the legacy. Since the death of their siblings, Piers has trained and studied extensively, and has gained a wide breadth of knowledge to help them succeed in their future. They are about as manipulative as Adele, threatening others and bending allies and enemies to their will. Piers is not afraid to spend their time in the depths of research, digging up the dirty secrets of their enemies (and their own mother). Their only desire is to assist the people Adele stepped on during her reign, but its driven more from a place of needing to prove themself and their abilities than their kindness. After Adele abdicated the throne, Piers has risen to the challenge of Monarch, while also trying not to get murdered. As more people seem to betray them, Piers' natural distrust for others evolves into outright paranoia about most people and things in their life. Piers' closest friend and confidant is Grady Yensey. Hey tarot mami, I have been going through your readings and I have noticed you do a lot of readings on Pedro's feelings towards men and women, especially what attracts him to each gender, so to spice things up a little how does he feel about androgyny, is he sexually attracted to quite androgynous people. ❤

Hello! I asked about the androgynous look on people of all gender expressions and sexualities, okay? It’s about androgynous people that may identify as any gender, nonbinary or not. Also, this refers to possible attraction and not an overall “opinion”. The first pull was the 10 of Wands, 7 of Wands reversed and The Empress.

10 of Wands followed by 7 of Wands reversed points to him potentially feeling “intimidated” by these people at first, like an overload to his senses and the feeling of being overwhelmed. Like he feels insecure sometimes, but then he lets go and carries on. With The Empress, he might like their authenticity and their freedom to express themselves and show their feminine and masculine sides with ease and confidence. That may be attractive to him.

The second pull was the 5 of Coins, Knight of Swords and Knight of Coins. 5 of Coins means he could feel kind of estranged to them, like there is a wall and they are two separate worlds in the beginning. Knight of Swords shows him then focusing on the communication, being very direct and intellectual, developing great conversations, but not a lot of emotional connection. Knight of Coins points to a possible attraction being built over time, a slow burn, based on getting to know the person and taking time with them and letting things evolve.

So I would say, with these cards, the attraction to androgynous people would possibly be about the person. If he meets them and likes them and gets the time to connect, things can work out fine!

Knights are given the title knightlord, knightlady, or knightleth. Knightleths are all the different nonbinary knights. So an it/its knight and a they/them knight would both be knightleths. I don't remember the exact etymology but I went into the origin of the word "lord" and where it came from and how it evolved and then I did some speculative linguistics on another similar word and got leth. As for knights that use some combination of pronouns like she/they, it's up to them which kind of knight they are.

It's not so much the fighting in the mountains that's a waste, it's the petitioning the Empress of Efterant to allow them to fight in the mountains. A duel to score or touch can be declared, started, and over in ten minutes. A duel to the shield or blood can be done that day. A duel to the death requires a little more preparation. But a duel with ballistic weaponry could take weeks to get ready for.

Knights, despite their titles and fame, are property. Most nobles treat them with respect and kindness, knowing that the knight may be responsible for upholding their honor. But ultimately they are owned. I'd say a knight has a small level of autonomy, and could petition a higher noble they be transfered if they really don't like their noble. But they will still be owned and have the cost of replacing them on their head going forward.

Update

One of my goals for this year was to keep a sort of journal online. I’ve been postponing uploading it because I want to make sure that I can keep it on somewhat of a normal schedule. This post, under the read more, will have my entries from January 1st to January 19th, minus a couple days that I forgot to write about.

January 1st- Not much happened today. I woke up at 9 in the morning after only a couple hours of sleep to apply for a microgrant that will cover my legal name change. Not 100% sure how it works yet, need to remember to email them about the process. Went back to sleep and, after waking up at a more reasonable time, spent most of the day on Youtube.

January 2nd- Had to go to the dentist today. Managed to get it done with minimal complaining. Only had to get 2 fillings instead of 3. Check up in six months, not excited.

January 3rd- Watched some Scooby Doo today. Had a random craving for Taco Bell and managed to convince my mom that we should have some. Good day but not much going on.

January 4th- Got a tattoo today!! My Expecto Patronum tattoo hurt quite a bit to get and the wait was long but not horrible. Love how the tattoo turned out though, worth every second of the pain.

January 5th and 6th- Not much to say. Didn’t really do anything on either of these days.

January 8th- Forgot to journal on the 7th. Started working on a scarf for my mom using the Loop de Loom that I have. I’m really hoping she likes how it turns out. Had Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated playing in the background while I was working on it.

January 9th- Continued working on my mom’s scarf, continued watching Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated. Great show, not a huge fan of the Velma-Shaggy relationship though. Started a coding program online, really considering going for a Computer Science degree after I graduate. Don’t know if I could get any grants for it though.

