i woke up to being on a couple of fic rec lists and really appreciated it, so i wanted to capitalize on the nice energy and make a list of some of my own favs that i've read recently that i didn't necessarily see on the other lists :D check these out because they have some of the best prose/plots/characterization that i've read in the fandom :] 💜

one soft infested summer (M, 18k+, 3/7 ongoing) by @wheelersboy - this one is perfect for all the highler fans out there! it's got stoner byler of course, a music festival, lots out camping, and some really amazing writing! i started it just for the fun stoner vibes because Why Not, but i'm staying for the beautiful writing and the really complex and delicate relationship mike and will have in this one

Light Sleepers (T, 15k+, 2/6 ongoing) by @helioleti - WillEl-centric fic set during the time gap between the end of s3 and the beginning of s4 that explores their dynamic and their respective problems with mike, all while trying to cope with moving across the country from everything they know. each chapter is meant to reflect a certain stage of grief, which fits so well with all the complicated emotions everyone is going through!

drank my poison all alone (T, 4k, one-shot) by silverluminoqity - mike gets vecna'd and has to face his past self who's ashamed of who he's grown up to be, and my dudes the writing goes SO HARD. by far one of the best mike gets vecna'd fics i've read with such a good take on his character

star eater (T, >1k, one-shot) by @lowlightt - another fic where the writing does not play. honestly if you have a few minutes, READ THIS FIC. it's mostly just a confrontation between will and vecna, but it's so so powerful and impactful. and again, i cannot state it enough: the writing is AMAZING

tell me again (you said yes) (M, 32k, 3/3 complete) by @willow-lark - hey remember when cleradin was like a Thing for a brief second a few months ago? well if you miss those vibes, or if you just like great writing and some of the best weaving of canon into a fantasy au i've ever read, please look no further than this fic (and it's first part, fireball him! (cast protection)). i love this one dearly and enjoyed the wonderful ways Lark wove canon (specifically s1) into such a different setting, plus it was nice to see many of the other characters play a role in the events. beautiful, astounding, heart-wrenching - and did i mention there's an elopement 👀

In Undertow (M, 17k+, 3/6 on-going) by @souverian-are-we - this and one soft infested summer have become my summer byler reads~ when i say i love this fic, i mean you will have to pry it from my cold, dead hands 🥰 we've got estranged byler, jancy engagement with some stoncy going on in the background, and most of the characters still reeling from the consequences of their final battle with the upside down. it's all set at a lake house, which provides some breathtaking/atmospheric writing that this author uses to their advantage. it has some of my favorite scenes i've ever read in fic too, ones that have literally taken my breath away

california show your teeth (T, 77k+, 10/19 on-going) by @fireflywitch - what if the Byers and Hopper families were from Lenora and moved to Hawkins? this fic takes this one simple premise and turns it into one of my favorite fics i've ever had the pleasure of following along with. it essentially functions as a retelling of s1 and s2, gives almost every main character that's been featured in the show thus far a lot of time and space for their own plots, all while culminating into one larger story underneath. i don't think i've read a fic quite like this one in terms of its scope, plotting, and characterization, because there are a lot of moving parts, but this author goes above and beyond. i cannot recommend it enough

all i know is pouring rain (and everything has changed) (T, 3k, one-shot) by @willelfanpage - i think i read this one at the beginning of my workday while i was running some report on my computer and had to go about the rest of my day as if everything was fine ahah :'D seriously though, it's 3k words that pack an emotional punch all while examining will's relationship to rain. the writing is just gorgeous, and it's a character study that i haven't really seen done before, which was quite enjoyable~

Chasing Heartlines by (T, 7k+, 1/2 on-going) @cherryisgone - if you liked Tip-Toeing on Lilypads then may i direct you to its sequel, which features so much pining mike that he might as well be a tree? again, if you like cleradin/fantasy aus, then Cherry my beloved has you covered 💜 it fits so neatly with Lilypads and provides some fun contrast between will and mike~

Touch Me Like You Know Me (M, 15k, 4/4 complete) by @starsarefire824 - this exists in the rare pantheon of fics that actually made me cry. imagine an estranged byler reunion with all the emotions turned up to an eleven, and lots of lingering on lost time and how life sometimes takes us places we never thought we'd go. it's absolutely beautiful and is a classic to me :]

come back to me and forgive everything (T, 78k, 18/18 complete) by @howtobecomeadragon - i saw a lot about this one when it was on-going but am only just now getting around to reading it, and all i can say is why did it take me so long to get to it :') this author does such a good job of writing will and mike's relationship with a lot of nuance and complexity while still managing to make them feel like the teenagers they are. basically, will has to spend every july at lonnie's house in indianapolis, and for this summer in particular, the event is a lot more emotionally impactful for both mike and will. there's lots of emotional depth, the complexities of coming out and/or realizing you're queer, and, at the heart of it, how two friends try to mend things between each other. it's so soft and sweet

that's all i've got for now!! i'm quickly running out of time on my lunch break :'D also haven't been writing as much, but it's been fun to read more and relax a bit. hope you guys enjoy these because they're genuinely some of the best stuff i've had the pleasure to read in a while 💜💜💜

Hi, first off, thank you so much that is so sweet!! I am honoured you have read all of my work and enjoyed them.

As for recs, I don't have nearly as many as I should because I don't read nearly enough fanfiction. But I'll give a few of my favs. I'm adding a cut-off cause there's actually more for me to recommend than I thought. My absolute, absolute favourites are marked in purple.

Shadowzel:

True Silver - mylordshesacactus. M, with a lil smut. One-shot. A famed piece of work in the Shadowzel community and for good reason. It is so beautiful; I think this the best characterisation of Lae'zel I've ever seen. Its a comforting post-game piece, about Shadowheart riding to the Astral Plane with Lae'zel and figuring out parenting together.

though i burn, how could i fall? - Jazzfordshire. E, some smut. One-shot. Shadowheart and Lae'zel fall in love during the game, rewritten with a lot of beauty and passion and direct quotes from the game. Very tender. The first Shadowzel fic I ever read. It was amazing.

