End of year wip round-up

Time to look through my files of notes and see what plots I have still waiting attention, and perhaps assess where they are in the scale of projects. Colour coded for riddlebird, hattercrow, wahsbands or octogoblin. I'm always open to questions on my projects. In fact, please do ask if you want to encourage them to be written.

Starting with some I have posted as unfinished works.

OTT (LEGO Batman) : I intend to post a second chapter for this, showing how well Riddler's plan turns out.

Gay Attorney (Gotham/Ace Attorney) : This is supposed to have multiple chapters with the various 'witnesses' taking the stand.

Little Bird (Batwoman) : Not sure where this is heading but a follow up chapter seems necessary.

P.I. Riddler (DC comics) : I have an outline of the idea for this but not sure how many chapters it will require to complete.

Urban Legends (Batman - all media) : There is going to be a continuation here with other rogues making an appearance.

What Is Reality? (Btas) : I already have a second chapter started and a concept of where its going, including a 'final' scene.

Good Omens : A friend suggested Alfred Molina as Aziraphale and Willem Dafoe as Crowley which is a fantastic idea.

Fate Or Something Like It : I really wanted to consider the timeline after Norman got back from No Way Home. How he might try to save Otto from his fate.

Old Friends, Bitter Enemies : I watched the Spider-man PS game and love the dynamic of Norman and Otto. It would be worth playing with.

Skyscraper : Basically a PWP. Be fun to write.

Misunderstandings : Oswald overhears Ed saying something he shouldn't.

Batman vs Dracula (2004 cartoon) : A re-write of the film except bringing Riddler into the story.

Halloween Topsy Turvy : A fancy dress party at the Lounge causes feelings to run high.

Streamer Ed (btas) : Ed works as a streamer, with Jon and Jervis as mods, and a habit of review Iceberg Lounge promotional videos.

Gotham Gossip (Gotham) : Newspaper column style fic charting their rising and falling relationship. I still like this concept but am struggling with the media.

LUNCH WITH JAN WONG To speak or not to speak, that is the question for Stratford's BrentCarver.

Brent Carver is shy, so shy that when you start asking questions, he stops eating lunch. Sometimes he stops talking altogether. "Some people think silence is golden," says Carver, 48, after one particularly excruciating pause.

On stage, the actor is a fountain of eloquence. He's worked in every major Canadian theatre. He won a Tony in 1993 for his work on Broadway. At Stratford this summer, he's starring in two productions, Fiddler on the Roof and Elizabeth Rex,a Timothy Findley play that premiered Thursday.

But take away his script and ask him about himself or, say, Garth Drabinsky. Then there are only half-sentences, long stares and silence, lots of silence.

Carver is a vegetarian. He normally has a bowl of oatmeal or Red River cereal for breakfast. But at this brunch at Stratford's elegant Church Restaurant, he fortifies himself with salmon cakes and apple slaw to make it through the day's rehearsal -- and this interview.

In Elizabeth Rex, about a meeting between Shakespeare and Elizabeth I, he plays an actor specializing in female roles. Carver often takes on gender-bending parts. He won the Tony for his portrayal of Molina, the flamboyant gay window dresser in Kiss of the Spider Woman. Time magazine said that his performance "far surpasses" William Hurt's 1985 Oscar-winning version.

But ask Carver about the influence his own life has had on these roles, and an awkward silence ensues. For someone whose day (and night) job is performing before a live paying audience, he's paralyzed one on one. In 40 articles about him, including two promisingly headlined "A Personal Profile" and "A Frank Conversation," there's scant information. Not one mentions whether he's married, single, divorced or living with anyone. Only one says he has a cat named Licorice.

At lunch, Carver admits to having a cat named Licorice. He also acknowledges having a tiny home in nearby Niagara-on-the-Lake. He won't say more. As for his temporary digs in Stratford, he says, "I'm living alone here." He imbues "here" with all the significance a great actor can muster. Does that mean he doesn't live alone over there in Niagara-on-the-Lake?

"I won't talk about my personal life, particularly when we witness across America the intrusion . . . ." His voice trails off. He looks down. "I have nothing to sell. What I do is I'm an actor. My home is found in the theatre."

