my gap year in photos

hi there! long time no see. it’s been well over a year since i graduated from uni, almost two years that i’ve been with my job since i was a wee intern, and this time a year ago, i told myself i would have applied to law school.

here i am a year later to report i didn’t manage to apply to law school.

the last year and a half has been a series of huge up and downs with the LSAT and writing a personal and diversity statement, on top of working full-time from home, being an involved family member, volunteering, and completing a two-year fellowship.

i did poorly on the LSAT, got pretty sick (a few times), and burnt myself to the point where i had to pause on this lifetime goal and focus on what is most important: myself (and my health).

if i could do this again, i wish that i took a WHOLE year to do nothing (just working) and one year to study for the LSAT.

and that’s exactly what i plan to do. take rest from law school applications, get healthy, re-make my game plan, and come back next fall better than ever to be the best and strongest applicant i can be.

which is why i’ll be back on studyblr regularly to post my progress, hold myself accountable, and get some motivation to get to the finish line. this community was the reason i got through senior year in high school, again in uni, and when i was job hunting.

i feel like being on here again willl be so worthwhile as i see myself in this next year of growth and development. consider this my (re)debut back to the commmunity!

08.18.21 - drew a little vision board a few weeks ago and honestly, i'm happy to say that 80% of the time, my current life is living up to it!

07.18.21. i've realized that i'm most productive in the morning, but i have to be at work at 9am sharp. solution: waking up early, dragging my limp, uncaffeinated body to the library, and trying to work on postbacc apps for an hour before work. being an adult... wouldn't recommend.

SOME FAVORITE STUDY/FOCUS RESOURCES

online pomodoro timer - perfect for days where you have several assignments to complete, this timer automatically tracks how many 25 minute sessions you complete, bringing up the five minute break timer between the first three, then the fifteen minute break timer following the fourth.

freedom for computer - this website blocks all but a list of websites you choose for as long as you need it to. i’ve found it’s great to keep me on task when drafting a longer essay i’ve already done all my research for.

forest for cellphone - i’ve linked to the one on the chrome store, but the best iteration of this app is definitely the one to keep you off your phone. something about having a small, fake tree’s life in your hands is very motivating and also frightening. plus, it’s satisfying to look back at your tiny forest after a long week.

quizlet - if you’re a student in 2021 and haven’t used quizlet what legitimately what you doing. while there isn’t the benefit of handwriting out flashcards and it’s a lot less aesthetic, it’s way more convenient for those of us with messy handwriting or who need to study on buses and the like. you don’t have to worry about dropping cards on the gross bus floor

notion - notion is already madly popular on studyblr, with many people making wildly aesthetic setups, but it doesn’t have to be all that complicated! in my opinion, lists are a very satisfying way to ensure you get everything you want to done, and notion is very nice for that. plus yeah the aesthetic arty fancy options are a bonus. 

friends and family - okay this one is definitely a cop out because it’s not actually a concrete study resource, but i’ve found it works really well to make sure my friends and family are holding me accountable. for friends, this means warning them ahead of time if there’s going to be a few days where they probably shouldn’t try to make plans with me or expect me to be on discord, and for family or roommates this means reminding them to be non-disruptive. don’t be rude to your friends and family though because being a kind person to those you love should definitely should come before academic success.

I studied for my first math mock test which was pretty much disastrous. I blanked out halfway and everything went downhill afterwards :(

Studied Semiconductors in Physics. I totally lost my pace after I saw Walker Scobell being cast as Percy and ended up watching the Adam project instead.

February / week of 11-17

• Didn't really fill it all up because I was very tired and fatigued the whole week. I was also stressing out towards the end of the week because I need to pack for a 4-day work trip.

• One of my stressors was the fact that my commonplace journal has been out of stock for the last two months lmao and I was afraid that it might be phased out already so I messaged the company last week and they said that it's just really out of stock. I don't know but that still stressed me out so I stopped myself from commonplacing for like the longest time and did my research instead in the hopes to find a new book to work with. Unfortunately that made me a lot more stressed because I can't find any good replacement - my current one is just perfect for all my needs. Then this morning, I awoke to a notification from the company's official shop saying that it has restocked! So I ordered two and am actually pondering if I should order one more or is that too overkill 😅

just finished this! i'm very glad i randomly decided to pick it up, i ended up enjoying it a lot. i haven't read all that much by hesse, but everything so far has been special. i don't know how to explain it well - i always feel a certain tenderness towards life in his writings, and lots of compassion. i really should read more of his.