Born Again - realdustybones. So far, M. Ongoing. I was hooked on the first paragraph. Post-game, Selunite Shadowheart ventures to the Astral Plane to seek help from Lae'zel, leading the rebellion with Orpheus and Voss, as she has become pregnant with Shar's heir. Amazing description, amazing characterisation, and very intriguing plot.

to feel love (like a sinner) - mermaiddrunk. E, just very smutty. One-shot. Okay, so this is a sex pollen fic. But its got a lil twist. And the atmosphere and longing in this fic are amazing; the relationship between the two is also very well done. There's a bit where Shadowheart jokes about an owlbear that I love. And also its just v hot smut soooooo

An'geth - tieflingliker. E, lots of smut and kink. Complete. Based during the game, Shadowheart and Lae'zel have the famed Knife Scene and realise they have one thing in common: they both have a chastity belt for devotion to their respective Gods.

Losing My Religion - Rina114. E, lots of smut and mild kink. Ongoing, last updated in Jan. Two lonely gals, abandoned by their goddesses, seek that reverence in each other. Lovely. Shadowheart teaches Lae'zel to 'let go,' shall we say.

The Favourite Princess of Murder and Loss - Heckpup. E, violent and dead dove. One-shot. Shadowheart is the chosen of Bhaal and Shar alike. She puts Lae'zel through the torture. Not for the faint-hearted and very fucking tragic. But I do love my angst; fics being able to make me feel so much pain is very talented and reminds me I am an itty bitty baby human.

I Wanna Be Your Dog - meowff. E, lots of smut and horniness and longing. Ongoing. Last updated Nov. Maintenance worker / cam girl porn set up. Shouldn't work nearly as well as it does, but it is a masterpiece. Amazing description. Amazing modern characterisations. Has one of my favourite descriptions of Shadowheart, comparing her to old oil portraits. Beautiful. And, yes, very hot.

Bleeding Hearts - calorem. E, some smut. Ongoing. Last updated March. I've only read the first 3 chapters of this but its amazing so far. Fake dating Au with a dashing of murder and intrigue. We are all hungry for fake dating aus, lets face it.

Gone. - teiflingliker. M, pure fucking tragedy. One-shot. Selunite Shadowheart waits for Lae'zel, still loyal to Vlakiith, to come home. I just read this and oh boy do I need a cuddle. So sad. So beautiful. So hard to get through. Just so tragic.

Now, there are loads more amazing Shadowzel fics out there that I simply haven't had the chance to read. Cellphish, ToriWritesStories, larissel---everyone on the Shadowzel server does amazing work. They are all very passionate writers. Read any of them!

Other Pairings:

Dame Aylin's Home for Wayward Girls - SheOfBadIdeas. Shadowheart/Aylin/Isobel. E, very tender smut and lots of fluff. Very minor angst. Complete. What can I say about this fic? Converted me to the OT3 instantly. It is so tender and loving, and respectful and funny and healing. The characterisation, descriptions....it's all amazing.

Be My Comfort - MiPur. Shadowheart/Tav. E, tender and longing galore. Ongoing. Shadowheart works as an escort at Sharess' Caress, based in modern day. She meets Naivara, who hires her, and there's an immediate and intense connection between them and Shadowheart does not know why. Just very intriguing fic that has me trying to figure out what's going on. And for real, it is very tender. And we have Nym, who is a rare character in BG3 fics!

broken glass to diamonds - within_a_dream. Shadowheart/Aylin/Isobel. E, kink and mild smut but no sex scene. One-shot. Look, I read the 'human furniture' tag and I clicked on it without hesitation, ok? Its a nice lil one shot.

Break You In My Image - QueenMills. Shadowheart/Viconia DeVir (but also not really). E, dead dove. Complete. I've posted about this in an ask I received. The writer is just so smart and poetic. Its about Shadowheart's time at the cloister as an adult, immediately before she leaves on her mission to get the githyanki artefact. Its not for the faint of heart, though, because it is messed up (in the best way possible, you could analyse this fic for a literary essay I s2g).

Haunt Me. Love Me. Take Me Home. - QueenMills. Shadowheart/Shar. Shadowheart/Viconia DeVir. E, dead dove and strong themes of alcoholism, drug use, suicide. Ongoing, last updated Feb. Again just fuuuuuuuck, man. Shadowheart, messed up after her divorce from Lae'zel (and fucked up from an abusive relationship with her mother Viconia) goes to therapy. She falls in love with her therapist. Her therapist? Shar. Modern au. This author is a genius. I seriously feel like I'm reading a poem when I'm reading it; their writing style really gets you into the mindset of POV, and it's beautiful and fucked up.

Oh also, I like a few works by anotheropti - just read anything by them and you'll enjoy it. They got a lot of kink and I very much appreciate that. Most work centres Shadowheart/Tav.

And, obviously, I'm just going to say you should read any and every F/F Dark Justiciar fanfic that exists. The complexity and depths of her character are tragic and beautiful and amazing. And sadly I HAVEN'T READ ENOUGH OF THEM BECAUSE I'VE BEEN TOO BUSY WRITING MY OWN. (also pls pls pls people write more f/f dj shart fics I'm on my knees begging, I need more of this like the blood in my veins)

So Much For Stardust - Chapter 1 - Cringe_Is_Dead (A_Plethora_Of_Peters) - Hermitcraft SMP [Archive of Our Own]

Quick summary for context, it follows human Skizz after he was abducted from earth by the "Defectors" and essentially tortured and treated like an animal before being rescued by space cops. Team ZIT is a group of scientists whose job is to determine how intelligent alien species are, and they're tasked with figuring it out for Skizz in order to know what crime the Defectors will be convicted of (were they poaching & murdering animals or people?). But they don't speak English, so good luck with that. And Skizz has trauma. :]

Now excuse me while I wax eloquent on random things about the art and the fic itself:

I don't think it's difficult to tell, but my favs are Impulse and Skizz lol. I don't usually like drawing them all so differently from their minecraft skins (especially Tango, in this case), but decided to just go all out making them look a lil alien and I think I went too far for Imp. Might redo, give him more skin instead of scales. Also, his clothes r just grey bc I couldn't figure out what colors to give that wouldn't clash horribly lmao.