Jeez. You'd think I was asking if he was gay. Actually, I am. And he is. But he's uncomfortable talking about it, even in this age of record-setting gay pride parades. You feel as though you're dragging him out of the closet. Yet he's not in the closet. Carver has talked, sort of, about his homosexuality in Xtra! He told the gay bi-weekly he feels "a part of the gay community." But even Xtra! elicited nothing more than the fact that in 1995 he was single and sharing his house with an ex-lover.

"I have no children," he says at lunch, daring you to read more into it. Then he looks down again at his lap. He pushes away his plate. He sips some Red Rose tea.

"Not many people ask me who I actually am," he says slowly. "As Shakespeare says in Hamlet, 'What ultimately is plucking out the heart of one's life?' Do we actually think that's going to illuminate who we are? Say what is our existence on earth?"

He played Hamlet 16 years ago. The exact quote is: You would pluck out the heart of my mystery; You would sound me from my lowest note to the top of my compass: And there is much music, excellent voice, in this little organ; yet cannot you make it speak.

Shakespeare was right. In Carver, there is much music, excellent voice. Yet you cannot make him speak. In the long edgy silence that follows, the actor stares at the oak table. He carefully delineates segments of it with the edges of his hands. He does not look up.

His fingers are long and white, like the rest of his body. At 5 foot 11 and 158 pounds, he looks like a graduate student in his tan plaid shirt, red backpack and 32-inch waist jeans. His lean look suits both his current roles. In Fiddler, he plays Tevye, a gaunt Russian peasant in the midst of a czarist pogrom. In Elizabeth Rex, he's a Shakespearean actor dying of the pox.

Carver was born in Cranbrook, B.C., the fourth of eight children. His mother was a clerk at Woolworth's. His father, who loved music, drove a logging truck. Carver loved music, too. "My uncle remembers me singing things from the radio before I could talk," he says.

At seven, he earned money singing at weddings. He also sang for the Lions Club and the school choir. The choir stuff, and his blond ringlets, made him a prime target. Neighbourhood bullies beat him in Grade 1. They threw snowballs in his eyes. "I used to make sure my older brother would walk me home from school," Carver recalls.

As Tevye, the beleaguered father of five headstrong daughters, he spends virtually the entire two hours and 45 minutes on stage. He also sings and dances to 14 songs. After one matinee, Carver leaned in exhaustion against the backstage wall, before emerging to acknowledge a standing ovation.

With Elizabeth Rex up and running too, he'll have up to seven shows a week. On 13 gruelling days, he'll perform both Fiddler and Elizabeth Rex. On those days, he says, he'll steal a nap between removing his matinee makeup and applying new makeup for the evening. "It's essential to lie down, put on music -- Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Mozart."

Since he won't talk about himself, perhaps he'll talk about why he won't talk. Asked if questions make him nervous, Carver segments out more sections of the oak table with his long fingers. He says he's always talked in fits and starts. "I start talking." He pauses. "That's not quite what I think, so I edit."

After high school, where he was valedictorian, he enrolled in theatre studies at the University of British Columbia. Three years later, he dropped out to act in movies, television and the theatre. In 1984, after working in four movies in a row, he abruptly withdrew from acting for eight months. "I just needed to not work," he says.

His most famous withdrawal came after winning the Tony. He was the toast of Broadway. Barbra Streisand came backstage to visit. But he quit three months later. His contract for Kiss of the Spider Woman gave him an escape clause, and he grabbed it. "Some people can go for three or four years. I'm just not made that way."

Livent asked him to reconsider. He did, and still said no. As for Drabinsky, Carver hasn't seen or spoken to him since Livent went kaput. He says he isn't owed any money and had a "terrific working relationship" with Drabinsky. He won't say more.

Most actors would have tried to parlay the Tony into a career in Hollywood. Instead, Carver went to Edmonton, where he played Cyrano de Bergerac at the Citadel Theatre. "I didn't leave Broadway specifically to go to Edmonton," he says defensively.

His withdrawal is more understandable if you know that one of his best friends died a year and a half earlier -- in a fire at Carver's Stratford house. (He was out of town at the time.) Susan Wright, the Canadian actress, died on Dec. 29, 1991, along with her parents. It was Wright who had urged him to take on the role in Kiss of the Spider Woman. When he won the Tony, he dedicated it to her.