January 10th- Spent a bit of time working on my mom’s scarf, making pretty decent progress. Kept Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated on in the background, love my sarcastic Velma. Highly recommend the series. Got Chipotle today, tasted amazing. Spent a bit of time on the coding program as well.

January 11th- Had to go grocery shopping today. Not my favorite thing to do but it’s not the worst thing in the world. Set up a coding terminal to practice on to try and get back into the groove for my Computer Science 2 class this semester- took Computer Science 1 last summer. Need to rework my skills a bit.

January 13th- Forgot to journal for the 12th. Finished the scarf for my mom- want to try something new with it but I don’t know if it’s gonna work. Kept watching Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated. Downloaded Visual Studio and Unreal Engine to mess around with some level designing stuff just to pass the time. Ordered my textbooks for the upcoming semester, can’t wait for school to start again. Was able to change my name for my diploma to my chosen name instead of my deadname. Was also assured that filling out the application meant that I am getting the microgrant to file my legal name change!!! Got two emails today asking for an interview with me. A general interview with a coding school I might want to attend and an interview with a volunteer job I want to do. Need a bit more information before I can schedule the phone calls though.

January 14th- Messed around with Unreal Engine a bit today- don’t fully understand some things yet. Tried to do the new thing with my mom’s scarf and it didn’t work out. Oh well.

January 15th- Gave my mom her scarf today, she loved it. She took it to her job and showed her co-teacher. Finished Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated today. Great show but I have so many feelings about it.

January 16th- Sent my name and pronoun email to most of my professors for this next semester. One professor isn’t listed yet and the other professor I just forgot to email. Two have already responded and neither of them really seem to be an issue. Might look for a tutorial for Unreal Engine to walk me through it so that I can get a better grasp on it. Started feeling bad towards the end of the day. I’m not even sure what triggered it but I just started to feel like I needed to hate myself and I don’t know why. Downloaded Unity to play around with and I found a project guide that I’m hoping to follow.

January 17th- Contacted Canvas support to have my display name changed on my account. Got my hair cut today- really need to find a way to keep my hair shaved I don’t like how it looks when the sides and back start growing out. Spent two hours today transcribing a cassette tape from some murder mystery dinner party game my mom and I found at a thrift store. Two hours and three and a half single-spaced base template typed in paragraphs pages.

January 18th- Went to the Happy Place today with my mom and some other people. It was awesome, going to be posting pictures on my main blog probably some time soon.

January 19th- Today was the first Pokemon GO Community Day of the year and the pokemon was Piplup. Got 12 shinies- including a couple three stars that I evolved. One of my goals for this year is to go to at least six community days. I also spent some time with my mom trying to figure out how to do a special presentation thing for her sub this week. My great grandma called to keep us updated about my great grandpa, not the greatest news but not the worst. My mom mentioned my name to her and apparently she’s going to try and remember it. My mom isn’t using my pronouns and I don’t know if it’s because it’s difficult for her or because we were in public spaces with people who don’t know my pronouns. I sent my name and pronoun email to my Independent Study professor today, she’s the least of my worries on how she’ll react.

Graves - Inteleon - she/he - lesbian White - cis woman - age 30

Graves came from a very unconventional background prior to entering into the League circuit. Having raised since she was young by Interpol for undercover operations, she was there and experienced things a child shouldn’t for the sake of ‘justice.’ Who’s justice is really to question in this situation, as she never had a say. It’s only once she reached legal age did she take a ‘vacation’ and decide to try the league. That’s where she re-encountered Ella, who she had met on the job in the Champion’s guard. She uses her combat skills she gained from her rigorous upbringing, which you’d think would cause her to dominate the field, but that isn’t the case. She’s actually fairly bad at it. 

She has a bit of a problem interacting with others. She was trained in how to act natural, friendly, and unassuming, but she doesn’t know how to not act. What’s Graves’ personality? Well, she’s a crybaby whenever she’s alone. Little things upset her, her anxiety ramps up her paranoia, and she keeps it all saved beneath the surface until she’s alone and then she cries. Other than crying in her off time, she’s a voracious reader, and particularly likes poetry.

If Graves could ever be honest with herself, she’d admit she’s fallen for Ella quite hard. That bright ball of sunshine brought a smile to her face in a way she hadn’t experienced before. But she wasn’t able to voice her feelings, and Ella is now sadly taken. She’s also a poor leader, along with a poor battler, and she doesn’t garner much respect from her team. She’s often spoken over by Crusher.

Crusher - Sirfetch’d - she/her - lesbian White - cis woman - age 34

Crusher likes to think she’s a gallant, chivalrous knight that leaves women quaking with soaked undies are her arrival and her deep, rusty voice sends shivers up their spine when she announces herself, and she’d like to think that everyone wants her around, but she’s wrong. She butted her way into Graves’ team, seeing its lack of, well, many things, leadership, power, attractiveness… They obviously would benefit from her accompaniment. She didn’t care what they had to say, she was going to be on their team and they were going to worship her for what she brings to the table. She’d like to think she’s wanted, but honestly, not very much so.