Also in case you couldn't tell, I ADORE the hurt/comfort this fic has, the concept is so fascinating and just PERFECT for this kinda thing, the angst is delectable. It's the kind of fic where the longer you consider the scenario that Skizz is in, the more tragic and heartbreaking it gets, for everyone involved. I tried drawing a couple other hug/comfort scenes but scrapped them bc I didn't like how they turned out, might retry later.

As for the fic itself, I'm very excited to see where it goes, hanging on the edge of my seat. I only learned about it like 5 days ago and I think I've read it 3 times (AND ITS OVER 100k WORDS???), not to mention how I reread my favorite scenes over and over (chapter 10 ESPECIALLY, I tried to draw like 7 times but it was all hot garbage lol). I'm slightly worried but also itching to get to the climax they mentioned in the last update. I have a couple theories/ things I kinda want to happen.

First, they've mentioned a few times that ZIT doesn't have the data on what the Defectors actually did to Skizz, even though they should have had it from the start. This hints at 2 VERY juicy things, one, that they're being sabotaged. It seems the Defectors are trying to prevent ZIT from determining Skizz's sapience, and in the absolute worst-case scenario, I can see this going so far as them trying to hurt/kidnap/kill Skizz while he's under their protection, which would be just... evil >:))) and traumatizing. and scary. it would just be so juicy if they got separated after all this bonding and healing and growing love they got for each other. Idk if that's where it's going but we'll see. Second, they're already so devastated every day (especially Zed) by Skizz's obvious trauma and scars, breakdowns, triggers, etc, and they don't even know what happened. But if/when they do get their hands on that information, well... I imagine it'd absolutely break all three of them, to the point where they wouldn't even know what to do with Skizz, they'd feel incredibly guilty, angry, heartbroken, everything over him-- not to mention them becoming overwhelmingly protective over Skizz, wanting to just get retribution on the defectors, maybe break some bones, spill some blood, ya know. (PROTECTIVE IMPULSE PLEASEEEE). Meanwhile Skizz is just tryna eat gapples without hurling and narrowly avoiding panic attacks every time he sees Tango.

I could talk for hours about this, but I think that's enough for now lol. I shall continue to spin them around in my head for the next month, and you should too, I highly recommend.

hi! i know 'call the ocean waves ashore' was discontinued/dropped but i just wanna say that it was the first qzgs/tka oc-fic i saw at all in the fandom and what got me to look to see if i could find any others - consequentially finding honestly one of my current favs. i just reread it tonight and reading the plot notes on the last chapter has me so wistful - and longing imagining reactions of like, blademaster characters (hello huang shaotian, blue river, and lu hanwen) finding out that xia lan used to be athena? YX finding out that they both know WXF??? Anyways. Just wanted to drop by and say that like. even tho her story might be over i sincerely love her and her story very much, and thanks for writing what you did 💜💜

Thanks, glad you enjoyed that plot bunny! It was one of the first fics that I had very extensive plans for (as you can probably tell by the long plot outline that was shared in the last update) and even though not all of the details were fleshed out, there was a clear end that I intended to write towards. Obviously I didn't manage to get very far for that plot bunny, but it was a fun exercise while it lasted and I'm glad there were readers who enjoyed it nonetheless!

A few more bonus tidbits of stuff that never made it into the story:

-The new character that Xia Lan makes in the China server is male. Her half-brother coaxes her into playing by asking her to help him level up an alt account, so she made a male character. This causes various misunderstandings.

-Xia Lan, having no idea about the details of the early gaming scene in China, does not realize that Wu Xuefeng and Ye Xiu were teammates. When she gets in touch with Wu Xuefeng and convinces him to come help out, there is a shocked reunion that takes place as a result.

-Perhaps unsurprisingly, Xia Lan has an aversion to hot liquids. At one point, there's a near-accident when she's handed a plastic foam cup of too-hot soy milk by a vendor, and it takes her awhile to calm down in the aftermath. Ye Xiu is confused by the extreme reaction, but makes sure that their other teammates don't crowd her or overwhelm her.

The mystery behind this isn't solved until Xia Lan's scars are discovered and Cynthia publicly confesses what happened in GhostFyre.

#3 - What’s your favorite line of narration?

Chapter 37 - Aftermath.

Lunging forward, you wrapped your arms around his neck and held tight, burying your face in his shoulder as you did all you could to keep your emotions in, squeezing the ring in your closed fist.

Freezing a bit, Jotaro was unsure what to do, his arms awkwardly held up. “…Why are you doing this?”

Letting out an teary chuckle into his shoulder, you squeezed him tighter. “Because I need a hug. And I think so do you.” Your voice cracked a bit, betraying how closely you actually were on the verge of tears and before he could properly think, Jotaro had wrapped his arms around your waist, holding you back.

Sitting there with you in his arms, it wasn’t for a moment before he shifted his hold, his right arm wrapping tighter around your midriff while his left travelled up your back, coming to rest on the hollow of your shoulder, where he used it to pull you closer into himself.

Feeling the raven push his face just that deeper against your collarbone, you smiled softly as you closed your eyes and held him back, memorising how every single bit of this moment felt.

There’s some dialogue in there but it’s needed to set the scene. Anyways, I like it a lot because it’s some of the more clear *ahem* affection shown ;3

Slow burn be slow burning, but love prevails

I have a super clear image in my head of how Jotaro moves in this scene and I really hope I conveyed it well. But yeah, I just love hugs starting loose but then one of the two giving in and just giving that tight hug that they need. I’m weak to it.