At lunch, the salmon cakes are still uneaten, but Carver has to rush off to a rehearsal. He looks relieved. Soon he'll be able to speak lines somebody else wrote. He gets up, shakes hands and slings his backpack over his shoulder. He says he's really enjoyed lunch. Carver is a great actor, but not that great.

-Obsessed with the way Neteyam is about his morning routine and solitude, it jives so well with my opinion of him. He’s got to have things his way, and under his control. Taken care of well. He’s going to have a field day with Spider. I see we are already leaning heavily into Neteyam’s "I can fix him" complex. Even when he wants to help Jake, which I know is something wheelchair users don’t often want if it’s something they do all the time themselves. It’s the innate feeling of standing by and doing nothing while watching someone struggle, when it’s their day to day life. And if that isn’t Neteyam’s whole thing? I’m obsessed with how he just cannot handle anyone else’s bad vibes without trying to fix it right away. Speaking of;

-If there is not a moment where Jake allows Neteyam to help him when he needs it, I will throw myself off a bridge, Andrei. ~growth~ the opportunity is there and it’s ripe.

-I am literally obsessed with My Father Jake Sully who was neglected and hurt as a child being the most desperate man alive to connect with and heal kids in the same situation he was in. It fits so so well in his character for me. I feel like he spends most of his life trying to heal old wounds and make up for the past, in a way.

Not worthy of the phone, of food, of attention or love? Truly my fav paragraph of the chapter. You are a master at establishing a character in a few subtle lines. It's a tactic that I only get after a few rewrites; instead of saying "Neteyam wants to fix everyone" you show us him in a situations where he wants to and can't help. Instead of telling me Spider doesn't care for his own safety, you tell me he's confused by his therapist saying his coping is dangerous. Instead of saying emotion, tell me something that would make me feel that emotion. Writing 101, and yet so hard to pull off properly.

-I laughed out loud at Neteyam trying not to look at Spider’s muscles I am dying. Neteyam should ask him out loud.

-EVEN TUK HAS IT ON LOCK, SHE SAYS NETEYAM HAS A THING FOR PEOPLE WHO SOUND A LITTLE SAD. This is so not funny but so funny because it’s all specifically for me.

-Neteyam later in life is like that dumbass gum commercial where the guy reveals he’s been keeping the gum wrappers every time the girl gives him one and drawing on them when and where she gave it to him? That’s Neteyam when the piles and piles of smiley face receipts fall out of his trench coat pockets.

-“I didn’t realize that was you” filthy liar. Spider’s smiley face drawing rizz is crazy. You bet your ass he wasn't doing that to every fuckers receipts.

I couldn't hear my crush at a party last year and I just laughed and said yeah and she was like "no I asked what you think" and not a single day goes by it doesn't play behind my eyelids like the DVD in The Ring. So, unless Spider has asked every single man at McDonalds out, he remembers when he asked a guy out and the guy sped off like he had a warrant out from Dominic Toretto.

-Oh my god, it was Spider. And this man sURVIVED that encounter? This man who can’t survive a strong breeze rn? What was he going to do with number, call him from phone booths? Send smoke signals to the write telephone wire? I am cackling at the idea that he had rehearsed this so many times and yet never actually thought through not having a phone.

-The smiley face on the paper. That revived Spider from his death post awkward encounter. There will be smiley faces on the invitations to their wedding and only Tuk will understand.

How would you rank your vids based on how much you like them?

Ah yes!! I can answer this one

The Many Adaptations of Berserk: I feel like it has to be this one as my fav. There’s parts of the video I wish I could redo (mainly the audio), but to put out such labor of love and have it receive such a positive response back, it’s so fulfilling. From people telling me it got them into Berserk to survivors messaging me to tell me how much the video meant to them. It’s a sense of pride and accomplishment that I never thought I’d ever feel with my art.

Spider-Man Musical: This, for me, feels like the prime example of what I want my channel to be: exploring relatively obscure things in a way that shows how strange they are while also taking it seriously and really examining them. As someone who has been fascinated with this musical for over a decade, finally finding a way to make an essay about it and letting people know about things like the spider fucking and the shoe song.