As if it wasn’t evidence enough, Crusher is extremely up her own ass, overconfident, and unfortunately, with enough power to back up her words. She’s a demon on the field, knocking enemies out with a single sweep sometimes. She works out on the regular, and doesn’t wear armor to show off her many (sexy) battle scars. Otherwise, she’s into collecting antique tea sets and little glass kittens to display back home. Her house is full of them.

Crusher likes to think (man she likes to think a lot of things) that everyone on the team is slightly in love with her, when she is tolerated at best. Goliath likes her, but Goliath likes everyone. He spots for her when they’re working out together, and she respects him for his strength. She’s especially hard on Thrasher and Maverick for not pulling their weight until they evolved, citing them as a weakness.

Goliath - Grimmsnarl - he/they - gay Japanese - nonbinary - age 21

Goliath hails from the Glimmwood Tangle, from quite a large and loving family, but he got it in his head that he had to see the world beyond the forest clearing, he wanted to see where all the people braving its endless maze to reach the gym were about, he wanted to know! A regular yearning princess wishing to see what’s beyond her tower she’s been trapped in. And this is the family business Matilda had to leave her swamp for, bringing his ass home. She got there a little too late, however, already picked up by Graves’ group and registered into gym fights. He couldn’t leave! He made a promise to help! And look at his cool new friends.

When not spent daydreaming about adventures he could be having, he likes to keep in shape. His family home requires constant upkeep, lest the magical wood overgrows anything manmade within a few days. He likes to read, despite struggling with it due to his dyslexia, and he hopes to write his own book one day about what he’s experienced, he wants to have an adventure worth filling a book with. He’s a very positive lad, a happy one, who tries to share the happiness with those around him.

Goliath is still young, but he’s pretty sure about who he is as a person, he knows where he stands on morals, and her own identity as well. He’s chivalrous and kind, always trying to get the team to work together and get along. It has varying results. Grievous loves to mother him, and he likes to think he’s pals with Graves. Despite being younger, he tries to protect Thrasher and Maverick.

Blitz - Centiscorch - she/her - queer White - cis woman - age 33

Blitz, like Graves, was raised by Interpol for infiltration and undercover work. Unlike Graves, however, while the Inteleon was sanded down to being a weak, anxiety-ridden mess, it only strengthened Blitz’ nerves of steel, causing her to become cold and calculating. She only joined the League circuit because she had a mandated vacation following losing her leg from the knee down, and she didn’t want to get rusty on her skills. Not to mention she saw Graves attempting to lead and failing at it and thought she’d stick around to demean her for her lack of anything worthy of use for Interpol’s workings.

She doesn’t have many hobbies, she likes working out, staying fit, and occasionally cooking some ultra healthy superfood, but it’s not like cooking is her passion. She doesn’t understand why people think you need to have a life outside of your work, she’s perfectly happy to just always be on the job and do as it demands. She smokes, but only the occasional cigarette so as to not negatively affect her health. She’s a woman of few loves, few words, and she thinks that’s just fine.

Blitz scoffs when the team tries to have any sort of ‘get to know each other’ exercise. It’s never in good faith, and just ends in disaster so she tries to avoid it. Grevious tries to mother her on occasion, for whatever reason, she never had a mother and she doesn’t want one, so she doesn’t understand why her face gets flushed and hands get sweaty when the dragon’s around.

Maverick - Corviknight - she/her - lesbian White - trans woman - age 32

Maverick is a failed knight from olden times; she was sealed in a tomb in the slumbering weld with her previous king as a way to protect him in the next life, only to be revived by Graves and Ella exploring the area. Being awoken in modern times, she had a lot to learn and get used to, part of it being her king is no more. The body is gone, and the tomb ransacked. She failed, and this weighs heavy on her shoulders through the journey. She agreed to follow Graves, sensing a nobility to her, Ella already having Thomasin by her side while Graves had no one. She is skilled in battle, if not unsure of herself due to her failings during both in the past, and while she was asleep.

She holds herself to high standards, almost impossible for her to meet, but no one else. She does not expect others to keep up her strict training regime, it is for her alone to shoulder the burden of being known as a failure. Despite that statement, Crusher constantly challenges her, and they’re often sparring with one another. In her off time, she enjoys weaving and is learning the modern trades of ‘sewing’ and ‘crochet.’ She enjoys making clothes for herself and others.

Her strict lifestyle doesn’t give her many moments to herself or to consider her feelings for others. She dedicates herself to a cause and thinks of little else. However she enjoys Grevious’ company. She does notice the occasional stares from others, such as Thomasin from Ella’s team, and she wonders what it could mean. Does she resent her for not joining Ella? It seemed only fair at the time.