Chapter 26 - To India

Standing on the deck of the ferry, you were leaned onto the railing, fiddling with your ring while lost in thought.

A few hours ago you had left the hotel and boarded, scheduled to arrive in India in the afternoon, so now you had some time to kill.

"It is unwise to wander off alone, especially with what happened on the previous boats." A familiar deep and rich voice suddenly spoke out from behind you, breaking through your thoughts as you turned back to see Avdol standing there, smiling at you.

"Oh, I'm sorry, didn't mean to worry you. I though I was still close enough." You apologised and Avdol walked forward, placing a comforting hand on your shoulder.

"No need to apologise. I myself was not worried. It seems you've wormed your way into the hearts of the Joestars though." Sending a confused smile his way, the Egyptian man chuckled softly, a warm and deep sound. "It is not my place to say, but Mr. Joestar did ask me to find you."

"Oh, well thankfully I wasn't too far then." You smiled back but the man picked up in the slight forcefulness of it.

"What bothers you, Y/N?"

"Eh?"

"I'm a fortune teller by trade, reading someone's body language is a requirement and I can see your uneasiness. What's wrong?"

Blinking a little stunned at him, you finally properly turned to him. "I don't know..."

"But you do."

Opening your mouth, you then closed it again, looking at the floor for a second. Suddenly, you felt a warmth envelop you from behind, draping over you like a cape and you glanced down to see red, feathery arms around your shoulders, lightly holding you.

"Oh, I apologise." Avdol spoke, blushing just the tiniest bit, seeming a little startled by his own Stand acting out like that. "It's a habit I picked up on doing in my years of readings, whenever someone became distressed or sad. Never before has anyone been able to see Magician's Red when I do it however."

Yet while he apologised, you smiled softly, instantly feeling more at ease. Despite being off the coast of India, the sun shining down warmly most of the time, Magician's Red did not produce a heat at this moment feeling like actual heat, more akin to simply the feeling that being enveloped in warmth brought. "It's okay. It's nice actually..."

"Ah, I'm glad then." Avdol relaxed. "So, what ails you? Is it to do with the Stand attack?" Just simply nodding softly, the man hummed. "I can understand. But it is not your fault you got attacked by a Stand user."

"I know, I just feel... I don't know why I feel like this actually." You sighed and Avdol nodded wisely.

"Hm. Well, feelings are complicated. Just because you don't know why you have them does not mean they are invalid."

"I guess."

Shaking his head softly, you felt Magician's Red get a firmer grip on you from behind while Avdol grabbed both of your shoulders. You looked up, seeing a conviction in his eyes and just like this morning, a knowing look as he opened his mouth. "You have just as much a place in this team as all of us. Even if you may think you're not as useful, your Stand coming out and attacking was the reason Jotaro was able to defeat the user. We all get attacked and we all deal with it together. Polnareff got ambushed in his room back in Singapore And Jotaro just a few hours later. Do you understand what I'm saying?"

Taking a deep breath, you looked up at the man in front of you, a small smile on your face. "Can I... hug you?"

Letting out a pleasant laugh, Avdol opened his arms.

You walked straight into his chest, enveloped in a hug while you felt Magician's Red disappear. "Anytime, Y/N. Whenever you need one, just come straight to me."

This whole scene with Avdol has my heart in the first place, but I highlighted 2 lines in particular. The first because- well I don’t know. There’s just something about it that I love. Avdol showing trust in your abilities, yet conveying also that Joseph and especially Jotaro have a protectiveness over you. And then Avdol also being respectful by not talking about Jotaro’s (obvious) feelings like the king that he is.

And then later of course Avdol just being Avdol. Wise, kind, making sure you know it’s okay to feel no matter what. A thing we all need to keep in mind, in my opinion.

I just love Avdol. Need that man’s hugs (and warmth, my hands are freezing)

But yeah, those are my favourites I think :3

Oooh, dialogue!!! Lmao, I skimmed through the ENTIRETY of PTS and NLW thus far to try and pick a fav.... There's a few fahsdghsdg but I think I'm going to go with this one, from chapter 1 of NLW

Just because I think it was my first attempt at being, like, FUNNY? There's HUMOR throughout PTS and the various one-shots, bc TMNT 2012 is very funny at its core, but this was a straight-up attempt at, like. A joke dsahglsdgk. Which I was very insecure about, tbh! Like it is SO easy for a joke to fall flat, which I guess is true of all writing, but I was a lot more nervous about the jokes not landing than the seriousness, for whatever reason. And NLW is still quite serious, but it has a much more humorous tone than PTS, so. It was either going to work, or it wasn't.

But I thought it worked! I got several positive reactions to this bit in particular (always a great feeling), and I was very happy with how in-character it felt (to me). Donnie's frustration, Raph's deadpan, Casey's general dumbassery (/aff), the way they all bounced off of each other, I thought it turned out well c:

fdhalsghkgkl tbh, probably the massive amounts of angst? which may seem very counterintuitive as it's like My Whole Brand, but genuinely I always feel so awkward about it XD Like at SOME point someone is going to be like "hey, what the FUCK is wrong with you" and I will have no answer.... like, damn, at least if I wrote smut that's something people GET. but no, I love when my favorite characters suffer.

I know that's not exactly WEIRD, it's a very common thing people say, but I always have this thought in the back of my head like "you're taking it too far. they like angst, but they still think you're a freak."