Dollar Store Game Show: I wish I could redo the audio here. God I wish I could redo the audio here. That being said, I’ve always seen this as the hidden gem of my channel, and whenever I talk to other creators, chances are this is the video of mine they bring up. The Facebook conspiracy “In Motion” part might be my favorite editing gag I’ve ever done

Demo Reel: I would’ve ranked this much lower if I hadn’t rewatched it a few weeks ago for the new Demo Reel vid. Despite some first time video mistakes that I would happily fix if I could, I think the script here is really solid and could have been way worse. I get why people like this one so much. I probably would’ve been really into this video if I wasn’t the one who made it. I still can’t believe I actually got away with the Evangelion intro gag.

Kitchen Nightmares: I started outlining this video back in my college days. I rewatched it about a month ago and my main note is that it feels like a video anyone could’ve made on Kitchen Nightmares, for better or for worse, and lacks a lot of the… personal energy I like to include in these things? But I still think it’s pretty solid. I also meant to include an entire segment on Nathan For You and just… forgot to lmao oops

The Return of Demo Reel: This one is still so new that I haven’t fully processed my feelings on it. This is probably the meanest video I’ve done so far lol I wasn’t sure how much the two halves would connect together, especially since it’s the only video I’ve done so far that isn’t broken up into segments but is rather scripted as one long thing. The Cinemassacre Backlash: It feels weird to rank this one so low. I still am proud of the result, but I also think it has the same issue as Kitchen Nightmares where it’s like oh, anyone could’ve made that. I did like getting to interject my perspective into the discourse as someone who co-writes and makes online content and I have gotten a lot of praise for this one by my peers which has been nice. Having it blow up so much was wild and has definitely been a career benefit, even if I’m unsure if I’ll ever do a video like this again

Harley and Ivy: I don’t know why but I can’t help but feel like I could’ve made this one better. I’m not sure how, but it just feels like it exists to me. I actually didn’t even remember that I did the whole thing with the Be Gay, Do Crime scale until I saw it referenced on my TV Tropes page

Lost Film About Internet Memes: This one is fine but it sits in a lower place in my head for a lot of reasons. First being that a lot of personal life stuff surrounding the release and aftermath of the video. Second being my hatred of the original thumbnail and the belief that it tanked that video in a way it’s only now recovering from, which affected future business dealings and negotiations and algorithm stuff. Then the fact that this is the only time I’ve regretted going soft in one of my videos. I originally put more stuff in the script about how I believed the guy who made it was a grifter who seems to do a lot of scams but I changed it to make it more subtext and less of a personal attack and then in the aftermath of the vid it turns out, oops, this guy had a history of screwing people over and grifting and jumped into cryptocurrency because of course he did. I don’t think I’d ever revisit this subject, but if I had a time machine, I would’ve had way more testimonials in the vid from former PopMalt people.

Existential Horror Of Making Content About Content: The nicest thing I can say about this one is that it was the first time I ever made a thumbnail myself and I’m actually pleased with how it turned out, all things considered. Otherwise I can’t see myself ever watching this again

I hope it doesn’t sound like I’m too harsh on my own work lol I just have a unique relationship to it, I think. I’m generally proud of my videos, even if I do have issues with them as their creator.

No but literally c!beeduo being an ambiguous realtionship is so important to me. It's started as platonic, and now it's tentatively cannon that it's romantic, and they have a son and they are husband's and they love each other and they just have such a wonderful relationship. If it's important to someone that's it's platonic, it can be interpreted as that and it fits and they still love eachother and it's awesome. If it's important to someone else that's it's romantic it can also be interpreted as that and they love eachother so much and it's so cool.

I personally lean ambiguous +romantic because I think of them as more kiss averse aces, which I am, because I can interpret tham as that because it fits and I feel like there are characters in media that are like me which is so cool.

It's just so special to me to think of them as this inbetween because their love is this beautiful, wonderful thing that's just a little bit more than friends but they don't really need or want to define it as romantic, and however you look at it, they love eachother so, so much.

c!beeduo are husband's who love eachother to the ends of the earth, in their own beautiful, special, wonderful, fluid way, and they defy expectations by not quite defining it, and giving the room for people to interpret it and feel connected to it whatever way they wish.

Finally my other Staged DVD is in town which means after it gets here I can look in to cutting down which DVDs I have here, I highly doubt I'll need Wiggles right now especially because I still have a strong desire to punch Anthony in the face, and I have other things I want to watch first.