Grevious - Dragapult - she/her - bi Vietnamese - trans woman - age 45

The ghost of a test pilot that went down during a new dirigible’s trial run over Galar. Her body was never found, believed to be incinerated by the blast, and her spirit has hung on to the area as she never got a proper burial. Graves, hearing her plight, followed her to her remains, giving her the burial she deserved. Freed from her prison, she was free to pass on, but she denied doing so, she had to repay Graves for her service. And so, she was conscripted to the gym challenge, one she had seen many travelers pass by speaking of such a thing and she was always curious just what exactly it was. She had heard things of course, but nothing is better than first hand experience.

Grievous is a very noble person, but not too stuffy either. She loves a good joke, she loves puns, and she loves giving people a good fright with her ghostly status. It’s all in good fun, she’d never do anything malicious or something that would genuinely harm others! She loves to fly, she had always loved to fly, and dying didn’t exactly rob her of that love. Now she can do it without a plane! She spent so long as spirit, she kind of forgot what having hobbies is like, and she’s trying new things!

She’s a very motherly person, and, being the oldest of the group, feels very maternal towards all the young little ones around her. She’s particularly concerned for Graves and Blitz upon hearing around their upbringing. That’s no way to treat a child! She does her best to tend to the others of the group. Though she would be lying if she didn’t say that Crusher pushed her buttons more than once.

Thrasher - Obstagoon - they/them - lesbian Black - transmasc nonbinary - age 24

Thrasher comes from a foster home full of wayward kids who grew up on the downward spiral of life, and they themselves weren’t an exception. Originally from Spikemuth, they never knew their parents and their foster home travels were rough. No one seemed to want to keep them, and at one point they got sick of it and ran away from home. They ran and ran and never looked back, and found a job working in the professor’s lab in Postwick. They didn’t ask them where they were from, nor tried to contact anyone else, so it was good for them. They met Graves early into their gym circuit and decided to join her to perform some field work for the professor.

They’re quite down on themselves, never feeling like they’ll accomplish anything of worth. They couldn’t be a good child, they’re not a good battler, it took them a while to come into their own, and Crusher needling them constantly didn’t help. In their spare time, they play guitar and sing covers of existing songs. They don’t have a knack for writing, just another thing they fail at. It’s been a tough life, and they stumble along the way constantly trying to get to a better tomorrow.

Thrasher is a shy sort when it comes to their feelings, they haven’t been engendered into showing their vulnerable side to others. And Graves’ group isn’t exactly what you’d call family. But it’s a nice change of pace and they almost feel… wanted. And Grevious is a nice addition to their life. To have such a motherly person doting on them is, well, a dream come true.

Tarot as Representations

So one of the recommended uses I talk briefly about in my zine, tarot in the time of the apocalypse, is to use tarot cards as icons in a parred down travel altar set up. What I didn't get into too much is how to select these cards to use as representations. I wrote the zine originally with a more experienced practitioner in mind and thought that most folks would select a card based on intuition.

Which will totally work. But recently as I was using cards to set up a petition, I realized there was a lot more I could have said there. Some of it

Astrological Representations

So a lot of people know that Tarot has astrological associations. I knew about a lot of these but I've been learning about so many more recently. You can use these associations to create representations of your work with the planets for petitions, prayers, or other workings. If you have decks you don't need, you can us the card as a base to attach paper talesmins to and give them some rigidity while adding to the correspondences (good for if you need to tuck it in a car visor or a book). Really there are so many options for using tarot as representation for astrological concepts.

The classical planets and the 12 zodiac signs are the most agreed upon from what I can tell and they are as follows.

Classical Planets

Moon - the High Priestess

Sun - the Sun

Mercury - the Magician

Venus - the Empress

Mars - the Tower

Jupiter - the Wheel of Fortune

Saturn - the World

The Moon card is traditionally associated with the sign of Pisces but I've swapped these out a few times and not noticed a major difference. I have also substituted Judgement for Saturn when not working with them in an earthly or cthonic capacity and that's worked alright for me. I try to stick to the traditional associations when reading a spread but when picking a representation it seems like it's slightly less important.

Outer Planets

Uranus - the Fool

Neptune - the Hanged One

Pluto - Judgement

These are less agreed upon but what I've found most common. I use them when reading but I will swap them out when picking a representation. I think they work okay for the most part. But truthfully I don't work with the outer planets a whole lot and don't often need a representation of that.

Zodiac Signs

Aries - the Emperor

Taurus - the Hierophant

Gemini - the Lovers

Cancer - the Chariot

Leo - Strength

Virgo - the Hermit

Libra - Justice

Scorpio - Death

Sagittarius - Temperance

Capricorn - the Devil

Aquarius - the Star

Pisces - the Moon

Just as a note, the signs also correspond with parts of the body and can be used to represent requests or petitions in that way too. I have some times used the Emperor (the sign of the head) and the Moon (the feet) to represent that my request is for my whole body. It's too much to fit into this article but it's easy to find on Google and something to add into the language of what you can represent.