Writing is definitely not happening the way it usually does for me (and this weekend has been Very Stressful, my cat is really sick and things aren't looking so good, he's not keeping food down at all and hasn't been for about three days and also it's my one year anniversary with my gf today and this has put a bit of a damper on it)

Anyways!! I really just have the plot for it 😂 basic rundown is Bruce finds out about the league bases and gets into a huge argument with Tim which results in the outlaws taking him in during the fallout. JayRoy have been hooking up but they don't know how to address the whole having feelings for each other thing because they both think it's one-sided. I actually haven't written anything for that pairing yet/at all BUT my girlfriend has been begging for it (literally even was like 'you can give it to me as a birthday or a hannukah gift!! 😂) BUT I have written fics with Roy in them! I'm starting to get more comfortable writing him now.

Here's what he's in!

Roy is in Rooftops & Bookshops, but not very much. He's pretty much only in a short scene in chapters 9 and 12 each, other than a few background mentions along the way.

He's also in Pieces of Me (Pieces of You), and he's in two of the three chapters and plays a significant role in the plot

He's in Non-Refundable Plans, but he really only has a few lines (it's a one shot anyways), this is the one he's in the least by far

BUT he is in Know Yourself a significant amount! Every chapter, plenty of lines, scenes alone with Jason, scenes alone with Tim! This fic is ongoing but is NOT abandoned!! I'm struggling with it a bit right now but I am actively working on it. If you want to see how I write Roy or want to read something I wrote that has Roy in it, this is definitely my top recommendation for that!

1. What is your absolute all-time favourite ideas you’ve ever had?

Honestly, I don't really know. All my favorite ideas I usually use for a wip and I don't really have a all-time fav.

2. Is there a question you’ve been asked in the past that really stands out to you, and you still think about sometimes?

Lately I've been seeing worldbuilding posts that say something along the lines of "do you know have to know every little detail about the world? is it relevant to the plot to know exactly which plants grow in each season? if it isn't, you don't have to figure that out." (plant thing example). It's a great reminder that sometimes the nitty-gritty details aren't needed and that worldbuilding can be more manageable.

3. What is your favourite part of being a writer? What parts could you take or leave?

My favorite part of being a writer is the storytelling and the adventures that I can make the characters go on. I enjoy daydreaming about the adventures and coming up with ways they would tackle different situations. What I don't enjoy is finding the precise words for each of those situations, especially the important lines. I tend to forget the words right when I need them which makes the entire feat annoying and the first few drafts will have tons of bracket placeholders.

4. What is your greatest motivation to write/create?

I love the process of creation and getting caught up in the mess of ideas. One of the greatest motivations is getting inspired or new ideas. Lately, I've been drawing and reading more and generally trying to balance all of my creative passions more which is something I haven't done for literal years. It's both exciting and strange at the same time. I still create and get into the mess of the/my process which is the best part for me, just in a different way.

5. What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever read or been given as a writer?

Use brackets [ ] as placeholders when you're writing in order to keep your flow. I've depended on this for my initial drafts for my wips since it's the only way I can make sure I can keep writing without feeling bogged down with details that I can fill in later.

6. What do you wish you knew when you were first starting out writing?

It's okay to write scenes out of sequence and then piece it together afterward. If writing chronologically dampens your creative process, writing whatever scene comes to you is okay.

7. What is your favourite story you’ve written to completion? Link it if you’d like and can!

Nothing yet so far. I've posted one chapter of you still would've been mine but I'm not really happy with it.

8. What is your favourite out-of-the-box quote?

I don't really have any favorite quotes. I do enjoy clever or inspirational lines but I don't think about them often enough to remember them.

9. Which of your characters would you say has the most controversial mindset? Why do you say so, and how do you personally feel about their ideals?

Rowan Reyes, 100%. They're anti-capitalist, anti-government, anti-rich, to just name a few movements. They're incredibly passionate and motivated and don't let things like government confidentiality stop them. I feel like this is a lot more radical than most people believe and the topics would definitely start arguments at family dinners or on twitter. Personally their ideals are a lot more intense than mine but it's something new to explore. It's very suited for their role in their story along with their society.

10. If you, when you first started writing, met you now, what would younger you think?

I would be surprised at my career path and would be surprised that I read more fanfiction than novels lately. I used to be REALLY into reading and so the shift in what I read would be surprising. Also, I'd be surprised that fanfiction exists point-blank. It's what I wanted as a kid but I didn't even imagine that it would be possible. Oh and that I transitioned. (again, something child me didn't even imagine to be possible)

2. Share your favorite part of your first ever fic

Oh, my first ever fic is Bury me in the shadows in spring, and actually in a few weeks it's going to be my anniversary as I started writing this fic (and AruAni fics in general!).

SO, my fav part from BMSS... oh, I guess, it's the scene from chapter 2:

The blond gulps and rests his eyes on hers for a few more heartbeats, and then stands up. He looks at the name one more time - “ Gymnopédies”. Hmm, another French composer. She definitely has some preferences, huh? Carefully, he puts the record on the player, and suddenly, everything changes.  Silver rainy drops seem to be the bravest thing in the world, as they keep falling, falling, falling down from the sky - like the monotonous, infinite heartbeat of clouds. The rain continues to pour at a steady pace, and the timid piano sounds flow into the watery symphony outside the window, making ripples with its gentle, sensual tune. His breath, his heartbeat, his heat, his blood - everything dive into sleep. There’s no past, there’s no future, there’s even no present, and the sense of time has erased the same second the needle hit the record. There’s only now , only this exact instant that he wants to embroider over his body with the tight stitches of his memory - maybe, “forever” is the word that was created not for people, but for the moments like that.  The man makes a tentative exhale and slowly tiptoes with his eyes to look at the woman. He finds her eyes already on him, but when their gazes meet - she doesn’t avert it. Instead, the blonde gives him the small curve of the smile, and he can swear - he sees feeble sparkles in her eyes. But what surprises him more - he returns the gesture.  “Can I draw you?”  The simple question. The simple words. The simple request. And yet, it hits him like the infernal waterfall in a foreign language he doesn’t even surely exist in this world.  Did he hear her right? Or is this his twisted imagination one more time? Is he dreaming? Is he drunk again?  The woman doesn’t break her glance, but he sees how her fingers tightly squeeze the fabric of the sofa she might rip it, and her finger starts again to imitate the rhythm of the raindrop with her nervous tapping.  Her body doesn’t hide the tension she keeps in herself, like the strained, violin string.  However, without an answer from his end, the blonde repeats.  “Can I draw you?” The melody has changed already, and it’s as mesmerizing as the first one, but the man can’t really care more about it when before him - he sees her.  Her, the blond straight bob haircut.   Her, the short and yet gracious posture.  Her, the determining gaze of the greyish blue eyes.  Her, the cozy pastel-colored robe.  Her.  Her.  Her. 