Otherwise aside from my records, many of which I want to frame and display as decor, I'm done until closer to move out time, and putting the dollhouse towards the very front so it doesn't accidentally become a shelf for someone's bowling ball collection, know what I mean.

Had to break out of a thought spiral about how anything I have Star Trek would disappear if it could, the smothering unit hates everything "Star Trek" and I have to remind her that I feel the same way about game shows and that I don't even talk about Star Trek around her... But another part of the thought spiral was how my art books and supplies would immediately become fodder for her to bribe her way in to friendship with the kids across they way because they "do art" and all my dolls would go to the one around back because she "likes dolls".

I know it's all part of the stress of the move but I'm also starting to note more and more mildly ___ behaviors that the Life Ruiner modeled then amplified to past eleven.

"I don't know how that fell" but I do, because it's mine. Last house I never left anything in the common area I wasn't watching like a hawk because it would get damaged somehow.

Deep breath. The Life Ruiner isn't here. She can't come to this place. She won't be able to go to the next place. I never ever have to see her again. If she ever gets herself together mentally I am under no obligation to accept her apology. I don't have to forgive her, it will do nothing for me.

Down to the last like half hour-20 minutes of Picard s2. Just after the one ship took off and before the other ship does. I definitely think a Picard break will be in order. I'll put the DVDs in the keep a little longer pile, or the travel disc carrier if I get down to that. That way they'll be on hand if I do want to watch.

I might go gay pirates next as I could use some humor.

Did have a break thru of sorts in the CYOA Spider-Man story I've been trying to tell for 20+ years. Going to use the colored pens in the reusable notebook to work on it. The cover on the one in my purse is for shit but the paper is holding up and I've used it quite a few times.

If you need to write out anything then feel the need to scour it from the face of the earth a reusable notebook will allow you to literally wash your written sins away.

I know you're into Spideypool (yay, same!) but the Cable & Deadpool run is worth checking out as well. Lots of shipping there as well (Cablepool is my second fav ship after Spideypool) and you get a lot of Wade and his issues and the start of him really trying to be good. and I think it's got the first spiderman and deadpool meeting (I'll have to doublecheck on that; at the very least there's an issue with an early meeting for them)

Spider-Man/Deadpool was easy to read because it was a specific team up comic series that I could follow pretty easily (even if the end got waaay too weird for me to really enjoy) but going back and trying to follow the main Deadpool or main Spider-Man comics is just too much of an ask.

That being said, I am open to getting advice on what to read to get the best bits of the comics? Otherwise just send me examples from the comics where Deadpool is acting particularly gay and adorable!

As a side note, I'm not holding out any hope because its gonna be with Disney, but I would love for Deadpool 3 to explore his sexuality more. Now that Cable is a main character in the films, I really think there isn't an excuse for them to actually go the explicit pansexual route. Because I don't personally think the 2nd movie did enough to explore that part - well, not enough to make the homophobes, fuckbois and neck beards throw tantrums anyway (and it's always great when they are annoyed).

I would def like to read Spider-Man and Deadpool's first meeting though if you know what issue that is. I know Spider-Man basically hates him at first but we all know that changes drastically ;-)

If anyone knows all the issues outside of the Spideypool comics that have Spider-Man and Deadpool interacting please let me know! I also want to know if they have interacted at all SINCE the Spideypool comics finished their run? Basically give me alll the Spideypool content in the comics pleeeaaasse!

If you have specific recommendations for content between Deadpool and Cable I am open to exploring that ship as well! Could be fun! :P

The Bright Side of 2020

It's easy to say that 2020 was an awful year. Because it was. 2020 is easily one of the worst years in a while, filled with death, depression, economic collapse, a pandemic, and even the word 'poggers' becoming a thing. 

Seriously, what the hell is 'poggers?!' The more I see it, the less it makes sense to me!

2020 was filled to the brim with so many awful moments. In no way should we forget any of it, and heaven forbid that we ignore all of it.

But that doesn't mean we should let the bad overshadow the good.

As we enter the last month of the dumpster fire that is this year, let us look over the good that came from it. Because I don't want to end 2020 with a whimper, but at least with a little glimmer of hope.