Representing Fixed Stars

It's become more popular to work with fixed stars of the Zodiac (Deneb Algredi, Algol, Regulus, etc) and one way I've been using to set up an altar to the ones I work with is to select the tarot card that corresponds to the decan that the fixed star is found in and par it with the Star card.

The decans and card associations are too many to list here but the principle is fairly straight forward.  There are 4 elements of the zodiac (Fire, Earth, Air, Water) and they correspond with the four suits of the Tarot (Wands, Pentacles, Swords, Cups; respectively). The Aces embody the elements themselves. Without the Aces, each suit has 9 cards, that are then divided by the three modalities of the Zodiac (Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable). Each of these modalities has three cards representing the three decans of each sign. Each decan covers 10 degrees of a sign and have associations themselves.

Cardinal signs are at the beginning of each season, so they are equated with the beginning of each suit (2,3,4). Fixed signs are in the middle of each season, so they are equated with the middle of each suit (5,6,7). Mutable signs are at the end of each season, so they are equated with the end of each suit (8,9,10). Using this you can figure out what decan belongs with which sign.

Say you want to represent Algol, who is at 26 degrees Taurus. Taurus is a Fixed (5,6,7) Earth (Pentacles) sign. 26 degrees is between 20-30 and so is in the last decan of Taurus. Meaning the card you'd select would be the 7 of Pentacles.

Sun, Moon, Rising

So on occasion, when I realize I probably won't be using a deck but I want to keep it around, I'll pull a few of the cards and use them as artwork. One way I've done that is by displaying my Sun, Chart Ruler, and Rising Sign using Tarot Cards. I don't have any presently to show as an example but I will get stiff paper, attach cards in a grid, and put it in a cheap frame. Now that I know the decans, I would also include the decans in addition to or replacing the sign cards. I use the World here for Rising Sign because it has felt right to me and at one point incorrectly learned Saturn as being associated with Judgement so I still use that when laying out cards for this kind of artwork.

For instance:

The Sun - The Chariot - 2 of Cups

The World - The Devil - 3 of Pentacles

Judgement - The Star - 3 of Swords

Hell of a combination, I know. The reason I've done Chart Ruler instead of Moon is purely because I have a total solar eclipse in my natal chart so they'd use the same sign and decan cards and this way I don't have to have a second deck.

I'm actually working on turning this layout into a spread/worksheet. More on that in another post though.

Deity Representations

I have used tarot cards as deity representation a lot in my practice, especially with travel altars as I mentioned. But it really could be extended to others as well. This is where there's more intuition and less structure to go off of so what I say here is by no means law. Artwork of the cards themselves will dictate quite a lot.

For the Greek and Roman deities associated with the planets, the choice is pretty easy; the Magician can be a representation of Mercury, the Empress for Aphrodite, etc. For Kemetic deities that were syncretized with Greek and Roman deities, you can also use those correspondences too. I have used the Magician card to stand in for both Hermes and Yinepu for instance.

For other deities, my recommendation is to stick with the court cards as your basis. These already are often read as actual people in a given situation and the artwork in a lot of decks will only include a single person - which is just helpful for me personally when using it as a representation in an altar set up.

However, where you want to call a deity in a specific role, combining a court card and a major arcana can be really powerful. When I use the cards in my work the Morrigan, I always use the Queen of Swords as my base. But if I want to call her in her role as prophetess, I might combine the Queen of Swords and the High Priestess. If I want to call her in her role as battle raven, I might combine the Queen of Swords and the Tower.

If you work with the Elements as entities or as guardian spirits, you can utilize the Aces for their representation as they are the embodiment of the purest qualities of each element. This also works in combination with a Court Card for deities you are calling in connection with their association with an element. Say if I wanted to represent Geb, I might use the King of Pentacles and the Ace of Pentacles.

Ancestor Representation

I have not done a lot of this personally though in the times I have tried it, it has worked pretty well. Court Cards not only refer to people but often have associated ages as well and in a pinch I've used the Court Card associated with the gender and age that someone passed away. I have not used this yet for someone who has passed away that was nonbinary but I would probably default to using the Knight or the Page as they're less gendered, even though they correspond with younger age groups. It's imperfect and I'll write more on this later as it evolves.

The age groups associated with the court cards (as I learned them) are:

Page: young, usually under 35

Knight: someone mid career, age 35 - 50

Queen and King: someone at their height or who has reached old age, 50+

I tend to pick the suit for what they were most known for; were they really emotionally oriented (Cups), did they work really hard (Pentacles), were they especially known for their intellect (Swords), or were they fiery and artistic (Wands)?