4. Fanfic authors can be harsh on themselves, especially with older work, share three things you like about your first fic

Oh, well, as I mentioned, my first fic is BMSS... and that's hard, but anyway!

I think, I really appreciate my approach with different languages and creating the vibe of the epoch here. I do some researches, dive into details to create the whole picture not only of 1920's but also of Eastern Europe after WW1.

7. What was the inspiration behind your shortest fic?

My shortest fic is Golden Hour of Our Forever, and I really hope it's not too much narcissist because the inspiration was my own artwork :D

I drew it, knowing the whole behind the scene story, but when I finished it, I felt the urge to write it down anyway.

11. What annoys you the most about your own writing habits?

I guess, what really irritates me is that I don't write really good outlines. I do it - but in perspective, I think I need to learn how to do it more properly.

13. Do you use symbolism when writing fics? Tell us about it!

A LOT. I guess, far too much... FAR TOO MUCH. Well, two of the most frequently used - it's nature and colors. I usually left the description of the environment, not only because I want to show more of the surroundings, but also create a particular mood that would challenge the events/feelings or, on the contrary, support them.

Colors, too, pay attention to the color I use, and it would open another layer of what I want to tell with the scene or the detail :D

14. Tell us about a detail you wrote that nobody has commented on yet.

Hm-hm-hm.... I guess, it's a motif from chapter 2 of MYLYSW, when the continuous Annie's "she didn't understand, but..." transformed through the years. How it was at first "she didn't understand, so she obeyed", then - "she didn't understand, but she didn't say anything either" -> "she didn't understand, but she listened" -> "she didn't understand, but she took a step forward" -> "she didn't understand, but she hoped".

A Tiny Q&A With Phillipe Bosher - Mycroft Holmes

On the last day of August, I started an impromptu Q&A with Phillipe Bosher - the voice of Mycroft Holmes in Sherlock Holmes Chapter One - on the Frogwares Discord server. It was spontaneous and fun, lots of other people joined in - a big thank-you goes to Phillipe for answering all of the burning questions and giving permission to post the chat log publicly.

Fav Mycroft line in SHCO?

pabosher: Ooooh - I don’t know! “It’s my house, actually!” is a line I do love, but also I love the break of the facade in “I saved my brother, he will never forgive me.” (I forget the exact wording). I love the whole writing of the final scene in the garden, it’s such a beautifully written bit, and I love the variations based on your choices!

Xiney: That line was really well delivered ! Like there was this tinge of sadness at the never forgive me part that sounded really heartbreaking

Tiny: That was my first ending and that line stayed with me as well!

(I know we meme the "my house" line a lot lol, but I love it because these two super smart men throw all logic out the window and it's just two siblings bickering for a few moments... it makes it super fun!)

Silly question #2: When you see Alex irl, how do you tell him "No shit, Sherlock"? If not, why?

pabosher: Hahaha good question pabosher: Haha! I’m really glad that came across in your hearing of it - I definitely felt that in the script, so really wanted it to sound petty and brotherly pabosher: In recording booths it can be really useful to get the physicality of the character in place, to help the lines pabosher: So for most of the session I stood very straight with my hands behind my back pabosher: And at that moment I completely broke that and it felt great haha

Tiny: Ok one more, it's more serious but I'm very curious! This is speaking just in general with voice acting - but do the casting directors (or whoever D: ) require you to be able to pronounce foreign words/sounds? I'm not sure if I'm phrasing this correctly, so please bear with me, lol.

having a heart attack after hearing Watson (from one of the older games) pronounce the most flawless ć I have ever heard, and Sherlock was pretty close as well.

Or how is it for you to be asked to pronounce sounds you may not be even able to hear, if that ever happened? (I don't recall anything like that in the Mycroft role specifically, so this is just generally speaking)

Tiny: (That's a bit messy, sorry, I'm struggling with phrasing my question :V)

pabosher: That’s a bigger question and one I think I’ll only be able to answer with regards to VA in general, nothing to do with Frogwares - But generally, pronunciations are something that’s locked early in a game. So if it’s a character name, the first person to say it is told by the director or studio how to say it, and then every other actor in the game will be played a voice file of that pronunciation to help keep things in check. Sometimes it’s missed, but that’s usually what people want to know pabosher: And yeah, to answer your question, we do care! A lot pabosher: Our whole job is language and pronunciation and speech pabosher: For me personally, I grew up speaking multiple languages so I have a few more sounds in my bank than the usual English person pabosher: It can be very difficult sometimes for me - if there’s a word that I know from a different language, and I’m used to pronouncing it with that accent and in that tongue, then trying to anglicise it, as if were, can be tough pabosher: But that’s why you have amazing developers, directors, writers, producers, editors who can be a part of the process and can catch you when you slip

Tiny: Thank you, yeah it's a general VA question I've been curious about - your role as Mycroft didn't include any words/lines that would fit what I was asking, so 🤔 but hearing pronunciations in other FW games made me think about it, because they got it right so well. Tiny: What languages do you speak?

pabosher: Russian and English, and a very small smattering of the Romance languages

I like the mystery!! I was bitten by a dog when I was younger, and had 37 stitches in my upper lip. How Mycroft got his? 👀