So here is my list:

Joe Biden has been elected as our new president, and the entire world had collectively celebrated. Sure, Trump is reacting to the news like a toddler who won't share his ball and decided to run home crying to his mommy. But by January, we will never talk about this man again, and America will remember him as he was back in 2016: A bad joke that wasn’t that funny to begin with, and has been annoying to hear since the beginning.

Our new vice president will not only be the first female VP but will also be a VP who is an African American, an Asian American, and an Indian American. It doesn't make up for the years when old white dudes were in charge, but it's a start. So let's take a moment to appreciate our new VP, shall we...That was nice. Next!

Voice actors who are people of color are given more of a chance to voice characters who are POC as well. It gets better as white VAs are getting replaced with VAs with the correct background to perform as specific characters. You can make the argument that a voice is a voice and that it doesn't matter who the face behind it is as long as the performance is still good. But if you're going to go the progressive route anyway, then why not go all the way with hiring actors to portray their own race/culture?

Several comedians kept us laughing despite how the year got worse and worse and how emotionally drained they were because of it. Laughter is the best medicine and boy, does it help that I can still laugh off the pain this year brought.

On a darker note: Online personalities Ryan Haywood from Achievement Hunter and Adam Kovic from Funhaus were revealed to dealing in sexual misconducts with their fans. On the surface, this seems like a bad thing. And with the betrayal and heartbreak that came from it, it certainly seems like so. But look at it this way: These monsters would have continued to do such awful things, regardless if they got caught this year or not. And while it pains me to know so many good videos are going to be deleted, some of which helped me on days that I needed a laugh the most, it is good knowing that Haywood and Kovic won't get away with what they did again. Because we won’t let them.

Back to a lighter note: A rare yellow turtle was discovered in India, and I am in love with this thing! I thought it was a mustard stain at first when I saw the photo, but it's a turtle. And it's adorable. And I will not rest until I find it and give it cuddles it deserves. Which is all of the cuddles.

So many incredible LGBTQ+ representations were given this year! Yes, that whole thing with Dean and Castiel was unforgettable as much as it is unforgivable. But if you ignore the live-action side of things and look at animation, you will find things are brighter than a rainbow over a pride parade. Catra and Adora finally kissed in a moment that was both satisfying and beautiful. Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn became a couple in Harley Quinn, giving comic fans something they wanted for years. Adventure Time fans were given a forty-five-minute episode filled with adorable moment after adorable moment of Marceline and Princess Bubblegum being an operant couple. Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts has a character who explicitly says, "I'm gay," and even gets a boyfriend in the end (I think. I haven't finished the show yet). And Disney has finally, F**KING FINALLY, taken steps in the right direction with their new hit: The Owl House. A series where the main character is a bisexual Latina who has a same-sex love interest that has an explicit crush on the main character.

And while we're on the topic of entertainment: HOLY S**T, have you seen the quality content we got this year?

Amazing animated shows came out with hit after hit with series like The Midnight Gospel, The Owl House, Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, Central Park, and many, many more. Shows that are hilarious, beautifully animated, and tell compelling stories with equally compelling characters.

Adventure Time, Animaniacs, Eddsworld, Phineas and Ferb, and Crash Bandicoot came back with revivals, reboots, specials, and long-awaited sequels that were not just as good as they were before leaving, but in some ways, are even better.

A recorded performance of Hamilton can now be seen on Disney+, meaning that theater kids can finally see the show they have been obsessing over since that soundtrack came out.

HBOmax took shows from DC's piece of s**t streaming service, meaning that fans can watch Doom Patrol and Harley Quinn on a service that's actually worth the price...Titans can suck a dick. But Doom Patrol and Harley Quinn! Doom Patrol and Harley Quinn!

Avatar: The Last Airbender and Community is on Netflix now...so go watch them.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a game that stars the famous bi-racial Spider-Man, that also shows off the color and diversity that is present in the people of Harlem. And given what happened this year, that is definitely appreciated. Not to mention that I’ve heard it's a fun game on top of that!

And that's just the s**t I can think of off the top of my head. There are plenty more good things that came this year, some of which I'm sure is better than what I put on this list. All a person has to do is do some research, which I encourage you to do yourself.

Don't let 2020 win by beating you down. Instead, let's focus on the bright side to stop the dark shadow of a year from taking over.

And I'm begging you: Keep this list going! It's not a bad thing to give people good news for a change.