If you want to use the cards to honor your dead generally, you can always use a representation of a psychopomp who opens the way for you if that's a part of you practice. You can also just use the Death card, perhaps in combination with the Six of Cups. I am much more likely to do this than represent a specific ancestor but I have needed to on occasion and this is roughly what I used.

Spellwork Representations

This honestly could - and hopefully will - be it's own article or zine at some point but I did want to mention a little bit on using the cards for spellwork on the fly. The main ways I've used them so far is either to petition the spirits of the Major Arcana for assistance or use the pips to specify what I want to happen.

The former is pretty straight forward. I personally have found the Major Arcana to be spirits in of themselves, which makes sense to me coming from a Chaos magic background, and I have petitioned them with offerings like I would any other spirit. The Magician has seemed to be most open to this so far but others are helpful in their own ways.

The latter works the best if you've worked with the cards long enough to understand their concrete meanings. Often beginners will have these very general understandings, that are still accurate by all means, but hard to take action on. If you're at a point in your tarot practice where you can see for instance the 4 of Wands know it's connotations with marriage and contracts or the 9 of Swords associations with bringing on nightmares, then this method should work for you.

Sometimes I'll combine this with a deity representation and lay a pip before it as my petition and then give offerings and burn a candle or incense. Just using them as representations for what I want to happen alone hasn't worked well but using them in combination with something else has. Have someone walk over the 5 of Pentacles or 3 of Swords enough times and there will be consequences. Just as walking under the 6 of Wands or the 10 of Cups will bring blessings.

Conclusion

So I hope this was helpful to someone out there. It's been super helpful for me to just grab my deck and go in so many situations. I can grab it and then scrounge for offerings when I get some place and not feel like I'm without something core to what I need.

And I know there are so many variations on this. This is by no means the be all end all of how you can use them and I do hope to expand on some of them in later writing, but I do think this is a decent springboard to experiment with.

Eda Clawthorne-The Owl House

Qualifications:

She has a magical chronic disorder which has flare-ups, is mitigated by taking medication (potions), and has similar side effects to many real disorders such as fatigue, greying hair, and physical impairment (drains magic, a natural ability of *most witches). Unlike in other stories however, her condition is NOT ever completely cured. It does evolve and become more manageable over the course of the story, but she still experiences symptoms from it. Eda also loses one of her arms later in the story. She does get a replacement hook, but it is never shown whether she has a functional prosthetic or not. Most likely, she only has one fully functioning arm after this. As for being queer, she is in a relationship with a nonbinary person and is all but confirmed bisexual (has a secret box with the bi flag on it seriously why else would she have this). Also the owl house has a Lot of queer characters in it and I mean. just look at her. I would be surprised if she wasn't queer somehow.

Bisexual, and has a curse that affects her day to day life

Bi & lost arm and has a chronic illness metaphorically

Propaganda:

Has canonically dated both men and a non-binary person. Her curse affects her ability to use magic (and at one point outright stops it), which is very important in witch life. Said curse also causes her body parts to fall off sometimes. Many have said her curse is like a metaphor for depression but really it's more like a magic version of a physical disability (although I wouldn't be surprised if she actually also had depression).

Amaya-The Dragon Prince

Qualifications:

1- Deaf, uses sign language 2- Sapphic, married to a female elf

Deaf and not straight (I don't know if they've mentioned her suxuality in canon, but she's dating a woman)

She is in an explicit relationship with Janai (also female, very very gay) and is deaf.

Amaya is a general of the Katolis army. She is deaf since birth and communicates in sign language. She's the best warrior in the human lands and she is a raging lesbian.

Amaya is so cool. This is the only time I have ever seen a memorable Deaf/HOH person on a children's tv show. Her disability is dealt with really well. She isn't pitied for it. On the contrary, she's a fricking general! Did I mention she's cool? In terms of queer stuff, she's married to a literal queen (actually I haven't seen the show in a while, so its at the very least a queen-adjacent figure), and they're so cute together and every time I see them it makes me stim. Also she's just a really great character in general (no pun intended). Like, she will hunt you down and kill you if you so much as give her nephew a papercut. She's such a badass like genuinely.

She's a knight and a cool aunt and I love her!

Amaya and her partner, Janai, are the classic enemies-to-lovers couple. Amaya, although deaf, does not let her disability stop her from being the best soldier of her kingdom and has rightfully taken the position of general. She's so badass, but also kind and loving. She's just amazing.

As I said before, she is a raging badass lesbian who is engaged to the queen of Sunfire Elves, who is also the best warrior in this elven nation. Her fiancee is learning sign language for her. They are so in love it physically hurts!!!!