DITM is my fav even though it doesn’t have Catra POV. She’s so different in that fic. She’s so in control, confident, open…HEALTHY, almost? For lack of a better word. She like really has her shit figured out in that fic. She just seems so kind and put together by comparison. What is it like to write a fic not with her POV?

its very interesting to write catradora at different stages of healing/growth. like asdlm catra is FUCKED UP, and many of mine are in a halfway place where we're dealing with like, season five catra, but ditm was one where i was looking towards Post Series catra and approaching her from a place where she's more healed because she 1) had adora as a lover with her for years before their breakup and was confident that adora did care deeply for her, just wasn't sure about true love being mutual, 2) their breakup did not happen because of deep insecurity (like in beg for me) or some big slight (though self-doubt was still a factor), 3) she had friends who were with her all the way (scorpia, lonnie) as well as new ones who provided a support structure for her when she fell apart, and 4) she had been away from Shadow Weaver for several years and managed to actively contradict a lot of the insecurities she instilled.

the success of her career was a major factor in her healing, because shadow weaver always told her she and her dreams were nothing. shadow weaver was dead wrong about that and she could be wrong about catra being unlovable too. catra had ire from the public to deal with like any famous person does but she was used to that with how she grew up and she also had thousands of fans that really helped with her self-doubt. she was making money, she was getting roles, and she was winning award (minor awards, until the oscars, but still awards). her life was coming together even when adora wasn't in it.

the final factor is the album heartstrings itself. Adora hardly needed to come apologize to catra because the album already told catra how she really felt. adora was willing to tell the entire world how much she loved catra, wanted her, and missed her. catra knew adora was going through everything she was too and had a couple months before they reconciled to process that. she also had things like counseling on navigating the public that helped her process and compartmentalize her feelings from a private perspective, which is a big factor in her composure, as well as her acting passion in general.

basically there are a lot of factors why catra is more healed in that fic and i did not mean to go off on them so much before answering your question lol XD

as far as writing from one perspective, it is something i do on occasion. not to bring it up again, but asdlm is one where i wrote from just catra's perspective, though due to it being longer and adora being literally unable to speak sometimes i did need a couple short interludes XD

every perspective holds its own challenges. if im changing pov by chapter, what happens when i need to switch perspective in the middle of an arcing narrative that should be self contained? do i break to a new chapter for a short scene with that POV and then jump back? that just feels unnecessary and disruptive, hence why this is probably my least-used perspective (i think just lotd, OESAB, and then a few short OotW fics). it's a freeing perspective to write in some ways (i can break a scene whenever i want and it doesn't matter) but comes with major drawbacks. if im constantly switching POV back and forth by scene, then sometimes there are two scenes that need to be from the same perspective and i have to figure out how to either make them one scene (see: the first scene of the final chapter of sw&d) or how to insert a scene that transitions between them without slowing down the narrative, feeling unnecessary, or just being annoying to write (see: nearly every fic that uses this pov style). if im alternating pov randomly... well, i rarely do this because it can get confusing. you have to be very careful establishing who is speaking every time you start a scene and keep the shifts from being jarring. however, this does give you the most narrative freedom, i just also think it takes the most skill to do cohesively. i've also never known of a published book to do this. not that i know a published book which alternates pov every scene, but i'm certain they're out there. alternating randomly i would assume to be rarer. i remember how well rick riordan utilized a form of this in one of his books where he switched pov based on chapter, always, until the one time he didnt and a new, third character perspective popped out of nowhere for a scene that really made the moment stand out (do i remember the moment? no it was like ten years ago, but ive been thinking about how strong that writing choice was ever since).

as for why i chose to do only adora's perspective for that one... honestly i'm hazy, but im pretty sure it was because all the scenes i came up with before writing were from adora's perspective. i do vaguely remember having that thought, because i had things like the reunion scene (adora dropping her coffee, introducing catra to her coworkers, and then taking catra somewhere private to the side to talk, all separate scenes) which were in adora's perspective when i imagined them and going to stay that way.

scenes happen one of two ways: im in the middle of writing, need the next scene, and so i just... write one, meaning i know what the previous pov was and thus what the new scene's pov should be, informing what i picture/write, OR the scene comes to me as im going about my day-to-day. in the case of the latter, it may be equally balanced in my head as im thinking it through and i only pick a pov for it later, or it has a distinct viewpoint im picturing it from. i may change this when i go to write it (because it works better from the other one, or because there's no reason for it to be that pov over the other and the "wrong" pov is up next in the fic), but in general those povs hold true, so having only adora povs in my head at the time made me just stick with it for the fic.

ditm was also only the second long fic i ever did. i was writing a lot of oneshots at the time, which i tend to do from only one pov (or, more rarely, alternate by chapter. alternating by chapter in ditm wouldn't have worked though because the reunion was split over two chapters). i was in one shot mode at the time, and unused to the long format, so writing from just one POV was more "normal"/natural at the time. I don't think i put a lot of thought into it honestly, though i did think about it some.

Purity culture has really done a number on us, even the creators that insist they don't care and will keep doing what they're doing--I even put off writing this fic for a long time because I was like hoo boy, I'm gonna get someone @ me when they realize I'm writing dark incest fic.

And it's not even like oh dark fic don't exist anymore, I just haven't seen a grouping of it the way the early Hobbit fandom like, regularly put out, in quite a while.)

13. I don't have a beta! In fact I don't think I have ever used one except maybe for some one shot back in the dark ages.

ok where do I even start with the last few chapters because they were absolutely beautiful. Driftmark was by far my favorite episode in the series and seeing it come to life was so fun. Daemon’s constant inner thoughts being so obsessed and crazed wirh seeing Aesira again (normally I wouldn’t freak out but this is hotd…) and Alicent’s little conversation with Aesira before she sees her father again ❤️ I love Alicent with all my heart and seeing her as this mother figuire to Aesira is so touching to me, that’s the daughter she always wanted.

Poor Damy! He did not deserve anything, he just wanted to defend his cousin/best friend and got hurt in the proccess, praying he wakes up. Also! Go my Queen ✨✨ Aesira standing up and taking the blame because she thinks that she has to do everything and puts everyone above her, she is literally the walking definition of eldest daughter syndrome. The whole chapter was so refreshing. And of course, Aegon and Aesira’s little walk was so sweet (well until we came across Daemon and Rhaenyra…) I feel like you capture Daemon really well. He is a character who is so slimy but also so interesting to watch and read about. DAEMON AND SIRA TALKING FOR THE FIRST TIME!? AESIRA TALKING SO BOLDLY YO RHAENYRA! MY LITERAL WIFE IS NOW AESIRA! (Villian arc whennn! Also I’m so excited for her to see Daemon again, when do you think that will happen? My guess is Ep8 in the Dinner scene. Which was again one of my fav episodes because everyone is toghter and I’m so excited to see the twins during that since along with Damy) my favorite chapter as of now.

I am aware of how distant Viserys and Aegon are and I loathe Viserys but seeing Viserys tell him everythung and be with him does warm my heart. With Aegon knowing the prophecy, the story is slowly changing and favoring the greens more because Aegon seems more prepare and with how much he is studying, he is slowly moving along with Kingly duties and will definitely be a better king. I am literally so excited to enter the Dance part. With s2 almost ending, I am quite disappointed with how it ended but I am really eager to see your twist on it and see Aesira become a major player and be more cunning and politically motivated.

ALSO A NEW ADRIAN STORY!? my inner child was so happy when I read the chapter. Celina already stole my heart and I already relate fo her as a person to such a deep level. i hope you don’t mind if I ask two questions 😭 I was thking how old Aesira, Aether and Aegon are currently and since they were 13 when the TargArryns came back and two years have passed, they are 15? I’m kinda confused because Aesira has recently jusr bled and girl’s usually bleed When they are like 12-13? Unless she is a late bloomer ofc. And my second question (feel free to ignore this one) but when I usually read or watch something and I like it, I usually search up the character’s personality to grasp a better sense of them. I would love to read a proper description of the TargArryn’s personalities.

yes!! aesira will meet daemon again when lucerys's position as heir is questioned by vaemond velaryon. the dinner scene will be another chapter i'm so excited to fully write, the outline is still all over the place.

ngl, s2 truly disappointed me and it pushes me to put aesira in this civil war more than ever. aegon hearing the prophecy from his father is the catalyst for him to be better, not just for his position in the realm but also for his family. the only downside in viserys telling the dream to aegon is him being not clear enough why the prophecy is so important--he only says that to make sure their legacy remains.

chat noir may have been one of my crushes when i was in middle school dhjfeh i have that idea for so long already, ever since s3-5 have been released bc what the hell did they do to my boy?!?! he deserves some healthy relationship fr and i want to give that to him at the start of the story. celine is also my baby; she will be inspired by so many experiences i've had while going through middle and high school. stay tuned for more chapters on that fic !!!

the older kids in family line are all 15 going 16. aesira is a late bloomer. and i admit i gave her that luxury bc it was stated in the previous chapters that she will be engaged to aegon the moment she bleeds.

oooooh the targ-arryns' personalities. hmm, let's see:

aesira targaryen -- she is a pragmatic person. having lost her mother, abandoned by her father, and made into a mother to a newborn baby--all at the age of 5, she adapted this mentality that she needs to grow up quickly despite having an older twin brother to shoulder an equal weight of responsibility. she is the type of person who really puts others over herself but recognizes a situation where she needs to puts herself first rather than others. she also knows when to protect herself, to hide her emotions from others. ig the nearest personality i can associate her with is the zodiac sign cancer. she has strong intuition and knows how to handle situations by thinking of various outcomes.

aether targaryen -- loves loves loves to rile people up. he is described as a younger version of daemon targaryen by some of the smallfolk who encountered him (something he wouldn't want tbh). buuuut he is selfless when it comes to his immediate family, his twin sister and baby brother. with years of growing up with aesira, he has always known that it will be his sister who holds the titles, being a future princess. so, he never expects to be given a similar heavy position (heir of the vale). despite parading himself as a confident individual, he is insecure, stemming from his trauma with his father. even tho he is twins with aesira, he is more of a leo tbh--passionate, loyal, and incredibly dramatic. he embraces the roles he is given like he is born to do it.

daemian targaryen -- the baby of the family. he is still young so his personality hasn't fully been grasped. for now, he is the sunshine of his brood of siblings. when he's with others, he's usually quiet, especially the time when rhaenyra's children is still training with them in king's landing. he prefers aemond's company when he's with others, seeing as his real best friend is in oldtown. he is also apprehensive more than anyone, one example is his view on aegon stealing his sister away from their side of the family. he treasures his attachment to his siblings more than anything. his role in the dance will be equal to that of daeron's.

Watching the extended version of the movies made me want to read the books, and now that I'm reading The Two Towers, I think I'm going to have to watch the movies again after I finish reading The Return of the King 😆.

Frodo has always been my fav in the movies, and I still really enjoy him in the books. I'm looking forward to seeing his relationship with Gollum/Smeagol in the books vs. the movies. I'm at the part where Merry and Pippin are meeting all the Ents, so the focus should switch back to Frodo and Sam in a few chapters.

I will say that this is one instance where it's actually fun to have watched the movies before reading the books, because now when I'm reading, I can imagine the scenes from the movies so well. Obviously there are differences in the books vs. movies, but I feel like they did a decent job condensing everything down (although they kicked Tom Bombadil to the curb... I think maybe they brought him in for the Rings of Power TV show though?). And it's fun to see which pieces of dialogue from the books they took for the movies. The movies certainly are missing a lot of songs/storytelling though 😆. I think Sam's song about the trolls (was it trolls...? I think so?) was my favorite. Or most memorable at least. Though I did like the song for Boromir as well.