I'm bad at the propaganda thing but I'll give it a try She uses ASL and has an interpreter she's close to. She's also a General of her home kingdom... up until she gets captured by an enemy princess and falls in love. Now that princess is a queen, and as of the last episode they're engaged to be married. Also they share a bed and multiple kisses onscreen. Is a badass fighter, determined, fiercely protects those she loves

Okay so in this post you can find the basic premise of it

Some more things I'm probably gonna do:

Female/nonbinary protag (I haven't decided) (possibly a cyborg)

Ancient traps (of course)

Maybe evidence of a completely destroyed rebellion

Different cultures, all with different ways of operating and different views on the "perfection" experiments

The last member of their species kept a log and committed suicide after realizing there was no escape from the planet

All living beings on the planet were destroyed except for a few plants which over time evolved into different species and took over the planet before the first settlers came meaning any native life is plant based

I might have it that the settlers introduced animals from their own planets into the environment

Also, a little behind the scenes thing: I came up with this after playing a bunch of Hollow Knight and looking at the lore, so it started off like Hollow Knight and evolved into what it is now

I’m curious to know what you think about it yourself! I’m cis, so I both don’t have a personal stake in it as a headcanon, and don’t have the background in trans critiques of literature to know where this ranks.

My experience is really affected by my experience growing up as a Tammy fan where my growing queerness, social debates around gay marriage, and Tammy’s accelerating support for the LGBT community all twined together. My major time in Pierce fandom was 1999-2007, also known as ages 12-20.  This was also a time when the Internet was really small and Pierce fandom was less than a thousand people. So for me, Tammy was a (as far as I know) heterosexual cis woman who noticed that her fandom was full of LGBTQ+ kids, and she hung out with us--talked on the messageboards, came into our chatrooms--and decided that since she was on our side, she was going to work to educate herself on these issues and try to write fantasy that gave us positive representation.

My experience has been watching Tammy grow and evolve over the last 20 years as she’s really challenged herself. At a time where there was almost no positive LGBT+ rep in fantasy, she saw how important it was to her fans and started to challenge herself. At first in the the industry standard was that if you included LGBT rep, your book was GOING to get banned and challenged in a lot of places, so in the late 90s and early 00s she wrote really close friendships like Lark and Rosethorn or Lalasa and Tiane, and then confirmed that they were romantic couples in fan communities. Then, as the culture changed, things levelled up, until you had Daja’s romance as a major plot thread in 2005′s Will of the Empress. 

For me, that timing is kind of critical--I started reading her books in maybe 1997, when I was 10. When I was 12 I knew I was bisexual. I was about thirteen or fourteen when I found out that Tammy was acknowledging on fansites that Lark and Rosethorn was a thing, and also that in the original draft of Song of the Lioness, Thom and Roger were a couple but she was glad she cut that, since it would be bad representation, and it was as my country was debating gay marriage (2002-05, also my time in Catholic high school, which was not fun) that we saw Lalasa/Tiane, and a little hint at trans rep in Lady Knight, and I’d just graduated when we got Will of the Empress and Daja.

That history, of both personal connection with her and the feeling that she was a visible ally who really risked something to speak out for people like me, can’t help but colour the affection through which I view everything she’s done since. I know that many fans of my generation don’t feel like that--they’re kind of like me and the Valdemar books, where picking them apart and criticizing them to hell is an essential part of unfucking our childhood damage.

I don’t know how fans of newer generations feel, which is why I’m curious. I’m also not trans, so I don’t know how more nonbinary or genderqueer people feel, other than the initial celebration on the Tumblr post.

I need to redesign Kenyon because his current design is Boring and his character has evolved quite a bit, but I have NO IDEA how I want to design him. He's definitely gonna stay human, like Jethro, but I can't figure out what design angle I wanna tackle with him.

I love Scratch's new design with the patch jacket, confidence boost, and masc style (she's nonbinary, uses she/her pronouns, and presents masc, and I love her for it)

Jethro has always and will always be fabulous as hell and requires No Redesign but I definitely want to draw him more. Although once he's off the ship and sticking with the core group, he won't be taking his gun along. That's specifically for mowing down armies of monsters in defense of the port towns under the crew's protection. And I need to learn to draw faces so y'all can see what he looks like under that mask. His suit is still badass as hell and I still don't know how he came to me in a dream. My subconscious is better at design than me.

I also need to actually draw designs for Keffel and Quaver (the two maned wolf-coatimundi characters) Recently came up with new designs for Ayomide and Cassiel, plus new characters I thought up listening to certain songs.

DJ Foxtrot, who technically has existed in my brain for ages but I never got around to actually drawing him. Wears a fox hoodie and a fox skull mask (songs - Stronger by Prismo, Solo by Prismo, Fearless by Lost Sky)

Roland 808, essentially a dubstep robot DJ (songs - so many dubstep, but especially Dubba Jonny's dubstep tutorials set)

Centaur but instead of a horse it's a monitor lizard and instead of a human torso it's what a deer would look like if it were a carnivore and the whole thing is doused in eldritch horror

Sword lesbian centaur knight. She is her own noble steed. Character design still in the works (song - you should see me in a crown by Billie Eilish)

Journal Update

So I’ve had more days that I’ve forgotten to journal and I still haven’t set an alarm up yet to remind me to post my journal entries every week or so. Well...here we go.

January 20th- Dyed my hair some shade of red today. I like how it looks. My school bag is packed and I’m ready for school tomorrow.

January 21st- First day of classes!! Bit anxious about my CS 2 class but that’s about it. Got to write my name on an assignment for the first time instead of using my deadname. It felt amazing.

January 22nd- Did the first bit of my reading for my Death and Dying Philosophy class. Had Shrimp and Lobster ravioli!! Did some research on what I want to do after graduation. I think I have a couple of ideas. Maybe something in computer science or cybersecurity.

January 23rd- Boring day but good. Spend the day on various school assignments and reddit. Got picked up late so my mom bought us Cane’s rather than cook dinner.

January 24th- Sore today. Didn’t do much, made today a lazy day. Had some leftover Cane’s.

January 25th- Went to my favorite Pokemon Go park for PoGo today and I caught a legendary with the help of some people at the park!! Had Cafe Zupas for lunch in trade for me helping my mom with some school related stuff. Ended the time out with some grocery shopping.

January 26th- Didn’t do much today. I don’t know if I want to journal on these lazy days but I do kind of want to journal something every day.

January 27th- Had an interview today for a volunteer position that I really want. According to the person I talked to the rest of the information will be emailed to me later that week (spoiler alert, it came later than a week but it came). Had a minor little freakout today when trying to work on my CS 2 assignment. Not a great sign. Paid rent, filled the water gallons, and cleaned the floors. Very productive today!!

January 28th- Had traffic on the way to school and that’s always a bad way to start the day. Spend way too long trying to work on my CS 2 assignment including going to the lab hours and not getting any help because other people needed help and then I just couldn’t find the TA/GA. Seriously debating dropping or auditing this class. On the way home, when I already have a headache, my legs hurt, my neck hurts, and I’m tired, some bitch slammed into the back of my mom’s car while we were at a stop light. My mom pulled into a parking lot and the bitch drove away. We’re okay. The bumper is falling off a little bit so that’s going to be an issue and I’m full of anger but we’re good.

January 29th- Finished the code for my class. Not a great assignment, couldn’t get it to do exactly what I wanted, but I turned something i. Need to be able to drop or audit this class but I’m worried about the impact that can have on my GPA.

January 30th- Back in some pain, possibly from the accident combined with being hunched working on my code.Talked to my mom about getting out of this CS 2 class and she seems fine with it as long as financial aid isn’t impacted.

January 31st through February 3rd- No journal. Must have forgotten.

February 4th- Had a fitness test in my basketball class and an exam in my computer class (for reference I have a computer class, basketball class, CS 2 class, IS class, and death class). Fitness test went better than expected, ran the suicides in 52 seconds. I’m stressing over the exam though. Haven’t dropped or audited my CS 2 class yet. I need to: I got a 22.75 out of 25 on the first assignment. Got confirmation that I got the volunteer position though!!

February 5th- Today is a very, very bad mental health day. Spent quite a bit of today crying, I just couldn’t seem to control it. I couldn’t figure out the code for my CS 2 class and I was stressing over it to the point where I was seriously considering whether plunging a knife into my neck would have been a bad idea. Spent some time lying in bed with a youtube video going trying to even out my emotions. Eventually managed to calm down and I spent the next few hours working on the code. Spend the rest of the day with a headache though.

February 6th- Last class of the day was cancelleed so my mom picked me up early. She had the idea of going to happy hour at Bahama Breeze and I wasn’t going to say no. Got to try two new drinks while out. Think I’m coming down with a cold or something.

February 7th- Definitely have a cold. Spent the day with a runny/stuffy nose and a scratchy throat. Couldn’t bring myself to do school work so I played Mass Effect instead.

February 8th- Went on a hike with some people I don’t know, it was being guided my a Park Ranger my mom knows (it was his last hike and technically he’s not a ranger anymore but whatever). The hike was nice and my mom and I talked about wanting to go on hikes more often, can’t wait for that to happen. Did some grocery shopping- a lot of walking, by the end of the day my legs hurt. Got a 78 out of 100 on my second CS 2 assignment. I need out now.

February 9th- Got told by someone in the Financial Aid office that I was clear to drop or audit the course!! Audited the class so that I can still learn what she’s teaching without having to worry about it impacting my grade.

February 10th- Worked on some school work. Not much else was done today. Got an email from about the volunteer position saying that I’ll be added to the shared drive soon. Very excited to start!!!
